My family discovered this Chinese restaurant when we first moved to SLC, and we drove from one end of the valley to the other to partake of the delicious meals served in this unassuming little restaurant. My only wish would be that they would update their decor so it doesn't feel so much like a wanna-be diner. For nearly a decade, we've watched the crowds grow as the word has gotten out, but with great service, an excellent take-out service, great prices, and ever-perfect food, Chin-Wah remains a family favorite, despite how much we hate crowds. They're so service friendly there that some of the waitresses have memorized our preferred order! We love the place so much that I bought their logo T-shirts for my family for Christmas presents. Try the Orange Beef and the Phoenix Chicken. Yummmmmm!

Honestly the worst Chinese I ever had. My 9 year old couldn't chew the beef any longer, when he told me it felt like it was getting bigger. We still joke about it.

It's only 4 stars for one dish, the infamous Phoenix chicken. Most of the other stuff is meh ok. The place ain't to fancy, but if you like spicy ask for the Phoenix chicken with extra chili sauce.

This was a great Chinese restaurant. Very authentic. Tons of food for a little my money I would totally come back here again

Two of my friends entered the restaurant at around 2:30 p.m. for lunch. They ordered two entrees. One of the entrees was unsatisfactory. A replacement order was requested immediately, after tasting two bites; the manager said returning the entree and replacing it were both denied, in a very rude and insulting manner. Upon realizing that the manager was not going to offer any solution, the two customers got up to leave as one was not going to be able to eat her entree. The sweet and sour pork oil tasted old and the meat tasteless. They were told aggressively that they had to pay for their meals. When the customer stated she refused to pay because she was not able to eat it, they threatened to call the police. The customer panicked, and paid for food that they had not eaten, under protest. The bill was all they had budgeted for their lunch, and caused them great distress. The Supply of Goods and Services Act of 1982 states that In some cases a diner who is not satisfied with the meal may refuse to pay for various reasons. This is a contract involving two parties, the diner and the restaurant. If the diner feels that the restaurant did not comply with their end of the contract then the diner can maintain that they are released from their side of the contract... It is shocking to think that a restaurant who depends entirely on their reputation to stay in business would completely ignore the needs of their customers. The customers were willing to eat the food if a replacement would have been provided. The customers were treated in such a rude and threatening manner as to make it impossible to stay any longer in the establishment. We reported them to the Chamber of Commerce.

I could never recommend this place for food. I ordered the 10.00 lunch "grilled halibut" and ended up with a deep fried piece of cod. This is not the first time I have had orders come up wrong. DO NOT ORDER TAKE OUT, or at least check your take out before you leave. The service is nice but the food is not worth the money.

Should have been a dead giveaway judging by the lack of bodies eating here that this place was not good. Ordered what seemed to be the only semi-healthy option on the menu, Cashew Chicken. This dish is 90% celery and other vegetables that are soggy due to the overwhelming amount of heavy sauce involved. You would think that at least the rice would be good seeing it is a Chinese restaurant. The rice tastes like the Minute rice that you throw in the microwave. Dry and no flavor. You're better off going to Panda Express (which I'm not a fan of) and spending half the price.

I really enjoy Chin-Wah. The food is consistently good however the service is consistently poor. Tonight our waiter was rude and confrontational. Midway through the meal they changed the waitress to a better one however when we told her we wanted her to have all of the tip because of her improved service she told the other waiter and he came over to our table and got in our face about it. Ruined dinner for us. The Phoenix chicken was a hit as always as was the crab ragoons. I wish I could find as good food w better service hence the 3 stars. Service is as important as the food.

This was our first visit, we brought our two kids and ordered the family style meal with sweet and sour chicken, chow mein, fried shrimp and egg rolls. We also ordered a side of pot stickers. The sweet and sour chicken was very good as well as the rest of food in the combo. The kids loved and my husband liked that they had real chili oil. The pot stickers were not my favorite but I would say the food overall was a win. The portions were huge, we definitely took enough home to feed our family another night. The service was great. Our servers name was Scott and he was very attentive and friendly. He made sure we had everything we needed. The food wasn't super authentic but for American Chinese it exceeded my expectations. We will likely return.

