Sushi Rock is your friendly neighborhood dive sushi joint, if those were a thing. It's certainly not your fancy $$$$ sushi couture restaurants, but more like your Sunday evening one dollar sign ($) comfort sushi establishment. It is right on Holcombe with a nice spacious parking lot as it is on the corner of an intersection. Accessible and recognizable, it is so easy to go whenever you want. I really enjoy my time at Sushi Rock. I don't exactly remember but they have happy hour definitely on the weekend until probably 7pm. What can get better than that!? One of the times when I went during Happy Hour on a Saturday evening it was pretty packed, so service took longer, but for the price and atmosphere, it was not such a big deal. Also, if you go really early during happy hour, it's not crowded at all! Sushi Rock mainly has booths and tables, but also a small sushi bar to the right. The chefs are working away to make all their orders, while the rest of the restaurant happily chatters away. The selection of sushi is pretty good, with a fair amount of normal rolls as well as specialty rolls. And of course, they have hand rolls, which is a decent selection as well. I like scallops a lot so I chose the chopped scallop hand roll last time I was there. It did not look like what I thought it would, but it still tasted pretty good. Their service is relatively quick, usually. During happy hour, it's really hard to not get 3 rolls because the prices are really unbeatably good. My tummy is never mad at me for shoving 3 rolls down even though that's too much food for me. Whether you're trying to bring a whole group of friends to a casual sushi night out or want a casual date night with your family or partner, this is a good place where you know what to expect.

our waiter did not wash his hands after using the bathroom. the place also smells strange and the food was awful. grocery store sushi is better.

The service here is TERRIBLE!!!!! We waited forever for our server to take our order. Took her about 45 minutes to get our food. Waitress never checked on us. Others servers had to pick up her slack. Food is delicious and affordable. However with service as bad as it is. May not come back

I had to force myself to give this place 3 stars. First off, their delivery system is not very user friendly. They have different delivery services that delivery to different areas. This isn't mentioned anywhere on their website; I found out because when I was trying to place m order, I was told that I was out of area and I had to call and find out. Once we got the food, I was not satisfied. I ordered 2 sushi rolls and neither of them were very good at all. The rice was overcooked and the flavor just wasn't there. I do commend this place for the AMOUNT of food that they offer; quantity over quality is definitely the motto of this place.

This is exactly what I love to find: low key, quality restaurants that deliver great food, no frills, reasonable prices with a pleasant staff. Ordering off the lunch menu, I couldn't help but love every dish ordered. As far as I'm concerned, their lunch menu is a value. The fish was very fresh and generously cut. The Peppered Tuna Nachos left you wanting more. The LS-E was ordered with the Crab Salad Hand Roll, which is highly addicting. The Basil Chicken was another hit with juicy pieces of chicken that were thankfully not heavily salted. The wasabi has a good amount of potency - which is a plus and something I judge sushi restaurants for. Overall, even though they have a pretty good Thai menu, I mostly enjoy them for their fresh sushi and recommend you do too!

This is not where you go to impress your boss or your girlfriend (unless she's like me and loves a good deal, in which case well done you!). This is the place you go when you want good quality fish at I'm-not-sure-how-they-make-a-profit prices. You can get hammered on $1.50 beers and $3 large sake while chowing down on $3 rolls and $2 nigri. During happy hour, I'm overly full and pretty tipsy for around $20. Yes, I'm hungry again in like 30 minutes, but that's not Sushi Rock's fault, I blame that on sushi in general. Best deal I've found in the city, and if you miss happy hour you can always grab a restaurant.com coupon and get half off regular menu prices!

I contemplated on giving them 3 or 4 stars. I was thinking this really isn't the best sushi place I've been to, but their prices are super cheap. So for the price, I'm getting exactly what I'm paying for. It's located on Holcombe in between Kirby and Greenbriar. It's very convenient and never crowded. They also have delivery. And the delivery service is very quick. If you don't want to spend a lot and want fairly decent sushi check this place out. They're actually cheaper than the supermarket.

The food here is good, but not great. On food alone, I'd give this place 3.5 stars. The low rating is due to the service. During our meal someone came by our table every two minutes, which was quite distracting. The biggest faux pas was the waitress clearing dishes. I was nearly done with My meal, and she asked "are you done with that." I was not, yet before I could respond, my plate was being whisked across the room. When I complained to the manager, he seemed unconcerned. I shall no longer be dining here.

