Ok. Lived in Japan from 1984-1986. Worked as a Japanese language tour guide for a local company from 1990-1992. There was this tour we did that started here, went to Moab, Monument Valley, Powell, Bryce, Zion then Vegas. TMI for this review but suffice it to say the first day of the tour, lunch was a bento at Dead Horse Point State Park. If you don't know what a "bento" is, you have no business reading this article, much less considering this establishment as a place to dine. I don't remember when I picked up these bentos. Could have been the morning of our departure but I'm thinking it was the day before. Whatever. I was there picking up bentos for my group prior to our departure, waiting in the restaurant for them to bring them up front when out of the corner of my eye I saw the biggest cockroach (gokkaburi) I have seen outside of Japan. It was sauntering up the wall of the dining room like it didn't have a care in the world. Yeah, me too. Gokkaburi seem to do well in a warm, humid environment. I lived in Matsusaka for a few months and the cockroaches loved to hang out on our dirty dishes in the sink just inside the door to our apartment. One night I opened the door, turned on the light and, as usual, startled the filthy bugs in the kitchen sink just inside the doorway. One particularly large gokkaburi flung himself in a fit of panic out of the sink and onto the walkway outside of our door. He scurried in circles, searching for shelter, finding none. I took a shoe from the genkan, timed my motion to his ceaseless, frantic circling and squashed him like the bug he was. The sound emitting from my shoe forcing his gooey insides through his rigid exoskeleton sounded like a large firecracker. I shan't forget that sound any time soon. For whatever reason, we ended up using someone else for the bentos. It had nothing to do with what I saw that morning. I will say the bentos at Suehiro were, by a magnitude of "a lot," far superior to any of the other bentos we were provided by all purveyors, before or after. MOREOVER, that place is still in operation. I'm talking 1989-1991 people. I'm suprised I'm still around, let alone some Japanese restaurant in a strip mall in the heart of Midvale!

I always get their beef teriyaki dinner which comes with miso soup, salad with poppy seed dressing and mandarin oranges, tempura carrots, zucchini and onions, and rice. Yum. My husband likes their dinner boxes which come with sushi rolls, tuna and gyoza and chicken teriyaki. They have a big sushi bar with TVs. The decor is plain but nice. I like their fish tank. Service is okay.

This is my favorite local sushi place, but not the best I've ever had, hence 4 stars. The service is always friendly and great, I've never had any issues custom ordering anything from the sushi bar or off the menu. They have a larger vegetarian selection than most places and the quality is higher than the competition. Their veggie veggie roll is amazing, as is their veggie tempura roll! They will accommodate for vegetarians by not adding fish flakes to certain dishes, etc.

Great sushi roll selection, food always tastes so fresh and well prepared. Friendly staff that is always on the ball. Today is the last day the owner is there, he just recently sold it.

Mixed reviews here. Place is meh. Inside is a small sushi bar. I had the $18 dinner box that came with soup and salad. The steak was tender. Sushi was ok. chicken katsu was really good, fried perfectly. Service was ok. Everything was ok nothing memorable.

Yeah, it's strip mall sushi in Utah, but you know what? It's pretty good. The sashimi is fresh and tastes clean, the bento box my son ordered was yummy, and if you aren't a fish person, they have lots of other items on the menu (we particularly recommend the noodle dishes...yum!). I'd definitely return.

Decided to give this little spot a try and we weren't disappointed. The Gyoza was delicious. My husband had the Teriyaki chicken and I had the steak. The steak was listed as tenderloin in the menu, however it was a bit tough, but the taste was pleasant. The tempura veggies were nothing short of delish. This was our first visit and I am sure we'll be back.

Food is good. Specially their Agedashi Tofu is best! Love eating that when outside is cold. Speaking of cold, Nabeyaki is great too! Price? It's not bad, it's not cheap by any means, but volume it comes with the meal equal out the price.

