La Frontera is what it is. I like coming here. The smothered burrito is good. I don't get it with Cheese but that's just me. It's not the best Mexican food I have ever had, but it's also not the worst. When I'm craving a smothered burrito this is for sure the place I come to. The food here is pretty much the same as La Puente so if you are looking for a smothered burrito really either places are good. The only thing I eat here is the smothered burrito because it's the only thing I think tastes good... To this location specifically, I think they could really update their booths I really hate them. I just don't feel that it's super clean at this location. It's the closest to work however or I would probably go to a different location because parking here SUCKS as well! In all.. not great... not bad... just some decent Mexican food.

Coming from Southern California, I'm used to having at least a dozen Mexican restaurants I can drive to just minutes away whenever I found the craving. Thus, it was definitely difficult moving to Utah! I was studying at the Starbucks right next to La Frontera Cafe and wanted some Mexican food! I began yelping up a location, and found that La Frontera was in the same corner. I was hesitant because of the many 1 star reviews, but decided that the convenience outweighed the risks. I'm glad I did try it because it was actually delicious! I enjoyed the chips & salsa as well as the chile relleno and smothered burrito! Portions are big and prices are great, especially for Utah! I know I'll be coming back again whenever I have a craving. On another note...every time I've walked into La Frontera has always come with a hint of confusion. Here's how it typically goes: I'll walk to the cashier (I assume is also the hostess) and she'll look at me wondering what I wanted. Once she told me I can sit wherever I'd like and a server will come, and another time, a gentleman seated me. I'm still not sure how it's supposed to go, but I assume seating depends on how busy they are. +1 Star: Affordable prices! +1 Star: Delicious food! I'd recommend their chile relleno and smothered burrito! I also enjoy their chips and salsa--it's very spicy! +1 Star: Plenty of space to sit and it's not crowded! I've always been able to sit down quickly. +1 Star: Nice decorations! -1 Star: Service can be improved.

I am surprised to see the average review rating at 2.0 as I write this review. If you are looking for tex-mex, melted cheesy gooey heaven on a plate - this is the place to go. There are several La Frontera locations in the valley and they are pretty identical to La Puente. This location specifically usually has low wait times for seating and food delivery. The service is good and the food is consistently good as well. The only downside is that this location shares a parking lot with Starbucks and several other stores in a strip mall and parking is obnoxious.

My wife and I wanted to experiment going out to eat with our brand new, 6 day-old son. We've been to La Frontera many times before, but not in a long while. My experience in the past had always been pleasant and timely. We dined close to home at the Sandy location at 61 West 10600 South. I've always enjoyed the over-the-top stereotypical Mexican decor of this place. Even though this is a strip mall unit, they've managed to find the room to fit a spacious dining hall dressed up like a wild west corral and saloon. They have recently cheapened the look, however, with poorly displayed laminated printouts of the latest so-called specials. Neither my wife nor I could hear our server. The music wasn't loud, our baby was silent throughout the meal (yay!), and the server's accent wasn't even that terribly thick. He simply spoke so quietly that, standing right next to me, we could not understand a word he said. We found ourselves directing the conversation from context and visual cues alone. The server was prompt and otherwise helpful, but we couldn't help the feeling that the restaurant had begun "nickel and diming" us. I don't recall them ever charging for chips beyond the first "complimentary" bowl or the horchata not having free refills or costing a whopping $2.75 a glass. As my wife is pointing out in the photo, the sour cream was served in a plastic tube which proved difficult to open as it had no "open here" slit. This made us laugh. The plates were both accompanied by the usual warning of "careful, the plates are hot." I have found this to mean the plates are very, very warm. Today, they were scalding. Literally. I actually burned my arm and my wrist trying to enjoy my meal. My enchiladas were a molten liquid of cheese and flavorless sauce. My wife's chimichangas were filled with fine ground beef with less flavor and worse texture than last night's proverbial casserole left-overs. The final straw was the beans and rice. I've had more spice out of a can. It felt like they'd boiled out any desirable character from the whole plate. As I mentioned, I've been to La Frontera many times at many locations, but after my surprisingly unpleasant experience, which had nothing to do with my new-family experiment, I fear they might be on a path for decline.

