Violet Crown Cinema is like that middle child you can't seem to forget about for so many reasons. A step up from Alamo Drafthouse and a step down from Gold Glass Cinemas at the Domain. I'll be honest, I didn't want to like this place. I've always seen my indie flicks at the Arbor cinema up north. Maybe newbies don't know its there? But Austin has always had a theater to get your lesser known movie fix. Even with the Dobie gone. I was spoiled by Dallas and its amazing cinemas like the Magnolia and the Angelika. For those of you who haven't been, they are just incredibly amazing on so many levels. Most comfy seats goes to the Angelika. I kept comparing these cinemas in my head while we were here, as if I were dating someone new and comparing them with the previous relationship. The cool: -Free 4 hour validated parking located underneath -Ticket prices aren't much more than the reg. chain theaters -$9 before 6PM, $11 after 6PM, $13 on wknds & after 6PM -You reserve your seats online -Cute bar to wait for your movie in or order food -The snack bar is reasonable w/ items that offer free refills -Side table flips out attached to your chair -Dublin Dr. Pepper! The less cool: -A little confusing to find if you've never been (its above How Do You Roll) -Don't sit on the ends near the wall if you're seeing a 3D film, it messes up the visuals -Free refills aren't helpful if you have to miss some of the movie to get your own refill -No cup holders...really??!!! -Reserved seating could be a problem if you have a big group buying tickets at different times -The name is the same as a bar on east 6th street.... I thought it kind of funny how no one took our tickets or showed us which theather or where our seats were. We could have easily just snuck in...but we didn't. I guess we were invisible. On another note the projection screen was high quality and visually stunning. The theater is really small, with stadium seating and some interesting looking lazy boys at the bottom which would have been nice to kick back and lay down in. I could see myself back here, in one of those.

I am a huge fan of theaters that cater to adults who like indie films. Not just because it means no rugrats will ruin a movie for me, but because it also means that there are little touches that only an adult would appreciate. Violet Crown has these little touches. One is not just a comfortable chair, but one that allows the sitter to shift and slide around without bumping your neighbor and has a head rest that is actually nice to settle into. Another great feature is the free refills not only on soda, but also flavored syrups for coffee. The last feature that I think isn't little but is in fact the linchpin for why this theater is a notch above any of the draft houses is that it has a gorgeous lounge and bar.

Austin Movie Lovers: Do you realize how totally awesome it is that Violet Crown Cinema has come to town?? One of the most glaring things Austin has been missing up until Violet opened last month was a good art house theater. I moved to Austin from the Dallas area and was spoiled by the Magnolia and Angelika theaters. Sadly, I would watch all the cool indie, art, foreign and documentary films sail through these theaters in Dallas but rarely make it to Austin. It was very frustrating and weird that Austin out of all cities didn't have so many of those types of films. Yes, we had the Dobie. It was unique, had history but just didn't serve up the films it should have consistently. Yes, we have the beloved Drafthouse. As much as I love the niche market the Drafthouse creates it still slacks majorly on the art house and especially foreign movie showings. This is why we had a void that needed to be filled that Violet Crown Cinema has done. Kudos to Violet Crown Cinema for that!!! Here is a breakdown of facts: --Violet Crown Cinema is meant to show films with more pedigree. If you like the big, typical, famous, blockbuster-written-for-a-buck films don't come here. If you don't like to read subtitles be careful because a lot of the films shown here are foreign meaning they are subtitled. --When your purchase your ticket either online or at the theater you get to pick your own assigned seat. This means that you can plan on sitting with those you come to the movies with even if you arrive at different times. This also means you can wait until the last possible minute to take your seat in the theater. No rushing to get good seats! --It is a GOOD thing to pick your seat(s) in the front row! Unlike most theaters none of the front row seats are up by the screen. Instead at Violet Crown the up front seats are pushed back at a comfortable distance and are recliners! They don't cost extra either. Next time I will be sure to book front row. Be aware that the theaters are tiny (only 4-5 rows) so some films could book up. --No commercials or cheesy jingles about turning off your cell phone before the films start. They do have previews but they are of the upcoming films that Violet Crown will be showing. --They have a full bar including Real Ale beers on tap and cocktails but NO wait staff serving inside the individual theaters. You take your food into the theater and they have fold out table-tops that are tucked in between each seat. There are no drink holders (unless you are in front row recliner) just the fold out tables. --Since there are no servers serving inside the theaters you will have to get up and walk out of the theater to go get anything else you may need. The nice part about this is that the aisles are wide enough to where you don't have to step on people's feet or move your feet out of the way if somebody is crossing by. The bad part is that if you need something you will have to move across people and miss part of the movie. --They have Maine Root drinks on fountain including Dublin Dr. Pepper on fountain. FREE REFILLS on fountain drinks and FREE REFILLS on popcorn. Wow. --The inside is like a small restaurant with plenty of tables to sit and eat and drink at plus all the room around the bar. Since they have assigned seating this means you can lounge and finish your stuff up right up until the film starts. This is a great place to socialize and hang out. It is a clean, modern swanky environment. --The theater is digital projection so the quality and beauty of the film is awesome. --Shows before 6PM are $9. Shows after 6PM are $11. Unless it happens to be a weekend/holiday--then you will pay $13. --They have a Happy Hour Monday-Friday with some specials like $3 draft beers. --Don't forget to bring in your ticket for validation for the free parking. The parking garage is on San Antonio Street. If you are driving North from Cesar Chavez go past How Do You Roll sushi on the corner of 2nd and San Antonio and you will see the entrance to the AMLI garage up on your right. --Violet Crown publishes a full color news publication showcasing all of their current films and upcoming films. Be sure to grab one to see what's in store. --Violet Crown is not some mammoth corporate chain. They are locally owned and operated. As always support local, support indie/art house/foreign movie houses! This is a great place to have a quality drink, eat quality food and see quality movies. Yes!

Perfect projection. Perfect sound. Perfect seating. If that was all that Violet Crown did, period, they would have succeeded in changing the way films are shown in Austin. But add in intriguing film programming, reserved seating, amazingly comfy chairs, a full bar with tasty food and a snack bar and you've really got a theater. Free 4-hour validated parking was conveniently located underneath, with specific directions on the website (enter on San Antonio, between 2nd and 3rd) for no hassle if you can read. I arrived about 40 minutes before showtime because I wanted to check the place out. The screening room hallway is a weirdly soothing futuristic high-tech looking space, in soft white and chrome, interesting but not too jarring. I kept thinking of set of 2001 or Solaris. Nice. The bar is a bit more contemporary with wood stools, tables in two areas and interesting lighting accenting the stained concrete finishes. It is spacious and comfy, and features a nice local draught beer selection. I had some shrimp spring rolls and a beer, then brought a cheese plate in with me to the theater. The spring rolls were large and a bit awkward to handle (you get three) but they were tasty as was the peanut sauce provided. The cheese plate could have used either toasted bread rounds or crackers. The bread provided was OK, just not crispy enough. The theaters are small, very steeply raked and feature high-backed chairs with great support and an extra deep seat pitch. 6 footers will have plenty of leg and knee room. All seats are good, from a sightline and sound perspective. (This is no Dobie) The front row features an upward tilted floor with big recliners for better viewing and includes wheelchair space and companion seating, a nice touch. All seats are reserved, so if you are going with friends, buy your tickets at the same time. Each seat has a pop up tray table on the side for your food or drink. The theater could be a bit darker (aisle lights are distracting if you are on the aisle), but the projected image is amazingly sharp and bright, and Klipsch speakers all over make for an immersive theater experience. Also, I do love ordering from my seat as is the practice at Alamo, but that is not the case here. Snacking or dining while viewing here takes a bit more advance planning and consideration of plate size versus tray table size at the seat. I'd suggest eating in the bar, then bringing a light/small snack and a drink inside. (Side Note: I saw "In A Better World," HIGHLY recommended) Best $11 movie ticket I've bought in a long time.

Pros: Looks nice and modern. Great selection of films. Parking garage was pretty easy to deal with. Cons: Not a fan of the assigned seats. Screens are WAY too small. Did not find the seats comfortable. I live a similar distance from the Arbor as Violet Crown and will generally choose the Arbor for bigger screens and better seats.

Our experience at the Violet Crown was not all we hoped it would be. It started off nicely - we had appetizers in the bar. The pork tapas and Mediterranean plate were both delish, and our server was very nice. I would probably have dinner elsewhere next time and have one of the dishes for a snack. They're not really meal sized and a little pricy. It was very cold in the bar, so I ventured to the snack bar to see if I could get some hot tea for the movie showing. No dice. Bummer. The snack bar dude was unhelpful all around. And if you're going to charge $5 for a chocolate bar, get something interesting and high quality like Theo. The theater was small but nice, the seats were comfy. But it was fricking freezing in there. My other complaint was the sound quality, at least in that theater (#2) was kind of hollow and poor. I noticed it during the previews and it continued into the movie, making it very difficult to understand the dialogue at times. I would go back (armed with a heavy sweater and a thermos) if something I wanted to see was playing there exclusively, but by and large I am an Alamo girl.

I love the location. And I love that you can reserve seats here. It means not having to show up super early to make sure your group gets seats together. That said, the projection quality and sound are good. The seats are moderately comfortable. They could be better. And using your smart phone as tickets is nice. I didn't try any of the food, or the bar, which is a nice touch. Really, the whole act of waiting in the lobby instead of in the theater resembles a theater experience, which I prefer.

I really like this place. I really-really like this place. I like this place so much that if you are a person I don't like, and you ask me on a date here, I will say yes. The inside is a little sterile, but somewhat slick and modern. The seats are by far the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in and the fact that all of them are reserved means that if you show up 10 minutes late for your film, there's no need to panic! You're not stuck on the front row ! You still get the exact seat that you picked out online! (I'm not saying how I know this, but if anyone can fill me in on what happened in the first 10 minutes of 'Certified Copy' that'd be great). The wine list isn't enormous, but it's better than you'd expect. They also have cheese plates, fruit trays, and a full blown menu. It's not like Alamo Drafthouse, where they bring it to you, but I don't mind getting up to refill my glass so long as I don't miss anything. I agree 100% with Steve B. as far as the projection, sound, and seating all being perfect and would like to add to that the location. I will definitely be back. And soon. I'm a sucker for foreign films and positively giddy that Austin now has such a fabulous place to view them.

If you get an opportunity to choose a seat in the front row, I would highly recommend it. The chairs in the front row are more like a lounge chair with an ottoman to stick your feet up on. It's as if you are watching a movie from the comfort of your own home.

Easy to use website, reserved seating, blasting A/C in the theater with comfortable chairs, and a snazzy bar with top notch food and drinks= a super fun experience that I look forward to reprising again very soon. Loved the cucumber martini for its refreshing flavor, and the pizza and med plate were fantastic. Yes, you need to get there about 45 minutes early to enjoy your food and drinks, and yes the people leaving their seats to get their food looked kind of awkward, but going once to test these nuances out will only make your future visit more enjoyable. It's pretty awesome to be able to watch a flick with a delicious cocktail in your hand. I love the experience at the Alamo, but this place caters to a more discerning palate with its fancier cocktails and well edited menu, making for a nice change in the routine movie trip. I highly recommend Violet Crown for an indie movie night.

Alamo for grownups. Reserved seats, real food and best of all no endless lectures about texting and chatter, just a single mention which is enough. I also like bringing in my own food because at Alamo i am interrupted by waiters at key times in movies. The location is also a plus as after the movie we walked to lambert's for music and Malaga for a snack. This place rocks.

Few things are more relieving than stepping into a movie theatre on a punishingly hot day. If that theatre happens to be the Violet Crown you are in for a real treat. The film selection is always fantastic. Indie, artsy, no blockbuster titles . The auditoriums are cozy, classy and aim to please in every way you can imagine. Leather seats, your own personal table, enough leg room to make even the tallest members of the NBA happy. You will not find yourself sitting next to a squirmy toddler, in fact you can assure that you and your date will be holding hands side by side due to their reserved seating policy. The menu is fancy but not over priced. May I suggest a glass of presecco with your popcorn? Rarely do things go together so well. Arrive early for perfect seating and hang out late in their bar, the staff is real nice.

Great downtown venue, convenient parking and comfortable seating. Somewhere here it says not good for kids, and maybe that's true because the lobby is bar like in character. But me and my 10 year old sat over by the window in the comfortable lounge chairs while we waited and it was fine. They had the Dublin Dr Pepper and it was amazing. And the seats were made out of leather so they were really comfy. But we're going to get the front row seats next time.

After I left the review, the owner of the cinema emailed us inviting us to come back to visit his theatre and apologizing for the bad service. We went back over the weekend and had a great time. We will be returning in the future.

I'm an Alamo girl, so I was a little skeptical heading to this place. But I really enjoyed it! We went to see Sleepwalk with Me, which no other theater in town had. Instead of showing previews before the movie, they had a local comedian do a little set, and he was pretty good. The Alamo is still my first choice, but if there's an indie movie that they don't have, I'll definitely return to Violet Crown again.

I have been to Violet Crown twice now. The first time I went I was disappointed that they didn't have the same type of "keep your phone in your pocket and dark" during the move warning that Alamo Drafthouse has. The guy in the row in front of me pulled his phone out to text or to look at messages about once every 5 minutes during the movie. Due the logistics of the seating, I would have had to walk in front of my whole row to get out and complain so I just did my best to ignore the distraction. Of course it was the rude guy's fault but I also sent an email to the theater afterwards to ask them to start carryiing a message before the start of the movie to directly tell people (who are too rude and/or clueless to figure it out on their own) to keep their cell phones dark during the movie. Fast forward to this past weekend, which was my second visit to Violet Crown. I was pleased to see that, in fact, they DID add a notice before the start of the movie to remind idiots (I mean customers) to keep their phones off during the movie. It wasn't as overt or funny as the Drafthouse warnings (I love those cartoon concession stand guys) but at least it was something, and nobody bothered me during this movie. I like the VC because it's a nice, clean theater and they have the offbeat, indy, arthouse films that are hard to find in Austin. For example, this weekend we saw Blackthorn which wasn't playing at the Arbor, so if not for VC, we would probably not have had the opportunity to see it. As for food, we only had popcorn and soda. The popcorn is a pretty pinchy portion ($6.00) but they have free refills (if you feel like getting up and leaving the theater during the movie to get it). I think they should just give you a larger bag to start with since popcorn costs them almost nothing in hard costs anyway. Let's face it, people don't want to get up to go get a refill during the movie.

This place is nice...except for the fact that you can hear the speakers from movies playing in adjacent rooms. I think they definitely need to add more insulation between their walls.

On first glance, Violet Crown Cinema might seem stuck-up. But even with its ultra-sleek modern decor, this place is still in Austin. It manages to have a fancy appearance while maintaining a laid-back attitude. And it's so nice to have good, independent/arthouse theater close by. No more driving up to the Arboretum! I love any place that will serve you beer while you watch a movie, and they have a great selection on tap. Just keep in mind that your Lone Star may be a bit overpriced. I haven't tried the food yet, but hope to soon!

Great place to watch arthouse / indi films. Good food, bar & love the theatre seating. Have seen two movies here, both experiences were great.

After visisting the place a few times, I have to admit I kind of like it. Being a frequent Alamo visitor, I have to say they are totally different, I like the occasional change. It is a different setup, different seating and smaller seating area. I sometimes enjoy seeing a movie with all adults. The food isnt bad either!

This place is no Alamo Drafthouse, but it's cool if you're looking for a more posh film-watching experience. Violet Crown is definitely fancier than the Alamo, with a parking garage (free with validation at the ticket counter), a little sit-down eating area, slightly higher prices, and more independent, art-house type films. Also, when you buy your tickets online, you get to choose your seat on a little seating chart! I've never seen that option for a movie theater before, so that was interesting/fun. Another perk of Violet Crown is it's incredibly less busy than Alamo. Admittedly, I went to a matinee, but still, it was just me, my man, and one other couple in our little theater. The staff was really nice, too. There weren't many cons to my experience, but I will say that my cucumber martini was somewhat strange tasting and not very cucumber-y, so I wouldn't recommend it. Overall, Violet Crown won't replace the Alamo in my movie-viewing rotation, but I'll definitely come back to see another flick. Probably when I'm feeling fancy.

Things I liked about Violet Crown: 1) They show independent films. The atmosphere of the theater is modern and hip, which adds to the experience of seeing such a film. 2) They validate parking - so even though the theater is in the heart of downtown parking is not as much of an issue as it could be. 3) Not a bad seat in the house. There is no risk of getting stuck way up at the front and having to be uncomfortable while you are trying to watch a movie. 4) you can "reserve" seats ahead of time on their website. Since the movie we saw was only half full anyway, I'm not sure how this would work in a packed showing. What I did not like: 1) I was expecting something akin to the dining experience of Alamo Drafthouse, except perhaps a little classier. There is no service during the movie (it says this on the website) so you must order food & drinks ahead of time at the snack bar (even though the food is much more than regular snack bar food). Not that big of a deal unless you are one of those people who tends to get to a movie right before the start time. 2) if you DO get food, it has to go on a little table that folds down from your seat immediately in front of you. It is just like sitting in a school desk to watch a movie. And if you want those plates out of your way? You need to leave the theater and get rid of them yourself. I didn't enjoy that so much. I didn't see any drink holders either... The atmosphere was fun enough that I will probably go back, but I won't plan on getting anything to eat or drink unless there is time to go to the Violet Crown's bar beforehand.

This theater is so awesome! Tickets cost the same $10 you will pay at any other theater, but your viewing experience here is so much better! The theaters are small (maybe a few dozen seats in each) with very comfy seats and small fold up trays for your snacks. No cup holders, though. Every seat in the house is good, including the front row. Your specific seat is reserved when your purchase a ticket, either online or at the theater before the show. With fewer seats the shows can sell out so buy early if there is something you really want to see. The snack bar has movie fare and a few extra classier snacks, like hummus and pita. There is also a very nice bar here with cocktails and a small menu. It would be a great way to impress a date or out of town visitors. Parking is free in the AMLI garage with validation. I recommend a sweater; like most other theaters the AC is on high!

Me likey! Not much else to add to these reviews, but it's just SO Nice to have a cool theater downtown. We used to frequent the Dobie, still go up to the Arbor and are fanatical SXSW film pass believers. I really appreciate the effort to make it cool. We've enjoyed the lounge, drink specials and were there the first week they opened. I wonder if they will have a little in-theater service in the future, but that would actually probably be more distracting since people would be more likely to order (hello Alamo! which I still adore of course!) and servers would be running wild. So get there early, order your stuff and enjoy a well picked movie. I am a little surprised they are showing Midnight in Paris, since I thought that was a big movie theater pick, but I guess it's a Woody Allen film so that counts as artsy. I saw 2 of the 3 movies coming at SXSW and they were both great. AUSTIN THANKS YOU FOR OPENING!

So far I have attended 2 movies at this theatre. They have scrumptious food and drinks. Best of all is their seating and viewing comfort. I have health issues where I find difficulty with crowds and the small intimate setting and convent parking garage made it a treat!

Alamo is fun especially for a night out with friends but Violet Crown is perfect for a date. Parking is easy, Food is fantastic. And they will fight for the great small films that I love to see on a bigger screen. After the show, its great to walk around 2nd street and see the ambiance of the lower downtown scene. Can't say enough good things about this place. This is Austin's best cinema.

I liked the idea of preordering your tickets and seats from their website, as well as the complimentary valet or self-parking--particularly since I hit traffic on the way downtown and the movie had already started. The seats were very comfortable and I liked the eclectic variety of movies they offer. Can't comment on the food or drink, maybe I'll try that next time. Enjoyed my time there, will definitely be back!

Loved the spartan elegance. None of the personality-plus servers, punny movie posters or hilarious shorts that make the Alamo Draft House an event. The Violet Crown serves good food, offers free refills on the popcorn and lets you reserve a seat. The decore is simple and understated. What you notice in the end is the movie. Nicely done.

This theater is the TITS! Yah yah it's an extra $2 for a ticket but totalllllly worth it. The seats are roomy and comfortable and cushioned (usually I spend a good 30 minutes of a movie shifting around because they are so uncomfortable in other theaters). The screen is really crisp and the graphics are great, also better than any regular movie theater I've been to. Parking is free in the garage if you get the ticket validated. There is also more leg room so you don't have to do the Dane Cook shuffle if you have to leave the theater for some reason. I can't wait to come back!

Great atmosphere, and a great selection of foreign and art house films. I came here to see the new Juliette Binoche film "Certified Copy". I enjoyed my experience so much that I came back the next day to see another film, in spite of only having 3 days to spend in Austin. The drinks and snacks are top-notch. I had never before in my life had a "cake ball", but with flavors like coconut curry, chocolate chipotle, and strawberry-lemon-basil, I just had to give them to try. They were delicious, and the perfect little bite-sized bonbon for a movie snack. I also can't argue with a movie theatre that serves Sazeracs and Caipirinhas! I will seek out this venue from now on every time I come to Austin.

I recently went to Violet Crown Cinema and I was very pleased! The place was easy to find in downtown Austin and it could have not possibly been more convenient! From the very beginning of my experience when I purchased the tickets online and chose the seats (reserved seating) through an iPhone app! Then when you get there the parking is in the same building! AND THEY VALIDATE YOUR PARKING TICKET!!! You can get beer, cocktails, sodas, food, popcorn, etc... The waiting area actually looks like a lounge. The seats in the theater are not the most comfortable but there's plenty of leg-room and a little table for you to put your food. I also like the fact that they show more international independent films. All in all, thumbs up!

This is how movies should be experienced. Elegant, comfortable, great menu and attentive staff. Not at all a competitor of Alamo-- love those guys to death. This is a different experience altogether though. Clean, classic, wonderful.

Love choosing my own seat from the comfort of my home!! No waiting in line like Drafthouse....and love the ottomans in the front row. I can actually eat with my food in front of my face, and not a foot away at a bar, very nice!! Pd parking, what more can you ask for??

I can't say enough good things about this place. I held out for a while, thinking it was some yuppie, upscale place in the hip district. It was exactly the opposite. Laid-back, super-friendly staff, cozy theaters, good food and drink selection. The theaters are intimate without feeling cramped. The lounge area is super-chill and everyone (bartender, snack bar attendants, ushers) was very friendly and helpful. Some yelpsters have complained about the food/tray table situation but my suggestion is to go early and sit in the lounge and eat and then go watch the film. I'm one of the seemingly few people who does not enjoy the Alamo Drafthouse experience. I don't care for the distraction of waiters and people eating something other than "movie food". VC is a much better experience if your goal is to actually "watch" a film. As a consequence they attract a clientele that is more mature and reverent than your typical moviegoer. This will be my theater of choice from here on out.

Welcome to Austin, Violet Crown! It's so refreshing to have an artistic, high-end theatre downtown. They are committed to showing smaller, more intelligent films, foreign films and indie films. It's great being able to pick out your exact seat and recline in their comfy chairs, with clear viewing lines, no chance of some big guy in front of you blocking you for the whole movie. I'm amazed by how quiet the auditoriums are, and the how other patrons respect the no talking or texting rule. I guess it's a combination of the atmosphere they set, plus the types of movie-goers that would come to see these type of films. Also the lobby is gorgeous! They have big windows to look out, a lounge to relax before or after the film. Plus the have a good selection of beer on tap. I can honestly see just hanging out in the lounge, whether I'm seeing a movie or not!

Violet Crown is pretty good movie going experience.. It probably isn't going to replace Alamo for most Alamo fans, but for me, Violet Crown was a refreshing change of pace. The space is tucked in above a tapas bar and at least for me, a little hard to find at first, but the parking is free in the attached AMLI garage which is a nice perk. The theater seats are incredibly comfortable and I don't think its possible for there to be a bad seat. The food that we ordered (and ate in the lobby beforehand) was maybe a little pricey, but very good. The snackbar is a bit of a joke ($6 for a brown lunch bag size of stale popcorn, just regular old candy bars for $5). They should maybe pay more attention to that and either offer something more unique that's in line with the rest of the place or dump it all together. Other than that, it was SO nice to be able to buy a ticket ahead of time and have your seat reserved; not fight for parking and be asked to move seats to accomodate larger parties even though you paid for "reserved seating" (cough cough Alamo cough cough). Would definitely come here again.

Do not go see Amour at Violet Crown. They are showing Zero Dark Thirty in the theatre next to it. We heard every grenade and machine gun. Ruined Amour. Also loud Les Mis on the other side.

What a pain. Reserved seats, tiny theaters, crowded and expensive. Why?

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful evening at the Violet Crown this weekend. "This is how to watch a movie!" was her comment. The location, food, drinks and atmosphere are great. The place has a truly "Austin" feel to it. After the movie, we also enjoyed strolling the streets of Austin just people watching. Highly recommend.

