This is the best Thai food in Houston, without a doubt. After returning from Thailand, I have been feverishly looking for good Thai food (especially my favorite, Som Tum). Vieng Thai definitely had the best Som Tum that I have had since returning from Thailand, however I would caution anyone ordering it that it is extremely spicy if order it "Thai Style". I wish that I had brought more of an appetite, however I know that I will definitely be coming back to try more (if not all) of the menu. On another note, after reading the Yelp reviews I was expecting this to be in a REALLY bad neighborhood, however I did not find that at all. It was not the nicest area of town, but I definitely didn't feel like my life was in jeopardy. This is definitely a hidden gem in Houston, everyone should make a trip.

The food here is pretty inconsistent. I had a good green curry fried rice once I think. So I took a group of friends here since it was also close to work. What a mistake! All of the foods we ordered were too oily... from fried rice to pad thai. Boo. My friends did not like me that day.

Hands down, the best Thai food in town. Vieng Thai has completely made me rethink how I could have ever liked places like Nit Noi or other mainstream, Americanized Thai restaurants in the first place. If you want delicious, authentic Thai food, this is the place to get it. Although it's in a more downmarket area of town (alright, it's pretty rough), don't let that deter you. You'll love the kitschy, welcoming interior as soon as you walk in. The service can be a little distant, but if you inquire about the dishes and show an interest in more than just Pad Thai you'll see them perk right up, offering recommendations and advice. Pad Thai, being the national dish of Thailand, is immensely popular and Vieng Thai's is the best I've ever tasted. But if you limit yourself only to that dish, you're missing out. Order the papaya salad to start, which is spicy, salty and refreshing and the perfect opening to your meal. If you happen to be dining alone, you can grab one of the many magazines the restaurant stocks (ranging from golf to travel to fashion) while you wait for your entree. I found this to be a nice, if odd, touch. For your main course, the Pad See Ew cannot be missed. Vieng Thai is the only -- the ONLY -- Thai restaurant in Houston that makes Pad See Ew correctly, with Chinese broccoli and delicate, sweet bean sauce that perfectly accompanies the flat noodles and egg. Also fantastic are their curries, especially the Massamun curry, as another reviewer noted. The staff won't hurry you out, so it's tempting to while away an afternoon in their dining room sipping hot jasmine tea and watching the pan-Asian news channel on the big screen TV. One thing to note, however, is that their hours are tempermental and apt to change without notice. I've showed up at 6pm on a Friday evening only to be asked to leave; private party, I was told. This has also happened on a Saturday afternoon and a Sunday afternoon. Somehow, though, this only seems to add to the charm of Vieng Thai, as if it's a secret garden with tempermental guardians but exquisite food if you'll only come back another day.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. It was awful! I ordered mussaman curry with beef and first they brought it with chicken. When they finally brought it with beef it was greasy and had no taste. There was very little coconut milk in it. Mussaman curry should be thick and rich like a stew. This was runny and had thick layer of grease floating on top. The people who rate this place as excellent obviously have never had Thai food before. I told them I could not eat it because it was so bad and they brought me the check. No offer to make something else or to take it off the check. This place is nasty! Don't waste your time or money.

I love Thai food so I was thrilled to find a highly rated Thai place near my house. I was even more thrilled when I saw how much of a hole in the wall it was as that usually bodes well. I was so disappointed! We tried yellow curry chicken and a noodle dish and, despite ordering it spicy, the only flavor was grease. It's more like food I would expect to find on a lunch buffet than at an authentic Thai restaurant. Too bad because I would love to have a neighborhood Thai place.

Had some Thai food for a UYE a few weeks ago. I have to say that I have never been to this part of town. It really doesn't look like much from the outside. There were alot of yelpers already there by the time I arrived. I ordered a shrimp/pork dish and thought it was quite good. The restaurant seem irritated by the size of our group initially but seem to warm up to us the longer we stayed. When we paid our bills they basically trusted us to tell them what we had ordered, which was surprising.

My 100th review!!! Loved it! I'm a Thai fanatic and am always glad to find authentic Thai places around the city. The location isn't convenient because there's not much else around there to do (except maybe the Marquee center) but it's not too far outside the loop. It's a little hole in the wall place that serves great and cheap food. We had soft spring rolls as our appetizer ($2.99 for 2) and I loved the peanut sauce that it came with. It's similar to Vietnamese style peanut sauce but more peanut flavor. When I go to any Thai place for the first time, I always have to get pad thai because 1) I love it, and 2) it allows me to compare to other Thai restaurants. For $5.99, they give you a generous portion that's not too greasy and full of that balanced sweet and salty flavor. My boyfriend had a chicken stir fry dish (M8 on the menu for $7.99... can't recall the name) and it was fresh, flavorful, and not overly greasy. What I really liked about this place is that they give you a big bowl of rice for the table to share (like a Chinese or Viet restaurant would do). Most Thai places around Houston only give you an individual rice portion and you have to pay extra if you want more. The owner was very nice and friendly and was happy when we told him we found the restaurant through Yelp. He let us know that his restaurant is also BYOB with no corking/bottle fee! So for having the cheapest and very authentic Thai food in Houston and being able to bring my own drinks, I'll definitely be back. The service is pretty typical "Asian". In other words, they seat you, give you your drink, take your order, bring you your food, and that's it. You won't really get the customary "Hey, how's everything tasting?" or even a drink refill that you typically see at American restaurants. I can look past this since the food was so good and well priced.

Was craving for something spicy last night so we found this place on yelp. This place has the best papaya salad so far, out of all the Thai restaurants I have tried in Houston area. I also ordered two more dishes to eat with white rice but there were just ok, however the thing that makes me like about this place is their price which is very decent and the foods overall are ok. I want to come back and try their Thai boat and Tom yum noodle.

This is the Thai restaurant to which I compare all others. I've been here at least fifteen times, and I've made it through almost the entire menu, with only two dishes that just did not appeal to me. The curries are exquisite, the salads tasty and the soups are amazing. The portions are not huge, but they're not pricey, so get several and share. The service is inconsistent, but not terrible. There is usually only one server: either the grouchy older guy or the helpful younger man. Either way, it's tolerable. Worth it for the food!

Definitely a hole in the wall joint. My brother first recommended this place for lunch once, but me being quick to judge a book by its cover, said pass and to goto went kim chau instead. My point is don't let the outside deceive you, for those that love thai food, this place is definitely top notch. The inside does not really look like a restaurant, more like an old school hotel lobby turned into a dining area haha. Appearances is one thing, but the food on the other hand is spectacular. Went with my favorite thai dishes, pad see eew with chicken and pad prik khing with beef. Although the portions seem to look small, after my friend and I cleaned our plates, we thought why not order another dish. Boy were we in for a surprise, after a quick break I felt completely stuffed and knew I could not handle a third dish. Don't know what else to add except the cliche, never judge a book by its cover.

I like Thai food, but never craved it often because I felt that it was a little on the sweet and greasy side. Vieng Thai is probably the best Thai food I've ever had. It's very authentic and fresh tasting. This is the only place I've ever experienced that didn't dump a pound of sugar into all of their dishes to cater to American palates. I LOVED the Boat Noodles. It's similar to pho, but the broth has a deeper flavor. My bowl looked nothing like the photo posted by another reviewer. The broth wasn't that dark, and I didn't think that it was greasy. I am craving it again as I type this. We also had the Pad Kee Mao, which was amazing. The noodles were cooked perfectly, and it had just the right amount of spice. My boyfriend instantly proclaimed that he loved it and would probably have dreams about it until our next visit. I noticed in other reviews that this place is known for bad service, but I didn't experience that at all. Our waitress was nice enough, and we never had to wait very long for anything or flag her down like we do at most authentic Asian restaurants. The only slight downside was the Pad Thai. It was still pretty good, but I prefer mine a little less sweet and with less sauce. I'll know not to order the "Thai for Dummies" dish next time. We ordered 3 entrees for about $27. This is our new favorite Thai restaurant. Don't be scared by the dumpy looking exterior and shady neighborhood - come on in and try their awesome food!

Pad Thai was bland as was massaman curry.

Vieng Thai is without a doubt the best Thai restaurant in Houston. It's a mom and pop run hole in the wall in a God-forsaken part of Houston, but you'll find yourself coming back again and again. Do yourself a favor and skip the Pad Thai, you've had it a hundred times already so live a little. There are things on this menu you'll not find in any other Thai restaurant in Houston like the Papaya salad Laotian style or the pork bellies. For more familiar dishes, try the Kee Mao noodles, the larb, or the Massaman curry. The galangal and coconut milk soup is so good you'll not just order enough for a second bowl, but enough to take home and bathe in. Call in your order for take out or grab a six pack of Singha and enjoy some Thai TV with your dinner! BYOB

I'm giving it 5 stars because their spicy clams = amazingness. Seriously, truly delicious. Pad thai was great too, we had both veggie and chicken. We had something else with pork made in "Thai" spicy and it was very hot, but good. I'll definitely be back for more clams. I think it would be a great place for a bday party because it's BYOB with NO corking fee. Definitely a dive located in a seedy shopping strip, but I don't care about stuff like that when I am getting good food. AND, it's conveniently located about a mile from Edwards- Silber theatre. Service was pretty fast too. We ordered about 6:40ish and we were eating by 7.

An average place in my opinion. Food was pretty good, but the service was unfriendly and the portion size was small. I much prefer Esarn Thai which has both awesome food, awesome service and larger portion sizes! I had read all the outstanding reviews, but they certainly did not live up to my expectations and the service was a turnoff. I would strongly recommend Esarn Thai over Vieng Thai anyday of the week.

You don't expect to hear some MJ when you're dining at a hole in the wall Thai place on Long Point, but that has to be a good omen, right? We stopped here for lunch on a visit from Austin, and I'm glad we did. We ordered some cream cheese curry spring roll type things, and I loved 'em. Then again, I'm a sucker for pretty much anything with cream cheese. I also got the lunch portion of the garlic chicken and savored every garlicy bite. My fiance got the masamam curry and ate all of it, so I imagine it was pretty good. Vieng Thai is in my old stomping grounds - Spring Branch- so it's nice to know there's one more solid Asian restaurant I can go to when visiting home.

My second favorite Thai restaurant in Houston. Feels home cooked, food is fresh and they can make it as spicy as you want. Favorite dish is green curry and yum woon sen. If you are wanting high quality Thai food, this is the place!

I've been here twice and ordered the spicy eggplant both times. They prepare it very well; the eggplant is perfectly cooked, not too soft or mushy, and is wonderfully flavorful. My only complaint is that the food is a bit on the oily side, but I hardly notice after mixing in the rice. Recommended.

I was treated here to a surprise birthday dinner by someone very special. She even was able to sneak one of our favorite bottles of wine into the car without me seeing it so that we could take advantage of Vieng Thai's BYOB without a corkage fee. I like to consider myself an amateur connoisseur of Thai cuisine. This place rocks it. The food was incredibly flavorful and was presented beautifully. My only complaint is that the decor is pretty drab. It could definitely do with a facelift, as long as they don't mess up the food at all. Or, for that matter, mess with changing their BYOB policy.

I think I would give this 4 1/2 stars. Yelp is out to get me, though, so does not allow for such subtleties. I would rank Thai Gourmet a little better overall, but Vieng Thai is more like my Thai restaurant because it is closer and more like family (more on that later). As many times as I have been here I am surprised I have never written a review. Probably because I am lazy. Or just really important and can't be taken away from really important things. Or just lazy. The food here is consistently good. I like pretty much everything I have had here (but with their pad Thai was a little better) but what really prompted me to review was the last time we went we got the green curry and it is outstanding. Usually green is not on the top of my list but there is something about theirs that makes it rise above the rest. It is one of those foods I will obsess about. I almost divorced the wifey when I discovered she ate some of our week old rice with the leftover green curry sauce from the night before. Yes, we took nothing but the sauce to go. Yes, it elevated the week-old rice, and yes, I actually got angry over all of the above. For one, it is my job to selfishly eat all of the food and for two I had been thinking about doing that exact thing all day. Finally, this place is kind of like home for me. Yes, it is in a ghetto (and not even ghetto fabulous) strip center and yes the interior will not blow you away with super hip people and floral arrangements but it is happy. They have an inexplicable disco ball hanging in one place and a perpetually lighted non-Christmas tree. They also have a friendly staff that knows us now and one of the ladies there has a bossy (in a good way) 5 year old girl who will play with my kids after they eat. She tells them exactly what they can and can't touch and what games they should play, etc. It is like they are cousins. So go eat there. Support good food and disco ball randomness. Just don't eat all of my green curry.

The food is delicious and the staff are always so friendly and funny. The chicken pad thai noodles are to die for and the green curry is mind blowing. This place is great for a large group, a romantic dinner, or even take out. YUM YUM YUM!

It's hard to find - the sign in the strip mall just says something like restaurant, maybe thai. But it's worth finding. If you've been to Kanomwan, it's the same thing but without the character. BYOB, cheap, good food, hole in the wall. As usual, we got our typical feast for two... a soup - with a great kick that hits you in the back of the throat, a fried rice - very tasty, a whole fish - good sized, and another entree - based on other reviews, I chose the mussels and sadly was not that impressed, I think because I expected them to be in the shells... but they were very tasty. All in all, a delicious meal.

Can someone tell me what's so great about this place? When we walked in on a Friday night, we were greeted by a grumpy waiter. When I asked him what's the difference between the red curry and the panang curry, he replied "they're different, with different ingredients". Well duh. To make things even better...the lights went out while we were waiting for our food. Both the pad see ew and the panang curry were drenched in oil. Needless to say, I will NOT be returning here.

Just a reminder. Three stars means A-OK. I'm not hatin'. But the thrill is gone. This was my first taste of REAL Thai. Not the watery, bland white meat chicken American influenced Thai that is found everywhere. The place looks authentically Thai, and the food is authentically Thai. But there are some better places. I think it in poor taste to name other places, but if you are interested, read my reviews. There is a lot of hype about this place. I think it comes partly from the thrill that some people might get from traveling into the barrio. It is not a particularly dangerous area, just run down. The building feels authentic, but is just neglected. The menu used to be more extensive, but has been revamped. Some have noted the quaintness of a restaurant that is routinely out of menu items. I thought that the first few times, but now it is just annoying, I want a restaurant that actually plans for the work day. The food is still solid. One of the few places that serves E-Sarn sausage and papaya salad. And they have a good Kee Mao. But it seems like the heat level in the spice is inversely proportional to the number of Anglos in the restaurant. I like it HOT, and the last few times the heat was not there. It is nice that one can BYOB, but I would rather just order it. This place will always have a place in my heart, but I will save the place in my stomach for other Thai food, unless I am in the immediate area.

Don't get it twisted, Vieng's is kinda in the hood. But that's okay because I was born in the streetz. There isn't much for décor or atmosphere in this place but luckily I had a crazy group of Yelpers there and we created our own ambience. They had some Christmas decorations up and a big TV with the Food Network playing. I'm not picky about my Thai food but I do love it. Never been to Thailand so I can't say I've tasted authentic Thai. But Vieng's ingredients were all very fresh. I had the Thom Kha soup with tofu and I absolutely loved it. The mix of tangy, salty and spicy warmed my belly and made me smile. I tasted a bit of the Pad Kee Mao and some of the Jungle Curry but the Massaman Curry was my favorite dish because it's what I ordered and I know what I'm doing. I like sweet curries and this had a good balance of sweet and spicy. I only wish it had more carrots. Bring a big group of your friends here, some bottles of wine (they're BYOB) and enjoy a plate of rice and some curry.

If authentic Thai = greasy, small portions, bad service, and dirty atmosphere, then sign me up for the Americanized version. Not sure what the fuss is about, perhaps we went on an off day. By off day, it must have been a REAAAAALLy off day. Too bad first impressions are too hard to shake. Will NOT be back.

Worse Thai food ever! Thai people working, but not Thai food. Would given a zero star if I can. No galanga or kafir lime leaves for Tom Yum, i would rather eat a package of Mama instant noodle!

After doing the second installment of the "Thai Throwdown" last Saturday, I can happily report that Vieng Thai's owner-operator cannot claim the "Thai Nazi" crown. As the UYE numbers went up, I thought a "heads up" was in order and I called them three days before to inform them that a group of 18 was coming for lunch. I left my name and number with the lady who answered the phone but kept the undercover Yelp UYE details to myself. The key to any good lie is having a back-story ready for any superficial questions. For instance, when I called the day before the event to firm up numbers, the lady decided to ask: "What is this group?" Without a missing a beat, I told her that this was a church group. It was that or "Overeaters Anonymous". Tom (the owner) called me back 45 minutes before the UYE started and asked if I was still coming and with my group. When I arrived, I introduced myself to him and he pointed me to the tables that he set up. He came around to take our orders; he and his team kept up reasonably with the service as well as that of the other non-Yelp patrons. At the end, he informed us to each pay at the register by telling him what each ordered - basically, this was on the honor system. He also waived the credit card minimum for at least one Yelper. Amazing. While the others continued talking in true Yelp fashion (i.e. loud and fun), I settled up with him. After expressing my personal thanks for accommodating us and for a great meal, he shook my hand, told me his name, and said it was his pleasure. At that point, I realized that he really does care about your satisfaction, even if he's not backslapping you during your meal. * I had the same Pad Prik King meal I had before - it was still awesome. And, at no point did we mention "Yelp".

dragged my friend with me here this weekend. she loves thai food...i love thai food...perfect! after reading the reviews, i expected this place to be really shabby/rundown/gross. it wasnt so bad and the restaurant looked uncluttered and clean. i also expected terrible service and mean waiters, but we definitely did not experience this during our visit. we were asked if our food tasted okay, got smiled at, and didnt receive any attitude when we had questions. i loved the thai tea and soft spring rolls. we also ordered the chicken pad thai which was pretty awesome. my friend is in love with madam mam's back in austin (crazy, borderline obsessed with madam mams) and so when she said that this tasted just like madam mams, i knew she loved this place. i tried some of her pad see ewe and couldnt stop eating off of her plate for the rest of the meal. SO GOOD. definitely happy i came here!

Just went to this little hidden gem today with the Yelp group. The place was very welcoming and had a 'locals only' feel, not some another overrun restaurant. The prices were pretty reasonable. I ordered the soft spring rolls, red curry, and a Thai Tea for $15 - all were a good choice. I would have only asked for a bit more rice, but not a spoiler though. The menu offered lots of options. I saw soups, fun salads, curry in a hurry, main dishes, and some appetizing appetizers. I'd go back for sure for the following reasons: great for larger groups, hidden but welcoming, reasonable prices, and tasty food.

