Tribe is one of Nashville's few android bars. This is where robots come to hang out after a long day working at the HOMO SAPIENS INC. assembly lines where they build human babies from flesh and blood. It's not an easy task (ever tried filling a heart with blood when it's still beating?) and all androids need some love. Saunter in and an immaculate android will attest if your memory circuits are valid by scanning your bar code. Once that is done, you can mosey over to the Dexter's Lab where eager roboticists, dressed in just their circuits, will fill you with an amazing selection of libations - engine oil, solder lead, capacitance flux (if that's your thing! eww), and a host of other liquids. Tribe is so cool they even sell that silly intoxicant called BEER that all human adults imbibe in and then find themselves reproducing without will. BEER, of course, stands for Beverage for Emancipated and Emaciated Robots. It was designed to rejuvenate malnourished and poorly soldered robots of Detroit. But when Playboy Unit 453 discovered its titillating side effects, well, the rest is history. And you can drink some of that history in cheap silicon based containers called glass. One corner of this establishment houses two flat cushioned panels on which are scattered many colorful balls. Androids walk around it, brandishing long sticks. (The inside joke is that the length of the stick is proportional to the pleasure unit of the android, but everyone knows that's not true!) For a few pieces of metal, you can shoot these balls into pockets apparently for some sort of subtle gratification. As the night progresses, androids begin to connect to each other and exchange software (and hard..ware), The synchronized collection of sound waves that the humans call music begins to increase in intensity, drowning out any possible conversation. More androids barge in, bringing with them well proportioned female human units and then it gets really wild. When you exit Tribe after a hard night of partying, the memory circuit validating android will normally reset your memory banks. So don't be alarmed if you wake up the next day and wonder where you were the previous night!

Tribe was a nice atmosphere. The bartender was super friendly. The drinks were strong. There's pool, so that's entertaining. I just didn't like the show tunes playing on the tv/sound system -would have liked a juke box. We went on a Sunday night so it was pretty dead.

Always a blast to see so much pretentiousness and cosmetic/skin-deep beauty. Do keep in mind thier drinks are truly DA BOMB! Will makes "The Skippy" and Gabby is the proprietor of "Splash"....two sweet fruity drinks perfect for a happily "gay" night out that will have u feeling ever "gayer" after two! Patio for smoking, couches for lounging AND they serve you Suzy Wong menu anywhere in the bar till late night. How can you lose?

This gay bar is real cute and the bar tending staff showed their Nashville charm to this boy from NYC. You can even order food from Suzy Wong's which is actually connected to this large bar! It's a fun gay bar with friendly staff and I'd definitely go back!

A great place to go to grab a bite to eat, play trivia and pre-game before you go over to Play and go crazy.

Wednesday night. 11:30pm. Craving a nightcap. Question: What's a broad to do? Answer: She and her friends (gay and straight) head to Tribe for fun tunes, great service, wine, and good times. $6 will score you some Merlot while Madonna music videos (and RuPaul too) on the TV. The crowd is lowkey and comfy. I dig it.

Hmm, I wasn't wowed. I honestly didn't expect amazing things from a gay bar in Nashville, and Tribe definitely met those expectations nicely. It's not so much the bar's fault. The venue was spacious, decorated well enough, and had a huge bar with strong, reasonably priced drinks. But the place was DEAD. I mean, my group of four was the largest group in there by far. I think we actually came close to doubling the number of patrons in the place on a Friday night. It seems to speak more to Nashville as a city, as I met plenty of gay people out at "straight" bars, while the actual gay bars were basically empty. I actually like that, but it just doesn't bode well for the gay bars.

Like it's sister establishment next door, Play, Tribe is easily one of the nicest gathering spots in the city, regardless of your scene. It's obvious as soon as you walk in the door that the owners set out to impress. The staff is always friendly and also easy on the eye. You will easily find a good crowd on the weekend. The music videos range from the 70's to current, and the VJ's are great about making requests. It helps to tip them! Wednesday night is traditionally the busiest night during the week because of the great drink specials-- it's colloquially referred to as "Welfare Wednesday". Their Sunday Showtunes night is equally well attended. After a weekend of fun, I've often relaxed on the mezannine and held court on Sunday. It's a relaxed evening with the VJ showing musical clips from television and movies, in addition to traditional musical clips. It's always fun to be in the middle of a room of strangers singing happily together-- there is a built-in comradery. Other nights there are fun too-- trivia, comedy night and karaoke. A good friend refers to Tribe as our "country club" and I couldn't agree more.

