Shirley's is the place I always end up at when I don't know what I want for lunch and I'm stuck in the 5 mile radius of restaurants close to work. It's not bad, but I never find myself "craving" anything from Shirley's. Probably because its literally the exact same thing as Kneaders. And I'm not a big super fan of that either. It's sandwiches, maybe even "fancy" sandwiches, but sandwiches nonetheless. I had an issue when I came here once at 4 pm and literally every single pastry item on their menu was sold out. I get it. Bakery. Fresh. Whatever. But I'm still annoyed that they were sold out. I drove over to Kneaders and got a fruit tart within minutes. I think Kneaders just prepares better? I don't know. All I know is that it was annoying and the girl on the drive through speaker was absolutely clueless that I was there in the line, yelling "Hello?" into the speaker while she talked with her friends ON THE MICROPHONE? It's weird all around and I JUST WANTED AN ECLAIR. The sandwiches are decent here. Last trip I had turkey, cranberry and stuffing sandwich because I like to pretend it's Thanksgiving every day. The sandwich was cold (I was hoping it would be hot), but decently tasting. Not my favorite faux thanksgiving leftover sandwich, but it was fine. I also had a sugar cookie. Which had cloves and cinnamon in it so I really have a hard time calling it a sugar cookie when it tasted vaguely like a snickerdoodle. Whatever. Now I'm just being a bitter dessert elitist. All in all, Shirley's isn't a bad choice. I know lots of people love it. I loved it a lot more when it was small and less known (hipster Rebekah comes out with a vengeance) because I think it tasted better and was less mass-produced. But I don't hate it and I don't wish I was on a different galaxy when I'm eating it. So I guess that's a plus.

Pros and Cons of Shirleys: PRO: The ingredients are obviously very fresh, the homemade soups are delicious, and the pastries are divine. The staff is also very friendly. CON: The drivethru is a TERRIBLE option if you are in a hurry. It can take anywhere from 10-20 minutes in line. Inside is actually faster, but they still move a little bit slow. They do not do call ahead orders. You never EVER see a manager, anywhere. Overall: I would go here only if I wanted to either dine in, or was willing to run in to grab to go food. There are many faster options for a tasty sandwich in the togo department. You can tell this is a local owned business, it feels like the owner has never run a restaurant before, and still has lots to learn.

I really like Shirley's! My mom stayed at a Marriott nearby awhile ago and would pop in for a treat, and she recommended it to me. I'm glad she did! It's similar to Kneaders except, in my opinion, better and fresher. Their sandwiches are REALLY good and made on their fresh, homemade bread, and you can't go wrong with any of their pastries (my husband and I recently took home a 12-pack of orange rolls and cinnamon rolls, which were insanely delicious). I wish there was one closer to me, but I do visit Utah county pretty regularly. The pricing is very reasonable as well. I highly recommend this restaurant and bakery!

Well for starters there's nothing better for breakfast than a great sweet roll with coconut cream and a glass of milk. This place has both and it's amazing. The orange rolls are killer as are the strawberry. Anything u get will do the job so get here.

Kneaders is gross. Shirley's is better. It's classier, the food quality is better, and the employees are helpful. However, one star off for the employee singing Mormon hymns. Not appropriate, professional, or normal to say the least. Not everyone is crazed up religious. Please pop your bubble.

I love their cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting and raisins. Their deli items are pretty good, but the cinnamon rolls are the main attraction for me.

  • London F.

This place was adorable, and I loved their desserts...but both of the sandwiches that we got were completely bland. I said to my husband, "Mine tastes like water" and he said, "Whoa, I was just thinking the same thing about mine." I really wanted to like it because it was such a good sounding sandwich (the chipotle chicken little bun)...but alas.

Thank you Shirley's. I Was able to get a warm cup of coffee in the middle of Provo and an amazing cinnamon roll. Woman at the register/counter was extremely friendly and recommended some local spots!

Nothing I can say will do justice to the blueberry and raspberry sweet rolls here. You just need to get off Yelp right now and go get some to understand!

The space is great. Clean, bright and very welcoming. We stopped in during some tire work across the street. The chicken tortilla soup wasn't exactly my taste, but the kids enjoyed their grilled cheese sammys and the egg salad was delish.