As a participant of the UYE this last Saturday, I thought I'd take the time to review the experience (and get myself one review closer to that 'golden ring' which we all know as Elite status). For those that don't know, UYE stands for Uncontrollable Yak Eater. At least that's what Edgar told me. He wouldn't lie, right? While enjoying the variety of eclectic Yelpers that streamed in, I failed to find any Thai Yak recipes on the menu. Edgar! If entertaining conversation were the ratings criteria, then I'd give out 5 stars. But alas no. I must separate the people from the food and ambience. Do water damaged ceiling tiles count as ambience? Yeah, I didn't think so. That about sums up the ambience. As for the food, it was fine. My Massaman beef curry was tasty enough. Although the portion was a bit small considering that we were paying for 'dinner entrees', not a lunch special. I would like to say that my diet Coke was refreshing, but the owner never asked anyone if they'd like anything to drink (aside from the unpleasant chlorinated water that was provided). One of the Yelpers never received their Pad Thai. Even when they informed the manager, it took another 15 minutes to bring it out. By then, everyone had finished eating. We also had to ask someone to refill the water glasses. Suffice it to say, service isn't a high priority there. So, to wrap things up: Vieng Thai = just okay. Yelp Members = awesomeness personified... and I'm not just saying that because of that Elite thing that I really want ;-)

Long Point might be one of my favorite stretches of road in Houston. On one block you'll have some really good taquerias and food trucks, then you'll drive through a few blocks of really good Korean restaurants. Finally a mile further down you could find some of the best Pho in town. I think Vieng Thai is the lone Thai place on this stretch of road that I know of. I had been to Thai Gourmet, Thai Sticks and couple of other forgettable Thai restaurants, but I was presented with a challenge. A friend mentioned she is not a fan of Thai food, too sweet. How could that be? My experience with Thai is curry, spice, and fresh vegetables. Some of it is sweet but enough spice to dispel any thoughts of too sweet. She presented me with a challenge, I have ONE chance to make her a fan of Thai food. Luckily I like to eat, so I was up to the challenge. Research begins at Vieng Thai Vieng Thai was the first Thai restaurant I visited after the thread I posted on Yelp yelp.com/topic/houston-t… . Vieng Thai, like most restaurants on Longpoint is located in a nondescript strip center and even if you're looking for it you will pass it up at least once. I went with a couple of people from the office, it gives me a better chance to try different things from the menu. We started with Tom Yum with shrimp. I thought the broth was weak. I like a strong citrus lime, lemongrass, and spicy flavor in my broth. It even looked weak. The soup didn't have that rich tint to it. Add a few white mushrooms and shrimp and you get an OK soup. I then had Chicken Pad Thai, Pork Pad Prik Khing (Basil Pork), and Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodles). The Pad Thai was very good and the chili sauce with Prik Khing was OK. My favorite on the table was the Kee Mao, the fresh vegetables with basil and chicken stir fried with flat noodles was delicious. I can see myself craving this particular dish. While Vieng Thai had the honor of being the first Thai restaurant I visited in my research. It might have suffered because as I visited each Thai resatuarnt on my list the food just got better and better.

I go to Vieng Thai a couple of times a month. Sometimes three times a month. So in short I'm obsessed. (= Thai can be found in almost every part of Houston now. Even the suburbs have Thai. So why venture to this somewhat of a hole-in-the-wall establishment in a questionable neighboorhood week after week? In short THE FOOD. The flavor of any dish with basil pops in your mouth. I have had tried almost everything on the menu including sartor, the Thai "stinky bean." As far as the appetizers, I enjoyed the E-Sarn Sausage the most. The flavor lingers in my mouth afterward leaving me wanting more. The pad thai which is a favorite of many is just ok here, but why order pad thai when you can have boat noodle soup or pad grapraow? The soup is good here although Kanonwan on Telephone Road is a little better. If you want atmosphere, you've come to the wrong place. The decor is modest and there is a tv with subtitles on at all times. It is BYOB though so with a couple of drinks and food this exceptional it doesn't matter! Eat here ASAP. You will NOT be sorry! :D

Thanks to Edgar, our yelp family was able to come here for the 2nd edition of the Thai Challenge UYE. First off, this place is great due to the extended operating hours. 10 pm most nights? They have a private lot so plenty of parking. They didn't waste a lot of time or money on the decor. Pretty basic. This would be fine except I noticed the cups/utensils were a bit on the dirty side. I went ahead and disregarded it as most authentic asian places are not that clean. I had the pad thai chicken and shrimp. I must say this was a very flavorful dish. It was a decent size not huge but enough to get me satisfied during lunch. The only complaint was it was really greasy. Prices were fair. I also had some of Heidi's crispy spring rolls, those were yummy! (Almost like an eggroll). The soft spring rolls were eh. Definitely, the better of the 2 "Thai Nazis" but I think Thai Gourmet is the King of Thai in Houston.

This place serves a twist on your typical Pho called the Boat noodle, with lots of spices and herbs. You don't even hace to add anything else to it! Another one of my favorites is Pad See Ew (stir fried fat noodles w/ chicken/beef and chinese broccoli). Pad Thai is good too. Pass on the Crispy egg noodle though. (that's better at an authentic chinese place) Food is a little bit pricey for the area it's in, but thai food is never cheap anyways. As far as service goes, there's always one waiter and one waiter only. Yes he never smiles, but hey at least the food is worth going back for =)

The neighborhood is unbecoming of this great spot. but the food says it all. Everything was prepared fresh and the way I expected it. The dishes came out quick and servers were very sociable. May I recommend: spicy clams, pad thai, and green curry. Green curry was a little watery, but that may be because I'm limiting my carb intake so I didn't grab as much rice.

This is the worst restaurant ever ever. The waiters have attitude. They are not friendly and the way they service are so rude. We felt like we were not welcome in this restaurant. The food is like crap!!! We ordered a dish of papaya salads with raw crab but it came out as a very small dish, not even enough for one person, and the crab was really small ( only the legs). The WORST dish ever is Pad Thai! I can't believe that thai restaurant has terrible Pad Thai which is the most traditional dish of Thai food. they put too much seasoning which is not healthy. They even charged us for ordering 3 Thai teas when we only ordered 2 Thai Tea and 1 water. I do not recommend this restaurant for anyone and for those who thinks this restaurant is good, i think they don't have tongue or have lost their ability of tasting. i have been living in LA near the Thai Town area, so i believe i can tell which one is good or not.

Came here after a coworker recommended this place, and I liked it a lot! Like all the reviews before me, you should come with the expectation that this place is a hole in a wall with few points for decor, atmosphere, and customer service. But often times, places like that serve the best food. I ordered the Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodles) for $7.99. Not terribly cheap, but pretty reasonably priced. When my food arrived, I thought that it didn't look like that much (portion-wise) but I was definitely way too full at the end of it. The spiciness level was just right - enough to have a kick, but not too over the top to have me reaching for my water after each bite. The vegetables in it were pretty sparse, minus the overabundance of basil...but since I like basil, I was a happy camper. The only complaint was that the chicken in it wasn't very good at all. Too dry and overcooked = hard to chew pieces of chicken. And there wasn't that much in the dish. My coworkers ordered Panang Curry (pretty spicy and really good), Spicy Basil Fried Rice (really big dish that looked really delicious), and the Garlic Chicken (which my coworker said was really garlic-y and good). All the dishes were priced around the same ($8-10ish). The menu is pretty extensive with lots of different options for meats, vegetarians, rice, and noodle dishes. Overall, I'd be back, but only if I was in the area. I don't know if it's worth going out of your way just to eat here.

This place had the best pad see ew I've ever tasted. Similar to Madam Mam's in Austin, but fresher and less greasy. I also tried their Tom Ka soup and thought it was pretty good (although I like Thai Cottage's better). Our waiter was friendly and provided good service. I took away one star for the location and decor. If you're looking for a surprisingly good Thai meal I would encourage you to give this place a try.

I've been to some amazing Thai restaurants and this was just not one of them. We just flew in from Seattle, saw this place on Yelp, and after reading all the rave reviews, decided to give it a shot. I don't know if we just didn't order the right dishes or what, but the place was just OK. The dishes lacked the fresh, spicy, full flavor that we usually love about Thai food. Nothing horrible, but nothing to write Yelp about.

Let me preface this by saying I know doodly squat about Thai food. It could be that I don't like it, or it could be that I've just yet to have that Duke of New York, A #1 dish that lights a fire in my soul... belly... whatever. All I really know is this: Vieng Thai with a good group of friends (like this past weekend's UYE) is pretty cool. The owner seemed laid back and long after we'd all finished eating, allowed us to take up about a quarter of the restaurant. Honestly, this has to be one of the most unassuming places in town. From the outside, you'd think it was either poser-Thai (the kind that comes mainly out of the freezer or is marginally Thai in that it involves chili sauce, peanuts, and noodles) or it was just a funky name for a pho place. Inside though, is actually fairly nice. Once you get past the disco ball and strobe light, the decorations are in keeping with the food. Heck, there's even a little living room you can sit in. How cush is that? I had shrimp Pad Thai and some soft egg rolls. The egg rolls were a bit salty for me, but the Pad Thai was pretty good. It wasn't too sweet, it wasn't choked in peanuts and the single lime wedge that came with it was just enough to bring out the dish's flavor. Of course, Pad Thai is Thai for Dummies, but I gotta start somewhere, right? I would definitely say this place is good for a lunch with friends. (I'm not too certain how the area would be if it was night. It's a bit industrial, so it might just look icky without being icky.) Prices are okay--a little high in my opinion, but then again, I did eat an appetizer and a dish that's normally intended to be shared. The relaxed nature of the place is evident shortly after walking into the door, so it seems prime for a Saturday, post-errand lunch.

I love Thai food. I love BYOB. It was only a matter of time before I ended up at Vieng Thai. As most of the other reviewers noted, the restaurant is in a more industrial area (some may read this as "shady", but it didn't appear so to me). My husband was a bit worried about going to this part of town, but it was my week to choose a place for "date night". As we pulled up, we noticed nothing but luxury cars parked in front of the restaurant. This wiped the worry off my husband's face. Once inside, we were seated at a two-seater table next to what appeared to either be a 1) waiting room or 2)Thai family's living room. The waitress brought us wine glasses and a corkscrew, and we were off to a happy start. For appetizers, we ordered the Som Tum and the sausage dish. My husband, who grew up not eating any seafood, could pick up the taste of fish sauce in the Som Tum. He wasn't a fan, but I gobbled it up. He loved the Thai sausage, and loved it even more when I squeezed the fresh lime over it and served it to him with the crunchy peanuts. What a combination of flavors! For our main course, we ordered the Panang curry and Pad Kee Mao. We ordered both "Thai Hot" but neither came out spicy. That was the biggest disappointment of the night, because we are huge fans of spicy food! The waitress quickly brought us over the condiment caddy, and we were able to spice our dishes right up. I was particularly a fan of the pickled Thai chilies..really fresh and really hot! Best part of the evening? The bill! A bottle of good wine and a great meal for a modest price. I could not ask for more.

Maybe this place is better for lunch? Although I can't imagine how. I've eaten at a lot of Thai places and this place does not deserve a 5-star rating from anybody. First of all the location: I don't mind that it's located in a seedy strip mall on Long Point. After all, Kanomwan is arguably in one of the worst parts of town, but that didn't affect my rating. It's not just the location though, it's the interior which reminds you of someone's smoke-stained suburban living room circa 1983. The ceiling tiles are loose or broken, the tables are small. Overall it isn't a very pleasant setting. We went on a Friday night. There wasn't a crowd, but the waitstaff seemed to be preoccupied with 10 or more to-go orders. We ordered cold spring rolls as an app. The rice paper was hard, as if they had been sitting out for a while. The peanut sauce was lumpy (but the lumps weren't peanuts) and had an odd flavor. I ordered some glass noodles with chicken, shrimp, and Thai veggies. The portion size was embarrassingly small. There was ONE shrimp in the entire dish. It tasted good, but more like an overcooked noodle mush than anything else. My companion had chicken pad Thai and we were similarly unimpressed. Too sweet, not enough chicken, and too many peanuts. I walked out the door wondering just what in the world people see in this place. There are literally 100 other Thai restaurants in Houston that are much better.

Alright! So attempt #2 at Vieng Thai and as you can see it was an improved visit this time. This time I came with the same co-worker as from my first review of this place and another co-worker. This time I ordered the Green Curry Fried Rice. It was really good! Just a thought though, this isn't one of those Thai places you can come to and they right off the bat tell you to rate how hot you want something. They just default to pretty spicy -- I know my entree definitely was, so spicy in fact that I couldn't finish it all in one sitting and had to pace myself. But overall really tasty, with green beans, chicken, and a little bit of sliced bell pepper. And as an update on the pad thai I ordered from before, my co-worker went ahead and ordered the same thing (despite our last experience) and his turned out perfectly fine -- in fact delicious. No pool of oil on the bottom. I also tried some of my other co-worker's Massamam Curry which had a nice coconut flavor within the curry, but not at all overwhelming. ok, Vieng Thai. Solid 3 stars.

The 'Boat Noodle' is the best noodle dish you will ever have! It's spicy, it's sweet, its tangy and the ingredients they use are so fresh! It's an orgasm in your mouth people. It's definitely a hole in the wall place and would have never even bothered to step in if it wasn't for my boyfriend who is Thai, and yes, he is SPICY! haha okay.. bad joke! Looks are definitely deceiving with this place, but I don't care! The food is DEEEELISH!

Finding a great hole in the wall is almost has good as finding that break out player in fantasy bball. You pay little for it but they out perform their expectations. Vieng Thai does just that. Still on a quest to find "my spot" for thai food in houston, I tried this place out. When I first saw it was on Long Point, I was optimistic cause Long Point speaks hole in the wall. You could easily drive by this place and not even notice it as its in a small strip center. The decor inside is your typical cheesy asian restaurant look. The service is nothing to speak of as it fits the bill. If anything, its better than your avg hole in the wall service. So the food... they passed my very crucial and important test by not using american broccoli in my pad see ew!!! The pad see ew was good, not great, as i've had better but might be the best i've had in houston. They need to put on a little more sauce and the portion was kind of small. My friend had the Red Curry which was quite tasty. It had a nice kick to it that forced her to stop eating it but I gladly licked her dish clean. The ingredients tasted fresh and had a home made feel to it. I feel like they went to the local asian market and whipped these dishes up. I am definitely considering making Vieng Thai a usual spot to satisfy my thai quencher. Prices are cheaper than most thai places and the food taste very home made. So when I went here, I guess I didn't get the memo cause we were the only ones that didn't BYOB. Def another +

Vieng Thai is consistently raved about. But I'm not really sure why. Their tom yum soup is so-so, and their curries aren't anything to write home about. When I'm not feeling picky, it fits the bill. But it doesn't deserve its reputation.

Went here on a recommendation that this was really good Thai food. Didn't really think it was the best per-se, it tasted like normal Thai food. My girlfriends pad Thai had no flavor, and my yam neur wasn't anything to brag about. The soup tasted like it was home made (i guess that's what they were going for?) I just had better Thai at other places...

You have to love some of the iPhone apps without it I would have never came across this place! (too bad the iPhone isn't mine so really I have to give credit to my coworker) Driving down Antoine towards Longpoint, my coworkers begin to converse and ask, "Where is this place?" According to the iPhone it shouldn't be too far. Finally I spot it! It's in a small shopping strip that cause my coworkers to be a bit weary. They didn't want to go in because well a bit on the sketchy side. I reminded them that some of the best places are where you least expect it. This is a place that proves not to judge a book by its cover! We all walked in and to all of our surprise the restaurant was already filled with people. We were seated and looked through the menu. So many options, what to get? I opted for the the egg rolls to start and Pad Thai as my lunch of choice. All of the orders came out and it all looked so good, which means I need to come back here to try it ALL!!! Everyone ate their plates clean, definitely a sign that the food was good. There is a $10 minimum if you want to use your credit card, so plan accordingly.

I've been to here once before, about 7 years ago, back when it was a store and the dining area was tucked in the back, literally a hole-in-a-wall. It was a cold rainy day, and I was so happy to see Tom Yum noodle soup on the menu. Finally, a Thai restaurant that serves my favorite noddle soup!! Last time I had it was in Asia, I can't believe it's so hard to find this dish in Houston. Anyway, back to my noodle soup. It was perfect for the weather, it was spicy, and I can taste all the authentic seasonings in it. It was also drenched in MSG (sigh! minus 1 star for that). Fast forward 7 years later, there's been no reason why I never went back. Well, there is. It's the location. It's not the most convenient part of town for me. But, lately I've been working in this area so yay!! I was surprised when I walked in. The place is no longer a store rather it's a full service restaurant now. And the menu, fancy!! Back then it was just this one-piece paper menu thing. Vieng Thai has come a long way. I ordered the Boat Noodle soup, again one of my favorites! It was perfect. A little tangy, a little spicy, lots of flavor and unfortunately, lots of MSG. I guess some things don't change with time.

Being Thai, I get questioned all the time on where to eat Thai food in Houston. Out of all the restaurants I've visited in H-town, which I believe is quite a bit, I think Vieng Thai is the closest you'll get to authentic Thai cuisine. I usually go there for the Pork Tom Yum noodle soup, as it is quite flavorful. I'm really nit-picky when it comes to authentic Thai dishes, and although Vieng Thai comes close to mimicking the flavors and textures of the originals, it falls a bit short. The Pad See Ew or stir-fried noodles, for example, lacks the seared goodness that is so characteristic of the dish, so the noodles come a bit moist. It's the little details like these that annoy the heck out of me when I come to Thai restaurants in America, but it's to be expected. Nonetheless, do try dishes from the north-eastern ("E-sarn") part of Thailand, like the papaya salad, as I heard the owner is from that region of the country. The menu is well-rounded for those who want to sample a bit of everything Thai. The location isn't in the prettiest side of town, and the overall atmosphere isn't great. Anyhow, give it a shot if you're craving some good Thai food.

I found this place thanks to the iPhone Yelp app. We had the papaya salad, green curry and the Thai omelette. All were excellent. The neighborhood is not very fancy, but we never felt unsafe for ourselves or our property, so don't let that stop you from enjoying this delicious food! The restaurant does not serve alcohol but you can BYOB (Yelp needs a category for this).

The place is a dive, really. Let me just throw it out there. But i could give a fly F@#$...it reminds me of Thailand. So BONUS! But here for the food. I love the food here. It's pretty freaking close to home cooking at best. So I'm all about that! The gaang dang is good and the noodle soups are decent. But what brings me back is just one dish. The Gai Kwa. Such a simple dish but so hard to master. Vieng Thai's version is pretty damn close to how my Mama makes it, so i'm going off of that...so pretty damn good. The som tam's not bad but I make a better version, personally. I've yet to try anything else... Oh wait..the freaking egg rolls. AWESOME!! Not awesome, how big those things are, one bite and it's done? Come on. For that price, give me at least finger sized ones. But i digest. Still pretty good.

Not all of the food at Vieng Thai is perfect... that being said, some of it is. The service has definitely improved over the years, the decor... enh not so much. Luckily I don't go to restaurants for much more than the food and/or service. Oh, its BYOB with no cork fee, and its cheap too.

Oh. My. Goodness. I have seriously been craving Thai food for the longest time and this food fulfilled that empty void. When my sister took me here for the first, I was dubious upon spotting the slightly ghetto sign and the dirty exterior. So was my sister: "Uh... I haven't been here in like, 10 years, so I don't know if it's still good or not." Saying this, I became even more hesitant. BUT THERE WAS NO REASON TO BE! Best Thai food in Houston for a great price. My sister ordered the Stir-fried Egg Noodles and I went with the Pad Thai. I had been wanting to try this popular Thai dish for awhile but never really had the chance to. Vieng Thai's Pad Thai certainly put off a great first impression. The dish was intensely flavorful. The peanut sauce was more nutty than sweet, which was nice. The noodles were interestingly fluffy and had a great texture. Perfectly done. The chicken was well-cooked and moist, and the scrambled eggs strewn throughout the noodles gave the dish a sort of brunch-like feeling which was great, considering my sister and I were technically having 'Sunday brunch.' My sister's Stir-fried Egg Noodles were equally as good. I kept stealing from hers even though there was a healthy portion of food on my own plate. The vegetables were cooked to the point where they were still crispy, not limp. The noodles were thin and delicate; the sauce was perfect- not too heavy handed with the soy sauce as other Asian restaurants tend to do. The only complaint my sister had was that there was only one piece of shrimp in the dish. However, our waiter was a little rude- he never smiled once when spoken to which was a little discomforting. But in the end, it's really the food that matters. Mmm I can't wait to come back here and try their Soft Spring rolls!