I've been to the Violet Crown twice now - once on May 4th and once on May 18th. Both experiences have been fantastic! I LOVE that you can choose your seats online and purchase them knowing exactly where you'll be sitting! I LOVE only having to arrive 5 minutes before the performance for seating, and that the trailers only last a few minutes. I LOVE having the option to purchase food and wine to accompany the movie. The food is good but overpriced, but I didn't mind so much I was starving and could eat a good dinner while watching the movie. I LOVE that the theater is brand new and pristine - it's so clean and the aisles are wide enough to enter and exit without folks who are already seated feeling like they have to stand up to let you through. The seats are a grey leather/vinyl and very comfy, and the flip out tables (like at a lecture hall or front row of an airplane) can be brought out just when you need them. I don't mind not having wait staff coming and going during the movie. We simply ordered what we wanted before the movie, and then were able to enjoy the movie without interruption. And the fact that this theater shows independent/foreign/documentary films - BRAVO! Two really wonderful experiences all the way around, and we're definitely going back for more AND recommending it to everyone we know! Regarding wine - I had a glass of the Thomas Henry Pinot Noir 2009 - you can see my review of it here: sassywinebelly.blogspot.…

Ok, my wife and I went to this place last night with high hopes, and were quite disappointed. I'm not sure what everybody is raving about. Here is a list of objective facts about the place, to show you I'm not just being a negative ninny: 1.) the website didn't allow me to purchase tickets. After I clicked Buy Tickets and then the showtime, it took me to a subtotal page where the only clickable link was "Cancel Order." Seriously. So I called them and asked if I could buy a ticket over the phone, and the lady said, oh, um, we don't usually do that, but if you can wait a few minutes I'll get a pen and paper and you can reserve a seat that way. I waited, she came back, and then she would only let me reserve the tickets, but not buy them, telling me a 4-digit code to memorize and repeat whenst we arrived before the movie to buy tickets. Okay, I thought, this is a little weird, but I'm going to cut them some slack; it wouldn't be the first time someone was having trouble with their ecommerce website. 2.) The parking garage sucks. Yes, it is free with validation, but the spaces are ridiculously tiny, and there are like 30 of them. 3.) The lobby has a promising-looking air of understated class - with its trendy concrete floors and horizontal wood paneling on the walls - but my wife had to wait in line for a long time to buy tickets. Also behind the ticket-purchase counter were two people: one man selling tickets and one woman answering phone calls, which seems extraordinarily rude and creates the impression, like it or not, that you're ignoring your customers. Why wasn't she in an office somewhere, instead of teasing all line-standers with the possibility that she might in some way help them stop standing in line? 4.) You can order food and drink and enjoy it in the cafe, or you can skip the food and drink and go right into the theater and watch the movie, like at a normal theater. OR, you can order food and drink, go into the theater, then a buzzy little coaster beeper can startle you when the food's ready, now that you're settled into your theater seats. 5.) The theater seats. They are like bucket seats in an economy sports car. Not only are they rigid and upholstered in unbreatheable LEATHER so that your butt starts to sweat immediately (exacerbated by the weak Air Conditioning in there), but they are not very big or comfortable! Um, I thought part of the $14/per person ticket price was big, comfortable seats. The lady on the phone definitely told me they were both big and comfortable, and they were neither. When I went out to the lobby to get my food, I asked if someone could crank down the air conditioning, because my entire backside was uncomfortably moist. 6.) The theater seats. There is no room to walk in there. You have to put one foot directly in front of the other and shuffle slowly in order not to bump into people's legs, which, again - I thought my $14 paid for more space than that. 7.) The theater seats. This one's more about the integration of supposedly gourmet food and drink with the theatergoing experience. So, if you get to the Violet Crown Theater 20 mins before the movie starts, you're kind of screwed, if you're hungry. Because there's not enough time to eat comfortably in the cafe, and you CERTAINLY cannot have a comfortable eating experience in that theater. The seats have little, tiny collapsing tables like when you're in the bulkhead row of an airplane, which BARELY allow you room for one plate of food and a pint glass of beer. You have to keep both hands on either item at all times so they don't slip off. After our beeper went off and I carefully shuffled out of the theater - trying desperately not to step on everyone's toes in the millimeters of space between my legs and theirs - I had to even more carefully shuffle BACK IN, but this time balancing a plastic tray with two heavy ceramic, slipping plates on it. In the dark. Fun! 8.) The food. Not that great. The margherita pizza was bland, the pulled pork slider - which was not a slider but the size of a sub sandwich - was on a generic-tasting bun and the meat was dry. The beers were good and fresh-tasting, but it's kind of hard to screw those up. 9.) The theater seats! When I called to reserve seats they didn't tell me anything about the fact that there was a row of barcaloungers with cupholders at the front of the theater, and 5 more rows of hard little leather car seats. I would have MUCH rather sat in the gigantic first class seats, and in fact was expecting ALL the seats to be like that, from the description I got over the phone. Very disappointing. 10.) I will say the sound and image were top notch, but aside from the fact that the theater's size was more akin to a screening room than a movie theater, the experience of watching a movie in that space did not feel first class, or even above-average, which again, the high ticket price had led me to believe it would be.

I'll admit I don't got to the movies that often. I love saving the money and watching Netflix at home. That being said, this place may change that. We went to a screening of, Where Soldiers come from, last night and I fell in love with both the movie and the theater. I loved reserving seats on line when you buy tickets. No need to arrive and hour before for a good seat. Free valet parking, OK $5 with tip, but still pretty much a deal downtown plus you have someone opening the door for you. We didn't try food but probably will next time a something smelled really good. The bar is classy, the staff was great and the house wine was great. My husband was very fond of his bottomless popcorn. The seats are comfy and recline. I left here thinking, Alamo, what Alamo. There's a new favorite in town for me.

Yay for Dublin Dr. Pepper! Great movie date night at the Violet Crown. Comfy seats, great image and sound. Wish they had a bit more selection for food and munchies, but that's just a personal preference. Love the selection of sodas, great service in purchasing tickets and finding out seats.

I think I am in love with Violet Crown. I will still go to the Alamo, but many of the less than perfect issues with the Alamo are corrected here. For anyone who may seem apprehensive after reading Paul A's review I will clear some things up from my experience. 1. I will definitely recommend buying tickets online. The website is super easy to use and since every seat is reserved you get to choose where your seat is ahead of time, so no more getting to the theater an hour early and being corralled until you get to race in and choose from what's left. 2. They validate parking for up to 4 hours and even offer free Valet for those who don't want to circle around for a spot in the garage. Who offers FREE VALET, DOWNTOWN on the WEEKEND? Awesome. If per chance you are a self-parker like me, the spots are normal size and as available as you would expect in a garage downtown. 3. The lobby is fantastic. Because most people already have tickets and may just need to check in there are not many people working the front counter, but again no long lines is a good thing for me. The girl at the front was super nice and even remembered to ask if I needed to be validated when I forgot. 4. There is a very comfy bar and lounge area with happy hour specials and appetizers. @ Paul: I have no idea why you would go into the theater to wait for your food when your seat is already reserved and the lounge is so nice. It does explain on the website, that unlike the Alamo you do not order inside the theater, you need to arrive early to get food and drink, and may then bring it in with you. This is not dinner, this is an appetizer. 5. They have the MOST COMFORTABLE seats that I have seen in a movie theater, and that is usually my biggest complaint about going out for a movie (except for noisy kids and commercials of which they have neither). That said, I do agree that the lack of cup holders and slightly awkward fold-up table could be improved, but it is better than leaning up to the bar counter at the Alamo. 6. There is as much room to walk past people as any other theater, but there is way better visibility than any other theater. Each row is much higher that the one before it, so there is never a head blocking the subtitles. There are also less seats so it is quieter. They even have an usher to help you find the seat you reserved. and finally, the tickets are not $14, they are $9 for an early show, $11 for a weeknight, and $13 for a weekend. Well worth the price for an easy, comfortable, and overall great experience. So take that Paul.

Oh man! I love Violet Crown Cinema!! I love the small theaters and the comfy chairs. I love the bar and all it's glory. And I especially love the unique sodas at the self serve soda fountain. This place makes me happy and proud to live in Austin. I haven't tried the food, but that is next on my list of Violet Crown visits. Oh and assigned seating? A +++ in my opinion.

I really wanted to love this place as I love the concept, however that was not how it worked out. Please note I have given them three chances to win my love, but its not happening. Where to begin... I do love the atmosphere and theater seating as its comfortable and even tall people in front of you don't ruin the movie and I do like that you can reserve your seat! I like their selection of films. Sadly those are the only positives your going to see in this review. The waiter in the bar was terrible, extremely slow, uninformed, and totally clueless. We came an hour early for the film to check the place out and test drive the bar. It took over 30 minutes to get a beer and one cocktail. Bear in mind we were one of 3 tables in the bar and nobody was seated at the bar. This is ridiculous to say the least. We paid him when he delivered the drinks and we still almost missed the start of our film while waiting for the waiter to bring us change. Or maybe he was hopeful of getting a $7 tip on $13 worth of drinks?! Either way it was not good. On to the food, the menu appears inspired however it bears little resemblance to what you actually receive. We ordered the Spring-rolls with Hosin Peanut sauce and the Pulled Pork appetizers. The Spring-rolls were very bland, gummy and tasteless, the so called peanut sauce tasted like dishwater (and had the same consistency YUCK!!) with a spoonful of peanut-butter and not a trace of Hosin sauce anywhere! The pulled pork had no flavor it was reminiscent of the tasteless chicken you might have gotten in your grade-school cafeteria, The bread was soggy and I did not see or taste any ginger or spice of any kind. There was about a teaspoon of sauce for the 6 slices which was not sufficient. Again the waiter was working at a glacial pace. A freaking sloth moves faster than this guy. I am not being ugly about the service as I worked in the service industry in college and I know what it takes to do this job well and their wait staff is sadly lacking. So the verdict is three strikes and you are out. While I admire the concept, they have not managed to pull it off. Save your time and money and go elsewhere. I am sticking to the Alamo on South Lamar as they are consistently great and local!

Hands down best place to see a movie in Austin. Preorder your tickets, show up 5 minutes before the show, enjoy your movie in a very comfortable, clean seat. The food here is good too, although I've only had a couple of things. I really come for the ease of the experience and avoiding having to wait in line.

Best movie experience I have ever had for the money.. I love this place. I watched "The Trip" after parking in the garage that is connected to the movie theater. Parking if free as they validate your ticket. I was 30 minutes early and went to the bar / restaurant and ordered food. I tried the Pork Tapas and it was delightful.. Very, very tasty for about $8. They also have other good food choices other than popcorn, etc. I also ordered a glass of house red wine and they let me take it into the theater. They have very comfortable seats in the first row and since there were no handicapped persons attending I got to sit there.. It was like sitting in my living room with a comfy foot stool and everything. I like Alamo, but I can't stand getting interrupted by the waiter during the movie. This place leaves you alone, you get your own food and drink. Overall, this place has everything! Good food, alcohol, comfy seats AND interesting movies.. A must go.

Still loving the theatre but will share a story from my second visit. I approached the bar before the showtime was called to be seated, money out, patiently waiting my turn. I was standing between a middle aged couple who had just been served their drinks and a younger couple who was in the process of being helped who had been ahead of me. While the bartender was busy with the younger couple, another bartender came over. I thought he was there to help me out but instead approached the older couple, They had an addition to their order. Fine. He was polite and attentive and I was excited about being next and finally getting my beer. He cashed them out and walked away. Not a first or second look at me. When I called out with a non-rude-benefit-of-the-doubt, "excuse me", he turned to me and gave an annoyed, "Yeah?" I asked if I could please have a something IPA (I forget) and got another, "yeah", as if he couldn't be bothered. No smile, no ah, sorry. Just a bad attitude. I hate that I still tipped him. ARGH! What is wrong with me!? Anyway, they get a big thumbs down for my second visit. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO on you rude (and probably a little sterotype-y) bartender. FOR SHAME!!!!!!!!!!! I will still be back but will send my white husband to get our drinks next time.

Violet Crown is lovely. It is what I would call a luxury movie theater. While the ticket prices are the highest that I've ever paid, it's worth it. The decor is a visual treat, and I absolutely love it that they have old black and white movies projected onto the wall (with no sound) in the cafe/bar area. The theaters themselves are small and intimate, with maybe 40 seats. When you buy your tickets, you get to choose your seat. It fills up fast, so you should try to get your tickets as early as possible. The theaters are NICE and clean, and definitely lacking the typical "sticky floor" feel that most theaters have. They also have a little coffee shop and a little cafe and bar. The food selection is limited but good. They also have a pretty decent cocktail list. A lot of Austinites might find this place to be a little too swanky and lacking the rock'n'roll vibe that's prevalent in Austin. If you like the atmosphere of the posh shops and restaurants in the 2nd Street area, though, you will not be disappointed by Violet Crown.

I have been to Violet Crown twice now and both times I found the staff to be very unfriendly, bordering on rude. In particular, the bartender with the hipster mustache, who was rude both times that I visited. After waiting patiently at the bar for some time with no one else in front of me, we finally had to get his attention and ask if we could order. He seemed annoyed. Also, why are there two girls working the ticket counter, with two computers, if only one of them is going to assist customers while the other just stands there with a blank look? Do yourself a favor and go to the Alamo Drafthouse instead.

I was initially ambivalent about attending the Violet Crown's soft opening on 4/27/2011 because I wondered, how could anything surpass the Alamo? Since going to the Crown, I can tell you that still nothing beats the Alamo! Let's start with the ticket prices, $13 each. Although I can see Truffaut's 400 Blows on Netflix, (DVD and Blu-Ray!) I thought it might be exciting to see it in a swank new theatre and support the Austin Film Society. Prices steep, but I was excited to try it out. Let's move onto the advertised "Parking Validated in the Amli". The Amli fills up! Don't expect it! Plan to ride the bus if you really don't want to pay. It's okay, though, it's a swank-o place, expect to spend a night out. Just make sure your expectations are in order. Maybe the next piece of bad news we can chalk up to inexperience. After arriving for the film, I got a medium sized popcorn (a reasonable size to be fair, and the only size available), a Topo Chico and a Jarritos soda. I must have been charged the price for the unlimited soda refills ($4) for the bottled sodas, because before I knew what was happening, I had paid $14 for 24 oz of drinks and 8-10 oz of popcorn. The popcorn is (of course) refillable, but as mentioned in another review, really too salty for anyone (even if sharing) to finish their first bag! Perhaps the new staff behind the counter didn't know how to ring the drinks? Perhaps they really do charge you $4 for a topo chico? At that rate, I recommend you get the bottomless high-fructose corn syrup stuff; at least you won't be dying of thirst when your Blu-Ray disc craps out. Did I ruin the surprise ending? I experienced the same anti-climactics as in the aforementioned review. The DVD stopped at the crucial point in the narrative, and it took ten minutes for someone to assure us they were working on GETTING THE DISC RUNNING AGAIN. It just seemed to be finding the remote! Wait, they actually put us on the wrong chapter at first-- thank goodness we were close enough to the ending that it wasn't ruined in its entirety. The previous reviewer was generous enough to chalk it up to soft opening/inexperience/AFS. I am unable to let Violet Crown off the hook. They advertised that they're creating a one-of-a-kind unforgettable film experience. Sure, I'll buy that. I even paid for it! But was it delivered? Not up to my standards. The building is nice, but that it is because it is new. The finishes are fine, but kind of warehouse-y; poured concrete floors but not polished and I think the minimalist look works better with actual warehouse renovations. It is obvious that the air conditioning hasn't been calibrated to deal with occupants. These are all small quibbles, but what they add up to is not a "one-of-a-kind unforgettable film experience". What quality theatre can't get the salt right on the popcorn? What quality theatre lets patrons sit angry for ten minutes of technical difficulties without even an apology? To advertise and charge for quality is one thing; to deliver it entirely another. Violet Crown was quite frankly a disappointment when one compares initial expectations with the actual experience.

This theatre was pretty cool, and will be really cool after they surpass their soft opening and figure it all out., but a great addition to Austin. Great location right next to Moody Theatre on 2nd st., free parking in garage, which is a beautiful thing in Austin. Sweet bar and lounge area. It had a kind of "ship" feeling with the horizontal teak(ish) wood adorning the walls and porthole-esque mirrors along the wall. This is what I envision anyway, probably totally crazy. Since I'm from the ocean it seemed nice. They have a full bar, movie snacks, (popcorn had way too much salt on it if any from Violet is reading this!) and I think some bar hot food as well, but we didn't order. But you can bring your Real Ale or Live Oak brews (on tap) into the theatre, order two, because I couldn't escape. There's only one staircase (in my theatre). Seats are very comfortable (until the fat guys break them in), a first class tray pulls out from the armrest. Very intimate theatre seating, small (40-50 seats?), but super cozy. Although it was about 55 degrees in there. Bring bearskin. They are screening DVD and not film, and if that's supposed to help picture quality, something went wrong because every 15 minutes there would be a hiccup in transmission and the picture would go bonkers for a bit. Definitely go support indie film at the Violet Crown!

Violet Crown Cinema provides the best all-around cinematic experience in the Austin area. The location is prime and lends options to before or after movie plans. Parking is never a problem and is validated for 4 hours. The online seat reservation process is simple and allows a party of people to be guaranteed a seat together beforehand. If you happen to get stuck with a front row seat no need to fret because they're recliner seats that help provide an even more cozy experience. Regardless of where you choose to sit, there isn't a bad seat in the house. If you decide to get to the cinema early and lounge, the bar and cafe menu are fantastic. Both seating areas are of the modern decor with dark wood, exposed concrete ceilings, and violet accent lighting. The bar provides a great on-tap list if you're a craft beer enthusiast as well as an impressive list of cocktails and wine . The food quality was exceptional and my service was quite fast. You're also given the option of taking food and/or drinks into the theater. The film selection and events hosted at the Violet Crown also set this theater apart from most theaters. By far the most impressive thing about the Violet Crown is the customer service. I had a minor issue and Mark Stowe went above and beyond to make the situation right. How he handled the situation inspired this review and has earned my utmost respect and loyalty to the Violet Crown. While some may say the prices are a little expensive, it's fairly justified by the overall experience. I will without a doubt be advocating for this theater and be returning frequently. If you're looking for the best movie experience in town, Violet Crown without a doubt is THE place to go.

I was excited to go to Violet Crown. I thought it would be an upscale Alamo. It's not. You can take food and drinks into the theater, but they don't serve in the theater. That means you have to get there to have dinner first and if I'm going downtown to have dinner, I can find much better restaurants to go to before the movie. The food is average. The variety is slim--hotdogs or pizza. They try to make them sound gourmet, but my pizza tasted like a frozen pizza. If you are not through eating and want to take your food into the theater you can, which is nice--but very uncomfortable! The pull down school desk table is a challenge to get into and set up when you're holding a drink and a plate of food. And once you're done, your dishes stay there. I didn't find those seats to be comfortable at all. I couldn't relax because I was so afraid of breaking my drink glass. I also don't like that they don't serve drinks inside. That means you either have to leave the theater, interrupt your neighbors and miss part of the movie. OR, as the server recommended, take 2 drinks into the theater at the start, making the pull down table and the drinks even more difficult to manage. I'd go catch a movie there again--same as I'd go to one of the Regal theater. But I wouldn't eat dinner there. I will say the cocktails were great. But so are the ones at La Condesa down the street. Free parking downtown is nice, but when the movie is over the garage is crammed and you wait in "traffic" to get out of there. I'm not impressed.

Rude, condescending treatment during SXSW. Not only was this a terrible venue (too far, too few seats), the guy gave me a hard time about finishing my coffee in the lobby while waiting to see if I would be able to get in to the film. I had every intention of pitching it before I went into their Alamo wanna-be theater. There are thousands of people in town for SXSW. Way to show your Austin hospitality, hipster.

Nine dollars seems a bit steep for a matinee, and I agree it lacks the local charm of the Alamo. Violet Crown is very clean, new and set up for an older (or Yuppie) crowd with a full bar. My girlfriend and I went to see the 5 p.m. showing of Midnight in Paris on June 22nd. The first few minutes were missed by the entire audience due to a video SNAFU. It's a boutique movie house that fits in Austin's 2nd St./Warehouse District new look. Violet Crown is not easy to find on the street. Alamo has a much easier vibe. Buyer beware!

Great theater, awesome location. Parking a little hard to figure out for a first timer. Snacks pretty good and varied, but to my astonishment served in ... styrofoam. With the hip crowd they are catering to, this is quite a turn-off. Will go there again, but won't be ordering food.

Changing my previous 4 to a 5. Violet Crown responded to me immediately regarding talking in the theater. They do have a policy, they said if people are bothering you to let a manager know and they will take care of it, so thank you Violet Crown! My new favorite theater. Dear Violet Crown, Love your cushy leather seats and leg room. Love your small theater size. Love that I can reserve seats online and don't have to show up 30 minutes early and feel obligated to order crappy food. Love your cute little school desk tables. Love your location. BUT you must institute a no talking/testing policy. Most people in the theater were properly silent but movie was ruined by the nonstop chatter of 2 ladies in front of us. They had no response to my shushing:) Seriously people if you want to comment on the entire movie stay home and wait for it to come out on Netflix. Couldn't the nice usher who tells us where to sit also monitor the movie and tell people to be quiet or go home? There should at least be an announcement. I would check the good for kids box below but it depends....are your kids well behaved??

I love this place! The film selections - foreign and art - are refreshing and the entire experience is inspiring. Full bar, decent wine selection, and appetizers with some gluten-free options. I wouldn't try to eat a meal here but you can easily find a snack to tide you over so you can enjoy one of the many nearby restaurant options after the show. Since we started coming here about 2 months ago we've made this a regular destination.

Wonderful addition to Austin! Theatres are small and comfortable. The lounge, the look and feel of the space, and the crowd all reminded me of a more upscale Film Forum or Angelika. Perfect place to watch Woody Allen's latest. We'll be coming back.

This is a great place for grown-ups to see a movie. The seats are comfy and the rows have plenty of room for your legs and people to walk by. I like the reserved seat concept and the fact that you bring your food in yourself. Not having the servers inside the theater asking you to pay just at the best part is a big plus. The food is good and they validate parking.

Went to the cinema on opening night and must say that is was a pleasant experience! I'm excited to have an art house cinema in town! The food was yummy! We shared the margherita pizza and shared the cheese plate. I had a glass of wine from a decent wine list. I was bummed about the fact that there's no wait service in the theaters. Otherwise, I loved it!

A few minor things kept me from posting 5 stars. Three friends and I had a great experience and I'll tell you how. First go to the website ( thevioletcrown.com ) because it's THE way to buy tickets. You choose your own seats. If you procrastinate or have a large party you might point to this as a problem but it was really nice for us four not to worry about getting into the theater as soon as the began seating. BTW there are only 30-40 seats per theater so make your order ASAP. Second, if you want food, get there early! Their menu recommends ordering at least 15 minutes before showtime. This isn't the Alamo and no one is bringing you your food and drinks. You get a buzzer and more than a few people had to leave the movie to go grab their order. The bar and cafe are very nice and comfortable. The drinks and food were tasty. The only problem is that they get slammed right before the movie. Despite that, once we got our orders in the food was ready pretty quickly. My friends all got the mediteranian plate while I ordered the spring rolls (the also have hot dogs, pizzas and other more standard fare). The only complaint we had was that my rolls weren't rolled very well. You are welcome to take your food and drinks into the movie and they have airline style fold-away tables. I actually wish the Alamo would switch to these. Finally, this isn't the cheapest theater but the ambiance is what you're paying for. If the Alamo is a beer bar with pub grub, think of the Violet Crown as a martini bar with cheese plates. In recap, early bird gets the worm. It's not a cheap worm but it is delicious.

My husband and I made pre-birthday plans for my 28th to go to Violet Crown. But after a long work day he went on a bike ride and forgot!! Half way around town lake he called me frantic since we had 15 minutes before the movie started so we decided to just meet there. I show up and he's there with no bike lock! This could've been a huge pain and ruined our movie plans but when he spoke to Jordan (at Violet Crown) he explained the situation and she gladly helped him put it in the back to store it during the movie. Now, I am sure this is not a usual thing and I wouldn't expect Violet Crown to do this normally but it was incredibly nice and hospitable of her to help us out! We sat down just in time for the movie to start and had a great time! I felt like I needed to share this,as so many occasions I feel like customer service is not a good as it could be "these days" but Jordan exceeded my expectations on good customer service. Thank you and we will be coming back! ( next time without a bike!)

Went to see Cave of Forgotten Dreams yesterday and noticed that the stair lights have now been shielded! Thank You Violet Crown! Not only that, but I have to applaud the professionalism and efficiency of the staff. When it was discovered that my reserved seats (along with several others) were inhabited by patrons who had inadvertently reserved seats for the prior day, the situation was handled with such polite efficiency by the guy with the cool pompadour that the musical chairs process was smooth as silk. Oh, and Mrs. Meyers hand soap in the men's room?! What could be more perfect? I LOVE this place!

I'm sure lots of other folks will talk about the films, seats, and food. They're all good to great; I'd like to talk about the urinals. Specifically, the urinals as an indication that these folks thought about the details when putting this place together. As any man will attest, there is an unwritten rule to use the urinal furthest away from any other guy already using one. This often results either in having to use the really low handicapped-accessible one on the other end or awkwardly trying to assess how much longer the other guy has to go to see if you can pass the time until he's done doing something at the sink before you can use any other urinal. You see, the handicapped ones are so low as to cause unfortunate splashing, leading to even more weirdness surrounding the question of whether to wipe off your leg with a paper towel afterward. So, a row of three urinals, with the handicapped-accessible one at one end (which is very common) and a dude at the other end presents a real conundrum involving the age of the other guy and some estimation of his bladder health, whether or not he could be concealing his progress by aiming at the sloped side instead of the water, your own issues with some stranger you'll never see again thinking you're vain for spending time at the mirror without really doing anything, concern over said dude wondering why the $!*#(& you chose the urinal right next to him if you do, possible stage fright (*especially* if he has it, too), the placement of the mirror in relation to the row of urinals, whether you're wearing shorts or pants (and what color & material the pants are), whether or not this particular handicapped urinal is one of the apparently non-tested ones that splashes, and the likelihood of being alone in the bathroom when you're done so you can wipe off your leg in case it was. It's mentally exhausting. The Violet Crown Cinema, I was delighted to see, placed the handicapped-accessible urinal in the MIDDLE. Brilliant. It's there if you need it, and it's not causing emotional distress and wasting paper towels all the rest of the time. Thank you.

Wow. Everything is just about perfect. A great theater for an adult crowd. The reserve seating makes the movie going so much more enjoyable because you don't have to worry about the fan boys showing up an hour before the movie in order to get a couple of seats together, like a certain theater chain that will go unnamed (which I love too, but it is a different experience for a different type of movie). The food is super tasty (cake balls, popcorn, pork tapas, french fries and prosciutto pizza). The drinks were great as well (moscow mule and ginger capirinhia).

This place is amazing! I've lived in Austin all my life and I'm a huge fan of the Alamo. When I first read about this theater I initially thought there was no way in hell they could even come close the Drafthouse, after one visit though, I am absolutely sold! This theater is such a uniquely different experience from the Alamo. I highly recommend this place to everyone I can.

Great experience! Online ticket reservation was quick and easy. I do love the fact that you can reserve the seats that you want. Picture was clear and sound was not too loud or too low. The seats are comfortable and roomy. What can I say, it was much better than any large theater at the same cost.

Recently went to a Saturday evening showing at the Violet Crown. Although the film itself (Certified Copy) was lovely, the theatergoing experience left much to be desired. Upon arriving I found that, because I had bought some of my tickets at separate times my family would be required to be seated apart for mother's day. The hostess referred me to the usher to resolve the situation and the usher merely referred me back to the hostess. Neither were particularly attentive. I was informed that the capacity to choose seats was available on their website, yet no such capacity was in evidence when I originally bought the tickets. Nor was it evident, at the time, that the seats were reserved in advance and that we could not choose our places. I understand that the website has been recently updated but that was no help to me then. On a more minor note, the printed out tickets advertised free popcorn yet none was being given out on the night of our movie with only the excuse that they meant us to understand (by telepathy perhaps) that the free popcorn only applied to the opening weekend. This is not only inconsiderate customer service, it is false advertising, and as such flatly and clearly illegal. The Violet Crown offers a new and exciting type of cinema for Austin, a highbrow counterpart to our beloved Alamo Drafthouse chain. However, if they ever wish to attain the beloved status and near obsessive following of the aforementioned chain they must follow the example set by the Drafthouse and other beloved Austin staples. Friendliness, considerateness and the eager effort to do everything you can to serve the business, the customer and the art are key.

