Good restaurant but they make you pay to share a plate and that is why they got 4 stars.

My siblings and I and our spouces get together the second Saturday orf December every year, and have done for many years. We've never been disappointed in the excellent food and hospitality. Even with the changes in management and staff, they've always been friendly and remember our family. We've thought about going somewhere else, but it's always only a thought. I'm sure we'll keep coming back for more for a long time to come. Thanks to the staff at Prairie Schooner!

This place used to be wonderful, but over the last several years it has taken a turn downhill. The portion sizes went down, while the prices went up and the food is subpar. Definitely not my favorite place to eat anymore, in fact I'll probably never set foot in there again. :(

Soooo disappointed with this place. Me and my husband went here for our anniversary and have regretted it so much. The establishment is outdated even for a theme restaurant. We sat in a "wagon" and the cover had nasty stains all over it in the inside. The salad was soft and bland. Not crispy and fresh as it should be. The greens beans were too soft, no taste and lukewarm at best. The au gratin potatoes tasted like they had been made two days ago. Nasty. My ribeye was ok. But tasted like the cheap steaks I buy on sale. My husbands New York strip had no fat (tasteless). The waiter took forever to come. Took his time to bring us some honey for our bread, did not ask us if we wanted any refills. Horrible experience and the worst? It was wayyyy expensive. Feel so cheated. Will never be going there again.

Went here for lunch today for restaurant week and it was delicious. I'm only giving it 3 stars because part of my chicken was undercooked. My waitress didn't say 2 words to me after initially taking my order. And when the manager came over to check on my undercooked chicken, he was super rude.

Great food and loved the western setting. Yeah it was themed like a Disney attraction but it was a surprise find in Ogden Utah. Steak and service was excellent.

From out of town and our friends brought us here. Loved the atmosphere, ambiance, and decorating. We had great service, and the drinks were mixed well. Probably not somewhere you go to often if you are a local, but awesome to bring out-of-towners to and a destination for special occasions, for sure.

The ambiance is great. Covered wagons and stuffed dead animals makes you feel like you are really a pioneer dining on over-priced steak. The fried mushrooms are nice. The creamy horseradish sauce tastes like sour cream. The fact that they charge an extra 9.99 to share a dinner is pretty atrocious. The food is decent. Certainly not worth the premium prices.

Great fun! It's a steakhouse so I would suggest having steak. My 10oz prime rib was tender without much fat. My husband had a cheeseburger while my son had the Pioneer, a beaded turkey meal. My steak was by far the best. Good service and very neat atmosphere! Light in your schooner can be dimmed if you want...!

Prairie Schooner has taken such good care of my family this past weekend that I have to give a five star review. We planned a memorial for a family member and wanted to have a luncheon on a Sunday afternoon, needed a gluten free menu, and had to serve over 50 people. Even though Prairie Schooner doesn't usually open on Sundays for lunch, they opened up early to accommodate our memorial, and the waitresses were super friendly and acted happy to come in on their day off and take care of our family. The restaurant also went out of their way to design a special gluten free menu, even adding soup as an appetizer choice (they usually only offer salad with lunch) because one of our family members liked it so much. Despite the large group, the service was speedy. They were even able to quickly accommodate and serve a few late arrivals as well. Each guest was offered chicken, salmon, or steak. Everyone said their food was well cooked. I had the prairie chicken breast, and was surprised how moist and filling it was. All in all, I have to thank everyone at the restaurant for the hard work and planning they put into making our event run smoothly. If we ever need to book a family event again, this place will definitely be at the top of our list.

Great service! Good food! Awesome setting! The pot roast and mashed potatoes was really good! Full of flavor! I would go there again!

Straight up, this place was underwhelming. We went with hopes that it would be more than just kitsch but it fell flat. The food wasn't good enough to overcome mediocre service and corny ambiance. I had steak and my fiancé had fish. Neither were as good as what you would get at a cookie cutter chain restaurant. It's a shame, because it could be a fun place to bring visiting guests but it was bad enough we just wouldn't come back even for the gag of showing out-of-towners. Just not our cup of tea.

