This place was amazing! We love finding the "off the beaten path" places to eat when we travel. Many times we find them from right here on Yelp! This was a hit! You might drive right by it if you aren't looking close, but don't make that mistake. Awesome small town feel. You could be at home here with a large group or a dressed up date night, or like us just a casual dinner. Staff was excellent. They were pretty full and we got one of the last open tables, but we were taken care of immediately. I'll post pictures of what we had, I unfortunately can't remember the names. I know mine had scallops and shrimp in a wine sauce and it was FANTASTIC! We will definitely be back here to try more of the menu next time we come up from Atlanta! OH! They still bring out the entire dessert selection in a tray do you can see exactly what you are getting!

Well this was my second time to eat there and it was a disappointment. My chicken Marsala was fine but I try this dish often when I eat Italian and it did not resemble this dish. The chicken dish I had the first time was quite delicious and is the reason I came back. My husbands dish tonight was not a dish he would choose again. Pasta and meat sauce. The salad was kinda like there was a shortage on lettuce. Gee, it doesn't cost that much to give a hearty serving of Caesar salad. The bread was delicious and warm. Waitress very nice.

This place is excellent. My boyfriend had told me that there was a good little Italian place in town but we had never had the opportunity to try it out. But on a Friday night a few weeks ago, we were finally able to make it in. We had a reservation, but we didn't really need one at the time because it wasn't too busy yet. However we got there fairly early and by the time we left, there were quite a few people waiting. We started off with the Fritura Mista, which was all pretty good. The rice balls were the best thing for sure. I had the Pollo Ripieno as my entree, which is a prosciutto wrapped chicken in a mushroom sauce. It was really great, chicken was moist and not salty at all, which I was kind of concerned about because of the prosciutto. My boyfriend had the Chicken Parmesan, which he really enjoyed as well. After all the food we were super full but took home a cannoli and the special dessert of the night, which was some kind of limoncello cake. We waited a couple hours and had both of them at home and they were both fantastic. This place is just a little hole in the wall and you'll literally drive right past it if you're not looking. But the old saying holds true - "don't judge a book by its cover" - because this place is great. Service is excellent, management walks around constantly to make sure that everything is going well. I would definitely come back again, and would absolutely recommend to anyone that is in the Smyrna area.

My husband and I came here to celebrate my birthday. We had been here during its prior incarnations, but this was our first time at "La Tavola." I was pleasantly surprised! We came on a Wednesday, when they have their couples night out special: 2 dine for $35 (appetizer, 2 entrees, dessert, and drinks). We ordered Frittura Mista, Salmon Livornese (me), Veal Sorrentino (hubs), and Tiramisu. It was all SO delicious!!! The ambience was pleasant. The service was great. (My only complaint was that our server kept checking in on us every couple minutes! It was a bit annoying.) Massimo (chef and owner) stopped by our table before we left. I love being able to tell the chef how wonderful his food was, and how much we enjoyed his restaurant! I'm so glad that Smyrna has a nice dining establishment on its Square!

It's got that quaint, hole in the wall feel. I personally ordered their pepperoni pizza and had a bite of their Caesar salad. Both were good. My favorite was the cheesecake with fresh strawberries it was a perfect way to end the meal.

I was not expecting to like this place, but ended up being pleasantly surprised. It isn't the best italian food ever by any means, but it is pretty damn good for what it is. I had a pizza with pepperoni and bacon. The flavor was very good, and I am picky about my pizza. The only thing wrong with it was that the crust was too flimsy. If they had parcooked the crust before adding the toppings, or used a pizza stone, it would have been perfect. Over all reasonably priced and decent food.