The Violet Crown has provided us with one of the best cinematic experiences we have ever had. The place is quaint, stylish, clean and very comfortable. The first row is heaven. The food has improved greatly and we are now fans of their pizza. We love that they sell local sodas with real cane sugar and offer free refills . If you are in search of a great cinematic experience, this is the place to go.

Loved this theatre! Went there for the first time to see "Senna" the documentary about the Formula 1 race car driver. The documentary was great but the cinema was a treat! They have 4 theatres , our held 50 people so it gives you an intimate feel. They have a full bar and a nice selections of food beautifully served.Pita chips with hummus, gelato ,pizza etc all freshly mad in their kitchen. I sat in very comfortable seats with my gelato enjoying the movie. I hade never been there before but am glad I discovered it!

WOW! What an unexpected surprise! Originally we had planned to go to the draft house of S. Lamar, but our show was sold out and would have to wait 2 hrs. for the next one. So we decided to go to a theatre nearby and found 'violet crown cinema.' For starters, it was on W. 2nd st. which was lit up with christmas lights and an awesome view of the city. We then decided to splurge and do valet parking....turns out that it's free when you ask the theatre to validate your valet card. FREE VALET PARKING! So we walked to the theatre and took the elevator up to the theatre and took a moment to enjoy the second story view over the beautifully lit street before we entered a very nice cinema lobby. There was a restaurant and a bar and seating areas next to big glass windows overlooking the street. What I liked about this place was A.) assigned seating (you pick your seats when you buy your tickets) B.) They usher you in 5 mins prio to the movie C.)You can get food and drinks outside and take them in with you, but they don't do orders inside the theatre (which I love, it gets to be too distracting dealing with that stuff during a movie.) The sound quality was excellent. I mean, i saw "the descendants" so it wasn't a big action packed movie, but I caught all of the dialogue at the quiet moments and what-not so.....I LOVED IT. This is my new theatre!. Always best to show up 35 mins before your movie so you can get seats together, and get food and drinks in the restaurant to take in with you.

I love Violet Crown! Here are some of the reasons: free valet parking, reserved seating, upscale atmosphere, excellent food, no annoying wait-staff during the movie, comfortable seating, and a subdued warning about talking/cell-phone use.

4 hours of free parking. Great indie movies with seat reservations - no more jerks taking up two seats in a full theater with single seats on either side during a full house. Considering new releases at bigger cinemas are $9 and up, it's worth the extra $4 for the comfort and convenience.

I have been to Violet Crown twice now. The first time I had no food or drink and loved it. Small space, great screen, comfortable seats. Love the fact you know you have seats in advance after many turn aways from Alamo. The second time we had food and drinks and this does not work well in my opinion. They say to arrive 30 minutes ahead of time, but the staff are slow and so when the food arrives you feel rushed. However, the food is not really good enough to go an hour ahead with so many better choices in the area. If you take the food in, you have to juggle, plate, drink glass, water glass etc to your seat and pull down the seat tray- which is awkward and stressful. Then the plates sit there for the whole show. We decided no more food, just drinks in future. The food side needs to be re-thought - perhaps trays? Great addition to Austin, though.

I love this place. I only frequent Alamo or Violet Crown for my cinematic experiences. I've decided there is no other way to go in Austin. Violet Crown is great for the following reasons: -The theaters are all cozy and there is not a bad seat in the house. -There's a full bar and a decently rounded food menu that satisfies meat eaters to vegans. The Mediterranean plate is the jam. Be warned though, there isn't service in the theatre like Alamo. Come early to eat or you can get one of those vibrating, lighty-up coaster thingies that alerts you when to pick up your order if your movie has already started. -The seats are super comfy and if you get to snag the seats in the front, you can lounge in a uber comfy chair with an ottoman to put those feet up on (without breaking your neck looking at the screen.) -You choose your seat upon purchase. I love to be able to reserve my own seat :) -The film options are mostly independent and somewhat guarantee that other movie goers are also serious about their cinematic experience. No children or crying babies disrupting anything. I could probably list more pros, but more importantly, I can't think of any cons. So there you have it.

I like coming here because they have a good selection of films that I want to see. Mostly it's arthouse/independent cinema. I don't have to drive all the way north to the Arbor Regal Cinema to see the films. I can come to downtown which is close to where I live. I know Alamo Drafthouse has a small selection of independent cinema but I end up spending more that I should to see a film. Here I can watch the film and not care about buying any food. They validate parking for 4 hours. When I was in line, I usually go up to the ticket booth but the person was on a call with a customer. The person at the concession stand said "I can help you". I thought to myself "I really don't want to buy any food. I ate a big breakfast with my crewmates. Are trying to make me buy food? I just want a ticket to see SHAME." Lo and behold I can buy a ticket at the concession stand. Also they announce when they are seating 5 minutes before the film starts. While you are finding your seat the trailers come on and you have to find your seat. I think they need to clearly mark the aisles so you can see in the dark. The seats are comfortable and there is premium seating in the front. I rather sit in B or C aisle so I can see the film straight on and not have to slightly look up. The lobby is small and when the afternoon sun comes down it becomes way too bright. They also have a cafe which I have yet to try out. The staff were very nice and professional.

The manager, Bill, contacted me to apologize about the parking garage issue. He offered movie passes to make up for it, even though the parking garage is a separate company. I fully intend to give Violet Crown another chance.

90+ Yelpers can't be wrong. Yessir, Violet Crown kicks ass. Everything about this place shows they thought pret-ty carefully about your moviegoing experience, and then made it several notches cooler. Thusly: VC regularly shows a bevy of indie films. Yes, they are downtown, sharing parking with an AMLI - but! surprisingly validate the $15 fee you'd otherwise swallow to park your coche in the AMLI's tower. Wow. If you purchase your ticket before you get to the theatre and print it at home, no need to 'pick up' your tickets at the theater before entering like at Alamo. Just take your ticket with you straight to your show, get your ticket taken, and sit. Handy if you're one of those last-second-arrival people. VC scale the ticket prices according to the popular theatergoing times, so even though they are downtown, they don't ask you to pay the same if you go at off peak times. i.e. First show $7; Matinees daily before 5pm, $9; Monday through Thursday: 5pm - close, $11; Weekends & Holidays - 5pm until close, $13. In addition to all this, VC has a full bar and foods which are pretty good (although if you're the Hungry Man type, you may not agree, portions were totally fine for me). Bonus: Dr. Pepper icees (?!) and non-dairy sorbetto! in addition to a variety of the usual movie candystuffs. You can bring all your foods and drinks into the theater, where they have fold out trays to put your consumables on, and they even put the condiments stand/free-soda refill station in the hall just outside the theaters in case you need something in the middle of your show. When your show's over, on the way out, lthere's a self-bussing station for recycling and disposing of your dirty silverware/plates off to the side. If there's anything I have to nitpick about this place, it's that unfortunately? for them, the iPic theatre up at the Domain raised the bar (heh) for Interior Design In An Area Where You May Linger Before Entering The Theatre. It's pretty great. You'll just have to trust me on that until I review iPic. Yes, they're way more expensive overall, and hardly ever show indie/foreign films, but that is where VC sticks it to 'em. Good work Violet Crown. You've given this Why Shouldn't I Stream This At Home? guy a new reason to see things on the silver screen.

This isn't some dinner-first, movie-second craptacular cinephile experience. Violet Crown is a fantastic theatre made all the better with a solid lounge and dinner menu. Hell of a gin selection to boot. My first choice in ATX!

Not as big or popular as Alamo Drafthouse, but they do everything better. Indie movies, INCREDIBLE drinks, delicious food that's actually worth the price, and better seats in smaller theatres. I saw Mud here, and loved it. Absolutely worth a try if you've enjoyed Drafthouse in any way. Hint hint: PERFECT date spot.

I've been here only twice, my 2nd visit being Saturday night (12/29) for Les Miserables. The theater is very clean and modern, and the cafe/dining area is very inviting. I tried the Big Bark Beer Brat with fries, which came with ketchup, mustard and lemon-garlic aiolo, and I asked for sriracha aioli on the side. Both aiolis are full of win, and the rest of the meal was good too. Eating in the theater proved a bit challenging, as the "tables" are like the fold up desks you would use in auditorium lectures in college. There is lots of leg room, but the seats are very close together so it can be awkward if you're seated next to strangers... Especially when eating a meal. I definitely think this concept is better executed at Alamo Drafthouse, although at VC I like the fact that there is no service in the theater. Servers running around during the movie does tend to get distracting. Ticket prices are a bit steep ($13), but theaters are small and intimate, and there is free parking in the attached garage... Which is a bonus if it's 40 degrees and cycling there doesn't seem desirable.

Great sound! The bass was smooth and crisp, with only a few notes that had variance and didn't quite punch through as the soundtrack intended - most likely the EQ setting. I like assigned seating too - no pressure to arrive early. Excellent programming - the Drafthouse ain't the only game in town anymore. Docking a star for the following... too expensive for the experience ($40 for 2 tickets, a beer, and a wine...meh). Bathroom needs work - I am rarely one to complain, but why the hell is the sink cold water only? Are they that cheap? There was also vomit on the floor this past Friday. I didn't check to see how fresh it was. Not a fan of the interior. Bare concrete would have been cool in 2006 but it looks played out now, like they were just too lazy to finish up. The lounge areas are nice, but it just looks like they selectively skimped on some basics here. Sweet chandelier-ish fixture bro. Validated parking is a good perk - although it will take you a good 5 minutes to walk to the theater if you don't park on the first level. From the things-that-worry-me-about-your-customer-service department - I get it, I should remember which credit card I bought the tickets with. This is why I texted myself the confirmation number. Is it really that hard to take patrons at face value when they say "[Last Name] for the 9:15 showing of [movie]"? Cripes, if somehow my tickets were being pirated by an unscrupulous online eavesdropper, they would know exactly where this nefarious ne'er do'weller was sitting so that the proper authorities could arrest them for wire fraud! Yegads!

The Violet Crown is perhaps the best place to view movies in Austin. Aside from some patrons who don't know when to turn their phones off -- the experience I had was really worth it! The food could use a little makeover, but I liked the beer selection, and the bathrooms were really clean. They get a bonus star for offering free parking to their customers!

Yay: Cozy seats, free of disturbances, good drinks, & real butter on the popcorn! Nay: the little table/arm rests are not big enough for a meal & tickets are a bit pricey.

This is where I'll go for indie movies over the Arbor cinema, but I'll still choose the Alamo Drafthouse if the movie I want to see is playing there. Pros: - Super comfortable seats! - You can pick your seat when you order your ticket online! It was nice to arrive and go into the theater five minutes before show time without worrying about seats. - Validated parking in the parking garage! - Interesting concession choices. This is the only place I've seen Cheerwine outside of the southeast. Cons: - Like Gold Class/iPic, it feels like another city when you walk in. I like living in Austin and want to feel like I'm in Austin (like I do when I'm at the Drafthouse). - Expensive and limited concession choices. My friend paid $5 for an ICEE. - And the biggest con that keeps me loyal to the Alamo Drafthouse: lack of a no talking/texting policy. I didn't pay $13 for a ticket to listen to the lady next to me narrate what she thought was going on during Midnight in Paris nor to get distracted by the grown adults around me who couldn't keep their smart phones dark during the movie.

WARNING: This place can be dangerous!!! Here is what happened while watching waiting for Sugar Man. When I went into the theater to sit in my assigned seating there was a girl already sitting there. I told her she was in my seat when I quickly saw that she was obviously drunk. She had a huge beer in her hand (Why would they serve her?) and then moved to the next seat. Well she could not stop laughing throughout this movie that was not a comedy. fine. I don't think i can get up to complain about someone laughing. Well she gets up in the middle of the movie to get another huge ass beer and proceeds to laugh. Well someone tried to shhh her and that's when the fight broke out!! The man on the other side of her and her boyfriend was really bothered by her and grabbed the dude by the shirt! Here's where it got dangerous. The violent crown reacted at a glacial pace to come in. Big ass beer glasses flying everywhere. Men fighting. Patrons trying to break it up. Right next to me!!!!! The kicker was the trouble it took to get my money refunded. They serve people that are drunk!! After Aurora how can you not have any security or procedures in place!?!? ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS THE MONEY!!! So sad for austin. THIS SHOULD BE A NICE PLACE LIKE IT PRETENDS TO BE!!!

Violet Crown is a cross between Arclight in Los Angeles and Alamo Drafthouse. I really like this place and I can't help compare it to the Alamo Drafthouse. They each have their pros and cons. The reserved seating at Violet Crown is a major plus. For popular movies, you don't have to show up an hour before the movie if you want a good seat. I wish Alamo would switch to reserved seating. The food at Violet Crown is very good. I had the Chicago dog and it was delicious and large for $5. I also had Iced Tea ($4) and popcorn ($6). My boyfriend had a ginger caipirinha ($8) that was strong and tasty. They only have one size for popcorn and it comes with free refills. I wish they would offer a cheaper small because I don't leave the movie theater unless I really have to use the restroom. Same for the soda. Although I enjoy getting served while watching a movie, it can be a distraction, especially when a server asks if he can get you anything else. At the Violet Crown, you buy your food and drinks and just bring them in with you. No servers to take away from your viewing experience. I live in central Austin and I'm glad I don't have to drive all the way up north to see an independent film. The food and drinks are great, there is free parking, and the seats are very comfortable. However, they should be more strict about the no talking policy during the movie. The person sitting next to my boyfriend chatted throughout the entire movie. I look forward to seeing another movie here.

Visited Violet Crown for the first time yesterday and really enjoyed the experience. Initially I was a little put off by the assigned seating, but looking back on it I think it's a good idea. It did eliminate the people you usually see randomly standing around, trying to find a seat after the movie has already started. Speaking of seating, the seats are leather (or close to it) and are very comfortable. Even better, there is TONS of leg room and my 6'5" frame had plenty of room to stretch out. Considering it's downtown, parking is also fairly easy. There's a garage attached to the theater, and it's free with validation. One of the nicer theaters I've been to, and other than dealing with the usual hassle of downtown, it was a great experience. I'd go again.

Things that impressed: - Free parking in the attached garage and clearly marked signs that show you to the theatre entrance. - Reserved seating! That's exciting cuz you can sit where you want without having to show up crazy early. - Show documentaries/independent films you might not otherwise get a chance to see in theatres. - Very stylish lounge. - Serve food & drinks (which I didn't try, so I can't speak on the quality of these) - Lots of leg room in the theatre - Few previews and no commercials before the show Things that were meh: - None of the workers were very friendly. I guess if I were working at 10 PM on a Friday night, I wouldn't be very happy either, but... shrug. - The customer service/ticketing desk is sort of inconspicuous. I mean, it's a small foyer so you figure it out after a couple of seconds, but when you walk in and the place is hoppin', your eye is totally drawn to everywhere else BUT the ticket counter. A sign might be nice. - For all that the rest of the place is swanky, the bathrooms were still very much movie-theatre bathrooms, haha. - Because of assigned seating, they don't open until 5 minutes before the screening, so if you don't want to get food or drink in the lounge, you're kind of just awkwardly standing about in the foyer, and then a guy comes around announcing that they're seating for your movie. There must be a more efficient way to go about this. All in all, a fun experience. It's kind of "apples and oranges" comparing it to the Drafthouse, so just don't. It's its own thing. Come and find out. =)

Let me preface this by saying that I love film and I live independent theaters. The Violet Crown is definitely fun. It reminds me a lot of the movie theaters that I have been to in New York. It differs from the Alamo Drafthouse in that there is an actual restaurant-lounge-bar in the lobby. You can have dinner/drinks before the movie or order something and take it in. There is no waitstaff in the theater itself. You pull out a swivel desk (school room style) and bring your own food in to enjoy. If your food isn't ready, they give you a vibrating pager so you know when to run back out and get it. That's nice. The pros? Great cocktails Interesting independent films Cool vibe Tasty food and concession treats The cons? Ticket price Food/drink price Lack of instructions for first-timers on how their system works (i.e. pagers for food, when to enter theater, what to do with dishes, etc.)

I think this place is a great, smaller, quiet, and cozy alternative to Alamo Drafthouse. The seats are reserved, parking is free, and while the food may not be as diverse as Alamo, the drinks are way better and stronger and I like the atmosphere and feel of this place. I don't have anything bad to say about it at all and that says a lot coming from me! :)

In the time since my original review of the Violet Crown theater, the place has become immensely popular. Perhaps the result of my review..... Now you must buy your ticket online in advance. Just about every screening is sold out in advance. You cannot walk up and buy tickets right before the movie. So, here are the realities of capitalism. The theater is at capacity for every screening. How can the owner increase profits? Rise prices on concessions. Those $5 margaritas I mentioned in my original review are not only a thing of the past, but the bartender claims they are a figment of my imagination. Now they cost a lot more. I think $9.

The front row seats are definitely the way to go!!! Unless you are seeing a 3D movie don't sit in the front row, according to the theater staff I spoke with. Just went here for the first time (5/26) to see the new Will Ferrell movie "Everything Must Go" (which I recommend seeing and it's only currently showing at this theater in Austin). I won't go over anything that has already been covered in previous reviews but I am an Alamo Drafthouse snob and was very impressed with this theater. It's super clean and a really nice modern layout in the lobby with the concession stand, bar, with a little restaurant/lounge area. Parking is free (up to 4 hours) at the garage which you enter on San Antonio (corner of 2nd). Be sure to bring your card with you to get the validation stamp and get it when you get your tickets printed or else you will forget once you are already in the garage after the movie -just as my friend did and had to walk back. They have a really cool selection of fountain sodas which are $4 with free refills. I also really love that the fountain machine is right in the lobby so you can help yourself throughout the movie and don't have to wait in line like you do at every other American theater concession stand. Another cool thing about the fountain sodas is the selection. They have your standard Coke, diet Coke, Sprite, but they also have "Dublin Dr. Pepper" with pure cane sugar! I've never had this stuff before but there must be crack in it because I kept going back for 2 additional refills. That real cane sugar is addictive! They also have a few different Maine root beer selections (Black cherry and their Pink Drink) -I took a photo of the fountain machine and posted it here because I was so impressed with it and their placement of it right in the theater hallway. Popcorn was good. To me, it's a little pricey at $6 and the size of the bag it comes in would be considered a small at any theater chain concession stand. You do get unlimited refills of popcorn which is nice and I took advantage of that as well but it would be cool if it was served in a metal bowl (like they do at the drafthouse) or at lease in a bigger bag. After reading other reviews about the front row seats being so comfortable we went on-line and selected seats in the 1st row, One big plus about this theater that they get major points for is they don't have any service/convenience fee (per ticket) on their website. For 3D performances according to the site they do charge a $1 service fee but I probably would never see something in 3D here. Every other theater I know including the Drafthouse charges at least a buck per ticket for buying tickets on their website. We went before 6 since it's only $9 compared to $11 after 6pm. Front row is awesome. They are reclined leather seats with a separate leather ottoman to kick up your feet. I didn't feel too close to the screen or felt I strained my neck. The theaters are small but they are all reserved seating so you don't need to get there early and line up. I would say the screen is much smaller than the traditional movie theater screen but they have made the best out of the available space. ON A RANDOM PEOPLE WATCHING NOTE: I saw actor and Austin resident, Turk Pipkin in the lobby. I best remember him from a couple episodes of The Sopranos. He played the Evangelical songwriting and narcoleptic boyfriend of Janice Soprano -you know, the one who kept falling asleep at the dinner table! Will definitely return and highly recommend to anyone that wants to go to a movie in downtown Austin!

I just don't like this place very much. Last time we went, we got there thirty minutes early, since you can't order food in the theater. Isn't it fun to have to reserve seats ahead of time AND still have to get there thirty minutes in advance? Awesome! So we sit down at one of the tables, but the waitress never comes by. After about fifteen minutes we finally have to flag her down, and she explains that the fact that we sat down when the last table's check was still on the table confused her. If that confuses you, you need a new job. It's harsh but true. We're sitting around looking at menus, not to mention we are, you know, NOT THE SAME PEOPLE, so you need to be able to at least ask us if we've been served. So now it's fifteen minutes until the movie - we order two hot dogs, nachos, and a pizza. Then we wait. And wait. And wait. Our movie's starting - the waitress comes up and tells us we can continue to wait or they can give us a buzzer, because nothing says "fun, non-distracting movie experience" like leaving five minutes into the movie to get your food. We continue to wait for another ten minutes, and finally ask for the buzzer. We begin walking into the theater, and I look over, and what should I see but two hot dogs, nachos, and a pizza sitting under a heat lamp in the kitchen area. I walk up to the lady in the kitchen and ask if that's our food. She looks at our buzzer and says, "No, that's a different buzzer number." I argue for a bit and she finally realizes that they gave us the wrong buzzer. Starting to get the picture? We had already paid for our food, and if we had walked into the theater, we would have NEVER gotten it. The way this place works is just bizarre. I have literally never had a good experience here - this was just the worst of them. The theaters are nice - I particularly like the college-lecture-hall-style desks, much more convenient for eating drippy food than the Drafthouse's tables. There's not a bad seat in the house. The projectors and sound system are fine. But I just can't see giving this any more than three stars - quite frankly, I think maybe that's being generous. I mean, yeah, it's a theater that serves alcohol and food, but since they don't serve it in the theater, and since it takes an inordinate amount of time to get your food, they end up being WORSE than your regular old-school theater! In short, forget this place unless you want to see some super-artsy movie that isn't going to be at the Drafthouse - and even then I'd suggest just going to the Arbor anyway.

Very clean and well appointed. We liked the small venue and assigned seats. The tray for food is small and a little awkward to get setup but it's okay for something small. There are cup holders for each seat. I think all the seats are good seats. Just remember there is just one set of stairs so if you choose a seat on the far end, you'll have to disrupt everyone on your row to get out. Good wine and beer choices.

Definitely a cool place. Rooms are small, but no problem, there's plenty of room for everyone, and it's easy to see the screen from any seat! The front row is the best, so try to reserve your seats ahead of time online. The theater reflects chic and modern. It's also quaint, which is nice. The seats are large comfortable, but the arm rests don't go up. Something worth checking out, but I'm not sure if I'd go again. I'm not too much into independent films and tickets are a little expensive.

So far so good. We've been here numerous times and even got the front row with ottomans (pure luck) most of the time. If you ask for them in check in you might get them. The hummus and pita is fabulous as are all of the dishes that we have eaten there. Parking is easy. Highly recommend it for date night!!

yes. violet crown is like artisanal cinema. it's hard not to feel like a saudi prince, seated in a leather armchair on the front row, eating your hot dog, or cake ball, or junior mint, drinking a cocktail or a Topo, or a little snifter of highly potent craft beer, and watching humans speak and do things for your amusement on a giant screen. it's a good life. and there is free parking. and there is a delightful second floor terrace. the only drag is that you HAVE to plan ahead. if you just pop in with the hope of grabbing a seat or two, there won't be any available showings for hours because the entire city has already bought tickets online.

I really love Violet Crown, and with the Dobie Theater long gone, I'm glad an art house theater like this one finally exists in Austin. The auditoreums are small and intimate with excellent sound/projection. I've never had trouble getting tickets online as long as I purchase 24 hours or so in advance. Friendly staff, easy parking situation. I've only had the food there a couple times, but it's always been good.

My favorite place to see a movie! Great drinks although the food selection is minimal the quality is amazing. It's easy to park in the bi level garage next door and they validate. Very good service and the only place to see more artsy movies and foreign films. I am so glad they are here in Austin and we have a choice in theaters with drinks. Oh yeah, they are a full bar not just beer and that is wonderful for those of us allergic to hops.

This was the best movie theater I have ever been too. I highly recommend sitting in the first row and enjoying the amazing chairs up there. The free validated parking is excellent, allowing you to watch a movie and then get a beer or bite at a nearby place during your four hour window of free parking. I also thought the staff was funny and helpful. A great place!

My very favorite theater. I love the small theaters and low key crowd. I think the ticket price is fair. So are the concessions-free refills on popcorn and drinks...and they have Cheerwine in the fountain! They make great drinks and also offer a good beer selection. I can also appreciate that food isn't served in the theaters which can be distracting. You just order in the lobby and bring in. Selecting your seats is pretty great too. When your movie lets out, walk down past ACL Live. You might catch the audio of a live show like we did. Willie Nelson was on and you could hear it all. So cool! Just grab a bench or go to the bar nearby. His statue is out front of ACL. Very nice

Wow, why have I never been here before? Awesome craft cocktails, particularly the Corpse Bride with genever and plethora of other liqueurs and herbs. Others have commented that the drinks are expensive, but I think they are on par with craft cocktails at other high end bars in downtown ($9-$12). They also offer super sized cocktails to last through the movie LOL. For food, we ordered watermelon salad, Brussel sprouts, and a Mediterranean plate. The sprouts are worth a trip here alone. Crunchy, bitter, sweet, salty, nutty. Mmmmmm. Definitely get the bacon if you eat meat. Watermelon salad is perfect for a hot Austin summer evening, bright flavors, slightly sweet and a tad salty from the cheese. Mediterranean plate was a solid dish of baba ganoush, hummous, falafel and veggies. Great, intimate film experience. Highly recommended.

I often attend movies at the Violet Crown that I have never heard of and no one I know has seen. Their curation is so spectacular , the film is almost always excellent, entertaining and thought provoking . The intimidate theatre, great food and bar selections make it a terrific choice. You usually must buy your tickets at home on their website as the theatre is so small, it will likely be sold out.

The BEST movie theater I have ever been to! There is a balcony overlooking the city square below, free parking, a spacious area to eat and relax, craft cocktails, very good food, excellent (!!) staff, and the chairs are huge and they recline! Plan your trip in advance as tickets sell out and the theaters are small! There is also assigned seating - at least for the theater I was it!

My favorite Austin theater! Yes, even more than the Drafhouse. Small theaters, great movies, good food, great beer and cocktail options. It's basically heaven for a cinephile like me! And - since this is often a problem in downtown - they validate parking for three hours if you park in the AMLI's parking lot!

If you would enjoy a refreshing film watching experience, then here is the place for you. Intimate and tucked away on 2nd street, this rare gem of a theater is one of the best kept secrets in Austin. We watched the Amy Winehouse film and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Great staff and service.

First off I want to say , beautiful building , cool view , great graphic design. I like modern things and this is trying to be a modern theatre . It executes it fairly well . Secondly , first row is best row . You get to put your feet up , you have a great view of the screen . Thirdly, and this is the reason for only 4 stars. The theatre experience itself is fairly normal , chairs aren't that comfy, screen quality was great but sound was a little lacking. Finally, I didn't try any of the food or drinks so I can't judge it based on that however the staff was very friendly and helpful .