Prairie Schooner may be antique (intentionally) but the quality of food continues to deliver. Its definitely more of a $$$ than a $$, especially if you get an appetizer, a cocktail, wine or beer. Not great for kids in high chairs in the wagon seating, the table is on a higher level than the ground and the chair sits too far away from the wagon's table. Our server had no suggestion other than maybe hold the chair during the meal. Onto the menu. Not sure about the other reviewer, but the steaks, sides, and dessert (go for the cobbler) have always been very high quality and fresh. I do agree, fried mushrooms aren't that great, but I don't like mushrooms to begin with. But you can skip an app, they bring a nice warm loaf of bread, honey, and butter when seated. The salad that comes with dinner is a nice mix of greens, not just the iceberg blend variety. I usually get the steak and fried shrimp combo, with the au gratin potatoes on the side, and have never once been disappointed. The steak is cooked to order perfect, fried shrimp are large and tasty, and the potatoes are made from scratch. Its a good place for toddlers and up, especially with the western themed wagons surrounding a camp scene, but leave the infants at home IMHO.

Let me start off by saying that I NEVER write reviews but I use/value others reviews quite often. Because of my recent service or lack of, I felt like I should leave a review for this restaurant. We have been to the Prairie Schooner twice in the last couple of months. Both times, the place was not very busy with no wait to be seated. Awesome! So we thought... On both occasions we waited an hour for our food after placing our order. Don't get me wrong, the atmosphere is very good but sitting/starving in a covered wagon for an hour isn't my kind of fun. I get one, maybe two nights out a month with my wife for dinner and a movie and having to go get refunds for our movie tickets because of poor service kind of pissed me off. When the Manager finally brought out our food on our last visit, she started laughing and said "You ever heard the term Slippery Fish?" and then proceeded to say "That's what happened here. We had to re-cook your salmon. Sorry it took so long". Not once during the hour we waited did the waitress or manager come by to say "Sorry its taking so long" or "We dropped your food and are re-cooking it". While eating our mediocre meal the waitress was very good about re-filling our drinks. Thumbs up! When we finished, the waitress brought out our check and then POOF! She Disappeared! We waited another 15 minutes before finally having to go up to the front and say we WANTED to pay for our meal. The manager took our payment and told us to have a good rest of the night. No Discount, No Sincere Apology, just "Have a good rest of your night". Thumb down! Another Finger up! I would not recommend the Prairie Schooner to any of my friends or family. The service is slow and not very friendly. The food is mediocre at best. Even with a coupon, I don't think I will be going back.

Very disappointed and will not return again. The place was understaffed. We were there for 90 min before getting our main course. All four dinners were over cooked. Slowest service I have ever had at a restaurant

I ordered the New York steak, wasn't impressed. The beau ordered the country fried steak & gravy, I tried a bite and it was gritty, and he agreed that they used low quality meat. I mean I've tasted better country fried steak at Denny's! The sweet potato with cinnamon butter as a side was delightful. The buffalo chicken wings were on point, the breaded mushrooms were overly salty, and the onion rings were barely breaded making for the flimsiest onions rings I've ever had, didn't taste bad, just definitely different. We had the sampler so we tasted all three. The theme of the whole restaurant was of the wild west or, from my genre, the computer game Oregon Trail (loved that game back in the day)! With a bear and wolf prop in the middle of the dining area, it was actually cool and something I haven't seen before, every booth was like sitting in a wagon. Three stars is pushing it as far as food goes, the décor and service gave this place that extra star.

I had no idea what to expect when I walked in here with my brother, but with meat, potatoes, and some locally brewed beer, we definitely did not leave disappointed. This place has definite charm, and the service gets an easy A based on our experience. We were fortunate in that we went at a time when there was no rush so everything came out fast and exactly as we expected. There is a variety of choices on the menu, but we decided to start with the fried mushrooms as an appetizer to start. WOW! Perfectly crisp without much leftover grease...absolutely divine. The steaks are priced very reasonably for what you get, and coming from the East Coast, I felt like I walked in there with Monopoly money! I got the mushrooms and au gratin potatoes as a side, and five bites into, I was already full! If you're not a fan of dead flesh on your plate, please don't bother showing up here: this place is all about the meat! Despite the "unique" ambiance of this place, the food is supreme. It was a rather memorable meal and my brother and I really enjoyed the experience. I would definitely go back to this place if given the chance. I would highly recommend the Prairie Schooner!

Still being on the 'we'll try most restaurants in Ogden once (twice if we like it)' theme we headed here for our Big Friday Night Out last week. I'd never even heard of this place so walking in to covered wagon booths was a blast. Of course, we had the fried mushrooms after reading all of the other reviews and they did not disappoint!! Yummy fried mushroom deliciousness! Dipped in the rich, creamy homemade garlic ranch - heaven. The steaks were very nice and cooked to order perfectly. The staff were all really nice. Kudos to the bartender - even with the slightly backward liquor laws here I could still taste the peach schnapps in my cocktail. The lost star is because of the price. For the mushrooms, 2 steaks and 2 drinks it cost us close to $90! A very expensive Big Friday Night Out for Ogden! We would go there again - but only for a special occasion or to take someone from out of town for the trippy decor.

