Moon Dog’s Cafe Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

The critiques on this place are fairly valid as when we went back in February, the waiter had transitioned her ordering process to an iPad and it took her some time to understand the process. She was also the only one working, but it was Valentine's Day. The food was amazing! I loved the sauces. The waitress was forgetful, but she sincerely apologized and given the day and staffing, I have worked too many jobs where call-outs make the job even tougher. Definitely make sure to get there on a meat night or if you go... go for the meat as it was so darn good. I had been wanting some good meat and my cravings were satisfied. If you don't like meat, don't go here, but if you do... GO! I would also address the comments about it being a "biker" type crowd and that may be true, but as "city folks" we weren't treated any differently and we enjoyed the diner type atmosphere.

Meh. We went here for dinner and were seated quickly. Mostly because the place was a ghost town. The atmosphere said 'biker bar' but the menu said 'here's absolutely everything that our cook knows how to make'. After perusing the tome that was the menu, I selected a sandwich. I figured that if a restaurant was going to charge $8 for a sandwich, it was going to be an amazing sandwich. Plus, it came with home made potato chips. The sandwich was ok, but not $8 ok. The home made potato chips looked awesome. Fried to a crispy golden brown, they were beautiful to look at. Then I took a bite of one. I don't know how, but it was completely lacking flavor. Any flavor. At all. No amount of salt could redeem these chips. Boo. This place has potential. I think they need to take about 1/2 of the items off the menu and then perfect those remaining items. The money saved from a smaller inventory should then be used to lower menu prices.

Moon Dog's has good food but the service is POOR and you don't get what you order. This was suppose to be home style potatoes which was confirmed when ordered. As you can see, they are hash browns. If you order to go, make sure your order is correct and you have it all before you leave. The scone was not received

Stopped in on a fluke Monday night for the first time. Had the ultimate moon dog platter.. portion control isn't the name for fantastic Smoked BBQ platter. Told to come back on a Tuesday for the $1.75 ribs. Stopped back in today for ribs. One of the best places for Smoked meat. BBQ sauce on the table. (Add a little or smothered for face presence.) Real potato French fries. Fresh cut, & lightly seasoned in the kitchen. Be ready to take home the Doggie box. Next time it's take out so I can pig out in my pajamas and passout from food coma.

First off service is terrible. The place is ran by high school girls which is fine if they knew how to run a restaurant floor. But they dont. The food itself is fair. We all had the burgers and they are good but the chips weren't all that great. Mine were burnt. The beans that they serve with each meal are ketchupy and missing that good smokey flavor.

This place rocks ! the service was outstanding. the owner made suggestions for menu items my husband had a burger with Tri tip on it. He was happy. Myself I had the chicken dinner. After ordering the owner came and asked if I would like mashed or baked my answer, are the mashed real the response was I don't use any thing fake. Even the salad that came with the dinner had Spring mix not iceberg. And the gravy was another plus in my book, not lumpy but very tasty. Portions are very generous. who cares the the menus are on paper and photo copied. This means that they put more effort in to food preparation. I am writing as a former chef. Whenever we come back to Hill Air Base this will always be one of our favorite spots.

I've eaten here twice now and won't again. The staff is nice but the food is mediocre. Their menu is a cheaper version of Denny's. This place is like a biker bar that decided to serve food. I love BBQ and was prepared to fully embrace another BBQ joint in Layton, instead I left disappointed.

We were in town visiting family and had a fantastic lunch here. This area is really lacking in good eating spots, but we had a thoroughly enjoyable meal here. Food was great, they have a fun and unique menu, and GREAT service! ...And great lattes!

If you want breakfast and your only a few blocks from Sills......... No brainier this is not the place to eat. My wife liked the atmosphere because at Sills she feels like there are hundreds of people watching and waiting for our seats. Same type of breakfast as Sills but the Moon Dog has a less for more philosophy so bring extra cash.

If you love home cooking or BBQ, you will love this combination of both!! The menu is entertaining to read, the staff is friendly and attentive, the owner is down to earth and aims to please and does it because he loves it, the food is DELICIOUS...I can't say enough good things about Moon Dogs! My husband and I ordered the pulled pork and briskett platters so we could try both. They came with sides of coleslaw, beans, and I got the mashed potatoes while my husband ordered the fries. The salad before the meal came was light and fresh, great flavor...I had no room to even try the slaw or beans. We left full and happy! Their own BBQ sauce is one of the best I've ever tasted and their menu has plenty to choose from, so everyone in your family will find something to love. Kid's menu is perfect that kids are into more typical kid's food, prices overall for lunch/dinner are priced from $7 to $18 for their Ultimate Platter!! Prices for everyone. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Looking forward to trying breakfast there next!