We went to see a movie here after comparing times at Alamo Drafthouse and deciding this would be more convenient. It was a great decision! We arrived early enough to get a drink and sit on the patio outdoors (after a string of storms, the evening was perfect). The Violet Beauregarde was a delicious choice and perfect to enjoy right before seeing a movie. The patio itself was great too - there weren't too many chairs, so I could understand how it might get crowded, but we must have just picked the perfect night. The staff were all amazing! The bartender, though very very busy, was never abrupt or rude to anyone I saw. He was working to make multiple drinks and take orders/credit cards nonstop, and waiting in line for a minute or two was almost fun, as I could watch different drinks being made. The other staff, from the snack stand crew to the ticket takers, were all cheerful and ready to explain anything confusing to people inside (you pick up preordered tickets from the snack stand...odd). The theater itself was fantastic. The building is a little hard to find at first, as it's tucked away and on the second story, and I got the same feeling from the screening rooms. They're small (another review described them as 'intimate,' which I agree with) and the people checking tickets tell you exactly where to sit and will be able to recognize you if you reenter. The chairs were comfortable and spacious, although the tray setup seemed odd (we didn't get any food and so didn't use them). It was definitely a new experience seeing a movie here! I'm used to giant theaters (and whining children), so this was a fantastic way to enjoy a great movie. It's almost five stars, but I did see a couple women in heels almost fall into the cracks between rows of seats, and it could be hard to navigate the theater (or the stairs up to it, although there is an elevator) if you aren't young or sober. I'm looking forward to going back!

Normally this place is great. But be aware, the "complimentary validated parking" is only valid for 4 hours. So if you try to do dinner, movie, drinks like we did, you will get reamed with a $15 flat rate when you leave the parking garage. And they won't tell you about the 4 hour rule until you're leaving.

This place is called the Violet Crown because it is undisputedly the royal highness of the art cinema industry. I really can't rave enough about how much I love the tastefully designed interior of the theater, or the fact that there is both a snack bar and a cafe to choose from depending on which you're more feeling. I love that you can take wine into a movie, put your feet up (if you're in the front row!), and know that 99% of the time, the crowd actually cares about watching the movie with you. It's comfortable, accommodating, and an all around pleasant experience for any film-lover.

Intimate atmosphere to see a movie. I thought the drinks were a little overpriced and if you get there early, you can't wait in your theatre - they call you about 5-10 minutes before the previews start to take your seat. This is not a full service place like the Alamo Drafthouses, but you order food and bring it in.

So I've lived in Austin for 5 years and never visited Violet Crown. I've driven by it but never had a reason to go seeing as how I live in north Austin. A last minute decision to see a movie with friends on a Monday night landed me at VC. I didn't know what to expect. I knew that we had reserved seats on the front row (which I was against as I was thinking this was a traditional theater) and there was free parking. Upon arrival, after parking for the free in the attached garage, I entered the bright and open space of VC. Directly in front of me was the bar, a snack bar, and the lounge. To the left was what I later found out was the ticket counter but the signage was lacking nor was anyone stationed there. I sat at the bar in the lounge area to wait for friends. I browsed the menu as I was pretty hungry at this point. It started to get busy while I was sitting there so no one came to me right away which was fine. I was busy on my phone and deciding what to get. My friend arrived so we went to the snack bar counter to have our parking validated (this ensures that it is free up to 4 hours of parking) and to order food. I ended up ordering the chicken tahini wrap along with the crown fries (aka truffle fries). It was kind of pricey. $15 bucks for a wrap and fries and then I got a $4 soda. $20 later for a meal at a movie theater. Good thing I decided against having an adult beverage. The chicken wrap wasn't too bad. It seemed like a healthier option so I was good with it. The tahini sauce came on the side which I liked so I could monitor how much I used and it was pretty delicious. The truffle fries were amazing!!! Totally threw the healthiness out the window with these (moderation right?!). So our movie was in theater 3 and we had row A (front row) seats. These seats are handicap accessible but lucky for us there were only 3 others in the theater so we didn't have to give up the seats. The front row seats recline back and have an ottoman to prop your feet up. All I needed was a blanket. I was pretty darn comfortable. The screen was at an angle and the seat reclined at an angle so the combination of that made for good viewing pleasure. I liked that the movie started at 6:15pm with some previews and no crazy pre-show stuff and the actual movie was on an playing at 6:23pm. They were not playing around. It was somewhat annoying to have to order food at the counters outside, go back into the theater, and wait for the pager to go off. Once the pager went off you had to get up and go get your food which disrupts the experience for not only the person getting food but for others. Also, I didn't realize there were trays tucked into the seat which seem difficult to get out. Overall I'd probably only come here if invited by friends, on a weeknight, and for a not new movie. I couldn't imagine enjoying the small theater if it was a full house. It just doesn't seem like a good viewing experience. Luckily it is priced the same as other theaters so I don't feel like I wasted any money but I was able to try a new place.

Great central location (2nd and Guadalupe) for an indie theater with small, cozy screening rooms, comfy chairs (with fold-out tables), and food and booze options. We tried the Mediterranean plate, which at $10 is a little steep (although concessions is how these places make a buck, in fairness) but really quite good. Unlike the Alamo, there's no wait staff (that's not a bad thing, though). Very few trailers, no-hassle lines, very clean, new, and nice, all for about $2 more than you'd pay at a conventional Regal 8. If an intimate movie experience with optional dinner and drinks is what you're looking for, there's not much more that you could ask from them.

So I'm a little torn about Violet Crown, but after some serious consideration, the good far outweighs the bad. The theaters are awesome. They're clean, spacious, super comfortable, provide LOTS of leg room, and I'm sure there is no bad seat in the house. However, if you're in one of the theaters toward the front door, you can hear a lot of what is going on in the waiting area. Like, right in the middle of a steamy sex scene, the guy working the front door notified those waiting for the 6:30 showing of Melancholia that they were now seating. That's awesome, and all, but I'm watching a movie, not waiting at the Southwest terminal. The beers and lounge food all seem reasonably priced, but if you want a soft drink or typical movie junk food, it's kind of ridiculous. My boyfriend got a pint of Circle brewing something-or-other for $5; I got a bottle of Maine Root Ginger Beer for $4. Paying $4 for Ginger Beer wasn't my favorite moment, I gotta say. I'm pretty sure Topo Chico was $3 a bottle and y'all, you can get a 12 pack of Topo Chico from Central Market for $6. Candy, popcorn, and other movie theater goods is as highly priced as you would find at any theater. I guess what strikes me as so strange is that the lounge food is priced so reasonably. What I do love is the ability to reserve seats ahead of time. For me, it makes the whole movie-going experience more seamless and less stressful. I think Violet Crown wants your visit to their theater to be an event, and to me, they've achieved that. And hey -- I can appreciate their movie usher has a good, loud, announcer voice, but take it down a few notches, eh?

Awesome intimate place to watch my Independent movies. The staff is awesome, knowledgable & helpful. Genuine. I love that parking is validated & the staff at ticketing & at the concessions seem to enjoy being there! One star less bc my boyfriend & I last watched Frances Ha & had a not so great experience with a lady server. She wasn't awful, but she seemed elsewhere & it showed. I'm not one to expect someone friendly (that's a plus), but I was having trouble just ordering & obtaining water refills. It's not a restaurant, but a small bar with food & it wasn't busy.. So hate to take a star for that reason, but it was also my birthday. But I still love this theater & will be back!

I am a big fan of the idea of reserved seating which allows for strolling in right when the movie starts instead of almost an hour before. That was nice. The local draft beer and drink specials were really great too. I wanted to really love this place, but for the price of the ticket and the fact that you are locked into a seat, I would've expected to not have to deal with a really sticky fold-up table. It was gross and made me uncomfortable.

I would love to be able to actually review my experience watching a movie at this theater, but unfortunately, I won't get that opportunity. Why? I went with my fiance and his family to see Zero Dark Thirty last Sunday, and in spite of having reserved all but two seats in the row, our seats were taken by an elderly couple that obviously didn't understand how the system worked. We were a few minutes into previews when we entered the theater and as our family started to take their seats, I immediately noticed that we were short two chairs. We all got out our tickets to locate the source of the mistake, but by the time I realized it was the couple closest to the aisle, the movie was starting and my fiance was left standing in the aisle with two beers and no seat. As we left the theater to try and remedy the situation, the couple that had taken our seats had the audacity to make snide remarks about the fact that we were standing after the movie had started. Are you kidding me?! There wouldn't be an issue if you had sat where you were supposed to sit! We then located management to tell them what had happened and they were of no help at all. They assessed the situation several times, entering the theater for minutes at a time, but ultimately told us they wouldn't ask the couple to move because it would be "disruptive". What's the point of seat reservations if people are allowed to steal your seats? The manager asked us if there was another movie we'd like to see instead, but when we picked out another one, he informed us it was sold out. Well, maybe we should have just sat in there anyway since obviously he wouldn't have done anything about it.They offered to pay for our drinks and food. While we appreciated the refund, we would have appreciated it even more if the manager grew a spine and asked rude patrons to leave so we could have enjoyed the movie with the rest of our family. I'll be going to Alamo Drafthouse from now on where they openly advertise "kicking your ass out" if you pull stunts like that.

This is by far the overall best movie theater in Austin. It combines the best movie going experience that Austin has to offer. The film selection is wonderfully edited with top documentaries, independent, and limited release films. I would say it's on par with the Arbor Regal in terms of film selection. Although it can be a quite expensive experience (not necessarily more than the Alamo), it is totally worth going. Unlike the Alamo, there is no disgusting smell permeating throughout the theater. Each theater is wonderfully intimate, with by far the best movie audience in Austin - no idiots, not too old (like the Arbor), and genuine film fans. It's also a great location for people living or working downtown, and is situated in the wonderful 2nd Street District with restaurants and retail in the area. The food is also quite good, although verging on yuppie flair. Reserved seating is such a stress reliever.

I was not impressed with how they handled their free screenings. The soda was very expensive, even for free refills. The chairs were extremely comfortable though. After talking w a friend realized they are not in charge of when the seats are opened up. Next time will try their food.

I really wanted to like this place. It seemed like it would be a cozier, less stressful Alamo, and to an extent it was. But it left much to be desired. The good: - I like the quick seating right before the movie starts. - Bringing food into the theater is nice. - The seats are pretty comfortable, and the little side table is convenient. - 4 hour parking validation is great. - Small, cozy theaters are nice. The not so good: - The food wasn't great -- not bad, but not what I would call good either. It was OK, slightly overpriced, but that's to be expected at the movies. - Our server seemed very irritated to be there serving us, which was uncomfortable. The bad: - The overhead lights were never turned off during the showing. I've only been here once, and I'm not sure if this is true for every showing or just a fluke, but it was really distracting to me. - I could hear the movie pretty clearly in the neighboring theater, as well as dishes clanking, some people talking, etc. That really sucked. Overall, I'll give it 3 stars because I think I'd still prefer this experience to going to a big box theater. Though I'm more likely to endure the slight stress of finding parking and waiting in line at Alamo for the better movie experience and better food/service.

Went to see Before Midnight at the Violet Crown. Don't get me wrong, I love the Alamo, but WOW, this is a great place. The seats are really comfy (especially the first row)! It was nice to sit back and pop my feet up on the ottoman. The popcorn was yummy with real butter and free refills for cokes. Very cool. I was a bit cold, though, so next time I'll bring a sweater. I'll definitely be back ... and soon! Oh yeah, they'll validate your parking in the garage, too.

An amazing movie-going experience. I went to go see Melancholia matinee showing (tickets were only $7.50) the day after new years and I loved the entire experience. I think purchasing your assigned seat over the web is a huge plus. This relieves a lot of anxiety. It's hard to think why someone hasn't thought of this before. Furthermore, the food is great, there's a full bar, the seats are comfortable, the sound is phenomenal, and the theater is CLEAN. There are a lot of parallels drawn between the Alamo Drafthouse and Violet Crown that I don't find particularly fair. For instance: you're not waited on while you watch the movie. I think this is a big plus, I find the waiters at Alamo can be a bit distracting at times. I love the Drafthouse equally but these two shouldn't be competitors, it's a totally different experience. My advice is to go early, enjoy some good food and drinks in their gorgeous lounge area, and grab round 2 before you take your seat. Don't rush in the last minute before showtime. Come early and enjoy yourself.

This place has a terrible policy for refunds. I work in the film business and have supported this theatre for years. I was unable to call ahead of the screening because I was on set, working and can't be on the phone. So I called 30 minutes after it began and the manager refused to give me a new ticket to a later screening. Funny thing is ALAMO draft house has an AMAZING refund policy and supports the people that support them. This place has terrible service in the restaurant and it always smells like s toilet because they serve brussels sprouts. The seats have crumbs on them and there always seems to grease on the tables. The only reason I was going there was because its the only place showing the movie I wanted to see. I'll never go back there again.

This is my favorite theater in town. If it is showing here, I will go without a question. If it isn't at Violet Crown, I will head to Alamo Drafthouse. Before I went the first time I was worried about the parking but I was stoked to learn that they validate parking in the garage by the theater.

The food is not very good. I recommend going to dinner first and then seeing a movie here. Drinks are good, screen size is fine, but the seating is a bit awkward. The location is convenient and it's nice to have an alternative to the Alamo Drafthouse. Also, they validate parking - so don't forget your ticket in the car.

This is a place that used to intimidate me. What I used to think - People here gotta be cool (hipsters, film know it alls) - People gotta be $ to pay for parking somewhere too What I thought afterwards: This place is amazing! Parking validation for 4 hours. So after watching a movie, my fiancee and I decided to walk around downtown and pump the Austin downtown economy with our wallets =) There is a nice bar and lounge if you arrive early - or want to stay late. Every seat is also a great seat. A friend tipped us to choose the seats in the front. Why? Because the front row seats get ottoman's for their legs. I guess you could do that on the other rows, but your ottoman would be the seat in front of you . . . not sure if that person would be happy smelling your sweaty but well manicured feet. Anyways, prices for the tickets were around $9 each. I live in East Austin. Regal in the Arbor has independent films but it's a drive and an older theater. The Violet Crown is a great location with new things coming up all the time. Definitely a great date spot. Catching a movie and getting a bite in downtown is made easier because of the Violet Crown.

The VC has 4 hr parking validation, a nice bar area with whole foods style snacks, and first run movies from the foreign slash indie side. tickets are pricey, so I only see first showing during the week. most films here also play at regal arbor art house, but that's a long drive from center city. the screens are very small be aware of that. some films demand to be seen on a big screen, so for those I see at regal arbor great hills or santikos bijou in San Antonio. for dialogue and plot driven fare, the NYC style small screens are fine. on weekends the patrons are mostly rich retired people new to Austin, or their poor young offspring new to Austin. some local filmmakers have told me the projector and sounds systems are not good. filmmakers will notice quite easily.but for most of us, their digital system is fine.

I've gotta admit, Violet brings a bit more simplicity and intuition to the dinner+movie experience, or 'Dovie' as Mark K has said. First off, brilliant violet neon installation marking the entry. If you know me, this is already one extra star. On top of this, parking is free in the shared AMLI garage for up to four hours as long as you validate, and plenty independent films (Almodóvar, etc). There's a small bar lounge area, allowing you to bring in food/drink to your screening, and there's a fountain machine for refills near the screening hallway and a bussing area to leave finished food/drinks upon leaving your screening. Individual theater rooms are more intimate, chairs are comfy, and after watching That One Audio Scene from 2013's Her, you may feel like you shared a pretty sexy, artsy moment with less than 50 other strangers. Bonus for sexy-art lovers everywhere. But allow me to repeat: free parking is freely validated, for free, once you validate at the cinema, for up to FOUR HOURS. This is enough time to watch a 2-hour movie and: - make eyes with art gallery owners - deny you've met before - confirm brilliant blue eyes - interview for a position - take a dance lesson - participate in brunch - or dinner - meander around downtown - go kayaking on Town Lake - roll down the lush shaded hills of the north shore - walk a dog - jog a loop of x distance Violet, let's go frolic in the grass.

David and I finally swung by this place, and I guess it was about damn time. We're huge fans of Alamo on Slaughter, and while this place won't change our minds on which theater is best, it was a nice visit. Rolling in after driving back from Dallas, we decided to check out A Most Wanted Man and figured that day was as good as any to try Violet Crown. The bar area was super cool. I like how there is a mix of well-lit areas and some darker areas - kinda of fits everyone's vibes. What I didn't like was getting stared down the entire time we were there. I get it - David and I are an "odd" couple. Get over it. I know sometimes I can be paranoid about such things so it was "relieving" to know David felt just as uncomfortable. Oh, and the movie wasn't that great, R.I.P. Philip Seymour Hoffman. Overall, the experience was rather meh. I think it has a beautiful bar area, the food smelled great, the bartender and servers were really awesome - but the overall crowd was not very pleasant. And I like the table/chair setup at Alamo better.

Perhaps I do not get out in the world that much but this is such a great idea. Violet Crown Cinema shows 4-5 movies in very small theaters. The size you ask? Well it is 8 seats across and perhaps 10 rows back. The front row consists of chez lounge seating ( boy I never thought I would use that in a yelp description). The other seats are super plush and comfy and very wide. They have wonderful cup holders and fold out trays (sort of like plane seats) for dining. The picture quality was outstanding as was the sound system. I must point out that they do not kill you by playing tons of movie previews ( If I go to hell that is what they will do there I am sure). I saw American Hustle and the sound track just rocked....it wasn't crazy loud but very pure sounding. The best part for me was the bar, and that you could bring your drinks in ....yeah try that in San Francisco....all you olde english in a paper bag dudes. The bar is bomb and the bar tender is bad ass making killer cocktails. I had something with bullit bourbon, st germain, bitters and I forget but it was soooo good. They also serve food which looked awesome...pretty much fried thinga ma jiggy type stuff. Final bonus was you get to reserve your seats....and there are no bad seats in the place. Oh yeah they have free validated parking for 4 hours in the same building. You austinites have it soooo good. I am jealous!

Where does one go when it's raining cats and dogs in Austin? violet theater! How cool is it to be in a theater that serves great food and alcohol? ot to mention the intimate and comfortable screening rooms. Great locations. Free covered parking. can't ask for any more!

Love this place! Sure, there's the drafthouses all around, but I like the Violet Crown because I never feel pressured to eat if I'm not hungry. You order outside and bring the food in, so people aren't walking in front of you and paying for the bill the entire show. The seats are kooshy and comfy and the theaters are small and intimate. The best part is that they are willing to play the Indie films that the drafthouses don't always carry. It's a great time for Oscar watching. Food-wise, the menu isn't extensive, but it's better than beers and burgers. Plus they have a great drink menu and theatre sizes for a couple dollars more so you won't have to go and refill-- granted, that doesn't account for how many times you have to go to the bathroom instead. One note/tip: If your movie has a silent score and soundtrack (foxcatcher), do your best not to order the hummus plate. Carrots and celery sticks have never crunched so loud in a silent theater.

Would rather go to the Alamo Drafthouse. By the time I went to complain about the entire row in front of me being on their cell phones, there was not a manager to be found.

I've only been here once, but service was excellent, food was good (only had the spring rolls) and the theater was comfortable. I also like that they play a lot of limited release films and they validate for free parking. I'd definitely return.

There are so many reasons to adore the Violet Crown: 1. Excellent quality movies!! The best current independent, foreign films and documentaries. 2. Intimate theaters - you can never get a bad seat and the smaller rooms give you the feeling you're enjoying a private screening. 3. The chairs are very comfy. 4. Reserved seats - I love not having to get to a theater early only to hurry up and stand in line. 5. No pre-show how-great-is-our-theater-brand, commercials or subliminal concession marketing. Only one brief reminder to turn off your cell and a couple good previews, then your show starts. 6. Eats are two ways: the traditional movie house vending (popcorn, candies, soda), or you can go for something with a little more substance at the bar café (my personal favorite is the Mediterranean plate). 7. Enjoy an upscale cocktail with your movie, or a Texas pint on tap. 8. Free parking!!

In how many cities can you go to a movie, have a cocktail, and eat a quasi-gourmet meal at the same time? We Austinites are truly spoiled by the Violet Crown, Alamo, and iPix. Violet Crown is a bit more pretentious and exclusive than Alamo Drafthouse. Whereas Alamo has mainstream movies and themed events to old favorites, Violet Crown often is the first in town to debut features from SXSW. The food is fairly comparable- pizzas, appetizers, beer, and cocktails. I've had pizza both places and didn't find one more impressive than the other- it is move theater pizza afterall albeit the upscale version. On my most recent visit, I tried a pizza with peach slices, goat cheese, and kale. It was scant on the kale although I suppose not everyone wants a salad on their pizza. It came out in about four minutes leading me to believe that everything is prepped well in advance. The crust was thinner and not tasteless, but just not great. Prices for tickets and food are as expected (expect for the kombucha which goes for $7 a bottle!) Beyond the food, I appreciate the smaller theater seating and casual dining area. Plus with free parking, it's a great place to hang out any night of the week.

My husband and I recently came here on our "date night" and were blown away by the ease in which we were able to see a top rated movie in the busiest and trendiest part of Austin. I love this theater for many reasons... ~ the ease in parking (if you use the adjacent parking garage they will validate for 4 hours and you are guaranteed a spot). ~ if a movie is playing here it is worth seeing. Whoever picks out the movies for this place deserves an award. I have never seen a bad movie here. ~ Beautiful view of downtown Austin....this is why I love Austin!! Some downsides to this theater (this is why I gave it 3 out of 4 stars) ~ the "constant renovations"....can we just be done with it already!! ~the grab and go menu .... cheapens the great food and dining experience. Overall I would go back .... great movie experience right in the heart of downtown Austin!

Label this venue SOBER HOSTILE. The first thing that hits you at the door is the liquor they want to push on you. When asked to put mocktails on par with overpriced cocktails, management is defensive. Take your business to the Alamo Drafthouse.

Art house films, reserved seating, and a respectable drink selection. It's my favorite theater in town!

I've been in Austin 4 years and have always chosen Alamo Drafthouse as my go-to eat and drink movie theater. My boyfriend and I decided to try this out after checking movie times and this ended up having more show times available. The theater itself is a little hard to find as it is on the second floor of a high rise downtown. The parking garage is a bit annoying as it is extremely tight and busy, but then again what parking garage downtown isn't? I do love that they validate your parking so that you can park for free (otherwise it is $15..). My only complaint here is that when my boyfriend and I arrived, we had to wait a bit to be helped/served. There were several bartenders that were busy, but a simple acknowledgement would have been nice. We ordered two cocktails..and for the price and how they tasted, I was pretty disappointed. The theaters are EXTREMELY small and you almost feel as if you're sitting on top of the person next to you. In comparison to Alamo, you don't have anywhere close to as much room. I had to get up at one point in the movie to grab a refill and I felt so bad crawling my way out in front of people to just get outside of the theater. The seats aren't near as nice or spacious as what they appear to be online. We didn't order food, but I did see several plates going out and it all looked delicious. I just think for the price, lack of room, and not-so attentive staff, it's nothing special. I will stick to Alamo.

Want to know what a baby of an Indie film festival and the Lakeline Alamo Drafthouse looks like? Visit the Violet Crown! I love the amazing cozy lounge and bar area. Also, a great view from the 2nd terrace with some cozy seats outside. Great service, and the food all looked good, I only had the chips as a snack which were great. You could just come here to enjoy a drink and bite to eat with a friend. If you don't finish you can bring the food in with you. The seats have slide out tables and cup holders. In a hurry and don't have time to order something in the lounge, that's fine, because there was a great selection of upscale movie snacks to purchase at a separate counter and bring in with you as they don't serve food inside like Alamo. Be sure to wait for your movie to be called on the loudspeaker, that means they have opened the theatre and you can go get your pre-assigned seat. They usually seat about 5 minutes before the show time. I would recommend reserving the tickets on-line as the theatres are small, and filled up fast. The print out is your movie ticket. Also, if you park in their parking garage or use their free valet service bring in the stub to get it validated. The theatre itself was comfortable, the seats were great, I didn't have issues with leg room, and the sound and video quality were fine. I would definitely come back to see an Indie movie in style.

This is my single favorite place to go in Austin. It's a cinephile's dream. The theaters are clean, comfy (sit in front) and spacious. The audiences are respectful and quiet. And in the three years or so I've been a regular customer, I think maybe once I've seen them show a bad movie. The beer and cocktail selection is fantastic and the free parking garage is great once you get the hang of where it is. Go early and plan to eat and drink before the film, not during.

I don't think I am hipster enough for this place. I don't get why people like it. The concept of eating while watching a movie is pretty much the norm in this city after Alamo. And instead of going to a good, fairly priced place, people go here. The theater is so small you feel like you are in a closet. There is no in-theater wait staff, so you have to go get your concessions yourself. And there isn't really anything special about the place, unless you think being overpriced is something to be excited about. They do have movies that not a lot of other places are showing, but I guess I am not artsy enough for that either. The free parking is nice, but other than that, it's just your average theater.

I like this place as a movie theatre and snack bar. The food in the lounge.... It's ok. The pizza has too much cheese and too much of a doughy crust. Club soda should have bubbles.... Come for the movie and skip the lounge. There are better places within a minute walk.

  • Elli M.

Classy yet unpretentious. I like going to the movies if there is one I want to see, but this place makes me love going to the movies. The seats are comfortable, they are selective about the films they show, and the food and drinks are reasonably priced (as far as movie theatre food goes) and pretty good. Love the overall vibe. If you can, buy the tickets online as the theatres are small and they remain busy even on weekdays and movies that have been out for weeks.

well done Violet Crown. I have been twice now and both experiences were great. We had drinks both times at the bar, no food, so I cant comment there. Booking and buying tickets online was very easy and straight forward. Yes, this theater does cost a little more than a typical movie theater, however the ease of free valet parking out front, reserved seating that are comfortable makes it well worth it.

I alway enjoyed seeing movies at the Director's Guild theatre in Los Angeles. It was one of the few places you could go and watch a movie WITHOUT suffering through the usual movie-house experience of uncomfortable, broken-down seats, sticky floors, folks talking / texting during the show, 20 minutes of commercials before the trailers began, etc, etc, etc. It was the ultimate movie experience. Everyone in attendance was on the same wavelength; there to see a first rate copy of the film being shown - in the absolute best movie-viewing environment. The Violet Crown theaters remind me a lot of this venue. Love how they load in the audience a few minutes before the show is scheduled to start, there are only three or so previews, and then the show begins. Bravo Austin!

