    One of the best places we've eaten at since moving to Nashville in 2003. My only regret is I didn't find them sooner. Tonight we experienced the red fish and it was fabulous! The pasta was homemade and the sauce was to die for. The servers are very knowledgeable and the chef KNOWS how to cook. If you plan ongoing to Papas you need cash and your own beverages if you don't want water, tea, or soda. Call for reservations and ENJOY!!!!

    This place was FANTASTIC. We drove to their location out in the country. Fun and beautiful drive through Leipers Fork. Small place, about a dozen tables plus a few outside. The food is the real deal. Have the Deluxe Gumbo, big portion and more stuff in it. Lots of shrimp, crayfish, andouille and more. Perfect. We had the crawfish tails (fried). Then we had the St Jacques with redfish. WOW. Again, perfection. We basically shared dinner with a great couple and so friendly. Service was superb and attentive. We decided on the drive back, best meal in Nashville so far. A few tips. It's small. Not great for big groups, not really built for lots of kids, def make reservation and most importantly... Bring your own stuff to drink!

    Awesome!! Best Cajun food since I was in New Orleans. I had the jambalaya and red fish. Best red fish I've EVER eaten. I go red fishing every year!! This was extremely good!! The chocolate bread pudding was to die for!! I highly recommend this place!!

    My family and I have been coming to this location for about 6 years now. I've yet to ever have a disappointing experience! The food is so great and the staff is extremely inviting and always pleasant. It's a small place, but that's part of the appeal to me. You'll definitely have to get there early if you want to grab a table because they fill up FAST. Just remember to bring a nice bottle of wine or a 6 pack for the wait! (It's a BYOB establishment) If you make it out here, definitely must try the scallops for an appetizer, crawfish étouffée is delicious especially if you get redfish added on top, but no matter what, you have to end your meal with their chocolate bread pudding! In the last couple years, they opened a second location in Franklin, Tennessee if you're closer to the Nashville area and are looking for some authentic Cajun cuisine. It's definitely a bit of a drive to get here, but worth it!

    Great place and super friendly people. The gumbo here is great. I went last Monday and was surprised to learn it was all you can eat. You can get unlimited helpings of most of the entrees on the menu. Executive Chef Jeanine came to our table to share a bunch of stories about the restaurant. She had a great story about the chocolate bread pudding, which she described as "so good, it'll make you kick yo' grandmama in the creek and slap her fo' gettin' wet!" And I don't disagree. FYI-- Cash and check only, BYOB, and call for the hours.

    In the middle of nowhere, a midst staring goats, abandoned tractors and the faint echo of distant banjo music, sits a little yellow trailer covered in Christmas lights. Inside this building I had the best Cajun meal I've ever experienced. We stopped here for dinner on our way back to Nashville after a day of road tripping up and down the Trace. We'd heard stories of tailgating out front while waiting for a table, so we had the cooler ready (the restaurant is also BYOB - beer and wine only, no liquor allowed), but we didn't have a wait at all. I guess no wait is a good thing, but we were actually kind of looking forward to the random experience of tailgating in front of a restaurant in the country. Maybe next time. The menu was written on a chalkboard on the wall, but I don't think it listed everything since we were offered numerous things not on the menu. There's also a special that changes every week. If you only eat one thing - even if you don't like Cajun food (but then why are you here, seriously?) - you must have the CRAWFISH HUSHPUPPIES. They are life changing. You have to make the trek to Santa Fe for them, though, we were told that the Franklin location doesn't have them. Hilariously enough, they want to serve them, but Papa won't give them the recipe. I had the red beans & rice with sausage as my entree... It was amazing and the portion was huge. I devoured as much as I could, but there was still enough left over for a full meal the next day and then some. I also snuck (not so sneakily) several tastes of my boyfriend's special (that's not a euphemism) and it was also delicious. The service was fast and extremely friendly. We probably could have sat there all night talking to the staff if we weren't so exhausted from the long day. The table next to us to be regulars - the waiter even knew their regular order - which was impressive since it sounded like they also drove out from around Nashville. I imagine it's uncommon to be a regular at an establishment that far from home. Just a testament to how great this place is. There was also live music -- a Cajun musician, of course. The whole experience was just awesome. The end. To do my true Yelp duty - the few cons: -The distance, but then again the trip adds to the experience, in my opinion. -The prices. Almost worth it since I got a whole other meal out of my portion, but the prices are steep. -They only take cash! Be warned! It's not like there's an ATM down the street, so come prepared... and prepared enough for your inevitably hefty bill. If you only take one thing away from this rambling review let it be this: CRAWFISH HUSHPUPPIES

    Great place in every way. Never, ever have had a bad meal here. Papa is there every night to sit down and talk with you and answer any questions. Atmosphere is great, leave your Burberry and Kate spade at home, no place for that at Papa's. You won't be disappointed and their brunch is awesome!