I got the lunch special #2, which had sweet and sour chicken, chow mein, and ham fried rice. It was pretty good, but got a little mushy from the noodles being so saucy. I probably just ate a little too slow. The service was awesome, our waiter was very helpful. The food came out super fast and fresh. It is a little americanized, but still good. Will definitely come back to try more things!

The service started out hopeful, but quickly became very lacking. The wait staff only gets numbered name tags. No wonder they are miserable. The appetizers were a joke. My egg roll drained out an ounce of oil left in it from the deep fryer. My husband's combination dish was made with what appeared to be angel hair pasta noodles. It looked like a potluck haystack gone wrong. A side of rice cost $2.00. Seriously, a Chinese restaurant charging for rice. My hot & sour soup confused temperature hot with spice. Adding a cup of ice cubes didn't cool it off. Needless to say we won't be returning.

Very disappointed with the service and food today. We did not get our soup until after we had been served out entrées, my friend had to remind our server about the drink she ordered, which was wrong when it finally came mid way through dinner. The service was very slow, which was surprising because the restaurant wasn't that busy. Our server was also somewhat abrupt, slow to bring our ticket and slower to return our credit cards. I'm not certain I will return anytime soon.

The worst American interpretation of Chinese food ever. Bad service, overpriced, and bad food. I was not able to finish my meal and went elsewhere to eat after. The chicken was dry and overcooked. The waitress was rude and unwilling to help us, and also made several inappropriate comments. The egg drop soup was frozen veggies and chicken bullion. $50 for the amount of food I would pay $25 for anywhere else. I will not be back.

Great Edamame's! And yummy egg drop soup. The Mongolian beef with white rice was very good and very large portions. For sure my husband and I will be sharing one plate next time. Thank you for a great service Brandon!

If you want to eat food with hair in it then go to Chin Wah. I always said their egg fu yong was the best ever. Until today. Went with my daughter and ordered the egg fu yong and lettuce chicken wrap. We found hair and complained about it. No one apologized. They only offered a 20 percent discount. I told the waiter I wanted to talk to the manager. She Took forever to come out. She Acussed us of lying. She said she would not charge for the egg fu yong but we had to pay for the chicken lettuce wrap. I told her I wasn't going to pay for something I wasn't going to eat or take home. She gave us attitude. It was horrible. I told her I was going to call the police and I did. We were ignored by the staff. It would have been so simple for them to offer an apology and pick up the tab but no, the police had to come for this one. The manager/hostess said she didn't see a hair on the plate I told her to bring out the waiter. He said wasn't sure if it was a hair but he saw something about four inches long. He said this in front of the police. So after much deliberation, the manager said she was not going to charge for the food but she sent a message with the police officer: " You are no longer welcome at this restaurant and will be arrested for tresspasing if you come back." Yes, as if Im going to want to come back after being treated so poorly, insulted and given such gross food. I WILL NEVER GO BACK AFTER BEING A LOYAL CUSTOMER SINCE 1991. You guys have no customer service skills, no good will and deserve to be out of business!!!!!! Gross, gross, gross food and service. You dont even deserve a star but the rating system will not let me post unless I give you at least one. You deserve a negative 5 star!!!!!!!

Their food is edible.... The staff I have encountered the 3 times I have been here have been really bad. Inattentive, rude, condescending, abrupt, to name a few. The restaurant looks pretty dated, and the manager who comes from the front to the back a lot looks unkept. I have officially X'd this place off of my list of places to eat. There is no food that is good enough to make up for crummy service, attitudes, and unkept staff.

Our family favorite. Great egg foo young but our favorite is almond chicken with Brown gravy. We will visit again for sure. Very good prices.