Dude... Yes. This place definitely lives up to the hype! And I didn't even know it was there.. This may end up a little long, bare with me... It doesn't look like much on the outside, which is why I've never been,... But oh my god I wish I hadn't judged a book by its cover. Based on the reviews on here we gave it a try tonight and wow!! So. Damn. Good. From the service, and the wine, to the food,... everything was just great. What we had- I had the special of the evening- appetizer of marinated asparagus and cantelope with some delicious procciutto-- Really good! The asparagus was so fresh and crisp, paired with the sweet, peppered cantelope and then pile on that insanely Devine prosciutto,... Mmmmmm... Yes please. It came with a soup/ salad,.. As normal, and I opted for soup,.. I have no idea what it was called, but it was basically spinach and egg whites? In a pretty basic broth-- not too shabby actually,.. It sounds weird, but I ended up eating over half the bowl. And then the entree-- lobster ravioli with scallops, calamari, and Shrimp, in what I can only describe as 'heaven' as a sauce,... It was out of this world good. I don't even like calamari but I ate almost every bit of it because of that sauce... The BF ordered the Misto di Pesce Portofino- Shrimp, calamari, mussels, and clams in a tomato/ oil based sauce... And his exact words,.. "I'd give it 5 stars if they had seared the scallops." .. That was his only complaint lol,.. So I'll say he enjoyed- especially since he ate every single bit of it. Got a canolli to go, but I'm so damn stuffed I can't even eat it yet- it looks amazing though! ... Mmm.. Ok,.. Maybe I'm going to eat it now. Service- top notch. We will most definitely be back now that we know about this awesome little spot!!

I called to order delivery and was given a phone number for a delivery service. After calling the number I was told to use their website to place orders. While on the website I see that Bami's (the delivery service) only delivers for one restaurant which is La Tavola. Unfortunately, it was grayed out stating "this restaurant is not currently available for delivery." I then called back the delivery number and was told that if I wanted to order over the phone I would be charged an additional $5. Next I called and ordered a white pizza for pickup. When I picked it up I noticed they did not cut the pizza in to slices! Finally after bringing back the pizza to have it cut into slices I tried a bite......it was one of the worst pizzas I've ever had and trust me I eat a lot of pizza!

Okay, so this place is not your typical Italian restaurant. We came here kind of on a whim (we literally flipped a coin) and we are so glad we chose to eat here. The Pollo Ripieno is killer. We liked it so much that we brought our family back. The calamari is delicious and the cheesecake is amazing. We love good food and good service. You will not be disappointed that you ate here!

Small quaint place in the Smyrna downtown. First thing they asked was "Do you have a reservation?" I wanted to say "Are you on Open Table?" No..no restaurant in Smyrna is.. Server was very friendly. Had Veal Parm very good. also had Tiramisu good as well. Owner came out a spoke to clients. Its the right thing to do. Food good Service good Prices very good Go Eat..

We have been here several times and never been disappointed. Food fantastic and service polite and attentive. Very authentic Italian cuisine and flavor but also feels like an American neighborhood restaurant - couples and families all seem to feel at home here. Wine prices very reasonable. Wednesday date night fantastic. We've had their pizza and it reminds of pizza we enjoyed in a neighborhood Milan area restaurant we love. We feel fortunate to have this reasonably priced delicious restaurant in Smyrna. We haven't done it yet but our waitress told us he will customize dishes or even make a special dish if given a few days head-up. BL - we love this place.

Maybe I came in at a bad time, maybe their Fettucinni Alfredo is just not the hook. Sadly this place is average and doesn't live up to it's four and a half stars. I'd say the quality of at least my food is on par with Olive Garden. Which is not really a great thing I may come back one more time to see if it's any better...

Bad food.....bad service....we must have gone at the wrong time I will not lie about a review. The sever was short and rude. The buffet was horrible and most of it was cold. I have the signature dish and it was over cooked and had no flavor.....

  • Brandon P.

The food was ok I was just expecting more after reading all of the great rivews . Me and my girlfriend ate here after I purchased a yelp deal. I had the chicken Marsala it was ok but not as good as what others say in my opinion if I go back I will try something diffrent.

  • Andy B.