If I close my eyes really tight, I feel like I'm in a Kneaders. Yes, Shirley's is a bakery / sandwich shop much like Kneaders, which means it has all sorts of average to above average items, like turkey and bacon and avocado sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, eclairs (which didn't taste like eggs at all) and rolls. I didn't have a problem with the service. I thought the space was cozy enough. I enjoyed my sandwich because I didn't expect anything gastronomically unique. The turkey was really chunks of the Thanksgiving kind, not deli style. The bread was soft and chewy. I wanted to try a bit of the soup my friend was eating (corn chowder), but decided a full sandwich was enough, and I do want to go back to try the cinnamon rolls (I really appreciated how egg-less the eclairs were, though I know that's just a personal taste) because they looked just how I like them--overly frosted, softy, gooey . . . I can't say this place has the freshest ingredients or even slightly unique flavors, or even that you're better off here than at a place like Kneader's; however, if you're in the mood for Zupa's / Paradise Cafe / Kneader's / every other bakery restaurant in Utah County for around 8 dollars a meal, you probably won't be disappointed.

I got the daily special: ham and cheese on French bread, and a side of chicken noodle soup. The sandwich was about as standard as ham and cheese goes, and the soup was a step up from Campbell's Chunky-grade. I didn't try any of the bakery items, so I can't speak to their quality. As nearly everyone else seems to agree, this place is just like Kneaders: the food, setup, decorations. As I have been unimpressed with Kneaders as of late, I don't know if I'll return to either of these places. It may be more worthwhile (and economical) to just make your own at home.

Quite simply: Shirley's pastries, raspberry cinnamon rolls, and chicken n' wild rice soup are to die for! They use high quality ingredients and are fairly priced. It's so classy and clean outside and in making this the perfect place to bring out-of-towners.

Wanted to try something new so we came here during dinner time. I ordered an egg salad sandwich and my boyfriend had the Chipotle chicken panini, we shared hawaiian chips, and their old-fashioned root beer. The inside of the cafe is adorable and service was friendly.

I went here with a coworker and was mostly unimpressed by everything about the place. From the counter staff, to the decor, to the coffee to the baked goods. The cinnamon rolls seemed to have an inch of that thick white frosting like you get on cinnamon rolls at the big grocery stores, the coffee wasn't very hot and was weak. I guess the thing that surprised me the most was the lack of selection. Everything looked the same. All the pastries looked like pale doughy stuff with gobs of thick white frosting. No variety at all, the cinnamon rolls looked like the cookies that looked like the ..... well that looked like everything else!!! Others reviews don't line up with mine and when that happens i try to go back and give the place a second chance. in all fairness i will do that next time i am in Provo.

I was happy to see a longtime provo baking institution opening up a full fledged restaurant. I was not happy after going to said restaurant. This is annoyingly a carbon copy of Kneaders, which bothers me on a few levels. First off, it looks like a scrapbook store. It's new, so there's that at least. Second, the employees are inept high school students. Awkward. And third, the food is just not good enough to make me put up with points one and two. I ordered a salad, and we were staying there to eat. My salad was literally crammed into a tiny plastic takeout container. It was impossible to eat as it was spilling everywhere, and was not up to par for an entrée size salad. Husband had an unremarkable sandwich on subpar bread. The last thing I need in my life is another Kneaders. I don't see myself ever coming back here. Truth hurts, but that's how I roll.

These cinnamon rolls are seriously the best in the state! You can't buy anything else that comes close to these. They have amazing flavors, but the standard cream cheese is hard to beat. If you are trying to get a promotion, proposing to your girlfriend, or holding a meeting to promote world peace, then bring a dozen of these bad boys. I guarantee success, unless you eat them all before you share.

CINNAMON ROLLS! Try them. Trust me. And try the fruit ones. They recently expanded and their new location is really nice! food and rolls are crazy cheap!

Shirley and I used to have a thing. She was close to my work, so during my lunch break I'd walk over, get a quickie, and go back happy and satisfied. The one day she quit the afternoon deli-ites. No more cold turkey. No more beef. But now she's back. Sure, she's too far to walk anymore, but she's willing to meat me. I had to go. She had sample cinnamon rolls and carrot cake. It was awesome, but I made a mistake--I cannot resist a good meatball sandwich. My group got a turkey avocado, a BLT, and some soup. Everyone's stuff came before the meatball--in fact it was a long delay. When it came, it wasn't an Italian meatball. It was some teryaki/BBQ ball and cheese on a roll and it didn't do it for me. The bread was great, and the other sandwiches were great. I guess it had just been too long, and I couldn't keep it together. I'll still go again ...