One word...dreadful!!! This place was dirty, sticky tables and smelled awful. Skip this beast!

  • Vincent Y.

The day I walked in, there was only 1 other table occupied. Then I found out that happy hour doesn't exist on Wednesdays. Lastly, the air smelled like a mildewy mop bucket. With all of these red flags, why didn't I turn around!?!? I should've gotten up and ran out the door, but alas we had already committed. I ordered the chef's special, which was a roll with some pieces of sushi plus soup. Quality of food was poor. Sushi fell apart. Literally! They didn't make enough sushi rice, so each piece was missing that "compact" texture. You'll end-up with lots of rice in your soy sauce. Also, the rice may have been old, thereby lacking that "stickiness" factor. The salad had a carrot-based dressing - somewhat sweet, but not to my liking. The salad lettuce was el-cheapo iceberg that day. Service: needs improvement. Although waitstaff is courteous, they need to grow some friggin antennae! You'll need to perform the statue of liberty for a good 10 minutes before they notice you have your hand up. Also, when they served us, they forgot the place settings. (What, we just eat with our bare hands?) This was probably one of the meals I regretted the most.

There are some really positive things about Sushi Rock. For example, you can order 3 rolls and have your check still be under $10. As a college student, that is a very big plus in my big, and it is the reason I keep coming back. Also, the waitstaff there is incredibly helpful and friendly, and if you come enough like I do, they even start to recognize you and remember your order. However, the food at Sushi Rock is hit or miss. Sometimes my rolls look beautiful, but occasionally they are falling apart. The sushi here sometimes has a questionable look, and the tuna pieces are occasionally tough and hard to bite through. Despite this, Sushi Rock is one of my most frequented restaurants because it is so dang cheap and the people are so dang nice. I recommend trying it out if you are in the mood for sushi and on a budget.

A few of us ordered from Sushi Rock as a delivery. We were excited when we called and asked what came in the bento box: your meat, rice, salad, soup, and two rolls: california roll and sashimi. If you are ordering strictly for quantity, definitely think about ordering the bento box. As far as quality, I would rethink ordering from Sushi Rock at all. The teriyaki chicken was just unappetizing. Sad, dull pieces of triangular chicken in an equally sad sauce. The rice was dry and just as unappetizing as the chicken. The sushi, while not awful, is not the best you can get here in Houston... In my opinion Kroger has better sushi. The miso soup was just... miso soup - didn't stand out but wasn't bad. The best part of the dish was the salad which was quite refreshing and had a good dressing. Not so sadly I will not reordering from Sushi rock.

So I have been here at least 5 times. Sushi is meh, for that I like Kudo's in Rice Village. Although the best salmon sashimi hands down is Asahi. Anyway, I gave it four stars because I recently tried their Thai menu. Oh my its delicious. Large portions and really good. Pork dumplings are pretty good too, a little crispy on the outside, just like I like it.

  • Logan N.

This place is good. I come here sometimes on my lunch break because it is cheaper than going to osaka's. However recently when my co worker and i would come their fish is old. After the 3rd time coming and the fish being old and super fishy i have had my fill of this place. Other than ordering the fish everything else is...adequate. If you dont have discerning tastes or a large budget this place is for you. Waitstaff is kind and somewhat inattentive, i gave this place 3 stars because its pretty afforadable and good.. As long as you dont order any fish/sushi dishes.

This place was great! Got the Sea if Love and 212 rolls and a glass of Kendal Jackson Chardoney, it was delicious!!! Not sure why this place was not crowded but it was 8:30 on a Wed night. We will definitely be back.

I got a Groupon for this place and then read the Yelp! reviews (I know, wrong order) so it was with a bit trepidation that I finally entered this place. The ambiance of this place leaves a lot to be desired as it resembles a burger king, which was converted in 1995 only to have no further renovations or maintenance done in subsequent years - and the smell! Like rotting fish. Gross. Still, I was in a sunk cost situation and I would not back down. We got the miso soup and edamame to start. Delicious. I was surprised. Then we got 3-4 rolls total, 2 of which were localized - the Houston, the Astros. Both were creamy inside and sauced. The traditional rolls that we got were also quite good, but I still left expecting food poisoning based on the claims from other reviewers (and the look of the place). Not a good feeling to have upon exit from an eating establishment, so I probably won't be back any time soon with so many other places to choose from.