Took wife out for date night. Friday night at 6:00 and was not crowded yet. It is nice since you are kind of secluded in your own covered wagon table. Wife got the prime rib and I got the schooner combo ( 8 oz. bacon wrapped filet and 3 large prawns). The waitress was extremely nice and helpful. The clam chowder has some ingredient in it that smelled strange but tasted fairly good. The prawns were good and the filet was cooked right with good flavoring. The wife said the prime lacked seasoning, kind of bland but cooked well. She also got the baked potato with the works and said it was the best she ever had. Price was not horrible, a little high but most steak houses are. Some say they do not like the ambience but I found it rather cool. We will go again after trying a couple other steak houses to compare.

There weren't many people dining there on Sunday. I went with my 3 yr old and she enjoyed the ambience. The gouda soup was really good. I had the chopped steak but I ordered the country fried steak. The fries were overly salted but the service was great, everyone was really nice.

Prairie Schooner can be summed up in three words: bland and canned. The dark, timeworn 70's era museum diorama has novelty value if only for taking things to a whole new level of cheesiness. The food though? Unforgivably mediocre, especially at these prices. Take the prime rib for example; a cut of meat that should be hearty and full of flavor. Here? Lifeless. Flavorless. Even spam is more interesting. The steak was only marginally better. The soup and sides tasted like they came out of packet -- or, more likely, a 50 lb bag. And the deep fried mushroom appetizer? Sure, the texture is interesting, but the taste is all grease and batter. Not recommended.

  • David B.

Impressed! Never been to a place quite like Prairie Schooner. I'd recommend anyone to come here on the environment alone. Its just fun and unique to have dinner in your own covered wagon! Lighting is dim and they have fun decorations all around. I ended up trying the deep fried mushrooms and the cowgirl (bacon wrapped steak), both were extremely decadent!! Service was oustanding!

  • Niki W.

The service was WONDERFUL, loved our waitress Jamee. Steaks were nicely seasoned and the mushrooms were really good. The French onion soup was awful!! We both had the ribeye steaks and they were pretty good, nicely cooked. But everything else was just good, not great... And for the expense, great would have made the bill much easier to pay :)

First visit was in 1987 and my recollection was that it was fantastic.....now it is good. Great ambiance great service.....the appetizer sampler platter is good but full of mormon stodge in the form of bloated onion rings etc. Steaks & Prime Rib were good but it is as obvious as dogs-balls that the quality of meat is that of "supermarket" vice anything kicked up. Prices are steep much as they are at Timber Mine and RubyRiver. I am sick and tired of paying near "Chop House" prices for super market meat!! The 3 stars is generous..........I may or may not ever be back, but I encourage others to give PS a try.

Steaks were fine, but the mashed potatoes were made from a box. House salad was pre-made iceberg lettuce with two beet slices. I ordered the "oscar" with my ribeye - lump crab meat w/ hollandaise sauce. Don't know what I was thinking... must have been the altitude. Price was ehh for what we got. Fair value. Two steak entrees w/ two soft drinks came out to about $75. Saving graces are the ambiance/atmosphere and service. The inside of this warehouse building is made out to look like covered wagons encircling a campfire a la Oregon Trail. It was goofy, but endearing. Our waitress was hyper-attentive and super friendly. Hostess was personable. There are probably better steakhouses in the Ogden area, but they can't match Prairie Schooner's "authenticity".... I was pretty amped up to watch True Grit when we got back to the hotel.

The best fried mushrooms I have ever had. they were battered and seasoned well. Not overly greasy. (hey they are fried - there is some grease!) I had the schooner combo which was 3 jumbo shrimp and a filet. My steak was done perfectly& my shrimp were not overdone. The prices were reasonable. This is definitely a beef lovers paradise. Our service was great. We didn't have to ask for anything twice. Our drinks were consistently refilled without asking. Excellent! The atmosphere was awesome. It was an old west / lodge theme. You get to sit in individual covered wagons overlooking a campfire and animals (taxidermy central) and vegetation. Can't wait to go back.