The baked goods are very good and fresh. The pumpkin cupcake/bread is nice and moist and the cream cheese frosting is good without being too sweet. The cookies and the cinnamon rolls are very fresh and yummy, too. The rolls are fresh and soft. The tomato bisque is very good and chock full of stuff. The turkey, bacon, avocado is a huge sandwich and I really like the turkey cranberry stuffing sandwich. The decor is very nice, warm, cozy, and welcoming. A small stone fireplace is a cute touch. The employees are nice and friendly. It is very clean. It also appears to be very popular, as I noticed crowds in not so peak times. Service was pretty quick on my visits. They appear to have a lot of bakery items in large packages to-go and other honeys, jams, etc to take home or for gifts and even a little station where you can get packaging and ribbons to gift wrap your purchase for a little extra $. The one thing I would add would be a pepper grinder on the table. It may just not be that common in this area. I will definitely come back when in town to try more of the menu.

Lovely French inspired bakery. Only four stars because they don't have a full breakfast menu. Everything they do here they do it really well.

For the past month, a few of us from work have been calling in and having 4 English Scones (the rating is for the scones) reserved, letting Shirley's know that we will be in within 30 - 40 mins. Well today, (star rating for service is 1/2 of a star). We went to pick up the scones, and were told that the Baker would like to speak with us. Gabby, the baker told us that we would have to now pre-order the scones the day before pick-up, because they run out and don't have them for others to purchase. As of today Gabby, the baker. You will have 4 extra for your other customers. YOU JUST LOST OUR BUSINESS..... You should have just tried making more scones. That is what you are in business for...

Shirley's Cinnamon Rolls are laced with an addictive chemical that make you crave them fortnightly. That's right. Okay, probably not. But on my list of decadent baked goods, they're most certainly at the top. They're as big as your head, and pricey, especially when you buy them by the tray (I've heard.) Don't give it a ton of thought. Just buy them, take them home or back to the office, and you'll have a built-in fan club for life. They come in flavors, too - regular cinnamon, raspberry (it's not real raspberry though, more like raspberry flavoring), and orange (with real orange zest - also very very good!). I don't know how they make them, or what they do back there in that kitchen, but the result is buttery, gooey, flavorful, soft, and unquestionably phenomenal. Oh yeah - Shirley also makes nearly every other kind of baked treat you can think of: delicious breads (sourdough, whole grain, etc.), rolls (dinner, ranch, potato, butterflake, you name it), donuts & danish, and lots of other things I'm not remembering because the sweet rolls occupy that brain space. There are so many pros for Shirley's that the cons seem insignificant. But here they are, for the sake of being thorough - - restrictive open hours (it seems to change frequently?) - expensive - they no longer serve lunch like back in the good ol' days Shirley, you are a gypsy woman who beguiles all who partake of your lovely guilt-ridden pound-packing wares. Don't ever stop.

The cinnamon rolls were good but the service was horrible. Only had one actual cinnamon roll and all the rest were flavored. The lady was not helpful at all. Would not go again.

Pros: Best Rolls Around - Cinnamon, Orange & Coconut are my clear favorites. Cons: Expensive Sometimes out of stock early - I guess it's what you'd expect with rolls this good.

I actually met Shirley the owner while I was in there and asked her questions about the baked goods. She actually seemed like she does a high amount of drugs and even though I am not saying she does she did seem very high strung in an unnatural way. She couldn't seem to answer questions about her own desserts in a knowledgeable way and needless to say I didn't feel like eating their food after.

The place is good but I don't go out of my way to go there. They have good fresh bread and rolls but its just a little on light side for me. I don't like their brownies at all, too mushy. But most everything is good but not great.

We visited Shirley's twice in two days. Loved the raspberry rolls & the cinnamon rolls with cream cheese, and the kids loved the cinnamon twists. Prices are really reasonable. Highly recommend.

The bakery is phenomenal and continues the tradition that Shirley's bakery up the road has maintained for years. If you ever need dinner rolls--Shirley's are the best. I'm excited that they built this fun little cafe. The sandwiches I've had have been exceptional. The BLT is perfect, but my fav is the Turkey (real pulled turkey- not turkey roll) Bacon Avocado on Focaccia bread. Wow! Their chips are homemade. Service is a bit slow but the girl who helped me said it was her first day, so it will improve. Their soups are great too. The salads are pretty good. Lots of meat and cheeses to choose from. The have a huge selection of baked goods, cupcakes, eclairs (did I mention the ECLAIRS), breads, etc. They take AMEX, do not have pebble ice, and unfortunately have Pepsi - not coke products. This place is gonna be busy and be around a long time. I don't always eat eclairs- but when I do, I prefer "dos Shirley's."