  • Mihalis R.

I am not a great Sushi fun, my wife is the Sushi specialist! She mind the sushi was gut, I also find it gut. The place is ok, service was ok, they need to learn first we serve appetizer and AFTER main course! Especially when I specifically ask about it. The main course : a fried fish with spicy sauce, was ok but nothing more really. Prices are ok. Probably take some food to the room the next time.

  • Akshay G.

For the price this beat oishii happy hour...very friendly staff, no lines and good food.

    (4)
  • Roger L.

The happy hour menu is really cheap - a 180 lb guy can be satisfied with two rolls and two hand rolls ~16 bucks if you're tipping 20%. Tip 20% because it's always the same workers working there, and they will recognize your face. Quality of sushi is definitely mediocre. Can't really be picky in this area though.

  • John B.

I can only speak on their delivery as I personally have not been in the restaurant. I ordered 2 spicy tuna rolls and a special 212 roll. They were all disgusting. They came in white plastic containers not typical of sushi restaurants and appeared poorly prepared as well as wet. The food did not smell right and actually tasted horrible, not to mention that there was still skin on some of the tuna. I threw the whole order out, which was not cheap for fear of getting sick. If their restaurant is anywhere near as good as their delivery I wouldn't come close to this place. There are many other sushi places in town, find one with some decent reviews.

Super awesome cozy quite spot, my first time here. Service was fantastic, food was great. I will be returning. They have varieties of different things.

I've been to this place MANY times. The sushi is always great. The prices are more than fair. The variety is great. The downside. The place is so boring. The restaurant itself is very very dull. There is no music. And the bathrooms are not pretty. I'll leave it at that. Too bad. Food: 4.5 stars. The place (including it's staff): 1 star.

    (2)
  • Casey W.

Food poisoning. As I type, I'm missing a day of work from the food poisoning I got here yesterday at lunch. I'm a vegetarian, so it was either due to cross-contamination and unsanitary food-handling, or the rice was left out too long at the wrong temperature. I'm absolutely miserable, and will never be setting foot in this place again.

  • Jason D.

This is not a high class swanky joint. Nor do they attempt to be. I went here for happy hour. Excellent service. They came by every few minutes to see if we were ready to order or needed more drinks. Very friendly. In addition our food came out quickly and was very good. The fish tasted fresh, the miso was good. This is a solid choice for casual eating. You can find better food elsewhere, but for the location close to the med center, and the lunch price it's a good spot. 4 stars for excellent service and decent fair at a good price.

  • Archer L.

Great sushi. I waited super long to come here because of all the bad reviews, STUPID MISTAKE. When you do come here you'll want to order the jalapeño bomb and enjoy a sushified jalapeño popper. The prices are cheaper than other sushi spots in the area too which is nice, and they always seem to have good restaurant.com deals. It won't be long before I come here again.

I love going to Sushi Rock! I usually go on my lunch break because the service is fast! The staff is very attentive! The food is very fresh and very tasty! The chef is really creative with his sushi designs. Everything always tastes really good! I also like their Tai part of the menu. The pad Thai Chicken is absolutely delish! I would recommend this restaurant to all including families. They have a wide variety on the menu so kids can also enjoy. It's not just sushi! Very yummy place!!

  • Lily M.

We came in at around five and we were the only customer there. The sushi was ok but the price is cheap. So it's a good place for a cheap meal.

  • An N.

I only went to this place because they had a coupon on restaurant.com . We had miso soup, shumai, egg rolls, curry, and 5 different sushi rolls. The food was mediocre, but the service was horrible. It seemed like our waiter couldn't understand us very well. It took a very long time to get our check. We were ready to go, but we ended up spending an extra 20 minutes there because didn't receive our check even though we had requested it.

Although some of the rolls are not bad at all, the service is terribleeee!!!! Apparently the waitress is always in a bad day!!!!

I've only eaten off the "happy hour" menu, so if I come back and eat at dinner time and order fancier rolls, I'll update if I need to. The happy hour prices cannot be beat. And on the weekends, "happy hour" is noon-7pm! There's a nice variety of the simpler sushi, rolls, and appetizers. And cheap sake! The "spicy" rolls were a bit odd, but I just moved here a month ago so maybe that's just how it's done in Texas? They didn't have a mayo-based "sauce" around the chunks of fish or crunchy flakes mixed in, and they tasted more like a hot pepper than the normal (northern US?) spicy sushi taste. I wasn't really a fan. My favorite thing I ordered was the veggie hand roll. Really tasty. The rice was a little too dry, but held together mostly. Service was quick, helpful, polite. Not much atmosphere - I think it used to be a Pizza Hut? - but clean and functional. Will definitely be back - the prices are too good not to!