I had heard such great reviews about the breakfast here but I was so unimpressed!! The homestyle potatoes were awful! Soggy, no spice, no crisp. The scone was fine - nothing to write home about. My son got the pulled pork platter & it was fine but the baked beans & Cole slaw were terrible. I was prepared for not good service but we ours was good. She was attentive & quick (although it wasn't crowded). Will not be my go-to diner.

A sign on the door says there's an opening for a cook, and boy is there! I usually like this biker themed place with big, delicious scones and lots of other yummy stuff your doctor advises you not to eat too often. Sadly, breakfast this past Sunday was totally underwhelming. The order was wrong, it came out in fits and spurts, the food was badly undercooked and fairly tasteless, and our waitress - though friendly - was clearly in the weeds, forgetting not just who had which toast, but to bring the toast altogether. This place has been good in the past, and I hope will be good again. It needs a good cook and some whipping into shape to achieve that, though. Let's hope that happens soon.

I had this catered for a party a few years ago and it was excellent, but I never went to the actual restaurant. It's a nice place, though could use some cleaning up. Food was good. The French fries we received were not fully cooked, and their so called "spicy" bbq sauce was about as spicy as a piece of bread. Overall it's good, affordable food.

Great food!!! I loved the chili verde omelet, and I had cottage cheese and tomatoes instead of fries... and it made for a delicious healthier meal!! My husband had the pulled chicken, and it was also delicious!!! Their bbq beans are the best!!

I'm so bummed; I wanted to like this place. I came in at around 7 pm to grab some dinner to-go. It was server Kailey's first day (matter of fact, I think I was her first customer). She was very sweet and eager. I ordered the calamari appetizer and a side of french fries. My food took quite a while, considering I only saw two other parties in the restaurant while I was there. Once it was all boxed up, Kailey went to process my bill. Her trainer, a young woman whose name I didn't catch, was trying her best to run the restaurant floor while also training a new server. I noticed the owner "Moon Dog" was sitting at a table... not helping. The training server never made eye contact with me and lacked some very basic customer service skills. Another big problem I had with MDC was the fact that Kailey's photocopy of her drivers license and social security card were sitting right out on the bar. A BIG no-no on the part of management. Shame on you. And I haven't even gotten to the food part yet... ick. All of this would have been forgiven, had the food been good. Unfortunately, the calamari was chewy and overdone, greasy, definitely not fresh, tasting like it had been frozen then thawed then deep fried, and practically marinated in either lemon juice or lemon herb seasoning - maybe both. I would've liked the option of choosing for myself whether or not I wanted my calamari soaked in lemon juice. The fries had potential to be okay, but had clearly been fried in overused, not-hot-enough oil, as they were stained brown and black and way too greasy. I won't come here again. The only reason I didn't give only one star was because server Kailey was attentive and clearly trying her best. I hope she finds a better place to work.

We ordered the chili Verde omelet, very yummy, with homefries, very terrible. And we got the brisket omelet with homefries, again terrible. We had a few issues with the service. Our waitress kept forgetting to bring us the food we ordered. It took three tries to get all our food. The homefries were sliced, unseasoned potatoes, didn't even have salt on them out onions to add flavor. Ultra bland and boring. We won't order the homefries again. But the omelet was good enough to return for. Two stars for service and yucky potatoes, four stars for the omelets, so averaging 3 stars.

  • Ashley M.

I worked here. The food isn't anything special, and as far as service goes; the waitresses and cooks get treated terrible by the owner, Steve, so if your waitress acts like she doesn't care and she doesn't want to be there, chances are he called her some degrading name and yelled at her before you came in. Go to another restaurant please. And for the love of all things Holy, don't ever apply for a job here.

Moon Dog's has a character and specific charm I have yet to find anywhere else. Great food, great prices, great service, and great times. Sounds cheesy, but it's absolutely true. Definitely a new favorite, and one to recommend to all.