Worst Mexican food as well as bad service. When we walked in there was four people up at the counter, No one greeted us or acknowledged us. A guy and a girl (*workers) were holding a conversation acting like they had no job to do, finally one of the workers had to tell them to seat us. We were a party of six, 3 of us had smothered burritos. While we were in the restaurant we took alot of restroom breaks (thanks to their cold food). The women's restroom has three stalls 2 of them were pretty disqusting the clean one was only clean because the door would not stay closed. Out of the six of us 4 of us ended with food poisoning 3 of them had the smothered burrito and the other one was a chicken quesadilla with cold chicken. We only stopped at this restaurant because we were craving la Puente and we were to far from la Puente Centerville location. There is NO competition at all LA Puente wins hands down. I've read reviews were people say la frontera food is salty and yes it is. We will NEVER go to this location again or any Frontera. Ps I was forced to give a star *(thanks yelp). They deserve -10.

La Frontera is a poor excuse for a Mexican Restaurant. At least in its current state of management. My family and I have eaten there before (years ago...), and we've have had no issues. But last night's dinner was abysmal. Where do I begin? 1. Lackluster Service: Although "Helena" (her name changed to protect the innocent,) seemed to be competent, virtually all of our orders (a family group of eight) were messed up in one way or another. Although she took our orders methodically, she apparently didn't write everything down, or otherwise help clarify the rather complex menu items to those ordering their food. That meant the kitchen probably misread the orders, which likely added further confusion when the orders were delivered to the table. All they had to do was go back and read her notes, and everything would have been fine. However, it just did not work out that way. It was like musical plates...all eight of us trading dishes as they were brought out, trying to figure out the jigsaw puzzle of main courses and side orders. The management (we'll discuss him later...) even asked a more experienced waiter to assist Helena with the food coming out of the kitchen, but he ended up asking everyone again what they ordered. Finally, after 15 more minutes, they got things sorted out...sort of. Just a nightmare. 2. Mediocre Food Quality: Food was 'meh'...nothing to write home about. I had the stuffed chili rellenos, and although tasty, they were tough. The refried beans were dry and straight out of a can. Most of those in attendance did not finish their dinners, as it was uninspiring, bland, and all the beef-oriented dishes were this bean/chorizo mixture (see below). In fact, even the salsa and chips were bizarre...the chips had some seasoning (paprika?) on one side of each chip, and the salsa wasn't even your typical salsa...more like liquid hot sauce in a squeeze bottle. Oh, and a new basket of chips was $2.25. Pffft. Finally, the taco filling was apparently some house mixture of refried beans and chorizo sausage (an explanatory footnote on the menu informed the customer of this fact in 4 pt. font.) But in reality, it was about 99% beans and 1% sausage...no chorizo to be found in the 'mixture.' What happened to good old-fashioned ground or shredded beef? Apparently this was some method to make tacos cheaply w/o using real meat. Beverages? The margaritas tasted like lime Kool-Aid. Refreshing, but VERY sweet, and virtually no tequila to be found. 3. Non-typical Dining Atmosphere: Think bright corporate cafeteria (or some medical lab up at the U of U with bright spot lights everywhere) ...not what you'd expect for a family Mexican restaurant. Since there was no mood music playing (and were bored waiting for our food to come out,) my wife and her sister went over to the juke box. They loaded in about $3.00 worth of coins...but just one song played (which we could barely hear back over at our table 30 feet away.) Then the juke box stopped playing. No more music. It broke...or it just stole our money. 4. Management that Didn't Seem to Care Much: The restaurant manager, David, was walking around the restaurant all evening, but he didn't seem to care or pay attention to issues very much. His solution to the "Hot sauce" salsa was to add some sour cream to it. Pffft. Even though he got an ear full from my wife on the poor state of affairs with the evening's meal, he just took off 15% for our various troubles, but that was it. Thus, the 1 Star rating (my first ever!) I strongly recommend you avoid this place. Instead, go to La Hacienda in Draper (just south on State Street down to where it turns into Minuteman Drive...just south of 12300 South.) We should have gone there instead.