  • Meowston T.

Not the best place to have good sushi. Salmon is ok but yellowtail is bad. And I find 2 bones in my yellowtail hand roll!!! Luckily I didn't get hurt. My husband had the spicy tuna don and it was ok, a bit over spicy.

  • Rutit P.

From my experience, this place is terrible. They did not initiate our drink orders until about 7 minutes in. We were just there twiddling out thumbs feeling like a neglected, lost children. The annoying part was that there were 2 OTHER CUSTOMERS. It's not like the place was packed. Ugh. The food was awful. Well, at least the tempura udon and the yakisoba. The yakisoba was overly sweet and dry. Ugh. If only I could have washed down the taste with some udon broth, but the tempura udon was under-seasoned with the aftertaste of sink water. What's the deal Sushi Rock!? The salmon and super white nigiri was actually alright, hence the 2 stars. I'm just happy there a lot of good sushi places in Houston because this is a place I will never visit again.

I pass this place at least 5 times a week on my way home from work, but have never felt compelled to try it. It was past dinner time and my bf suggested we have dinner here. It was close, so I obliged. The place was pretty empty at around 8:45 pm on a Monday. We were served right away. Service was attentive; our waters were never empty. We both had bento boxes. They were fine, but nothing special. Total was $30. The only thing that was annoying was that our server brought out my boyfriend's bento box ~7 minutes before mine was ready. We were both starving and he refused to start without me, so it was sort of like torture. This review is sort of ho-hum...just like the restaurant. Overall, a fine neighborhood establishment, but not a place I'd ever bring unfamiliar company.

  • Katherine K.

Not very impressed. Took over an hour to deliver on a Sunday night, and the chicken pad Thai had very little flavor. Still a decent texture, not awful, but not what I was looking for. The search for delicious take out pad Thai continues!

  • J Shayne M.

Two words....NEVER AGAIN!!! I only tried this place because I pass it everyday coming home from work and I was curious about it. Upon my entry, it did not smell fresh inside....that should have been my first clue. But no, I allowed the hostess to seat me. Clue # 2, upon sitting down at my table, the table behind me was sending their food back because they said it the fish was way too strong and tasted bad. Why I did not get up and leave, I still to this day wonder myself. I proceeded to place my order. It came to my table quickly and to me was just average sushi....had better, had sorta worse. Fast forward four hours later........RANCID FOOD POISONING. I will leave out the gory details but let me say.....it was clearly food poising and kept me ill for two or more days. The physician confirmed it was bad food that did it to me. I am an avid sushi fan so I should have know to class it up a little. Let's just say I have learned my lesson.

This is just an okay restaurant. The teriyaki box salmon is a bit dry but decent. The seaweed wrap outside of the handroll was dry and chewy. Pai Thai was pretty good and the services was somewhat okay

Great sushi! Love the Yakisoba! The highlight of my visits here is definitely the Thai Ice Tea.

  • Mike G.

Sushi rock missed every note of the good dining song. As a matter of fact, it didn't even get the words right!! Vegi tempora came with raw batter dripping, sent it back with request for crispy, came back same way. Rice combo smelled like fish, but no fish in it. Main course wasn't palatable either. We do Japanese often, and this was not a good experience. $38 I'll never see again. Avoid!!!

A friend of mine loves it here so we go often. Sushi is good. Service is marginal. Literally, I go here out of peer pressure. LOL. Decent. Not a show stopper.

  • Madeleine W.

Not much to look at and definitely lacking on the ambience side but the food and service were exceptional. Everything we ordered was perfect! I'll definitely keep coming back. Being in an old Taco Bell the restaurant has a very cheap feeling to it, but who cares when the food is great and well priced. Highly recommend the soft shell crab and sashimi.

  • Ana M.

If you're in the mood for excellent, non-pretentious sushi, this is the place. Low key atmosphere with excellent service. The food is fantastic. Recommend their Galveston role for sushi and I always order a fried rice to go.

I like going to this place. Bento box menu has so many to choose from and will fill you up. Great price on sushi ...