Yet another on-the-verge-of-something-great restaurants! We Yelped this place while working in Layton. It was close, and we hadn't had breakfast or lunch so we were hungry. The bf and I both ordered omelets, he the brisket, and I the shredded pork. I was delighted to see that they offered 1/2 sized portions on the omelets for a reduced price, since I tend to be a smaller eater. I ordered the 1/2 portion of my omelet and we both requested our hashbrowns be cooked extra crispy. Our waitress plugged it all in to her futuristic electronic menu pad and our food arrived in a somewhat timely manner after (I figured it took longer to get the hash browns extra crispy). Not so much. About 15% were crispy and the rest... Not at all. My omelet wasn't the half portion I ordered, neither were we charged for half. My omelet was watery on the inside due either to the pork or the plethora of barely cooked peppers. I wanted there to be more cheese... Desperately. The clear winner of both of our meals was the meat. Both the pork and the brisket were tasty. With a few little tweaks this place could be awesome.

We have been coming here for the last few years, and thought I would write a review. Usually we come for breakfast on Sunday, which is excellent. Tonight it was Nachos! Now I like my nachos, but these are made on a bed of fresh made potato chips! Irish nachos they're called in some places. Fantastic pulled pork on top and some tangy banana peppers to compliment. On Friday nights they have a little bit of live music and it just adds to the experience.

My first time here I came for takeout and spent $50 I was hungry at the time but found it was well worth it. I have gone back a couple of times since then and they never seem to disappoint. if you're ever in the area please is this place a chance

Used to like this place and wanted to keep liking it. Last 3-4 trips have been terrible. Chef/owner throwing things in the kitchen, sub par food, a terrible iPad system for ordering, and an owner that treats his employees like garbage. Go to Sill's, much better food and worth the wait.

    (2)
  • Clint W.

Nothing but meh... The food tastes bad and the staff isn't too friendly. I wouldn't be surprised if they go out of business soon.

We can't even comment on the food because we waited for over 30 minutes and never saw it. We sat at the bar and watched the disorganization and confusion from the kitchen and the servers. It was like a bad movie that wouldn't end. Coffee was weak but probably due to them being out of the right size filters and arguing over if they should use them or not. Painful. Don't waste your time.

Who knew?!? This place has the best breakfast in town! Took the family and everyone loved it. Eggs, hash browns or home fried potatoes, omelettes, French toast, and amazing scones. The service was friendly and prompt. We are coming back for Tuesday night rib night where kids eat free.

Very good homemade chips and fries, great burgers from (I assume) scratch. Delicious sauces, fast service, reasonable prices.

Omg. Talk about a food coma! I love this place. Granted, I've never had anything other than a BBQ sandwich, but I can't resist one long enough to order anything else. Good service. Quick to get our order out. Always thoroughly satisfied.

Always a favorite. We live in Saint George and try and make the trek here every chance we get. The service is on point, every single time and it's always great to see moon dog back in the kitchen creating his magic. Let's not forget their homemade potato chips.. To freaking die for!!

Came for lunch, ok fare. Breakfast served all day with hearty portions (friends got omlets). Had the brisket sandwich. Personally think the coleslaw and bannana peppers were a bit too overpowering on the meat. Alone, the meat was tender, but lacked the fullness of flavor that smoked brisket should have. Home made potato chips were good, but greasy and a little too crispy IMO. A heavy meal - no getting around that. Wouldn't come back on my own, but wouldn't mind eating again if someone decided this was the lunch spot.

1 star because we got a coupon from online that we paid for same day went and they would not honor it. Even though they had to join the site to put the deal on. It's a poor way to get business if your not going to honor it. I will not go to a place that does business like that.

Smoked Prime Rib on Friday Night! Delicious. Tender. Cooked perfectly! I also ordered their homemade potato chips. Holy Cow!! Beyond delicious. The restaurant was spotless, the staff were exceptionally friendly. They immediately made me feel comfortable, like I was a long time friend. The cook even made the rounds to make sure the customers were happy with the food. Highly recommend. I can see myself becoming a regular. Thank you Moon Dog's Cafe! PS... Ladies' room was also fit for a lady. Nice and tidy.