It really pains me to give Vieng Thai three stars. Really. I would give the food a 5, for sure. My friend and I agreed that it's some of the best Thai food we've ever had. I had the chicken Pad Thai last night and it was scrumptious! Green onions, noodles, crunchy peanuts, a wedge of lime...mmm! Medium spice was bordering on a bit too hot for me, but it was still tolerable. Portions were reasonable for the price. Not enough for leftovers (for me), though. My friend had the Pad Kee Mao...oh man, I liked it even more than the Pad Thai! Even though the Pad Thai was great, I was extremely jealous and anxiously plotting the next time I could stop by the restaurant to try the Kee Mao. But then... Towards the end of the meal, I happened to glance at the mirrored wall next to my table and noticed something crawling around. Uh, yeah...it was a roach!! OH.MY .GOSH!! The only other time I've ever seen a roach inside a restaurant was at a little dive in Chinatown. I was a little disturbed nonetheless. I know from some family and friends that have worked in restaurants that lots of restaurants battle roach problems. I realize the occasional roach might fly inside (ughhh) from outdoors. This is Houston, after all. Well, let me just say there wasn't just one roach, but I spotted a baby roach, too. And where there's baby, there's momma. So, yeah. Fortunately I was done eating, otherwise I would've lost my appetite. :( My friend actually told our waitress about the roaches and she just said "oh! we just had the pest people come out." Well that sucks! Needless to say, as much as I would love to come back here and get the Pad Kee Mao, I would be very hesitant because I can't really enjoy my meal or even eat when roaches are crawling nearby. :( If you can, more power to you--I envy you. :)

Very good food, very rude waitstaff. This is another review where I feel compelled to point out that I chase flavor above all else, and this place certainly delivers the flavor without much else. I had the Pad Graw Pow and the Red Curry and loved both. Outstanding flavor. Almost my favorite thai place ever, and certainly my favorite in Houston. Ambiance kind of sucks, the waiters are rude, but the flavor is exceptional.

I wouldn't say that I'm a frequent customer, but I've been coming here for several years now. Even back when it used to be a restaurant/video rental/grocery store. The food here is great. I have to admit that the...I'm not sure what it's called on the menu, but in a rough Thai to English translation...Boat Noodle Soup is the best! Its a shame I only make a trip to the place once in a blue moon.

This is some fine Thai food, very small portions and they are likely to poison you with spiciness if they want to, but overall a pretty solid spot in Spring Branch, it is pretty good, not great.

Some of the tastiest Thai food in town! It's kind of in the middle of nowhere, But I think thats partly why I like it so much. The combination of really good food and the fact that its B.Y.O.B. makes it a must for lovers of Thai Food. Oh, and did I mention that the prices are extremely reasonable?

Vieng talk thai... Vieng talk thai good. So let me start with the negatives... This area is kind of ghetto at night. The place is not much to look at. The ceiling on the interior looks like it may fall down and the service was painfully slow. Even after all of that I still loved it! The food was bursting with flavor. We tried the papaya salad and it reinvented the way I think about salads. Cold and spicy with a strong citrus flavor yet sweet as well. We also tried a green curry with chicken. Mmm.. creamy spicy goodness. The spice level was on the verge of almost being too much for me... it got the nose running, but it never over powered the flavors. Let's just say I'll be heading back soon... and by soon I mean today.

Average rating of four stars? Y'all letting me down on my Thai food Houston Yelpers! Few words to describe my experience would be greasy, dry chicken, and overall blandness/lack of flavor on the three dishes we ate. Maybe it was a rough day for this place...:-/

My favorite Thai food in Houston! My favorites are the e sarn sausage with peanuts and fried chiles, the tom kha gai, the som tum, the pad gra prow, and the pad prik king. For curry, I like the panang. Last time we went, I was sick and so I asked our waiter to make everything extra spicy. That is when I found out that I also like their Thai tea, which is extremely rich with coconut milk -- and soothing to a tongue on fire. The restaurant itself is fine, not the nicest, but who cares when the food is so good? For those who find the service rude, I have never had a problem with it -- they may be a little curt but still competent.

MMMM I love this little Thai place. Cheap, fresh, and seriously tasty. My favorite dishes are the Kee Mao (drunken noodles) and the Gang Massaman with beef. Their Thai style papaya salad is also not to be missed. You can bring your own alcohol and there is no corkage fee. We read a lot of reviews on this place before visiting and many folks thought the service was poor. I would definitely disagree. The service has always been helpful and attentive the half dozen times I have been there. Its located in a sketchy looking section of Long Point but there is plenty of parking by the door and the surrounding neighborhood is not as rough as it looks at first glance. Definitely not to be missed!

Most Thai food in Texas is an excercise in your personal knowledge of curries that can be found in most good supermarkets and your tolerance for spice. It is the rare restaurant that can add layers of unctuous flavors to each and every dish, some making you squeem most making you gush with approval. This is Vieng Thai, start with plain surroundings in a suspect neighborhood add ubelievable food and sprinkle in BYOB and what you have is a perfect foodie shrine. Serve on Vieng Thai we solute you!

How could it have taken me so long to go here? The food is the most authentic Thai food I have eaten in Houston. It is a little dark and dingy there and the neighborhood a little scruffy looking, but that didn't really bother me. When you walk in they have the ubiquitous picture of the King and Queen of Thailand in the corner. Seeing that immediately brighten my anticipation that the food was going to be as good as the reviews have been. I decided do takeout rather then eat there. The waiter was very friendly after I said thank you in Thai. I ordered the Thai Papaya Salad, Glass Noodles and Red Curry with beef, medium Thai hot (which IMHO was really Thai mild.) Everything was fresh tasting and flavorful. I will not repeat the positive descriptions of these dishes found elsewhere on this page. Suffice to say, I can't wait to go back and try more dishes. BTW, they also had almost two pages of vegetarian dishes for those of you who do not eat meat or eat very little of it.

I'm sure I'll be flamed by the fanboys, but I feel compelled to put in a lonely low-star review just to balance other people's expectations. I took an out-of-town friend here because of all the great reviews, but I should have waited for a Thai friend to give me the lowdown. We arrived a bit late in the lunch hour, so we know the kitchen might have been limited, but it still seemed like we got whatever was left over rather than what we ordered. I got a scant cupful of food with a large mound of rice; my vegetarian friend got chicken despite asking for tofu. The quality was just above what you'd get in a mall food court. All in all it wouldn't have been the worst experience but it was expensive to boot. My cup of meat and vegetables and pile of rice cost me $7.99. I don't have a huge appetite so it didn't bother me that I got a small portion, but for that price I usually get enough for lunch the next day. Yes, the ambiance is lacking and yes, the service was indifferent, but I don't care about that if the food is good and/or a good value. Got neither here.

Hells yes. Don't mess with other Thai restaurants--this is it. I had some red curry and my sinus problem is cured. Also had a Thai tea with cream, . . perfect! My sister had some chicken thing. .. should have noted the name. It was good, I had a few bites of it. The place itself is a little dumpy (not so much dumpy, . it needs a facelift--the decor is stuck in the 80s) and the service is meh, but the food more than makes up for it.

We read the good reviews, love Thai food, just moved to the area, and couldn't be more disappointed with this place. The first time we thought it was what we ordered. I had the Green Curry. It was the worst green curry I've ever had. Second time I ordered Pad Thai. It was ok, but I wouldn't get it again. It tastes like a jar of peanut butter melted over some noodles. In fact, I don't think I'll give this place a third chance. Yuk!

This place is a small hole in the wall in a beat down strip mall, but I was encouraged by the reviews here so I went. I was expecting terrible service, but our waiter was over-the-top helpful and friendly, so the whole experience was positive. I've had Thai food all over town and this place ranks in the top 3 - everything we ordered was outstanding. We will definitely be back and I can't wait to introduce my friends to this place.

This place is in a sketchy little strip center and definitely nothing fancy but it's always got a lot of patrons and the food is really tasty. The parking can be a bit of a challenge and it isn't a large place so sometimes you have to wait a bit but the service is good and it's super affordable. Can't beat BYOB places either!

  • Kiefer D.

From the outside, this place doesn't look like anything fancy. Well it's nothing fancy, but the ambiance has a nice cozy feel to it. When I went during dinner to avoid traffic, there was a one man band entertaining everyone. I want to say he was the best part about my time there. The food was nothing mind blowing, but it was not bad either. I wish I had better things to say, but the food was subpar. I had the chicken satay for appetizers, which was nice with the peanut sauce. For my entree, I had the chicken pad thai. Now I can't say it is bad but I have had better at other Thai restaurants. I would come here again and give it a try since it seemed like a very popular place. There were a good amount of people there. So I must have ordered the wrong thing. For now, I will still with 3 stars.

Definitely a must try place if you love Thai food. Ambiance is nice and a little cheesy in a good way (disco ball for nighttime performances?) considering the strip mall is what you'd expect on Long Point: this place isn't wasting money on overhead. I had the sausage appetizer and it was fantastic. Plenty of flavor, like nothing I've had before, and good heat from cooked peppers served on the side. Presentation was even impressive with cilantro that added a nice twist to the flavor, too. I had a chili pork dish with white rice on the side and it was almost as good as the sausage. I think the pork might have been a tad over cooked, but who cares, I still wolfed it down and enjoyed it. My other concern was that it was sweeter than I was expecting. Perhaps I misread the menu, but it was pretty well written. Oops. No matter, good place, good prices, high quality ingredients and fast service (I was there at off peak times) with a friendly waiter. This certainly seems like a place that may people love, if the disco ball is any indication.

Wanted some papaya salad but ended up with creepy crawlers. We ordered papaya salad, spring rolls and boat noodles. I was just digging into the meal but decided to grab some of the sauces for flavoring. That's when the roach appeared. I called the waiter over to inspect. He just grabbed a napkin from our table squashed it on the table and said nothing. He then proceeded to hand us the bill. I just paid to get out. I won't be coming back.

Decently good Thai food, but nothing spectacular. Parking is a little tough because there's only so many spots available in front of the strip mall, and many of them have no parking signs or are reserved for other businesses. We ordered the papaya salad, sausage appetizer, spicy eggplant dish, and pork pad thai. Everything was average besides the spicy eggplant dish, which I was pleasantly surprised by how good the flavor was. We did have an incident with a crawling insect on the table (not a cockroach but unsettling enough). The waiter moved us over to another table and apologized. The people I was with shrugged it off and said it was nothing worse than you encounter at food stalls in Asia--true, but not really what you want to see in a sit-down restaurant. The manager gave us a free iced tea and 50% off the check, which was more than generous.

I love me some Thai food, but I really feel like this place is maybe a smidge above just okay. It's really a 3.25-3.5 star if you're not into rounding. First off, the parking is atrocious. It's located in a fairly seedy part of town in a shady looking tiny strip mall. The lot is completely filled by patrons of the nearby Mexican restaurant, and when I went on a Sunday morning there were several other patrons who had to park across the street. That would be no problem, except that there is not very convenient street parking here. People were trying to park in lots for other businesses that clearly had tow away signs. We didn't want to risk it and almost left. We ended up lucking out and getting street parking a block or so away. I will admit that the inside of this place far outweighs the outside aesthetic. It actually is pretty spacious and fairly inviting. We were placed at a long table that was able to seat 12 people (with some adjustments). I ordered the soft spring rolls as appetizers and the chicken pad thai. My friend got the chicken suki - a spicy chicken noodle soup. The pad thai was just okay. It was a dime a dozen kind of food, and definitely nothing special. The chicken was decently seasoned, but everything else just so standard. I had a taste of the chicken suki which was slightly better, but the broth definitely was not as spicy as advertised. I also ordered a Thai tea which was pretty delicious. No complaints there. After your meal, you go up to pay which was nice because it allowed us to split the 12 person bill with no real hassle. Props for that. I see that other reviewers had issues with paying, so maybe that means they've learned from past errors. In short, I really wouldn't go out of my way to come here. It was decent food, but just really nothing I haven't had better at other places.

I wasn't too pleased with this place. I ordered the chicken pad thai and it came out very bland. I wanted to try their curry but they mentioned all their curry is spicy so I assume they are pre-made if they can't offer you different spice levels like most thai places do. My friend did say the curry was pretty good. We also ordered the cheese rolls but it was stuffed with melted cheddar cheese. We also ordered thai teas but had to ask the lady to add more half and half. I have had much better but perhaps they specialize in other dishes. I also found it slightly odd for a thai restaurant to be playing country music.

For 2 years... 2 YEARS... Vieng Thai has been on the short list of places to try. Every conversation revolving around where we should go eat had this BYOB Thai joint nestled in its folds. Tossed back and forth in the narrowing process only to be shoved back down the list, replaced by a more frequented standby elsewhere. When you are an adult, and people don't know what to buy for you, you get wine. Drinking at home over leftovers didn't really strike our fancy, so we packed it up and headed into this super sketch area of Spring Branch. The establishment was baron, but it gave me a chance to enjoy the very stereotypical decor with flameless candles flickering about the dim room. Oddly, it gave me the indication that something awesome was about to happen.. in my mouth. AND IT DID! We popped a bottle, sans cork fee, and gazed into the extensive menu. We had both read the reviews for Vieng Thai at nauseum, so the ordering process went fairly quickly. -Spring Rolls -Paneng Curry Chicken- Per the waiters rec. -Pad Kee Mao "Drunken Noodles" Chicken Simply----the food was Thai. It had the sweet, the spice and the texture of what is great about Thai food. The Paneng was a touch greasy and a touch too floral but I enjoyed the Pad Kee Mao immensely. It took me a moment to get used to the texture of these noodles but once I was able to adjust the flavor all started to settle on my pallet. The spice was snuffed to a mere ember thanks to the basil, using the slippery noodles as a neutral base. We toasted with our final glass of vino over great company, delicious food, and hospitable service.

I think the food here is pretty good. It is one of the top 5 tasty thai food restaurants I've been in Houston. However sanity is not the greatest here. My friend and I got here today and started off with 2 cups of ice cold lime water. Then we saw that there was a black bug in my friends water cup. We told the waiter but he didn't even apologize, just took the cup, and brought back another cup of water. Again, no apology. Other than that the food is very good here. I always get chicken thai fried rice and my friend always gets the pad see ewe. They're both delicious if you don't think about the sanitation process. I don't know if I would be back though after see that bug in the water cup.

Overdue review! Came here some time ago just to simply try out the place. Didn't order much, just a Thai tea, Shrimp Pad Thai, and the Red Curry Chicken. The pad Thai was just okay, but the red curry was what really made me give this place a really good rating! So yummy!!

Absolutely the best place i have ever been to The food is so so so good I could just keep on eating They had the best spring roll, Loved their red curry, ginger chicken Everything is amazing I am definitely gonna be back and if you haven't tried U are missing out on awesome thai food P. The Boat Noodles has made me a fan of Vieng Thai! First time ever have I heard of and tried the rice noodles with mini fish balls, thin slices of meat (beef/ pork? not sure....) some sort of Asian veggies and lots of bean sprouts, in this herbal, slightly acidic brown broth; Man oh Man! It is delicious!! Besides the Boat Noodles, Penang Curry is really good as well. In reddish-orange-colored creamy curry sauce that is not too spicy, about 7-8 pieces of medium-sized shrimp and some chopped green beans make a relatively small portion, but the whole thing just tastes great! Other dishes that I have tried, including the pork sausages, chicken in sweet chili sauce, and a pork salad(?) that is served warm, are a-okay. Anyways, try the Boat Noodles! Nom nom nom :) Be cautious that location might be sketchy; to avoid unnecessary risks, get the orders To Go and enjoy the yummy Thai foods at your own places!

Okay so u know how they say stick with what u know?? I have a thai place i frequent but had heard such good things i wanted to try some to go for lunch. Tom kha and papaya salad. Salad was okay but just that okay. Ugh what a pity that soup was salty salty did I say salty!! No flavor almost brought it back, rice was not jasmine rice but cheap rice, paid over 20. First and last like they say. Shame,

Food: 4 star Service: 2 star BYOB: 5 star Crazy to see how mixed the reviews are for this place. It's a hole-in-the-wall Thai restaurant that I can't seem to get enough of. I've dined in and taken it to-go. My favorite dishes: Paneng Curry, Spicy Catfish, Boat Noodle soup and Pad See Ew noodles Wouldn't order again: Papaya salad This place gets pretty packed so I'd recommend getting there earlier. It's better for small groups since they have limited seating. Might not be the best service but the BYOB sure makes up for it!

Love the food here!!! They recently renovated the place so it's a little less "Hole in the wally". My favorites are Beef num tok salad (it's served warm), drunken noodle, green curry, shrimp and eggplant salad (also served warm), fried tilapia. Great thing is you can bring your own wine and beer. We are regulars here and love coming here when we have a thai craving!!

I got the pad Thai and it was okay. It was very dry and not much flavor. The price was okay but it would be nice if the had soup and spring roll. Place is really old and dirty too! They could definitely try harder to make the food better.

Sometimes I take a leap of faith, but end up getting burned. I should've trusted in the other reviewers about the terrible service. The food was actually above average for Thai. Chicken wings, Tom Yum soup, boat noodles, and pad see ew were all tasty. I think I might be in love their pad see ew. The green curry fried rice was spicy as hell, but that flavor was incredible. This is what I imagine Anthony Bourdain is craving when he complains that a dish lacks heat. The portions are generous, too. I was content with my meal until it was time to pay. Our waiter said they only accept up to 2 credit cards. Um, but we have 7 people! This isn't Chinatown- and we racked up a sizeable bill from all the food we ordered. He was rather dismissive and uncooperative about it. FUNNIEST PART- and I can't believe no other Yelpers have mentioned this- the check was written in Thai. To our foreign eyes, it was scribbles and a mysterious numeric total. We didn't know how much each person owed, which matters when there are so many appetizers, soups, and rounds of drinks involved. We also didn't know that gratuity was already added until I explicitly asked. I don't disagree with the automatic gratuity inclusion for large parties, but trying to sneak it in comes off as scummy. Look, I'm all for learning about new cultures and living in harmony, but THIS IS AMERICA. It's ridiculous to hand us a check with no English words on it and tell us to figure it out on our own. In the end, they allowed us to pay separately at the register using credit cards. I guess at this point, they just wanted us to GTFO instead of sitting around trying to figure out where to get cash. It breaks my heart that I can never have that pad see ew again, but I gotta stick to my principles.

I'm posting this review because I really just love Vieng Thai more and more each time I visit. I recently branched out from my typical som tum (papaya salad) and laarb gai (ground chicken salad) go-to and got the plaa pad fed (spicy catfish). I am not exaggerating when I say that the plaa pad fed is the absolute best preparation of catfish I have had. Since having it several months ago I have introduced the dish to Thai food veterans and newbies alike. Everyone who tries it leaves the meal agreeing that the catfish was the best dish. It is not too spicy at all but more savory and complex. The catfish is lightly fried and accompanied with an intimidatingly fiery looking sauce (don't let this scare you) and dried basil leaves. Try it. You'll love it. Especially with an ice cold beer brought by you from home! (Love that BYOB!)

Worst Thai food I've ever had. Panang curry was unrecognizable as curry. Shrimp had shells left on. Don't eat here if you like Thai food.

This place was touted as being much more authentic than most, so my co-workers and I jumped on this opportunity. I ordered the Green Curry Fried Rice (with chicken). It was OK, but it didn't have a lot of spice (and there was no obvious option to get it spicier). The thing that really stands out is the lack of meat in this dish. The cuts of chicken were fairly large, so after a few bites you are left with nothing but a huge mound of vegetable infused rice. The restaurant looks much better than the one we'd gone to, previously, but it still seems a little dank. The staff is nice, albeit not very warm and welcoming. You should definitely try it, if you're nearby. As for me, I'm going to go back to the place I know and look for some spots.