  • Yasmin M.

This is not a special occasion-type place. Don't bring your lady friends here on a first date; they will not be impressed. Buut. Always a but. The food is decent and quick. And the happy hour prices are pretty great. I honestly come back because I can get 2pcs of pepper tuna for 2.50. Anywhere else, I can't get it for less than 2$ a piece. And if you're with company who doesn't partake in raw fish, there are plenty of hot Japanese and Thai dishes to eat. The udon soup will not disappoint. While not exceptional, it's close to the med center and, for that, this place will continue to stay on my radar

They have a great happy hour for sushi! Their sushi is always good and fresh. We enjoy coming here for dinner! I recommend trying it! We've taken people here from out of town and they love it!

This place is fantastic. I've been coming here for about 7 years now. The service is always wonderful, the food is delicious, and you can't beat the prices. I'd highly recommended their happy hour and lunchtime specials.

Sushi Rock has a lot of strong pros going for it but also room for improvement. The location is a big reason I go here to satisfy a sushi craving. Coming from the Medical Center, it's a fairly short drive. The restaurant itself is nothing special but cozy. The bathrooms though are in serious need of an update. Wait time was an issue on one visit. We drank one more large sake than we usually do waiting for our rolls. The servers here are top notch. It seemed like the manager was always bowing to me which made me feel a little awkward but like a king! Sushi here is nothing special and lacks variety in the fish and seafood selections but is reasonably priced and fresh. One specialty roll I ate had too much mayo. Another one I really enjoyed. They served us one large house sake in a clear carafe which looked cheap to me (for $6.50) but the taste and temperature was good and warmed my belly. It's not a place for a fantastic sushi dinner but it hits the spot for a sushi lunch.

This is the place I chose for my first time sushi eating experience and it was pretty good. I went during happy hour so the prices weren't too expensive and the service was decent. Happy hour prices are really cheap

Very nice staff, fresh delicious sushi, and amazing prices on the happy hour days. It was our favorite place to eat in Houston.

They have the best Pad Thai here , I know that's weird because it's a hole in the wall but it's true , they give you a huge dressed up portion that's delicious.

  • Derek W.

Lots of reviews so I'll get to the point. If you are a sushi snob avoid this place because you will not understand the hype once your food arrives. It's not the best quality in Houston but its good and it's a great price. Third happy hour is the greatest here the beer and saki is cheap and super good! If you alter any of your happy hour bogo than they won't count it as happy hour just FYI. I would stick to the sushi items because I have not found many kitchen apps or meals I like. Sushi is what to get here. And last I think the Josh W Roll is the best thing on the menu.

  • V W.

Pass by this place from work often but I never went until I had someone recommend for lunch. While I can't say it's horrible I can't give it more than 2 stars because as an avid sushi-ophile this is the equivalent of grocery store sushi. Atmosphere seems marginal, parking lot is laden with pot holes so if the ambience is off too.

    (2)
  • Elías G.

We went there because we had a coupon. We ordered a mix of sushi rolls, the cheese and crab puffs and a tuna roll. All that we had wasn't bad... but neither exceptional... rolls were badly prepared, softened tempura... For this price you can find places much better than this. Service was mediocre and the place is a little bit stincky. First and last time I pass by.

  • Matthew C.

Yes, this place is super cheap, but that can't make up for the abysmal food and service. The waitstaff didn't seem particularly well-trained and seemed very timid when bringing our food, refilling our water glasses, etc. When it came time to order, they were out of the Fried Calamari (which should've been a sign). My friend settled for the Egg Rolls instead. For our main dishes, we had the Chicken Pad Thai and Teriyaki Salmon Bento Box. The miso soup wasn't a great starter. But it was the bento box that really disappointed. The fish didn't seem particularly fresh and had a VERY fishy smell, particularly for the sushi and sashimi. And with raw seafood dishes, you HAVE to use the best and freshest ingredients. The teriyaki chickens seemed a little overcooked as well. My friend wasn't terribly impressed with his food either. I hate giving such low ratings to restaurants, but maybe this will prompt them to improve. It has a great location (right by the medical center) and could do so much better than it currently is.

its good for what it is....a place to shwasted during happy hour. came here with a couple of buddies of mine because we were looking for new sushi places since we are pretty much shunned and banned from ra sushi ( not all that anyway but was our hangout for many years) and let me tell you if you are looking for a pregame spot this is the ticket. food is ok prolly wouldnt bring a hot chick, not even a mild hot chick. maybe a traditional chicken wing one that you are trying to bang if you catch my drift. but for the prices of what you are getting, its not a bad deal at all.