I appreciate that Violet Crown is another option for viewing films here in Austin. It's nice to have another choice available. Parking validation is a nice touch since Downtown parking is getting ridiculous. The restaurant/lounge is also a good option. However, the menu selections are not as veggie friendly as I would like. It's clean, small and easy to navigate. The screens look and sound great and the film lean more toward independent films (another plus for me). Although some people may not be a fan, I love the fact that assigned seats are available.

This is my favorite place to see movies in Austin! I love that you can buy a seat ahead of time, and go right in when the movie is about to begin. Definitely worth checking out, and go early to get some food or a drink at the bar!

Finally, a local alternative to the Drafthouse. I love the Alamo, but I hate needing to be at the theater an hour before new movies and waiting in line for decent seats. The Violet Crown has a much more limited line-up, but this is going to become my new go-to theatre when it's showing the movies I'm excited to see. You can select your seats on-line, so if all you want to do is slide in right when the movie starts, you can. The bar is fantastic. The drinks are reasonably priced and the food is great, plus the atmosphere is trendy. I also really liked that they don't open the theatre until 5 minutes before the show, it forces everyone to sit in the bar and hang out, but there are plenty of comfy club chairs to hang out in while you wait. The theaters themselves are nice, but nothing outstanding. The seats recline and there is plenty of leg room, but they aren't big and cushy. Violet Crown isn't charging like iPic for their tickets, so I don't really have a complaint about the seats. All in all, this is a very well designed theater and as long as they continue to show movies I want to see, it'll be my first choice for movie night.

Don't be afraid of something new! That's what I was thinking when reading Yelp reviews of the Violet Crown Cinema. My wife and I had also been hesitant to buy the first ticket to the theater because we did not know what to expect. The hesitation comes with good reason though. There would be a new movie experience, food experience, eating food in a movie experience, drinking experience, and parking experience involved. And like some other Yelpers I was trying decide, before making the commitment, if Violet Crown was going be like a sacred trip to the Alamo Drafthouse? or like the over-priced ho-hum Gold Class (now iPic)? the uniquely Austin, but sloppily random Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-in? or the typical no-outside-drinks allowed (beer), too many kids, mall or strip-center movie theater? Well, if you have not been to the Violet Crown Cinema and are having similar thoughts rolling around in your decision making engine you call your head, here are a few tips, points of clarity (and a review in there somewhere) from our experience: TICKETS - buy online and you can choose your seat like on an airplane (not Southwest style). This will be a welcome tip for some Alamo-goers who insist on coming late AND complaining they can't get a seat together. You know who you are!! PARKING - complementary valet for ticket holders. Not advertised well, but take advantage of the opportunity! You can text the valet and finish your drink while he gets your car. Cool, but may not last long. I spoke to the valet about the system and they don't care for it much. Think drunk-tart and dude-where's-my car and whether or not you want them to be texting you for their car! FOOD/DRINK - typical movie snacks you can buy at a snack-bar, come early to order food and drinks in their bar/lounge area or order and take your food into the theater with you. Full bar with good cocktails, decent wine and beer selection and happy-hour deals. Prices are average for movie food and drinks downtown. Food is hit-or-miss. We had the Ginger Pork Tapas (recommended) and the Margherita Pizza (have had much better). Eat before you come if you are picky. But you can find something satisfying there if you are running short on time. WAITER SERVICE - none in the theater! Makes getting another drink impossible. Plates, trays and glasses not bussed during the show so watch your step on your way out or if you have to leave to get another drink. Order food before you go in and they will give you a pager to let you know when your food is ready. Good luck getting there and back though. SEATS - a little "less" than expected. Less everything! Less room, less comfortable, less tray-space, less and less! I was not expecting Gold Class, but for the added price and metro style I was thinking there would be more room and comfort not less. AND if eating in the dark is not hard enough, the side-tray's are hard to set-up (when also balancing your plastic lunch tray of semi-gourmet vittles) and precariously small. VIP SEATS - no real VIP or Premium seating. But, 5-min before the show a few couches open up in the front row first-come-first serve. Only if they are not being used for wheel-chair access though. Wait at the ticket stand and they will swap your ticket if the seats are available. YOUR TAB - this is nice! Order food, drinks, snacks or whatever and you can add it all to your same tab regardless of where or who you order it from. And, pay on your way out when the move is over. That makes it easier. PRICE - not bad, but not good for what you get and for the experience. The $3 above the Alamo's price of $10/ticket is negligible and should not make you think. This is no $19 for a iPic/GoldClass seat ($29 for Premium) but the seats and food are much better at the Alamo or GoldClass. If you live downtown then convenience will increase the value for you. If you don't want to go to a movie with kids then increase the value. If you don't want to eat or don't like their food then decrease the value. If you like to have a few drinks and are accustomed to waiter service then decrease the value. $10 - Alamo Drafthouse $10 - Fandango, Regal, AMC $13 - Violet Crown $19 - iPic/GoldClass ($29 Premium) SMELL - ok, it stinks! I thought a few Yelpers were just being picky, but oh Yes! there is a distinct and persistent smell in the lobby/bar area. Not foul, not caustic, but just weird.

I saw my first movie there this weekend. The food was quite good. We shared a bratwurst and some pork tapas. The seating is comfortable and I thought the surround sound was excellent. I wasn't crazy about the movie we saw "Beasts of the Southern Wild", however I've seen worse. With movie, dinner, drinks and a snack it came to over $50, but was a nice afternoon experience.

I feel like Tom Hanks in "Big", raising my hand hesitantly to a harsh crowd when I say "Um, I don't get it." I mean I know what they're *trying* to do here, but it's awkward at best, tending toward frustrating. We are all spoiled living in Austin to thinking we can have food and drink with our movies. If I can't see something at the Alamo, I wait and watch it pay-per-view at home. On my couch. With food and drink. So when my girlfriends suggested we try this theater for my hubbie's bday celebration, I eagerly agreed. I'd been wanting to check this place out for awhile. The confusion and chaos is partially our fault. I had read the website and their menu and had planned to get our party of 11 to the cinema 30 minutes in advance of showtime to get drinks and snacks (I will reiterate what others have said, there is no wait staff in the theater. Anything you want, you have to bring in or go get). However, getting 11 tipsy people to walk from Peche to VC is like herding a crew of catnip tweaked kittens. We ended up stumbling in about 15 minutes early, just enough time to hurry a drink from the harried bartenders and walk in. Now here's where I applaud the online ordering system that lets you pick your seats and just waltz into the theater where an usher will point out your place (btw, the ONLY empty 11 seats when we walked in 2 minutes late). And I want to say also that this is an amazing theater! Cozy with maybe 50 seats and 5 rows tops. Little side tables to swing out like a school desk for your beverage. The sound and video were perfect. So, a perfect place to view an arthouse movie, if that's all you wanna do. Unfortunately for me, my wine glass was empty 30 minutes later and hubby's Jack n coke was not only empty but he was crunching ice in my ear for 15 minutes. And as my stomach began to rumble, all I kept thinking about was "Prosciutto pizzaaaaa, prosciuttoooo pizzaaaaaa". I even gathered my empty glass and my phone/credit card and plotted a strategy on how to grab hubby's glass, walk over some people, not fall down the steps and maneuver out for a food and drink run. Even if I made it out and ordered a pizza, I would either have to wait out in the lobby for 30 minutes for it to be ready, or head back in with a pager and then maneuver out again for the pizza. I spent 30 minutes obsessing about that and missed a good portion of the Lindbergh kidnapping because of it, until I just gave up. Maybe the movie "J Edgar" wasn't riveting enough, but I was distracted throughout, first by the few people that did have to go get their food when their pagers went off and then by those that were eating nearby. It's a tiny theater. Everything is a distraction (even my friend snoring within the first 5 minutes....did I mention this film was slow?). Maybe I just need to rethink my reasons for going to the movies. It's not about food and dinner, it's about seeing a cinematic wonder in a great, albeit distracting, setting. And for most film nuts, this is definitely a great place for that. Maybe next time, I'll take Joe's advice and sit in the front row where I can go in and out at will, or be sure and eat before I come. Or maybe I'll just stick to what I usually do, watching pirated, er, pay per view on my comfy couch with my glass of wine and a steak, and the only distractions are my hairy, slobbery monster dogs mooching. Hard to top that.

Have you ever been sitting in economy class on an airplane with a busted a/c whilst stuck on the tarmac for two hours and thought to yourself, "I'd really love to experience a sensation like this again"? Then do I have the theater for you! It's expensive, it's cramped, it's hot, it's stuffy, there's no leg room, the seats are wildly uncomfortable, people arrive late and talk and text at inappropriate times, if the theater next to you is showing a movie with any bass sounds at all you can hear it clearly, and you begin and end your journey in a room featuring a lounge with overpriced food and beverages. The only difference between seeing a movie here and air travel is that you can keep your shoes on and the parking is free. My husband and I left here feeling like we needed a stiff drink and chiropractic adjustments. When is the South Lamar Drafthouse going to be up and running again?

I expected the Violet Crown Cinema to be stuffy, overpriced and a Drafthouse ripoff, but it was anything but. I noticed a few differences between Alamo and Violet Crown. At VC, you order your food or beverages and carry them into the theater. The food selection is a bit smaller at Violet Crown, but it still holds its own in the quality category. The beer and wine selection definitely rivals that of Alamo. There are no servers at VC, but you're welcome to get up if you need anything. There's enough room for you to walk down each aisle without disrupting your neighbors. The most fantastic parts of VC: -The recliner-style chairs are the most comfortable seats in the city -The fold-out trays that come across your lap eliminate the reaching motion you have to make at the Drafthouse -Each theater is strategically padded in order to provide the best audio experience to each viewer -A ticket is only $2 more than the Drafthouse I tend to go to Alamo Drafthouse more often than Violet Crown, but both are great in their own ways. Violet Crown is my preference for a more sound-driven film (or if there are lots of quiet parts because each theater seems to be soundproofed). I highly recommend VC for a date or a plush, easy movie-watching experience.

My husband and I love this place. Always great films coming through. The seats are a huge deal, they are great, super comfortable and a bit oversized which I love. The food and bar is great here too. Anything from Topo to pizza. Such a great spot

Just saw American Hustle here...first time in the theater---it was really nice. I loved the size of the theater--screen 4--super cozy. Chairs were comfy--I felt like there was plenty of room and it was like sitting at home w/friends. One of my friends had a cocktail and said it was awful---I actually didn't have anything there, but they have free refills on the popcorn, which was tasty. Also, if you save your movie ticket, you can park in the parking lot for free for up to 4 hours!!! That totally rocks! I would definitely come here again---not too often since I'm in Pville---but I would definitely not say no.

I never go to move theaters. Like maybe twice a year. But this is the type of place I can get behind. There's something cool about the fact that it's a bar/lounge/theater that's all cohesive. I like that I can drink a cocktail at the bar and then bring it into the theater if I don't finish it on time. I like ordering my food and being able to eat a meal in front of the screen. I will admit, the tables could be a bit easier to use and it would be nice if someone bussed your plates and glasses out of the way when you're done. But hey, nothing is perfect! The seats are comfortable, video and sound quality is fine and I can't wait to sit in the front row on the lounge chairs! The Mediterranean plate was nice to share and the pulled pork sliders were quite tasty, although not what I expected. Now , the Bloody Mary with a shot if fernet on top... That's something you will have to come and try yourself.

So so so sad to have to do this... They have the best selection of movies and this is the theater closest to me, but this was one the worst experiences I've had in customer service. So my friend and I book our tickets when we are both at work and rush home after a busy day to make the show at 7. We get there a little after 6:35 and put in our order. They usually make a great Pork Bahn Mi, so I ordered my usual and she ordered her usual spring rolls. We sit down and patiently wait for our food. On the long end it's taken 20 minutes, so I think we've got plenty of time. 7pm rolls around. We check on the food. Nothing. We go into the theatre and sit down and I come back out to check (we also have a pager). The people sitting next to us were at the end of our line when we ordered and they have their food (there were about 6 in their party) So the guy at the counter says- it'll be 10 minutes at 7:05. 7:15 and nothing. My friend leaves the movie at 7:20 (we are starving) and they say it'll be 10 minutes. The same guy every time... With an annoyed look... So, at 7:30 our pager goes off, I take one for the team, and head out to gather our food. I go up to the counter, trying to get it done as quickly as possible. The guy is just standing there. I have my pager that is vibrating and lighting up. I have to get his attention and he makes me re-describe my order and then hands me one plate. I re-emphasize that there was an order of spring rolls, as well, and he rolls his eyes and casually says "oh, we are out of spring rolls..." At that moment, I'm running through my head the fact that two women sitting next to me both got spring rolls and they were deep behind us in line when they ordered their food. They got it before the movie started... Now, I'm not a cop or a lie detector, and it blows my mind that someone would blatantly lie to cover up an error, but I guess Violet Crown takes all sorts. So, I'm trying to figure out, after having my friend and I having missed so much of the movie, that I get to go back in to the movie theater and talk over the dialogue to try to explain to her that she doesn't get dinner. I tell him this is not cool and I can't just go back to my friend empty handed and he says she can get a free popcorn, which is a joke, right? I stand there pleading with him to try to find an alternative and he crosses his arms and stands up straighter. I finally give up and ask the girl at the ticket counter for a manager. 10 minutes later, after missing so much of the movie I'm thoroughly lost when I re-enter, he says to come out at the end of the movie and we can get a refund. We come out and he apologizes to my friend (who deserves an apology) and hand her two free tickets, meal and drink vouchers. I'm standing right next to her. She didn't get dinner, but I missed, at least, 25 minutes of the movie. She got everything comp-ed and I got a really terrible experience. What miserable night. I never realized how much you take your whole night into your own hands when you just trust that dinner will actually come when you order it. At Violet Crown, this is optional, I guess? I've also come to the conclusion that they do not care if you actually see the movie that you paid to see.

Is this real life? This may have been the best movie experience ever. Who'd have thought I'd have so much fun for a Thursday afternoon Wes Anderson featured matinee? Stellar service compliments of Oden. He was running his butt off between the bar area and the snack bar and managed it like a champ. It was a slow time of day, but it was still busy for one person to manage, but he did it with a smile and awesome suggestion in his back pocket. The food, though. That's the amazing part. The boyfriend claims it was the best Chicago Dog he's ever had in his life. I had a bite. It near changed mine. I had the veggie pizza. Also amazing, but I wish I could have enjoyed a whole Chicago Dog for myself. I was impressed because their ticket prices mirror those of the regular cinemas and the drink/food menu is fair. Its no different than getting dinner a drinks before the movie, though you're all in the same place. The decor is also adorable. I noted the clever purple under mount lighting in the bar to tie in the Violet part. Everything's in the details! Though Alamo DH is closer to us, we will happily take the longer walk to Violet Crown every time to see a movie.

I'm a pretty big fan of this place. Since the drafthouse on S Lamar is still missing, my buddy and I decided to give Violet Crown a go. I'm really happy we did. They validate parking (yessssss) and their bar is a really cool spot to hang out in before or after the movie. They have a lot of fancy cocktails, and well, I thoroughly enjoy fancy cocktails. I really want to try their seats in the front row. They are like lazy boys and look amazing. If you are reserving your seat online and they are available, I recommend going for it. Really, I think this place is pretty swell. My one and only complaint is that there is only one way to your seats, so if you're up against the wall and you have to get up during the movie, you have to climb over the entire row and it's a pretty snug fit so it's kind of awkward. Getting your food or using the bathroom before the movie is probably a good idea, unless you're close to the aisle. Pretty awesome movie theater, definitely better than your run-of-the-mill regal and tinseltowns out there.

Have to give big thumbs up to the GM at Violet. He read my review and responded immediately. We were not looking for anything free but he offered some comp tickets to a show. Classy. Asked when, where, why with our negative experience and sounded like he was going to find out what's what. Good for him. I'd hire him personally......

Best place to catch indie films in Austin! Definitely not iPic, but nicest theatre downtown! Get there early for appetizers and drinks before you head in the theatre or you can take them in. There's not as much space to relax, eat and watch the movie as other dine in theaters but the location can't be beat!

I like this place! The movies that are selected for showing are the best in town and the food is high quality with some healthy options. I like to eat before I go in the theater as it can be tight, but the lounge is comfortable so I am more than happy to do this!

Great theater! love the smaller theaters and awesome seating. reasonably priced concession...love that they have good iced tea and popcorn that looks home made versus a chemical thing. haven't eaten a full meal but nice to know it's there. easy parking in garage. love that they get unusual selection (read art house)

Sorry, VC. I had a good experience the first time I visited you. Although, too much red wine + packed theater + "Pina" = sleeeepy. Not exactly your fault though air circulation should be a top priority for a packed house. I digress. It's nice to have another "downtown-y vibe" option other than Alamo. The people were pretty nice. The bar is cute. Lots of eye candy everywhere. Oh, how you disappointed me on my next visit though! I understand that computer glitches happen. I get it. But on Xmas day?? After getting our tix printed, waiting for the usher man to SCREAM that the movie was seating (ruined the nice relaxed lounge vibe? - YESSSS!), and then having the usher man actually point our seats out ......the inevitably awkward moment that makes me HATE the reserved seating ticket operation: *sitting for 3 minutes or so and awaiting the film's start* SCREAMING:"Um, I need to see your tickets down there!" Bahhhh, here we go. So we get up. Turns out, our tix were for the following day. Not to sound uppity or arrogant, but I have a master's in media and the staff treated me like I was an idiot and purposely showed up for the wrong day. There was another group who had the exact same thing happen and that was only for one movie out of the whole day. So, okay, mistakes happen. But this is what KILLS me, my yelp friends. The manager does not even greet us. No happy holidays, no smile, no nothing. Instead, we wait 5 minutes for her to come out and give us this look like "I don't want to deal with this, but what??" This is your job. Having been a manager, I get that it sucks, sure, but at least be cordial if not nice. It's your job! After she questioned me about "anything having gone wrong" during my purchase online, and me saying "no", and her looking like I wasn't telling her some deep dark secret, we waited another few minutes and got passes for another show for some day in the future. (I'm looking forward to that now - NOT --and while I'm in parentheses, people, seating 5 mins before the film? Really? Why so little time? Where's the preshow? Damn, Alamo has spoiled me). I was fine with all that because I - seriously - am too nice for my own good. But later, my husband pointed out the fact that the manager should have that long, oddly accusatory IT conversation with, I dunnoo....the IT guy perhaps -?? Instead of the customers!!! I mean, common sense, folks. Happy holidays, VC! I got my refund but I did not get any niceties or decency. Not cool. Not cool at all. (and I saw my movie at the overcrowded Regal so there!)

This is a nice place, but it's hard to compete with Alamo Drafthouse. They do screen films that most other cinemas don't, and for that the bar is a definite bonus. I wasn't impressed with their theater seating arrangement - the chairs aren't that comfortable and the people next to us sprawled all over my personal space. They shouldn't even have that option when I'm paying a premium price for a film that no one else in town is screening. For as wonderfully as the rest of the place was decorated and laid out, the bathrooms left a lot to be desired - poorly-lit, old and dingy. At the end of the day, I enjoyed my Live Oak and my visit to Violet Crown, but Alamo Drafhouse will remain my ol' standby.

I've been meaning to write a review for this incredible place for a while now. What spurred me to do it is the fact that I was given two free movie tickets yesterday for being a frequent customer! It was a complete surprise. I just went up to the counter to buy two tickets to The Artist and he said "It's on us." Since when does that happen?! Aside from that, the place is really unlike any other theater experience in Austin. It's clean, shows interesting (usually not mainstream) movies, has friendly staff, and super comfortable seats. The recliner seats with the ottomans in the front are the best. It's sometimes hard to book them, but if you show up about 15 minutes prior to the show, you might have a chance to get them. Those are my favorite seats; I really don't think they're too close to the screen. Then again, I sat in the back row yesterday and those seats were great too. The food/drink selection is pretty expansive for a movie theater. They have a fun candy and soda (and Icee) selection, along with a thorough beer and wine menu, and standard movie food like popcorn, but also more fancy foods, like pork tapas. I believe they also have free refills on popcorn and sodas, if you're up for consuming too much sugar and salt. Violet Crown rocks and I'll continue to go there on a regular basis.

Violet Crown is a great place to catch a movie. I like that you they offer drinks/cocktails and food, which you can eat outside or take into the movie with you. The seats are also assigned so that way you know exactly where you are seated. There is no need to find or reserve seats. An added plus is that the seats in the front row are lounge type seats where you can have your legs up!

It might just be love. I could go on about how coooool violet crown is, or how I want to be a violet crown groupie and just hang out in their lobby, but you're just going to have to check it out for yourself. Here are my top reasons VC is AWESOME: 1. Variety! - Independent films and your standard movie fare 2. Happy Hour! - Get yo' self there from 5-7, and grab a beverage! 3. Free parking! 4. Comfy chairs and small theaters! - If this movie wasn't so awesome, I could sleep! 5. No online surcharge! Save them monies! Next time your girlfriend wants to see some lovey dovey chick flick, or your boyfriend actually thinks you will enjoy an obscure French horror film, head on down to the violet crown!

The Makings of a Delightfully Austin Date: Part 1 - The Dovie (Dinner + Movie) After throwing a bet like a corrupt boxer, I was "forced" to take an attractive female to see the new Anne Hathaway movie, One Day. Or at least I was supposed to. Then I saw that it received a 25% approval rating on rottentomatoes.com . (That's less than Conan the Barbarian!) As someone who values his time and dime, I refuse to see a movie that receives such a horrific "Cream-of-the-Crop" score, no matter how cute my companion may be. But I "lost" the bet? How was I going to get out of seeing this guaranteed-to-be-shitty movie, while honoring the wager I slyly contrived? In the words of Don Corleone, "I'm going to make (her) an offer (she) can't refuse." You know the old CEO adage, "Don't bring me a problem unless you have three solutions?" That's just what I did (in the form of hyperlinks). Link one was the aforementioned critical consensus. "What are you telling me this for?" she asked, sensing my ulterior motives. I was telling her for links two through four, which led to movies currently screening at Violet Crown Cinema. I waited with baited breath to see if I had weaseled my way out of a waste of time and money. SUCCESS! I don't know if it was the tasteful layout of the Violet Crown website (she's into that sorta thing) or my obvious disinterest in watching Hathaway fain a British accent for a couple of hours, but my agreeable accomplice granted my wish. I immediately hopped online and reserved two seats to see a quirky, indie, dramedy entitled, The Future. Unlike Fandango and other ticket reservation sites, you pick your seats in advance, airline style. One star of this review is entirely attributed to the peace of mind you gain from knowing exactly where you'll be sitting, regardless of when you arrive. When date day rolled around I decided it would be in our best interest to walk from my apartment (which is less than a mile away across Town Lake) as opposed to playing hide and seek with downtown parking spaces. I reached this conclusion by envisioning a romantically moonlit stroll across Austin's most breathtaking body of water. However, I forgot to take into account the fact that it's still hot as balls at 7PM. After sweating our way across the S 1st St. Bridge, we arrived at Violet Crown Cinema with plenty of time to dry off in the AC and enjoy a couple of drinks. I ordered the Ginger Caipirinha once the waiter assured me it wasn't going to show up in an effeminate glass. The lady ordered the Paloma. My mojito-like beverage fell short of her tequila and grapefruit concoction, but both drinks were flavorful and COLD enough to refresh us after our perspiration promenade. Although the drinks were kind of, "Meh," the eats were mucho bueno. Due to the lady's stereotypical indifference towards our menu selections (Ugh, women.) I decided we'd share the Ginger Pork Tapas and Margherita Pizza. The pizza wasn't mind blowing, but it served its purpose. The tapas, on the other hand, were excellent. The garlic honey soy sauce, smoked pork and mozzarella made a delicious ménage a trois on top of the crispy baguette. Fortunately for me, the lady exhibited another cliché, the inability to eat her fair share of the food. (YAY, women!) While waiting to hear the usher announce, "We are now seating for The Future," (which earned a pair of childish chuckles) we observed our surroundings. The interior was renovated in the same modish style you'd find in a Manhattan high rise. The actual screening room was small, yet cozy, and radiated a vibe of exclusivity. I imagine Roger Ebert watches movies in a room like this. A little over ninety minutes later we made our way back through the lobby, down the purple LED lit stairs and out into the hustle and bustle of a Friday evening in downtown Austin, equally satisfied with the evening thus far. Tune in tomorrow for The Makings of a Delightfully Austin Date: Part 2 - The Dressert (Drinks + Dessert).

Ok, first off, I carry a lot of baggage when I go to the movies. I'm a die-hard lover of the old Alamo on 12th and Colorado...which has blessed me with great memories of all you can eat spaghetti western nights and Tarantino festivals with awful movies. I am also cursed with comparing every cinema I go to with my beloved memories...which does not usually bode well for any experience. Enter Violet Crown. First thing I noticed, cool movies in the theater! Seriously, not your run of the mill stuff...which reminds me of the good ole days.. This place has HAPPY HOUR?! YES! $3 Pecan Porters and Firemans drafts to name a few? SIGN ME THE FUCK UP! How refreshing...not being boned any time you want a beer at a theater...haven't seen that in a while *cough Drafthouse, cough* Food wise, rocked some fries and one of their pizzas. The pizza was 9-10 clams...better than D-house again since last I was there and the same size and WAY better taste. Fries came with a great mayo dipping sauce which tickled the European stooge in me. Theater wise, I watched a documentary with lots of talky talky, but the way the sound system directed all that weeny sound...I can just imagine the wonders it does with explosions and testosterone bulging movies. I could go into more details about how much better this place is compared to what the Drafthouse is and has become...but please, don't let me spoil it. Go for an early show, enjoy the cheap drafts and check it out for yourself

There's not a bad seat in the house, because you choose your seats when ordering your tickets. The theater is small which is nice if you do not like large crowds like myself. But you should get there at least 30 min early to order because there is NO wait staff in the theater....Plus the tiny tables are hard to manage if you order more than one thing. The food is reasonable and the drinks are over priced. On the bright side they have 4 hours of validated parking and I do love Indie films. I will be back for the better than "blockbuster" films!!!

Okay, I simply loved this place. I am giving them some leeway because the order process isn't clear, and they should explain it to you better. When I ordered my hotdog, they handed me one of those buzzer things that is normally used to alert you that your table is ready, but they just turned around and walked away. Do I come back up to the window to pick up my food, or do I pick it up somewhere else? And then you have to order your drinks separately (if you're having something alcoholic). It seems like I'm complaining, but I'm really just pointing out some service issues. I loved the actual theater. Great projection and sound, comfortable seats that have a little fold away table that you can use if you wish. My margarita was delicious. I think they used agave nectar as the sweetener. The seats are not in the relation to the screen that is indicated on the website where you choose your seat. If you choose seats that look like they are dead center on the screen, they are actually about two seats left of center (not a big deal, but each row only has about 8 seats total, so if you prefer to sit center, you will want seats 3 and 4, or maybe 1 and 2 (next to the aisle). All in all, a great addition to Austin's downtown.