I went and visited La Frontera today for a late lunch. Getting prepped for a big meeting with bosses tomorrow and I need sustenance as Thor might say. I sat down received my chips and salsa, smokin' hot just the way I like it where you have to keep drinking soda out of fear that your tongue is going to burn off. I absolutely love how predictably awesome the salsa is. Placing my order I got the usual two smothered burritos with rice and beans and did I mention I ordered a Coca Cola with my meal. The food was piping hot, it was delicious as I have ever had at this restaurant. The service was good not amazing but I have no complaints. What prompted me to update my review on this was when I got my receipt. Ten years ago when I first started going here it was one of my favorite options to eat. But at $14 and then plus tip I think that you can get similar quality at half the price elsewhere. The food is still as good as ever, but I feel like some of the other "La," clones have some more competitive pricing on their menus. Again if you are reading my words here, the food is still just as good as ever. I just think the price value isn't quite what it used to be. Especially with so many competing restaurants within two minutes. I love you La Frontera but I don't know if I can afford to pass up on all the other great options that are available nearby.

After a long drive from Los Angeles, my friends and I were starving and found La Frontera. We were greeted and seated quickly. Our server took our order and food came soon thereafter. Food was tasty and the overall experience was good. The issues that bugged me were the dirty restrooms, the vague receipt and the cashier's whatever attitude.

Hair in food, they thought we were trying to get somthing for free, no apology just a look like how dare you say we have hair in our food. I stated I don't want anything I was giving you feedback. Will not go back, this place would be a good nightmare kitchen episode.

A bit disappointing to say the least. Tried because it was close to hotel. Won't happen again. My mothers boyfriend had two saying after dinner- one "man that was good" two "that will make a turd". Well if a turd is your goal go to frontera. If a damn good meal is what you want go to La Puenta on state street and approximately 3500s in same parking lot as bad as coffee.

I think Mexican food has to be considered based on the paradigm of the eater. My desire was fresh-Mex more like Cafe Rio but my family took me here. Which appears good if you're looking for greasy spoon Tex Mex. So I'm grading this not on what I felt because this place wasn't meant for me (that would be a one star) but based on what it is aspiring to be. 4 stars. the atmosphere is... ok, I guess, and the waitstaff were friendly and kept up on drink refills. Word to the wise: if you get a bean and cheese burrito, ask for the cheese to be melted, if you don't, well, you'll get a tortilla filled with beans and cold shredded cheese. yo no say.

I don't have many good things to say about this place. Everything seems to be served with way too much cheese. They ruin the chips with some kind of seasoning. The salsa is no good. Last time I went the fajitas weren't cooked well. Way too much cheese on the enchilada. Distgusting is an understatement.

I started eating at La Frontera (various locations) about 30 years ago. Their smothered chile verde burritos are what kept me coming back. I moved from Utah 15 years ago and eat here whenever I come back to visit. I live in Phoenix now and there are Mexican restaurants on practically every corner. None of them make a burrito as magnificent as these. I would love to see one of these in the Phoenix area! I have eaten Mexican food from Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and Colorado and La Frontera is still my favorite.

This place is great with a authentic taste to dishes and a great price. Place is clean and staff is efficient and friendly. Very similar to La Puente. You also get free unlimited chips and salsa. I got the smothered burrito w cheese and onions ( I ask for the onions on the side, because they do put a lot) and a strawberry and pina colada smoothie, both excellent! FYI: The smoothie came w whipped cream on top which I actually prefer not to get.

I've been eating at LaFrontera for the last 28 years. I mostly frequent the 400 South location, but I often get a "to go" order at the 106th South restaurant. I love the smothered burritos, but the rest of their food is average to below average. The other day I got an order to go of three smothered burritos and a side of beans and was advised that I was not entitled to any salsa unless I ordered another entree. The cashier said It would cost 75 cents for a small container of the same salsa that is totally free for all you can eat when you dine in at the restaurant. I was told this was always their policy, but they had never enforced it before. What a great way to lose business!! Zero stars for the new policy and 4 stars for the smothered burritos.