For the money if u buy gift certificate on restaurant.com . its a good deal. Read the small print, u have to spend 100 for 50. Food is good, service is ok.

This is an interesting place...An obvious Pizza Hut turnedi sushi restaurant...Tonight was my first time here after a recommendation to go here over 3 years ago...Just happened be hungry for sushi and driving by...literally did a u-turn and went with an open mind...It was 7 pm on a Friday which everywhere else in Houston is packed....This place was busy but still several tables available... Service - Good attentive...as soon as we walked in the door we were seated and offered the seats we chose Food- Great price, excellent texture and fresh--I had the Shrimp Tempura Bento Box...Great variety and amount of food for 14 bucks....sushi and samishi, california rolls were perfect...Also had spring rolls....they were great I am not a big fan of tofu, but these spring rolls were great... Ambiance- This is where they are lacking...Keep in mind Pizza Hut gone sushi bar....They have done a great job with the space, but the ceilings are low and the floors are slate...Very clean and open space, but during the peak hours you can hear every word of everyone in the entire restaurant.....There was a group of 8 with one really load chick talking over everyone at the table...I think if she was aware that we could here every word she said the entire night she would be embarrassed....She had a potty mouth and had an interesting story about a guy who "could not get it up"....Ughh but unintended humor If you like easy dropping this place it a perfect 10 Price- I will be back....I ordered 2 glasses of wine which boosted the bill, but if I wanted great sushi on a budget I would go here and order water or hot tea....I give them a 4 because I know I will be back and would like go on a random week night when it is less busy.

I've tried this place twice and it's generally low quality. I placed a Togo order and got the wrong roll and my screwed salad was Dried and tough. They'd told me I got the wrong roll because the online menu is wrong. I hate this place. He didn't offer any appeasement.

Great happy hour deals on food. Food was pretty decent - beer and wine only - the restaurant itself is very aged (not dirty but old) - service was good but definitely not a swanky sushi joint. Come here for a low key night with someone you already know well. Don't come here on a first date or when trying to impress someone or if you like really shiny things.

I love the place since its around the corner from my apartment! Food is always good! I mostly order to go and head back to my place, my order is always on time. I have dined in, the place is clean and it does get packed during lunch and dinner hours.

Normally I don't do reviews because I don't want to skew an opinion, but this place is horrible! The nigiri felt like it was a mammal. Service was good, however it better be with only two tables filled. Clearly the owner/chef doesn't care about return customers.

I would never every visit this restaurant again. The quality of the food is TERRIBLE. Yakisoba was SUPER SALTY and GREASY. I felt like I was drinking soy sauce directly. The caterpillar roll here is the WORST caterpillar roll I've every I had. I couldn't believe it was really caterpillar roll. And, again they added too much soy sauce on the sushi that ruin the entire taste of the food. And, it was NOT cheap at all. Pay the same price in Kubo's or Nippon, I can have way better food. Pay the same prince in Oishi, I can have way more food. I can't see how this place can survive with providing such bad quality food and unreasonable price.

Good sushi, good prices, and great service. A friend and I came here for a late lunch just before they closed and were quickly seated. The happy hour/lunch prices are excellent, and the normal menu prices are good as well. The wait staff was extremely helpful, and didn't seem annoyed at having to take the time to describe the different rolls. The sushi itself was very good as well. Parking was not a problem. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the Medical Center area!

First visited today for lunch and it was pretty good. You can always tell if the sushi is going to be good by way the rice looks and tastes. They got the rice down! I had the chicken teriyaki bento box; $8.95 lunch special consisted of small salad, miso soup, chicken teriyaki, 4piece cali roll, 3 piece sushi (2-red snapper and 1-salmon), and side of white rice (sticky--yum). It was really good. I would have to try this place out again. See pics! Pros: Taste, specials, location w/ parking, attentive staff, and price Cons: So far none to report The place didn't look packed...maybe it was the day I went or a hidden little treasure.