I'm slightly conflicted about this because I came here strictly for the chicken Marsala as it's one of my favorite dishes. My date's dish, the lobster ravioli had delicious scallops, pretty good shrimp, and I really didn't care for the lobster ravioli. The lobster seemed slightly rubbery and not all that flavorful. Onto the Marsala, unless there is something I'm not very aware of as far as the potential differences between a Naples Marsala and a northern Marsala, I'm gonna go ahead and come out and say that this isn't Marsala - and this is coming from someone that generally likes a tradish Marsala, then add some heavy whipping cream to the sauce. This one is just too creamy. I could barely detect that the chicken itself was cooked in a little bit of Marsala wine, but the creamy mushroomy sauce just completely dominated. I still gave it 4 stars, though, because I love places like this, and really, all of the food was cooked very well - nothing burned, dry, etc., but unless they change the Marsala sauce, I won't be back. Also, the service was very good, and the owner hugged almost every person that walked through the door. I'm assuming all of the 5 star reviewers really like hugs.

This has become our "Go To" italian restaurant. They have become a part of our Tuesday routine. 1/2 off wine night! I have never had a meal that was less than excellent! Their specials are so wonderful that I am still working my way through the regular menu. If you love italian food.........real italian food, this is the place to come. Or you can buy a ticket to Italy. Yes, it's that good!

    (5)
  • Sandra H.

Had the Chicken Parm . Mmm good. Atmosphere staff and food all get an A. My Date loved the spaghetti and meat balls. The portions were good. Only thing is the salad needed a little more too it.

This place is so great! The staff is wonderful and all the meals tasted fabulous. Our family has been eating there since it opened and has not been disappointed once. Actually, our son always goes home with a tummy ache because he loves everything they serve him and he eats as much as he can. ;)

  • Steve L.

Nashville is challenged when it comes to Italian food in my opinion. This restaurant is no exception. Disclaimer: I lived near several great Italian places in NYC so I am spoiled. That said, la Tavola is still below what I feel should be an average experience. If you have high standards for Italian food, you will likely be disappointed. The recipes aren't traditional (the Marsala so many people rave about is a creamy sauce, for example, rather than a nice, light Marsala wine based sauce). If you are looking for something a little better than Pizza Hut, you will be happy.

What a warm and welcoming family owned restaurant. Everyone cared so much about our experience. They checked in with us without being overbearing at all. Food was absolutely delicious! We had quite a few items to try. Service was very fast and accommodating (especially to allergies). We definitely recommend this place!! If we could, we'd go back with all of our family!

Some how the hubs and I ended up here Saturday night, first time in and it was a good time. Food was good, Ive had better pomodoro but all in all is was an enjoyable evening. Service was a bit slow towards the end of our meal but our server was pleasant. Will possibly go back in a few months.

I entered this establishment a skeptic. When you look at all the 5 star reviews, a pattern exists. 10 of them are the only reviews ever written by those people. 3 more just have 2 reviews and another 3 have three reviews. And they were all perfect? I say 'prove it'. So, I wander in on a Wednesday night. Place is about 1/3 full. Filled with old people, the kind that pull out their address book to make a call on their cell. I usually see that as a warning sign - the only younger people were their with what were probably their parents. Weak start - they are out of the Bardolino wine I ordered. Redemption - I was offered taste of Malbec. It did not suit my tastes (very 'hot', the alcohol overpowered any flavor). So I ordered my second choice, the Montepulciano ($8) which I enjoyed. On the subject of drinks - is Peroni really the best beer Italy has to offer? I entered the place dehydrated apparently as I kept emptying my water glass. The glass was too full of ice cubes to hold much water, but was refilled promptly several times. At this point I am satisfied with the service. Is it Caesar or Cesare? The menu uses both spellings, which technically both are correct but it is still a bit odd to use both in the same menu. The Caesar dressing was almost milky, didn't have enough garlic, and they used too much for my taste. The house salad at other tables looked like the better option. I ordered one of the specials, the pan seared Mahi-Mahi ($18.95). Broth was fabulous. Lots of garlic, added great flavor to the spinach. This dish paired well with my wine. I shouldn't have, but I have a weakness for Tiramisu. It was quite large and very good, but now I'm a bit full. Still, if you have room, or someone to share with, I recommend it. Stephanie was my waitress and she was very good at her job. I assume the Italian guy sitting and chatting with several tables was Massimo. He treats the return customers like friends Random finish - trains really fly past this place. I'm used to the slow crawl near my office, so it was kind of a treat to see it zooming by out the front window. So, a bunch of single reviews got this place on my radar, but the quality is real. If this was near my home, I would be taking the wife there soon.