Last night, I went to the Violet Crown Cinema to see the new Woody Allen movie. I purchased tickets online and chose my seats with trepidation. Could I really cheat on the Alamo Drafthouse?! Indeed, I cheated and it was worth the anxiety of possibly breaking a five year relationship. I loved choosing my seats before the show, this meant I didn't have to cue or worry that I may not get to sit with my party. This meant I didn't have to cue!!! One thing that gets me about the Alamo Drafthouse is the unrelenting need of the crowd to cue 45 minutes before the show. I'd much rather sit at a table at the Violet Crowne drinking my $4 dollar ice coffee (with free refills) and file into the theatre five minutes before show time. Although, I will mention, the cuts before the Alamo Drafthouse as well as their beat ass attitude were missed. I need to stop comparing the experiences and appreciate each for its individual appeal. There is more. The theater is intimate and comfortable, I felt as though I had a shared experience with 40 of my closest friends. The front row has ottomans to prop your feet, the screen is crisp, and the volume perfect. I'm happy to have found this theatre after disappointingly finding out my only movie choices were comic book action or teenaged comedy. Violet Crown, I love you.

It's no Alamo Drafthouse, that's for sure. The whole reserved seating thing sucks. I called ahead to make sure that I was sitting on an aisle (I hate climbing over people and get a little freaked out being on the wall), and the girl that I spoke to on the phone gave me the wrong information so I ended up sitting right up against a wall anyway. Some girl broke a glass on the floor about ten minutes before the movie started, but the usher guy left the broken glass there to get cleaned up after the show instead of taking 2 seconds and sweeping it up. It IS summer and everybody is wearing sandals. I just thought that seemed a little unsafe. The popcorn is tiny and costs $6. The soda's are also small and are $4. You can get refills, but you have to leave during the movie to get them (and climb over people just to get out if you didn't happen to reserve the proper seats...). At least in a big megatheater you spend $6 and you get a whole bucket of popcorn and a gallon of soda. But they do have a fantastic selection of Maine Root sodas and Dublin Dr Pepper on tap. And they don't ever fully turn the lights off in the theater, which really pissed my boyfriend off. All in all, it's an okay theater to go to ONLY if you can't see the same film at Alamo. It's nice and fancy and the people who work there are really sweet, but it's overpriced and kind of inconvenient and I guess I just didn't have a very good time. Oh, but the bathrooms are very clean, which I appreciate.

Still love this place, but taking one star away because they don't get mainstream movies. Yeah yeah yeah, all those artsy indie movies are cool and all, but I wish VCC could get the blockbusters also. I have wanted to go back to VCC several times but just couldn't find a movie I wanted to watch so had to go to Alamo or Regal. You are losing business VCC!

Yes, I will return. Saw a matinee, loved the validated parking (free for 4 hours), good and friendly service too. Amazing screen resolution! What would help is keeping the theatres from freezing temps. PLEASE! Its no fun turn into a popsicle for 1.5 hours. I had to put on socks, a beanie, a hoodie and a scarf when it was 82 degrees outside temp.

I never thought I'd ever step foot in Violet Crown, as it seemed like a frou frou version of Alamo Drafthouse. However, they were the only theater playing "Sleepwalk With Me," which my boyfriend wanted to go see. We arrived there about the same time as the showtime listed on the website (in true procrastinator fashion) but there were still seats left. If you did not purchase your ticket online, you buy them at the coffee bar, which is sort of confusing. However, you get to pick your seats, which is pretty cool. They start the movie promptly about 10 min after the listed showtime, and if you are not in your seat already, good luck trying to find it. It is very dark and they don't have house lights. The seats are leather and recline to a certain degree, and each seat has a flip up table. Props. I liked that Violet Crown has free valet as well as validation for the AMLI parking garage. Also, the movies they show are the indie movies you won't find elsewhere.

The only real "independent" theater in town gets a thumbs up from me. (No offense Drafthouse, I love you too, but I wish you'd devote at least one of your locations to serving up exclusively arthouse/retro/independent/doc. programming.) I wanted to get beer -- nice-looking bar with some good deals -- but realized I was falling asleep, so my boyfriend and I figured we'd get some coffee to perk us up before taking in a film. Delicious Americano and espresso here, and we loved the Dublin Dr. Pepper. The popcorn was pretty cold but overall not bad. Love the ambiance of the place... very sleek, modern look inside, with cozy seating for a pre-movie snack, and a nice patio overlooking the street outside. The theaters themselves are really nice, and after learning the hard way to show up to the Drafthouse super early (or sit in the front row), I appreciate the reserved seating. Also, this is the only theater where I would recommend sitting in the front row (recliners, foot rests!); we sat on the end somewhere in the middle, and had a perfect view, too. Great picture quality and, contrary to prior reviews of this place, the audience wasn't annoying and they didn't leave the lights on throughout the film. I'll be back again soon.

The movie theater itself was pretty decent. I liked that it was a small theater, but hated the assigned seating. I think ticket prices were a bit high as well. As for the food, it was over priced for what you get. I got the Mediterranean plate and friends got a couple of pizzas. I was told the pizzas were okay, but small. The Mediterranean plate left much to be desired. The fattoush salad was basically just mixed greens with dressing and feta on top. You got tiny amounts of hummus and baba ganoush (like the amount of ketchup they give you at a restaurant) and ONE falafel. There was also about 4 green olives. It was definitely a very SMALL plate. Also, I asked about dairy in dishes since I'm lactose intolerant and was told that the veggie wrap is pre-made...and my "fattoush" salad still came with feta on top. Their beer selection is also pretty meh. I highly suggest eating before hand (or hiding snacks in your purse) and hitting up the matinee for cheaper tickets. At least there's somewhere to go for decent movies.

What a nearly perfect little art house theater! We saw the best Woody Allen film since Match Point here yesterday and were overall very pleased with the ease of parking and the seating and presentation. The theaters are small and intimate, but the screen size to theater size is a perfect ratio. Best in Austin besides the IMAX maybe. I was put off by a couple of things. Not going to take away stars since they are new and working out the bugs. When we walked in to buy tickets, the guy was on the phone explaining the process to someone. Not sure why another person couldn't have been doing that rather than the guy at the box office. They seemed short handed. I inquired about food and drinks. and was told their bartender who takes care of that was late. Wow. Money left on the table . . . or actually in my pocket for Violet Crown Cinema. How Do You Roll is downstairs so that took care of the lunch problem. And I had to get a $5 Wonka Bar later. No Golden Ticket. The bar looks nice. An older Jimmy Stewart film was being projected on the wall silently over there. Nice touch. I'd definitely be inclined to go over there and have a few drinks and wait for my showing to start. It looks like the fountain drinks are free refills. Good job on that and they have Dublin Dr. Pepper on the fountain too! Finally, anyone who wants servers in the theater like Alamo needs to return to Alamo. That is the most consistently annoying thing at The Drafthouse. It was nice to watch a perfectly projected film in comfy seats without all the movement around the theater. If Violet Crown changed into that model, I would never set foot in there again. They are currently doing it right!

Free Parking!!! Get parking ticket validated, 4 hours! Best movie selection in town not dirty/sticky no slacker dudes/dudettes slinking in the dark with crap food full bar, happy hour, good beer selection so very NOT Alamo been to four films and it rained after two central location pleasant bar/lounge area to eat pre/post film... tray in theater notso big, may be problematic for peeps above average size, guessing here... front row has recliners and a different setup that I have yet to try, also handicapped accessible

What to say... Really, I just wanted to see "Midnight In Paris" and not at the dank theatre in the mall. Violet Crown was the only other option. I didn't really get into everything the theatre has to offer (arrived late, didn't really know what to expect). I liked: the small viewing room, the comfy seats, the popcorn (yes, the popcorn), the reserved seating, the knowledge that if I had gotten there a bit earlier I coulda had a cocktail or perused the menu and maybe ordered something. I disliked: the odd smell in the lobby and the walk-in freezer that was the viewing room itself. Really?! I'm complaining about how COLD it was? In the middle of August? In TEXAS? Yes. Yes, I am. Just because I don't like it being 105+ degrees outside every single day does not mean I'd like it to be 50 either. I've not yet experienced any other business, theatre, restaurant, market or other establishment being kept that cold. Don't take this the wrong way, I still recommend it, just know before you go. It's cold in there. Next time I'll bring a jacket and probably partake in their non-snack menu.

Violet Crown Cinema strikes a balance between the proletariat sensibilities of Alamo Drafthouse and the bourgeois decadence of Gold Class Cinema. You walk up some stairs to the entrance. Inside to your left is the ticketing area. Ahead is a bar and a movie candy counter. To the right is a dining area. The menu is better than pub fare but below snooty restaurant fare. Since this venue seems to be the sole member of its species, I feel comfortable saying the food is authentic. We ordered some cocktails and some avocado spring rolls. The service was fast, the food was good, and the prices were not outrageous. I suppose you can walk in and get tickets, but we booked ours in advance on their website. Thumbs up to the website; since Violet Crown has reserved seating, the site actually shows you which seats are available. About ten minutes before the movie started, a fellow with a Lyle Lovett haircut walked into the lobby and announced that it was to enter our theater. (We saw "Midnight in Paris", a wonderful movie.) You can take your food into the theater if you want, but unlike the Alamo Drafthouse, you cannot actually order inside the theater. Each theater seats about 40 people. The seats are very comfortable. The screen itself is surprisingly big, and the sound system was fine. We watched a handful of previews, but there were no commercials. (When I am King, commercials shall be banned from all theaters.) I liked this place. It felt trendy without being over the top. I'll still go to the Drafthouse most of the time but I'll definitely visit Violet Crown Cinema again.

My life was changed 18 years ago when I saw "Like Water for Chocolate" at the theatre. I, at the time, was 18; and the beauty of that film made me see there was so much more to cinema than the standard Hollywood paint-by-numbers fare that they churn out. I committed to myself that I'd seek out all films, from all countries that had artistic merit. Yeah, it sounds pretentious because it is and I'm fine with that because I'm down-to-earth in myriad other ways. When I learned this week that Violet Crown Cinema was about to open, I freaked out. I have gotten so tired of Alamo that I only go every now and again (for all the Alamo devotees, I didn't spend anymore here than I would have there). Finally there was a theatre, in my backyard, that shows my favorite type of films. "I'm going to live there!!!" I thought to myself. My experience there this afternoon did NOT disappoint. First of all I know that they say they offer valet, but I'm guessing that must be at a specific time. I'm curious to see when those times are for future reference. The garage parking was easy enough to access and we found a spot right by the entrance so it was a total breeze. We were a bit confused where to go, but quickly figured it out. We knew we wanted to eat so we headed to the cafe. We both got Limelights (soooooo good!!!!) and we also ordered the Spring Rolls (my companion got those), a cheese plate (delicious!!!), and the proscuitto pizza (delicious!!!). Our food was not ready in time so we gave the lady in the cafe our seat info and she brought our food right to us. The cafe was very inviting and I could have easily hung out there for awhile where it not for the film starting. There were a couple previews for the films that are going to be shown there at the theatre and then we went straight into the film, which was was a great one by the way "Certified Copy". I'm so glad this is right around the corner from me, and I look forward to spending many weekend afternoons here. They should have a club for cinephile geeks like me. : )

Love love love!!! Like an upscale Alamo drafthouse in concept, sans stress and hold the pretension. (Not that Alamo is pretentious, but that I was concerned Violet Crown might be.) First you order tickets online. Bonus #1: no surcharge for online purchase. Bonus #2: Reserve your seat in advance. Next you get to the theater and park in the garage below the theater, which is free when you get your ticket validated and is good for four hours. Yay! Super friendly service from the moment we walked in the door. The hostess asked if we had been before, to which we told her no. She explained everything. Order food and drinks in the dining area. Sit and relax before the movie until they begin seating five minutes prior to the show. Feel free to take food/drink into the theater. As you have already reserved seats online, there isn't a mad dash when the theater opens. We took a seat at the bar and got cozy. A marg for boyfriend and Live Oak hefe for me. We also tried the prosciutto pizza, which was delicious. With five minutes until our movie they announced our theater was now seating. Boyfriend ordered another drink to take into the theater, and we leisurely made our way to our seats. Random side note #1: The bathrooms smell ridiculously good. Dear Violet Crown Cinema, what is this scent and where can I buy it? The theater itself is fairly small, but there is a decent amount of leg room, i.e. definitely enough for my five foot threes to stretch out without kicking the seat in front of me. The chairs are comfortable. The fold out tabletop can in fact fit a plate of pizza and two drinks. I might also mention that the movie we saw, Buck, was completely amazing and I'm pretty sure I cried through approximately 62% of the film. Random side note #2: Despite the fact that boyfriend usual ends up paying for movies, I am in fact still totally poor and must take into consideration the prices. $11 for a week day movie, but $13 for a weekend movie. Yikes. Plus the cost of food/drinks. My wallet hurts at the thought.

The location. Awesome. The lounge area. Awesome. The dining area. Awesome. The bar and beer and tap. Awesome. The small theater rooms, comfy seats, extra leg room. Awesome. But it really sucks to have to bring your food into the theater yourself. It's not that I'm lazy. But it's hard to carry a beer, a water, and a plate of food. While you have all that in your hand, you have to pull out the table top to put your food on. I had to make 2 trips. That's was fine, until the lady behind me dropped her drinks and food and spilled some on me. I really enjoyed the movie watching experience there. Great screen, nice sound. I like picking my seats and not have to wait an hour in line too. The place is nice. But I think they have to rethink how they work in the food and drinks into the theater. I almost thought a box would be better than plates, but then that takes away from the ambiance right? Well, they need to think of something...

One of the most amazing theaters I have ever been to. Really I have never seen anything like it, not in NYC, not anywhere. They have a unique selection of films, all of which you can be assured will be great movies. They also have a sexy/chic bar/cafe where you can get food and/or drinks before the movie (you can also bring your food and drinks with you into the theater). Make sure to purchase tickets before hand as it is all reserved seating. Free parking in the AMLI garage and free valet on 2nd street.

I saw "The Cave of Forgotten Dreams" here earlier this week. Great movie and the 3-D worked very well. The ambiance is cool, modern, and more swanky than Alamo Drafthouse, for sure. Good date night place. We arrived early and sampled the drink of the night, a Maker's Manhattan ($5), as well as a couple micro-brews ($4-5). The Manhattan was strong and tasty! We also tried the Mediterranean plate ($10), with a dolmas, hummus, baba ganoush, olives and warm pita, all of which were delish. Not enough to share, however, unless you just want a snack. My friend had the shrimp spring rolls, which he said were tasty but rather limp. Pros: good food, great seats and I like that this is a cinema specifically for independent movies and documentaries. Downtown has needed one for quite awhile. I like the assigned seating so there's no mad rush for the best seats and then making your neighbors move over. Cons: They are still working out the kinks. They need to hire more wait staff to help before the show--it was very busy and they were swamped behind the counter. Also, to have to leave the theater to get another drink or snack deters movie-goers from wanting to purchase another beverage. The TV trays on each seat are good because you don't have to lean forward to see your food but they are also a hindrance if you have to get up for any reason. Tip: the front row seats have ottomans to put your feet up on. How cool is that?!? All in all, I think this theater is going to get great business and will be a favorite place to go once the process gets more stream-lined.

My wife and decided to try it out on a date night. We didn't realize you should advance buy tickets, so about 2 hours before the show, I went on-line and bought them... the only seats left in the house were front row. We thought, oh well, we'll still give it a try. Honestly, front row are the BEST seats in the house. It's like laying on a nice comfortable recliner while you watch the movie. Front row has foot rests and are more reclined then the other rows. I can't speak for the food, we only ordered popcorn since we had just come from dinner... but there is no doubt we'll be bak, and when we do, regardless of how sold out, we'll buy front row again!

This was our first time here, no one greeted us, if it wasnt for the footnote on the menu i woudl have waited to order inside because no one explained everything, beer and food are over prices and food is sub par. very small theaters. the person next to me kept accidentaly touching me.

Just wanted to write a quick update and say that almost immediately after my first review was posted, Bill from Violet Crown reached out to me and asked what technical issues I was having with the website. We had a back-and-forth dialogue and I really appreciated his willingness to hear my complaint and then try to solve my problem. I've still never been to VC, but I appreciate the customer service, and I hope to see a movie there very soon.

Go to the Violet Crown Cinema website to pre-select your seats and pay for the movie. I paid $11 each, think they're $13 on weekends - Cheap & Nice! Parking is directly behind (on the north side) of the theatre. It's in the ALMI parking garage, just drive up the ramp and grab a ticket - Close and Convenient with no parking lot hike! Get your parking ticket validated (4 hours) once your at Violet Crown - Free! Good food and concessions (free soda refills) and a full bar - 2 Sodas and a bag of popcorn $14 - Reasonable! Stadium seating, comfortable chairs with flip up food trays, good sound system, excellent movies (subtitles included) you won't find anywhere else - I'll be back!

Seriously cool place! Apparently this is the place to go for indie films. It's situated in an upscale shopping area near downtown. The decor is very modern. And best of all, they have air conditioning! They have a full bar there, as well as an appetizer menu. I ordered a Mojito (of course, what else?), which was pretty good by my standards. The theaters rooms themselves are not the cavernous sorts you see at big movie theaters. They lend a more cozy exclusive feel. It almost feel like you are attending a private screening. The seats are comfortable, with flip up tray tables to set your drinks and food. I was... gently suggested into seeing Midnight in Paris, which actually turned out to be a great movie contrary to my initial reservations. The sounds is crisp and clear, and the screen is bright without visible blemishes. I would definitely return here for my indie movie needs!

This is how you go to the movies! Pick your seat, grab a $5 pint while you wait, then 5 min before the film starts you are seated in your theater. Seats are comfy, the screen is large (for the ~40person theater), and there isnt a bad seat in the house. Note: Looks like this theater does not play your big budget movies--more your indy/documentary flicks. To me, this is what Dobie should have been, but wasnt.

Love this place - great for indie and art house movies. The theaters are smallish, probably holding around 50 people each. You can also reserve seating when you buy tickets, so no ridiculous lines to wait in. While waiting, you can enjoy a lovely cocktail, draft or bottled beer and several wine options. They have a limited food menu (pizza, salads, apps, etc) that is decent, but not something I'd come here for if I wasn't seeing a movie. The only negative is that there is no wait service in the theater, so you'll need to drag your thirsty ass out for another beer or two during the movie. Comfortable seating, especially the lounge chairs up front. Good sized screens and great sound as well. Tickets are very reasonable at $11 on weekdays and $13 on weekends. Don't worry about coming downtown either - there is a parking garage and they validate with a movie purchase.

My friend and I decided to see a movie for happy hour on Monday. This was the best idea we had in a while. They offer free garage parking, just remember to get your ticket validated. I love that you can choose your seat but I'm not sure there is a bad seat in the house. The bar has a pretty decent happy hour and the staff was all really nice. The only downside was the lack of cup holders. I'm looking forward to the next time!

Excellent! Violet Crown is like Alamo Drafthouse' s sophisticated cousin who left Austin for art school in New York, then came back and opened up shop. Everything that makes this arthouse cinema great is already here in previous reviews. I'd also like to add that the staff were very pleasant. The only downside to this intimate, modern little theater is that it's a bit difficult to find. It's on the second floor, accessible by stairs and elevator from the sidewalk on 2nd street and also connected to the parking garage on the second floor. We parked on the third level, took the garage elevator down to the ground and wandered around the building before finding the cinema.

This is a really nice theater/bar/lounge without any attitude. I really enjoy coming to see new, indie flicks here, grabbing a delicious cocktail or beer, and kicking back on the extremely comfy seats to take it in. It's an intimate setting, there's no people running around delivering food during the movie, and the validated downtown parking can't be beat. My only complaint is that some of the new releases come and go too quickly, before I get a chance to see them at VC!

I checked out Violet Crown today for Austin Film Society's Criterion Collection screening. The new cinema space is beautiful! Located on the second floor of AMLI, you walk in through glass doors into a hip, loungey atmosphere. It is very welcoming and very cool. They have the space designed to grab a drink at the bar and enjoy the comfy lounge before your movie. I did, and tried a cucumber martini (actually, my friend did) and was very disappointed. Very sweet and mushy (can a martini be mushy?). I opted for a straight Bombay Sapphire martini, and it was very well-made. So bravo to that. They didn't have wait service in the theatres so we had to bring drinks from the bar, but I understand this might be coming soon? It didn't really seem like they're set up for that, like Alamo Drafthouse for example, because the rows are close together like a typical theatre. The theatres are small and intimate and set up so that the front row is one of the best seats in the house! They have digital projectors, and as far as I can tell, they can't screen film prints. Maybe one of the theatres can, but not the one I was in. I was also disappointed to find out my screening of The 400 Blows was a DVD. I was more disappointed when the DVD player switched modes (or something?) right before the amazing last scene of the film. Then waited for 10 minutes for someone to figure out how to navigate back to the DVD menu and find our place. I don't know how much of this was Violet Crown's and how much was AFS's fault, but it was certainly disappointing either way. And we weren't offered explanation or anything, except the guy at the door who made a joke about how we probably liked the movie "except that part where you were waiting for 10 minutes." I'm not docking them on stars for the DVD goof because I'm not sure who is to blame, but I do know this is a great new theatre and I look forward to some of their art house and documentary options. Bonus: parking in the AMLI garage (entrance on San Antonio) is validated for customers, so you don't need to battle 2nd Street parking (and possibly miss your movie!) I'm looking forward to going back once they are up and running for real, and I can wait to try some of their delicious-looking menu items! This should be a great new destination for the 2nd Street district.

Hubby and I went here for the first time last night to see "Midnight in Paris" (which was pretty good, by the way, but not quite as good as expected.) Violet Cinema was pretty darn awesome. While the concept is similar to the Alamo Drafthouse, it doesn't have the same quirkiness that I love. Things I liked: 1. The bar scene is cool and they have a great drink menu and much better wine than the Alamo Drafthouse. Yesterday's specials were $5 margaritas--they were tasty too! 2. The bartender lady was very friendly. 3. The hotdog my hubby ordered was pretty good AND hugeeeee! ;) 4. Very clean and nice, sleek decor. 5. The seats are comfy and the theater is small enough where ever seat is excellent. 6. Lots of good snack choices. (They have Now and Later candy which I happen to love and it's so darn hard to find it at most places in town, much less a theater.) 7. STRONG air conditioner! Felt great. Things that could be better: 1. The guy selling the tickets wasn't very friendly, but I won't hold that against him....maybe he was having a bad day. 2. I wish there was food/drink servers in the theater.... would just make it so much easier than having to get up during the movie. I would probably have spent more $ there if there had been servers. All in all this place is a sweet spot to visit and I'll definitely be back.

I just went to this theater for the first time a couple of weeks ago to see "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" in 3D. I think it's a great addition to the downtown options! I sat in the 2nd row, and as a 5'2" person that was a great seat for me as the first row is not on the raised platform (and in fact they have what looked like comfy lounger type seats). For this theater, you select your chosen seat when you purchase your tickets so you know exactly where you'll be. I purchased mine online so no extra waiting was required at the box office. The location is great; right next to Malaga where my friends and I headed for a drink afterwards. I've walked by the theater before but didn't notice it since the entrance is on the 2nd floor. They had a full bar and an eclectic menu with a small seating area in which to gather before the show. Also, the actual movie "snack bar" had some soft drink and candy options you don't see everywhere like "Cheerwine" soda. And you can take your food & drink into the theater; each seat has a little tray available which makes it pleasant to eat and drink during the film without unnecessary awkwardness. I picked up a flier on the way out, and their film choice is also varied which is nice. Upcoming films include mainstream, documentary and indie choices. Bravo!

This place is absolutely incredible! Movies? Check (duh). Bar? Check. The ability to order a cheese plate to eat while watching a movie? Check. I'm pretty sure this is what love at first sight feels like.

So this was just a Sunday of disappointment... First time coming to Violet Crown and gotta say...again, I just don't get it...maybe I just have different standards, but why is this place rated as highly as it is? When we got there I thought it was going to be an Alamo DHouse sitch, but to my surprise, you order your food at the bar and get a pager to notify you when it's ready? Again, might just be me, but if you are going to serve food at a movie theater, either limit that food consumption to your lounge area (the outdoor lounge balcony overlooking 2nd St is actually quite nice w/a gorgeous view) or have servers a la Alamo, but this "pick up your food at the bar and carry it in yourself" business is just awkward, inconvenient, and just downright perplexing! Seriously, carrying in a tray like 5mins before the start of a movie and trying to reach for my pre-purchased movie tix (which u pick up at a different counter) for the guy guarding the theater door, is just a pain in the ass. And the classroom style pullout quasi-tables are super intrusive since you pull them from the armrest of the person to your right, so if you have a beer and a banh-mi sandwich like I did, it is a feat fit for a Cirque du Soleil contortionist to try and get the table up and your stuff on it w/o spilling and/or dropping it! The other annoying part of the "self-serve" set up here is the absolutely annoyance and frustration of the buzzers of latecomers who are getting up to fetch their food orders and coming back, not only obstructing the screen each time they do so, but also either bumping the back of your seat or almost toppling your flimsy semi-table in the process! Adding insult to injury is the bussing of your plates/glass after the screening! Why there is even a tip section on the receipt at the bar is a complete mystery to me since you, rather than the staff here, are working hard for the money! Seriously, after losing half of my bahn-mi sandwich to the floor due to the non-stop onslaught of table and seat bumps, sitting w/the uncomfortable college style table out for the entire movie of 12yrs a Slave was an annoyance along w/being able to hear the garbled vibrations of the theater next to us while trying to not burst into sobs over the emotional turmoil onscreen and off; the whole experience at Violet Crown left me feeling much like Mr. Solomon Northup: wondering what I did to deserve such punishment and why me? Sadly, I do not see myself returning here. For the pricepoint I will endure the subpar food of Alamo than the "Do it Yourself" set up here.

I love this place. The movies are Indie/high-end/atypical stuff and they are always good. They have REALLY good drinks for a movie theater. Hell, for a bar. Comfortable seats. The place is aesthetically pleasing. Just all and all a great place. Get your parking ticket validated for free parking in the parking garage!

I saw Mud here a while back and really enjoyed it. The theatres are very small, as are the screens, when compared to your standard megaplex style theatre, but there are some major pluses. A: You don't get the obnoxious teenagers and loud jerks ruining your movie 2: The seats are such that you can easily see over the row in front of you D: You can get beer and food in the lobby or bring it in the theatre. Now, you don't get waitress service like at the Alamo Drafthouse, but it's still nice to be able to buy a beer and bring it in, and they have some good craft beers on tap. I haven't eaten here so I can't comment on the food quality, but it does sound and look pretty good at least. It's nice to see a movie theatre downtown, and especially one that shows more unique, and indie films. Cool place to catch a film.