    Cajun food, more so even than barbecue, is a territorial cuisine. At times it seems like, unless you were born on a wooden pallet in the middle of the bayou and ate only food that had been stewed together from the worst imaginable parts of reptiles nobody else has ever heard of, you don't have the chops necessary to determine what constitutes a good étoufée. Well, none of those apply to me. But I know what I like, and the fact that you actually searched for Papa's and are reading this review means that you pass *my* acid test, so here you go. There's no easy way to get to Papa's. There are many routes, and some of them will lead you down familiar-seeming yet wholly foreign side routes that alternate cow sheds and millionaires' mansions or perpetually closed service stations with the inevitable rusting tractors parked alongside. But you get there, always later than you expect and always half-mad from anticipation and the hunger induced by the ride. You come for the food and the atmosphere. Here they are, in order. The Food: a cheekier observer than I might suggest that, if you add enough butter, cream, and sausage to a dish, there's not much that can go wrong with it, but that's only part of the story. Eating an entree at Papa's is kind of like digging for buried treasure, though it might actually be more similar to some kind of cruise where you search for exotic sea mammals: you never know what new wonder might surface from the depths. The red beans and rice are laden with secret bits of salty, spicy smoked ham, the pasta dishes reveal tiny, succulent crawdad tails and slices of andouille, and the gumbo... well, who knows what might lurk in there. It is inconsistent--the menu and policies change irregularly, and you might arrive with your heart set on some crawdad corn muffins only to find that they're out that day (or week), or that they're out of the magical sausage that makes the red beans and rice something to write home about, but these inconveniences must be accepted in the context of true gustatory greatness. The Atmosphere: it's a cinderbrick shed out in the Tennessee backwoods that looks like it was run over by a Mardi Gras float. That's the constant. The variable is who you'll find inside. Sometimes just an assortment of pilgrims from Nashville or the towns to the south quietly munching away, sometimes a bunch of boisterous locals loudly swapping stories, songs, and beer, and sometimes (best of all) a gaggle of Frenchified lunatics, fortified by vino and high on the night, shouting bizarre requests at the mortified singers. You never know what you'll get until you go, in a variety of senses.

    I've been here several times and it is always delish!!! Cheese grits with shrimp and a fish filet is my favorite. Boudin balls and red beans and rice are right up there too!!! Friday and Saturday you'll need a reservation. Call a day ahead and they will cook your request if they weren't planning to already. Super nice and friendly. A long drive but soooooo worth it. No credit cards accepted. The main room is so small that it can get quite loud, especially when the "band" is playing. I wouldn't bring my kids because there is very little that's not too spicy for little ones.

    Went here with my Father while I was visiting from Florida. My father lives nearby and has eaten here 5 or 6 times and raves about the place. I had the Shrimp and Craw Fish Etouffee' which was good with a $20 size portion because it was $20. My dad and brother in Law had the Chicken Creole which they both said was OK but not great. Now here is where the fun begins. Withing 2 hours of getting home, almost at the same time, my Dad and Brother in Law became very sick with obvious food poisoning (must of been the chicken), because as I write this two days after my visit, they are still feeling the effects..anyways I feel great so I would give 3 stars, but considering they were almost hospitalized I opted for 2.