I was really surprised, and not in a good way, after our lunch on Sunday. A group of us were meeting there and I called them to see how busy they were and where we could park if the lot was full. The person who answered basically said they were too busy and I have to figure out parking.... well okay, I get that. I was just curious, and clearly this is not the place for warm, fuzzy service. I'm not expecting this, ever, but sadly this just set the tone for a very less-than-average meal. We arrived, after parking two parking lots away, and were seated easily; many open tables and it did not appear busy. However, we did not get any service for more than 10 minutes and I had to get someone's attention. All the servers looked annoyed to say the least. Busy.. where? it was confusing. We ordered our food and then any time we needed something, like silverware, we had to wait and then ask other people because the server had forgotten. The food we ordered was okay, but barely that; what really disappointed me was the quality of the beef - both in the salad, and in the curries. The beef was stringy, overcooked, and had a very 'off' taste. So disappointing because this restaurant was so delcious once upon a time. No excuse for horrible beef, seriously. I have no intention whatsoever of returning. There are too many better Thai restaurants, and others even have decent service.

Food is good, but not outstanding. I live in the neighborhood and have ordered almost everything on the menu at least once, but every time, I think to myself that the food at Nidda Thai in Montrose or at Tony Thai in Chinatown is just as good, if not slightly more flavorful. A result of too much press? Higher food costs bringing things down? I am not sure, but I hope they're able to return to their once more vibrant flavors so that they stick around in the neighborhood.

I am really in love with this place, these days. I have been 3 times in the last month and a half. They actually keep all ingredients on hand for the Green Papaya salad - so many Thai places have it on their menu amd I have topped going because they never have it. the eggplant is amazing and all 3 Curries are done right. This restaurant uses traditional Lao-style recipes amd they don't skimp on the heat. I highly recommend Vieng Thai. The only thing I woukd mention is you may want to carpool, as parking is limited.

We love the shopping at IKEA but wasn't feeling lunch in the cafe. So we checked Yelp and saw Vieng Thai rated at 3.5 stars. When we went there (on a Tuesday) the place was just getting packed, which is always a good sign. After a bit of a wait, we flagged down the waiter and gave them our order. The spring rolls were pretty tiny for 3.99. We are talking maybe the length of my pointer finger. Only 3. It probably doesn't hurt to make them slightly bigger (ok how about twice the size!). The garlic pork with rice was very good. Meat was tender, flavorful, and well balanced. It was one of those plates you wish there were more. The pad Thai (w/chicken) was disappointing. It was mainly all noodles. The meat was nonexistent. The bits of chicken that did surface were dry. Usually comes with a nicer presentation. It was pretty bland and tasteless. For a 3.5 star establishment was not good enough. Adding beef ($1) should not add to the price either, only shrimp. Perhaps there are better things on the menu like the pad see ew or the curry, but next time we may just opt for Ikea instead. At least kids eat free Tuesday @ IKEA!

This is a hole in the wall place and I love Thai food! My boyfriend has been here before but it was my first. We ordered the spicy catfish, cheese rolls, fish cakes, and pad Thai. Cheese rolls were different then what I've tasted before. Spicy catfish has a good flavor to it but it had too much sauce which made the fired catfish soggy. Fish cakes you just can't go wrong. Average Thai food I've had better.

What happened to the amazing Thai food that I had last year? Just recently revisited and found all my favorite dishes have been altered to the point of unrecognizable. The amazing fish sauce and shrimp paste base is gone. If anybody knows where the former chef is or which restaurant they are in, please let me know. It seems that two of the Thai restaurants I've been to two days ago (Thai Gourmet) and today (Songkran) are diluted version of what the original Vieng Thai flavors had. Please reply if you know the whereabouts of the chef. I need my Thai food!

This place was recommended to us and I was grossly disappointed. The waiter took forever to pay attention to us, I was rushed through the order and our food was not delivered at the same time so my salad came well after all other food. The food itself was too salty throughout. Would not recommend.

I tried again and wanted to like it as our friends were raving about how good it is. I have to wonder what in the world they were thinking. The chicken curry was not even recognizable as a curry and had less heat than a cold spring roll, the chicken coconut soup was thin and sour, the minute amount of Thai cucumber salad was tasteless, as were the peanut sauces that seemed to have had all the roast peanut flavour extracted somehow. There was no pork saté, only limp chicken, and even the much lauded papaya noodles had all the excitement of a damp dish rag. We also got handed the bill before we asked and were told to leave. I had to go home and make some Thai food to remind myself what it should taste like.

Tried this place last night with the siblings... Because it had more stars than the other Thai place close by... Small restaurant with an cozy interior. It actually felt like you were in someone's house because of all the wood. We were greeted promptly and sat. Staff is very attentive and were running around serving food, cleaning tables, and keeping cups filled. I felt like eating normal Thai restaurant staples that night. So we ordered pad Thai with chicken, massaman curry, papaya salad, fried whole tilapia, and fried chicken wings. I wanted to order the sausage (my fav) but I saw a picture posted on yelp and it didn't look appetizing. All the food was ok... Nothing special. The curry and papaya salad were a bit on the sweet side. The pad Thai had the perfect amount of "wetness" ( I hate super soggy noodles) but they were bland too me. The sauce on the fish (which we ordered on the side) was good. Chicken wings were also good nothing special just fried chicken but that's why it's great. Brother also ordered Thai tea and he said it was good. All in all good place. I liked the service but the food was nothing to write home about. I would return but it's not a place I crave.

This place is very overrated. If you think Pad Thai is the quintesential Thai dish, this place may seem reasonable. However, if you are Thai, have been to Thailand, or have eaten proper Thai food, this place is a dissapointment. The basic Thai dishes I had there lacked the proper ingredients to give the food the delicious Thai blend of flavor.

After reading rave reviews of Vieng Thai and a short distance from my work, I came here with a coworker to get my Thai craving fix on. Thai cuisine is heavily influenced by Indian spices and flavours, which is evident in its famous green, red, and yellow curries. You can definitely taste all the different spices and curries from each dish at Vieng Thai. Fried fish cakes with sweet dipping sauce was interesting. Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Flat Noodles) was delicious. The Crispy Catfish covered in curry sauce was crunchy good with slivers of green beans. Even though the dishes are a bit greasier than I prefer, its expected when your ordering any dish with the word FRIED in it. I'd pass on the Thai tea, but everyone should try something once before judging.

A good Thai place to go to any time of the day. This place doesn't close from 3pm to 5pm like most of Thai restaturants in Houston and vicinity do. Plus, they serve pretty authentic Thai comfort food such as a variety of Thai noodle soup.

I'm all about "authentic" flavors and this place is spot on. Their cuisine is more central Thaliand/Bangkok style so keep that in mind. the husband and i shared the following: Chicken Larb - Can't say i've ever seen it served this way, very liquidy and very warm- it tasted great but lacked a bit of the fresh lime flavor in the sauce Drunken Noodles (pad kee mao) - "don't judge a book by it's cover" - when I first saw it, I was expecting something bland and flavorless. SO WRONG I WAS! Pad Phrik something with Chicken - had a nice smokey flavor but not too over powering. you could actually taste the kaffir leaves in this dish. overall, all three dishes were great and each had very distinct flavors. don't be afraid of the neighborhood and don't go here looking for ambiance. straight up - good authentic thai food.

I heard great things about this place so I went with a friend to check it out. The food was terrible--sickly sweet and vinegary with huge, unexplained amounts of raw celery. It was like nothing I have ever had in a restaurant, and not in a good way. I don't understand, maybe this restaurant used to be good? But not any more.

Both times we've visited this restaurant the staff has been incredibly rude to us, making it clear that we were unwelcome. Once they actually made us get up and give our table to other patrons who had just arrived, and making us wait for an additional 10 minutes (we'd already been there for 20) before we were reseated. Then we waited an hour and a half for our food. Mine arrived cold, and he got.... something? It wasn't the yellow curry that he'd ordered. Not worth it.

Thai food is one of my favorites and I have to say I was a bit disappointed. The papaya salad was actually very well made and delicious. One of the best I've had in Houston. However, the rest of their food was just too greasy and the portions were inadequate. The curries had oil drops scattered all throughout. Higher quality thai food just does not have this.

  • James E.

Reading some of the other reviews, the place sounded like it might be some charming, no frills but solidly authentic restaurant. But no-it's actually just a complete dump, with very average food and a waiter who clearly would rather be somewhere else. A television is showing the news with the sound on, there's a disco ball on the ceiling and a Samuel Adams neon beer sign even though they're BYOB (all screams Thai doesn't it?). The place has not had a good cleaning in decades-afraid to think what the kitchen looks like. Just 3 other tables were seated about 9pm on a Saturday night. It's reading all these 4/5 star reviews only to find complete disappointment that is making me lose faith in Yelpers...

Exceptional Thai food!! What this restaurant may lack in ambiance and service is totally made up for in the food. When I was there last they had a little 3 piece acoustic band in the corner just to provide some background music. While I can't say that this made my dining experience any better, it definitely didn't hurt. The Drunken Noodles and Papaya Salad are must trys here. This place is completely out of the way for me, but I don't mind it knowing that I am going to get to eat some great food. Service is definitely lacking, but my experiences with service here have not been as seemingly terrible as the other other reviews written. I would definitely give this place 5 stars if the ambiance and service were better. Bottom Line: If you are trying to figure out whether or not this restaurant is worth the drive, save yourself some time and just go give it a shot.- You will not be disappointed in the food.... Don't forget to BYOB!

I've been here twice and both experiences have been average at best. Part of any meal to me is service, and I wasn't too impressed with my most recent service experience here. The first time I went here, I was in a large group and my food was totally adequate but nothing special. This most recent time, I went with regulars who love this place. When we sat down, we looked over our menu. Because our friends are regulars, the people at the restaurant knew what they wanted and went ahead and made it. We ordered and then our friends' food came out immediately. They were finished eating by the time our food even arrived. Our friends were quite annoyed, but the waiter didn't seem to care. My pad thai was good, but the same as other places I've been. My husband had the Pad woon sen and it was good, but not very filling. I tried it and liked it. The interior is dark and a bit strange. I think I saw someone's living room in the back corner. It's like grandma's lounge in a restaurant. I am glad some people love this place and if I lived nearby, I could see getting pad thai here sometimes, but it's nothing to make a special trip for.

Vieng Thai is our go-to Thai place. My husband and I are total "foodie" i.e. "eaters" and LOVE most of everything Vieng Thai serves up. There service isn't always the best but you don't go there for that. I would skip the Pad Thai and go for something you haven't had before, it's all soooo good! Plus, BYOB with no corkage fee, holler!

Really fantastic Thai food. Best chicken wings ever! Their papaya salads are delicious - they're not afraid of flavor. It tastes fresh and is chock full of lime and fish sauce. It has long beans, tomatoes and now, you can add salted black crabs for an extra $1, which is a no-brainer. It's really the best papaya salad we've had in Houston, hands down. Their Pad Thai with vegetables and tofu - delicious. Most pad Thai is basically dry noodles with meat and sprouts sprinkled in top. The pad Thai here has a great sauce with fresh vegetables. Every vegetable lover should give it a try. The eggplant salad is also great - perfect for hot weather days. The green curry with chicken is also excellent. It's common that a Thai restaurant will let you choose your level of spiciness. This restaurant does not do that but you should trust them. They get it right. Reasonable prices and quick service. I gladly make the drive from Galveston.

Good, but not remarkable Thai food. Reasonably priced and friendly service, but nothing outstanding about it. I'm very surprised it showed up on Alison Cook's Top 100. If I lived close, I'd probably pick up food from here to take home and eat, but I don't think I'll be making any special trips in the future.

I have not been to this place in a while now and to start off the best dishes there are the Pad-see-ew, Fried rice and the boat-noodles. For me I'm a sucker for Pad-see-ew and if you make it good you've got a returning customer without a doubt. They finally remodeled and got new dining tables and chairs which was great because it looked really unorganized before. The only downside to it is that I think they put too much msg so occasionally I'll get headaches after my meal but other than that, feel welcome to try their food!

I've came to this restaurant since I was a little girl. I never came back when a couple months ago I went with my mom and her friend to eat boat noodle soup, that's all I ever came for because it really is the best. I was really into my soul, until I found a roach in my boat noodle soup. It was a pretty big size. I automatically lost my appetite, was in such disgust, I was angry I told the waiter and she didn't know what to do. My food wasn't even complimentary. So watch out for any bugs in our soup. Luckily I look at what I put in my mouth before I eat it.

ZERO stars!! Has to be the absolute WORST thai food in Houston!! TBH I'm surprised at the number of rave reviews. The reviews are what led me to try this place but if this is your go to for Great Thai Food, then heed my advice and venture out of the bubble that is Spring Branch. I realize that restaurants may have an off day so I gave it a few tries as I really wanted it to be good, for convenience sake, but alas... no such luck. Oh and another thing... the smell in this place is wretched... grease trap, sewer... IDK but not pleasant to say the least!

My bf brought me here for date night and honestly, the place does not look nice from the outside. It's shady and the strip looks dirty and old but by the amount of nice cars parked outside, we could tell this place was really popular. The inside is pretty and quaint, with a good amount of seating. We LOVE thai food and we always order the yellow curry and pad see ew wherever we go. However this time, we decided to order the panang curry and still stick with the pad see ew. The panang curry was absolutely delicious. I don't have a single complaint about it. I liked how they didn't use that many veggies and only stuck to the green beans because it wasn't overpowering the curry flavor. It had the perfect balance. The pad see ew was amazing as well. I'm glad they use chinese broccoli because a lot of places use regular broccoli. It tasted very authentic. We also ordered the crispy wontons which are filled with fish balls. They were good, but nothing extraordinary. The pricing was great and affordable compared to other Thai restaurants. The whole bill came to about 26 bucks before tipping. We also did take out recently and ordered the same entrees but added a tom kha soup. Personally, I didn't like the soup because I felt like it was very light and watery and I prefer my tom kha thicker. It also lacked spices. Everything else was delicious and we will be back!

I came in on a Friday night with a group of 10 and it was super crowded. The staff was running around like crazy but I can appreciate a lean staff, especially in a small family run establishment. It is a BYOB place and I needed a wine glass for the bottle of wine we brought and couldn't flag down a waiter. I ended up just going up to the counter to get one myself, which I am totally ok with. I was with a group of 10 people, and we ordered a long list of menu items. We got a few currys, a couple panangs, pad thai, pad see ew (sp?) and some other things I can't remember. It was all delicious. Every single dish. I have been back since and have not been disappointed. They do not take AmEx and only take 3 credit cards for big groups. We played credit card roulette for the bill since there were 10 of us, which was no big deal because it was less than $200 total and we were stuffed. Overall a terrific value in a very casual and low key place. Perfect for a group and awesome that its BYOB.

super tasty and very reasonable pricing! I always get the druken noodles, basil beef, and thai omelette. The crispy catfish is really good but its not good when you order togo, so if you dine in make sure you order that one too. The place is very small and cozy and its BYOB. The staff is very nice. I live really close, so i order out pretty often since its so convenient. Don't let the outside appearance scar you away. Its in a run down shopping center, but the food is worth a try =)

Best Thai food I had in Houston and it's fairly cheap. The boat noodle and the the curries are good. And it's byob!

The best Thai food in Houston. It's a hole in the wall and the area is a little scary at night but the food is wonderful. We love their crispy rolls, red curry and pad see ew. It gets pretty crowded Friday and Saturday nights so be prepared for a wait since it's not a big place. FYI, it's BYOB.

If you miss Thailand, just visit Vieng Thai and it'll help ease the pain. :) The only complaint I have is - their dishes tend to be too oily. Dishes I recommend: Sweet Chili Fried Rice Tiger Cry Lard Salad Boat Noodle Make sure you ask for their hot sauce where they will bring you 3 different spices. The one with the floating jalapenos are my favorite but it may not be your fave.

GREASY...in a good way for me. (i associate it with..authentic. haha) pad thai (4/5) green curry (4/5) jungle curry (2/5) - not a fan. tomato based...the flavors kind of weirded me out wish they had sticky rice!!

Vieng Thai is the best Thai restaurant in Houston, and I'm not the only one who thinks so. The food here is incredible, the prices are low, the people here are friendly, the atmosphere is comfortable, and it is BYOB. I'm not sure what else you need to know. After having most of the menu I would be comfortable saying "no matter what you order, its going to be good, and if you even remotely like Thai food, you'll love whatever you order".

Was a regular here several years ago, but I think the quality has dropped a bit. Ordered papaya salad, pad grapow (holy basil) chicken and a pork laab. The laab was solid, but the papaya salad was poorly balanced and overly fishy. No bite to it, either. The grapow didn't use holy basil and the "chicken" was basically a thick mush -- just really bizarre. As a dish it tasted OK, but the flavor profile was completely off from its namesake. The overly fried egg accompanying it was served in a sad little ramekin on the side, not in a semi-gooey mess over the ground meat. Otherwise the service was super friendly and prompt, which is probably the only thing that's improved in the past few years.

Ok place if you're in the mood for Thai and want to get a quick meal. Average food and we found the servers friendly and kind. There were a number of Thai and other Asian patrons at the restaurant so that was a good sign as well. The prices are a little higher than I thought the quality merited but are within the norm for a sit down restaurant.

BYOB, cheap, and good food, what's there not to like? This place gets pretty crowded during weekend dinner hours. The only place in Houston that has sator in its menu. I've yet to try a dish that doesn't taste good, but my favorite is the catfish with egg and curry sauce, green curry or sweet chilli fried rice, garlic pork, stir fried flat noodle with beef, and pork omelete.

If you haven't tried this place make a point of stopping in, it's always great! Pros: *Everything I've ordered on the menu has been great *Suggestions: Boat Noodle, Tom Yum, Pad Kee Mao, Thai Basil Rice, any of the curry's *This place is also BYOB so enjoy Cons: *The shopping center and outside look sketchy but don't let this deter you *Some people seem to think the service sucks, sometimes it better then others but the food is always good *All of the dishes are good but are pretty greasy. If your on a diet you may have to take a pass

The food is fantastic, but I'd think it were the early 90's if I couldn't tell the tv was a flat panel. Very old decor/carpet and sometimes slow service, but this is my favorite Thai food in town.

  • Sam D.

Ambiance: Sub par. Dirty carpet. One random plant, disco ball, and weird LED lighting. A TV, which did have the game on so I was very pleased with that. Strange mirror panels that were located on the East wall when coming in through the front door. Food: Good. I can see why this place has such high reviews. Service: I wish the place was GYOP (Get your own plate) instead of BYOB because I think i could have done a better job serving myself. I believe that a restaurant has three very crucial components that make it a restaurant; service, ambiance, and food. With that being said, I wanted to talk about the service here. My service was terrible. No one was really available to seat me. So, I seated myself. It took about 10 minutes for someone to get me a menu. My order was taken first and then the waiter asked what I wanted to drink. My food arrived at a satisfactory time, around 15 minutes, but with no water. Another waiter came by and asked me what I wanted to drink. I told him water. I waited another 10 minutes for the water to arrive. It arrived only 3/5 full. (see I can be optimistic) So far, I had waited a total of 35 frustrating minutes for my meal to begin. I ate my food in about 5 minutes. I really enjoyed the food. I am not a big fan of Thai food however, this restaurant may have changed my mind. The check took another 10 minutes to arrive. I received the check, however there was no ink in the pen. Rather than wasting another 10 minutes of my life waiting (no pun intended), I decided to go to the counter and ask for one. I tipped 10% although I really didn't want to tip at all. I do not think that I will be returning....

the Thai food is really just ok. not nearly spicy enough. personally, i think Thai gourmet is WAY better. but what does keep me coming back here is the BOAT NOODLES. its really good. if you haven't had it, its like a tangier spicier version of Vietnamese PHO. this dish along is 5 STARS! service isn't great. unwelcoming is the norm, but they can be rude most other days... it bugs me, but not enough to not come back for that yummy noodle soup.

This place looks scary inside and out but the food is great! Only reason I did not give it 5 stars was the old age and lack of cleanliness. If the dining area looks bad who knows what the kitchen looks like. But non the less the food was very good.