I had to go here for a family event, a table of 20 or so. Plenty of room, prolly cuz this place is gross. The wait staff was fine, but my auntie's rellenos plate was forgotten about, ended up coming to the table burned. I got flautas. Hard to mess up, right? The beef was gross, overlooked and chewy. The chicken flauta broke in half when I picked it up. And the sour cream comes in packets like the school cafeteria? Weird. I don't have a lot of faith in utah Mexican food, this just reinforced that idea. If someone can tell me where to go, I'd appreciate it.

Terrible, unredeemable service. We waited 45 mins after ordering, never had a server come back to give us refills or an update on our food, and finally just dropped some bills on the table for our drinks and left. Plus, the line to pay was about 30 people long when we left, so that would have sucked balls to wait through, too.

What the hell just happened? We ended up here as our preferred place was closed and what a dissapointment. Anyone who says they have authentic food hasn't really had real Mexican. First, it took 5 minutes once we were seated for our waiter to even show up. Basically it felt as if he wanted to minimize the amount of times he came by our table as by the time he came over, we were ready to order our meal. This place only served chicken and ground beef as the meat. Thy was my first sign. Donde esta carne asada? The tacos that came looked like cafetaria food from high school and tasted as bad. The salsa was really good and you get one free basket of chips. Additional baskets are two bucks. Save your money. You can make better Mexican at home.

The restaurant was old and dirty and not at appealing. The service was not good at all. The food was mediocre at best. The only thing good was the flan. I won't go back.

Years ago we tried La Frontera as it's close to our second house in Draper. It was terrible. However, after 9 years, we decided to go back and give it a try. I'm not sure what changed, but it was amazing. The service was way better than I remember, and the food was actually good. This was one of those moments where you go in, expecting the worst and are pleasantly surprised at how great it is.

We were visiting from Las Vegas this last weekend and my friend suggested this place because its her fiance's fav place. We were at the one in Draper though. What a disqusting restaurant from cleaniness to food quality! The booths were nasty looking as were the walls and everything else. I didnt think it could get worse than just looking but then the food arrived. Honestly I would prefer Del Taco. I dont know how they stay in business. I feel bad even writing such a negative review but people should know and not waste their money. We all ordered chimichangas, one chicken, one shredded beef (which they made ground beef) but they did special make me a shredded beef one per my request and the kids ordered bean and cheese ones. No sauce on them, and deep fried so much they were burnt. The waitress was very sweet though, I do have to say. Other than her the experience was something I wish I could delete from my mind and from by bank card!!! One thing I noticed too was all the other staff was just sitting around chatting while she was busting her butt to get things done.

This was my first visit here. The place was not what I expected, decor-wise, but is large for big parties. It was past lunch time so not busy. I started with the free chips and salsa. Plenty for one, and the salsa was deliciously spicy hot but not too much so. I then had the 2 soft-taco plate with refried beans and rice. The rice was light and fluffy, just like my Grandma used to make. The tacos were filled with ground beef (chicken is also available), lettuce cheese and tomato. I topped them with the salsa to add spice. They were so huge, I took one home for later. Glad I didn't get the 3 count plate. Service was great, with the waiter checking back on me and bringing me a doggy box. I will definitely go back.

Food was great. Wait staff terrible, host and check out rude. The waiter totaled our bill wrong by 15 dollars added a tea to the bill and didn't do the math correct. When we got to the counter to pay we told the guy behind the counter about the difference and he got defensive about the total not being right. I said add it up on your calculator and you will see. Then he did and started saying well I don't know where he got this total from. Still wouldn't take any responsibility. The hostess had a tooth pick in her mouth seating people. The tooth pick was in her mouth the whole time we were there. Terrible experience. If you go, check your bill and be prepared.