This place really is bad. EVERY roll has tempura in it, or cream cheese or some sort of heavy mayo. I had to do some hardcore sifting to find a fresh roll. But the best part was walking in and seeing the fish tank to the right that was literally so dirty you couldn't see through the glass. Lol, if that fish tank represents how their fish in the back is treated I may have to get checked for tetanus and rubella. The service was weak too. I was on my lunch break at work and it took 30 minutes for my food? 10 minutes for a waitress to stop by? I mean...I try not to be too picky about service considering this was my first time there and it may have just been a rough day or whatever, but this plain old sucked. I would never recommend this place, nor will I be going back. I don't know where these five star ratings are coming from honestly, I feel like I wouldn't be able to trust their opinion after experiencing this slosh pit. Oh, and for what it was...way overpriced.

I've been here many times both under the old management and new. The quality is a lot better now, the server was nice and kept our drinks filled up. The owner is very nice and always smiling. Growing up in Arizona most sushi places are in strip malls so don't think the foods no good because of the location the food is wonderful!!! The tempura shrimp is always yummy not to oily and cooked just right, and there fish has always been fresh and of the best quality. I recommend this place to any one thinking of trying sushi for the first time and others that just want a great sushi and Japanese restaurant.

I've been dining here since its opening. Having lived in Japan (like many others) I believe the food here to be very authentic. I can't vouch for the sushi much but the sukiyaki and teriyaki are amazing. Miso is fresh and the rice is delicious. (Yeah I said rice) Many of my Japanese friends dine here with their families and always will. Japanese food is more than sushi so if you want to try what they eat there, you won't be disappointed. Dining at lunch will save you $

I love this place. If you don't know it's there, it's easy to miss. I'm wish I would have found it sooner. Their selection of rolls is awesome, quality is fantastic and the service is great. Definitely give it a try, you won't be dissapointed.

Suehiro was my favorite sushi joint. They had a $20 roll called the Confidential that was what converted me to being a sushi fan. But the last time I went they were under new ownership with a new chef. The Confidential still exists, but it's now $13 and has been stripped down to nothing special. Now Suehiro is just another sushi restaurant among many. It's not bad, it's just not what it was before.

Good, but not great. Suehiro is fairly Americanized Japanese food. Their prices are among the highest, but their quality is middle-of-the-road at best. If you didn't plan ahead and make reservations at Kyoto, then Suehiro will do the trick. The sushi is good, as are the teriyaki and tempura, but you can do a lot better in the Salt Lake Valley.

This place used to be good but since they changed ownership it's just not quite the same.

I had to update may rating since last going there. I'm not sure if it was just a bad day but the sushi isn't as good as it once was. The two sushi chefs I was used to weren't there and there were two guys I had never seen before. I got the Sushi special like usual and while it all tasted good the sushi that came with it was tiny. Instead of a nice mouth filling piece of Nigiri I got tiny little sushi I can only describe as cute; or cute if I didn't have to may so much for them. I had heard that they were changing ownership and I'm not sure if that affected it or if it was the economy in general and they have to cut back but I was a bit disappointed by smaller lunch. While this place used to have good sushi at a good price it's now in the range of good sushi but I feel I'm paying more than other places offer.

NOTE BEFORE YOU READ this is someone who rarely, if ever eats sushi. I was surprised after reading previous reviews of this place that it was not really exciting rolls, BUT I am sort of new to the sushi game. I was willing to try everything that seemed a little off to me like eel and crab and mussel shooters, and I thought they were real good. Lots of different textures and flavors. I felt though that after eating a new roll that previous rolls became flavorless (if that makes sense). I highly suggest the Blue Crystal roll (I think its called that, had Crystal in the name) and the Blue Heat roll. I thought that the sushi chefs were really cool and entertaining to talk to while sitting at the bar eating. They also gave a lot of great suggestions on what to get based on what I thought I might like. They even made some custom rolls (I have no idea if this is standard or not) that were ridiculously perfect in taste and texture. I recommend this place to anyone who is new to sushi but wants something a little different when it comes to food.

