The Sunflower Bakery was more than what I expected being in Galveston. It exceeded my expectations! They have legit and fresh coffee and the most mouth watering food. My all time fav is Eggs Benedict. They make it exceptionally well. Whether it's paired with fried crab, fried oysters or on anything. It's all so flavorful. The gift shop is cute, but wish they had more stuff than just antiques. The bakery looks AMAZING and the canned jars section set up is cute and clean. Bright yellow walls and nice set up they have. Literally I have been here 4 times since July and I'll always stop here for breakfast or brunch even if I have to drive a ways. It's that good!!!!

Painfully slow. Kitchen doesn't appear to be proportioned to the number of tables. Loud, of course per the tile floor and wood ceiling. Ha, and then cold when it got to our table Never again.

I loved eating here! It might've been the best breakfast I've ever had. (Can't remember the dishes name--it had eggs, hollandaise, smoked chicken...yum). We sat out on the patio on a storm-cooled summer morning. It was heavenly! Our waiter was just perfect. So friendly! He recommended the pineapple lemonade to my daughter, and she loved it. Definitely going back next time we're in Galveston!

Great breakfast, fantastic service! Seriously, after a night out with a couple too many adult beverages we NEEDED some good breakfast food. So glad we tried this place out! Eggs were a good portion, bacon was thick and tasty, and the potatoes were BOMB! Waitstaff was extremely friendly and accommodating and kept the coffee coming! Would love to check them out for lunch or dinner, but when on the island why not indulge in seafood! Will definitely be back for breakfast!

Very charming spot for breakfast! I had the crab cakes and eggs - very good, which came with smashed potatoes and your choice of toast (I chose their fresh-baked jalapeno cheddar toast). The food was great, the coffee was hot, the service was perfect. We showed up around 9 and got one of the last tables, when we left there was a pretty substantial line if you wanted to sit inside. It's definitely a popular place! It felt like a place locals prefer - definitely not touristy!!!

Decided to stop here after debarking from the Carnival Magic and am so glad we did! The service was on point with friendly staff (Louie) that not only made sure our dining experience was great, but that our Galveston experience was great! I got the Belgin waffle and was happily surprised to find out it had fresh strawberry butter and pure maple syrup. It was so amazing and melted in your mouth! Hubby got the chicken fried steak and eggs and the batter was so light and crispy I wanted to finish his too! Will be going again!!

One of our favorite breakfast spots in Galveston. Everything you get here is good. We were there on Sunday for the Belgian waffle, and it wasn't as good as I though I would be...especially for 7 bucks. It was about as good as a hotel waffle at the continental breakfast, to be honest. My omelet was really good and the pancake was too (although it was small). I had a cinnamon roll to go and it was awesome! The only reason I gave a 4 was because of the waffle flavor and size of the pancake.

Been here about four or five times and it's definitely worth it. They have tons of delicious options on the menu. One time I got a BBQ potato, today I got the soup. My mom ordered a soft shell crab sandwich, which was a little on the pricey side, but definitely worth it! We sat at the community table because we didn't want to wait, and it wasn't bad at all. We got to know those around us, and had a pleasant experience. Parking is a problem and you do have to park on the street a little bit away, because they have very limited parking. There are two dessert cases and everything is made from scratch. Today I decided to get a cheesecake bar and it was delicious. My mom got the coffee cake which I didn't try because it had nuts in it and I'm allergic. It was rather cold where we sat and that's why I only gave them 4 stars. But worth it!

What a great place for breakfast. Local favorite. The wait can be a bit long, but definitely worth it. The shop with local artists work is a nice touch to browse while your wait. Found an awesome local artist Justin Dring who had seashore wildlife originals. Will be back next time we are in Galveston.

It really pains me to have to write this. If you've seen my last review, you know I LOVE this place. Only complaint I ever had was the service. Our first time there, it was some of the worst service I've ever had. However, as my review states, the next time we went, they had all new servers and the service was GREAT. Now, I have been 2 or 3 times after that, and am right back to square one with them. Every time after that 2nd GREAT visit, has been the same. Both times, we have waited about 20 minutes for a table. That, I don't care about one bit. What I do care about is that both times, our server didn't come to the table for AT LEAST 10 minutes, and that is after we have already been waiting 20 minutes just to get a table! We're just sitting there looking around, clearly trying to locate a server, but no one stops to help. If you've ever been a server, you know that even if it's not your table, you can greet the table and take drink orders for them really fast. Nope, never happens here. So, once the server finally comes around and takes our order, he's clearly rushed. I don't even finish talking when he starts walking away. I added onto my order and he was already a table away when I was like, "Uh, I'm still ordering." The food comes out quick, that's never an issue. However, this last time, we needed napkins. Server said he'd get them. And he did, about 20 minutes later when we were practically finished eating. We had maybe 2 or 3 bites left. Don't exactly need those napkins anymore. He dropped our food and did not come back until he dropped the check. No "2-bite checkback" and no refills on our drinks (we had to get another server to fill our water). Every time my girlfriend and I go, we get a Belgian waffle with fruit on the side, as my gf doesn't like fruit. Every time EXCEPT that one great time I mentioned in my first review, they have screwed it up and put it on top of the waffle. Maybe if you weren't already leaving my table before I was done ordering, you would get the order right. So, our server came to get our drinks, take our order, drop the food, and then dropped the check. Absolutely nothing in-between. I hate to write this because the food is exceptional. I have loved everything I have eaten there. I love the space, the ambiance, the vibe. But, they need to step their service up ASAP. Go through the reviews here, and anyone could see that service is a problem. I'm guessing that management doesn't check or care about their Yelp, because if they did, they would solve the problem.

This place is awesome. Here are the basics: Food: Awesome--had the lump crab omelet and took some goodies from the bakery to go. The potatoes are yummiriffic! Seating: Sort of crammed (and it was Sunday morning so it was super packed) Parking: limited (just be aware) Wait: about 30 minutes (not too bad) Service: Ok for the most part. The server seemed to come by at awkward times--or maybe our eating to drinking time ratio was off. (Came by when drinks were full; and when we had not even taken a bite of food yet) ***************************************************** I love the little shop inside. A lot of interesting things that you won't see anywhere else. Good way to pass the time while waiting for your table.

The food was good but not worth the Sunday breakfast/brunch hassle. The place was packed which is usually a good sign and although we were prepared to wait, the hostess was a witch. Made for a horrible first impression and if it had been my choice, we would have left right then. Instead we waited over 30 minutes to be seated. Our party of five was cramped at a small table and it took a while for the server to arrive. Although it was busy, they almost seemed overwhelmed. She was friendly but inaccurate and never topped off drinks, not even the empty coffee cup at the edge of the table screaming for a refill. Food took forever to arrive; we actually wondered if the waitress had forgotten to put in our order. As I stated before, the food was good but not good enough to put up with the aggravation.

A perfectly quaint and hopping breakfast spot! We had great service throughout our experience and this was highlighted by our server's reaction when I sent my food back. She handled it perfectly. I ordered the Eggs Benedict with crab cakes and the yolk was cooked through. I hesitantly brought it up to our server and she immediately apologized and within minutes I had another plate with perfectly cooked eggs. Top notch! I understand things can go wrong in a kitchen and I won't ding you if you make it right. Sunflower handled it professionally and provided an excellent dining experience. Easily our best breakfast to date on the island.

This place was more than eye candy. The bakery items looked amazing. But food made you want to come back. We went here for breakfast. A classic breakfast was order( bacon, eggs, toast, potatoes, sorry forgot the name they called it) Crab cakes and eggs, and pancakes. We left our plates clean. The crab tasted fresh eggs were perfect and the holidaise sauce was light and creamy. The pancakes were large and fluffy. Their breakfast potatoes were cooked in bacon grease. They are really good. Go here for breakfast!!!

What a neat little restaurant and bakery! Different from the typical island restaurants. You can come to pick up something from the bakery or dine in their nice atmosphere. They have a sizable menu with different items from seafood, to sandwiches, pancakes, omelettes, and more. We got the 3 pancakes (choice of plain, strawberry, pecan, or blueberry). Some of the best pancakes I've ever had! You can also buy their own mix there. We also had the crab cakes and shrimp which were excellent. They have lots of things in the bakery: a variety of breads, cookies, croissants, pies and other pastries. Service was good. It was late lunch on a Sunday afternoon, but this place was booming with business. I can see why though!

We had a great breakfast here, but looking at the menu made us want to come back sometime for lunch or dinner. (They're open until 8 Friday & Saturday.) It gets busy here for breakfast on the weekends. In addition to the regular breakfast menu with tasty pancakes and such, weekend brunch offers mimosas and things like crab omelettes and crab cakes and eggs. There's a full bakery with cookies, cakes, and pies. It's pretty awesome.

I kind of think I should almost write 2 reviews. I came here yesterday for brunch with my wife on are 1st anniversary. We understood before we headed here that we would be in for a little wait. We ate outside and our waitress was terrific and the food was great. I got the big breakfast my wife got a waffle. The scrambled eggs were amazing some of the best I've ever had. I was a little disappointed that while the waffles are served with some amazing real maple syrup, the pancakes are served with log cabin. Luckily my wife was gracious enough to share some of this amazing syrup with me. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her Belgian waffles which was served covered in whipped cream and fresh fruit. Perfect brunch on a Sunday. Waitress was awesome 5 star service and food. We returned Monday because of all things the scrambled eggs. The lack of wait was refreshing, but our waiter was definitely a step below our previous one. The scrambled eggs were just as delicious as they have ever been. But the pancakes were mediocre at best. It also didn't help that we had to use the log cabin syrup. Fresher pancakes and real syrup would have made up for the lesser service quality. As an aside I understand parking sucks, that's just a given at almost every restaurant on the island. It would be nice on days where you know it will be busy aka the weekends if you served food in that area in the gift shop where you have tables and a bar. Bar stools would we fun. We will definitely return on our next visit to the island.

Five stars because of the amazing service. I don't eat eggs (allergy-related) and while most wait staff at other restaurants give me a hard time about substituting, our waitress patiently talked me through the menu options, ultimately helping me order one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. Too bad I'm only in town visiting or else I would come back every weekend for breakfast.

Great food but 30min to sit and 45 to get 2 omelets. Great food once we got it but they have got to work on their service during busy times. I'm sure during the middle of the week this would be an amazing place to go to.

  • Ronald D.

I have been eating here on a regular basis since my original review, and I'm now fully convinced that this is the best breakfast joint on the Island... I've moved on from the Eggs Benedict and Salmon to Eggs Benedict with Fried Oysters - OUTSTANDING! I have yet been for lunch and I really don't even know if they serve dinner, and at this time, I don't really care since I am locked in on BREAKFAST. However it seems reasonable that their sandwiches must be banging since their baked goods our great as well and good bread is integral to a killer sandwich. So do what I do, go for breakfast and sleep the day away on the beach.

4 1/2 stars! Cute resturant, nice patio, great brunch menu with an equally well diverse food menu. This place was packed for Sunday bunch around noon yet I was immediately sat. I ended up letting another couple have my table bc I wanted to wait for a patio table (extra 30min wait but we didn't mind) I was excited to see crab cakes Benedict on their menu and they were fab! My friend ordered the Carne Asada and he liked it but his only suggestion would be to add a little kick of spice. Perfect portions, good flavor and cheap priced mimosas makes me give this place 2 thumbs up =) Louie was an excellent waiter too, very polite and professional. Our only suggestion would be, to maybe in the future, add some cooler misters out on the patio for those epic hot and humid Texas summer days. And if you have a sweet tooth, make sure you stop by their bakery and pick up a beautiful dessert.

I have loved this place in the past. Super cute quaint little brunch place with a nice patio to sit outside and drink mimosas. In my previous visits I've always had great service. However, my last visit was the worst I have ever had. Our party of two was told it would be 20-25 minutes for a table and we were not sat for 35. Then when we were sat, it took the waiter 5 minutes to come to our table and we ordered right away. It then took over 40 minutes for our food to be delivered. Needless to say we will not be returning. The food is not worth all the useless waiting you will be doing.

Oh how the mighty have fallen! The first time I ate brunch here six years ago it was nothing short of fabulous. I've eaten here literally dozens of times since that first brunch. I came for brunch this past Sunday and left knowing I would not return. Where to start... I had salmon with poached eggs and hollandaise, breakfast potatoes and wheat toast. The salmon was woefully over-cooked as were the poached eggs and I'm pretty sure the copious amount of hollandaise slopped over it all was supposed to disguise the fact. The breakfast potatoes were a surprise. The last time I had them they were diced potatoes, pan-fried in butter with the pieces ranging from soft to crispy, well seasoned and wonderful. Sunday I got a plate of mangled new potatoes with the skins which ranged from crunchy (not quite cooked) to extra crunchy (picking out burnt pieces of potato & skin) to mealy mush, all of which was under-seasoned and vaguely nauseating. To be fair, the wheat toast was decent. On the visit prior to Sunday's, I ordered the wild mushroom omelet. The mushrooms were not well washed and were gritty and what little water was used to wash them was not drained properly and I wound up with a soggy, gritty, cold mess. If you have to eat there, I recommend sticking to the very basic menu items. I'm happy to say my friend's Belgian waffle was fairly tasty if a bit under-done. It pains me to write this because Sunflower has been the place for many happy brunches for me and my family and friends. I'll miss it.

It was my first time eating here with 4 years of living in Galveston! I do think The Sunflower Bakery holds a reputation among locals, and to this I can attest. Walking in, you are greeted with smiles and directed to their beautifully decorated dining halls. We loved the interior of the place! It held such a home-y and warm feeling. The service we got from Peter was great. He's a brilliant worker! The bakery section of the restaurant is right to a corner of the dining halls. It was filled with delicious-looking cakes, pastries, cookies... oh the wonders of the world. We tried the lemon meringue for dessert and oh my god... I loved it. For $5-something a slice, it was totally worth it. I asked the cashier and she said one of the whole strawberry cakes were for only $30-something. Greatly priced. They sell fresh loaves of bread (Pumpernikel, 7 Grain, Honey Wheat, Jalapeno-Cheddar... etc) for only $4. I think I've had enough of Walmart bread! There is an antique/collection store connected to the restaurant. I thought this was very unique and I had a look around while waiting for food. Now through my gracious ranting of my newfound love for the place--why only 3 stars? Well, let me start by saying I think as I frequent my visits here, I will develop a better rating for the restaurant, and this for sure wouldn't be my last review. The coffee, I think, was a little... eh. And the fact that they are given in mugs that don't really do a good job in conserving their heat certainly doesn't help. I understand it's the winter season now, but my coffee went from hot to lukewarm, to cold in a flash! Now to the food: My dad got the smoked salmon and eggs. That. Was. FANTASTIC. I was so jealous about it. I will be back to solo it. My mom got the andouille sausage frittata (or something of the name...) i didn't hear any complains from her, so I'll assume it was okay lol. My sister got the chicken and waffles. We compared it to the one served at the Porch Cafe, and she said this one at the Sunflower was a little bit below the bar than the one at the Porch. I got the spinach quiche with a fruit cup. I am a lover of quiche, but this one really left more to be desired. It was awfully bland. Not enough onions, and not enough flavor. The texture was good, but the flavor really lacked in strength. Maybe it was just a bad day, but I'd love an improvement on the quiche. So overall, I loved my first time here. Count me in to be a regular, and I'm sure my view of the place (and the food) will, hopefully, only keep on improving!