I LOOOOOOOVE MOVIES and i love violet crown! you def have to buy tickets in advance but any seat is a good seat - even the very front row (b/c you can recline). they offer refillable sodas and popcorn (yeah!) and their hummus was pretty good. i have yet to try any other there other menu items. the last film i saw there had a glitch and when i complained about it, the manager gave me free passes. great customer service! parking is comp'd if you park in the garage.

My favorite theater of all time. It's the perfect combination of comfortable & classy. For a movie theater, it's as clean as it gets and offers a good selection of alcoholic drinks and desserts. For those hot summer days, the 4 hour validated garage parking is half the incentive to coming here. I can't say enough good things about this theater. Oh and all the movies they pick to show are good.

This is a great movie venue. Incredibly comfortable - way better than the chair in my living room. Each theater is pretty small, but it's because they give you plenty of space in La-Z-Boy type comfort. If it were an airline, it would be first class (on a domestic flight). Nice bar. Great service.

This is an excellent theatre to catch a movie at in Austin. It's small and intimate, and they have a fastastic cocktail list, and even better beer list with lots of great local brews. They are perfectly ok with you bringing your drink/beer into the theatre, so take advantage! We saw American Hustle. I won't let that effect the star rating. (It sucked.) (Ok fine it didn't 'suck,' but it certainly didn't live up to the hype.) (I mean, it never really got going, you know? It was just ... slow. Like come on, something happen!) (Oh man here we go Robert DeNiro just came on the screen. I call him Bobby D.) (Hmmmmm I should change that. What if he's in a movie with Robert Duvall?) (Kinda crazy I made this connection since they were both in Godfather II, right?) (Though never on the screen together. Different time periods.) (Ahhh damnit where's Bobby D. going?) (DeNiro, not Duvall.) (Ugh this movie is slow again.) (But you know what ... Christian Bale put on, like, 40 pounds for the role. Hats off to him. That hasn't been done since Bobby D.) (Bobby D. being DeNiro in Raging Bull. Whoa. I just made another connection.) (Hey wasn't this a review about a theatre?) 10/365

My favorite place to see a movie. I always book the front row those chairs are so comfy. Just be aware if you book a handicapped seat in the front row you could be asked to move if they need it. The free parking here is the big perk for me. I can leave my house 15 minutes before the movie starts knowing I have an assigned seat and a place to park. I usually never eat here the food is way to expensive and not really that good, although the brussell sprouts are quite tasty. I do find it quite irritating that you have to bus your glasses and plates yourself. For what they charge I think they can afford to hire someone. This place is becoming quite popular so if you are dying to go book ahead they sell out a lot.

Violet Crown has been a slow-building relationship. At first I wasn't sure, because there was Alamo Drafthouse and we have a long-term thing going: singalongs, quote-alongs, drunk-alongs. But VC has found a different kind of place in my heart. Some things I remember watching at Violet Crown: -- Amour (the French film that won for best foreign film at the Oscars and required therapy) -- The Way Way Back (therapy, again) -- Ain't Them Bodies Saints (heartbreak) -- I'm So Excited (I was excited) -- The Spectacular Now (wow) -- Somm (drank) Movies I want to see at Violet Crown: -- The other ones They have fancy adult drinks, and I mean fancy to the point that I get this bourbon drink, the Sissy Lynn, and it's shockingly delicious to a person who does not drink bourbon (me). The Mediterranean plate is phenomenal, but the food otherwise strikes me as pricey for what you get, especially the pizzas. You'd be better off brunching or happy houring elsewhere beforehand. The seats are awesomely cozy, though one movie companion referred to the pull-out food tray as too "cafeteria style" for his taste. I agree. But having your seats reserved prior to the film, and 4 hours of validated free garage parking *downtown* (post-shopping boutique sales racks on 2nd, honey-child), makes me feel pretty special. Maybe Alamo Drafthouse is like the fun, witty, perfectly-flawed guy whose clothes you want to rip off, and Violet Crown is the reserved, sophisticated, older gentleman who imparts wordly wisdom while you share cognac and snazzy snacks while everyone keeps their clothes on. Sometimes you gotta mix it up.

Last time I went to Violet Crown Cinema I complained about an annoying carpark wait. I really appreciated that a manager read my review and apologised for the inconvenience and explained that my experience was a one-off (someone had crashed into the boom gate or something???) Anyhow, second visit to VCC was a great success! No parking issues, which was really the only thing that detracted from my previous experience. VCC is great for date night - a cute cinema, a nice, cozy bar, and a snack bar that serves pretty decent espresso coffee. So my message to the masses is - go! But, make sure you pre-book your tickets online because sessions sell out, especially on Friday nights and weekends.

When you go to Violet, it's almost like going to a really fancy and good home theater at your tasteful, rich, urban college roommate's pad. As far as a theater goes, the seats are comfortable and the viewing is impeccable. The colors and contrast are amazing and the sound is good. I'd guess that it is hard to get that wrong on a small screen. But they do a great job. It was a bit amusing, however, when they started the WRONG MOVIE. We went to see American Hustle and got to see the first minute of Nebraska as a bonus. Do not confuse this place with the theater that serves you while you watch. No, you order your rather limited selection of small plates and drinks in the attractive lobby and then bring whatever you want into the theater. The waitstaff is friendly. And it's great that parking is validated. A nice way to watch.

Whereas Alamo Drafthouse can be best described as "Dinner and a Movie," Violet Crown is designed to be a one-stop shop for "Dinner and THEN a movie." When buying tickets ($13 each/$9 matinee), there's a casual note at the bottom of the ticket stub advising the buyer to arrive an hour early to "enjoy the menu and some cocktails." My girlfriend and I arrived about 15 minutes before our movie (our bad), and were worried about not being able to get any food. But we zeroed in pretty quickly and the service was quick. We were told it was OK to bring our food and cocktails into the theater. When in the theater, there were no tables to set our plates on. Because it was unclear what we were supposed to do with our finished plates, we noticed a lot of viewers just putting their plates under their seats. I carried ours until we found a bus tub. The food was all right, with high price points. I enjoyed my pork tapas, while my girlfriend's tiny chicken tahini pizza was two-dimensionally bacon-y. We would have liked water halfway through the movie, but didn't want to leave to get it. I think the idea and design is nice. The space is super slick, but our expectations weren't clearly laid out by VC. We didn't know what to expect and because of it, the experience suffered a bit. Part of it was our fault, but I just don't think the concept is great. I prefer the Alamo model, and I think most people would.

Yeehaw, y'all! I had the Margot Tenenbaum cocktail and it was great! It reminded me of an old fashioned with a lemony aftertaste, but the lemon taste complemented it and made for a great cocktail. The staff was friendly and the drink was made quickly. All around I enjoyed it here and felt the cocktail was stiff and had a good consistency to it. It reminded me of when I lived near Shanghai and would often drink proper cocktails. Good experience overall here!

This is such a great theater! The seats were incredibly comfortable and it's an incredible place to go on a nice movie date. Much like the Alamo Drafthouse, you won't see a child and there's assigned seating. This is really the way to watch a movie when you're seeing it in theaters. Much like Alamo, there's food and beverages to be had, but they don't come in an take orders during the movie. So your movie never gets ruined by a member of the staff. They also have a nice bar area where we stayed and chatted about the movie after it was finished. Oh and the best thing is free parking downtown! You can't beat that! The only thing keeping it from 5 stars is that the drinks were a bit pricey.

Date night with the gf included $11 movie tickets per person, $22 for a cider and a glass of white wine, an aggressive wait staff that made us feel unwelcome to sit in the "dining" section to wait for our movies (with a posted sign that says "please seat yourself"), and a token that we were not told was for the parking lot. Oh and with a nice cherry on top of having to go back inside from not being able to get out of the parking garage and a staff member rolling her eyes and sighing at us when she had to explain the token... We will not be going back. Expensive, subpar food, uncomfortable seating, and extremely moody service.

Went here last night with my friend for her birthday. We got pork tapas (SO GOOD), and the Mediterranean plate, also very good. We both ordered a $10 cocktail (choke on that price!!), the name had "Ava Gardner" in it I believe. The drink was AMAZING, but was TINNNYYYY. Seriously, 3 sips and you're done. We sprung for the front row recliner seats which, while comfortable, were extremely difficult and awkward to get in and out of (I was in a skirt! Hello immodest!) When the movie was over, the lights came up, and we sat and chatted for probably 3 minutes, discussing the movie. A "too cool for my job" employee walked in and gawked at us still sitting there and said, "You have to go now." Deadpan. Rude. I laughed and said, "Did you really just tell us we have to go now?" He said in a confrontational tone, "Yes, that's what I said." I said to him, "Do you think there's a nicer way you could say that?!" I felt like I was schooling one of my children. It was very rude. Whatever happened to customer service? I won't be returning.

I am in love with this place. It's perfect. The food is consistently amazing! The beers seem to get changed up pretty regularly and they will always allow you to sample before you commit. I recommend arriving about an hour early, ordering food, and then snagging a spot on the porch. What it lacks in views it makes up for in sunny, breezy awesomeness. Time to people watch while you sip your beer :) Just don't forget to make it inside for your movie!!

I thought I had this whole drinking and eating while watching a movie thing all figured out in Austin...but then...a group of friends met up at Violet Crown Cinema and whoa. My mind was blown. This was so much better than I expected. The bartender invented (long before I arrived) and then muddled and mixed my Constant Ava Gardner before the show and it was really the best cocktail I've had in a long time. The popcorn, while not a steal at $6, comes with unlimited refills and is pretty tasty, as far as popcorn goes. The theaters were small and clean. Plus, they validate parking in the garage behind.

Remember when the Dobie was considered the "art house" cinema in town? Ahhh, those were the days. I digress. The Violet Crown is worlds away from the Dobie, and is worlds away from the other art house/independent movie theater in town (Regal Arbor). Alcohol is served and it looks like the W Hotel interior designers did this place too. You can get regular movie snacks or fancier things like Cake Ball (!). Stabilize everything you order on the little desk tables that fold over your seat like they did in college. But the best thing, besides the movies they show, is that you're right in the middle of downtown and there are million things to do before or after your movie. The only downside about the Violet Crown is parking. The garage they use (on San Antonio between 2nd and 3rd) can get full. They made us park on the ramp last time. Just be weary of this if going on a Friday or Saturday night. However, I didn't get a parking ticket thing so I could have left my car there all night instead of just the 4 hour max.

Great little bar for before the movie. The actual theatre itself was pretty small. Our 2 seats were sticky from the previous guests who were constantly cheersing with sodas and lollipops. A guy who worked there apologized and cleaned it up, cool. Gone girl was amazing! Check it out by the way.. But it's a long movie, and the drunk lady next to me thought it was too. Constantly leaning forward and back like she was working out her core to burn off those extra martinis. Not one time did I see someone come in to look over the audience. She was a clear nuisance and seriously the last thing I want to do during a movie is have to go find someone to complain, after shuffling through the thin aisles.

THIS PLACE ONLY CARES ABOUT TAKING YOUR MONEY. I used to like Violet Crown. Recently, a drunk b-hole sat behind me and wouldn't stop making obnoxious, unfunny comments during the film. My lovely girlfriend kindly asked him to hush, and he antagonized her. I got up and went to the manager who followed me back in, waved "hi" at the drunk, and left. This is when the drunken buffoon began kicking my seat in retaliation. I complained to the manager afterward and he said he tried his best. Violet Crown sells booze, not films. Don't ever forget that. STAY AWAY FROM VIOLET CROWN IF YOU WANT TO ACTUALLY ENJOY THE MOVIE YOU PAID TO SEE. GO TO ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE, INSTEAD. AT LEAST THEY WOULD'VE KICKED OUT THIS DRUNKEN DOUCHECANOE.

This is a great date place. Super intimate theater. It's really small, but in all the best ways. I saw "Her" there and I had a great experience. Drinks are good too. A lil pricey, but worth it.

I walk by Violet Crown Cinema almost every day and have recently noticed a sandwich board outside, notating lunch specials starting at $7. Lunch at a movie theatre? That sounds like dinner at a bowling alley. Intrigued, I finally made it in today and was pleasantly surprised by the quiet, almost library-like ambiance. The theatre is to the left as you walk in, with the kiosk where you pay for your seats. To the right is the bar for ordering lunch and further right, two seating areas with various tables, benches, and stools, well-decorated and nicely lit from the windows facing 2nd street. They were not kidding about the lunch specials starting at $7. In fact, I was not feeling too hungry, so I just got a side salad ($4) but next time I will round it out with a cup of potato soup ($3) or, get a sandwich or calzone ($9) that comes with your choice of soup, salad, or fries. These are very reasonable prices considering the ambiance, quality of the food, and the location. We are in the 2nd street district after all where most places are pricey, and chaotic, with varying levels of food quality. The lunch specials run from 11-3PM, just on the weekdays I think but I am not sure. I wish they would post this information on their website. I had not gone in yet, since I had not found any accomplices fearless enough to go with me and I happened to be feeling fearless enough today. And to think I almost went to Leaf. So The Avocado Lightening was delicious (see photo) and was definitely well-portioned and priced. Basically three handfuls of field greens, half an avocado, diced tomatoes, crushed tortilla chips, some onions, and some jalapenos (just enough for kick, not overwhelming and no seeds). The salad was very lightly dressed and served with more peppercorn ranch on the side. I appreciate that they didn't fully dress it, as it was not necessary with so much avocado, but it was as if the chef was saying, "I understand if you don't want to put a whole 2 ounces of dressing on your salad, but you need at least this much to get the impression I want you to get of the salad." And it was. My first bite was actually really nostalgic and it took me a minute identify it: my grandmother's taco salad. She makes hers with ground beef, iceberg lettuce, olives, Doritos, and Green Goddess dressing. The VC version is obviously a little more high-brow but plays on the powerful trifecta of greens, chips, and dressing just as grandma's version does. It is a shame that there was no need for more of the ranch since it was drinkably-delicious. Next time (ahem, tomorrow, anyone?), I definitely want to try the potato soup that boasts parmesan, prosciutto, cream, and chives, and possibly the PLT sandwich(prosciutto, lettuce, tomatoes). The menu is small and slightly repetitive (potato, avocado, prosciutto, pepperoni, and smoked pork show up in almost all of the menu categories, in slightly different forms) but, if they are combining them and re-combining them in tasty ways at reasonable prices, who cares? And maybe someday, I will actually see a movie here.

I really love this place. Watching a movie somewhere else just wouldn't be the same. First of all, I love that I can easily purchase tickets through their app - extremely convenient. Their food options are great and there's a lot of variety depending on what you're in the mood for. The best part is their cocktails. Love everything they have on the menu. AND the service has always been wonderful. Our best experience was with Bastion - absolutely fantastic waiter.

I wouldn't mind going again. I think the things I learned from my first experience will help me have an easier time of it next time. My mom and I went for lunch and a movie on a weekday afternoon. Little did we know exactly how little the tables would be. Let's just say if you plan on getting a meal with an appetizer to share you better be really good at juggling. Basically, we ordered the hummus and pita to share as well as the pepperoni pizza for me and the margherita pizza for my mom. We also had a iced tea and a bottle of water. All this was brought out on a huge, heavy tray. Thank goodness I was there because my mom couldn't even carry it because of its weight and awkwardness + her carpal tunnel. We got our food in roughly 15 minutes which gave us about 5 minutes to eat before we were brought into the theater. The hummus was heavy on the spices and my mom couldn't eat it. I thought it was ok, just a bit overpowering. The pepperoni pizza was ok but really greasy. So greasy that in the dark theater I couldn't see a huge pocket of grease tucked into a pepperoni and when I bit in to it the grease dripped all down my shirt. Not so pleasant. My mom liked her margherita pizza. I guess without the pepperoni grease pits I would've liked mine too. The real trick with all this was actually getting into the seats. Even with my mom helping pull out the awkward tables from their slots between the seats and putting our plates on the tables it was still chaos with people trying to squeeze past us into their seats and also get settled. Not to mention if you have the table out you can't access the cupholder. On top of all this if you and your neighbors are not skinny twigs you are not going to be comfortable. The table swings out in front of you and if you don't want to do that it is going to be in your neighbors way. If you yourself are larger (like me) then you will have to have the table pushed out farther and then when people tromp past you on the way to the bathroom you risk getting covered in whatever you have on the table. To make things even more frustrating, since this is all self service, if you don't want to be trapped behind that table for the rest of the movie you better get up while the movie is on and bring your plates to the trash station....if you can squeeze past everyone else in the theater and their tables piled with plates. Good luck with that. Thank goodness the movie we saw was great or this would've been just a big stressful and uncomfortable experience. The theater LOOKS good but it was just not very well planned and thought out as far as usefulness goes. Not to mention with how small the theater is you can hear every single person who talks during the movie and SMELL whatever they are eating. I love Antonelli's but damn that is some stinky cheese to be smelling for 3 hours straight. As far as service goes, the people were nice but 2/3 of them seemed to have no idea what was going on as far as food and drinks...even though they were taking the orders. Get some product knowledge, folks. MY ADVICE: Do not go here and plan to eat a whole meal. Alcohol would be the easiest way to go. I think next time I will skip the food and hassle of moving through the small theater completely and aim for one of the lounge chairs on the front row. Either that or get there really really early so you have time to eat in the lobby beforehand...but the food quality isn't really worth that. Lesson learned.

Cinema heaven. If you are a serious film lover, this is the best theater in Austin. Don't get me wrong - I love the Alamo. I love the pre-show programming and the wide variety of snacks, but for the pure film-going experience, Violet Crown is tops. The theaters are small and dark and you are right there, up close and personal with the piece of art unspooling before your very eyes. And I say "art" because you won't find the latest action movie blockbuster here. VC shows independent and foreign films, documentaries, and limited-release studio films. I live south, and it's nice not to have to go up to the Arbor to catch a flick. The tickets are more expensive, but to me it's worth it if there's a movie I really want to see. The reserved seating is great, and has worked so well that the Alamo theaters have implemented the same system. But due to the small theaters, things sell out quickly, so get on that early if there's something you want to see. Last time I went, the only seats left were in the front row. I was a little bummed, but remembered that the front row is a good distance from the screen, plus I really wanted to see the movie, so I went for it. Walked into the theater to discover that the front row is all recliners. Sinking into my leather chair, propping my feet up, chewing on my twizzlers - I felt like a BALLER. And you can't see the people behind you, so it really feels like a private screening room. Film is probably the second greatest love of my life. I am so happy that a place like the Violet Crown exists.

Always love the "member's only" feel you get here. Bar has amazing specialty drinks, seats are ok, IPIC has better chairs but the bar and space make up for it.

I've become a fan of Violet Crown over Alamo Drafthouse and here's why: *Violet Crown has an air of class that at least some of the Alamos are missing. *The food I've tried has been first rate. Not having servers darting through the theater (and strangely forgetting my food more than once) is a relief. *The seats are super comfy inside smaller theaters with big screens. *The proximity to the rail station at the Convention Center means I don't have to drive there. *They show great films and are located near lots of good restaurants (not that you need them) and shops. Fun time all around!

This is my favorite cinema in Austin. There is lots of covered parking, and the 4 hours that's allowed gives you enough time to grab a snack before the film at the bar, take a glass inside, or stop nearby for a drink afterwards. The movies are top rated, seats are comfy, reserved in advance, and all in all it's a pretty close to perfect experience.

Nice, comfortable stadium seating paired with the small, intimate venue setting is a great escape from the normal cinemas. We visited the Violet Crown for the first time over the weekend to see A Most Wanted Man (side bar; it's a must see as it was suspense filled. Philip Seymour Hoffman at his best. So sad that it was his last work). I'm certain the Violet Crown will become one of our regular hang outs. Full bar and plenty of choices regarding food. To make matters even better the popcorn is bottomless and parking is free. Because it's validated for 4 hours it gives you plenty of time to take advantage of other downtown offers.

The Violet Crown Cinema is great! I rarely want to go to movies (always afraid of wasting my time on a dud - thank you Anchorman 2, ugh!) but with the very select movie offerings here, chances are, you won't waste your time. Of course, not every movie here is amazing, but generally, they offer quality movies and avoid the ridiculous comedies. In particular, my husband and I stopped in to watch the documentary, Blackfish last year. This is one of only a few theaters in Texas that offered this documentary when it was released. We had a wonderful date night and truly enjoyed the cinemas. The bar and lounge were fun, although a bit overpriced. We opted to stay for the movie then head out for drinks after vs hanging around the lounge. Inside the theater rooms, you will find comfy seats and an intimate setting. Most of the theaters are quite small, so be sure to reserve your tickets ahead of time!

I love Violet Crown for the following reasons: They show interesting films. If you want the latest Will Ferrell, head to the Alamo. If you wanna see what won awards at Sundance, come here. Reserved seating. I can show up 5 minutes before my movie if I wish. (Tip - show up earlier and put your name on the list for the la-z-boy chairs in the front row. IMO they are the best seats in the house, but they are reserved for the handicapped until right before showtime.) Show up early anyway because the lounge is cute and has books and games and is typically showing a movie. The food! We've been a few times: the ginger pork tapas were excellent, the sweet potato chips are worth getting no matter what you are eating, the crème brulee was yummy...(I also appreciate the fold out trays so you have your own space.) Drinks! Craft cocktails are very well made and unique (a favorite is the Bee's Nest: Gin, Douglas Fir Eau De Vie, lemon juice, honey). If you want a pre- or post drink, Malverde, Malaga, La Condesa, and the W are right there!) Free parking, whoop! Park underneath in the AMLI garage or valet on 2nd and Violet Crown validates for four hours. The only thing not to like here is they do not have service inside the theater - you must exit and go grab your food (or, bring it in with you, if you read the advice above and showed early :)

From where I live, this theater is a drive. However, I love the location because I usually go to a nearby restaurant for dinner or happy hour before or after the movie. With that said, I haven't actually tried any of the food at Violet Crown aside from their chips and queso which were pretty good! Their cocktails have always been tasty - though somewhat pricy. It's on par with what you would pay at other dine in theaters though. I really like that they show unique independent films and cover your parking for up to 4 hours. It's nice that you don't have to search around downtown for parking while you're trying to make it to your movie on time. The lounge area is nice for after movie drinks and they also have an outdoor baloney seating area. It's easy reserving your seats and buying tickets online. I really don't have any complaints about Violet Crown, except, I wish that they had service in each theater for drink refills, ordering food, etc. However, you are able to order food before your movie and take it in to the theater with you.

I admittedly have never had the "art house cinema" experience, but with that said I do embrace new things, people and places. So despite never hitting up the Dobie before it closed I was intrigued when I heard Violet Crown Cinema was opening on 2nd Street. The first big plus is the free parking. If catching a movie at VCC, park in the AMLI on San Antonio between 2nd & 3rd street right by How Do you Roll?, bring in your parking ticket and VCC with validate it so you don't have to pay (good for up to 4 hours). The second plus is they have a reasonably priced menu with lots of beer, wine and mixed drink options. The food menu is somewhat small and the only item over $10 is the Antonelli's cheese plate. I loved the cheese plate which had bread, honey, pistachios, and a generous portion of 3 types of cheeses. The mister had a pizza which was OK and on the small side. The movies do not have previews. It was nice to go watch a movie without the corporates forcing you to watch 15 minutes of trailers. The Australian made seats are comfy and they have the old school table trays that pull out from the side. The one down fall is it is hard to find room for a plate of food and a drink. Speaking of food and drinks, you order outside the cinema in the lounge/bar area and carry it in yourself (although staff offered to help us carry it in). Bad seat? One does not exist at VCC. Sitting in the front row will not put a crook in your neck but instead you get the lazy boy of the cinema chairs. I adore this place and will be back.

This is a super cute theatre, great date spot, and overall enjoyable experience. Parking is free with validation from buying a ticket (which is definitely nice when you consider that most restaurants make you pay for valet parking or force you to find your own spot. Downtown. On a Saturday night. Really?) Anyway, you walk up and order food/drinks at the register if you want anything (I had a forgetable, overpriced salad but the flatbreads and truffle fries are great), they give you a ticket, and then your food is served to you either at the tables nearby in the lobby or in the movie. It's best to come 30 minutes-ish before your movie and enjoy outside but either way. We were running late so they brough it to us in the theatre (they're not quite as organized as Alamo Drafthouse in that respect). However, I loved that we could get a glass of wine after the movie and sit out in the empty lobby and chat. Would definitely recommend!

Fan-fucking-tastic choice for a 2nd or 3rd date, a fun outing with co-workers/friends, or a treat-yo-self kind of night. In addition to a roster of great films, they have a really cool menu of small plates, desserts, craft cocktails and traditional cinema fare. You can do hotdogs and beer or a tapas plate with a cucumber martini. I'm rating this so highly because I think this is just a perfect place for cinephiles and culture vultures alike. Encore!

My sister and I went recently and it is by far the most wonderful movie experience I have ever had. The Violet Crown is a classy but not stuffy cinema that seems to really care about how your film is viewed. All the employees we encountered were attentive and helpful, especially when we were deciding on what to eat. The small theaters make for the perfect setting for any film and each seat is cushy and has an unobstructed view of the screen. I know these days it's easier to have a server come in and bring you your drinks and apps but I really love that the full bar and tasty menu is offered only at the entrance. I feel when servers are coming in and out of the theater it always takes away from whatever film you are supposed to be engrossed in. My only wish is that I lived in Austin to see every film there, but the drive from San Antonio will be well worth it. Thank you for opening a theater that is made for people who love films.

The staff here is disorganized and I don't think that the manager understands customer service. The queso and chips (well crumbs rather) were not good so we asked to switch it out for a Mediterranean platter. Instead of just apologizing for the inconvenience, the mgr refunded our money for the queso, then had us pay full price for the other platter (where we were overcharged for because the girl taking our order charged us for pita bread when it came with pita bread), and then it took 15 minutes for us to get our food and we were 10 minutes late for the movie. Manager was not accommodating at all or apologetic. Very disappointing.