I've been going to Chin Wah since they were in the old Perkins right nearby. The new restaurant is much better and cleaner so it was a big step up. I agree with some other reviews. They are busy usually so the service can be hit or miss. That's the only reason I'm giving this place four stars. As far as the food it is extremely excellent for the price. I can't recommend the phoenix chicken enough. Try it spicy if you can. It's not too hot. It's sooooooo good. I also love the Shrimp in spicy garlic sauce. It actually looks unappetizing but tastes divine. Phenomenal food for the price. Great portions. Hit or miss service. Usually busy for dinner so arrive early to get a table.

My friend and I went here last Saturday. I was hungry, so ordered the appetizer platter which was very good, less than $10. It was within the time for the specials so we each ordered one of those. The servings were large, too large and we took ours home. The rice was fluffy, the shrimp very tasty. A bit too many peanuts in my dish, but it was still good. The service was excellent, with call backs to see how we were doing. I would definitely like to try other dishes here. The parking lot was busy, but the place looked too quiet. It was the shades they had over the windows, for once inside, it was quite busy.

This place has been around as long as I can remember. The food is average for a Chinese place and the service is hit and miss. For the south end of the salt lake called it is a good deal and a clean establishment. They do have one of the better sweet and sour sauces.

    (4)
  • Annie J.

Yuck. Sloppy mess. The breading on the sweet and sour chicken is gross it's always undercooked and has a strange flavor. The chow mein is soupy slop. Tried this place twice--horrible both times. Will never go back.

  • Mike D.

My colleague and I went here for dinner. We had Mongolian Beef and Phoenix Chicken. The Phoenix chicken was good and we ate most of that. The Mongolian beef was poor and just seemed to be boiled meat. Overall the food lacked flavor and quality. The service was friendly but lacked in returns to the table. I will not return to this restaurant.

I haven't been here in ages. It's fresh, portions are generous and they do it like all other Chinese restaurants do but it's just so bland. Bland. Their sweet and sour is pink, viscous and bland. Their chow mein is fresh, colorful and bland. Kung pow? Bland. General Tao's? Bland. Egg Foo Yong? I dunno. I don't care for egg-based Chinese food but if I were to guess? Bland. Perhaps that's why Sandy citizens flock to this place in droves. Yes, I'm saying much of Sandy City is bland. They've been in business forever. They've got a new and expanded location which looks delightful on the outside. It's convenient, and I promise not to judge you if that's the kind of food you like to eat. It's just so very bland...

  • Deb W.

I went here yesterday and LOVED it. I agree it is Americanese but I like that kind of food. The Egg Foo Yong gravy is the best I have had (does not taste like the standard gravy packet I have come to despise), and the Jalapeno Ham Fried Rice was awesome! The yellow, pineapple based sweet and sour sauce was not my fave, but I am not blaming them; (I ate it anyway) I just prefer the red, grenadine based sweet and sour sauce. I was glad that I did not have to order my customary side of hot mustard just to add some flavor. I will definitely come back, I am in love with the Jalapeno rice.

I love their food and am giving it a perfect review solely on the food. Best sesame chicken I've ever had. I don't like pot stickers normally however I love chin wahs pot stickers. I agree on everything said about the service but their food is just so yummy!

I have had better Chinese food from a hole in the wall restaurant. I am never eating here again and I recommend that others should look elsewhere.

  • Kelcee F.

Be forewarned. This is NOT a Chinese restaurant... This is an Americanese restaurant. With that being said, I love it. I don't come here to get my Chinese kicks, I come here to get my Chin Wah kicks. The soup they call the Egg Drop Soup is more of a hearty vegetable soup. Its good. 100x better when you have a cold. The lunch special #7 -Ham fried rice, chicken broccoli, and lemon shrimp is what keeps me coming back. I love Chin Wah, and always will. My love will probably only continue to grow as I continue to age, seeing as the restaurant is completely catered to an elderly pallet.

  • John C.

The food was decent, the service was lousy. We ordered the general special which was $37 for 2 people. The food was average at best, what made it most unpleasant was there were 10 tables with a single server.