So lucky to have this gem of a place in Smyrna. Authentic delicious Italian food at a good price. Staff has always been nice as well. This is MUST TRY!!

Excellent Italian food. The Chicken Marsala sauce was one of the best I've had, I'm not big on vegetable based foods, but tried my wife's egg plant parmesan and was impressed. Tried buffet which is small yet, since its not been caught on yet by lunch goers with a longer lunch, but wife loved the Vodka sauce pasta, and the pizza was excellent with the cracker like crust. Will go again and again.

  • Emily B.

The restaurant is family owned and the staff is super friendly and inviting. The food itself is fine, especially for a small-town Italian restaurant. Not fair to compare it to Nashville, but it's definitely a step above other choices in the Smyrna/Murfreesboro area. The desserts were the truly phenomenal part of the meal, besides how friendly and accommodating the staff were. It was pretty busy but no wait on a Saturday night so definitely a good choice if you decide last minute to go out. Overall, I'm sure we will be back and I'd recommend it for an easy no-pressure and affordable night out.

This place is a great hidden gem in downtown Smyrna. We went there for a romantic meal and were blown away by how great the food and service was. We will definately be going back. I wish Smyrna had more places like this.

I have been here twice and both times, I have been extremely impressed. I'll admit - when I found this place on Yelp, I didn't expect Italian in Smyrna to be all that great. The outside of the establishment is unassuming, but you'll find that the inside is quite welcoming and nicely appointed. I made reservations for 2 on a Saturday evening but found that they weren't really needed. I was warned that the servers were "working hard" that night, meaning service might be a bit slow. I had never heard that before so I didn't know what to expect. It was a bit slow but nothing too out of the ordinary. The bread? Fantastic. You'll eat too much of it, undoubtedly. I had the chicken parmigiana and found that it was fantastic - maybe the best I've ever had. The sauce itself was fantastic. I had the eggplant the second time I visited and it was nearly as good. The homemade sangria is a must if they're offering it. I tried some of the veal piccatta and found it to be delicious. Any of the tartuf desserts will be a keeper. The second time I visited, the manager and his wife were coming around and visiting with the guests (on a less busy Friday evening). It was a nice touch when she asked about our dessert and let us know about their specials and lunch buffet. Having a Yelp coupon didn't hurt either time. We'll definitely be back.

Maybe this is the best Smyrna has to offer, but it certainly was not worth the drive from Nashville. Mediocre at best. 5.2.14 edit - I have not been back to La Travola Restorante yet; however, I did want to edit my rating from a two to a three star. I have been off the yelp grid for a while, and was surprised to log in and find four emails from the owner and executive chef. I am quite impressed that he reached out to me in an effort to cure the problem. I must say that there was some sort of carpet work going on at the time we dined, which could have been the reason why everything seemed off. Anyway, I just wanted to acknowledge the fact that the owner is involved and wants to ensure a great dining experience. I appreciate that passion.

Had the Pizza which on Tuesday nights is bye one get one free. I was very good and fresh. The owner and chef came to our table and asked how our meal was and thanked us for coming. I was a very pleasant experience.