First dine-in, my husband and daughter experienced fantastic service and great tasting food at a competitive price. They ordered breakfast and had no complaints. 5/5. Second dine-in, I joined them for brunch. For a Saturday, the place wasn't too hopping, which isn't always bad but when it's your waitress on the slow track - it ain't good! Though friendly enough, after giving us menus, we sat unattended to for a good 15 minutes (felt longer.) We were also given some dirty water cups, one had a lipstick stain on it still, and floaties. Even though these things happen, it was still ick. That said, the food was pretty good, and portioned well. If rated solely on its menu, this place clearly serves "comfort food", in quantity. I'd give my experience a 3/5. So overall-ing it, it's a 4/5. Cheers!

  • Sue S.

Food was ok, service was terrible. Food came out slow and we didn't get our scone until we were just finishing breakfast. This place seems to be lacking management for guidance and order. Save yourself a headache and go to Sill's.

I spent a weekend in Utah looking for a good meal. Moon Dogs had it. Wish I found it on day one. Had a smoked brisket omlette for breakfast. It was really good. The waitress was nice, and attentive. She knew we needed coffee and brought us a pot for the table. Always have a scone. They are amazing.

    (4)
  • Becky G.

Nothing was bad, nothing was CRAZY amazing. I'd go again, especially considering the lack of breakfast/brunch options in Layton. The prices were fair. The decor was a little off-putting. Super random.

The manager was super awesome. Came and talked us into trying a hot dog wrapped in a tortilla. To die for. Absolutely loved it! GO!

I have a couple of prevailing memories of my experience and none involved food. First, the service was slloooooowww, and the menu was odd, look like it was printed on white paper in the back room. The food was ok, I opted away from the BBQ and got a chili burger with chips (did not upgrade to fries). The burger was as I said OK and the chips were fine. The wife got the pulled pork sandwich which she said was "good". The decor was nice the service adequate but nothing is prompting us to return anytime soon.

Stopped in for breakfast with grandpa. Found this place thanks to yelp. We were looking for a local place, instead of the chain restaurants in this area. Name it, this place has it. Breakfast lunch and dinner. Good BBQ, good breakfast good prices. Omelets are 3 eggs. Biscuits and gravy is delicious with a hint of rosemary in the gravy. Coffee is under $2 and unlimited. They will leave a carafe at your table too. Service was on point. We were Checked on several times, some of which was non-verbal. If you are like me, I appreciate the walk bys where the server can see what we need rather than asking every time. Moon, the owner, friendly guy making rounds checking on everything. He stopped to talk, selling his place for lunch and dinner. We will be back for other meals, been open 3 years, sorry we havent seen it sooner. Thanks Moon! See you soon.

I'll give them credit that the food is still pretty good. Though the scone was a bit off. Last time I ate here the outside of the scones were crispy cause they just cooked them. Not so much this time. Service is what had me confused. There didn't seem to be a hostess who was in control of sitting people. It relied more on who ever cruised by the door when you came in is who sits people. When we walked in there was a guy waiting for a table and the waitress only saw us and was going to sit us, ignoring this guy. Once we got a table we cycled through three people who checked on if we got our drinks, but no one took our order. After ten minutes we finally got some one. Even then, while he was taking our order another waitress interrupts us to tell him that he had another table to go to. Then returns to lecture him about leaving menus on an empty table, in the middle of us ordering. Not very professional. Your food can be the best there is, but if you can't organize how your place operates it still drives people away.

There are so many unpleasant reviews I could write. Where to begin...dirty, terrible horrible service, and food is for the garbage and did I mention absolute filth! Your feet stick to the disgusting floors and the servers were absolutely lazy and RUDE! I will never go back. Don't waste your time or money.

The nacho with beef was not a regular nacho, I wasn't expecting it to be a homemade chip with beef, jalapenos, onions and tomatoes. It was fairly good, tasted a little to oily for my liking. The customer service was extremely satisfactory. Great place to chill out.

I've had such high hopes for this place, my husband and myself have been several times. At first the food was AMAZING but the service sucked so bad I was hesitant to go back. Just when there started to get there act together everyone on the wait staff was fired, the food took a nose dive, and they started letting teenagers run the house. Sadly there is little there left to save. Who knows they may fix things up. But until then I will stick with Sills

Man I just don't know about this place. I've been in probably 7 or 8 times and I've had mixed feelings about it. It's a cross between a Village Inn and a biker hangout? The service staff is great, the atmosphere isn't bad, (especially if you like motorcycles but aren't trying to take your family to a biker bar), but the food is just sketchy. It's not terrible, but it's not great either. I usually get the loaded hash browns which come with green peppers, onions, gravy, and two eggs on top of the potatoes. Sounds great, but the green peppers and onions are raw, everytime. Not underdone, but just diced and thrown in raw. The potatoes aren't cooked much either, just warm. I'm not talking about having this experience once, but every time. We also had a lengthy discussion this morning with the waitress about why my daughter didn't want cheese in her breakfast burrito, and then it showed up full of cheese. I can't bring myself to rank this place lower than 3 stars because the staff is so great and the place is clean, but they've gotta get a handle on the cook.