    (3)
  • Kelee A.

The food was disgusting and the service even worse. There was no sauce for the pot stickers, the shrimp fried rice was dry and it had a bone in my Kung Pao Chicken. When I mentioned it to the waiter he didn't seem to care. I wonder how the owners would feel. Our food took longer than most to come out.... Needless to say no apologies! Terrible and I will never eat here ever again!!

I ordered wonton soup and it came with BBQ pork, chicken breast, water chestnut, shrimp, carrots, celery, green onions, noodle, and extremely sweet soup. It was like just sugar water and was almost $9. My husband ordered lunch combo and it looked like just tr*sh....tons of salad dressing all over the plate that includes fried rice, kung pao chicken , and salad so he only tastes salad dressing for everything. This is not truly Chinese restaurant at all. won't come back.

I am not a complainer and rarely do I voice it unless I am given way bad service! When we were seated the hostess said our server would be with us shortly. So we decided on our menu items and waited, after about 10 min I started looking at my watch as people who worked there kept passing by us. I whispered to my husband, should we just go? I didn't want to be served by a company who didn't care and there was hardly any one in the restaurant so they were NOT busy at all. I use to be a server and I knew how to treat them. My husband said let's wait a little longer. After we waited 40 MINUTES my husband told a server who walked past us that we have been waiting 40 min and no one has taken our order in a nice voice. Well the server was way annoyed with us (he was probably our server) and took our order. He was annoyed with us the whole time! We are too nice, we still stuck around even the food was not that great, and we still have the guy a tip! Maybe next time your restaurant makes a mistake, own up to it and discount the food. I WILL NEVER STEP FOOT IN CHINWAH AGAIN!!! You just lost a customer!

A Sandy staple by far the best chinese in sandy. Though ever since they moved they kinda went bland on their taste either new chefs or just the fact its a brand new clean kitchen cuz it doesnt have any of that good old "flavoring" that comes only with a used kitchen after many years.

Back again doing our yearly convention down the street, Chin Wah has a new dish called General Tao's chicken it is just outstanding, it compliments the shrimp with walnut. Chin Wah is never disappointing for any of us working at the convention, we can't wait to come back next year for some more great Chinese food.

the food was pretty good. Service was good. It was just good, nothing great but worth a stop. We went on Friday night and it was busy but we got seated fast and served quickly as well. The Mongolian beef was my favorite. The Phoenix chicken was good too.

  • Emily C.

Chin Wah is a nice looking restaurant, definitely better than most Chinese restaurants I've been in. Unfortunately the food was not better than most Chinese restaurants. I ordered a vegetable chow mein, which ended up just being vegetables in a gelatin-like sauce over crunchy noodles. My husband wasn't impressed with his food, although it is my sister-in-law's favorite place. So yah.

  • Summer M.

I don't like this place at all. My husband and family loves it. I think its too greasy and "American." and I agree with a previous listing--it is very bland.

    (2)
  • Christine W.

Chin Wah seems to have lost some of it's mo-jo since moving locations. The egg drop soup is FULL of vegetables which might appeal to some people but i prefer no vegetables in my egg drop soup. Ham fried rice is pretty good. The only thing I really LOVE there is the Phoenix chicken which I will continue to return to Chin Wah for. There is rarely a wait, even on weekends.

    (3)
  • Kris I.

Reeeeeally good fried rice. Mediocre phoenix chicken. They messed up our order and gave us crispy chow mein instead of the soft noodles. I loved the fried rice, but the rest of the food was one stop below "okay." Not terrible, but not okay either.

    (2)
  • Debbie M.

Chin-wah gets 4 stars for their ham fried rice alone. It is, quite simply, the best around. The egg drop soup is awesome too. The rest of the food is pretty standard fare, and I think Mandarin Garden (just up on Highland Drive) has the edge on freshness, taste, and ambience. We have been to Chin-Wah dozens of times over the years and have always had good service. My husband usually gets the Phoenix Chicken and I like the Almond Chicken with sweet and sour sauce.