We decided to give this place a try on the recommendation of an acquaintance. We were told it was an underappreciated gem of a Japanese restaurant, despite it's strip mall location. Well, after trying a combined five rolls, we can't agree with our friend's generous review. The location didn't bother me at all, nor did the decor. The wait however was very long, considering there were about 5 other people in the place. The rolls were chewy and we thought they all tasted the same. The ginger was a little dry and flavorless. It just didn't do it for us. I'll add that the servers were nice and attentive, so I'll give them five stars. But a good server doth not a good restaurant make, so the two stars stand.

I was going through sushi-withdrawals when I tried this place out.... so I was extremely happy to be there. My main concern when visiting a new sushi place is how creative the specialty rolls are. I love trying interesting ingredient combinations. The rolls at Suehiro were not very exciting. My roommate and I sat at the sushi bar, so I ended up asking the chef to make up a new roll with some of my favorite things: salmon, jalapeno, lemon and shrimp. It turned out pretty good! Anyways, the nigiri was fairly fresh. My roommate got the sweet shrimp nigiri that came complete with tempura-fried shrimp heads... I ended up sketching out when he offered one to me (I was not impressed with myself.) Definitely try it out if you're curious... it's decent! However, I am still on a mission to find my favorite sushi place in Salt Lake City.

There's room for all kinds of Japanese food in this valley. From the painstakingly thought-out and meticulously-prepared, to the more everyday kind of meal. The same goes for burgers. The same goes for pizza. And so on. What we have here is probably much closer to the latter--an easy, come-as-you-are kind of Japanese restaurant with a wide appeal for sushi and broad stroke menu. That's great. There's room for it, and if you know that going in ahead of time, you're not going to be disappointed. The dining room is much bigger than you think. It could use a refresh, but a hot, sexy atmosphere isn't exactly what they're going for. It matches their approach. Choose from a decent sized selection of sushi rolls and several kitchen dishes. There's nothing to exotic, but it's all accessible. I went with one of the most uncommonly served dishes in a tekka don. This rice bowl is served with several thinly sliced pieces of tuna on top of rice, and a little bit of sauce. Unless you've had a donburi, it's a little hard to describe, but they have a few varieties on the menu to try. Our service was super sweet. Kind folks who were happy to serve us even though we got there with less than 30 minutes to go before closing time. I think Suehiro is one of those places that does great with the neighbors, where they may not be making a special trip to come in, but just having it nearby and using it as an option is probably not a bad idea.

I used to come here when they still had an original owner, but when i went back last week, I was so disappointed. Service was "okay", but one of the Japanese waitress had her long hair not tied or anything, and serving foods made me little uncomfortable. I had Bento and Calamari appetizer, but they were both sad looking, and sad taste :( I think this was the last visit unless they will have a major change.

I like my sushi no doubt about it. I don't particularly like Suehiro's though. That is all that keeps it from getting five stars from me. Yes it is in a strip mall. But that means parking is plentiful and close. SO quit whining. Decor and surroundings me little to me. Food triumphs over all. I've been eating at Suehiro for over 15 years now. During that time I have probably eaten everything on the menu at least once. The bento boxes at lunch are pretty popular, but I much prefer supper. I will just focus on the things they do better than everyone else. The sukiyaki is old school. It is just like when I was a kid watching my old mad polish it off. It is served in that same type of metal pot. The tempura is light, crisp, and plentiful. The teriyakis are all good, especially the beef which is always perfectly grilled. While it is not the best I have ever had, (the best was made up by old man Ryujin at the old Dai Enko Tei back in the 70's), it is good enough for me to come back for a couple of decades. Who am I kidding.......it's sublime! One of the best steaks I ever had is theirs. The rest of the entrees are pretty routine. Avoid the eel. Don't skip the agedash tofu appetizer. This is a dish that I very much love. Nobody comes close to Suehiro's. And they don't skimp on the bonito shavings either! The rest of the appetizers are pretty standard though. The seared ahi ain't too shabby, but there are lots of places that do it right. If they are serving up ginger ice cream then get it. Otherwise get dessert somewhere else. Service is uniformly good. Casual, but attentive. If you see a couple of 6;5" 280 pounders in there, it's me and my brother. He's the one with rosy cheeks from the sake.