I don't often give 5 star reviews but this place deserves it. Wonderful food(seriously delicious), and amazing service. Our server kept our drinks full at all times, and that's not an exaggeration! Coffee is fresh, and the decor is pleasant. If you're on the fence about what to get, the smoked chicken hash or the bread pudding French toast are the ways to go. You will not be disappointed that you came here!!

My husband and I visited this place for the first time on our honeymoon. After we got up at the crack of dawn to watch the sunrise on the beach, we tried to find a place also open at the crack of dawn to get breakfast- Sunflower it was! Our meal was delicious and memorable. When we returned a few months later, it was a must visit. My food, chicken, potatoes, eggs, hollandaise sauce was warm, hearty and flavorful. The coffee was delicious. The patio was inviting, and made me want to spend many more lazy days sitting on it. It was late in the day on Friday, and the place was packed. Im sure we will make more stops here any time we are in town. One note- they have an amazing case of every dessert imaginable ( but nothing gluten free--- please get one thing so I can indulge too? :)

I ate here on my honeymoon in May. I returned in October with family. This is my favorite breakfast spot in Galveston and beats anything in Austin. Absolutely love their pastries, the hollandaise sauce, the crab cakes, and their brunch menu. So good.

It's a happy mess during the week end. The entire island seems to be there for breakfast. Large crowds and long waits. They are not the greatest pastry chefs, but croissants are Ok.

This is THE BEST brunch you can get in Galveston. Pleasant environment of old Galveston without the beach bar crowd. The crab cakes and various benedicts are to die for. Also, make sure to buy their Focaccia loafs. Slice it like pizza, butter both sides and toast on a pan until golden. This is still my favorite bread in the world since I was in middle school.

When traveling one should explore new places to eat, rather than eating at a chain restaurant that can be found within a mile of where you live. That was what we were doing when we visited The Sunflower Bakery! The menu was filled with unique dishes that tempted the palate. The staff were friendly and quick to seat us and take our order, and the food arrived fast and hot. After lunch we stopped by the bakery and got a brownie and a tart and sat on the patio enjoying them. Sunflower is well worth your time to find and enjoy!

Great little place. This is my favorite place for breakfast/brunch within about 30 minutes of Clear Lake. Parking is a little weak but that's pretty much anywhere in Galveston. My wife and like to do brunch here from time to time and the experience has always been really good. Wait staff is usually polite and timely and the food is always good. I usually get the "Small Breakfast" which is one meat (ham or sausage I believe), eggs your way, toast and potatoes. It's usually way more food than I typically eat, especially when you add in the pastries that they have. Their pastries are pretty awesome and we always share one between the two of us.

This place is a gem! We stopped by after finding it on yelp. We split the stuffed avocado (stuffed with chicken salad), it was really good and very fresh. We also had a couple of cookies, which were delicious. I only wish we had more time to try their selection baked goods, everything looked amazing. If we are back in the area, we'll most definitely be visiting again.

I sooo wanted badly, to love this place. We own a condo so we are making our go to list for all our renters and friends as well as ourselves, whom eat out all the time, and stay 1 week a month. We ordered, big breakfast with sausage. Please... DO NOT ORDER the sausage. Omg it stunk like it was rancid, a thick patty that was dry, my hubby never sends anything back, ever, never ever, however he told the waitress, and I quote, THIS IS GROSS. He got bacon which was very good. His pancakes came out slightly burned and very dry, cold. He did not enjoy the experience. I ordered eggs Benedict. They were pretty good, but the potatoes that came with it were very undercooked, crunchy, ok nasty. The ham had an extreme smokiness to them that was off putting kind of expected Canadian bacon, but this was more like slabs of ham. It would have been great as a side with eggs, but the lemony buttery hollandaise sauce didn't mesh with the smoky flavor, still, cooked well, eggs poached to perfection, and mine was hot. Son ordered Challah french toast. WOW, BEST FRENCH TOAST ON EARTH. This alone might get me back. His came out piping hot and moist, delishes. Once it gets cold it's not good, I think it's something that could be purchased as a side and share when ordering the small breakfast instead of those horrible pancakes. Youngest kid ordered kids eggs, pancake, bacon breakfast. He ate it all he's not picky, but his pancake tasted like it was made 4 hours earlier and reheated slightly, dried out and hard. The syrup that's aunt Jemima, sitting cold on the table helped him eat it, but I'd have sent it back. Yes I'm a bit picky when paying 50.00 for breakfast for 3 1/2 people, it's not McDonald's. It should be piping hot, fresh and pretty much well above average. This was not. Also it was raining very hard, and they had airconditioning blasting cold. In June people where shivering, all were damp anyway from recent downpour, and really miserable. The airs situated to be in middle of the room with vents blowing onto every single table. This was probably the worst thing of all. It was miserable. We asked, since weather had dropped temp into low 80s outdoors, if the airconditioning could be turned up a little. The waitress, who was otherwise very nice and attentive, gave us a huge spill, of, well you could ask all you want, but the manager will NEVER TURN IT DOWN EVER. So we dealt with it. Oh...don't order a coke and expect refills, you get a 12 ounce can, apple juice came in a container as well instead of a glass. Kinda weird. Again, it's ok. It's not knock my socks off good, and it wasn't worth 50.00 before tips.

BEST EGGS BENEDICT EVER!!!! I'm an eggs Benedict connoisseur. I order them at every restaurant I can find them in. The menu reads homemade Canadian bacon and hollandaise sauce with 2 poached eggs on a fresh baked English muffin. The eggs were a bit under runny but still delicious. The homemade Canadian bacon, English muffin, and hollandaise sauce are so good that they could substitute rocks for the eggs and I would still give it 4 stars!!! I have had this dish in some of the finest restaurants and in some of the most hole-in-the-wall greasy-spoons... this place is my new standard, by which all others will be judged.

We're always a part of the early crowd, so we got there during a weekday morning. Not a lot of wait for a table obviously, and the service was speedy and excellent. I tried the crabcake Benedict which they call crab cakes and eggs and it was to date the best Benedict I've had so far. My wife's breakfast was cooked perfectly, with everything being good and crispy where it's supposed to be.

Eh. Admittedly, I had high expectations for this place! But my quiche was dry and old and the fruit was not as fresh I'd have liked. My breakfast companion said the Crabcake Benedict breakfast was good!

Waited 20 minutes past their guess of 20-25 minutes. When we finally sat down it took too long for service. When a place is this busy help the employment situation and spring for a few more servers and cooks. Ordered eggs over medium and they came very runny and under cooked. Greasy sausage. Dry over cooked pancakes. Did not even have real butter. Focus less on profit and more on product. IHOP has this type of breakfast down.

Great strawberry mimosas! Freshly squeezed! Excellent bacon and waffles with the best flavored butter. Eggs however you want! Very fresh and delicious! Bakery there too- looks great- tried it once and it was ok. Long wait on weekends but worth it! Fave breakfast place on island. Farley Girls very good too but I prefer here!

Went for breakfast and was a little busy but short wait. Had a basic plate of eggs, bacon, potatoes and white toast. Bacon was awesome, thick and cooked correctly. Potatoes were average at best. The big surprise was the toast was not really toast. More like they put it on the grill for a few. Plus was not buttered. I would go back but would try one the specials instead of the plain egg plate.

Locally owned restaurant where everything is homemade and just delicious. The tomato basil soup is seriously the best I've ever had. It comes with crusty homemade bread too! The bowl is HUGE. I eat that for my meal. My family has also tried many of the sandwiches, crab cakes with eggs Benedict for brunch, choc chip pancakes--wow, and grilled chicken sandwich with fries. There is an unbelievable bakery there too if you have room! Super nice staff too. This is a Galveston MUST eat!

We recently had our retreat catered by Sunflower Bakery after hearing rave reviews. Since we usually order pizza, I was looking forward to the change even though I'm not a huge sandwich person. To be honest, I was expecting a bit more. My sandwich was pretty simple (though with all the meat piled up in the center which required some maneuvering so that I could actually have more than just bread with my bites around the outside edges), but they somehow gave me plain white bread when I requested another type. There were a few other orders that had mistakes on it and I've heard that this is the norm. On the upside, they were right on time with delivery (actually about 10 minutes early) and the owners themselves delivered. My cookie was phenomenal and even four hours later, it was incredibly moist and soft. I'm not sure I'd ever make this my first choice in dining, but I'd be willing to give them another go to wow me. The salads looked good, but not good enough to hurry over and check them out. **************************************** Okay, so after hearing more and more about how great the food is here, I decided to give it another go and forget about getting a sandwich. Upon the recommendation of a coworker, I ended up with the crab cakes and couldn't have been happier. They were delicious, flakey, and well seasoned--though a little on the fishy side. My mashed potatoes were heavenly, except that they were cold. My grilled veggies were fabulous and I had no problem munching down on something that was actually healthy. Course I topped it off with a side of french fries (delicious). Despite the food being a much better experience this time around, I still cannot give them another star since the service was atrocious. Though our server was nice, the wait was ridiculous. We were seated outside and waited almost 10 minutes before we even had our drink order taken. Since it had taken her so long, we went ahead and ordered our food right then. Our crab cakes took about 30 minutes, my fries took another 20 minutes, and then our waitress was MIA. Not truly since we saw her with other tables, but she somehow managed to not see us trying to flag her down for ketchup at first and then just for our check. We finally ask her for the check and 15 minutes later, have to flag down another waiter to ask him to ask her for our check. By the time she comes, we just hand the credit card over in hopes of speeding up the process. It takes yet another 10 minutes before we get our receipt to sign. What should've been just a half an hour lunch turned into a huge ordeal and wasted a lot of our afternoon. I don't think I'd ever come back unless it is to get a pick up order.

To describe this place...near the Strand, but parking at a meter wasn't necessary. Yay! But, parking was not easy. I had to circle the block twice and settle for a spot that I didn't really know was legal or not. It's in the middle of a neighborhood with super interesting-looking Galveston-like houses, which sparks my interest. I wish I had a house next to this place. It was good! I wish I wasn't charged extra for the chips that came with my egg salad sandwich, but I can look past that. The fruit I ordered was good. Pineapple, fresh melon, one strawberry cut in half, and a slice of watermelon. There could have been more fruit, but I won't complain that much. They had sodas, both the basic kind and the tutti-frutti Jones soda. I chose a canned Diet Coke, which cost too much. My total bill was $12.72, kinda pricey for a sandwich at lunch time. Their desserts were all too tempting and I still wish I had gotten one. They also had yummy looking fresh bread to take home. I'll have to make the special trip to buy a loaf soon! I will definitely go back and do recommend it...just be aware of the parking.

Horrible and rude waiters. Food did not taste that good. Bakery is better but most places that's the case. I live in Galveston and have been here a few times and have have noticed that the service has been getting worse and so rude that it feels it is a bother to be coming to this place. Be wary especially if you are a colored person to come in here.

This place is a nice distraction from the other lunch places around galveston, but I would defeinitely not eat there often. During lunch it is positively PACKED and service suffers terribly for it. Their menu is adequate but not large, although I did enjoy what I have eaten there in the past. Their bread is great, much better overall than their actual food fare. Eat here only on the off-hours, seriously. They have a nice patio, which I think gets slightly slower service than the inside but your ears will thank you.

Yum! Every time we are here it is delicious and I love shopping while I wait! I would definitely recommend people checking this place out for breakfast!

Great food, waitstaff, and atmosphere. We wanted the Belgian Waffles but they only serve those on Saturday and Sunday(we came on Monday-bummer). Settled for pancakes with a side of bacon and it was delicious! We will be back...next time on the weekend!

Had breakfast and it was really good. The bacon was the best bacon I have ever had. The coffee was fantastic as well. Worth the wait. And you will wait.

The food here is amazing! I was not expecting this place to have great fried foods but I was wrong. I'd recommend the Shrimp Po Boy. It's one of the better ones I've tried. It also comes with French fries. They have a large variety of desserts but we didn't get any. We also had an excellent waiter

Our plan was to go to the Mosquito Café but it was closed on Monday, so we came here as an alternative. I am so glad we made this our stop because not only was the place nicely presentable, The food and desserts were fashionably tasteful. The waffles are big and their portions of food were enough for two. They have selections of seasoning and desserts and other food items for sale, too.

I loved this cafe. My husband and I had a late lunch so we missed the crowd. The service was great and prompt. The atmosphere is cozy and cute. Airy. The food was great! I got the cuban on white bread. Besides not being on cuban bread, it was one of the best cubans I've had. (I'm from South Florida where cuban restaurants are everywhere. And its my favorite sandwhich, so I've eaten lots of cubans). Simple sandwhich made with quality ingredients. My husband had a special of the day. Mac n cheese with shrimp. That was equally as great. The sauce had onions and tomatoes to add some depth of flavor. Shrimp were prefect. We both had the strawberry lemonade. I'd recommend it. My husband watered his down a bit but that's just his taste. The flavor was perfect. Additionally the fries were suler crunchy and I could have eaten way more of their coleslaw. It is creamy and sweet yet lighly dresses. Loved it. I also took so goodies from the bakery. The eclair was yummy. We also had some cookies. They were just ok. And my husband did not really enjoy his scone. Overall we appreciated the quality ingredients. We will definitely be back.

Absolutely a must if you are in Galveston. We had Big Breakfast, Migas, and French toast. Deserts, pies, and pastries are made fresh daily and are awesome. Service was great too. We were there on a Monday around 11:00am.

Great food at a great price! The atmosphere is friendly. The service was great. The wait for our order to arrive seem long but worth the wait. We had the Belgium waffle & the Big Breakfast. Both were fabulous. We went traditional but wish we had ordered from the brunch menu. Will have to come back.

I look forward to eating here everytime I'm on the island. They have the best breakfast in Galveston. Good portions, flavorful, nice atmosphere, quick and friendly service. I highly recommend the shrimp omelet or crab cakes and eggs.

It would be nice if they made waffles on the weekdays. I guess the waffle iron takes a Monday-Friday break? Good food, but we were all in the mood originally for waffles on Monday, so I found that a little lazy.

Food is ok. I had chicken fried chicken and it tasted like fish!! Service was ok. Neat restaurant and atmosphere but really not going back. They have great sauces, jams for sale too!! Think blueberry dressing.

Crab cakes with the poached eggs.....heaven on an English muffin ($.50 extra for the English muffin). Sooooooo awesome that breakfast anywhere else has forever been ruined. Most delicious meal of my life!!!

Pretty good little place. We got there at 9 and beat the crowd. A little pricey, but good food. I ordered the salmon and eggs. The hollandaise sauce was great, and the breakfast potatoes were wonderful. The salmon was dry and didn't have much flavor. The presentation was exquisite. For the price, you think they'd have real maple syrup at every table as opposed to corn syrup flavored stuff.