I've been to this place 5 times in the past 2 months, you would think the owner would atleast smile at me by now, he has been there every time i have been in(I have yet to see him smile); I always sit at the bar. I give Moon Dog's 3 stars because the food is decent (I haven't had dinner yet) and the wait staff is decent. Although I do get waited on by usually 2 people (that's not always a good thing because one may think the other has taken care of me, not always so). For the price and quality of food it's a toss-up between these guys and Sill's Cafe. For service and atmosphere, I'd go to Sill's Cafe. Their wait staff has clear cut jobs (tables) and they work well together. The Owner, If he's there is in the kitchen or out chatin happily with customers. I think I will keep this place as my second choice behind Sill's. I love to support local Buisness!

I've been here several times. The interior looks like it was decorated by a crafty Mormon grandma and her biker brother. The staff is friendly and the owner makes a point of coming to talk to patrons to make them feel at home. The menu has some great options, but the food is either hit or miss, and when it's a miss, it's a big miss. I've found in general most of the dishes are under seasoned (specifically salt). I'll keep going back because it's fun and pretty close to me.

Have had breakfast here a few times and very much enjoyed it. Rode my Harley out today and stopped in for lunch...Had the pulled pork sandwich with fries...YUM!!! I told Sarriya, my waitress that they need to get a hold of Guy Feiri and have Diners, Drive-ins and Dives come do a segment. Great atmosphere and "real deal" BBQ!!!

After hearing about this place from Andrew H, I finally made it down here on day for lunch. Despite the place serving American diner food, the décor actually doesn't feel old and dreadful like another diner I visited in the area. I really enjoy the openness and clean tables in the dining area. The lunch menu did not feel too interesting that day, so I went straight for the breakfast menu since they still serve them. I ordered the Gyro Omelet with egg white, no extra charge unlike another popular diner nearby. The omelet was delicious, everything mixed well together inside and outside, and especially the Gyro and Feta. The toasts were ok. The dish actually comes with hash brown, but they gave me diced potato instead, however, they swiftly fixed the problem by bringing me a side of hash brown. The ironically was that the diced potato tasted better, as the hash brown was a little mushy, maybe they tried to fix the problem too quick? Our server provided excellent service and was very good at handling our needs. Overall, my initial impression for Moon Dog Café was very good, and I can see this place taking off quite well in this area. I also had a nice little chat with the "Moon Dog" himself at the cashier before we leave, and he's a pretty interesting guy.

Found this on yelp while staying nearby at a hotel. Brought the whole family - kids, teens, adults - all were pleased. The scones are amazing! Not like any I've ever had but so yummy! Breakfast served all day. French toast, eggs, bacon pretty basic, but the omelets are large and creative. Very affordable and friendly attentive staff. Try a scone if you go!!

Had Dinner there on Saturday night. This place is Super Clean and the service was great . The food was fabulous. The beans and coleslaw where not what I was expecting, But man where they GOOD. I had a BBQ sample plate , meat was most and tender. The BBQ sauce was wonderful. Looking forward to the Prime Rib.

First-time visitor. Based on reviews here, I decided to give the cafe a shot. Food was excellent. Service not-so-much as both waitresses were new and trying to learn a new ipad-based program. But I see potential here and plan to eat here again.

I will not return to this cafe. The server asked me if I wanted a pulled pork or taco meat salad. I ordered the taco meat salad. She didn't even listen to what I said. She brought me the pulled pork salad. After bringing this to her attention she brought me the "taco meat" salad. She delivered it to my table and said "they told me this is the taco meat salad". Strange comment I thought to myself. Upon tasting the "taco meat" i realized it was just bean sauce. I got up to leave and pay for my drink. The owner asked if I was being taken care of. I explained that the menu said taco meat and that bean sauce is not taco meat. He replied that the bean sauce is their taco meat. Don't advertise a salad with taco meat if you are going to cheap out and use bean sauce again. I left hungry and my lunch hour was over and I had to return to work.