This is one of those places that I had just been hearing about for years. Before I decided to check it out, I had read about the place in numerous reviews. Vieng Thai is a hidden gem located in an area not associated with 5 star dining. Don't let the location fool you, this place is top notch. On my first visit, I decided to try the Red Curry. It blew my mind. Since then I have gone back a dozen times and recommended the place to everyone I know. The Red Curry is made with coconut milk, lemon basil, and a spicy curry sauce. These ingredients make for the PERFECT fusion of sweet, sour, and spicy!! You have your choice to add chicken, beef, or pork. I am some what of a curry fanatic and have tried various aspects of the dish ALL OVER. Vieng Thai makes the absolute best Red Curry that I have come to discover so far. I've also tried their Green Curry and Jungle Curry. In my opinon, they do not compare to the Red. The Jungle Curry is too spicy for me and the Green just does not have the strong flavor like the Red Curry. The location and interior is a bit quaint, yet people pick this place to dress up nice and host lavish dinner parties. It's very cozy and the atmosphere really makes me feel comfortable when I eat there. Vieng Thai is also BYOB! They will gladly bring you wine glasses and there is no corking fee.

Coming from the west coast to Houston and having been to Thailand, I have had tastier Thai food. The service was pretty good and I would really liked to have rated it higher, but the food didn't stand out. We asked for our green curry to be thai hot and it was barely medium. Our medium dishes were mild. Hopefully, they will change their food to make it more authentic.

Nothing really to bash about this restaurant but the food only. It wasn't really worth the drive from downtown Houston and there's plenty better Thai restaurants around already. Just want to give it a try due to the Yelp reviews. I'm not the GURU of Thai cuisines or anything but I eat A LOT of them around here in Austin and whip up some Thai dishes occasionally. The menu is pretty much variations on sweet chili sauce or nothing to really "scream" about. Madam Mam (although Americanized) in Austin could beat this place down like nothing. Even Chon Som which is ok in my book would OWN this place. The only thing I would praise about this restaurant is carrying papaya salad on their menu. Now let's get to what I have ordered here. Their E-Sarn sausage was plain ole sausage without the saltiness, some roasted peanuts, dried fried red chilis, cilantro, dried cabbage (not pickled) and a lime. Not worth it mind you. My friend ordered the Green curry. If you've eaten curry before, you know what kind of consistency to look for in a good curry to be eaten with rice. His was very watery. The flavor is there but it isn't flavorful. Not encouraging to use curry powder but more flour to thicken it up would be nice, even cornstarch wouldn't hurt either! Since it's new place, I try to eat new dishes just to experience something "new." The menu wasn't extensive so I took that as, "Hmm... they must be confident about their dishes then." Oooh la la la, out it comes simply flat rice noodle fried with sweet chili sauce with veggies thrown in. Barely saucy. I've had many variations and this one is simply, meh. Service was ok. Didn't bother to refill our drinks. Atmosphere wasn't bad or anything. Probably would come here again. Not that they were bad in general. Food just wasn't "Thai" enough for me. I rather eat Fried intestine than mediocre Thai food :D

Best Thai restaurant in Houston? Maybe....but I cannot come to that conclusion yet. I did enjoy other places better on my first experience but I'm willing to come back. And I've still yet to eat at Kanomwan. And lazily, I've yet to review Thai Gourmet although I might write that up next. The restaurant isn't in the most convenient of locations. I really don't do much in this area so the only reason to visit this area is for this restaurant. That's not such a bad thing. The inside of the restaurant is very authentic feeling and not fancy at all. I enjoyed it as it has its own charm to it. The restaurant is BYOB and there's no corkage fee! Pretty awesome huh? Yup. There are many good reviews for this place and unfortunately, I was expecting the best Thai food I've had in Houston. It was good, but not great. The Tom Kha Gai Soup w Tofu was on the salty side. We could not finish it due to it. It has good flavors but all I could think about is the salt. We ordered the Panang Curry with Tofu and the Pad See Ewe w/ Tofu. I made the mistake of not getting the Panang Curry spicy. I blame this on the girl I was with because I paid my attention to her. The Panang Curry was light but not the best I've had. It was a bit different than the panangs I've had at most other Thai restaurants. I enjoyed it but am in no rush to have it here again. The Pad See Ewe was amongst the best I've had. The flavors were great and I was addicted to this dish. It was close to perfect. The service here wasn't bad but also not very good. I wasn't in any rush so I was okay with it but I think some people might have issues. I'm here to relax and enjoy the wines I brought. I like Vieng Thai. I want to come back and try other dishes and get them spicy. It's a bit out of the way for most folks but if you don't mind the travel like me, you should check this place out.

Authentic Thai in a crappy strip mall in a not so great part of town. I got the chicken pad Thai and cleaned my plate...totally delish! Can't give five stars due to semi-shitty service. Had to wait forever for our check and our waiter wasn't very available throughout the meal, but the food is worth coming back

I wasn't impressed with the place. I've heard so many great things about Vieng Thai too but unfortunately the service and food didn't quite hit the spot for me. The waiter or (owner?) wasn't very friendly. He kept rushing us to hurry up and order already when it was just me and my friend in there. Asked for Thai tea, they didn't have any. How do they not have Thai tea at Thai restaurant? I was like, fine.. no big deal. We ordered C5: the jungle curry. When it came out, it was very soup like, not a milky curry texture. He said the kitchen ran out of coconut milk. Thanks for mentioning that earlier? I wasn't happy with the food at all. I also ordered M5:w/ chicken. Not bad but it was greasy and the portion was small. Sigh, disappointed. I've honestly tasted better tasting Thai food elsewhere. I ended up going across the street and ordering Bun Bo Hue at Kim Chau to go to make up for that meal.

Now that I've been here three times, I feel the need to write a review! Every time that I've had the food from Vieng Thai, I have not been disappointed! Like many other reviewers have mentioned, the papaya salad is a great appetizer! I've also tried the boat noodle soup, this dish with sartor (it looks like a big lima bean) and ground meat (pork, I think?), Plaa Pad Ped (crispy catfish), the green curry, and the mango sticky rice for dessert. I can't remember the full name of the sartor dish but I really liked it! The first time I visited this place, it was cold outside and I came solely for noodle soup. That's when I first tried the boat noodle soup and it totally hit the spot! All the dishes that I've tried were good though and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of them. Yes, it's in a sketchy area and the service is eh (at first they brought us a personal-sized bowl of rice to share for 3 people...but after asking to refill twice, they finally brought us out a bigger bowl, haha), but the food is totally worth it! Our main dishes were around $9 each, so not super cheap, but reasonable. I can't wait to go back and try more dishes!

very awkward location indeed. My friend drove me and I thought he was taking me to a deserted area of Houston to finish a drug deal or something. Yes, it's THAT sketch. but let's focus on the food here... the e-carn sausage or whatever (on the appetizer section of the menu) was DELISH! it wasn't too salty like american sausage and the skin on it was just crispy enough. my friend and i agreed that we could have just had 3 orders of the sausage and rice and called it a night. but instead we also ordered spicy eggplant and pad kee mow. the spicy eggplant was good, but i'm not sure if it was good because they made it well or because i downright love eggplant in almost any way cooked. it wasn't terribly spicy but it wasn't bland either. the pad kee mow wasn't excellent, but it wasn't bad either. not sure if i would order it again, because it just didn't seem special to me. i would definitely come back to the neighborhood of sketch just for the damn sausages. if you venture out, at least try the sausages..mmm

Very delicious place to eat. The curb appeal isn't all that enticing, nor is the inside, but once you're served your food that won't matter. Great service and very friendly staff. I can even say that the water that's automatically served when you arrived was great! Filtered and delicious. I had the shrimp fried rice and while I like my rice a little less cooked than it was served the dish was still good. I could have used a few more pieces of shrimp as well. I really enjoyed the food and will be returning.

Anyone coming here expecting great ambience or a "nice" restaurant..needs to get over it. This place is a hole in the wall with FANTASTIC food. You instantly can tell it's a hole in the wall so I don't know why anyone would expect a nice restaurant feel. However, I, personally, love hole in the wall spots..that's where some of the best, home-cooked tasting meals come from! Not many Thai restaurants have Boat Noodles (like Thai Style Pho) on their menu although I think they all should. Our 2 dishes that we tend to stick to (because the thought of not getting our weekly dose of these dishes makes us sad) are the Beef Boat Noodles and the Chicken Paneang Curry. Their Paneang Curry is a savory dish. One of the more popular Thai Curry dishes. A fan of limes & spicy foods...I pack that into my curry dish. Recently, we tried their Shrimp Salad. YUM YUM! I love the flavor of this salad, although, not really a salad. It's basically jumbo shrimp tossed with some other veggies and sauce. It's very refreshing and comes with rice. With that said, I think this is a great place to fulfill your Thai fix. Ever since discovering this spot, the bf and I have gone here at least once a week. If we're not able to dine in, we'll order to go. Definitely a number on speed dial.

Mediocre food. The "coconut milk soup" was actually hot water, curddled milk, lime juice, and WAY too much mushrooms and too much salt. Worst ever. The other dishes looked decent to good though. And the service staff were friendly and very attentive. But the "coconut" soup is an embarrassment and should be taken off the menu.

One of my favorite THAI restaurants. I come here when I have a cold or flu their tom yum soup really cures my upset stomach and stuffy nose. It's in a very odd location and parking can be a hassle sometimes.(very limited parking) -Love the curry and the thai tea. The atmosphere is relaxing and quaint. Food is full of flavor! **would recommend this place to anyone. :)

Been here a few times. Service is always great and the food is consistent. Although they have cheesy neon signs advertising beer, there is no beer here. The place is BYOB. I think their food is a little on the sweet side but some peeps like that. The restaurant is part of a strip center that is easy to miss. The parking lot is not so great. But who cares, if the food is good, I'm there!

There is bad , there is horrible and there is Vieng Thai, the scum that feeds from the bottom of the pond when it comes to bad service and bad food. There you have it.

This place is in an odd area... hole in the wall exterior. The interior follows the exterior, but the food is 4-5 stars. I would get the curry dishes (5 stars), but the noodle dishes and pad thai are more like a 4 star (not enough meat, too much noodle). The dishes are about $9 & up, and the thai milk tea adds to the bill, but it is very sweet and tasty... beware of the sugar in them. LOL. Definitely try this place @ least once to see for yourself, chances are you will like if live in the area. Please click, 'Yes' if helpful

Heard rave reviews by the locals. Some of the dishes are unusually spicy. Even when I ask for mild or not spicy, they tell me that the dishes have to spicy. I've been eating Thai food for over 20 years, in other major cities, as well as Houston, and I know that these dishes do not HAVE to be spicy. When I asked them to make it less spicy, they told me I need to find another restaurant. Not impressed with the food overall. Better Thai food at Nit Noi , Thai Cottage, and other places in Houston.

Not the best Thai food, but the most decent in the area. The parking lot is tight, so be prepared to drive around and around during prime lunch and dinner hours. Customer service varies depending on whom you get. The older male gentleman and other guys are general nice. The woman is really nice to the Caucasians and curt with the Asians. Once I suggested she start a sign-in sheet since it was packed and people waiting for tables were just huddled by the couch and encroaching over to the dining guests, so I preferred to wait by the door where I wouldn't be standing right over diners. She replied that they are smart there, so they don't need a list and if I don't stand by the couch she won't know who is next. Kind of contradicts her self-proclaimed intelligence, doesn't it? She also told us to come "sooner" next time if we want flat rice noodles and Tiger Cry since they were busy that night and ran out. It was 8:30 PM when we ordered, not 11:00 PM or close to closing. It was the only time I've ever seen the place packed (we work near by so we come often when we work late) and it was mostly due to the fact that they took out four tables for a live in-house band which two of the servers were part of, so they were short-staffed. Luckily, we never really see her there since they're rarely that packed so service will be bearable. There was a baby cockroach that crawled onto the wall by our table that night. The waiter attempted to remove it and it came back less than five minutes later. We had to move our table away from the wall in case it decided to land on our table. Didn't have much of an appetite after that. The food is better than Americanized Thai places, but not great. Pad Thai is horrible there, don't bother ordering it. Noodles are broken up into short pieces. Flavor is artificial. You get a total of 4-5 shrimps per order. When you ask for no bean sprouts, they end up in there anyway. Portions are on the smaller side here, BTW. Tiger cry is usually dry and chewy but flavor is good. Boat noodles needs a bit more flavor. The more consistently good items: egg omelette (which supposedly has ground meat in it but I can never find any in there, still tastes good), Drunken Noodles (small portion), Tom Yum soup, and papaya salad.

The first time i went, i thought maybe they were having a bad day! The food was good but the service was horrible. Went again last week- we were a big group of about 20- and it was repeat performance. The food was good but the service was terrible. Dishes were brought out one a time with a good 5 minute gap between them. Soup came after the Red curry chicken, the bowls for soup came 5 minutes after. The fish came last after everyone had eaten. The whole experience was terrible and the food was lost on us. No fun when you get served like this. Not going back again.

Best Thai food you're gonna get in Houston! Get it to-go if you don't like the location. The pork Panang curry and pork Nom tok are my favs. I've tried the panang curry at all the other Thai places and Vieng Thai is by far the best. I won't go anywhere else!

  • Monica M.

Vieng Thai is a solid 3 star restaurant in my opinion. The food is consistent, service is acceptable, and I have always enjoyed my meals. The reason I give it only 3 stars is this: while I find it perfectly adequate, I would never make the decision myself to go. I.e., I enjoy the food enough to go when invited, but would never make my own plans to eat there. There are other places for Thai food that I prefer. Having said that, I've never been disappointed in any of the curried chicken dishes. My kids seem to enjoy the Tom Kha soup, and the last time I went I tried the drunken noodles, and those were delicious as well.

As a foodie and a friend of many of Houston's top chefs I appreciate and know first hand how hard the restaurant business is. I am very hesitant of writing less than a good review for a locally owned and operated establishment. But today, I'm writing this after a very much less than good experience I had at Vieng Thai. Service was never Vieng Thai's forte, but food used to be good. Now, just resting on their laurels. Neither service nor food are good. Sad.

This is the place to be if you are craving for Thai food. Also, this is a hole in the wall which basically mean that their food is really good. Lunch time- you have to come here really early. Around noon time, this place gets really packed. There are limit amount of tables and so you might have to wait to get a seat. I would suggest try to beat the lunch crowd. As for dinner, I don't know if this place gets crowded or not. My co-workers and I usually just come here for lunch. I normally order the Pad Ke Mao which is the wide rice noodle with chicken, basil, tomatoes, and onions. Their papaya salad is good too. I haven't tried any other dishes. I usually just stick to what I always get.

Everything is good. We eat here often beacause there is no better food for the money. We typically spend $35 for two including tip and appetizer. My wife loves the less adventurous noodle dishes and I go for the more authentic Thai curries. Choices for all tastes.

Fast service, fast food but I didn't fall inlove with the drunken noodles. They had cabbage in it and another bitter ingredient that didn't balance the plate. However it was not a bad dish but it was not awesome either. The location was a bit hidden and hard to find.

My go-to Thai place in Houston. The Tom Kha and red curry are always reliable. Owners and waitstaff are funny and very down-to-earth. Be sure to bring your own wine (not sure if there is a corking fee, but if there is one, it's minimal), but I stick with the Thai iced tea or hot tea.

One of a few Thai restaurants that I'm gladly pay instead of cook the food myself. This is where the Thais go and where the Thai restaurants owners go.... Kids friendly and BYOB are definitely pluses.

There were so many reviews with great suggestions here, I had trouble deciding what to eat. I chose the spicy catfish, and it was delicious. My only comment, not really a complaint, was that it could have been a tad spicier. You could easily remedy that, however, by requesting it hotter. Fantastic service, by the way. As soon as the wait staff saw I had finished my soda, they came by with some water for me. As others have said, lousy neighborhood, but the food was outstanding.

This food is amazing! I've brought several different people to try this restaurant and everyone always has a great experience. It's definitely not fancy, but what it lacks in appearance, it makes up for in quality. And it is very inexpensive. This is a must try if you love Thai.

VIeng Thai is out of the way for me. But after Thai Throwdown part Deux's UYE, I may have to occasionally go out of my way for some yummy Thai food. I was about 20 minutes late to Edgar's Thai Throwdown part Deux UYE, and I was fretting. What if I'm relegated to outer Siberia, i.e., on the other side of the room, next to the kitchen, whilst the on-time Yelpers were already digging in and enjoying each other's company? After locating Vieng Thai in a beat up mini-strip center on Longpoint, I ran into Eva L. in the parking lot, arriving the same time as me, so I was relieved I would at least have some good company if banished to Siberia. Luckily, there were two seats left at the loooong Yelp table and we ended up in the company of Andrew V., Christina B. and Tuan L. Conferring with Andrew and Eva, they decided to get a curry dish each while I ordered a noodle dish. I settled on pad see ewe, substituting shrimp for meat. Andrew ordered what I believe to be Gang Dang (red curry with coconut milk, bamboo shoots, bell peppers and basil) with chicken, while Eva opted for a green curry with tofu. A generous dish of rice arrived, with the curries to follow. The red and green curries are very distinct from each other, not only color-wise, but also in taste. I'm still on the fence over which I prefer, as I like curry, period, so I guess I will have to make another trip to taste test. My pad see ewe dish was unlike what I was used to. Instead of thin, crystal vermicelli noodles, this pad see ewe consisted of large, flat rice noodles. Accompanied by several large, tasty shrimp, egg, Thai broccoli, and black bean sauce, it was another pleasing dish. Our side of the table also ordered the soft spring rolls, which we all found to be okay, nothing special. Ours was a sizable group, and the owner and his staff handled us well. They were very gracious in allowing us to eat and still hang around conversing, albeit, sometimes loudly, after we had all clearly finished eating. Never once did we feel the stink eye or rushed. So, sorry Vieng Thai, no Thai Nazi title for you.

Having a hard time coming up with anything positive to say. We ate here on a very hot day and the AC was not keeping up with the heat, so it was just miserable. I had the papaya salad that everyone has been raving about and it was fairly monochromatic, not very complex flavors, mostly just fish sauce. My dining companions all felt the same - no one finished their entrees and no one wanted a to go box. I might have appreciated it more in the winter, but I don't think I'll bother.

Oh Vieng Thai how I love you so... This is our go-to spot when we want a solid meal. Consistently good and always full of flavor. Our staples are Prik King Fried Rice, Green Chicken Curry, Spring Rolls, Spicy Eggplant, and Green Papaya salad.

I really don't understand why this is consistently on the Houston Eater 38. It has had better days, and the mediocre food does not make up for the bad service. At peak times, there are still only 2 servers, tops, and they stress me out. Flagging them down for a single menu to share is a team effort, and then don't even bother about getting your water refilled or food order in. I don't usually care that much about service, but the last time I was here, I think we waited almost a full 45 minutes before we put our order in. When the food finally did come out (all at different times), rice and noodles were overcooked and gummy, and the curries were oily. I've tried to give this a few chances because of the Eater 38, but there is so much better Thai in Houston. Even though Thai Cottage is crazy during lunch, they're so much faster and the food is fresher. If you're going to travel outside the Loop for Thai, go to Thai Gourmet.

This review has been a long time coming. I have eaten here at least 40 times as my job was nearby. This is my favorite Thai food place in Houston. The food is hit and miss, hence the strange spread of reviews. You have to know what to order to ensure a great experience. I am going to keep my recommendations short: if you like noodles, order the Kouw Gai. If you like curry order the Red or Green curry (I prefer the red, my colleague prefers the green). I also always order the Thai tea. It has a hint of spiciness which I prefer to the other Thai teas I have had in Houston. Parking can be hard to find at times. If you are going for lunch, try to get there a little early (11:30). Don't worry as much about parking at dinner time as it is usually much less crowded (unless you go a peak day). The decor is simple and functional. The service is adequate and mostly accommodating. The noise levels are average: it isn't too noisy but it isn't quiet either. The ambiance feels casual with a dash of dive.