Shirley's recently expanded to include a deli. The soups are seriously delicious and you can definitely tell that they are made fresh. The chips they serve with the sandwiches are also fantastic. I am not much of a sandwich person but I did like their ham and swiss. They used good quality ham not compressed lunchmeat garbage. This will become my regular soup and sandwich location. Way better than Zupa's or Kneaders.

Shirley's moved from their location on the corner down the road just a little bit. Broiler Express went out of business and Shirley's made a beautiful dining room addition to that location. I would compare Shirley's to Kneaders and Zupas and say that Shirley's new cafe blows them both out of the water!! Pros: FOREVER faster than Kneaders. I asked for a cupcake and they just went straight to the case and gave it to me. It couldn't have taken more than 10 seconds, which is roughly 300 times faster than Kneaders. They immediately gave me my soup and the sandwich came about 4 minutes later. And they were busy! FAR better quality than Zupas. The soups were made fresh that day, and it showed. The bread was baked fresh that day and tasted that way. The cup of soup was about 1.5x the size of Zupas and the sandwich was probably 1.75x the size of a Zupas sandwich INSANE blueberry cinnamon roll samples. Super fresh, obviously real berries, perfectly light yet rich icing. Ah, I'm drooling again. Cons: A little pricey. You're going to spend between $2-4 more per person than Zupas, but it's pretty on par with Kneaders in price. Once I tasted the food though, I immediately forgot about my wallet. Not the most gigantic dining room, but there was a side room with nobody in it, so there's definitely enough space for people to come and go. TL;DR WAY better than Kneaders and Zupas, just slightly more pricey. They are the real deal.

I am reviewing the Southwest Chicken Salad I had yesterday at Shirley's new location with a drive through. I wanted a quick but healthy lunch and so I thought I'd give it a try. I first waited in the drive through for over 10-15 minutes while the car in front of me and the girl at the window chatted, laughed heartily, chatted more, etc. I was sure it was just they were visiting due to the food order not being ready, but after that long, I started feel like I was invisible and didn't feel like staying. About the time I was going to back out, they finally stopped and the lady got her food. igive people the benefit of the doubt and was very friendly to the young man who helped me at the window. I had high hopes for this salad. The Southwest Chicken Salad: Lots of fresh romaine lettuce with cucumber, some red onion, canned corn, canned black beans, shredded chicken breast, corn tortilla strips. Dressing was thousand island tasting with a little taco seasoning added? The salad was all fresh tasting, but I felt like I'd gotten there at the "end of the day" and they had run out of everything but lettuce. There was probably an ounce of chicken spread throughout the salad, 4 grape tomatoes, halved, an ounce of corn and an ounce of beans. When I was done with this salad, I was looking for something with substance. So, let me tell you what I did. I went to Walmart and re-created the same salad. Shredded chicken $3.48 for a lb. Lettuce $2.50 a bag, Grape tomatoes$ 2.48 lb, fresh cilantro $.50, Can of black beans and corn, $.68 cents each. For $10.32 plus tax (salad here was $7.99 plus tax) I can feel my entire family of 4 and there is 4 times more chicken, beans and corn and I don't feel ripped off. I'd like to think this was not a normal day at Shirley's, or the girl making the salad just didn't like much on her own salads and thought this is normal. I also purchased some Raspberry Cream cheese rolls that I took to a meeting. They were fresh and lovely. The food here is fresh. If you don't like chicken on the chicken salads, then you'll love this place.

The cinnamon, raspberry or orange rolls are amazing, but the service is horrible and ITS NOT a walk in bakery...you have to PRE ORDER. which is so annoying for those of us who have lives and aren't desperate housewives that plan everything a week in advanced. Good quality but suuper inconvenient and annoying if you want to have same day pick up of a dozen rolls.

Freaking awesome cinnamon rolls and cheesy bread sticks. I needed something fattening to make me feel better after running, and this place was on the way home. I got a cinnamon roll for $1.69 and two bread sticks for $.79 each. Those things are so good to take home and eat with soup. Love it. I only wish that it had more tables to give it the feel of a bakery where I can actually sit down and enjoy my pastry on a Saturday morning. There was just one lone table, which I thought seemed out of place - just one? Hmm. I'll definitely go back to try some more things, though I'll admit that i expect them to have a bit more of a variety. I didn't know if they'd have donuts (which they didn't), but most of the pastries are limited to various "rolls" and breads. But I'm not complaining too much - the cinnamon rolls satisfied my craving.