As a vegetarian, I'm pretty much jacked for tasty menu options at Prairie Schooner. It provides great ambience and happens to be one of my girls' favorites, so I muster (cocktail menu helps!). Deep fried mushrooms are yummy, and you can't go wrong with ANY of the potato options - sweet, baked, or au gratin. Did I mention the staff is probably some of the very best in the state? Accommodating and just ridiculously perfect with kiddos.

unique dining experience in a prarie wagon in the middle of the wild west; i really felt like i was at a western themed dining establishment at disney world and not in a restaurant in utah. a+ for atmosphere if you like kitsch! food, on the other hand, is a mixed bag. the crawfish bisque was extremely salty. the pan fried walleye fish was heavenly good. bread pudding was a huge disappointment. it was incredibly dry and bland. i had the chicken (which had a crapload of peas surrounding the chicken) a few years ago and i was bewildered that i was being punished for not ordering a beef based dish. ah, well. i should get a steak the next time i'm here!

Excellent place. You will consume a good deal of fat however! We had the fried mushrooms as an app, and they were great. I had the salmon and it was excellent. The tables are like covered wagons which is really cool unless you are claustrophobic, and they do prevent the waitstaff from clearing the table between courses - you have to pass the dishes up to them. Overall excellent place!

    (4)
  • Nom D.

Silly covered wagon theme will amuse your children. Some pre-fab food, some made to order. I'll go elsewhere and let the tourists enjoy the "campfire" decor.

A coworker of ours recommended us to check this place out since it is our first time in Ogden. Three of us come in for dinner on a week night. The place was packed. We've waited 20 minutes to get seated. The decor is very "mid west", there are animals(not alive lol) everywhere. every booth is inside its own covered wagon! that is really cool right? The waitress was really nice, she was really busy, but attentive. We've ordered the SCHOONER COMBO, it comes with Three Colossal Shrimp & 6oz Filet Mignon, Also we ordered the Pork Chop, all entrees comes with a side of choice(potato), a side of steam veggie, and soup or salad. They also serve freshly baked bread, It was ok until we tried it with the honey that served on the table. It was delicious! we had 2 loaf of bread (even though none of us were hungry, and one of us were on the gluten free diet) . when the food came, we all had salad, it was fresh mixed greens --- very refreshing. the filet mignon was cooked to perfection. the shrimp is Hugh and yummy, the pork chop was dry, but the waitress was very apologetic, and swap the pork chop with the chicken breast which was delicious! Overall everything is great! the food, the service, the decor, definitely an experience. highly recommended!!!

I love it here. The best steaks you'll find in Ogden, a great wine selection, and most importantly, a staff and owners that really care about making you happy. Mary just rocks. The ambience is also truly unique. Tables are covered wagons, lighting is campire-like, and there are plenty of wild west relics and preserved animals. Not the most comfortable environment for vegetarians. (There is also a dining area with "normal" tables for groups.) The parking lot is huge, and while it's always busy, it's never overly crowded.

  • Brian P.

The interior of this place is crazy awesome. Fake campfires, fake animals, and fake pioneers surround your table. The only thing missing is animatronics. It's a little cheezy, but still awesome. Each table is a covered wagon. The Schooner is all about meat and potatoes. Lots of both. I had the prime rib. Crazy delicious. A full bar also helped, with reasonably priced drinks. As with most Utah establishments, the service was extremely friendly. Utah people are freakishly nice.

One of most unique restaurants I have ever been to, and a total slice of the local culture, this place has solid chops and potatoes surrounded by taxidermied animals, and reenactments involving Native Americans. This is something truly not to be missed.

Let me start off by saying that I am prime rib kind of guy. If I go to a new restaurant and see prime rib on the menu I'm ready to order. Give me prime rib and give it to me rare. This place absolutely has the best prime rib I have ever eaten. The atmosphere is great and you can sit in what looks like little schooner wagons. Highly, highly recommended.

We went for a birthday. There were very few tables occupied but they had a "big" party upstairs, 25 people. Our experience took over 2 hours for a very poor meal. My food was greasy and the gravy tasted like uncooked flour or maybe a packet from the local supermarket. It had limp undercooked bacon making it inedible. The fried mushrooms were good. The creamy vegetable soup was like Velveeta cheese with fried vegetables added. I had a bad meal here 5 years ago and swore I would not go back. Should have listened to myself. There are so many better choices locally.

Silly covered wagon theme will amuse your children. Some pre-fab food, some made to order. I'll go elsewhere and let the tourists enjoy the "campfire" decor.

An Ogden institution. The atmosphere is unbeatable, though some may find it a bit over the top.