Came in first, got seated last. Got order taken last. Slow to even take order. Food Luke warm. Gravy not exciting. Cannot recommend this place. Overheard waitress talk about 6 people let go in last 3 weeks so seems they have issues.

After driving by countless times we finally decided to stop at Moon Dog's for a taste. We will be back. Probably within a week. The previous reviewer that compared this place to Sills is nuts. Moon Dog's is far and away a better experience. The portions are generous, the price is fair, the building is clean, and the taste is incredible. They have regular specials that are interesting and good, I had an apple sausage omelet today that was great. The owner is usually present (always a plus) and the service is friendly. I hope to become a regular.

Food was decent. Service was TERRIBLE.. Our waitress never came to check on us after food came out. Didn't get any refills.. Plus we didn't get our scone and toast that came with our omelets. When I told her we didn't get those items, she told us "Oh, they just came up." I figured she'd take it off our bill, but nope.. Not coming here again.

I really did try to cook breakfast this past Sunday. I had food in the oven and everything. The heating element caught on fire. It's a sign. I'm not meant to cook. I'm meant to eat out. We went to Moon Dogs because we had never tried it (plus I didn't want cold cereal or toast). My first impression was great. We were greeted with a hearty "Hey guys! Nice to see you! We will be right with you." We were seated immediately, got our drinks within 2 minutes. My husband said its some of the best diner style coffee he has ever had and it came in a big mug and they left a giant pot of it on the table for him. The decor is clean, inviting and even looks almost fancy. I really liked it. I had a hard time rating it because it was good, but not amazing. But makes me intrigued to come back and try something else. I got the chicken fried steak, he got 1/2 biscuits and gravy with 1/2 loaded hashbrowns. Our son got the kids chocolate chip pancake with bacon and juice. The juice was no extra charge with the kids meal which is seriously great. The biscuit with my husbands dish was dense yet fluffy and tasted freshly baked. The whole dish was great. My chicken fried steak was crispy and smothered in more of their yummy sausage gravy. The only thing i didn't like was my hashbrowns were bland and mushy. I like some crispiness to them. I DID add salt and pepper but they still weren't great. My husband loved the loaded hashbrowns though. They have peppers and onions and are smothered in sausage gravy. As far as the kids meal went I was expecting like a little chocolate chip pancake or maybe 2 small ones. Uhh.... This MASSIVE inch thick plate sized pancake came out. It was chock full of melty chocolate chips. Of course the 3 year old tore into it with enthusiasm. He ate like a 1/4 of it and was stuffed. It was good though. I ate some. Our drinks stayed full and the atmosphere was fun. I want to try their lunch or dinner menu sometime.

Great food, large portions, good prices! We come here often for breakfast and sometimes lunch. Have never had anything that I did not like. I also like to eat where you feel like you are helping out small businesses.

I've been to Moon Dog's 4 or 5 times, mostly lunch, but tonight we had dinner. I love the pulled chicken sandwich, but really everything I've had has been awesome. The homemade chips are my favorite. The service is great and everyone is always friendly. They always keep our drinks filled. Tonight we had fried mozzarella sticks and fried ravioli as an appetizer and they were to die for. We'll keep coming back. I'd rather support the small businessman than some corporate chain any day.