This is my favorite restaurant in the city. To be fair, Thai food is my favorite kind of food, but this place does many Thai dishes better than any other place I've been to. All of the curries are outstanding - this is the reason I come to this place. My favorite is Panaeng with chicken, but I don't order it very often because it comes in a smaller dish and it doesn't fill me up like the other curries do. The other curries come in a big bowl with a separate bowl of bottomless white rice to be shared with the table. I recommend the red or green curry with chicken. If you want a healthier option, jungle curry is really good as well but it does not have coconut milk. Other dishes that I recommend are the papaya salad (very spicy), larb, E sarn sausage (appetizer), Boat noodle, or drunken noodle. I don't order pad thai much here, I have had better pad thai from other restaurants in the city. This place is BYOB with no corkage fee, so that is a huge plus. Don't be scared by the exterior (or even the interior) - it is not much to look at but it is the bomb.

Has been a regular destination for groups from our office for several years, but I think the run is over. Was good while it lasted. The cook/recipes have definitely changed since my last visit but the food was still good. It had been several months since I had visited and wish I saw these reviews prior to going as they have a roach problem. Visible roaches walking down the mirrored wall in the dining area. We told the manager behind the counter and he just kind of smiled and thanked us, but said something to the effect that we saw it as they recently sprayed. Open back up when your roaches are gone please!

This was my very first Yelp review. Ah, memories... However, things have changed over the years and not in a good way. I guess we've just had bad luck but every time we go on the weekend it's always packed and there are not enough servers to keep up. The portions have gotten smaller. The food taste is still good, for the most part, but everything is so greasy. It's hard to beat BYOB but Vieng Thai is no longer my favorite Thai restaurant in town. If I had to pick it'd probably be Nidda Thai

The parking lot was full but the inside seemed old and shabby. I liked their wooden menu covers with the silver elephant on it. We took our food to go and had to wait about 10 minutes in this lounge area with old worn out couches like my grandparents used to have. We had the Green Curry with Chicken and the Tom Kha (chicken). Both were spicy. The Green Curry was different than I've had before. The food was good, but just different than others I've tried and not as good as the same dishes I've had elsewhere.

My wife and I have been to Thailand and absolutely love Thai food, and the two we find most authentic are Asia Market and this place. The food here is very authentic and priced very reasonably. The venue is appropriate for many occasions: first date, family with kids, and a large group. Restaurant is in an old shopping strip so is a bit dated but they have some decent Thai decor. I'd recommend the spicy catfish, boat noodles, pad see ewe, and green curry. All excellent.

After reading all the hoopla about this place, including Alison Cook's review and current top 100 restaurant ranking, I thought I had been missing out on some great Thai food. Was I ever wrong! This was some of the worst Thai food I have eaten in Houston.,,and the restaurant itself was filthy! Order the Papaya Salad to start, No papaya to be found. Tried the Thai chicken wings..flavorless and tough. The Pad Thai was below average and not spicy. Finally had The Tiger Cries...the beef was gristly, chewy inedible crap. It didn't even come with rice! At least they took it off the bill when I complained. Even the ice tea sucked. Sorry people I don't get how anyone could put this dump in the top 100 of anything.

Sh!t son, this is good! I like this place better than Thai Gourmet because: 1. BYOB 2. Unlimited rice 3. Owners and staff recognize their regulars 4. It's a hole in the wall 5. I can eat in peace 6. No waiting in line, even on weekends 7. BYOB Some cons are that the dishes are a little smaller than Thai Gourmet, but the prices are also a dollar or two cheaper, so fair enough? The decor is also outdated, as if I went back into the 80's like Hot Tub Time Machine. But I'd like to think of it as character! Where else can you find Christmas lights in one part of the room and then a fireplace and dumbbells on the other side? Oh, and their dish sets are all over the place with different colors and designs. Kinda reminds me of home cooking? =) As far as what to order, the couple of times I've been here I've pretty much liked everything, as they were spicy enough to give me that kick but not mouth numbing. Tom Yum soup is quite good, as it's spicy and a great start to a meal. The green (has basil and eggplant) and num (has green beans) curry are excellent as well, as the num is actually a little watery so it's not laddled with rich coconut milk to weigh you down. I always like picking chicken with curry, as beef always has a tendency to be overcooked. Clams are tasty as well, but the portion is fairly small. I've also had dishes with shrimp and ground pork, as that one was somewhat greasy but spicy good! Oh, the rice here is fabulous. I always end up eating like four bowls to try and contain the heat! Dang, I'm hungry now! Who wants to do another UYE here???

I love Vieng Thai. Another one of those places that meets the success criteria of (1) hole on wall, (2) spotty service, (3) awesome food. It is easy to miss this place. It's off of Long Point in a strip mall sandwiched between a book store and a wheel shop. Just look for the red fluorescent sign over the top of the door. Sampled dishes: -- Som Tam - aka papaya salad. AWESOME. Citrusy goodness and thinly sliced pieces of young papaya. Be sure to watch for the red peppers! -- Masamun - I would have to to say this coconut milk curry with potatoes and onions is not their strongest dish. -- Pad See Ew - AWESOME. Flad noodles with (meat) and cai lan. It is not too sweet and not too salty AND it's not saturated in sauce. -- Tom Yum soup - it's a big bowl and it's DEFINITELY got a spicy kick to it. It's good. -- Gang Pa - it's a red curry with basil, bell peppers, mushroom. SOOO good. -- Tiger claw is this really tasty beef dish that sort of seems similar to bo luc lac (Vietnamese rock n roll beef) -- Pad Grapraow - we had the chicken (it was ground) and it's a stir fry with green beans, bell peppers, and basil. AWESOME. I could write an entire essay of how generally awsome their food is. My most consistent orders when I come here is the Som Tam and the Pad See Ew.

I only give this place two stars because of the excellent papaya salad (som tam). I tried a weird soup - Su Kee Ya Kee - and I should've known better because that name sounded freakishly like Japanese sukiyaki, nothing remotely close to any Thai I've ever heard. But, I thought, what the heck! Maybe it's a specialty! Well, unless ketchup soup is a specialty I've never learned to embrace, it's just a case of evil fusion. The green curry was smeh... flavorful, but weak and brothy. Overall, when Asia Market, Thai Gourmet, and Nidda all exist within a 20 mile radius, don't waste your time with Vieng Thai.

The food here is amazing! I go here all the time! Order the Red or green curry and the Pad Thai and Pad See yew is really good too! We also had spicy eggplant and it was awesome! Unlimited white jasmine rice and for a appetizer the cheese rolls are superb!! We tried the wings and they weren't all that... I would not recommend. Service is pretty good and they have REAL Thai women in the back cooking! You know its good when they have their own people cooking!! lol Really though I go here at least once a week or more!

We hit this up on a Saturday night hoping the drive would be worth it. Boy was it. We ordered 5 dishes and they were all great. If I remember properly we did, 'Fish Balls w/ Basil, Chili', 'Boat Noodle', 'Paenang Curry', Pad Thai w/ Tofu, and the esarn sausage. All were very good, though my partner in crimed asked if we could have medium spice on 4 of the 5 dishes. I think he screwed us. I ordered one dish phet mak (very spicy) and it was so so. I like to bead up with sweat and feel it from the inside out. It seems to me that thai restaurants always curtail to the western palette. It just wasn't that spicy. Next time I'll do the ordering, none of this medium business.. Other than the spice, my only complaint, the food was great. Not as westernized as other thai restaurants in town. They seemed super busy that night and it looked like a bunch of regulars made their way in. Most of the other tables had a bottle of wine with them, and they offered us glasses and ice for our whiskey. I'll be back when I'm out that way, even if the neighborhood is sketchy.

This is, in my opinion, the best restaurant in the Spring Branch area. No, I don't mean in terms of old world ambience and white tablecloth service, but in terms of taste. My experience with Thai restaurants is often been a bit disappointing, as the food tends to be either be over-sweetened (presumably to please the American palette) or insanely spicy, but otherwise one-note. While I do sometimes wish Vieng Thai would ratchet up the heat a bit (the Jungle Curry is probably the hottest thing on the menu), the food has the complex balance one looks for in good Thai food-- the sorts of dishes where one cannot readily identify the ingredients that made it up because the identity of the parts have been integrated into a harmonious whole. In general, one can't go wrong ordering anything with the word "curry" in the title or description, and I usually rotate among the choices they offer here (red, green, massamun, "jungle"), that is when I'm not ordering Pad Grapraow, Pad Prik Khing, and Pad Sar-tor off the entree portion of the menu. Since I usually go by myself, I add an order of fried spring rolls to make the $10.00 credit card minimum (you won't regret ordering the spring rolls, even if you don't need them to meet the price threshold; they are unusually delicious). If they don't bring the condiment wheel with chili sauce, pepper flakes, and phrik nam pla, ask for it. It isn't a fancy place, though it isn't a dump either, and the service is much friendlier than some of the reviews would seem to indicate. Yes, the owner, who sometimes takes orders, is a bit gruff, but if one doesn't expect a no-nonsense attitude from the wait staff in Asian restaurants, you've probably never been to any place that is not catering almost exclusively to Anglos. However, if you don't get the owner, you're likely to get very friendly service (not that the owner is unfriendly), and if you go a few times, they'll remember you and even chat a bit. Either way, I've never had any trouble getting water refilled (good luck with this in Chinatown) or even requesting a little extra rice to soak up the soupy curry goodness.

Great Thai food. Its located in a shabby strip center and is easily missed. Advice, don't miss it. We had several dishes and ate family style so I was able to sample pad Thai, green curry, pho, and vermicelli. All was quite good.

I only wish I lived in Houston so I could eat at this place every night! Ok, maybe not every night...but it REALLY is that good. I can't even tell you what dish I didn't like because I seriously LOVED them all. My favorites are probably the tom yum soup, the garlic chicken, pad thai, and goodness gracious - just order it all! Anyway, I know some prior comments were made about the look/feel of the venue... but really does that matter? I don't know about you but when it comes to Thai cuisine all I care about is that the food is amazing...and this place is ace.

We knew we had found a good place when we pulled into the strip mall parking lot and saw the place jumping at 9pm, just an hour before closing. The food was good and hot (so few places serve their food hot anymore)! We'll eat here again on return trips to North Houston.

I was really excited about coming here because 1) I love Thai food and 2) this place is 5 min away from my place. Mark another one down for "bad service" because this place just blows. We come in and the place is empty except for one other party. I don't really mind seating myself, but I didn't wanna just strut around like I owned the joint, especially when the place is empty. After a min of awkwardly standing around and trying to make eye contact with one of the workers, they finally acknowledge my presence and seated us. After they seated us, they were all sitting/standing around doing nothing. Yet, getting their attention was still like pulling teeth. Ready to order food? Had to wave my arms and get their attention. Refill on water? Same thing. We finished our dinner and waited for our check for 10 min before I got fed up and called for the worker, who was just sitting watching TV. As for the food, the chicken wings were decent, but the order was way too small and not worth the $7 price tag. My order of the Pad Kee Mao w/ Shrimp had two pieces of shrimp that would only be capable of filling up an anorexic Asian girl. The only thing that was decent was my wife's Boat Noodle soup, which is a Pho with a Thai twist. Anyways, I left the place hungry and annoyed. If you want good Thai food, go to Asia Market or Thai Gourmet

Oh my freakin' god, AWESOME Thai food. Don't let the dinky exterior fool you...this hole in a wall is a freakin' mecca for good Thai food in Houston. They've got seriously the best tom yum I've EVER had. Their beef salad (larb) is drizzled with lime juice, seasoned with thai chiles, garlic, and lemongrass, and sprinkled with roasted rice grains. Spicy, tangy, meaty HEAVEN. The curries are off the hook. I'm a diehard fan of Madam Mam's in Austin when it comes to Thai food, but I feel like Vieng Thai's pad seaw really gives them a run for their money. This is everything Thai food should be. And it's BYOB (I haven't tried bringing my own booze yet, but how can you argue with that?) Add on some uber-affordable pricing, and you've got yourself a winner.

This place is getting 5 stars because it's the most flavorful and authentic Thai restaurant I have been to here in Houston. It's a small mom and pops kind of restaurant which I find to be a nice. My favorite dishes are my usual to go to Thai dishes (pad see ewe, pad thai and panaeng curry with beef). Another one I always have to order when I go here is the Pad Grapraow (spicy fried basil) with ground chicken. It's so delicious. I've also tried their omlette which is something that you usually would not order at a thai restaurant but I assure you, this is the best omlette I have ever had! It is so flavorful. I love how the food has a kick to it. If you love thai food, you need to try this place! Oh and it's BYOB and the staff is always friendly!

OK, Vieng Thai...we need to chat. I feel like we got set up on a blind date and did not connect the first time. I was willing to chalk that up to a bad night and, since everyone kept saying that you were such a nice girl with such a great personality and and all, I thought, heck, let's go out again and I can give it another chance. Your restaurant is so remarkably without charm that it lacks even the charm of a dive, dump or hole in the wall. It is like sitting in a garage that has been carpeted, waiting for the neighborhood boys garage band to kick off a BYOB rave. Even being greeted by you with a grunt and a head nod to seat myself, I am ok with your disdain because I know, like all popular girls, you are busy. The first time, I ordered a standard selection of food. The promise of rich intense spicy curries must have been second base action, and, you, being a proper girl, did not put out. It was ho-hum as we sipped our waters and teas trying to make light conversation while avoiding the bigger questions: Why don't I love you like everyone else. So we part and go our separate ways, our disasterous first date slowly receeding in the past. Our paths cross again when I keep hearing how wonderful you are and that I need to make your acquaintence. Ah ha, I think! I still have her number and, since I never said "I will call you in the morning", I have been a man of honor; I know you will take my call....I want to sample your Som Yum papaya salad and your famed Boat Noodles. And I wonder if we can finally kiss enough that you will make my lips and tongue tingle. The Papaya Salad was brought out immediately, indicating that it had been pre made and sitting for some time. There was a pool of juice that had drained from the salad in the bottom of the container and even the additions of peanuts and cilantro had become soggy and wilted. Flavor was oh-so-salty with fish sauce and not so spicy with chilis. And speaking of those chilis, when I asked for the condiments, a caddy with fish sauce and thai chilis, crushed chilis and chili/garlic paste was delivered; I felt like getting a bottle of ketchep that had been refilled over and over and over again. The Fish Sauce had 4 pieces of small thai chilis; the chili paste had been watered and was thin like Campbell's Tomato Soup (after cooking, not the glop in the can). The air of failure was all over this date. The boat noodles came out. Ordered "northern style" with rice noodles, this soup was a deep intense broth topped with a few herbs and green onions. It had a congealed mass of rice noodles in the bottom and 6 pieces of paper thin pork and some miniature golf balls of pork inside. The broth itself was covered with a layer of oil So, Vieng Thai, our dates have left us knowing one another better. Yet, we have not connected. I dispair of that, but instead of being bitter, I would just like to part friends and say that you are the kind of girl I would always be polite to and hold the door when you pass. I will even be polite if we meet because my friends love you. But I will not be your good friend who goes out of my way to say hello. I am just going to assume that we are not a match. And, for this, I would have to say to you, Veing Thai, it's not me; it's you.

As Thai places in Houston go, Vieng Thai is tops for a few reasons: 1) Does incredibly well on the standards (pad see ew, chicken satay, papaya salad, massaman curry) 2) Cheap as hell. Most entrees at ~$7-9. 3) BYOB. Can you beat that? Yes, it's tucked a little out of the way, but they serve a great meal and have fairly attentive wait staff.

Without a doubt, the best Thai food I've ever had in Houston! I never really liked Thai food... but I always thought it was the types of ingredients or spices that they used. After a 2-week visit to Thailand, I realized it was because of the Americanization the Thai restaurants in Houston put in their food, and not the actual Thai dishes that I was disliking. After getting addicted to som tam in Thailand, I was discouraged by the not-so-Thai restaurants in Houston until I went to Vieng Thai with a friend. AWESOME. Everything's delicious... even better than I remembered! Pat see yoo, Kee maw and Veggie Delight(?) are my favs! To keep the review honest, it's in a kinda ghetto location, decor is 80's-cheap-Asian and service isn't that great. But what else do you really expect from a hole-in-the-wall Asian restaurant? To be treated like a king/queen?

Service = ULTIMO FAIL Food = GREASY ... and that pretty much sums up my visit. We walk in and don't see any waiters/waitresses around, so we seat ourselves. 2 waiters passed by us several times, bringing all of the tables around us food or checks. Maybe after 5 minutes of watching them pass us by, they finally bring a menu. Waiter was terse and very short. We ordered two dishes and an appetizer, to which they bring out all at the same time, and before I could even ask for chopsticks, he was gone with the wind. Never to be seen for the rest of our meal until the waitress brought our check at the end. Not once were we checked on or acknowledged, and waters were never filled. FAIL. Food was very one-note, which is the furthest adjective that you would think describes Thai food. Panang Curry came with a visible layer of clear oil on the top. It was so bad that I had to skim the surface multiple times with a spoon to get rid of the oil (at least 4 large spoonfuls). The curry was thin and runny. Chicken Pad Thai was not great either as it did not have any depth of flavor and was also very greasy. Thai wings were good, but srsly $6.99 for 5 wimpy half wings?? And really, how do you fail on rice. Rice was soggy and non-fluffy (not sure what kind of rice they use, did not taste like Jasmine). Freezing cold, bad 80s ballads, air vent above me was completely black (layer of dust)... will NOT be coming back. 1.5 stars.

I was disappointed with Vieng Thai. I found the dishes I ordered were very sweet, to sweet to enjoy or finish. I lived in Chiangmai, Thailand for 6 years. Sure, there is a little bit of sugar added in Thai cuisine to enhance the flavor, but not like this. The waiter asked why we didn't finish, I said I think your chef is using too much sugar. He just said that is the way Thai food is supposed to taste. I didn't want to argue with him, but I also wont go back there again. I have yet to find authentic Thai food in Houston.

Roaches, roaches, roaches everywhere. Not literally everywhere, but they were definitely visible at the restaurant. As one crawled on my leg I got up and left immediately. If you look at all of the 1 stars, at least half talk about roaches (search roaches in yelp for proof). This place needs to be shut down to get their roach problem fixed. I don't care if their food was the best on the planet, if roaches are known to be in the restaurant they should not be serving food. I confronted them and all they did was halfway apologize and then proceeded to charge me for the meal I hadn't even received yet. You have been warned so go at your own risk.

Great experience the place is in an okay part of town it was packed but the service was very good from start to finish I wish I had ordered it a little hotter I said Thai Hot but I think it got lost between the table and kitchen, crispy spring rolls were wonderful the order had 3 with sauce they are small so everyone needs their on order. I tried the pepper steak with shrimp and rice plenty of food it was good I'd order a curry next trip. The Thai Chicken Wings were spiced and fried really nice and no breading. This place is a winner I will be go back when I'm in Houston again.

Vieng Thai is definitely a solid Thai food restaurant in Houston but in the end their may be some better Thai spots in town. I went here for the first time upon recommendation from my wife. Located off of Long Point in Spring Branch, this is definitely one of those places that you could repeatedly drive by and never think twice about what you just might be missing. The outside of the building is a bit shady looking and the strip mall that it is located in elevates the shadiness o'meter tremendously. But if you are willing to put away your preconceived notions and willing to be a bit adventurous you just might find something special. I ordered an order Summer Rolls and Red Curry. Overall I was fairly pleased with my meal. The Summer Rolls were crispy and filled with plenty of pork and veggies. I was a bit disappointed because they were $3.99 and I was hoping to get at least 4 rolls but instead it only came with 3 rolls. Plus they are a bit small. But the Summer Roll definitely have great flavor with perfect crispiness. My Red Curry was also quite tasty. The Red Curry has chicken (or pork), bamboo shoots, green beans, peppers, and basil. The basil really adds a nice kick of herby tangyness to the curry and overall the curry has great flavor. One thing that I also love was that the dish is served with plenty of rice. I hate when places skimp on the rice then charge you for more. But Vieng Thai really gives you plenty of rice with the dish. Although the flavors of this dish were all excellent, their were some other factors that were hard for me to look past. First, GREASY! You could visibly see all of the grease bubbles at the top of the curry which totally took away from the appealing nature of this dish. Also the curry was very soupy and not at all thick. Most red/yellow curry that I have had in the past had a thicker consistency, which really allows you to enjoy the flavor of the curry especially on a bed of rice. This curry seemed a bit watery and runny which made it not as pleasant. So in the end the verdict is still out on Vieng Thai in my book. Their were some things I loved and some others not so much. But I look forward to the next time when I can try some more items on the menu. Hopefully Vieng Thai can move further up my list of great Thai food restaurants in Houston.