AMAZING! My partner and I have traveled to Rome and find many similarities in the authenticity of Massimo's. Pick anything off the menu and you can not go wrong! Chicken Marsala tends to be a favorite of mine. If you are looking for pizza at a great price, the Tuesday special is buy one and get one free; once you have the pizza, you will quickly discard other local pizza chains!

I received a call & email from the owner based on my last review. I decided to give it another try. Boy, am I glad I did! I ate there on 2/15 the day after Valentine's Day. There was a good crowd & atmosphere. There were several specials. My wife had the mahi mahi with mashed potatoes in a truffle sauce. The presentation was so beautiful. I had a smoked chicken pasta with a cream sauce. All I can say is I went on a bad night before and this was some of the best food I've ever eaten. I'm from New Orleans I know good food. Dessert was great & wine recommendation spot on. Will be back. Patronize local businesses.

La Tavola is our favorite Italian restaurant. Chef Massimo takes great care of his customers and the food is excellent. Some items are "standards" and some are his creation. They're all good. Save room for some fried cheesecake or Tiramisu. If you have a problem with anything just let Massimo know and it will be fixed. LaTavola isn't a family restaurant-no 'kids meals' -so it is very pleasant for couples. The best part is that it is not very well known and therefore not crowded.

We enjoyed our dinner. Great service and good food. My favorite is no longer on the menu (Saltimbocca) but asked for it and they happily made it.They were out of both the wines my husband and I asked for but made nice suggestions for substitutions and the wines were good. We will be back soon !

This place is legit. They make everything in house-even the pasta! From the bread to the entree, we were SO incredibly impressed. :))) Thank God we have a great Italian restaurant here locally! We will be returning.

Very authentic Italian dishes. Service was excellent. Decent wine selection. Only negative I would say was that they did not have Compari.

Great food and service. Checked them out for lunch. Very inexpensive buffet had salad plus 3 pasta varieties and different pizzas. All great! Nice thin crispy pizza crust, fresh pomodoro sauce on pasta, rich bolognese, toasted warm, soft bread. You've got to try it!

  • Sarah H.

Perhaps just a teensy bit overpriced for the food and overall experience, this is a little oasis in otherwise cuisine-lacking Smyrna. The bread was a 3, the salad a 4, the meal about a 3 1/2...but the Limoncello cake? A 5+. In fairness, I've been to Italy 5 times so when you say "Italian food" I am snobbishly, admittedly, looking for the real deal! The wait staff was very friendly and accommodating. We will probably visit again.

  • Carrie H.

I was skeptical about this place but I was wrong! We had a lovely meal and a wonderful server! I started with a Caesar salad (it was full size and came included with my entree), we also had warm bread and a garlic herb compound butter that was complementary. The butter was very very tasty!! I had the chicken Marsala, which was good but not traditional. More of a cream sauce then wine. I probably won't get it again, but only because I wanted a wine sauce. This was decently tasty. Chicken should have been seasoned and seared before being sauced.... It had no color on the meat. Pasta was perfect. My fiancé had the pizza.... Very good! All scratch or at the very least, the dough is mixed in house. My only pick here is it needs to be baked on a stone or oven hearth. Great flavors!!!!! We finished with the Belgian chocolate cake and the tiramisu. Cake was spot on, tiramisu didn't have a strong enough syrup. (I think it needed some more booze). Beer prices were awesome.... In fact, all the prices were very reasonable and fair. We will definitely be back!

This place is wonderful! I had the bruschetta, salad, and spaghetti. It was delicious! Our waitress was absolutely magnificent, once she learned that I don't do dairy she ensured that all of my food was dairy free. She even got me some olive oil with garlic and herbs for my bread in place of the butter :) I loved this place and definitely recommend it!

I have been here with my wife 4 times in the last 5 weeks! Finally Nashville has an authentic down to earth family friendly Italian eatery!! Massimo and Linda are great and treat you well!! Great service followed up with great food, authentic not the typical "chain" place, so much better. Little Italy in the form of La Tavola has come to middle TN, try it out!!