  • Sal A.

We live two blocks down the street. Went for breakfast on Mother's Day and wow!!!! Where have you been all my life baby!! Crabmeat Benedict to die for. Real crab, housemade Canadian Bacon so good the manager sold me some to take home. My only regret was being seated near the Bakery case which made me feel like I should go to Confession for my gluttonous and sinful yearnings. Cheese Danish?? Do they have Izzy the baker from New York back there. I knew he was in the program back then too, but Galveston? Seriously one of Galveston's best on an island where the word best is used way too often to describe overpriced and ostentatious eateries.

  • Meowella S.

Sure, this place is fine. No complaints. And they bake their own bread, which is very basic, but it's quite good. The reviews of this place really made me think it was super special and extraordinary. It's not. It's good, like a diner but slightly better. One thing that did strike me as odd was the Log Cabin syrup. Really? You can't get a decent real maple syrup down here? It's a great basic breakfast spot. Makes me wonder about the other breakfasts served in Galveston though- yikes.

  • Cindy R.

Excellent brunch and lunch menu. I've been here multiple times for that quick meal that fills for hours. For lunch, I especially recommend getting the half soup half sandwich- great price to try two items on the menu. I personally love the tomato basil soup with a tuna sandwich on croissant. (Also I love the choice of bread) There's an attached bakery with lots and lots of yummy treats, and there's a quirky shop attached to the back (I forget the name though), but it's a great place to pass time if you're waiting to be seated (rare unless it's brunch).

I've eaten here twice and both times were good. Last time we were here for breakfast. They were busy but we were seated right away outside on the patio. I had the Little Breakfast with over easy eggs, potatoes, bacon and wheat toast. My girlfriend had Eggs Benedict. Everything was good except for the fact that the food seem a little cold by the time we got it. I don't really know who to blame for that but the waitstaff seemed attentive and friendly. Overall, we enjoyed our meal and will be back next time we're on the island. I forgot to mention, since it's warmer outside, there were a lot of giant flies zipping around outside. I would eat inside next time.

I really wanted to like this place. Its super cute and big enough to seat plenty. However, the service was just terrible. I don't know that we would visit again. When your on vacation the last thing you want is bad service. Food was ok though.

One of my favorite places for brunch when I'm in Galveston. The food is always fresh and service is good too. Try to avoid coming too early on a Sunday since this place is very popular. I tried the smoked salmon and eggs on this visit! It was delicious. Definitely a great reward for trying to be adventurous.

  • Victoria S.

Food was good, waiter was professional, but, as I looked in the pastry case to order something yummy. I was revolted to see several flies buzzing around and landing on the food! I paid my check, told the waiter I wouldn't be back (and why) , went to the register and told that individual they needed to get rid of the flies, that their closed case was not functioning correctly. This person didn't act even slightly concerned saying, "oh yeah, the trash cans are right outside the door because there's nowhere else to put them." Really? So fix the problem.

June 13, 2015 ate breakfast and servers were polite and food served timely but that's where it went bad. Breakfast sausage wasn't even browned and toast looked like they put in the toaster for 30 second. Eggs & potatoes were good so I gave two stars. Seems like the wait staff would ask why you didn't eat half your meal. I will not eat here again

  • Lacy B.

My husband and I have been here every time we are in Galveston since we discovered it. This visit we took our children ages 1 and 3. They shared a very generous plate of shrimp from the kids menu, I had the cheeseburger which was great as usual. Husband got the BBQ brisket sandwich. He was unimpressed with the lack of meat and abundance of fat, and didn't eat it all. I'm sure if we would've said something it would've been replaced. Wait staff experience has always been a bit off, they seem overwhelmed, which is why we didn't mention the sandwich.

Probably the best pancakes I have ever had! We ate at Sunflower with a very large group and they had a big selection and everyone loved what they had. Stopping in the bakery afterwards for cookies was the perfect ending.

This was such a great find for us as I love breakfast and good food! Our first trip to the Sunflower Bakery & Cafe (note first trip) I had lump crab and eggs and my husband had the crab cakes and eggs. We shared so each could taste the difference and loved them both. We could smell the smoker going and asked the server what was being smoked - it was short ribs. He mentioned the chef was trying out a new recipe and we should come back. We loved this place so the next day we came back for lunch. Yes, my husband had the short ribs. They were incredible, so good he didn't want to share. So good that he insisted to come back for lunch the next day and was so sad to find out that the short ribs had sold out the day prior. He ordered the new special and was still happy with his meal. It's funny since it's been months later and he still talks about the short ribs! So far every trip we make to Galveston we stop in for breakfast, lunch or just to pick up some bakery items. If you come here on a Saturday or Sunday morning, be prepared for the really long wait - but it's worth it!

A great place for lunch if you go off-peak hours. They can get very crowded. They have a chicken salad in halved avocados that is wonderful. Definitely save room for dessert. The cookies were so-so. The lemon bars are great, and the brownies aren't bad either (I had to sample all purely for research of course). Enjoy!

  • Franklin J.

Only reason i'm giving 3 stars is because the lamb chops was good. Everything else ok only. We were seated within 10 mins (got there at 11am) but service was slow. Took a while to get our drink orders in, then our food orders. Took a while for the food to come out, and she forgot our silverware. we had to go ask for it. Lamb chops good, eggs and potatoes ok. pancakes were subpar. Sausage bad. French fries overly salty. Prices are high for what you get. But overall ok, doubtful i'll return.

Everything I tried from my groups food was excellent. I had redfish with butter sauce, kids food was great, crab cake great, bread, and desserts are awesome. Good Service also.

Don't be fooled by the name, this restaurant can whip out some amazing dishes. I went here with my girlfriend after we scavengered galveston island all day. We came in and the friendly staff introduced us to the history of the place and shoed us the menu of the day. My gf had a special lamb dish and i had their alfredo pasta and it was delicous. On top of everything their dessert at the bakery is top notch.

I am so glad my brother, who used to work at TAMU-G, recommended this place. My almost-husband Eric R. and I took a day trip to Galveston. After walking along the beach, our hunger grew so we headed toward 14th street. We sat on the patio, and I loved how the bread basket included challah with sesame seeds - mmmm! I ate a lot of it, so soft and tasty. Eric R. knows how picky I am, but I decided to let him pick 2 dishes for us to split. We got one of the weekend specials - shrimp and ricotta-spinach gnocchi but in marinara rather than parmesan sauce, and seafood salad (we got grilled salmon) with avocado, julienne veggies, crispy onions, and fried goat cheese balls. They were both scrumptious. Topped off with passionfruit iced tea for me and dos equis lager for him, it was a delicious patio meal. We were too full for dessert but I would definitely head back here even just for the challah!

Found this place on Yelp, thought we'd try it out. Arrived around 8:30 am on a rainy, cold Monday morning. No wait, not busy. Waiter very nice, attentive and fast. I had the crab cakes benedict and my wife had the little breakfast. Mine was absolutely great. Eggs poached perfectly and sitting on two delicious crab cakes. Hollandaise sauce was to die for. Wife's little breakfast while good, was unremarkable. Just eggs bacon potatoes and toast. Nothing to rave about. The bakery inside has some wonderful looking stuff and we got a couple danish to take with us. I would agree with the majority reviews on Yelp about this place and recommend it highly. I hope to try it for lunch next time on the Island.

The best country breakfast you will come across in Galveston Texas. I order the big breakfast and its more than enough. They give you tons of bacon and the fresh OJ is not the bullshit minute maid garbage.

The food was awesome... had crab cakes Benedict for breakfast, YUMMY! The review is getting 3 stars because the waiter was not very nice to my husband. His order came out wrong the waiter looked at him as if it was his fault. I was almost done with my meal by the time the order was corrected.

I've eaten here twice and I'm glad to see I' m not the only Yelper that thinks Sunflower is overrated. All the food I've had, besides the fresh squeezed mimosa, is very one-note and I think their menu needs more creative brunch items. What would make this place A-OK, is if the service made up for the so-so food. WRONG. During our most recent visit, we had a phantom waiter that we saw a total of 2 times the entire two hours that we were there. No timely refills, no syrup or ketchup for items such as pancakes and potatoes, and when he did check on us it was so quick we felt we were always hurrying to finish our request as he was shuffling away from the table. I will say that the bakery items, namely the muffins, have always been delicious. But muffins do not make a complete breakfast in my book. I doubt this is the best place to get a decent breakfast/brunch in Galveston and I intend to explore other options next time I'm on the island.

Oh, Sunflower Bakery & Cafe! I could write sonnets about my adoration of your brunch - it was a scrumptious start to a fabulous day. Up early on a Saturday, the always-up-for-an-adventure Kranz sisters and I decided to hightail it outta suburbia and head south to Galveston for some brunch & beach. And what did we do during an hour drive? Scope out brunch spots on Yelp, clearly. We settled on Sunflower Bakery - who can resist challah (holla!) french toast? We arrive to a quaint converted house in a quasi-residential neighborhood, famished and thrilled to be near the ocean. After a short 5 minute wait (this place was B-U-S-Y), we settled into a corner table and perused the brunch menu specials - it wasn't long before we all found our favorites. Challah French Toast, Soft Shell Crab Eggs Benedict & Belgian Waffles, please! Oh, and a mimosa - I have a *bit* of a headache from last night... My mimosa arrives - hallelujah! - and what is this? A cognac glass filled to the brim? Surely it must be all OJ, no bubbles... Sip... Oh, dear. This is glorious. An extra large mimosa to start my brunch? I'm now in love. The belgian waffle arrives, complete with strawberry butter, maple syrup and my sunny-side-up eggs cooked to perfection. The menu pre-determines bacon, but my sweet-as-pie waitress is happy to accomodate my preference for sausage, and even modified my entree comes out perfectly. My belgian waffle is crispy, with a hint of vanilla, and waffle-d to crispy perfection. I glance over, hoping to sneak a bite of the soft shell eggs bene - whoa! How on earth did she inhale that whole plate in minutes? Guess I'll have to be faster next time. The report from the Kranz sisters: YUMMY. And we're not sharing. So get your fork outta here. The check arrives - I reliquish the last few bites of my belgian waffle. I'm defeated, and must put.the.fork.down. Otherwise, we'll never make it to East Beach to Occupy Galveston for a few hours. Thank you, Sunflower Bakery, for a delicious beginning to a carefree weekend.

Took the family of 5 on Sunday, there was a little wait, the line grew to the door once we were seated. They served Great Migas and Southern style eggs. The Pancakes and Waffles were wonderful. The hot chocolate was huge with Marshmallows... Made my 10 year old smile. The coffee was always poured... Enjoy. If the weather was warmer we would have sat outside.

This is a real treasure, especially for breakfast. They have a full bakery on site with fresh breads as well as pastries. A special place for people who want the local flavor and not the mass produced items at Kroger or Randall's.

We were in Galveston on a trip and I had a craving for bakery-type food for breakfast. So I researched breakfast restaurants in the area (that were not tacos or fast food) and I came across this place. It had good reviews and the pictures looked just like what I was craving - yummy goodness. On a tip from a previous reviewer, we showed up early (great tip, by the way) to beat the weekend crowd. It is a casual place and if the weather is nice, they have an outdoor eating area. We ordered a cinnamon roll and the Belgian waffle - I know these are simple things that are easy to make, but it was what we were craving at the time. Needless to say, they did not disappoint. I wouldn't say it's the best cinnamon roll I've ever had, but it was pretty darn good. I tend to like mine more soft and gooey, but these were a little more firm on the outside and soft on the inside. The waffle was was the winner of the two options, and they use a whipped flavored butter that is very tasty. Looking around at some of the other breakfast platters, I don't think that those customers were disappointed either. I highly recommend this place for breakfast - I cannot comment on any of the lunch items.

Greatest eggs benedict I've ever had in any restaurant ever. SO DELICIOUS. They must make the hollandaise differently as it was creamier and had more flavor than anything I've found before. Good coffee as well! Waiter was attentive but unobtrusive - very pleased there. If you haven't yet, go for breakfast!

What a beautiful spot! I loved everything about it. The bakery is breathtaking! I purchased 2 double danish(cherry/cream cheese) and a carrot and blueberry muffin all which my party of 8 shared as a breakfast appetizer! Above and beyond fantastic service, very accommodating (I asked for BIG breakfast for kids to share and they split that for me in the kitchen) and most importantly the FOOD was stellar! My 8 and 10 year olds actually said they were full! That never happens with my little bottomless pits! I had an omelette (choose 3, I chose bacon, spinach, mushroom) that was superbly fresh and crispy/soft hashbrown new potatoes. And what a bargain, 4 hungry adults, 2 bottomless pit children, 2 toddlers ALL ate and left more than satisfied for $56 with gratuity added in!!! This is a MUST in Galveston!

I've been here are few times now, chocolate chip walnut cookies are amazing and so were the sand tarts but I wasn't impressed with the Italian Cream Cake and the coffee cake was dry and too much cinnamon. The breakfast croissants with bacon are meh (bacon was burnt and eggs over cooked). The cream cheese Danish was pretty good but again too much cinnamon and a bit dry. I bought some of their basil pesto (fresh made) to-go so I'll update my review when I try it. I wish the prices were a bit lower.

Sunflower Bakery is an upbeat, friendly and popular cafe style venue with a menu ranging from soups and salads, to their ever popular sandwiches and or fresh fish selections. The portions are good size for the price and the ingredients are always fresh and very colorful, which being a health conscientious eater, I care very much about. My favorite picks are : ~ Breakfast Cinnamon Rolls are outta sight Pecan Currant scones are wonderful ~ Lunch The Reuben Egg Salad Sandwich Tomato Basil Soup Seafood Salad with grilled salmon ~ Dinner Pistachio Crusted Snapper Crab Cakes Chicken Fried Steak This place as one of the other yelpers described, can be a nightmare during peak lunch and brunch hours. The service not to mention the food suffer as a result, so I strongly agree that diners visit just slightly off the normal dining hours. You won't be disappointed.

The sun came out and all I got was a superb sandwich the salmon grilled sandwich cooked to perfection with a side of coleslaw and a side of fries what more do you need. Great ambience and plenty of breads to take home for afternoon snacking. Where is the wi-fi?

My daughter and I had breakfast here and we had the small bacon, egg breakfast. It had very tasty bacon and plenty of it. We took a chocolate cheesecake brownie and a chocolate tart with us and they were delicious . My husband and I stopped by for dessert today and he had the cinnamon roll that was warm and delicious. I decided on the chocolate tart again as it was sooooo good. I am going to buy a loaf of their cheese/jalapeño bread to take home with me. We had excellent service and we will go back. Good food.

Very good food, super yummy food and soft focaccia bread made in house. Chicken and sausage gumbo were excellent, warmed me up on this cool day. I got the Cuban sandwich, i think it would have been better on the crusty french bread the hubby's roast beef po boy came on (very tasty btw), rather than the sourdough, but it was still very good. Our server Zach was very attentive. He was a sweet guy and really took excellent care of us.Awesome way to spend my birthday!

