It pains me to have to downgrade Sampan, but for the last several months this place is just going downhill. Did they change chefs or something? The food is no longer phenomenal, it's just adequate. I went with my mom, grandma and son the other day. My mom ordered the Pad Thai and it was pretty nasty. Grandma ordered the pan fried noodles and they were very dry and there wasn't very much food for the price. I had my regular lo mein and it made me cry. Something has changed, because I used to be in love with the lo mein, and whatever those noodles were on my plate, they were IMPOSTERS. Oh my precious lo mein, I will miss you forever. Their orange chicken is gross. Just stay away. I still like their fried rice, but that's about the only nice thing I can say regarding Sampan anymore. I'll be visiting Szechuan Garden and Asian Potato (it's so fun to say!) for my Chinese cuisine devouring needs from now on.

There was 5 of us and we all ordered a dinner. The orange chicken was dismal at best. The curry chicken was NOT curry, I'm actually not sure what was in it but that goes for the rest of the plates we had there. Our dinner party actually joked about the restaurant having complimentary barf bags under the table as a courtesy because the food was horrible. However the staff was nice.

ROACH FOUND IN OUR RICE! came here for the first time craving Chinese food. After we ate our soup and paper wrap chicken our entree came we had taken about 4 bites the rice comes and my boyfriend finds a roach in his serving! Grossed us out so bad! When reported the incident they told us they wood take 10% off. We were so upset with how unprofessional they handled it.

Let me start by saying the Sugarhouse location is better than this one! Never had any glaring issues there. This location however... Nothing but issues. This was my second time ordering from them and by far my worst experience. They took almost an hour and a half to deliver when they told me 40 minutes... When I called them after 55 minutes I was told they were still cooking my order. When my order arrived it was missing my cream cheese wontons... The only reason I ordered was for the wontons. I would have called and complained but I figured out last time they don't really care.

We've been loyal customers of this location for 12 years. And while it's seen better years, it still is quite good. The food is the best takeout in the South Jordan/Sandy area. The hot and sour soup is delicious and authentic. The Singapore rice noodles, green beans with brown sauce and chicken are also great and pretty authentic. The general Taos is good divey Chinese. Paper wrapped chicken, egg rolls, and cream cheese wontons also make yummy snacks. The one issue is the price- a combo that was once $7.95 is now $12.95!! For the exact same thing- yikes! The meals definitely aren't $13 quality. Other than that, give this place a whirl.

I was a little sad to see that this place didn't have more positive views, I always come here when I'm craving AMERICANIZED Chinese food (rarely) since it's close to my house and I've always enjoy it. This place is not your ordinary Chinese restaurant that you might find downtown, and I like that. It's always a very nice and clean environment to eat at. I typically order the same thing when I go though. For years, I've always gotten the PON PON CHICKEN. I like that they have the combination options. Which is a few dollars to add a small appetizer, soup and rice to your entree. Cream cheese wontons and egg drop soup never disappoint. This place by far is the best for Thai Tea. They give you a generous amount--no refills, but it's not needed, whereas other places give you a much smaller sized cup for the same price. Whenever I come, the same waitress is always there and she's always friendly. The only downfall to the place that I've experienced is the fried rice. It's very bland and dry, leaving it better off to order just the steamed white rice. Also, it's a little more pricey for what you actually get but I don't mind! Other than that, I haven't had any problems with this place!

From top to bottom, another fallen star awarded to a Chinese restaurant. Sampan officially stopped serving their authentic portion of the menu including dim sum. To make thing s worse, their Americanized part of the menu is not doing so great either. Quality is slipping, and food is no longer season correctly. The last bowl of noodles I had from them tasted terrible. I suppose they are transformed into another typical overly sweeten mediocre Chinese restaurant. Is Sandy doomed to have bad Chinese food?

We HAD eaten here, but not again. The food was old, slimy, and bad tasting. the ONLY good thing..... The Potstickers, but not enough to eat there again. We ordered online 1 time and they couldn't find my house!! After 1:30 minutes I called them and asked, "WHERE IS MY FOOD????!?!?!?" They said, " You didn't put the right address in and my Driver is lost!" NOT going back.

A few years ago, both locations were great. But the past few times I have eaten there or had it delivered I have been disappointed. Last night was the last time I will be eating there for awhile at least. It took an hour and a half for delivery this time, and two hours the last time. My kung po chicken should have been kung po shrimp, and the hot and sour soup of theirs that I normally love, tasted strange. If you do order, go for lunch. Cheap, and I would say like another reviewer, that it is sadly now a step above panda express. But the chicken has been better than what they use at panda.

It's rare for me to not like a place. It can't be helped. This place failed me as a customer on many levels. The food was boring and subpar. The service is what really got me. I showed up with a party of ten and for at least half an hour, we were one of two tables there (just after lunch hours). The entire time I was there, I had one drink. The waitress never came to our table after giving us our drinks and taking our order. I even tried to wave her down but nobody seemed to be paying attention. I could have really used the refill to add flavor to my lunch. Even as I left the restaurant the cashier was distant and made no eye contact. I will not give this place a second chance. After sharing my experience with friends and family, they shared similar experiences. What a waste of a great location. I bet if school cafeterias were to serve Chinese food, it would taste like it does here.

Pro's - delivery, relatively fast service, convenient location, polite staff, decent prices, and they clean their shrimp! Con's - bland tasteless flavor, terrible beef lo-mein.

I find that this place is more for lunch or take out. A notch above panda express.

For Utah, this restaurant is not bad for Chinese, but you can get better. We go here for dim sum quite often when we are not in the mood for driving all the way to West Valley (Five Star Cuisine) or downtown SLC (Hong Kong Tea House). The dim sum is ordered off a menu (no Hong Kong style carts here) and is for the most part OK. A word of caution, however. It doesn't seem like they have a high turnover for dim sum, so sometimes it is not as fresh as it should be (especially the Ha Gau). The Shu Mai is particularly good, but I have always found the Steamed Spareribs with Black Beans to be rather bland and underseasoned. For regular cuisine, the menu has a definite Americanized slant to it...it is definitely better than any "Chinese Buffet", but we prefer Joy Luck (about 1 mile down on State St) for more authentic Chinese food. The decor is nice enough (actually rather trendy), but the service is almost always abrupt and dismissive. Overall, Sampan is OK if you are in the area, but definitely don't make a special trip for it.

Food was bland. Over or undercooked, depending on the food. The meat was tough and stringy. Just about as bad as you can get. We went to this restaurant based on a review from City Weekly and were sorely disappointed.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