    (4)
  • C. C.

I have only one complaint, but it's a big one: the place looks like a Denny's inside. Would it kill them to create just a *little* ambiance? I walked in, saw the decor (or lack thereof) and thought 'This is a Chinese place? Are you kidding me?' That being said, the food exceeded my expectations. The egg-drop soup was amazing! I don't know what they put in it, but it was a very happy surprise. I was pleased with the food, and the service was great.

  • Annen J.

Just horrible. We had take out, Phoenix Chicken, Pork Lo Mein and Pot Sticker. All were just awful. The Phoenix Chicken was soggy, and was basically just chicken fingers covered with syrupy sweet and sour sauce. The Lo Mein noodles were overcooked and the pork was almost non existent. The pot stickers were rubbery and barely filled with meat. All in all, just awful Chinese food. I would recommend Fong's in Draper instead.

Chin Wah rocks! It is on my short list of places that I absolutely have to go when I visit Utah. I've watched pretty much every other place in that strip mall close down, but Chin Wah remains! I love the Phoenix Chicken and their Ham Fried Rice with the tasty brown gravy on it. I know, I know...It couldn't really get any less authentic, but that doesn't matter. Get over there when you want some tasty food!

I'm a little surprised at all the negative reviews of this place considering they just moved to a bigger space and the place was completely packed on a saturday night. I've never actually had to wait for anything in Utah, except here where the wait was about 30 minutes. They have a good waiting area so you're not standing next to people's tables uncomfortable as they eat. I'm very used to having authentic chinese food served by actual chinese people so it was a bit of a change when everyone in this place was american. It was odd to see a chinese food menu completely in english too. The food however was pretty tasty, we ordered the phoenix chicken (I loved the sweetness), mongolian beef, pork fried rice (the best out of the choices), honey garlic shrimp (really similar to the walnut shrimp minus the mayo), and the buddha's feast (great assortment of veggies but a bit too many mushrooms for my liking). I left completely satisfied with the food and the service. It could be a little more authentic but for the area we were in, it was probably perfect. I also had to ask for chopsticks, good thing I knew they had them because I saw some kid lunge them at the window. Tip: Expect a wait and expect that this is american chinese food. But still delicious.

I moved to Chicago a few years ago, and haven't been able to find a Chinese food place that holds a candle to Chin-Wah! I love it! Every time I come back to Utah for a visit, we have to stop there! The new restaurant is really nice, and has great ambiance. The food is INCREDIBLE! My favorites are the Phoenix Chicken and the Sweet & Sour Chicken. Unlike most Chinese food restaurants - the meat is high quality (meaning you don't have to chew for 2 minutes before swallowing). I highly recommend Chin-Wah for delicious American-ized Chinese Food!

This place is terrible.. Heard good reviews, but I think that I am going to wait on eating Chinese food in SLC.. This is just as bad as Fortune Cuisine down the street. What is soo hot about their Phoenix Chicken?? I thought it just sucked. Should've gone to Panda Express and got their Orange Chicken, some chow mein, and fried rice and called it a night.. Will not be going back and will not recommend coming here to anyone.

Chin wah and Raphael's have been our family favorites for all the 15 yrs we lived on Flint Dr. Things changed and I moved to St. George 2yrs ago. Just ate there since here for the holidays. The egg foo young is still the best anywhere and the fresh chow mien is great. My only disappointment was the Phoenix Chicken which has changed alot from the unique dish it always and could only find at Chin Wah. It was larger pieces and is just like Sweet and Sour Chicken you can get anywhere. But will go back sometime, but just won't any longer "crave Chin Wah food", so it might be quite a while. But much luck and long success.

  • Spencer S.

Chin-Wah is seriously Americanized Chinese food. Their are no big flavors or scary ingredients, just relatively bland Chinese-like dishes that are very sweet and devoid of all spice. Thats not to say the food is bad, its just not particularly engaging. The one bright spot is the service, the wait staff is attentive and delightful.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