Holy Yumminess! I am not sure why I have not written a review before (I have been eating here with my family often, for at least 2 years now), and i am obsessed with the challah french toast (best in the galveson/houston area), and the tomato soup is out of this world, especially when its accompanied by the jalapeno cheese bread! I really enjoy the casual feel of this place, even though the food is not "casual"...it's a great place to have in Galveston, and I always look forward to coming here when I go down to my family's bay house for the weekend. Oh and the cheesecake and challah are AMAZING!!! I can never leave with out buying a cheesecake square and challah to go...I guess I need to work on my will power, but it's just so darn good!

This place is soooo good! We went for brunch/lunch before Dickens on the Strand and everyone was full and happy afterwards. Half had breakfast, the other half lunch and everyone was pleased with what they got. Service was a little goofy but cute and happy decor. We got several baked goods to go and all were good except the iced sugar cookie. Can no one do these like Kitchen Door in Austin? Bummer.

Actually I found this place by chance, after spending a weekend at Dickens On The Strand. I had the crab cake salad for lunch & loved it. The 3 crab cakes were delicious with a generous salad portion beneath them tossed in a wonderful flavored dressing. Included were rosemary bread & cranberry nut bread. Delicious, only thing I didn't like was the bread was served cold. Took home raisin oatmeal & gingerbread cookies, fresh & very tasty!! All pastries look wonderful and you can buy the piece or purchase whole cake or pie. Atmosphere was very pleasant, ate indoors but later realized outdoor seating was available. Hostess didn't mention. Definitely will be back.

Worst experience EVER! Waited for 30 minutes to be seated. No problem. Waited 30 minutes or more for our food, which arrived cold. My partner sent her food back.waitress came back within 5 minutes and said she had kitchen fix a new plate, but it was the same food. She had likely microwaved it. Had to ask twice for the Manager. When he came, he was rude from the get go. He brought a fresh plate. However when we questioned the fact that the waitress had said a new plate had already been made, he accused us of attacking her and said that he didn't know what had happened previously. When my partner stated that she didn't want anything else to eat, the Manager removed MY food from in front of me and told us to leave. Totally unacceptable behavior for a Manager OR a business owner. I don't know who this clown was, but he does not deserve the business from paying customers. I hope you will decide to go somewhere else.

5 of us had breakfast there this morning. It was decent food. Nothing to really write home about. The pancakes were huge and fluffy. The challa French toast was moist in a good way. The crab cake eggs Benedict was cooked great and very tasty. The chicken and waffles was only OK--just some chicken strips on a plain ole waffle=meh. But what makes me give this one star is when I bought some items from the bakery. The lady cutting bread behind the cash register dropped a bread knife on the FLOOR. She picked it up and PUT IT BACK ON THE BREAD CUTTING TABLE. I watched what she was doing while I waited for my friends to check out. She took the bread elsewhere and left the knife on the table for the next employee to use. GROSSES ME OUT that she put it back on the table in the first place and then JUST LEFT IT THERE. What is more worrisome is that I wasn't feeling well right after I finished my breakfast. Hopefully it's nothing....but the health and cleanliness practices of this restaurant are worrisome.

Sticky bun delicious and large enough to share. Bacon-cheese biscuit wonderful. 2 complaints. Coffee below average, when compared to coffee house standards. Dogs no longer welcome on patio which eliminates neighbors from stopping by on their morning walks. Pity.

Great place to eat for good food and great service...the bakery looks amazing but has no gluten free offerings....kid friendly...We had breakfast, with big as your face pancakes...coffee was not strong but then again I don't like strong coffee... It's got a cute antique gift shop next door and was easy to find... We will diffenitely eat there again

Biskets and gravy were cold. Crab cake and eggs benidict needed a muffin dad said. Service was fast and good 4 for service. But 2-3 for food. Average to 3. For in store service. I'm not to eager to return to be honest. It was crowded and noisy. I bought a cookie (or 3) for later. And they were extremely dry. Like needed a whole glass of milk in between each bite of cookie. This looses a whole star for me. Sorry Sunflower.

Everything here was a failure. Poor service Bad food Another reviewer commented on the flies and I agree.. they were buzzing around the filthy, dirty, dusty windows the entire time I was trying to eat the bad food that took forever to come to the table. I had to ask for EVERYTHING I needed. Silverware, sweet & low, creamer, syrup and butter for my pancakes... and YES..... every server walked right past my table and ignored my efforts to politely ask for service. They TRIED TO AVOID helping customers.. The waiter came to my table more times after he brought the check than he did during my entire meal. I guess he needed to go somewhere and was waiting on me to pay the bill. Too bad he couldn't stop by earlier for a coffee refill or to bring some syrup or a glass of water... or..... a fly swatter.

Yelp mobile saved the day when we were looking for breakfast this Monday morning in Galveston. This is a great place for breakfast (lunch, too I am guessing). There is plenty of seating in 2 separate rooms, and the service was just fine. I ordered the quiche that came with a fruit cup. The best damn fruit cup I ever ate! It had the standard melon and strawberries, but also included blackberries and grapefruit! Oh so pretty and delicious! The quiche was amazing, too. The coffee was so good, I wanted another cup, but the guy never got back around to us before we were ready to leave. Definitely a place to stop when in Galveston!

Excellent crab eggs benedict! Dont even know the last time I ate that much at breakfast (and had a 5 hour drive after...awesome). The service was good, just took a long to time to get our food - probably b/c it was so slammed. But let's be real, slammed is always a good thing when it comes to food quality so worth the wait. Great place, a must when in Galveston.

I'm a sucker for almost anything with a cream filling. They make good chow here. Not as good as the old G&G bakery, over on Avenue L which is long gone, that I remember as a kid, but still good chow.....

Good breakfast--A lot of locals seem to agree. Our table tried the "Migas", pancakes, and the "big breakfast." All were very good, especially the pancakes. Large portions, so be hungry or share a plate.

Stopped after lunch one day during Spring Break to pick up sweets for everyone. Cheese cake, lemon bundt, cinnamon crumb cake and a chocolate raspberry cake. Everything was most and tasty but with the exception of the CRC, nothing really stood out. I loved the atmosphere and was looking forward to coming back for breakfast. The morning (Saturday) that we checked out of our rental we came down for brunch about 10:30. We sat outside in their spacious patio and ordered breakfast. 3 out of 4 of us ordered the big breakfast which included three eggs cooked to order, grilled red potatoes, bacan, ham or sausage and two buttermilk pancakes. At $7.50, this meal gave you a run for your money. Oh, I forgot to mention, we started with fresh squeezed OJ (generous but at $3.75, there must have been gold flakes in it) and a huge cinnamon roll and peach filled pastry. Great choices all around. The food was tasty, the service good and the atmosphere perfect for a relaxing brunch, lunch or snack.

The Sunflower Cafe was definitely a favorite of mine when I lived in Galveston. They have great food, a neat patio to take advantage of when the weather is cool, and a very relaxed atmosphere. Breakfast and brunch here is one of the best, if not THE best on the island. My favorite breakfast item is (are) the pancakes. The first time I tried them, I noticed that they tasted different, yet familiar. After a couple of minutes of concentration, I realized they tasted a bit like corn bread. Yes, corn bread! This is only my guess...and a brilliant one at that. Seriously, no one else could figure it out! Now I know that it might sound unappetizing to some of you, but it's actually very tasty. A different take on the boring ol' pancake. They also have a great brunch menu. Take the time to look over all their options, and don't hesitate to ask for substitutions. They will gladly do that for you. The service was a bit slow most times, but that wouldn't stop me from eating here again on a future visit.

I tried this place for the first time on Sunday for brunch. I had the bread pudding French toast and it was delicious. A bit too rich for me, but that's what I get for basically ordering a dessert for breakfast. I exchanged one piece of toast for one of my dad's blueberry pancakes and it was even better. The blueberries were big and juicy. Service was excellent.

Recommended by friends when we drove to Galveston for the day. It was about noon on a Saturday...was offered 3 menus, Breakfast, Lunch and a Brunch Menu. There were three of us and coincidentally we each ordered from separate menus. We all were very pleased...I ordered the Quail and Eggs on the Brunch Menu...it was delectable. The hollinday sauce was awesome. Our waitress said she'd only been there about 3 weeks....wow, very attentive...my tea remained full and she checked with us often. We'll be back!

My family and I LOVE this place....we go for breakfast (weekends until 3:00 pm!) every time we come to Galveston. This place is so cute and charming. Has an in-house bakery and even has a small antique shop inside. Be prepared to wait a while on weekends in the high season, but I promise, the food is worth the wait. A must-have...try the eggs benedict. DELICIOUS! My Dad has gotten the smoked chicken hash a couple of times, and he says it's amazing. Waffles are great, migas are great...everything we've had is fresh, hot and quick....service has always been great here...not sure if some of the other reviewers even came to the same place...Honestly a perfect place to go for a amazing meal. Enjoy!

Thanks to fellow Yelpers, I suggested my family and I meet here for breakfast on Sunday and we really enjoyed a wonderful morning meal together. When we arrived at 9:30 AM I was sure there would be a wait for a table for six, but we were promptly seated. I thought that might be a sign that this place wasn't as great as others previously said. This cafe is wonderful! The service might be a tad slow, and the coffee wasn't that great, but the food was SO GOOD. I had two Texas gulf crab cakes topped with poached eggs & hollandaise sauce served with breakfast potatoes. It was over $10, maybe $12 or $13 but it was absolutely delish and enough for me to share. Luckily, my husband ordered the other dish I was eyeing...the Challah French Toast. It's homemade challah bread dipped in egg batter and served with butter and maple syrup. It was generously portioned as well so my husband and I ate half of our breakfast and then swapped plates. It was a perfect breakfast. Like another reviewer posted, I wish the french toast had come with better syrup. Everyone else at our table enjoyed their breakfast as well. Their pastry displays at the counter looked beautiful with a variety of sweets like pies, cookies and homemade breads. They also had a nice upscale selection of items to puchase including the line of Barefoot Contessa food items and homemade salad dressings. I would reccomend this place for breakfast, located on the corner of 14th and Post Office road. There isn't much parking, but like most places in Galveston I found that we were always looking for street parking.

I was very satisfied with the food and service. Breakfast was awesome. I had the belgian waffles with eggs over medium. My wife had the ham and spinach omlette. She liked it as well. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a place that serves one hell of a breakfast.

Best breakfast place we found while on vacation. Big portions of delicious food. I got the 'little breakfast' and it was HUGE, my boyfriend got the breakfast sandwhich and loved it. The best part was the chocolate dipped pecan pie. We ended up goin back the next day for some to bring back to family to try.

I've been a fan of The Sunflower since they opened. I visited fairly regularly when they were on Church and 16th, and even had a couple of (superb) lunches at the short-lived restaurant location on 45th, in the space Konsumer's had occupied for years. The current incarnation seems to be a blend of the two other locations: Lisa Blair's baking skills, combined with husband Harry's culinary expertise. The interior is an airy, sunny yellow; the establisment is clean; and the food is good. I agree with reviewers who suggest that the service is sometimes iffy. It was much more predictable when the business was smaller and more of a "family" venture. I could count on seeing either or both of the adult Blairs behind the counter - and often their children (a couple of whom were former students of mine), as well. No matter, though: Sunflower has won a place in my heart: it's one of a very few establishments I visit whenever I'm back in Galveston.

Sunflower is a cute bakery in the heart of the Historical District in Galveston. Their menu is great and they also have a daily menu that has fresh seafood. When I bring my friends to Galveston to stay with my parents, they always request to go to Sunflower for their brunch. We can always count on them to have quality food. The service can be a hit or miss and the hostess may be retarded. Either way, it is still a Galveston staple.

Dessert (specifically the key lime tart): 7 stars Food: 3 or 4 stars, depending in how sandwiched-out I am from all the great places in Galveston to grab a sandwich. Great place to grab brunch on the patio, and of course dessert. I miss the old location that had 2.5 tables and a menu written on white butcher paper, but the newer space is great! Don't forget to stop and buy some baked goods on your way out of town (but don't buy up all the key lime tart, just in case I'm in town!).

We enjoy going here and meeting with the family for breakfasts on sailing days. It's a nice walk from where we live on the other side of down town and you have the choice of indoor or outdoor seating. Good portions and good food, reasonable prices. Very enjoyable. We always reccomend for breakfast for the out of towners who "want to eat where the locals eat".

Ate there yesterday. The strawberry lemonade was nothing to write home about. I had the shrimp omelet which was good. My wife had the French Toast that was really good, and my daughter had the burger which she didn't eat (she only three so whats she likes changes by the day). Our waiter was really nice.

Via a search on Yelp we found this place. Another great place for Breakfast. The smoked Chicken Hash was awesome and so was the Challa French Toast. We would come back here again. Staff was warm friendly and attentive. Picked up some fresh bread from the bakery side to bring home to San Antonio.

Great service, waiter was on top of his game. Definitely go for breakfast. The pancakes are these bomb- soft fluffy goodness. I'm not a pancake man but this place changed that for made. The crabcake benedict was pretty good. I felt like the crabcake could have used a bit more flavor and the eggs needed to be slightly more runny (but that's me nitpicking). The one thing I did not enjoy about this place was the coffee. It tasted really watered down to me. You can't make banging breakfast and slack on the coffee. Also those birds screaming on the patio are a little scary. Seriously, watch out for those birds.

Food was amazing drinks were strong which is what we asked for the foreign waiter was very attentive and helpful. My only complaint is the rude host I believe her name was Julie. I asked for a different table to add more guests and be away from the kitchen. She rolled her eyes and acted like she didn't hear me, I repeated myself and she said I would have to be back on the waiting list. After standing there for a while I realized she did not put me back on the list I had to ask to be put back on once again. Over all food was great but the host was enough to make my blood boil.

This place gets abso-freaking-lutely packed during brunch hours. Get here early or prepare to wait. I don't mean just wait on getting a table, no I mean waiting on your food as well. My friend and I decided grab a quick meal here and our wait time was about 15 minutes for a table for two. I loved how lively and bubbly this place was. There is a huge glass display filled with pies, cakes, and other baked goods. It seemed like almost everything was homemade and fresh. They also sell products like jams, dressing, and baking mixes in the back. The hostess and the servers were pretty friendly. We ordered the Challah french toast, crab cake salad, tomato soup, shrimp po'boy, and mimosas (of course!). The mimosa arrived in time and it was super refreshing...exactly what you need on a hot day. The rest of the food took about 30 minutes even though the server kept reassuring us that the food will be out soon...While we waited, I noticed a really old contraption that was in the corner. Apparently it was an old-school bread slicer and they use it quite a bit. How cool! Well, I know it was a long wait but the food was pretty incredible. The Challah french toast was sooo good. Although it didnt look as appetizing I would haven imagined, the taste was not compromised. The bread was so moist and buttery with the perfect amount of sweetness. I would definitely go back just for the french toast. The other dishes were pretty good as well. The shrimp po'boy was not exactly what I expected, but it was okay for me. My friend seemed to have enjoyed her crab cake salad and soup. A fair warning: the portion sizes are pretty big with most of the dishes so be careful of how much you order. We ended up ordering way too much and took half the food home. Overall, I liked Sunflower bakery and wouldn't mind coming back here again.