I have been a regular customer eating lunch there one or two times a week for several years. The last time I went in for lunch on February 15, 2012 the service and food was terrible. I would give them a pass but the last few months the place had been a dissapointment. I looks like there have been a lot of turn over in help over the past few months. Sorry to say but I won't be going back.

Pretty good Japanese restaurant, but the tempera is pretty greasy. The Tara Koreaga appetizer is wonderful.

Um, yum. I was first introduced to this place by my editor who gets together with his ski buddies at the sushi bar at least once a week. Because of that, my first experience at this place was one of the best that can be had as I was up front and center with the sushi chefs who all knew the head of the party and were willing to roll up some off-the-menu chef favorites. Awe-some. One of my favorites here, which I've never seen elsewhere, is a oyster and quail egg yolk (both served raw) served together in the oyster shell. Slurp that sucker up because it is delicious! Everything I got here was seriously amazing. I hear that it is under new ownership, so I am hoping that the experience is the same as before.

Awesome sushi! Came here while on business and loved it. Snow White roll was especially good if you like jalapeños on your sushi. Chef also made a roll I wanted that was not on the menu. Staff was friendly & service was quick.

I liked this place before....and now it's even better! Under new ownership they now source their fish at a much higher quality and the prices remain the same. They always have great lunch specials - although I personally tend to stick with ordering nigiri and specialty rolls as a rule. The location is great for either lunch or dinner. I think this will become a regular place for me as the sushi is on par with any other place I've been locally. The staff is friendly and atmosphere authentic.

Sushi ... oh how I love you. We came, we saw, we ate! And sushi in a strip mall? I have yet to meet a strip mall sushi I did not like. A girlfriend of mine and I made a sushi date for a Saturday. There were some crazy storms that weekend and we passed 4 sushi joints where there was no power before we found this place. I do not know if they were busier than normal because of the other outages, but they were a tad slow. There was only one guy making the sushi and it looked like 2 in the kitchen. The service was fine, our server apologized for the wait and kept our water glasses full. We ordered a few rolls from the 50% off menu. Everything we tried was good. Nice sized, nice variety, nice value. If the wait had not been so long I would have rated them a 4 star. They have traditional rolls you will find anywhere, and then they had some rolls I had never seen before. I liked the variety to choose from. As to the hot menu, we did not partake but everything looked yummy as it passed our table. The restaurant is pretty clean ... I did take exception to the restrooms. The floor was rather sticky that Saturday. That also will lose a place a star in my mind. These guys are not going to be a standard sushi joint, but I will consider them again when my go-to place has no power again!

Love the Baja Sushi here. This one has a tropical taste with lime and chile. Decorations are very standard for a Japanese restaurant. The set meal or the bento here are great and pricing is also very good for the amount food you get.

Pretty good. There were some non-traditional cool sushi rolls. The dinner combo was pretty good.

This place is all about the atmosphere and variety of super-special dishes. When I go, I typically grab the big sashimi plate, some miso, the unbeatable happy vegas roll with crab, salmon, cream cheese, avocado, tempura fried and with sweet sauce, some edamame, a pot of green tea (which is served with nori in it, extremely delicious), and one of the other specialty rolls of the day/week. Not much else to say except it was recommended to us by authentic Japanese folks and I can see why.

I wanted to like this place. It is near the office, and the food is decent for the price. The service, however, destroyed the entire experience. Are they understaffed? Perhaps, but that does not excuse rude, unfriendly behavior on the part of the server. First, she messed up the order. OK, that happens, people are human. When we asked for the original order, the server without a smile insisted that we should have to pay for the food she brought even though she was the one who brought the wrong item. All of our entree's were brought at different times, and then when the third one was a half hour later and we said we were leaving, the same server threw it in front of us and said she was leaving it on the table whether we wanted it or not. I don't think I have ever been treated that badly as a customer in a restaurant. The server, a young Asian girl, obviously does not understand the concept of customer service. Being very busy is not an excuse.

I would say 3.5 stars. Not the best Japanese, but probably the best Japanese you'll find in SLC. I would recommend going here after a long day of shredding pow at Brighton... which was exactly what I did.