Had been here several times and loved every meal. But when I came in to pick up a to-go order a week ago, a roach ran across the table, his under the edge of a plate and then ran back across the table. I was shocked and disgusted. Did not say a word because there was a peaceful dinner crowd in there--but I sat at the long table near the register and couldn't believe I was the only one who saw this.

Last night got take out pad Thai .... The noodles had a floury texture and the entire dish was dry. I've eaten inside the restaurant and the food was better but the service was below average. This will be my last visit. Thai village next to grand palace is highly recommended!

They say, "hole in the walls are the best places to eat." I agree most are. And this Thai restaurant is definitely fitting the bill. Dinner for two under $20 and the food was absolutely delicious. I ordered Shrimp Tom Yum. When I saw the size of my soup, I thought, "wow that's small." Looks are deceiving...and true for this entree. It was the perfect amount to fill your tummy with spicy bliss. If you do not like spicy food, stay away from this dish. When I left my lips were on fire, my stomach was full and my craving was filled. In other words, I was happy. My mom ordered Chicken Pad Thai. Her only dislike was the temperature of her meal. It was warm rather than hot. She said it was a very tasty meal and was the perfect portion. The service was quick and the staff was friendly. Loved the casual environment. I noticed several quest entering with a bottle of wine. I meant to ask if there was a cork fee. Unfortunately I forgot. I highly recommend dining here. I plan to make this a regular spot.

Thai food is generally not my cup of tea. But Vieng Thai is just so delicious I make it a point to actually eat Thai food. The only downside is the bad service, which is why I only gave them 4 stars... I guess the food is good enough to keep me coming back and I get to save my tip money since I will definitively tip according to quality of service.

Vieng Thai is delicious, cheap, and BYOB! I haven't been let down once! The staff is friendly and some nights there is live music.

Larb, Pad see ew, pad thai, drunken noodles, papaya salad are consistently fantastic. Delicious food. BYOB is a big plus (and they very kindly lent us a bottle opener without asking). Authentic stuff. This place is my #2 favorite to the Thai place on Telephone Rd by a small margin only because I can feel the effects of the salt/MSG after the meal. But I've not a single ounce of regret. I hate traffic, but it's 30 minutes away and I still get excited to go again (5 visits thus far).

Everybody at works seems to love this place. I've been there a few times with the same colleagues, all of whom love it. It is a dive place for sure (especially from the outside -- a rundown strip mall). My boss and other friends, who are Thai, says the food is quite authentic, albeit in much larger portions. Today, I went with the garlic chicken. I wanted to try the Tiger Cry, but it wasn't available during lunch. It was a mildly spicy dish, which was fine -- I just pour some of the chili sauces they have and it turned out just fine. I did enjoy the spring rolls, but they're a little pricey: $3.99 for 2, I believe. Maybe the vegetarian ones are slightly cheaper? Anyway, I've tried all of their curries and love them as well. The basil chicken is quite spicy, so beware. It's good, though. My wife did complain about my garlicky breath when I got home, so bring some gum. :) The service can be very slow at times, but it all depends on your crowd. We were just chatting away and it was 5-10 minutes before anybody came to get our orders. The ambiance inside isn't anything special, either. It appears that at night you can get your karaoke on as there is a disco ball, lights, and a/v system. Lastly, if you have a large group, you can call ahead and they'll prepare your dishes and have a table waiting, which is nice.

This has previously been my go-to Thai in Houston. I LOVED Vieng. I have bragged about it, recommended it and taken friends to it. I loved the shadiness of the area, the weirdness of the decor, the amazing service and the incomparable food. I've been twice in the last two months. Something changed. The waitstaff is different and boring. They are not using the same recipes as before for any of the food. They have crammed, literally, crammed more tables in to the point it's becoming awkward. And they have introduced live music...the place isn't big enough for live music. If you want mediocre food, no room to move and have nothing to say to your company, this is the restaurant for you. I'm currently shopping for a new Thai restaurant. Any authentic in Houston I should try? I'm not interested in chains or multiple locations.

Well the food wasn't bad but we left pretty grossed out after spotting two baby roaches. We had already finished our meal and I spotted one and flicked it off table with napkin. Trying to flag someone down for our check. When I spotted the second I killed it with my napkin and we got up immediately to check out.

Food was just average..spring rolls were meaty but pricey compared to similar thai restaurants ($3.99 for 3 small ones)...we ordered the cashew chicken with medium spice - the spice level was vey mild and the dish was quite greasy Not great service, had to get our own hot sauce and brought us the bill when we were only half way done eating.

This restaurant has fantastic Thai food. I would recommend ordering take out. Like most reviewers have mentioned, the service isn't the best but there's a simple solution for that. Portions are just right and the prices are low.

3.5 stars The shopping center is sketch, but the food is decent. I want to give them four stars, but the tofu on the pad thai we had was not very good -- not that nice, chewy sponge texture you want. It seemed like old tofu. However, my penang curry chicken was perfect. The service can be iffy when they get busy. I will be back to give their tofu pad thai another try.

I am so happy there is a great place like this, so close to me. We get to-go food from here once a week. My fiance gets the Tiger Cry beef, which is great quality meat and comes with this awesomely spicy sauce, and I always get the Panang Chicken (spicy, with a taste of coconut but not overwhelming). Don't be afraid of the neighborhood, and try to go on a Thursday for live music!

It started with the Microsoft 95 Word Art welcome sign that hung in the front window. Then there were the sunken in ceiling panels displayed sporadically throughout the interior. There were also Pecan Street Beer advertisements on the walls, even though they were solely a BYOB establishment. And finally it was the random 1970's matching love seats that served as a lounge area in the back corner of the restaurant. All signs pointed to an amazing experience at Vieng Thai. Touted as the most authentic Thai in Houston, it had been on my MUST try list for at least 3 years, but the words "Long Point Road." naively always ruled the idea out. Little did I know, if I simply Google Mapped it, I'd come to find Vieng Thai was a short 8 minute drive from my neighborhood and will eventually serve as my Thai "go-to" not just for convenience, but because it may be my favorite Thai in the city. I had heard rave reviews of the drunken noodles, boat noodle soup, papaya salad and curries. In an effort to not stuff ourselves silly, my boyfriend and I came up with the one noodle dish, one entree game plan (though truth be told, I tried to convince him to do two noodles dishes instead). We settled on the pad kee mao with shrimp and the Thai basil chicken stir fry (which I admittedly was hesitant about). Call me cliche, but I will fully proclaim that I'm a Thai fanatic, mostly because I'm a noodle fanatic. I have also found that historically in my Thai dabbling (primarily Nit Noi, Nidda Thai, Thai Cottage, Thai Bistro, Thai Lanna and unfortunately, not in Thailand), that main dishes at Thai restaurants rank fourth behind noodle entrees, soups and appetizers, and even tea. Our pad kee mao dish came out momentarily filled with tomatoes, cabbage, greens and luscious wide and flat rice noodles. Being the noodle hoarders that we are, I had already warned my dining companion to go easy on his allotment as he voted against my additional noodle request and I was already going into noodle shortage panic mode. After one noodle slurp deep, we both realized noodle envy was unnecessary, not because they weren't amazing, but because they were executed beautifully. There is an art to executing spicy heat in cooking that Vieng Thai masters. By no means would I describe our pad kee mao dish as gentle (as I may of had a sweat bubble or two on my brow), but my boyfriend described it as delicate. I have to agree. Our sole noodle dish split for two totally satiated my noodle needs. Our Thai basil chicken stir fry came out shortly after the noodles. We were both surprised to see our chicken come out ground up as we were expecting small chunks. The chicken sat in boat shaped serving platter with onions, basil, and Thai peppers in a flavorful broth leaving every bite moist and decadent. The dish carried the same delicate heat brought on by the noodles. Our $20 dinner for 2 was complete win paired with quick and pleasant service, and a hilariously unconcerned ambiance. Our one and only qualm was the size and amount of shrimp that accompanied our pad kee mao. If you are to only serve 4 shrimp, I'd prefer for them to at least exceed the size of my baby pinkie (I'm five feet). Regardless, I have no doubt we'll be discovering Vieng Thai's menu for years to come. Bottom line: Vieng Thai trades in scenery (or lack thereof) for authentic and spot on flavor in this Thai hole in the wall. Topped off with their BYOB policy, and speedy service, Vieng Thai is gem for any occasion. Note: They don't accept AMEX.

Located in a not-so-pleasing, sketchy neighborhood is yet another absolutely amazing Thai restaurant, serving delicious, authentic food. I ordered Panang Curry with chicken and the taste was just perfect. You won't get any outstanding service at this restaurant, but it gets compensated with rich flavors. Panang Curry (and many other curry dishes) were not part of the limited lunch menu (which too doesn't come with any soup or salad), so I ordered it from the regular menu. I also wished they had small cup of soups (tom yum, tom kha etc.) as I don't like to have a complete soup meal but rather I like soup to complement my main entree. Nonetheless, I'll be a regular at this place in spite of the barren and boring location.

Waaayyyyyy too much msg in the food. How do I know? I get super thirsty after easting food with msg. I understand that most Thai restaurant use msg but this place is way over the top. Ordered Pad See Eew, chicken was over cooked. very tough! Tom Yum noodles, not impressed. Was expecting some sliced meat, shrimp, fried wonton...got some meatballs instead. Overall, will not return.

Love this place. Cheap, good food, and BYOB (no corking fee). Had take out tonight and it was amazing. Pepper steak (definitely order it spicy, amazing!!), crispy spring rolls, drunken noodles and red curry. I added some of the sauce from the spicy pepper steak to the red curry and boy was it yummy. I'll definitely be back.

We had dinner here and absolutely loved it! The staff was friendly and very polite. Our orders were taken promptly and the food came out quickly. Their portions were very reasonably priced and not too big, not too small and hit the spot! If you are looking to eat large amounts of food, there is no super sizing here (your order or your girth). We ordered the Drunken Noodle (and they were kind enough to sub tofu for the meat), pad thai, and another soupy flat noodle dish. All of the dishes were delicious! I know because I shamelessly ate from everyone's plate. I'm lucky these people love me and share their food with me. :D Only four stars because it was easy to miss and in a dodgy strip mall (I wouldn't come here by myself at night) in a questionable area. Beware of the drivers, parking lot is weird and people will cut you off in a second, so be prepared.

This is my go to Thai place in town. It is BYOB which is nice, and the eggplant and red curry is phenomenal. Every time a friend from out of town visits, this is a must visit for something different and cool.

Food here is excellent. Byob makes it fun but the food brings us back again and again. Sometimes we stay sometimes we pick it up to go. The service is pleasant but the place gets busy if you want 5 star service this isn't your place. If you want the best Thai in Houston this is it!

This is a basic but consistently good restaurant. We live in the neighborhood and love having a go-to Thai place around the corner. The staff is friendly and welcoming every time we've been. It's not a big space, so seating can be tight when they're busy.

First off you're not here because of the customer service (which is horrible), you're not here for the ambiance or decor, you're here for the FOOD!!! The fact that is BYOB doesn't hurt either!! =D Growing up I remember coming here with my parents on Saturdays when this place was a market.. I remember my mom ordering papaya salad in the back and buying bags of fried cracklin to eat with the papaya salad.. Back then this was one of the only item served here... I don't think you could get anything more authentic than Vieng Thai... All the cooks are old lady's (mom like) and each and every dish there taste like you're eating a home cook meal! My favorites are the Pad See Ew, Pad Kee Mao, Boat Noodle Soup, Chicken Wings (yes, get this), Pad Thai, and Papaya Salad (Laos Style)... I will ALWAYS go back to Vieng Thai even with the spotty service.. You can't find a more authentic place for Thai/Laos food here in Houston than Vieng Thai...

This is my first review ;) just moved to Houston and been looking for a good Thai restaurant . I tried Vieng thai because my sister said it was good, so i decided to give it a try. Food was okay 7 out of 10 Service is SUCK, very disappointed. The person took an order was rude and mean. I know how original Thai food taste like, (I'm Thai) Vieng Thai is closed enough if you wanna try original Thai foods.

In Houston on business, I wanted to stay close to my hotel and found this place on Yelp. Initially noticing that, per the reviews, this place doesn't look like much (nor does the neighborhood) I figured I would live to see another day as I piloted my rental into a space between two nice BMW's. From the consensus, I was expecting very bad service. Either those claims are overblown or I must have hit them on a good day. I was greeted right at the door, immediately shown to a table, had hot tea in front of me two minutes later, and a bowl of boat noodles in less than ten minutes after that. Maybe I eat quickly, but the check did not come during my meal. It came just after I had finished and had sat back in my chair. Several times I saw servers come by to the tables with pitchers of water or just to check on everyone. I was in and out in about 20-25 minutes, which is what I wanted to do. The hot tea was nothing spectacular, not a giant issue considering my $2 investment for the pot. (I still had several cups.) The boat noodles had a bit of a different flavor, like nothing I'd had before, so I cannot comment on how they are supposed to taste. To be honest, I will probably try something different next time. Usually I stick to what I know at a Thai place. I was glad to have tried something new. You can't risk ordering something out of your comfort zone and then complain that it's not what you wanted. Honestly, I was preparing myself for good food but a poor experience after reading what others were posting. When I found the service to be quite fine, and ended up with tasty meal and drink for under $10, I was happy with myself for giving this place a try. You should try it, too.

My boyfriend and I were going to try Asia Market for a quick Thai dinner, but since it apparently closes at 7, we ended up here instead, mostly so I could update my previous review (ha!). And this time, I made sure to remember what we ordered. Bf ordered the boat noodle, which is the most popular noodle soup in Thailand, according to the description on the menu. This noodle soup is not for the faint of heart!! I got a kick out of watching the sweat drip down my bf's face. It's super spicy even for me! (My mom was a refugee in Thailand for 4 years and always cooks Thai food, so I grew up on spicy.) But man, this is my kind of food! The soup base is so flavorful it makes you want to slurp it up. Then, you are quickly reminded of the spice factor... To my surprise, bf was a trooper and finished his meal because it was so good! I got the panaeng curry with chicken, which was phenomenal. The chicken wasn't swimming in curry, but there was just enough curry to drizzle over my rice. Oh, and the rice...they give you so much! It comes in a big bowl, so I didn't even have to ask for more. When they brought out my plate of curry, I was disappointed by the size. Bf got a huge bowl of noodle soup, while I got a dinky boat plate. I quickly learned that a little bit of curry goes a long way. There was enough to fill me up plus a little bit to take home. Based on today's experience, I have upgraded Vieng Thai to 5 stars.

This restaurant is by far one of my favorites in the city. It may not look like much from the outside but the food here is nothing short of incredible every time. The service is fast and friendly and it's impossible to leave hungry. My favorites are the massaman curry with fried tofu, pad thai, kouw gai, and the spicy eggplant. Also it's B.Y.O.B. perfect to calm the spice. And the prices? Nice and easy on the wallett

Sunday 06/19 Its hot in Houston and its hot inside Vieng Thai Restaurant. And im not talking about spiciness either. It must have been 88 degrees inside! They had 2 portable fans, one's a square box and the other is a vertical tower, (talk about ghetto) set up on opposite sides of the restaurant. Who said this is like a 5 star restaurant? Youre smoking crack, sir! A hidden gem but nowhere near 5 star. If your waiter is wearing jeans, you cant assume anything more than casual. All the plates and bowls we had were different. SOme porcelain, some plastic, some red, some blue, some gray. Even a broke college student has a more complete plate set than them. Chopsticks were even the most cheapest wooden disposable chopsticks moneycan buy, I know...I bought 'em for for a camping trip. Food. Food was NOTHING special. E-sarn sausage-- came with ~8 dry, quarter-sized half inch thick pieces. Different flavor but definitely not worth $6.99 Pad Sar Tor--ground pork w/ two (2) small shrimp While it tasted ok-good I still want my $9.99 back. 2 shrimps? Come one MAN! Dont be That cheap. Chicken Pad Thai--Sweet, normal. small. Came with no egg, if you want one egg scrambled in your pad thai, shell out another $1.50. How you gone charge 1.50 for egg? Scrambled egg? This is not like a com tam plate where an egg makes a Big difference...its like egg in fried rice! A must have. Kinda like saying, extra for marinara in pizza. Ridiculous. $8.99? Beef Red Curry--No complaints here. The best dish we had. Get it. Get it. Get it. $9.99 Thai Tea--Sweet but it was gooood. tasted the tea and I loved it. $2.50 Service was exceptional. They refilled our waters, even asked to refill our rice. Shall return but next time, I HAVE to order all new dishes. No repeats bc those dishes just aint cutting it (except the red curry). I wouldnt even order them 2 yrs down the line.

It's hard to find because it's in a really ghetto strip center and the sign is hard to see, so look for a sign that says "Thai Food" on the south side of Long Point. It's a hole in the wall, mom and pop shop, but it's good. I love their soups! The Tom Kha soup is smoky, tangy, and a little spicy at the same time. The Boat noodles is a spicy, sour thai version of pho. The panang curry is delicious. The pad see ew is simple but cooked well. I also tried M5, a fried catfish dish, that was yum too. The portions are fair, and it's BYOB! Skip the pad thai though, it's too sweat and very oily. Drop by if you happen to be in the area.

Tasty, authentic thai food. We had the pad thai and sar tor. Though there were only two shrimps on the sar tor, the sauce and ample pork made up for it. Restaurant decor is low end.

I love Thai food... once my favorite place for authentic Thai, over the past year it has been increasingly disappointing. They had great curry when I first started going there a year and a half ago, but then the last 4 times I've been there (I still keep going back hoping I'll be able to rekindle that first spark) the food has just been extremely MEDIOCRE. Plus the Thai waitress and the older Thai man are rude, all the time.

Tired of the usual places near Brookhollow for lunch, I wandered over to my old hood and decided to give this place a long overdue visit. Sure, there is nothing special about the ambiance, but that isnt what i was looking for anyway. My coworker has been complaining that she cant find a good Thai place, since she arrived from North Texas but I think she needs to give this place a try. I spent the first 15 minutes looking at Yelp reviews and decided to try the Panaang Curry with chicken $8.95. The dish is simple (chicken and green beans), but the spice and savory broth was perfect. Service is prompt, making this a great option for lunch rotation. Cant wait to come back and try one of their rice or noodle dishes.,

Good Thai for Houston, worth the drive out there if you are in mood for dark dingyish room and homestyle cooking. This place is great for groups, especially the BYOB policy. There is always plenty of room and the food is decent. I usually get a vegetarian curry which is good but not spectacular. Portions are generous and prices are low. For me, it's the best Thai I have found in Houston although I keep searching for something better.