I love this place! I've eaten both breakfast food and lunch food, and everything has always been delicious. There is usually a pretty significant wait on weekends, no matter what time you arrive, so be prepared. There is a nice gift shop to look around in while you wait, though.

There's something for everyone at Sunflower Bakery & Cafe. Early risers, lunch bunchers, healthy food snobs, folks with sweet tooths ... this place has it all. I chose to start my brunch off light with a stuffed avocado tuna salad, a side of greens and fruit, while the beau opted for fried fish tacos - on massive homemade flour tortillas I should add. (The tacos were far better than what he had at Black Pearl Oyster Bar the night before.) Choosing a dessert was difficult, as there's everything from bread pudding, cinnamon rolls, lemon bars, pies, cakes, cookies, scones ... but we opted for the chocolate croissant. It was huge, filled with lots of chocolate, but it definitely disappointed as it was thick, dry and stale rather than soft, flakey and chewy. Service is friendly, true to Galveston fashion. I'll come back without a doubt, especially to try their belgian style waffles. Oh, and there's an antique shop inside/connected.

This is the most adorable cafe with AH-MAY-ZING FOOD!! Everything I've gotten here has been delicious. They have lunch specials from time to time and it's sensational. Their sandwiches are awesome as well. But my favorite has got to be brunch! Their eggs benedict with crab cakes and hollandaise sauce is TO DIE FOR!!! If you every visit Galveston, you have to come her!

Phenomenal! If you want to experience true Galveston breakfast, head over to the Sunflower Bakery & Cafe and get ready for a wonderful experience! Lots of locals mixed with visitors indulging in fantastic food and fun. Crab cakes and Eggs (think of Eggs Benedict on steroids) were out of this world! Perfectly poached eggs and fantastic fresh crab cakes with a fabulous Hollandaise sauce is beyond delicious. My husband had an omelette with a yummy croissant that he said rivaled the ones he ate years ago in Paris. Must stop if you're ever in Galveston!

This place came recommended, but I would say to save your money and just leave Galveston and head back across the bridge. Sorry, just doesn't really seem to have recovered from any of the hurricane damage from years ago.

Duh-licious late breakfast today. They nailed the Cremona mushroom omelet and I had to have bacon on the side. Their house salad ain't your everyday house and is chock full of flavor. It's big; so, consider the half-order option.

I am absolutely infatuated with everything about The Sunflower. Not only does it have cute, open sitting areas with adorable wooden tables, but it has a gift shop and a bakery area too. I visited here for breakfast and had their delicious three egg omelette (it was extremely hard to choose- so many great options). Everything is presented so beautifully and you can tell they do not skimp on even the smallest detail. Before leaving I walked by the bakery and the woman there showed me a King Cake and told me all about it, knowing I wasn't from the area and didn't know much about it. The people were all so friendly and it will be a regular stop every time I come to Galveston!

I love to get pastries from here! I also love the seasonal pies they have. I come here at least once a month. I love the cream puff but sometimes they put alot of powder sugar, I just dust it off. The burgers are amazing! I have had the spaghetti with steak and my friend loved it but I thought it has a light pungent taste. Just my opinion my other friends loved it. I always love looking at what the bakery has to offer after my lunch.

My husband and I love looking for off the "mainstream path" restaurants when we go out of town. I found this place on Yelp and was extremely pleased. This was a great breakfast! I had the migas and he had the big breakfast. There was so much food that we couldn't finish it. The prices were good and the service was great. It was a very clean establishment. I'd definitely go back.

An ok menu for vegetarians. I immediately went with an egg salad sandwich, and asked for their self proclaimed famous tomato bisque. Luckily, when asked, the waiter knew there was chicken stock in the soup. It is refreshing to receive and immediate honest answer about meat products in food. It was more than I could expect in this tourist town. The restaurant was a bit noisy but tolerable. All the staff were friendly and accommodating. Most importantly, it was clean. I will go back for dinner and possibly a breakfast. I'm looking forward to a baked good as well.

I walked in, unknowingly, fifteen minutes before they were scheduled to close, and the counter staff and manager were very friendly and very helpful, never watching the clock. They have lovely, fresh baked goods including cookies, pies, breads, quiche. I have a soy sensitivity, and the manager called the baker to make certain that there was no soy in the bread (although they cautioned that there could be cross-contamination of soy oil from the frying oil combination used in the kitchen). This is a wonderful find for me, as many commercially-made breads have soy in them. Thank you, Sunflower Bakery!

Atmosphere was great. Breakfast was good, but average. Plentiful, though. Service was polite but a bit inept. Maybe he was just having an off day. Now dessert was another story. It was fan-freakin-tastic! We scoped out the desserts at breakfast and went back after dinner. Had the coconut meringue pie, chocolate dipped pecan pie and lemon bar. Only problem now is that we feel SICK from eating too much. Haha! The evening service was much, much better. Another good, reliable choice for our frequent Galveston visits!

Wow!!! I have been trying to duplicate my meal since I ate here. I am gluten/ dairy free so I definitely didn't expect to find something I could eat. There were alot if baked goods everywhere that looked delicious I had my oatmeal packet in my pocket and planned on ordering a fruit bowl. Instead my waiter showed me what I could have and suggested the egg, salmon, frittata. It was so good. My mouth still waters thinking about it, he also made sure no butter touched my egg:).

WOW this place never disappoints. I hate giving a good rating because everyone is going to find this place. The only reason I don't give five stars is that sometimes the service is lackluster, but the food makes up for any inconsistencies in the service. The baked goods are to die far. They take a lot of pride in their food and it shows in every bite.

First off, a big thank you to the girl at the front desk of the Hilton for suggesting this place. I asked where can I have breakfast that isnt a chain restaurant and she suggested The Sunflower Bakery. After reviewing the menu and looking around the bakery, we didn't even know where to start. Everything looked AMAZING. I finally decided on the crab cakes with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce. Incredibly rich and decadent. We also purchased several pastries to go and even some chipotle ketchup. Every thing was great. Get off the beaten path and eat here!

How did I miss this on all my trips to Galveston? What a great place for a brunch - varied menu from eggs and bacon to Belgian waffles to southwest specialties. The surprise is the extensive bakery! Cookies, cake, bread and pies! Keep Sunflower in mind for evening dessert as well. We will definitely be back!

This place is alright in my book. It's pretty pricey and not always spot on. Definitely better choice than Dennys or an ihop. Your looking at a 12 dollar breakfast though. I like the waffles, and the smoked chicken hash is great on the weekends. Worth a visit for sure.

Located within walking distance to UTMB's campus, this cafe is a great place to catch breakfast or lunch. As I walked in, I was greeted by a staff member and he told me to pick a seat anywhere. For a Tuesday morning, it was fairly busy. Lots of folks were coming, going and enjoying good company. I settled on the Challah French Toast. It came with a side of butter and strawberry. It was delicious. The bread was heavenly. It had perfect "grill" marks and a nice crunch to them. A plate came with three toast, which was more than enough for me. Mmhhmmmm....challlah french toasttt.

I came here to write a review after visiting the bakery today. This was my first visit here, I just visited the bakery for take out. I am a bit surprised to see all of the good reviews but I can only hope the food is better than the bakery items. I purchased 3 bakery items, a coconut cream tart, a ginger snap cookie and a croissant. The coconut cream tart didn't taste fresh, had very little flavor and terrible texture, the cookie was dry and didn't have the taste or texture of a freshly baked cookie, the croissant was overcooked and dry. I personally think if you call yourself a bakery, your specialty should be baked goods...and they should be exceptional. In this case I was completely underwhelmed and overcharged. I MAY at some point give the restaurant a chance...but wouldn't ever spend my hard-earned money on the baked goods. Disappointed.

Great breakfast! High quality and reasonably priced. Food made with care. The breakfast potatoes are not the usual diced fried potatoes. They are skilled prepared with lots of crispy parts. Just excellent. Would normally give 4 stars but considering the available breakfast options in Galveston, I think you can't go wrong here or mosquito cafe. Of course they also have the bakery case which is a legit 5 star affair in my opinion.

Freakin' awesome. Yelp redeemed itself for the disaster at Los Compos.. Sunflower Bakery was exactly what we needed to part ways and say our goodbyes to Galveston Island. After a wonderful week of fried fish and scrimp, above average hamburgers, and tons of bread-pudding we came here for breakfast and demolished the crab cake and eggs. For $13, you get two crab cakes with a poached egg on ecah, then covered with a hollandaise sauce I wanted to swim in. As Grandma and Grandpa Jones sitting behind us said- "we've been coming here for awhile and never had a bad breakfast".

I thought the baked goods were yummy! My only criticism is that I thought they charged over-the-top for some of the items. For example, a 2" x 2" cut out sugar cookie, minimally decorated, was a $1.50! In my opinion, $.75 would've been more reasonable.

This is our Galveston brunch staple! Always an enjoyable experience with delicious food and friendly wait staff. The pancakes are amazing and seriously the fluffiest I've ever had. I also enjoy browsing the shop in the back and gazing at the variety of desserts in the glass cases at the front!

This place is amazing! I try something different every time I go & its always delicious. Their food is fresh & its a one of a kind spot. Their bakery items are also yummy. We love this place & recommend it to anyone visiting Galveston!

We got in before the crowd did (looked like a solid wait by 930). I had the small breakfast and it was more than enough, it's hard to mess up eggs, potatoes and sausage but some places do... Thankfully this isn't one of them. Perfect over easy eggs, a right sized portion of home fries and juicy sausage. My fiancée had a double side of fruit that hit the spot. Baked goods looked popular but we didn't indulge no matter how good they looked. All in all a solid breakfast.

Had dinner there on Saturday evening. We had the pecan crusted, smoked prime rib and pork loin specials. Both were amazing. The flavors were incredible. Couldn't resist dessert either- piece of yellow cake with whipped buttercream. Had to get a loaf of the table side bread to take home from the bakery. Service was excellent, forgot to get our servers name (male w goatee). Unfortunately the gift shop adjacent to the restaurant closed at 7pm, a hour before the restaurant. So will have to check it out before dinner next time. Would drive from Houston just to eat here. Will be back.

My grandma loves Sunflower Bakery and Cafe so we always find ourselves back. Since last year their service has improved greatly. Peeking around the restaurant hey have done a lot to improve service with checklists, and reminders for the team members. That being said the service is not incredible but the food is soooo good. Will definitely be back with our without my grandma when I'm back in town!

A nice respite on a glorious sunny spring day. Great patio. The bakery looked amazing. I can only comment on the atmosphere, the strawberry lemonade which was out of this world, and the waitstaff. Everything was top notch.

Wonderful service. Awesome food! When my pastry chef husband declares the bread and pastries as "fantastic" it's a big deal!!! Atmosphere is very pleasant. Lots of room to dine inside or out. Don't miss this place.

We found the Sunflower Bakery & Cafe for breakfast before setting out on a cruise and we were delighted. They have the best cinnamon rolls, light, fluffy, but still moist; one is a meal. Everything came out of the kitchen together (party of 6) and cooked to perfection. Caution, the tip was included on our check, but no one alerted us to it. We all almost tipped twice. We knew it was going to be good because it was pretty crowded and we had about a 15 minute wait. Enjoy.

5 STARS!!! service was great. Shrimp ranchero omelette with red potatoes was literally incredible!!! I asked for salsa on the side and it was to die for!!! Not sure if the salsa was home made but it sure tasted like it. Steak and eggs were amazing and reasonably priced! Steak was cooked beautifully! Fluffy pancakes were better than IHOP and poached eggs were remarkable. Best meal in Galveston so far.

The Sunflower Bakery wowed us even though we actually weren't planning on dining there. We cruised from the hotel towards another Yelp hot spot only to find that our destination had decided to close after tourist season. I'm a tourist dammit and here I am to dine for breakfast! Oh well, thats where Sunflower comes in. The building and the space which is half antique store half bakery is charming. The interior is wonderful as was the stroll past the stocked chef's case on the way outside to the patio. With the wonderful gulf breeze blowing we chose the shrimp omlette and the southern style eggs. The wife's dish paired corn cakes, ranchero, cheddar, and sour cream. My omlette using the same sauce with shrimp, cheddar, and guacamole. Both selections with the breakfast potatoes and toast were well prepared; ok coffee. Anybody else prefer the grinding salt and pepper shakers? I love spinning out about a quarter of the pepper shaker on my entree. Not a major complaint could be found on the food, service was attentive. So we didn't exactly plan to come here; but we're glad we did. I'm sure Sunflower appreciates all the after tourist season tourist business it can get. Thanks for being open!

I had heard and read good things about this restaurant and was not dissapointed. We came on a very busy Sunday and sat outside. The service was quick and friendly. The menu was not too extensive. I got the eggs Benedict which was good and Casey got the eggs and salmon which was even better. The bakery case looked like it had some delectable treats but we were both too full to try anything. This has been our favorite place for breakfast on the island so far. The prices were decent and a restaurant that is not just an extension of what comes off a Sysco truck is always nice.

Sunday brunch: The shrimp omelette was fantastic. Best potatoes I've had in a long time. Great service-- our waiter made good recommendations and kept the coffee filled. My friend's carne guisada tasted wonderful. Bacon and Belgian waffles with strawberry butter, oh my! The crabmeat omelette was sublime. Then we stopped in the bakery to take goodies home. This will be a destination every time we visit Galveston.

They had a nice breakfast. But being in the south I was REALLY looking forward to biscuits & gravy and grits! But they do not offer either one!!! So I ordered the Challah French Toast and it was delicious! My mom had the blueberry pancakes and my cousins had the buttermilk pancakes. They raved about them. My father had a ham & cheese omelette. He said it was very good. I just wish they would have had biscuits & gravy and grits!!!

I called for a reservation for ten. I was told okay. We arrived and were then told the kitchen was closing so no orders. This despite having 40 other people in restaurant and orders being taken. Manager was rude. We'll never be back.

Breakfast today with work colleagues. One colleague said "the best (only) shrimp omelet he has ever had". Toast very unremarkable for a bakery. Eggs were ok - not bright orange which is what super fresh eggs would look like. Maybe these are eggs from a box/carton? Another colleague's "big breakfast" was cold when it came out. Most of us didn't like the potatoes- undercooked perhaps? Unflavorful sausage. Service prompt and friendly and nice clean place. Just not happy with the food.

I am visiting Galveston on business and this is the first place I ate at on the island and come here everyday that I am in town. The crab cakes and eggs are wonderful. My co workers enjoy the pastries. Always busy but not hard to get seated. They serve breakfast until noon weekdays and 3. Pm weekends. Please enjoy!!!

My ruben was great and so were my fries. Ask for John or Louie for your server. They are awesome. Everybody who works at the Sunflower Bakery & Cafe must be paid well, because everybody is pleasant, kind and generally seems happy to be there. Great food + great employees = success.