Absolutely horrible. My wife and I showed up to meet some friends and the party was a total of about 15 people. Instead of arranging some tables in the dining area they put us in some back storage room and we got to eat surrounded by supplies and cement. They brought us chips and "salsa," which was basically tabasco or hot sauce in a reusable condiment jar. Seriously?? My wife ordered an horchata, which turned out to be in a bottle and tasted exactly like a cinnamon gummy bear. At least they took that one off the ticket when she wouldn't drink it. My entree was supposed to be Chile Verde but when I searched for the meat (pork) I could only find about 6 tiny chunks of chewy "meat" that seemed salty like out of a can. Needless to say I did not ask for a take-home box. Between the two of us I wasted about 25 bucks on this crap place.

  • Matthew F.

Not sure why my neighbors love this place. You do get a lot of food. But it is pretty mediocre. Chips and salsa are usually what decides it for me, their salsa is more of a paste and the chips are nothing special.

Asking around only revealed carnival mexican places, so we had given up on finding a local style mexican restaurant. But, we found this place by accident and was pleasently surprised. Its seat yourself, that was a little unclear, but once seated the service was prompt. My flautas was ok, but The chile verde enchilada was really yummy, I would definitely return here for that.

I've eaten at every Frontera at one time or another. The one on 400 S. in Salt Lake is simply referred to as "The Source" in our family. There is really nothing remarkable about this place. Nothing that really should separate it from the plethora of Mexican restaurants........except their chile verde is like no other. Yes, yes, yes, I know La Puente has it also. I don't want to discuss the how's and why's. My family eats at Frontera, and avoids knockoffs, out of loyalty I like the old school salsa that in no way resembles pico de gallo It sounds crazy, but I like the fact that the drinks are a bit flat. So two stars for the restaurant and five for the chile verde.

greasy Tex Mex. got the combo platter it was mostly refried beans, cheese, and shredded lettuce. At least they sell beer. they make Corona-Ritas.. The place is too well lit and does not really have much in the way of atmosphere, although they have made a big effort to decorate. i went here at random because it was a short walk from my hotel

In all the years I have lived in the Sandy area I have never once thought to come to this location. It is sort of tucked away in a little strip mall, and I have never heard anyone recommend it. That being said, Blue's family loves it and invited us along one night for dinner. Blue was not very happy, he claims that he never gets anything good from there and he doesn't understand why his family loves it so much. I decided to keep an open mind on the matter however and was looking forward to the meal. First things first, the traditional chips and salsa. The chips were a generic sort of the corn variety that you can get from any grocery store. The salsa...wasn't so much a salsa as it was a sauce. When we asked if they per chance had a chunkier salsa (or any other salsa for that matter) they said no. While trying to decide what to order, I happened to notice a Gianormous plate of nachos being delivered to a nearby table, and they looked gooooood. I decided on the nachos with carnitas and anxiously awaited my tower of meat, cheese, guac, and sour cream. Unfortunately, what was presented to Blue and I was a sad shadow of what had been placed in front of the other table. We wondered if maybe our server thought we had asked for the 1/2 order, but when we asked, she informed us that indeed this was the full order. When we asked her why ours was less than half of the other tables, she informed us that the kitchen guy had "messed up" on the size for the other table, and that he had gotten in trouble for it. Ummmm....ok. That all being said, the nachos were decent. I also had a chance to try the smothered burrito......and....meh. With all of the options for Mexican food in the valley I don't think that I would go out of my way to go here again, but if someone was dead set on going there, I would probably oblige.

I've eaten La Frontera hundreds of times, starting back in the early 80's when they were that teeny tiny house on 4th south? (I can't remember because I've moved to Phoenix) Anyway, I get to SLC a few times a year and this trip my family ordered La Frontera to go. WTF happened? it was terrible. Maybe I'm used to getting excellent Mexican food here in Phoenix but it was so salty I couldn't even finish my meal. I got the Ranchero Burritos and the sauce was terrible. Straighten up La Frontera, from reading the other reviews you'll be out of business pronto.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