Noticed that this restaurant was finally opened and wanted to try it out. Right now this is a great place for breakfast and lunch. Dinner items are being added as they grow and finalize their menu. Moon Dog's Cafe is owned by a guy that enjoys grilling/smoking foods. The menu is now split into a morning and evening menu and is much better. It is an open restaurant with room for groups, but no real privacy due to the size of restaurant. The wait staff is somewhat inexperienced and some patience is needed with them. Is getting better each time I go. My first visit with my wife, we were served the wrong food once and had the salad come with our meal instead of before as requested. Moon Dog's Cafe staff fixed the issue quickly and politely. Second visit went very well just a little slow. My wife, son, and myself ate lunch there and ordered some of the smoked pulled pork dishes. The "Big Porker" burger that I ordered was OK as the smokiness of the pork was lost in the burger patty that was a dry and flavorless. The pulled pork had good smokey flavor with a lot a juice (maybe a little too much), but worth the order. My wife had the pulled pork platter with coleslaw and salad. The coleslaw is nothing special and pretty average. Salad was basic with a good raspberry vinaigrette dressing. The platter comes with banana peppers and chips (homemade). I think how it is currently served it needs a bread to balance it out. The chips came with both our meals and were made their with a spice mixture that needs a little more spice and a little less salt. Dinner at Moon Dog's Cafe is pretty good with Ribs that are great on the inside but too chard on the outside for me. The new Moon Dog's burger is really good and a big improvement from my lunch visit. Pulled pork sandwich is good, as well as the addition of baked beans that are a little sweet and good. Overall my second visit for dinner was much better, but still a three star place. Moon Dog's Cafe has two sauces a Spicy and a Sweet BBQ sauce that are both really good and add the right amount of flavor to the pulled pork. They really should give the possibility for customers to buy the sauce to take home. Overall it shows that this is a recently opened restaurant run with little experience. After talking with the owner it has a lot of potential and worth going to now for a breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Prices seem good for most of what you get. Will have to go back and try the breakfast/brunch menu (before 2pm) for the scones that they say are good. Three stars for now for a decent lunch and dinner. Hours are from 6am - 9pm, with a drive through opening in the future for quick eating items from what I remember from the owner. Update: Changes to the review because of revisions to his business.

Barbecue is always tough to review because each type is different. That was the case with Moon Dog's Cafe. The food was good. If you are looking for good barbecue you could do worse than Moon Dog's. However if you are looking for five star barbecue, my guess is you need to go to a place other than SLC (I'm just saying...).

Last time I trust this certain "friend" with my palate and time. Boo, that's how un-wonderful the experience was. Is it possible to get PTSD from a dining experience? First impression? Dirty and poorly decorated. Kind of like a broken Harley collided with a late 70's living room in a double wide. We were seated by the owner who informed us that "we have the best BBQ in the valley". Why set people up for disappointment? Under promise and over deliver? We were handed 5 printed pages (menu) covered in the chin drippings of the previous six weeks worth of customers. Overlooked it and stayed positive. Ordered pork nachos which arrived cold. Shredded cheese was still intact and unmelted, it was topped with olives and chopped banana peppers. Kind of looked like the dressing bar from a maverick country store threw up on a plate. Did I mention it was cold? When we ordered, we were asked if we wanted salsa and sour cream. Well, that's what we got. Nice 1.5 oz cups of salsa and sour cream, marked with a sharpee, like we were at a jack in the box in Watts. We opted to pay the bill and hit the road. No way we were risking a whole meal. The good news is that I fully expected cats to be wandering the place and a cook in the back with a smoke hanging from his lip. Guess I didn't look hard enough.

Nice atmosphere, super friendly staff and tasty food. Had a made-to-order omelet breakfast. The portions were ample compared to cost! Definitely will return when passing through Utah.

I would much rather eat at a locally owned cafe vs. a chain restaurant. When you eat at Moon Dog's, bring your apetite. The food portions are HUGE and well prepared. I have only eaten breakfast here so I can't speak on the lunch or dinner services but I have heard nothing but good from friends that have eaten lunch and dinner here. The only things I could find anything negative to say about this establishment is: 1) The photocopied menus need to be updated with some real menus. 2) I have only eaten here once when I felt like my server had previous server experience. The other times, my server has forgotten what we ordered and had to come back and ask, even after she wrote it down and the plates have gone to the wrong person at our table.

Here is how I rate things...this will help you use this review to decide for yourself. Like Einstein...everything is relative. So, for what Moon Dog's is...its 5 star in my book. Here's why...its a diner that does not pretend to be anything but its own unique style. It's not trying to be Denny's or Flo's or anything else. Its kind of just its own thing and you have to approach it that way. If you're looking for the traditional trucker stop or flapjack house, your expectations will color your experience. The guy has a passion for BBQ done right...and so some of his menu items are interesting (but good) like the Omelet that I had which has his Pulled Pork in it. I've taken friends of mine there on 5 different occasions and each time I've spoken with the owner and asked questions about him and the business. Like others have mentioned there are some quirks, such as the menus being photocopies. Had they talked to him, they would have found that his business has been open 6 months and that he has ordered menus and these copied menus are temporary. I think making a judgment based on the menus is short sighted and hasty. My overall take on the food is, that Moon Dog's KNOWS BBQ. If you love BBQ and a laid back, unpretentious atmosphere I think you'll enjoy Moon Dogs for what it is. If you're looking for that place that is eclectic and different, and you happen to enjoy BBQ as well Moon Dog's just might do the trick. I will add, that they have more to offer than just BBQ, but this is really where they shine. They have some menu items that are really tasty, such as the Cream Cheese Burger, which at first I kind of raised my brow to, but was happily surprised. If you're looking for that traditional diner that is a step up from Dennys but still has that traditional feel to it, this may not be the experience you are looking for. Thats ok too. If you're a regular Flap Jacks kind of person, check out Sills Cafe in Layton. Its probably more your speed. I found Moon Dog (Steve) to be very pleasant and friendly, and genuine about his passion for creating a great experience for people.