    This place is way out there. I thought Leiper's Fork was remote. This is way past that. It's amazing that they are so busy. Where are all these people coming from? I wouldn't guess that there are scores of local residents who want to pay close to $20 an entree. I'm guessing quite a few of the customers had driven an hour or more like we did. The food is worth the drive. I heard the wait was really long, but we got lucky for a Saturday night. It was a rainy day so I guess it kept some people away from the long drive down a poorly lit windy road in the country. We only had to wait about 25 minutes (one of the servers stepped into the parking lot to call us, "Come on n eat!"). Our food was on the table within 10 minutes after ordering. We split 4 plates and 2 desserts (bill came to $110) among 4 people and were all perfectly stuffed by the end (but surprisingly not painfully full). We tried the Red Beans and Sausage, Shrimp Creole, Gospel Creole, and Crawfish & Shrimp Etoufee' with the traditional rue. Our server, Jessica, suggested we get the Etoufee' Jessica style. She adds sea scallops and sausage. Highly recommended! This and the beans and sausage were the best dishes. The Gospel Creole comes with a HOT! warning and a "are you sure?" from Jessica. The story goes that someone tried it early on and said "This is so hot, you'll be talkin to Jesus by the time you're done eatin it" so we were expecting the Scoville level of Hot Chicken. It's not even close to that hot. Still tasty though. The chocolate bread pudding is great, but the syrup tastes like Hersheys. I would prefer some melted dark chocolate, but should you really expect that from a painted cinder block hut way out in the sticks? The live music was great but a little too loud for the small venue. I couldn't hear anything anyone else said except the person right next to me. They have a po' boy night on Tuesdays, which sounds amazing. They are supposedly opening another location in downtown Franklin on April 4th, so I'll surely be down on a Tuesday for some po' boy. The Santa Fe location is worth driving out to for the experience - but maybe just once :)

    Perfect. We drove from Murfreesboro, which is about an hour and a half, just to try this place out. It was delightful. Don't plan to write your review while here though... Santa Fe is pretty far out and I didn't pick up Internet. Being an LSU fan, i loved the yellow and purple building. Please be warned, if your wanting a beer, you need to bring it in yourself. They will let ya drink, but they can't provide it. Bring a cooler and lots of beer. If you forget though there is a little bar up the street that will let you buy it and bring it to the restaurant. Just be warned though. It gets pretty cramped in here as it's pretty small. Its well Worth the drive and the prices. This is true Cajun food...lousianna style at it's best.

    In fairness, the food is fairly good. If you're dying for Cajun, then you probably want to come here. But for the rest of us, it's just not worth the effort! I have a good friend who swears by this place. To hear her talk (and she's a total foodie), this place is Mecca for all that is good. So one night we got a group together and went. Here's how it all went down. This place is set up in a trailer-like establishment in the middle of nowhere. If you live in Nashville, be prepared for a looong drive. I have been noted to drive 45 minutes just because I like a particular location's club sandwich. But I will NOT be (voluntarily) making this drive again! The restaurant is also super tiny and very cramped. By cramped, I mean I am a size four and I could barely squeeze into my chair without asking the person behind me to vacate their spot. Given that this place is small, you're looking at a 1-2 hour wait. That is, if you're lucky. My friend was wise to this fact and brought a cooler full of wine and beer (bring your own). We sat outside at one of the few picnic tables and waited for our name to be called. At 1.5 hours, some of our contingent gave up and left for the long drive back to Nashville. Ironically, they called us shortly after that. I ordered the crawfish étouffée. It was not bad, but frankly I've had better in Oklahoma City. Also, I got my entree about fifteen minutes after the other four people at my table. This might have been more acceptable if I hadn't already been waiting for two hours. They completely messed up the dessert order, and brought two extra desserts that we didn't order, and missed mine. This occurred because I ordered coffee, and they somehow misinterpreted this to mean cobbler. Generally I am a patient person, but by this time, I had already had it. I asked for my coffee again only to be informed that they did not have coffee available, because 1) it is special-ordered from Cafe du Monde, and 2) it was not yet cold enough. First of all, I have been to Cafe du Monde (several times) and it is not that spectacular. I am sure there are other establishments that are equally adept at brewing coffee, even if it comes from a Mr. Coffee maker. Secondly, I had been waiting for TWO HOURS shivering in a blanket outside after dusk and believe me, it was cold enough! I usually wait until the second visit to give a bad review, but I will not be making it in this case. The chef did give us some coupons for the trouble. Anyone want them? EDITED TO ADD: My husband didn't hate this place nearly as much as I did. In fact, I might surmise that he thinks I am being slightly mean. So I will leave on a positive note: they have a live musician (great guitar!) and the chef sat behind us for a while--he seems very nice. Very intimate atmosphere. Still not going back.