This review will not be as involved as I normally make them. I just passed this place the other day and realized that I never wrote a review from when I visited. When I say visited, that's not entirely accurate. My boyfriend and I got a coupon off restaurant.com and decided to take a trip to this restaurant. The waiter finally acknowledged us and came over and dropped off two menus and a couple waters. We chatted for a sec and as I opened the menu, I noticed that some friends crawled out of the menu. That would be roach friends. We politely collected our phones and headed for the door. Need I say more.

Sushi was decent (hokkaido and oishii level) but service was HORRIBLE. I gave this place a shot because of a coupon voucher. It took my waiter forever to get it through and he totally forgot I was even there during my meal. I tried their house special doughnut dessert and was completely disappointed. It was just a fancy name for deep fried flour--I can't even call them beignet.

Poor rating for quality and originality of rolls. Fish seemed anemic. At least there's a huge parking lot. Too bad no one is ever in it.

I normally never craved sushi till I went to this place. Being vegetarian, this place makes it possible for me to enjoy sushi. Even friends have switched from the meat variety to the veggie ones. The fact is sushi is the worst value for food out there. I can't imagine anyone feeling satisfied with just one roll ($8). After enjoying 2 rolls or more, the bill at the end sure makes it difficult to digest it. (-1 star) Damn, now i'm craving it now as I type this...

It took me 4 years to return for my second visit at Sushi Rock. I don't remember the reason why it took me a while to come back. I don't remember the food or service being horrible the first time. Anyhow, I was back this week. My friend and I picked this place because it was somewhat close to her office in the Med Center. The place wasn't packed then again I did arrive around early lunchtime ~ 11:30. Right off the bat, we decided to get fried calamari for appetizer while looking at the lunch menu. The fried calamari came out quick. The batter was decent, but the sauce was good. It was just a plain Thai-styled sweet and sour dipping sauce. Nevertheless, the combo of fried calamari and the Thai sauce seemed to go well together. We decided to skip the Thai lunch special and went for the Sushi combo. My friend ordered 2-roll sushi special @ 8.95 I opted for the 3-roll sushi special @ 11.95. The lunch special came with miso soup and salad. The miso soup was a little salty but OK. The salad dressing was a little sweet, but OK also. The rolls that we selected were spider roll (both of us opted for this), crunchy roll (bread crumb and fish that I can't recall), tempura roll, and philly roll (cream cheese and salmon) . I can't say that they were great or horrible. I would say they were supermarket-quality on taste. The portion though was generous. I was really hungry before lunch but I couldn't finish my order. I had more than half a roll of sushi left on my plate. Over all, I would say this place is average in all areas - food, service, and ambience. However, the amount of sushi served was more than I expected. The fried calamari with Thai dipping sauce was the highlight of the meal. All and all, I give Sushi Rock 3 stars.

Findings: 1. Ambiance - The exterior does not match the interior. If you've been to other sushi places - Miyako's, etc. It's close to matching the internal decor of those places. They have barriers to make group outings a more private experience. (As in, it's not one big open room like Miyako's). They have a sushi bar as well. 2. Parking - Ample lot parking outside. 3. Price - Regular prices are similar to happy hour prices at other sushi places. See impression. $5-8 a roll. Did not take heed of prices of other items on the menu. 4. Food/Drink - There is a wide variety of rolls and they bring the food out quickly. See impression. 5. Staff - Attentive, nothing out of the ordinary - good or bad. Impression: 1. I went here with a few friends expecting inferior quality sushi just to fill us up but we were decently surprised. You can taste the difference in the quality, but it's still pretty good, especially for the price. We sampled much of the cheaper rolls, and that may have contributed to the lesser quality. 2. Comparing the normal prices of Sushi Rock with Miyako's happy hour, the prices are similar, but the rolls are a little bit smaller. 3. Again, the interior is much nicer than it seems on the outside. 4. I would come here to fulfill a sushi craving, but don't expect to have a top notch experience. 5. I would not bring a date here.

We went to this place last night and first of all, beware of the happy hour menu. They have happy hour on Monday and Tuesday nights and what might be all weekend, but it's really not all that clear. We thought it was happy hour and ordered from the menu and were unpleasantly surprised when the check came. I actually ordered off of the happy hour menu while pointing at the items on that portion of the menu, so I sort of wish that the waitress had pointed out to us that there was no happy hour at that time. It averaged about $20 each for a meal that definitely wasn't worth it. The udon my friend ordered wasn't good, the sushi was loosely rolled, and the rest of it just wasn't all that impressive. It cost as much or more than Zake, had much slower service (they had a lot of trouble with our check), and the food was half as good at best. So.... I'd say avoid it.