Nice place to eat at. The wait time for a table are very long. Then again we had a party of 10. The food was very good. I had the omelette with crab meat. It was very good. The waiter was a nice guy. He helped is order and took good care of us all. The mimosas were good too. Our friends ordered a carafe and we were able to taste the drink. I also ordered a side of bacon. That was a large side of bacon. Around seven strips or so. Love that bacon. I would go back, I just would rather go in a smaller group so I can hopefully get a table much faster.

I'm spending another 3-4 months here in Galveston with my family as I've done since I was younger. I've decided to explore Galveston as an adult and try something new and unfamiliar as much as possible, and after seeing this cafe on my bike rides home from work, I decided to give it a try. Working at another job in food service as a manager, I have to admit I'm pretty picky about my experience because I have done my best to never give bad service since that is what you pay for. I also get very annoyed when I see bad management or employees doing things I would NEVER do, and I'm only in my twenties. Anyway, I came in and a very nice girl welcomed me and allowed me to pick a seat, talked about the menu and got me a water I ordered. She didn't end up being my server which was sad because the girl who did serve me was rude. She greeted me as if she didn't want to be bothered and just had a very bad attitude. I honestly think it was because I'm young and look even younger so I seem as though I won't tip well. She left me at my table and seemed very annoyed when she returned and I still didn't know what I wanted. As I looked around, I saw many of the employees walking around aimlessly and talking, which baffled and annoyed me. I finally decided to order a bacon turkey and avocado sandwich. It arrived really fast, but the waitress with her bad attitude kinda of threw it in front of me and walked off to go flirt and talk with another waiter. It was pretty good. I mean, nothing special or anything, but it was okay. I got another water, and then asked for the check. I only spent about $15 including top, but this waitress again just printed my bill and stood flirting for 10 minutes while I waited as if I couldn't see her. She brought it, and while I was planning on giving her a nice tip to prove her wrong, I was so annoyed with her I gave her a few bucks, and gave a $5 to the nice girl who seated me as I left. Overall it's not a horrible place, and it was pretty homey and nice but the service kind of stunk and during lulls there's a lot of employees just kind of standing around. The food was okay, but nothing that really wowed me.

This place is busy and the food is good. Breakfast for two with juice cost $25. Their challah bread was delicious. Try it. And just a note, a side of bacon comes with like 7 pieces of bacon. I would definitely come back to this place again. So far it's one of my fav restaurants for breakfast in galveston. I haven't tried their lunch menu yet

I went here after running the Diva Half Marathon. The wait was a little long, but tolls expected since it was a Sunday and all of the racers wanted to eat there. I got the French toast and it was DELICIOUS. I scarfed it down in about 4 seconds. Very delicious.

Our front desk agent at out hotel recommended this little gem of a place in town for breakfast, and we are so glad we came! Exactly what we were looking for! Quaint cafe with a wonderful menu! Peter our server was so attentive and made our visit even better, he recommend the eggs Benedict and it did not disappoint! My boyfriend prides himself as being an eggs Benedict connoisseur. He has traveled all over the country and claims by far THIS WAS THE BEST HE'S EVER HAD!! The house made Canadian bacon was AMAZING!! We will definitely be back!! Thank you Peter for being one of the greatest servers we've had in awhile! Your hospitality was top notch!

Wonderful, creative restaurant. Some of the most unusual but great tasting combinations I have ever had. Long lines but everyone happy to be about to eat one of the best breakfasts in Texas. For a large place, service was excellent. Waiter extremely well trained. Will be back as soon as I can.

When vacationing, we try not to hit the same place twice, but the breakfast was so great we went back a couple of days later. Both times, we went early and were greeted quickly and with enthusiasm. First time, I ordered the Crab Cakes and Eggs, covered in a rich, creamy hollandaise. The standard order is poached eggs, but I requested scrambled (yolks creep me out). The crab cakes were tender inside and crisp on the outside, the scrambled eggs were unbelievably light and fluffy, and the potatoes were perfectly browned. The sauce was fair (a little too much salt, and a bit skimpy on the tarragon), but it didn't stop me from almost cleaning my plate. The portion was large, but luckily my husband helped me out. I ordered the rye sourdough toast, and it was perfect. I've long been trying to bake a decent loaf of sourdough, and this bread was inspiring! My husband ordered the Migas, and was in danger of licking the plate. The second time around, I ordered the Little Breakfast (two scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes and more rye sourdough). The sausage was oddly shaped - kind of like little loaves...looked like thick slices of Spam...but the taste was tops. The scrambled eggs and potatoes were, once again, delicious! Again, the portion was a bit much for me, but I had help. My husband chose the Spanish eggs (I forgot the name of the item, but it was eggs with salsa on a large corn cake). He said the Migas were better, but he enjoyed it regardless. He took a cream puff to go, and I ordered a couple of cookies. The bakery items were top-notch, and we bought a loaf of sourdough rye to take home with us. The staff was friendly and quickly refilled our beverages, and we really felt at home, having a leisurely breakfast and reading the newspaper. We'll definitely be back on our next visit!

Crab cakes with poached eggs was amazing!! One of my daughters had the chocolate chip pancakes and the were in here words, "the best ever!" Staff is friendly. Is it me or is every worker in this establishment angry at the world? Or maybe they don't like non-islanders...asians.... I usually don't let service detract that much from my food review...but everyone was that miserable. jalepeno cornbread (2/5) - awful. crumbly, dry, sour. sour?!?!?! why. not to mention i had to practically flag down/beg someone so that i could buy it from the pastry case. chicken hash (3/5) - good. not quite the hash i expected...more like large slices of potatoes. crab cakes and poached eggs (4/5) - yum. nice hollandaise curious to try the challah french toast. don't know i'd be willing to endure such animosity again just to eat breakfast.

The Big Breakfast is the perfect combination of eggs, pancakes and fruit. I've also tried the shrimp omelette and the challah French toast and all were delicious. The service is friendly and accommodating so I would definitely recommend this place when visiting Galveston. Be careful sitting outside. The birds might try to attack you.

We decided to bike over to the Sunflower Bakery when we noticed a line coming out of the door at another breakfast spot! It was a good thirty minute wait, but in the meantime, we snagged the last cinnamon roll and sipped a cup of coffee while waiting for our table. I thought the line at the bakery was a bit chaotic. People cutting and not taking turns... But... the wait was worth it. I really liked my Eggs Benedict and the accompanying potatoes that came with it. I tried my breakfast companion's shrimp omelet and it was pretty tasty, too. I thought the bakery and antique store was good - especially for taking home some baked goods and/or window shopping while you wait.

The best place to eat on the island, hands down. In fact, it's one of the only good restaurants here! I love close by and go there often. Everything I've ever ordered has been fresh, tasty, and well-prepared. The bakery is awesome! German chocolate cake and coconut cream pie is uh-mazing.

This place was recommended to us, but I wish we hadn't stopped in. The food was good, sure, but man-o-man it was the worst service ever! The guy's name was Zan, and he clearly didn't give a crap about serving us an enjoyable meal. Once he dropped the food off and refilled our coffees, we didn't see him again until we had been finished eating and out of coffee for a good while. And he just asked us if we wanted coffees to go, not if we needed anything else. We asked if he could bring more coffee and we'd also like to try some baked goods. Forget about it... we never saw him again. We saw him fill his coffee pot and take it out to the patio... while avoiding looking in our direction, but no coffee for us. I had to ask another waitress to please bring our check so we could leave. We had planned on taking home several baked items, but we're no longer interested... we just wanted to get out of there. The place was noisy and smelled of sour milk.

WOW this is such an amazing restaurant I don't even know where to start. Went here during a day trip to Galveston and was blown away by the polite staff and delicious food. We were so impressed by their tomato basil soup that we ordered another bowl to take home with us. We also ordered the fried chicken and BLMT- both were impeccable. Great prices, great food, and great atmosphere. You can't beat it!

All these good reviews had me excited thinking I found a potentially great lunch spot, but instead I feel so let down with a meal that ended up being pricey and only so-so. I had the turkey bacon avocado sandwich which was good...but only if you got a little bit of everything in one bite. It was really messy and the turkey was incredibly dry. I had to gulp down water after every bite! Husband ordered the Cuban...his go to sandwich, but this one was the worst one he's had on the island. It came absolutely soaked in oil, literally the bread was soggy from being soaked! It's like they dipped it in oil before serving it. My husband also hates cole slaw and it came with his meal even though he mentioned it before ordering and asked if he could substitute it for anything else (waitress just said no, nothing else). Their lemon bars were a little dry. The bakery looks okay so I might stop by to pick up their homemade bread, I saw some promising focaccia. Not sure ill have another meal here, though. UPDATE: Came back to try some more desserts and was still disappointed. Tried the coconut pie and the chocolate pie. Coconut was okay but the chocolate was terrible with almost a dirt aftertaste. This place is cute but it's just too expensive for not so great food.

My friend and I, came for our birthday breakfast after looking at all the pictures and reviews on Yelp! We definitely do not regret choosing to come here. We ordered Strawberry Mimosas, Challah French Toast, Egg White Omelet with Strawberry pancake, wheat toast and the breakfast potatoes. Everything was amazing, I didn't want to stop eating. I will absolutely be back and I have already recommended it to others.

An absolute gem in Galveston. Definitely recommend a visit whenever you're in the area. Hidden on a small street but definitely worth the drive. It was our first time there. Very adorable and charming cafe connected with a gift shop filled with antiques, jewelry and collectables. Check them out while you're waiting on your table or on your way out! There was a bit if a wait being that it was only my boyfriend and I. But now I can definitely see why! Service was great and the food was absolutely delicious. Presentation was amazing and appealing as well. Definitely recommend an outdoor seating if it's a nice day. Tons of sweets and baked goods to choose from, you'll get a great view of what they have to offer on your way in and out of the cafe. It has became my ultimate favorite breakfast or brunch go to! :) Love to recommend "Crab cakes with poached eggs and potatoes" absolutely delicious! Be sure to stop by and give this place a try if you're in the area, you'll won't regret it!

Great place for breakfast in Galveston. Staff were pleasant, coffee was above average, and the bakery case was packed. Took several bags of treats (including awesome cookies) back to Houston for my friends. A very refreshing break from the all-too-common doldrums of bland, touristy Galveston. Leave your hotel. Go try them.

I really loved this place. Thank God my parents suggested it over the Waffle House before returning home from Galveston! I had to actually flip a coin to decide what I wanted because it was taking me over a half an hour to decide!! I went with the tuna salad on sour dough and their famous tomato basil soup. The sandwich was fantastic. I am not a mayo lover, so I appreciate that they didn't over due it like many others. The bread was fresh and tasty. The soup was just as good as everyone else has said! I loved that it had big chunks of tomato in it!! And oh so creamy! As for my parents' food...my dad had the chicken fried steak and they gave him a generous amount of gravy on the side upon request. He said the veggies were super fresh and tasty. My mom's salad didn't come out looking like what you would expect with the description. She's a 'big salad' kinda woman and it was delivered on a plate with mostly meat and very little greens(hence the 4 star instead of 5 star). On to the bakery. I had the strawberry cheese cake square, mom had the lemon bar, and dad had the chocolate cream tart. All AMAZING! Then the beautiful bread caught my eye!! I HAD to have the focaccia! It has yummy sliced tomatoes and cheese on top and cost the same as one of those pastries!! I am so glad I had something to take home and enjoy later. We sat outside and had the entertainment of watching the birds steal creamers off of the table and drink them! I guess my only complaint(besides the deceiving salad) would be that the service is a little lacking. When you have all fresh ingredients you need to be knowledgable. I overheard the lady at the table behind us ask her server what some good vegetarian recommendations would be. He fumbled and asked her if she wanted seafood. After telling him no, he recommended salad and something that had bacon on it. I know they had more options than that! Not being picky, it just seemed like a simple question. Overall great food! We will be back. Especially because I want to try some breakfast and a carafe of memosas!

So good. I try alot of benedict versions. The lump crab benedict was one of the best I have ever eaten. It featured large tasty crab with perfectly cooked muffin and eggs. The sauce was interesting with a hint of a kick. Nice coffee choices, and the pastries look tempting. It is a counter service place and has a very well done physical plant with a pretty patio space. When visiting Galveston again, we WILL be back!

Ok so I am always looking for a good breakfast. I never seem to find a really great one though. Luckily for me with the help of Yelp I have found the best breakfast around. The place itself is easy to get to from the seawall. We were seated promptly since we got there early( there was a 20 min wait when we left). On to the food. You have your usual breakfast items like the small breakfast my wife had which consisted of 2 eggs(any style), meat(the ham was a nice thick slab), breakfast potatoes(red potato slices with some peppers), and 2 slices of toast. It's a bargain at under 7 bucks. I went all in and had the eggs and crab cakes. 2 awesome crab cakes topped with poached perfect eggs and hollandaise sauce. It came with the potatoes and toast as well. First off the eggs on both our dishes were cooked perfect and you could tell by the dark yolk they were very fresh. The crab cakes had plenty of crab and the sauce was heavenly. The coffee was the only let down. There is also a bakery inside where you can buy an assortment of amazing looking pies, cookies, muffins, ect. They even had a chocolate dipped pecan pie I will have to try next time. A freekin slice of pecan pie dipped in rich chocolate. I'm planning my next trip to the island already.

This place is delicious and reasonably priced for the quality and quantity of food. Everyone at our table had the poached eggs on crab cakes. Wow. It was amazing. At 12.00 bucks for that meal, we would be paying $25.00 in the loop in Houston where we live for that quality. We sat outside on the patio and enjoyed the weather. Their waffles looked amazing, and everyone had plenty of food around us. Basically, it was a great experience. The service, food, prices, and patio atmosphere make it an instant winner.

It has literally been months since I have gone out for breakfast/brunch. I have always worked in the bar biz before moving to Galveston so I was never up early enough to take advantage of early morning food. Now that I am on a regular 9-5 schedule I can see myself coming to places like Sunflower Bakery and Cafe on a regular basis. We came around 11:30 for brunch on Sunday afternoon and the place was packed full of people. We thought about going and trying something else but it was sunny, warm, and Sunday so everyone and their mother was out that day. We were quoted about 20 minutes for a table inside and it only ended up being about 15 minutes which was nice. We were greeted at our table right away by the server who took great care of us. We ordered two mimosas while we looked over the menu. There were a lot of great looking items and I could not decide what I wanted. I ended up going for the Migas which were eggs scrambled with jalepenos, tomatoes, onions and served with a flour tortilla and beans. My boyfriend got the chicken and waffles which he let me try. Both items were really good! I could not resist and went and looked at the bakery case and found chocolate chips cookies and a chocolate croissant to take home with us. Next time I hope to sit on the patio but the inside was so cheery and bright. Everything was awesome!

I knew I was in the right place when a saw an older guy at a large butcher block table in short sleeves and a short tie. There was something about his outfit that told me he added added the tie just for breakfast. The menu has some great choices, but since it was cool outside I had fried oysters and poached eggs. I felt like they took a chance with that one, and pulled it off. There is plenty to choose from - serving crab at breakfast always takes guts. The staff was great. Galveston needs to get out and see the world of coffee. This ain't it. Just the same, great fried oysters for breakfast makes up for it. Next time I'm wearing a short, clip-on tie.