  • Lori F.

Pros: Ambiance is nice. It's quiet and relaxing. Decent wine. Chicken Marsala was very good. and the soup was delicious for a cold day. Cons: Seem to be under staffed. The place is rather small so a large loud party can ruin the mood of the place quickly. Overall: If you're in Smyrna and don't want to go to a chain restaurant, this place is worth a visit. There are far worse places to eat.

  • Amber M.

The food was decent but the prices and portions were awful. My sons kids plate had a bigger portion than my 15 dollar plate. The manicotti special for 17 bucks looked awful and was bland. Meatballs were underseasoned. We were never offered bread. The server was attentive and drinks were filled regularly. This wasnt our first time here but will probably be the last.

This food Was fantastic. Fettuccine bolognese, lasagne, vodka penne & spaghetti was the best Italian food I have ever tasted. I just returned from Italy and this is the real thing. If you have ever eaten in little Italy in Boston or New York, this rivals anything they have. You will never go back to poor substitutes like carrabas and the like. There is nothing like this believe me.

We enjoyed our time at La Tavola. The food was very good, if not great. Nice atmosphere and music, and the waitress was upbeat and fun. A little more pricy than my typical preference, but we went because of Yelp's 50% off coupon, which was great to have.

Reviews seemed really great for this place and my bf's favorite dish is Chicken Marsala so I took him. Overall it wasn't bad, but wasn't great. Atmosphere was alright...could use some dimmer lighting and candles or nice tablecloths to make it feel more legit. As it is, the atmosphere doesnt make a strong statement vibe-wise. Service was great-our waiter was very helpful. I requested the lobster ravioli after reading about it in a review and they made it for me even though it wasn't a special that night. It came with some of the best shrimp I've ever tasted (so did the appetizer) and I wish I'd gotten an entree of just those yummy shrimp! It also came with scallops, which were a good size and tasty. Unfortunately, the lobster ravioli wasn't as good as the sides that pepped it up. The texture was strange and the flavor of the sauce was only meh. The portions were generous though! The Chicken Marsala also left much to be desired. It looked more like Chicken Alfredo-I've never seen a Marsala dish with white sauce! I still give four stars for the service and the kindness.

Actually, our son always goes home with a tummy ache because he loves everything they serve him and he eats as much as he can. ;)

What a warm and welcoming family owned restaurant. Everyone cared so much about our experience. They checked in with us without being overbearing at all. Food was absolutely delicious!

A definite "plus" for the Smyrna area! The Chicken Marsala is always good, and the Lemon Gelato for dessert was awesome. Give it a try, folks!

We enjoyed our time at La Tavola. The food was very good, if not great. Nice atmosphere and music, and the waitress was upbeat and fun. A little more pricy than my typical preference, but we went because of Yelp's 50% off coupon, which was great to have.

Some how the hubs and I ended up here Saturday night, first time in and it was a good time. Food was good, Ive had better pomodoro but all in all is was an enjoyable evening. Service was a bit slow towards the end of our meal but our server was pleasant. Will possibly go back in a few months.

Dude...

  • Adriana H.

It's got that quaint, hole in the wall feel. I personally ordered their pepperoni pizza and had a bite of their Caesar salad. Both were good. My favorite was the cheesecake with fresh strawberries it was a perfect way to end the meal.

  • Taylor B.

  • Alan L.

Actually, our son always goes home with a tummy ache because he loves everything they serve him and he eats as much as he can. ;)

Bad food.....bad service....we must have gone at the wrong time I will not lie about a review. The sever was short and rude. The buffet was horrible and most of it was cold. I have the signature dish and it was over cooked and had no flavor.....

The food was ok I was just expecting more after reading all of the great rivews . Me and my girlfriend ate here after I purchased a yelp deal. I had the chicken Marsala it was ok but not as good as what others say in my opinion if I go back I will try something diffrent.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