I have been here a handful of times and always want to go "outside the box" but end up getting some of my favorites-- Shaggy Dog and Crunch Roll--YUM I have looked at the other menu items but I always just get sushi!

I've been visiting this place for a while and enjoy their lunch specials, but my experience the other day reminded me that I needed to Yelp them. A lunchtime meeting had held way over and I was starving when I arrived at 2:50 pm. I forgot that Sushi Rock closes from 3-5, so when I entered and noticed that sign, I started to turn back. Before I could leave, the guys welcomed me in with absolutely no hesitation and served me with smiles. That's the kind of place I can do business with.

It's not the best sushi you'll ever get, but it'll likely come close for far less than you'd otherwise pay! As mentioned, the atmosphere is a little off since it is likely a converted Pizza Hut, but otherwise this place is a gem. Very quick service, great food, great prices. Try it, they have a coupon on restaurant.com . I'd be surprised if you aren't impressed.

Really terrible food. My first sushi experience in Houston was here years ago. The sushi made me worry for my health! Recently I went here again because I was so impressed by the fact that they are still in business. The food was gross!

As far a sushi goes, this place was myeh. They have a wide selection and the price is ok, but the fish itself is not, in my opinion, of great quality. The salmon tasted kind of off, the salmon roe was kind of dried out, the squid was flavorless and hard, and the seaweed salad was not altogether tasty. I really wanted to like this place. The location is very convenient to the Texas Medical Center and the atmosphere is nice enough for a cheap sushi joint. They did see, to have a nice selection of beers and it wasn't too crowded. Unless a large group of people I was with wanted to go back or it was someone's birthday and they really wanted to go, I don't think I'd ever go back. Two stars, dude.

Love this place! Totally unappreciated, reasonably-priced sushi and thai food in the medical center. I eat there/pick up pad thai at least twice a month.

Sushi rock is a decent neighborhood sushi place. Staff are attentive. Food quality is decent and the rolls are tasty. Price is decent for the amount of food you get. Come here if you want sushi and you live in the area and don't want to stray too far.

I feel like Sushi Rock is one of the best kept secrets in Houston. The name of the place along with the actual building (an old Pizza Hut) seem like they should equal disaster for a Sushi joint. Luckily that is not the case! The interior is casual but clean. You can sit at the bar if you want. They have some great specials. This place is far better than Azuma or Osaka (vomit) which seem to be local favorites, though I can't understand why. Not as good as Kubo or Sushi Raku, but not as expensive either.

When I first walked into the converted Pizza Hut, I wasn't expecting much! First impressions were proven incorrect and now I visit a couple times a month. Sushi Rock is famous in the Medical Center for their Playboy Rolls (try the Sea of Love, Volcano, and off the menu Crazy Crunch rolls too). I haven't tried their sashimi or Thai dishes, so can't make a recommendation regarding them. The wait staff is fantastic, the two main waiters often play tag team to ensure that each diner's every need is anticipated. They're great about making substitutions too. At the end of the meal, Henry will often send out delicious donuts to finish.

OMG. Don't walk away from this place... RUN. Run far and run fast. I really, really, really love sushi, so it takes something amazingly, incredibly horrible for me to not eat my food. I couldn't bring myself to finish anything; in fact, I was praying that I wouldn't get sick from some of it. None of the fish was fresh and it all had that super-fishy taste. Their idea of sashimi was (I kid you not) little cubes (cubes!!) of non-sashimi-grade fish. I could have done *way* better buying some fish from Whole Foods and slicing it on my own. Never, ever go here if you value the contents of your intestines.

Don't judge a book by its cover. The outside looks like crap but....they have good food. First let me start by saying that I have eaten sushi in just about every where because I LOVE sushi. From Boston to California, to Paris. Anywhere I visit I eat sushi. With that said this place is good. It is not super fancy and the rolls are simple but good. I really like this place because I eat sushi a lot and it doesn't put a hole in your pocket, well at least not as deep a hole. If you are looking for fair priced sushi and dont care much about the atmosphere this is the place to go. I dont know why the other reviewer had such a terrible time. Like I said i know my sushi and they have never failed me yet. I usually order sashimi too. The waiter are very nice too. You will always see the same guys there.