I was in Galveston for a short stop on an epic road trip from Rhode Island to Mexico and the Sunflower was recommended to me by a local. I had the most delicious breakfast - but what prompted me to submit this review is the exceptional service I received from Antonio, one of the servers. He was so friendly and kind and is the reason I will absolutely return to the Sunflower Bakery. I was on my own and we had one of those great, spontaneous conversations that made me smile for the rest of the morning. Proof that there are still those places and people that can make you feel at home - even for a Rhode Islander who was VERY far from home. Gracias Antonio!!!

In my opinion, Sunflower has some of the best breakfast in town. Check them out for breakfast or lunch.

Friendly local cafe where everyone seemed to have a smile on their face. I had a philly cheesesteak sandwich (amazing); husband gad a shrimp po-boy but there was no tarter and cocktail sauce on it (as stated on the menu) which made it very dry and made him grumpy. Had a cheesecake brownie and chocolate dipped pecan pie for dessert. Both excellent. Nice patio, nestled in neighborhood, low key, and there is a store connected that was closed but looked pretty cool to go into when open.

Challelujah to the Challah french toast! Delicious! Yelping around, this seemed to be the best breakfast spot before embarking on our cruise ship. The restaurant is pretty huge - 2 large rooms plus the outdoor patio seating. We opted for patio as it was a nice and sunny day. Walking past the fresh baked goods was torture, the cinnamon roll beckoned us. The rest of the bakery selection seemed average. We ordered the challah french toast and the crab cake with poached egg. The challa french toast was amazing! it was light, sweet, and fluffy - infused with enough syrup that I didn't need to add more. The crab cake with egg was ok. The fresh fruit that came on both plates weren't that great. Service was ok. I'd definitely come back for more. Maybe grab a cinnamon roll to go next time.

Do not get a cup of the tomato soup.....GET A BOWL Cause at 2 am you are going to wake up dreaming about this soup and then you'll have some left overs...(Oh yea ask for some extra bread when the bag it up)......

Excellent food! Enjoyed breakfast here while on vacation. Unique specials breakfasts "of the day" and a fine looking traditional menu. I had the carne guisada with scrambled eggs. Delish! This will probably be the one place we eat at twice while in Galveston! That says a lot for us!

We were not impressed. We visited with our 10-month old twins and my in-laws one Sunday because it was the only place open and which could accommodate two babies. We ordered an avocado salad for the babies and told the waiter to bring it out as soon as it was ready (rather than waiting for all the food to be ready). We waited and waited and waited and finally asked the waiter, then waited some more and finally asked a different server who brought it out immediately. My husband ordered the sausage gumbo. It had a single half-slice of sausage in it and was exceptionally bland except for TONS of black pepper. We used to live in New Orleans and this was NOT gumbo. The other food was only ok and the service continued to be terrible. Our waiter served the food, minus one thing we ordered which we never got and which still showed up on our bill, and didn't ask if there was anything else we needed. Then he was gone for ages and finally we tracked him down to get iced tea and water refills and an extra tartar sauce. 5-10 minutes later, he finally brought the refills but still no tartar sauce. We asked for our check and waited and waited some more. Finally, I took the babies and left with my in-laws and my husband asked to speak to the manager to finally pay our bill. I will not be going back.

Meh. I was slightly disappointed when after reading all those amazing reviews, my food was just Meh. We made it for lunch right before we were headed back to Houston and decided to give this place a try. I had the pork sandwich and it was just OK. I have had MUCH better. The salad was also just blah. Maybe I just didn't like the dressing. Then dessert, it just tasted like flour! No flavor at all in the lemon bar. Sad day. Maybe we need to try this place again for breakfast. I mean, you can't mess up breakfast too badly right? :-/

Stopped in for breakfast on a Saturday morning. I've seen a few reviews commenting on surly waitstaff, and that mirrored my experience with the first gal who showed me to my table. That said, the place was crazy busy, so it's understandable. She was the last surly employee I saw. The waitress was friendly and attentive. I ordered the eggs and crab cakes, and I was not disappointed. The eggs were poached to perfection, the crab tasted fresh, and the hollandaise sauce was silky smooth and sublime. Red potato hash brown/home fries rounded it out. Be warned, this place can get loud. My wife and I sometimes had difficulty hearing one another or our server because of the acoustics of the place. Other than that, though, I really have no complaints. The service was good, the food top-notch, and we didn't even have to wait for a table. Coffee wasn't the best, but restaurant coffee rarely is. At any rate, I would definitely stop here again.

Food was great! Crab cakes Benedict, cooked perfect! Pancakes were really good too. Deducted one star because it took 30 minutes for food to arrive, after waiting an hour to be seated. Bakery items looked awesome, but I was too full to try any. Next time!

The sunflower was one of my favorite places to eat when I lived on the island, and I miss it dearly! It isn't a far walk from UTMB, but from any hotels I would say you should drive. The breakfast is some of the best I've ever had! The bacon is real thick and tasty! The lunch menu had a wide range to choose from. I enjoyed their fries and tomato soup the most!! Never had any of their baked goods, but they all looked so good!

Decent food but not worth the poor service and long wait to recieve your food after you order. I have been coming to this place a long time. The food for lunch and dinner are good and the brunch is great! My rating more reflects a consistent bad to terrible service. The waitstaff is slow and generally unconcerned. This place is fine if you have a long time to eat but not if you are in anyway concerned for time. In addition, they staff seems to be fussing at each other ALL the time and unhappy. On my most recent trip, our food (crab cakes, shrimp, the seafood salad, beef wrap) arrived luke ward to cold. We were never offered refills on our drinks. We had to flag down waitstaff and we arrived before the lunch crowd. The hispanic gentleman who passed himself off as a manager was completely uninteresting in our experience ! He definately seemed as if he was just too busy to care or be bothered. The person who sat us seem hurried and not pleasant. Over the past 8 years I have been here many times, mostly because friends choose it and I really think the service is amazing bad. I think the value for price at this place is lacking. Overall extremely overated. I even like the good baked goods but cant make up for bad service, dirty tables, flies and lukewarm food. I think Misquito Cafe (1 block down) or Farley Girls does a much better job for lunch with better service and atmosphere.

I LOVE the Sunflower Cafe and can't wait to get back there! Every meal is wonderful and the bakery.....OMG! The best! Our family spends a lot of time on the Island and we can't leave until we eat at the Sunflower. We always bring bakery items home to Houston. I wish there was a way to give my favorite restaurant more than five stars because the Sunflower Cafe earns all five and MORE! Best food on the Island!

Holy Cheesecake Brownie, Batman! We just went for dessert and it was definitely worth the trip. There are so many options at the bakery whether you have a crazy sweet tooth or are more of a "bready" kind of person. I ended up getting my husband and I a cheesecake brownie, banana nut muffin, and a cream cheese danish. The cheesecake brownie was out of this world. We didn't eat it until a couple of days later and it was still moist and absolutely delicious. I offered my husband a bite and he ended up eating half of it! My husband said the banana nut muffin was ok, but not the best he ever had. He said it tasted like they put nutmeg on the top which tasted a little weird. The cheese danish was delicious. I heated it up for the next morning and it was amazing. The amount of frosting was perfect and they didn't skimp out on the amount of cream cheese used. I will definitely be going back next time I'm in Galveston.

Best place for breakfast in Galveston, hands down! The service was impeccable and the food was delicious. I would say out of all the local restaurants I visited during vacation, it was the most charming. Save some room for their bakery items as they are really flavorful and rich! One tip would be to arrive early for breakfast as the place gets crowded by 9am.

I wanted to give this place 5 stars. The food was so good, and the deserts in the window gave you a sugar high just looking at them! But, our server was terrible. We came in for brunch. It was not to hot outside yet, so we opted for the patio seating. There are only 6 or 8 tables out there and 2 servers. He came by our table and took our drink orders. Didn't really make eye contact with us when he dropped the drinks off. No biggie I assumed he was busy. When he took our order, my boyfriend asked if there was a different option for the meal he wanted to be baked instead of fried, the server said no he said no worries he still wanted it. When he finally dropped our food he forgot what my boyfriend had ordered. When we asked him about it he told my boyfriend that he didn't order it ( anyone that is or has been a server knows that's a big no no) So we assured out server he ordered it and he still wanted it. He brought something else out within 30 seconds. It still wasn't correct. Finally the 3 time he brought it out. We didn't see him until I had to ask him for the check. Another table of his actually got up and refilled their own water. He didn't seem to care about his job at all. The food though. Oh my god it was great! I ordered the Waffle with eggs and bacon. The waffle can topped with a berry cream. I am not a fan of fruit but it was really good! My boyfriend also ordered a waffle, but he added the soft shell benedict. He was raving about it! The food was so good it was to the point where you are full and you can't stop eating it. If I am in the Galveston area again I will have to stop. I will just make sure I don't get that server.

We Absolutely loved this place! We stopped by here for some breakfast and sweets. The big breakfast (I know, pretty boring compared to what's on the menu) was very good! The pancakes where tasty and not heavy which left us with plenty of room for desert! Both the regular and cheesecake brownie where DELICIOUS! My wife had the cheese Danish which was excellent and we took some other desserts back home to family who loved everything they had (slices of various cakes). It was about 10 on a Thursday morning and very busy so plan accordingly if you decide to stop by!

We made a day trip to Galveston and our first stop was The Sunflower Bakery and Cafe for lunch. Food was very good. My wife had the grilled salmon and I had the sprimp and avocado tacos that was part of the lunch specials. Both are dishes were very good and the salmon was cooked to perfection. For desert we shared the cheesecake brownie and it was delicious. Give this place a try when your in Galveston.

I was so excited to get home and chow down on my chocolate chip cookies..... Until I bit into one and noticed it also contained nuts. The sign said chocolate chip. It had NO sign or warning that the cookies would have nuts. This is a health issue! and naw I have wasted $10 on cookies I can not eat. Very disappointed.

I had breakfast here twice and it was good. On the last visit I had a grilled chicken sandwich with guacamole and jalopies and it was so dry I did not enjoy it at all. Had to dip it in ketchup to add some moisture. The food also took a long time to prepare. French fries were good and crispy. The atmosphere is great. So disappointed with the food this time. Hopefully just a fluke this time, but my father went a couple of weeks ago and had same problems.

Great Breakfast This place is very good, and the baked goods are too die for! The meals were large and the service was top notch. I had one of the most delicious cinnamon rolls in my life, and I wish I could have eaten more food as the bakery just looked awesome. We had a large party and the service was spot on. This is a large restaurant, but we still had a small wait. The eggs were very good and everything really was done right making this a great breakfast spot in Galveston. I almost forgot, the eggs benedict was awesome, they had little ham steaks on them, and this was fantastic.

Sunflower Cafe, fate just did not want us to eat here - they had power issues the morning we were headed out of Galveston, and responsibly were only selling items out of their bakery case. We grabbed a cinnamon roll and a cheddar/chive scone, both of which were delicious.

I swear, I believe this is a first I've ever given anyone 5 stars! How didn't I know about this place last 3 times I've visited Galveston, I've no idea! First of all, they ground their own coffee beans, before I saw the grinder, I took one sip and *snaps* I knew this was a fresh brew, a fresh grounded brew! So good you can drink it black! I had the bread pudding french toast topped with fresh fruit (blueberries, strawberries, pineapple, canteloupe, strawberries) and *gasp* oh yes they did, they tossed them with chocolate chips and pecans. Heaven on plate! My daughter had the crab cakes with poached eggs and hollandise sauce with toast from their own homemade bread...We literally cleaned our plates! On our way back home, I bought cream puff, chocolate dipped pecan pie, chocolate biscotti and a scone...yep! I told my daughter, I would make 4-1/2 hours drive just to eat breakfast at this place again!

Not too shabby, but I only am rating the cafe part. I had the oyster poboy. The oysters had a nice, seawater taste. Very clean. The bread was what makes this just an oyster sandwich and not a true poboy. You HAVE to have CRUSTY french bread. The bread this was served on was quite tasty and fresh, but nothing like what you get in south LA. It was a tasty and filling sandwich, but not a po boy. The service was decent, but I could overlook the flaws because the waitresses are SMOKIN hot. If they ever come out with a Girls of The Sunflower Bakery & Cafe in Playboy, buy that shit.

Great service and great food. I wish this place was in Austin. It is a full service restaurant with delicious salads, sandwiches and more. I had their homemade chicken and vegetable soup and it was perfect. We also had the avocado salad and why is this place not in Austin? Their chicken salad was as good as my mom's and my husband had the spinach salad and loved it. We walked inside and saw their delicious cheesecakes, fresh bread and chocolate covered everything. You've GOT to give this place a whirl!

One of the many secrets local islanders love to share! But I'd only recommend Sunflower for breakfast. Their Bread Pudding French Toast is like breakfast and dessert all in one! The migas and Belgian waffles are both incredibly filling. "Homemade" strawberry- lemonade was a little too sour for my taste but the coffee is decent and prices are reasonable. I'd go a little down the street to another local cafe after noon, but before then, give Sunflower a chance!

Hooray for Galveston on the rise, once again! The Sunflower Cafe & Bakery was our stop for brunch last week. The Challah french toast is awesome and the blueberry pancakes were to die for. When I ordered my delectable Challah french toast I was thrilled. I was, however, not so thrilled to be handed Log Cabin brand syrup to go on top. Seriously, french toast that holy and delicious deserves 100% pure maple, and I am sacrificing 1 star solely on that qualification. The decor has a good start, but the place is big with lots of tables and the walls are pretty bare. I like the yellow and blue look, but it would be nice if they found a local artist or something to hang their work. It would be a great gallery space with the lovely windows and lighting. It was rainy and chilly when we went, but it looks as if their patio would be a great place to sit out on a sunny day. Service is like Rachel P. says, goofy. They are extremely nice, but kind of awkward. Overall, go for it. Maybe just bring your own flask of maple syrup with you. Then you'll be set.

WONDERFUL!!!!!! I was very disappointed with the entire restaurant experience in Galveston. High prices for small amounts and just plain ordinary food. Not here. Pancakes get a 10 out of 10, Eggs Benedict get a 12 out of 10, best hollandaise sauce I have ever had. The atmosphere was wonderful as well.

I head to Galveston about 4 times a year to visit my mom and my step-dad. Every time, I come to Sunflower at least once. By the time I get off of my exit, I start to crave it! We always try to hit right between breakfast and lunch so that we can order off of both menus and have a mimosa. The salad with the fried goat cheese is great, as is the tomato basil soup! Yum! Really, I haven't had anything here that I haven't liked!

The food is ok, the service is ok. There is nothing spectacular or that stands-out for me about this spot, but they do a good job for what it is. Pretty simple southern Texas food fare and baked goods. I wish they had something on the menu for breakfast that wasn't eggs, bacon, waffles or pancakes. Maybe an oatmeal or a granola, I would totally order that. I had migas, I couldn't finish them all, but they were pretty good. Nice spice.