Great breakfasts - try the Yorkie omelette (with pulled pork). Found this cafe en route to Lake Powell; planned our return trip so we could eat here again. Excellent service -- special orders are no problem.

After driving by a few times and seeing the smoker finally made it in. Went with some friends all of us had high hopes. The photocopy of a photocopy of the menu should have been a tip off as to how the lack of attention to detail would affect our visit. The food was mediocre at best. I ordered brisket and found it ok. Tried my friend's meatloaf and found it below average. The salad was nothing special. Had no desire for dessert. Plate included a piece of bread. They just used a slice of cheap grocery white bread. Would have preferred either homemade bread or cornbread. Again lack of attention to detail. Service was fair. Met the owner who wanted feedback. I think he has the Passion not sure he has the know how.

As with any new resturaunt that comes into my area, I get a little a sketchy. Moon Dog's though is well worth the try. To start off with I started out at this place for a new breakfast joint to enjoy. There are way too many chain resturaunts around and the only other indepentantly owned ones have lost my desire to patron since moon dog's. The breakfasts are delicious, hardy and filling, and the owner has added his own unique style to there enjoyment. Now if your looking for a great BBQ joint then I would also reccommend moon dog's, the meat is smoked over long hours for the full flavor and exceptional enjoment that it brings, Plus the owner likes to offer specials on things you wouldn't expect to see. The breafasts are great, try the gyro omlet and the mealoaf there are worth it, along with the pulled chicken sanwhich and any of the great items offered at moon dog's

This is within walking distance of work so we've been over for lunch a few times already. They are still working out the kinks but nothing serious. The food takes a tiny bit long to prepare but the staff is very friendly and attentive. Everything I've had has been very good. Their Navajo Taco is excellent! The pulled pork sandwich with a bit of cole slaw on it is delicious. They have a spicy and sweet BBQ sauce. I didn't care for either one separately but if I mix them, 2 parts sweet to 1 part spicy it's perfect. They make their own potato chips every day and they're quite good. They have a seasoning on them but no salt and I really liked that. One time they were a bit to brown, almost burned but other times they've been just right.

We went here for a Sunday breakfast after driving by. I don't understand the negative reviews. It was clean, fast, and very good. Nothing extraordinary, but if you want good Sunday morning (or any morning, I suppose) breakfast it is a great place to go. We'll definitely be back for breakfast and to try dinner some time as well.

I love the staff at this restaurant! The food has remained solidly good. The sausage gravy is really nicely seasoned and the bacon is thickly sliced and a generous portion. This has become our go-to breakfast restaurant.

Went here for lunch and had the pulled pork sandwich with some sweet bbq sauce, coleslaw, and banana peppers which was really good. Came with beans which were delicious and homemade potato chips which were also really good. Was told about this place from my dad and he said the cream cheese burger was awesome, so I may need to try this next time.

When I walked in I expected a BBQ place. You know, brisket, sausage, ribs and chicken. It was not your typical BBQ place. The food is very good. The staff is friendly. The menu hardly offers any real BBQ choices. Still though I'd come back.

I really would give this place 0 stars. The food was cold and I do not think the health department would be too happy with the it as well. When we got our food, it was cold. The baked potato was hours old and brown inside. When we told our server, she argued that they were fresh. Then the owner came out and argued that they were fresh as well without even an apology. He said that the potatoes came out of the oven at 3 but it 8 at night. I also watch a guy come from the front of the restaurant after handling money and walked back to the kitchen to deal with the food without washing his hands. I am a server and was very disappointed with the service and food. I will not be returning there and am just hoping I don't get sick from the old an cold food. I could have gone elsewhere for better quality food at the price I paid here.