Look - this ain't the Alamo. So change your expectations, change your behaviors a smidge, and you'll be happy. Come early. Come without planning to see a movie, even. The drinks and food are that good. The seating for food is also quite nice, so come early and eat in the dining area. No, they don't do table service in the theater - it's okay. You'll live. Eat first, so you can see your food. It's GOOD food. We had a shredded pork appetizer that was super delicious, and sauteed brussels sprouts that are my new favorite version of sprouts, EVAH. We also had a margarita pizza that was pretty damn good. Nice wine list, good drink choices, etc. Enjoy your food and drink. Then get your seat (assuming you've bought your tickets in advance). The front row is not your ordinary front row, it has lounge chairs, so you'll want to sit there. You won't be craning your neck, don't worry. Didn't score a lounger? It's okay, the other seats are still pretty comfy. Beats the hell out of the old beat-up seats at an Alamo (I love the Alamo, btw). If you bring your plates and crap into the theater, you're gonna have to deal with them if you get up to pee, or if people come through - so just eat first and don't be a pain. What's better here than at the Alamo? The food, the art films, the new seats and clean bathrooms. What's better at the Alamo than here? They bring the food to you and have clever pre-show entertainment. You pick. Want quality? VC it is.

So excited that my husband and I checked out this theater. It was truly the perfect date night. Easy and convenient parking in the attached garage. The cost is included in your ticket. We got there about 45 minutes early and sat in the bar area. I enjoyed a small plate of the pepperoni sliders with some of the best french fries I've had in town. Our cocktails were perfectly mixed. Despite the small portions, I left the table satisfied. Grabbed a soda, some popcorn and some cake balls to split in the theater. DO NOT BRING YOUR DINNER INTO THE THEATER! I know you can, but the tables are tiny and I cannot imagine trying to set an entire meal on them, let alone pull out the table with hands full of dishes. Our snacks were the perfect size. Free drink refills got my vote, especially because they had natural sodas to keep me happy. The cake balls were some of the best I have had. The popcorn was so-so, definitely not my favorite movie popcorn. The seats are super comfortable. It can be a bit awkward pulling out your table if the person next to you is in their seat. Same for putting it back. For me, the fact that I can reserve my seat is the most amazing and wonderful thing ever. I am super picky about where I sit at a movie and this allows me to sit where I want and with my entire group, no worries. For me (and I know I can come across anti-kid at times even though I'm not), one of the best things was realizing due to the types of movies they show and the environment, there were no kids. It's not really a kid-friendly type of place and I like that. It's nice to get a break from kids when it seems like I see them everywhere, including my favorite bars (sigh). Anyways, I totally recommend this place. It is great, well thought out, and a perfect place for a date night. Everything you need in one place. Perfect.

Great location and i love their movies but apparently my husband and I (50s) aren't hip enough to warrant service in their eating area. The staff was too busy jacking around behind the bar. We had to request service twice during our one meal... And there was only 2 other tables occupied. We will take our business to Alamo Drafthouse and the Regal Arbor

This is a small theater with reserved seating, great drinks, delicious food and great movie options. Get your tickets online before you go and go early to have a cocktail before the show! The cake balls are always a great option for desert!

Well, my boyfriend did return to violet crown, and got our refund in full. A manager responded promptly to our review, and we appreciate that. I reserve my judgement for this business until we go again, and I will say the experience was nice until end and all the chaos started. I want another watermelon mojito, and to finish it, so we will probably go back and try to see that movie again soon!

I've been here 4 or 5 times, and every time I leave asking myself, "Why did I bother coming here again?" It's by far the LEAST convenient theater in town (unless you're a douche townie from the highrises), the staff are as a whole way too cool in their own minds for anyone's good (except for a few gems like Bastion), and the experience as a whole is nowhere near as good as Alamo (any location), or as easy as a regular theater. The only good thing is the programming, which is I guess why I have continued to come back, but after my last experience... highly unlikely I'll bother. First act - the FAIRLY BAD: We wanted to see a movie on Christmas eve, and understanding that lots of things are closed, we called ahead to verify they were open and the showtime for our movie was accurate (from what Flixster said). Sure enough, their daily outgoing message verified the date, our movie and time, so we committed our night to that. When we showed up at the appointed time, we were told that in fact that our movie was NOT going to be showing at that time, and the only remaining show was something else we had already seen. We were bummed, but the manager apologized, and shit happens. Did they offer to comp us a drink or give us tickets for a later show? Nope. But whatever. So we decided, "Hey, while we're here, let's hang out for a bit and get a drink." We could have gone plenty of other places to give them our money, but we had already driven down there and bothered to park in the garage, so we decided to stay. Second act - THE INEXCUSABLE: After enjoying our drinks (which were actually quite good and fairly priced), on our way out of the garage, the parking attendant tells us we owe her $15. We had been there for less than an hour, and had a validated parking pass... so WTF did we owe $15? Because apparently, when this place DOESN'T have the movie they told you they would at the time they told you they would, they only validate you for 15 minutes... ! WTF? So our choice to STAY at your establishment and give you our money, even though we should NOT have, ends up costing us MORE money? Oh hell no. I got out of the car and went back inside. The girl at the ticket counter was chatting with her friend, so I waited patiently. Some other dude walked up as if he knew her, she validated him, then went back to talking to her friend. I cleared my throat and only then did she stop her personal conversation to attend to me. I reminded her that we had come to see a movie they had listed in their phone recording but were not actually showing, and now that we were trying to leave, the garage was asking us to pay $15. She responded that they only validate for 15 minutes on cancelled shows. I asked her could she validate my parking for longer, and after pleading my case, she snarkily replied that she would, but ONLY because it was Christmas eve! Really? Not because it's the right thing to do, or because it's good customer service, but because the holiday spirit has possessed you temporarily and you are deciding to be a good human being for this ONEmoment? I mean, thanks for the favor, but why did you bother? Was it a last minute appeal to Santa, a weak attempt to make up for how you normally treat customers the other 364.8 days of the year? I mean, I know this is downtown, and I'm sure you're used to dealing with douches, but I was patient and polite and understanding up to that point, and the only reason I was leaving at that moment instead of sitting in a theater watching the movie I drove down there to see was because YOU GUYS F#$#$CKED UP and ruined my plans for the evening. Third act - THE CONCLUSION, NATCH: Needless to say, I don't plan to go back. Rarely do they show anything so special I can't see it somewhere else. In the event that happens, I make a pretty mean drink myself, so I'll just stay at home and watch something Criterion from Hulu from the comfort of my own sofa. If I want to go out, I'll just hit the Ritz or other Alamos, or somewhere where they care more about their customers, like... the Mall theater.

My first impression: it comes off a bit uppity. The tickets are a bit more than a conventional theater, and the theaters themselves seat like 8 people. Slight understatement.. Slight. Their popcorn has real butter and they offer cane sweetened soft drinks. The chairs are very comfortable and the sound quality is good. The theater was clean and the staff, though light and overworked even for a matinee, were very cordial. I'd definitely go again and it is certainly worth checking out. To be honest, I didn't know a theater like thus existed until it was the only one playing the movie I wanted to see. It is pretty cool, unconventional. They provide free parking (validated) in the garage next door. But come early as spots may be hard to find.

Very cool place. Order your tickets online, reserved seating. Big comfy chairs. Full bar with seating in the lobby. Decent menu for food as well although we did not eat there. You can order food, get the buzzer thing, get a buzz when ready and bring it into the theater to your seat where the tray can sit comfortably on your armrests. I'd go back when in Austin.

Very disappointing Oscar night. Over 30 minutes to get a cocktail in lounge area, no one to take validated parking ticket (they have to know it's a long night and made no accommodation with parking garage) and loud group of 30 something's making no value comments instead of allowing the rest of us to hear the show. Pizza was pretty good earning 1 star for the experience.

This theater has the comfiest seats I've ever sat in at a movie theater. Ever. It's not even a contest. Seriously, they're plucked straight out of an extra-plush 1980s Cadillac or something, only formed into a bucket instead of a bench. I actually prefer these to the balcony recliners at Alamo Ritz since they're a tad firmer and more supportive, plus the visibility is excellent even if you're short. They're *that* good. The theaters are small, but you can pick your seats. Picture quality is excellent. Everything is nice and clean--no sticky icky floors when you walk over to your seat. They specialize in indie-type movies, so if that's your thing, you're going to be a very happy bunny with what they have to show. I think that helps keep many of the noisytards out--if you're not serious about movies, you're probably going to go see something else, someWHERE else. Parking is easy to find and validated at the desk when you show them your ticket. Being able to order tickets online is awesome, too. I love that there's a variety of healthier munchies (hummus, anyone?) along with a small selection of the usual candy. Oh, and there's a full coffeeshop-type setup. The espresso drinks are a billion times better than Starbucks and I could bring mine right into the theater. YES! I'd go back here in a heartbeat. It's a wonderful, pleasant little theater.

Was grossly over charged at the bar. Brought it to the bar managers attention. He accused me of lying. After a few minutes of sorting it out he came back to apologize to me. The entire time the bar tender stood there with a smirk on his face offering no apology.....great customer service.

If you are a fussy filmgoer, as I am, you will be very happy to hit the VC instead of the dilapidated Arbor. I have seen 20 or so films there at this point. Here's what to expect: Presentation: Screens are small but so is the room; has an intimate feeling. It doesn't feel particularly bright, even for the small screen, and at times I feel like their digital system really plays up the noise in film grain. I try and sit further from the screen here than other places because the visual noise is less of an issue then, for me anyway. I have no idea what kind of projectors they have. Sound can be a problem; if your film is very quiet, you will hear the film next door. Seating: Comfortable seats. They have trays that fold up - like a lot of the lecture halls at UT. They are hard to unfold, and are actually part of your neighbor's seat. If your hands are full, you will have difficulty unfolding the table. I have never sat on the front row - too too close to the screen, but some people love it. Food and Drink: The drinks are well made. Food has been uniformly good. Often we get the pita & hummus plate, a good movie snack for two. The candy and beverages are about average for a movie theatre in terms of cost. It's not the Alamo. Getting a complicated meal here is a bad idea; any problems and you will miss some of your film. Snacks & drinks - that's about all I would venture. Staff: Bartenders are terribly hard to make contact with. Stick with the simple snack area unless you have time. No one seems to be happy working there, ever; BUT, I have not experienced a *rude* person either. It really is more like a chain theatre in this way. Parking is easy - use the garage and get your ticket validated.

So I went here to see a Woody Allen movie (and I can't decide if I'm ashamed or proud of that), and I was pleasantly surprised. The place is classy, with a nice full bar that seems to dabble in mixology a bit. The beer selection is small, but passable. We went to a later show, and there didn't seem to be any kind of food that wasn't a snack, despite the full menu online. The theaters are small, and seat no more than 30 people, but the seats are big and plush and comfortable with individual armrests and fold-out "tables" like those folding desks you used in high school (if you're over 25 and under 45, anyway). I liked that the tables folded away, but found them to be smaller than I would like; had the theater been full, I'd've had popcorn in my lap instead of being able to use the adjacent seat's table. For those used to the Alamo Drafthouse, there's one, big, HUGE, difference. THERE ARE NO WAITERS AND NO TABLE SERVICE. If you want a drink refill, you have to get up and get it. That was VERY disappointing to me. I guess I had the "Alamo" experience in mind, and this is not it. This is more for people who want to have their "dinner and movie" in the same place, but not at the same time. Classy, polite employees, upscale. With that in mind, it was well executed.

Best movie theater ever, besides the Castro in SF (which is number one, thanks to the "mighty Wurlitzer" that rises out of the orchestra pit). Being sleek and modern, the Violet Crown is the opposite of an old-fashioned movie theater. But if you think about it, the old movie palaces were designed to be up-to-date in the 1920s, and this place is simply designed to be up-to-date in the 21st century. Nothing wrong with that, plus they do so many things right here. Reserved seating, comfortable chairs, an excellent bar and lounge area, a great location, an outdoor balcony with a view. I love coming here!

I'll start this review off by saying that I heard a lot of really excellent things about this cinema before I went there so, overwhelmingly positive expectations taken into account, get your grains of salt ready. I arrived about fifteen minutes before my movie having purchased tickets and reserved seats online. I went up to the counter and got my will-call tickets and felt pretty confident about this theatre arrangement. It looked nice. There were lots of dark woods and "coming soon" posters for interesting movies lined the walls. They even offered validated parking (up to 4 hours). Then I was informed of something that made the entire theatrical experience something of a travesty: they had no table service. I had been told by numerous acquaintances that this place was "like the Alamo, only better" and, when it comes to how the food tastes, I may have to agree with them. However, the Alamo has one thing that Violet crown doesn't offer: a waitstaff. Hell, the one downtown even offers cocktails. As to the food? I had an overpriced grilled chicken and prosciutto sammy with lemon/garlic aioli. It was better by a step or two than the glorified bar food at the aformentioned cinema but nothing to write home about. The lights came on before the film was over and we had to clear our own plates. Oh, shit, I forgot to mention the worst part about the lack of table service: when our food was ready the little restaurant-style-waiting-device didn't even vibrate. It LIT UP. So I had to keep it on my lap and keep an eye on it to notice when it was time to leave the film and head to the cafe. Also, I can only imagine it was terribly distracting for the other patrons. All in all? You're going to have to do a *lot* better than that to impress me.

I found this movie theatre quite impressive. The modern aesthetic and cafe seating overlooking 2nd is pretty cool. We went to a late screening so, take that into account. The bartender made the drinks strong but wasn't too friendly. It was 10 PM so, she was prolly tired. She made the drinks slowly. The cashier girls are friendly and always had a smile. Ticket purchase was easy and reserved seating made things alot easier. Next time, I'll grab front rows where there are recliners. They don't serve food or drinks in the actual theatre (which can go either way) and they close the bar down 15 minutes after the last movie starts. My only complaint is why not keep the bar open until 15 minutes after the last movie ENDS? That way, everyone can hang out in the lobby space after a movie. My only complaints were not being served in the theatre (I'm actually 50/50 on that) and the fact that the bar closes before the last movie even ends. It almost feels like you're rushed out.

We went to have some food and drinks here yesterday afternoon. The decor is very cool - interesting mixed media display on the walls. The food was surprisingly good. I have pretty low expectations for movie theater food but the spring rolls and hummus plate tasted great. My mother, who generally does not like anything, commented on how much she liked those spring rolls. Service was quick and the prices were reasonable. $12 for spring rolls and $8 for hummus. I would definitely come back for lunch or a snack.

Violet Crown Cinema is awesome, if you're an indy film fan. Basically a step above an Alamo Drafthouse, but below a Gold Class Cinema, while having its own personality. They *only* show independent and artsy films here. You won't find summer blockbusters shown here. Which is kind of cool, you get to see movies you otherwise would never have heard of. The place itself is really swanky, located on the second level, overlooking 2nd Street. It's on the other side of the W Hotel, accessible by stairs or an elevator. There's a bar and a lounge area for you to chill at while you wait for your movie. I ordered the "Corpse Reviver," a strong mix of Beefeater gin, Cointreau and Lillet mixed with lemon juice and served with an orange peel. It cost $10 and was really good. They had a bunch of other cinema-themed cocktails on the menu, ranging from $8-12. Yes, it's a little on the expensive side, but it's a cool atmosphere. Tickets were $11 apiece, and they have assigned seating (common in Europe and slowly catching on in the US). I counted four theaters, but I don't know if they have more. The theaters are small, seating maybe 100 people max. There are no funny trailers like in the Alamo Drafthouses; Violet Crown Cinema is more serious, but not pretentious or anything. Nor are there any long tables or waiter service in the theater, but you can order drinks and food at the bar and bring them into the theater with you; all the seats have fold-out tray tables. I thought the service was pretty good. I went here with my parents, originally to see Killer Joe. I didn't know anything about the movie, I just went along for the ride. On the drive down there, I checked out Killer Joe on my phone, and found that it was NC-17 for all kinds of crap; that didn't bother me, but my mom was definitely not gonna see it. Being as we had already bought tickets online, we called the place up and asked if we could switch the tickets out for another movie. They did, and were very courteous about it. Also, the bartender and cashier were both very attentive. It's good to have a solid arthouse theater in town, and I will be coming back again in the future.

This theater has an edgy and local/cool boutique vibe with a service staff to match. Def. my choice for a film when in Austin. I was lucky to get a front row recliner seat and totally recommend it. The bartenders are excellent and draft beer + drink list won't let you down. This is the best movie experience I have had. Looking forward to seeing another film here soon.

Every time I go to Violet Crown Cinema, I leave feeling just a tad bit more cultured and worldly. I love that we have a local theater that is promoting independant films and opening our eyes to the world of non-blockbuster cinema. Most recently, my boyfriend and I have been checking out the Oscar nominated short films that VCC has been featuring leading up to the Oscars. I know to hit up Violet Crown's website for the latest screenings when I'm in the mood for something thought-provoking. And while I'm probably going to get heckled for saying this, VCC is the Alamo Drafthouse's refined older sister. I give the bar selection a thumbs up but have yet to try the food offerings. The rooms have very limited seating which makes for an intimate and cozy atmosphere.

Never again. Our maiden voyage to Violet Crown Cinema left us shipwrecked. Buying tickets on-line was easy enough but that's where the convenience ends. Waited at the bar for 15 minutes in what seemed like a continued snubbing by the bartender with the silver eyeglasses. Finally ordered and got drinks. At that point, we had less than 10 minutes to scarf down the food and get into our seats. I like the aesthetic of the lounge but the acoustics were terrible as I couldn't hear anything my wife was saying, only the obnoxious yarn-spinning of another waiter. Got our food and the Mediterranean plate was pretty good. Once we walked into the theater, things got tricky. Contrary to a lot of reviews regarding how comfortable this theater it, it is nearly impossible to manage sitting down with a beer and plate in either hand and then pull out the tiny table to set your food and drink on. You basically have to hand off your food to someone else or set your $14 pizza on the floor. The whole time you are deathly afraid of making too much noise or knocking your overpriced food and drink on the floor or on your over-served neighbor. After you're finished eating, you can leave the movie to bus your own table or you can leave the dirty dishes in front of you for two more hours. Both are frustrating options. The seats are uncomfortable and they are not breathable at all. You cannot move your legs under the food tables so you essentially can't truly relax at any point. The screen is tiny and does not justify a $13 ticket. I tipped at the bar but would much rather prefer to get the service of a waiter. Back to Alamo South Lamar for good!

For several weeks in a row after I discovered the existence of Violet Crown Cinema I bugged Walker F to go with me to see a movie there. Unfortunately, the movie selection and time never seemed to work out. A few weeks ago we had a lucky break and were able to finally get tickets to see "The Artist." We arrived about an hour early because we wanted to get our food and drank on before the showing. The bartender was great and made some very tasty bevvys. Unlike the Alamo, you can get a real drank here. I got a sazerac, which was excellent. The food took a little longer then expected, so the bartender gave us a beeper and told us to come out and grab it when it was ready. It was ready shortly after the movie started. The seats were fantastic. I really like the fold-out trays. Now, I don't need to eat off my lap like I do at the Alamo. The speakers are really good and the screen size, while smaller then most theatres, is completely acceptable for a small theatre. Oh, and stadium seating is totally awesome. Not sure how the movie would look if you were in the first couple rows though. Cons: -Difficult to get tickets unless you order well in advance because it's a super small theatre. -Watching a silent movie while people are eating popcorn is really annoying. -Having to get up to go to the bar during the movie is a bit frustrating.

This is a nice and cozy contemporary theater with comfortable seats. The plus is you get to pick your seats at time of purchase online. We had issues trying to buy the last two seats on a row online and called and the lady talked us through their glitch saying that she had to manually override a seat because the system will only let you purchase seats directly next to each other with no gaps. I was very happy to have her help put a seat between me and another person. Two things bothered me while I was there and I don't think they can be remedied. One is the movie next to ours was blaring loud bass and intense sounds in the middle of a very quiet and intimate part of ours so I was a little thrown off and taken out of the moments. But what can you do about that. The other thing was that the girl next to me had ordered food then ten minutes later her pager go off and had to get up and go get her food, miss about 5 minutes of the movie and then return to chomp in my ear. Typically it wouldn't bother me but we were watching Amour and the whole movie was quiet and heart-wrenching and you just don't want to be annoyed by snacky mcsmackster next door and her crinkling food basket and getting up that often. It's cool they offer food, but geez. I'll probably return because the facilities are so nice and the movies they offer are great.

Violet Crown you've got some kinks to work out but you're a cute little place! The staff here is fantastic. Great crew of friendly workers, happy to assist. The seating is a little strange - assigned. I like that, I can get there late and know I'll be sitting with the person I bought a ticket for. The brews are decent. I like that too, I can get some good local beer on tap. The movies are good. At least Circo was -- the old people in back of us were priceless. Sadly we had a seating crises and they were in our seats (we didn't care) but I guess they didn't really have seats as they moved again when another couple arrived. I love how young, old, hipster, not cool (me) and anyone else with a prized golden ticket are welcome in the Violet Crown. The free parking is a huge perk except look at an actual map before you get downtown - no time to be lost! Unfortunatly we were lost and paid $7.00 for parking because the actual AMLI lot is scary looking with it's "YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PARK HERE PUBLIC PATRONS!!!!" Hmph, had I actually read I would have noted I wasn't the public. No worries, next time I've got it! It's the huge garage next to the Sushi place. May try the food next time, maybe not. So many tasty options in the vicinity. If you're not one of the cool kids definitely spring for an earlier show. My usual flip flops had me sticking out like a sore thumb.

This place rocks for those that like indie and hard to find films. Arrive early and enjoy a drink or two at the bar and have some snacks as well. You can usually see the same films at the Arbor but this location wins hands down for ambiance and location. Guys, quit being cheap and treat your lady to a night on the town. BTW, they validate! Would we go again? Yes!

The bar/lounge area of this place is great and their service was excellent. I highly recommend dropping in here to have a drink and enjoy some tasty appetizers. We had the Cheese Plate, Mediterranean Platter and One Pepperoni Pizza before our movie. Since it was during their HH we also enjoyed $5 beer, house wine and Margarita's. If my review was based on this area I would give 5 stars. It was nice and very relaxing after a long day. Our movie was in Theatre One and I was surprised by the seating. There is not much space between the rows. My 6'3 companion had a little room because we were seated in the first row of regular seating so there was a railing he could stretch out and put his feet on, not so for the man behind me. He was not as tall but I'm guessing he had even less leg room because his feet hit the back of my chair multiple times through out move, ugh. Annoying as it was I know it wasn't his fault and actually felt sorry for the poor fella. Of course this is a movie theater in an urban area so space is limited, I get it. I will have to remember to purchase tickets that are in the first row of regular seats when I come here (one problem solved). Ok, lets talk about the drink/food holders built into the seat. When I sat down I looked for the standard cup holder but it wasn't there, so after looking down I realized they have the type of table top that slides down by the side of your chair. I pull mine up and wammo its right there and I do mean RIGHT THERE! Not much room to move around once you put this thing up and dont even think about crossing your legs. If you do put it up and cross your legs be careful, very careful. If you hit the table top your drink and or food is going to get knocked off. We were lucky and no one was seated next to us so we were able to pull up the drink holder for the chair next to ours and place our drinks there, problem solved. On the bright side it was nice to actually sit down for a movie and not have to watch a handful of trailers. Also everyone that worked here was super nice! This is a nice place and they do a good job with their limited space, they also validate parking for up to 4 hours. I would not go out of my way to see a movie here unless it was the only place in town the movie was showing and or I was in the area.

Traveling from CA, I have frequented a few other theaters in the Austin area and came here to see Amour. Location is centralized; nice to see options downtown. There is no dedicated outdoor ticket line, so you go inside to the snack counter and buy it. Since that is what I am used to, I didn't see a sign as to what I should do, or where to go, so I was slightly confused for a few seconds...esp also since the lobby windows are tinted from the outside! They have a lounge-y area in the lobby, designed as high-end hipster and such - assumably for drinks. That was kind of cool, I thought. Much to my chagrin, they have reserved seating, and showed me the seating chart where they have placed me, though gave me the option to change it in specific other places! They offered my original seat to me at closer to stage-left, kind of 1/3 of the way up-front, and behind existing people, which I thought was kind of odd. I wonder if they had some sort of software program that does this randomly, or does the ticketmaster do this selection?! I thought it was kind of odd. It was mid-day weekday, and prob wasn't crowded, so I asked them to change it for mid-row center-stage. I purchased a medium-sized iced tea at &4. They have pop-out tables at the seats where you could set your drink. Everything else was fine. Well, not at as hipster/cool/organic like Alamo Drafthouse, but there's no place like this in California either, so they still get three stars from me.

In a town used to and happy with the Alamo, the lack of full service is glaring. We were in a group of 6. We liked that we could reserve our seats, it was clean and stylish, and the lounge was a nice place to hang out... AND THEN. The problems started when our order got messed up. Kitchen was backed up so we had to take buzzers into the theater. When the buzzer went off we had to send a team of 2 dudes to carry the food in shifts past the people at the end of the aisle. When the food came there was no silverware We need forks, where is my wife's prosciutto pizza? So now I have to get up, past the people at the end of the aisle. I gather silverware, "I'm missing a prosciutto pizza", and now I'm missing Moonrise Kingdom. They hand me a buzzer again and I go back into the theater... past the people at the end of the aisle. Now I'm confused at what is happening in the movie. Buzzer goes off again and I get up to go get the lost pizza... past the people at the end of the aisle. When I get to the snack bar a pepperoni pizza is waiting for me. "It is supposed to be a prosciutto pizza" "You said pepperoni" "Never in a million years would I say pepperoni, my wife doesn't like it" They go into panic mode... I'm missing Moonrise Kingdom. "Where are you sitting we'll bring it into you?" So I go back into the theater, past the people at the end of the aisle, I'm confused by what is happening in the movie, and I sit next to my hungry pregnant wife with no pizza. 10 minutes later, the waiter who failed to get the correct order in the first place brings us the much anticipated pizza... past the people at the end of the aisle. Then we sit down and eat on these little sad tables in the dark. It was so dark I accidentally put a lime into my mouth from my salad. When we needed more drinks we had to do it in shifts always by walking past the poor bastards at the end of the aisle. Moral of the story, a routine screw up caused a cluster f, had this happened at The Alamo it is highly likely we would have never known or at the very least it would have been dealt with by a server. It also isn't like I didn't have to tip either. I would only go here if I lived downtown and if it wasn't a movie I was actually looking forward to. I will leave you with a positive piece of bread to this shit sandwich. The parking was included with the movie and they give you 4 hours so it is enough time to hit up a few other places on 2nd street... so they have that... which is nice.

No, there is no waitstaff inside the actual theater, but that's not a huge deal for me. I love that you can reserve your actual seat online, so there is no chance that you'll be left with a crappy front row seat. (Unless, of course, you reserve that crappy front row seat.) The cost of your ticket also includes free parking in their garage for 4 hours, which is a huge plus when going anywhere downtown. The bartenders make some great craft style cocktails and the food looked tasty, though we didn't try any. Take the websites advice and arrive early in order to get yourself situated with food and drink before heading in to the movie.