I can't complain when it comes to "off the seawall" dining in galveston, it's always a hit and this was no exception. The last Saturday in Spring Break saw lots of bikini's, tourists, drinks and...fog? That's right, fog and an eerie fog over Galveston that masked the beach and brought the cold weather. Even though it felt like we were in a bad horror movie with this low down cloud cover, people were still trying to enjoy the water. So what do you do when it's too cold to swim? EAT! As dinner time rolled around, we were cruising down the seawall and noticing masses of people waiting around outside to be sat at almost all of the restaurants. Thanks to one of our local island buddies we headed down to The Sunflower Bakery & Cafe where it was like a breath of fresh air, no wait! Decked out in yellow's and blue's with a country home feel I was excited to try it, and were seated promptly. There are two sides to this place, on the left where we were seated it has an odd floorplan with awkward countertops that seem to have no function, also half of this room has track lighting and half the room has fluorescent, we were seated next to the countertop with estranged bus tubs in the fluorescent lighting area. After ordering, the big table next to us was becoming way too rowdy so we asked to move to the right side of the restaurant and WOW! 180 degrees over there, dim lighting, cozy and free flowing floorplan. For future first timers, this side would be the place to ask to be seated in( or the patio when the weather permits), it has a much more relaxed vibe. I will say that the service here is a big miss, our waitress took a considerable amount of time to get our drinks, and it was another 10 or 15 minutes before she came back to get our order and 50 minutes to bring out our food. By the time our food had arrived we were starving, and for two bowls of their famous tomato soup, a stuffed avocado salad and a fried shrimp and crab cake plate, it seemed a little long to be waiting. The tomato basil soup was very good, some flavor resemblence to a chain of "french" restaurants with the word "La" in front of their name, but thinner and had sliced onions, basil and tomatoes in it as well. The fried shrimp and crabcake was good but nothing special, batter was a little too thick and the crabcake consisted of more cake than it did blue crab. Apparently, the thing to get here is the stuffed avocado, you can get it with a choice of chicken, tuna, egg or potato salad. My friend had the tuna and it was yummy!. For dessert, we walked over to the display of baked goods and were highly impressed. I chose the buttermilk chess pie and my cousin had the cinnamon roll. Buttermilk chess pie was good, but not as good as mine! Cinnamon roll, was ok, not enough icing! I'm a fan of this place because on approaching of beach season, this place offers pretty much everything that the seawall restaurants offer, but at almost half the price, no wait time, no parking wars, and a quaint atmosphere. The menu consists of salads, sandwiches, soups, pastas, fried foods and great desserts. A favorite of the locals, and I'll be back!

Basically, Sunflower is very hit or miss depending on the items you order. Deli sandwiches and baked goods here are fantastic. In fact, their turkey, bacon and avocado is divine. However, the hot sandwiches are overly greasy and the one entree I've gotten (crab cakes) didn't impress me much. Breakfast is likewise hit or miss. The pancakes, french toast and breakfast potatoes here are great, but a lot of their breakfast plates are very, very heavy. There is too much cheese or hollandaise in many and the last time I got an omelette I had to wipe away cheese because there was just that much of it. I recommend the big or little breakfast, pancakes, waffles or challah french toast. Coffee is unextraordinary. Also the wait can be quite long on weekends, and we've occasionally had to eat elsewhere to avoid a half hour wait for a table.

There are few better places to eat in Galveston. The Sunflower Bakery has a variety of fresh breads to choose from and a great selection of sandwiches. I like to get the turkey and swiss cheese sandwich on a croissant. If you're a fan of tomato soup then you'll be pleasantly surprised when you find that they have some darn good tomato soup. It's on par with La Madeline's soup, but not at all similar. Enjoy!

I thought I would write a update to the my review. After eating brunch I saw the deserts at the counter and thought about my wife,,, who has a sweet tooth. I picked up a slice of cheese cake and chocolate cookie to take back to our hotel. The cookie was not very good and the cheese cake tasted awful. It was so bad my wife thought I was pulling a joke on her. I know now not to buy deserts at the bakery on future trips to Galveston.

Wow!! Ordered the smoked chicken hash and it was wonderful. Hash with two perfect poached eggs and chipotile hollandaise. Only fault was a cold biscuit. The others at my table had quail and eggs and a traditional breakfast. Great service. I'll be back. And don't forget the pastry counter.

Good lord, if only I lived in Galveston! The last two times I've visited, my fantastic aunt Alice M. has brought me here. Once for breakfast, and let me just tell you that the assortment of baked goods was very pleasing indeed. But what we didn't know was how amazing their dinner menu was going to turn out to be! What a treat! I sampled the duck that another person at my table had, and everyone there had nothing less than songs of praise about their meals as well. Apparently, this is a limited commodity as dinner is only served on Saturday nights. Worth the wait all week, clearly! My tortilla-encrusted snapper with crab meat pico de gallo was outstanding! Sunflower, I kiss yer feet!!!

Good, hearty breakfast. Shrimp omelet was a bit cold but good. Only major complaint was that my diet coke came in a can. I hope the soda machine was broken because there really is no excuse for not having fountain drinks, for taste and to decrease waste. And even if they are recycling the cans ... People expect fountain drinks at restaurants in the States. With refills. Will try this place again.

I love the food at Sunflower. Anytime I'm within 25 miles of this place, I make plans to eat there. The best thing about this place......the food! Consistently, the food is great. Always fresh, hot and delicious. However, you can absolutely tell when you get there whether or not the owner is on the property. I have been here numerous times, but my visit last week was the worst. I arrived on a weekday, around 1:30. When I entered, I stood and waited for several minutes to be seated. Finally, after great discussion between 2 employees as to who HAD to seat me, I got a table. My server was good.....nothing spectacular, but good. Upon finishing my meal, I told my server that I would like to get some baked goods to take with me. I was told these charges could be added to my meal ticket. Went to the bakery counter and relived my arrival at the resaurant. Two employees animatedly discussed who would HAVE to take my order. After a while, a reluctant server took the order. I told her I wanted to add these items to my meal ticket, and she didn't respond. Upon completing my order, I again said I wanted to add these items to my order. She said I couldn't do that. She charged me for the bakery items. I then asked where I needed to take care of the meal ticket......I was told to go back to my table and wait for my server to return so it could be taken care of. Needless to say, getting seated and checked out took up more time than eating my meal! Very disappointed in the absolute lack of consideration for the customer. As I prepared to leave, I asked another server if the owner was on the property. Not surprising......he had been there earlier, but was gone at this time. If you can tolerate the lack of customer appreciation, the food is wonderful.

what a wonderful place this is! prompt seating, great food, very homey. The only very minor complaint I have is that they need to serve hot pancake syrup, not cold out of a store-bought bottle. They have great coffee, and a great little bakery counter that is filled with scrumptous goodies such as cakes, pies, cookies, tarts, and croissants. If you're a weekend visitor like I was and are looking for a great place for breakfast or brunch, you MUST try this place! You will be so glad you did. What a find!

Great place, great food, great value, great experience, and all this was a great surprise as we happened upon Sunflower by accident. We were at the port to collect our car and as the transaction was delayed we decided to get a bite to eat. What a wonderful surprise! Superb coffee, served in large blue glass mugs and then a wonderful breakfast of eggs, sausage and grilled red mashed potatoes done to perfection! We will return for what our neighbors were enhaling-- french toast!. Ahhh, next time!

I visted this place with my mother and we were seated after waiting only a few mintues. I ordered the pistachio snapper and it was delicious. My mother ordered the stuffed shrimp and it was also delicious. Our waiter was very sweet, even though he was a little difficult to understand (he had a soft, accented voice and the restaraunt was crowded). The only two complaints I have are very minor. First, the tables were really close to each other, so I felt like the screaming kid behind us was in my face, and second, they served me my diet coke in a can with a glass of ice. I love my diet coke and I always feel like I have to sip slowly when given a can with ice.

Came here yesterday when the recommended Mosquito cafe was closed. I ordered the seafood salad and my friend ordered the grouper special. The food was decent, nothing too special, but it just felt like they could have made things a bit healthier. My salad, supposed to be mixed greens, grilled shrimp, avocado and fried goat cheese, also was swimming in dressing and came with shoestring onion rings on top. I tried my friend's fish and it tasted like it was swimming in butter. We also sat outside and there were a lot of flies everywhere. I guess I felt like it could have been a bit cleaner and healthier. The salad came with some bread that was really good, but then I got a chocolate chip cookie for dessert and, for the cafe being a half bakery, could have been a lot better.

I ate here for brunch over the weekend with a bunch of people and it was fantastic! The crab cakes are a must get, as are they're gigantic mimosas--totally worth the $6.

Good, but noisy, and the service is often unreliable. It seems as though they get very busy and don't have enough waitstaff to handle everything, which is odd because it's like this every Sunday, so it's not as though they can't predict it. They also won't substitute a salad for the vegetables with a meal, which is annoying. The steak salad, which is offered occasionally as a special, is very good, but order your steak more well-done than you actually want. I asked for medium and it was pretty much raw off the cow. Ugh! Skip the Southern corn cakes, though. Heavy, greasy, flavorless.

Worth the wait in line. Friendly, fast service. Awesome food and menu items you can't find most other places! We would give this place five stars except there was a misunderstanding on our order but that was because this place was slammed!!!

Here's the easiest way to describe The Sunflower Cafe to my fellow Houstonians: It's like Brazil with a bigger menu, meets small town diner. Great brunch, huge selection of baked goods, and a cool gourmet gift shop. The coffee's not bad either. It will be busy for Sunday brunch but you're almost always seated immediately.

Service was awful. No one said hello, no one ever gave us a smile. Our server never introduced himself, just came by and asked what we wanted to drink and what we wanted to eat. Served the food without asking if there was anything else he could get us. The servers had plenty of spare time, they were congregating to talk around the server station. While they were there talking, a woman carrying two boxes and a bag of goods from their bakery walked by struggling to not drop her items, and not a single server offered to help. The service was quick, however, and, as my mom said, the food "wasn't bad." I'll give it 2 stars for that but I definitely won't come back.

To be honest, I am not writing about the cafe part of The Sunflower Bakey & Cafe, but rather their bakery. They have some of the best bread and pastries in the area (incl Houston). I have been going there to pick up my baguettes and was devastated to find out that they have not been able to make them since the storm...please bring them back!!

Just Visiting! Stayed the night in Galveston and decided on Sunflower for breakfast and a few goodies for the road. Food was good. Service was good(weekday morning). Baked items delicious! Loved the cream puffs, filled with diplomat cream. Oh my! Bought jalapeno cheddar bread and some danish and blueberry coffee cake(you must try this). Made for a great ride home. If ever in Galveston again I will stop by before leaving.

Horrible service!! Please hire new staff, Sunflower Bakery & Cafe!! I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but the service was totally inexcusable. We were put on the waiting list, and the hostesses let us wait, while they seated every other party there. The last straw was when they seated an incomplete party of twelve, just 5 minutes after they walked in the door, while my family of six had already been waiting for nearly an hour! When we approached the hostesses to inquire about being seated, they showed no concern what so ever! They simply told us to wait for the next table to open up. We were all outraged! After voicing our complaint with the manager, we left to have lunch at the Mosquito Café (just down the street). We were greeted by James, who gave us a warm welcome, and even took time out to give us some great menu suggestions. If you are in the neighborhood, skip Sunflower Bakery & Café, and head to Mosquito Café.

I personally like Sunflower, they're convenient since I live nearby and they have a take-out counter you can buy baked goods and sandwiches at. I will say I liked them better at the Church Street location, not only because it was a block from my house but it seemed like the food was better and service friendlier. This was probably because that was a really small place and they have expanded to the bigger 14th St location, but still... Anyway, by far my favorites here from the bakery are the lemon bars, cheesecake squares, blueberry muffins, and blonde brownies. They also have really good fresh baked bread, different kinds including the aforementioned awesome challah. I'm not sure if they still use it, but they used to slice the bread with this old fashioned manual bread slicer thingie. It was cool, but I don't know if they still have it after Hurricane Ike. They also have really good homemade(?) strawberry lemonade. As far as the food, I really like the chicken BLT sandwich, has a chipolte mayo and actual breast meat. They have a rotisserie, so either that's how they do the chicken or its roasted or something, but pretty good. Gotta get it at certain times though, I've had it on slightly old bread before (late right before they closed) and I've had grisly chicken (during the lunch rush). The chicken and potato salads are also good, if you get them as sides or on the salad plate. As far as hot entrees, they have a printed menu every day so it's somewhat varied, but they do serve a couple of fish dishes usually, a steak of some sort, chicken, pasta, the usual options. Usually about 10 or 12 choices a day, plus that standard sandwich/deli type of menu. One thing I will say about the sandwiches is that they are a la carte, only come with a pickle - average $6 each, and they're not gigantic, just regular sandwiches. So order something on the side (like dessert) they have fries and stuff or get two sandwiches. They do serve a brunch on the weekend (Sunday for sure, not positive about Saturday) and its actually very good. I've had the steak and eggs before and it was good for like 15 bucks, french toast good, plus they have mimosas. And I likes my morning drank :) I will say I agree that they have some service issues, especially since they have the new, bigger location. If you sit outside and there aren't a lot of people already out there, you may have trouble getting the attention of someone to help you. And yes it does take forever to get your food, especially on weekdays during lunch (school/hospital around corner) and on Sundays. Drink refills can be a bee-otch but whatever. That's their tip. Finally, if you happen to roll in here solo, they have several counter type areas set up, plus a big block table that single persons usually hang at since there's a big basket of newpapers and magazines in the middle. I like it there, with headphones on.

Worst experience ever!! We had a party of 6 and was told it would a 30 min wait which we were okay with, however, we ended waiting for an hour and still no table. The Hostesses were unfriendly and didn't even care about the customers! And the worst part was they proceeded to seat other parties of 7 and 12 of which they were on the bottom of the list and we were on the on top of list and justified it by saying it's a party a 12 and the table is made for a party of 12. And I told her "No, that is 2 tables of 6 that you just put together to make a party of 12 and they just walked in!" We were so furious about the experience and that they were wasting our time for no service and no food. Oh and on top of that, when we asked the hostess to speak to the manager she said in her "whatever" attitude that he was in the back but didn't even bother to go get him so after the pause, we had to tell her "well, can you go get him?" She proceeded to go to the back and came up back empty handed!! Thanks for ruining Father's Day!! We proceeded to Mosquito Cafe and the service was like night and day!! So warm and friendly unlike Sunflower.

This is a great place to go and have a very delicious meal. I have tried several of the dishes and have never been disappointed. I do wish, however, that they would allow dogs on the patio. Highly recommend this place to everyone I know.

This place is awesome! Fresh bread baked HOURLY, and to-die-for-soups, make this place a *must visit* everytime I am in Galveston. The chicken-fried steak and fresh pizza's are wonderful (you can see the brick-oven pizza from the register) I agree with the other reviewers that the service is somewhat lacking, but I've had that problem at most Galveston restaurants.