I immediately liked Vieng Thai . It has a homey yet odd decor ,from the disco ball in the middle of the room to the couches with fake fireplace in the back corner. Its quirky and comfortable in a weird strip mall restaurant kinda way. Most importantly, I could hear the pounding of mortar & pestle in the background accompanied by a scraping wok sound & so I had high hopes for real Thai food. We ordered about 6 dishes & they ranged from average to really good. One of the diners ordered the Pad Thai this is not my fave, but a stand-by & I've had much better. I was also disappointed that they were a bit heavy handed on the oil. I am not one of these "Oh My Gods , there is a drop of oil, can you make mine with water " people.. but this was a bit much. I had to rescue my lovely spicy slice of eggplant like a sad little duckling caught in the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez.. but it was tasty. Now for the good. The main highlight was the Som Tam ( Papaya Salad) . I love this salad. This version was was very good yet adapted to more of a western palate. Once I added a liberal splash of prik nam pla to it , the dish started to taste more like it does in Thailand. The other big hit was the Thai iced tea.. which they made from scratch not the mix!! I absolutely have fallen in love with this bright orange super sweet concoction The final standout dish was the Boat Noodle. The broth on this reminded me of very authentic Malaysian Bak Kut Teh very herbal & aromatic ( which is a good thing !!) The service was attentive & super accommodating as one of our dining companions was stuck in traffic & quite late. This was not an issue at Vieng Thai , it was nice not to feel pressured that we were holding the kitchen up. All in all good food & nice homey service. Just ask for less oil on the fried dishes.

We've been back and while I still like places that seem like they are falling apart, I have to say the food was not as impressive as I remember it. I would certainly be happy to go back, but my g/f would rate the quality of food at best a 3-star from our second experience and its a bit out of the way for me to make a fuss about going.

I've eaten at this restaurant for the past couple of years and had mostly positive experiences. I've introduced many friends and raved about the restaurant. BUT, it pains me to say and more the reason compelled to write this review - that's all in the past. For the past several occasions, I (and a dining companion who also frequents Vieng Thai) have been very disappointed with the quality and consistency of the food. Really hit or miss, I think based on who's in the kitchen that day? The portion size is very small, but forgiveable when the food is good. Also forgiveable is the obvious location/interior and slow service, but clearly not worth it anymore. Most recently, we ordered the chicken pad Thai and we were very unimpressed. Too sweet, soggy, not enough chicken, and too many peanuts. Too bad because it was good while it lasted..

Took 6 friends from Bakersfield, California to the restaurant on January 30, 2009. They owned Singha Thai restaurant in Bakersfield. We ordered 8 different dishes. They said the food is really spicey and more authentic than what they serve in Bakersfield. They liked the food very much. However, they didn't like the location of the restaurant.

This is one of the best Thai food I've had in Houston! The pad thai is flavored nicely here (not overwhelmingly saucy and not not overly sweet), and the pad see ew with beef is delicious with a slight charred taste to it that I love. The curry was only alright when I had it, but there are many who love it... which has led me to believe, based on hearsay and the many times I've eaten here, that the food can be quite inconsistent. When it's good, it's really good; but when it's not, it's simply mediocre. The food really doesn't taste like "restaurant" food to me but like homecooking from someone's kitchen, which can be wonderful, but I can see how some might not enjoy that kind of flavor if they were expecting otherwise. Don't come expecting fanfare -- just simple, good food. I've also had som tum (papaya salad -- everyone raves about it here but I found it overrated) and boat noodle (very interesting flavor), but I typically stick to pad thai and pad see ew. The prices have gone up since I've been there, but it's still relatively inexpensive (around $7-8 for pad thai). As others have mentioned, its location on Longpoint is not the best. However, I've seen really nice cars parked outside every time I've visited, so have no fear. It's definitely worth trying just to break away from the more modernized Thai restaurants.

I started coming here because I moved to the Heights area and was looking for a nearby place for my Thai fix. Upon a friend's recommendation, tried this place and have been a fan since. Dishes are fairly cheap and some of the best ones I've tasted in Houston. Both the pad thai and pad see ew are delicious. Their tom yum soup is flavorful and spicy. Other dishes I usually get are the basil chicken--a dish I don't normally prefer but this place makes it not too strong so it's more palatable--and a curry. Had the red curry last night, and I think I like it better than the yellow or green ones. Only problem is I wish their curries were thicker--it's a little watery for my taste--but they're still good. The joint is located in a ghetto-looking strip, but the inside is decent. If you can get past the possibility of getting shanked for your Thai food, then definitely give this place a try. I usually order take-out; their menu hangs on my fridge next to Pink's.

Years ago when I first started eating here, they satisfied my Thai craving & were always good but nowadays, the prices have gone up while the portions have gotten smaller. The gentleman who waited on us was very pleasant & our food came out pretty quick. 2 of us shared an order of spring rolls, Tom Kha soup & Pad Thai. I have to admit, I've never had the soup before but it was smaller than expected, w/a thin, overbearing lime tasting broth. The pad thai was overly sweet & also a smaller portion than I've had in the past. The server asked if we wanted rice w/the soup (yes!) & it wasn't fresh streamed but more sticky lump (it was after 8pm though so perhaps sitting out a while). The spring rolls were so small & only 3 for $3.99. I remember they use to be larger & came w/the lettuce & bamboo shoots. I will probably go back, cause they're "in the hood" & I do like the heat of the red thai curry, which I always get in take-out & usually get more & hot rice.

Yes, its smack dab in the middle of "THE HOOD" but don't let that deter you from this place my friend for you will be greatly rewarded. A true gem in Houston in a category that is fraught with mediocrity, VT stands heads and shoulders above the competition. The low rent seems to keep this place affordable. Although, my last visit, I did notice they didn't give me as much gravy in my penang beef curry as I'm used to but the flavor was still right on. Also, their Pad Thai isn't the best in town but without reservation this is my favorite thai restaurant. Hands Down!!!!

Possibly only reviewed before by the landlord, owner or those that get to eat there for free... Sorry but my M7 and M14 - Chicken and Basil and Pork and Shirmp were close to TV dinner quality. Perhaps this is a spot that is better for lunch than for dinner. I would say the decor and the food were on equal footing. Yes you can bring your own BYOB and in my estimation - it will be a great place to eat when you can bring your own Thai food from somewhere else. I would not suggest this as a place for Thai - but that is just me.

If you like good thai food, then Vieng Thai is worth trying. The location, the decor, and the service all suck, but the food is pretty good.

This is one of my favorite places to eat. Try the chicken panaang and the spicy eggplant.

I am on a Thai kick lately! I felt like I'd be cheating Thai Pepper if I didn't review it before this place considering it was my favorite Thai restaurant for a while..until now. I asked my Thai friend which Thai restaurant was his favorite in town, and he never could remember the name of the restaurant but always pointed to this general vicinity. Well another friend of mine finally invited me to dinner at this little dive of a restaurant and upon arrival I realized why my Thai friend never remembered the name. It is in an unassuming shopping strip with a plain white sign with the red letters "THAI FOOD" labeling the establishment. I think the name of the restaurant was displayed on a neon sign below that. I love "hole in the wall" places, so I immediately slightly salivated in my mouth and walked in. I saw the entertainment system next to the tv and light fixtures along the back ceiling and could immediately tell wild private parties are thrown here when you're turned away.... OK on to the food!! I only tried two dishes, and they have left me craving more and definitely wanting to try every dish there. We split the Pad See Ewe with beef and the Gang Massaman with chicken. I've never had the Pad See Ewe, but my friend told me that it was a Thai local dish that she frequently had when she was in Thailand. The taste was wonderful, and I personally love it when eggs are added to accent a dish which did not disappoint on this occasion as well. The beef was not dry, yet juicy, tender and plentiful. The curry was aaaamaaazing. The potatoes are cut into a cute little shape, and the curry is soaked into the taste. I am craving the curry now that I'm talking about it again. I wish I would've asked for it to be a tad spicier, but everything about it was delicious. Both dishes were abundant in portions, and I left with a take out menu and a promise to take Husband to try it as well. Prices are awesome, and with tip you'll probably go over $10, but meh. P.S. My Thai friend said this place was the best in town. Who better to judge than a Thai native??

Upon further review, you don't get enough for your money at Vieng Thai. I still think it is among the best in Houston, but wish they would give you more food. Personally, if my wife and I spend $30+ on Thai food, I think we should have some left-overs.

Very good - and kid friendly satay and spring rolls. I wish I knew what more dishes were so I could try them. I saw several great looking thing on other tables.

I love this whole in the wall. It's my favorite Thai place. If you like Vietnamese Pho, you have to try the Boat Noodle here! It's so awesome! Sometimes, the food is a little inconsistent with their level of spiciness, but I'm still a huge fan. It's also BYOB!

In the middle of nowhere, Vieng Thai is a surprise and a delight. Arguably one of the best thai restaurants in North America, Vieng Thai is both authentic and welcoming. Call ahead, make sure they are open, and take yourself down here when you are in Houston. So good, so worth it!

vieng thai is the best thai restaurant in houston, hands down. i really can't believe i haven't reviewed this place yet as it's one of my favorite ethnic spots to eat in the city. yes, the service is shoddy. yes, the restaurant is outside the loop in a questionable part of town. they don't always even bring me what i order, but all of this is sacrifice well taken in my opinion. the food is absolutely authentic and amazing and i've never had a dud dish here. i am also reviewing this place having eaten at lotus of siam in vegas which is considered to be the top thai restaurant in the country, and jitlada (southern thai) in LA's thai town, considered to be one of LA's best if not THE best authentic thai by jonathan gold, pulitzer prize winning food critic. vieng thai easily competes with these restaurants. this is my go-to place for a thai dinner when i'm in town. it's BYOB and i try to round up at least a table of 3 or 4 to enjoy multiple dishes. you may have already read my review of asia market inside the loop. asia market has the best pad kee mao i've ever had and the tom kha gai rivals vieng thai's, but everything else is better here including the variety. get the som tum (papaya salad). amazing stuff and very memorable. get a soup: i prefer tom kha w/ coconut milk over tom yum, but both are very good and well balanced. plaa pad ped- crispy catfish in curry paste with basil is a must have. then pick a curry. i like the panang or massamum more than the green curry (gang keaw whan). if you want more, pick a veggie. the chinese broccoli is better here than at any chinese or dim sum restaurant, no joke. pad grapraow crispy pork is also wonderful. if you find yourself here by yourself for lunch, try one of the noodle soups. the boat noodle soup is fantastic. they claim it is the most popular noodle soup in thailand. you'll also notice that that is what the thai diners are slurping on.

I love Thai food and decided to try this place because of all the great reviews. I had the spring rolls ($3) and the chicken basil with rice ($8). It was kind of pricy; I was charged $15 which didn't make sense. The cashier said it was because it included tax; it still didn't make sense, but I just had to let that go. I would say that both items I tried were authentic or at least more so than Thai Cottage. The only comparable Thai place I have been to in Houston would be the Asian Market in the Heights which I would say I prefer. Also, I like my Thai food very spicy which this was not even though that's what I ordered. I would give this place another try though.

wow. above and beyond the hype. 80 reviews for this place already, and it still surpassed expectations. the best thai food i've had, easily, and it's hilariously goofy inside. pad see-ew and the catfish in curry were mind blowing. this is the new dealer for my thai food addiction.

Easily one one of the best Thai restaurants in town. Must try: Thai omelette, papaya salad. Definitely my favorite around NW Houston. The neighborhood is somewhat shitty, esp at night.

A dive with authentic Thai flavors where other Thai restaurant owners around Houston come to eat. Very kids friendly place so kids haters should not come before 7:30 before their bed times. Best papaya salad in town....I'm Thai so I should know...

The food here was ok. Big negative, they ask you to put your toilet paper in the trash can. Gross and unsanitary. No parking. Super sketchy unsafe neighborhood. Not worth the BYOB. Go to Nidda Thai instead.

Num Tok salad w beef was great! Panang chicken was good. Had some other dishes as well but all & all everything was pretty good. Ask for the most popular meal ("PPP") or the ("PPK"). Service was fast.

Since my last review, this restaurant has changed their coconut milk. This used to be my go-to for Thai, but no longer. When confronted about the issue, the owner became defensive and asked me not to come back. I had been a very frequent, long-time customer. They even knew my voice on the phone when I called for take-out. It's not good anymore.

I gotta say, this is by far the best authentic Thai food in town! I frequently go here with my co workers for lunch and dinner with family and friends. It's a little whole in the wall restaurant, but the food is AMAZING! I always order the boat noodles, Thai style papaya salad, and chicken wings..other dishes are good here as well like the fried rice, fried fish, pork sausage and pad kee mao. Friendly service, inexpensive eats and byob. Can't beat that!

This unassuming restaurant serves tasty food! It's our new favorite stop for moderately priced delicious Thai food. The curries are wonderfully filling and flavorful, And the rice keeps coming! We also have enjoyed the beautiful Thai textiles such as the tablecloths. A beautiful touch that enriches the cultural dimension of the restaurant. A must go to spot for top Thai food in Houston!

I really enjoyed this place before but it was also night time and I was really hungry. When Asia Market was closed for remodeling (heights) and we were craving Thai food, this seemed like the next closest and delicious spot on the mind. At lunch, it is surprisingly busy and we got a spot near the window. Thats when a little cockroach friend scampered across our table. We told ourselves it was not a baby cockroach but was a harmless bug that happened to just come in from the window, because we were so hungry but now that I'm reading the other reviews..yea. The papaya salad was tasty and large, but other dishes had more cabbage than noodles, which seemed like a substitution that wasn't necessary. Parking was also very difficult and that little lot fills up quick. Will not be back.

My family has been coming to this restaurant for over 10 years. TRULY one of Houston's best hidden gems! Every single friend of mine has been brought here at least once to experience the amazing quality and flavors that I have known to trust and crave. Never have I had a dish here that I haven't liked, and I've had most of them! The spring rolls are just addicting! I have on many occasions gone in and just eaten several orders of spring rolls with their amazing peanut sauce. The Drunken Noodle is outstanding! And the Thai Tea is so sweet and refreshing! The curry dishes are all so flavorful! I wish that they hadn't stopped making their mango with sticky rice, but we can't have it all! They don't serve alcohol, but its BYOB. You can bring wine or beer if you want to have those with your dinner. Customer for life!

Meh! Not the best, but it is close to work. The pad see ewe didn't have the authentic flavor I was looking for. My friend got the "boat noddles" which to me was a super spicy Vietnamese pho. Great flavor, but not enjoyable because it was too spicy.

It's a casual, neighborhood place, and while it won't be everyone's cup of tea, I absolutely love it. Parking isn't optimal, but the pricing is pretty great and the food is excellent. The red chicken curry is amazing, i eat it about once a week.

As some previous reviews stated, this place is located in an off the beaten path area of Houston, located in a strip mall low key spot. The interior is a bit of retro flashback with eclectic interior decoration such as a the disco ball hanging, CCTV playing foreign programs, ceiling tiles a bit discolored and several couches grouped I would presume as a waiting area. The food to me was just 'ok', and typical of most thai mom and pops restaurants. The pricing is economical and the crowd is mixed and diverse which adds to the eclectic interior. This place would be something I would visit maybe twice a year, so its needless to say I won't be coming back to soon.

This is the bf's absolute favorite restaurant so we go a lot, and I've definitely become a fan. It's not in the best neighborhood, but it's the perfect place to get some quick, delicious, and CHEAP thai food, and BYOB with no corkage fee is an absolute plus. For appetizers, we'll either get: -Soft spring rolls: pretty basic, no meat I believe, but their peanut sauce is on point -E-sarn Sausage: I first tried this northern thai-style sausage here. It's fermented so it has a slight sour taste. Interesting to try! -Papaya salad: Delicious and spicy (lots of thai chilis)! Sometimes the fish sauce can be a little much, but this is a refreshing dish For entrees, we usually each get one of the curries. All of their curries are flavorful and delicious! We rotate between the Panaeng (my bf's favorite but for some reason comes in a smaller bowl than all the other curries), Red Curry, Green Curry, or Jungle Curry (no coconut milk). One thing to note: the curries can be and look very oily, which may be off-putting to some people but obviously makes it taste better... The Drunken Noodles (pad kee mao) is great when you're not in the mood for curry. If you want some soup, I'd recommend the boat noodles (kind of like pho but with a darker, more flavorful broth). One dish I would not recommend is the pad thai--it's not very good and has too much fish sauce. Entree portions are generous (except for panaeng curry)--I always have leftovers. Service can be spotty at times and difficult to get the waiter's attention, but lately it's been much better. The restaurant can be packed at peak hours (weekend evenings) but I've never had to wait more than 10-15 min. They also have a live band that plays on Thursdays I believe (one of the waiters is in it)! The exterior/interior may not look that great, but the food, BYOB, and cheap prices definitely make up for it!

This place is average, but not sure if I'll be returning anytime soon because last time I went my mom had ordered the boat noodles and in the midst of her eating she found a rubber band in her soup, this is a choking hazard since the noodles and the rubber band blend in and the rubber band is skinny like the noodles, so if she hadn't mixed around her soup she probably would've choked. And to finish it off, their service isn't that wonderful either.

BYOB joint. Super chill. I'm just not sure how clean it is. There is a seating area where the couches look filthy. The floor is never clean, either. Also, last time I was in there, a small roach crawled right up the wall next to my table. I will not be back.

We first came here on recommendation from a friend, and we've been back several times since. It looks a little sketch from the outside, especially at night when we first went, but all was forgiven when we tried the food. The drunken noodles are something I absolutely CRAVE now (the basil really makes it), but I haven't tried anything I haven't liked. I'm also reviewing partly because I keep forgetting this place's name when the drunken noodles craving strikes. And I keep forgetting it's BYOB!

Three strikes first visit...... Let me explain. I'm from Spring Branch, love when our restaurants get some press!! So I've been watching this restaurant get some good food reviews so hubby and I finally made it over there. Read every review on Yelp...I get it, it's authentic but a dive. It is. Crappy "living room" couch setting against the back wall, ick strip center, fake fireplace, every waiter in the place waits on you (but they couldn't have been more efficient at lunch today, spot on)....it IS a dive. And I'm completely cool with all of that. Love me some sketchy places with great food. That being said... Large gnat? on table when we sat down. No prob, it's Houston after all, hubs wiped it off with the paper napkin. Soft spring rolls were awesome. Then the soup was served family style and when the individual bowls/spoons were served there was a live baby roach stuck to the fresh-out-of-the-Hobart-bc-it-was-still-wet-bowl's rim. Moving tiny antennae and all.... Should have run but let them exchange the bowl/spoon combos. Again, it's Houston. Food after was ok, still had way better Thai in town though. Just as we were about to ask for a to-go container (great portions) my husband hurriedly flagged down the waiter for our check instead. ???? He pointed and I turned in time to see a full grown roach crawl up the wall and slip into a door crack. That's it. Soooo done trying to be nice, guh-ross. May be a great place for a lot of folks, but they have GOT to get their pest problem under control. Man I miss Marvin Zindler!!! So bc of him I'll stick to one of his faves and ours, Thai Gourmet. Love a dive, can't deal with that many bugs.

Delish Vietnamese food! We had the boat noodles and pad see, and I'd highly recommend both. The boat noodles were surprisingly spicy--my lips were tingling for a while after the meal--and the pad see was surprisingly sweet. Great place. My only complaint was that they forgot about one entree and brought it out ten minutes after the other, which awkwardly left one person sitting without food. Otherwise, great food!

So I read the reviews, and bookmarked it and I finally made it there today. Disappointed, I had high hopes but I guess this place has hit its peak and is on it's way down hill. Ordered a mixture of things and the only thing I would say was up to PAR was the soup, service...ummm... yea that's it. Rice was over cooked and was more like a thick gummy blob, red chicken curry was okay (asked for spicy but ended up with very bery mild, and the ratio of curry to everything else needs some attention), the pad Thai was very disappointing, tasted stale & greasy, chicken was dry and chewy. The crispy tilapia was okay, noting to brag about... Now the Tom yum and the seafood soup came out pretty good, nice and spicy as requested, full of flavor and ingredients (not just broth). Unfortunately, this isn't going on my "I will be back" list