Holy crap - I had so much fun at Tribe. The group of us occupied the back of the place. Drinks were decent though the music was awesome. Really cool how the music videos of the songs played on tv screens around you. Kind of mesmerizing. And to boot the servers were shirtless and no cover.

Came here to continue my birthday celebration and enjoyed it. The place was modern, clean, and had nice strong drinks. The bartender was quick to serve us and we had a cozy table with a nice view of the bar and of what I presumed to be a dance floor. We didn't stay long, but I enjoyed my drink and the venue itself. Would definitely come back at a later hour to see how crazy it gets.

Always have fun at Tribe!! The bartenders are HOT and make a mean cocktail. We are there at least once or twice a week and LOVE to go for Showtunes Sundays!

Tribe is the bar, in my opinion, is one of the best bars I've ever been to - bar none. The atmosphere, the bartenders, the drinks, the music and the food - all fantastic. The facilities are immaculate and the bathrooms are nice and usually very clean. But, like every place - there are times to go that are better than others. So, let me recommend this: If you are someone who likes to go to a bar late - don't go to Tribe. Tribe is a bar, not a dance club. You'll likely see people in there until around 10:30 - 10:45. Then you'll notice people start to filter out and around 11pm its pretty much dead. This is due to the dance bar next door, Play. They have a show that starts at 11. So, the way my friends and I handle things are we go to Tribe first - usually around 9 or 930. Have a few drinks there - listen to music, chat, whatever. Then around 11 we filter out to another bar. Sometimes Play, sometimes some of the other bars down church street. But it is NOT a good place to be late - unless you enjoy sparse crowds. Now, onto the drinks and costs associated with them: I usually get a Mandarin Vodka with some cranberry juice and that runs me 6.50. Sometimes I get a vodka-red bull. They will open the red bull for you and charge you for the whole can and sometimes give you the rest of the can after they make the drink. However, you can ask them to keep the other half for you so your next drink will cost less (since you already paid for the red bull). They do have drink specials for happy hour(s). Its best to check the website tribenashville.com for events and drink specials. Currently on mondays they have SIN night (Service Industry Night) - 3 dollar drinks and 5 dollar appetizers. Wednesdays they have 2 dollar well and Smirnoff Drinks and on sundays they have 5 dollar pitchers from 4-10pm. But that is always changing. Also, I should mention - it is 21 and up, non-smoking inside and no cover. If you are there on a weekend night - It can be difficult to get a drink. However, I have a system that always seems to work: Go to the bar just outside of the main room. Usually there aren't as many people at this bar and you can get served faster. Also, if you don't know good bar etiquette yet - here is a tip. Go to the bar with cash or card in hand - keep your eye on the bartender until he looks at you and when he does - smile. He'll then say something like "Just one sec" and finish doing whatever he is doing and then come to you. If you aren't making eye contact they won't know to come to you. So, don't get upset if they pass you over. Always try to make eye contact. For 2010 Tribe was also voted in the Nashville Scene (a local independent newspaper) best gay bar, best pick up bar, best place to meet a man, best martini, best dj, best bartender and even best lesbian bar! So, you can see its a great place to go!

I love going to Tribe whenever I have a chance. One, the service and drinks are pretty good. And two, it is always great to see that random protester that has a sign that says, "Let's put the CHURCH back into Church Street!". Makes a young lady giggle I might say. I would have to say this is not my first choice for dancing. The music and scene at PLAY is much better for that. Tribe is a much better place to grab a drink and talk to some people. It was a little slow that Saturday night, but I do not know if that is the case for every night.

  • Zeb M.

A very hip and contemporary gay bar. Not the first choice for dancing (you can do that next door at Play), but this is the place to go when you want to have a few drinks and maybe even play some pool when a table is open. They also have different events happening, so be sure to check that out online before you go!

Gonna write the same review as I did for PLAY because I went to both places in one night ... So much fun! I may have had one of the best times I have ever had at this venue! (Play/Tribe) ... DJ is great .. dance floor is hoppin .. people are pretty and the drag shows are the best thing ever! Bartenders are all nice and it's in a great location (NOT DOWNTOWN). Only gripe is cover is a little steep ... I'm a girl .. this is a gay club .. so an $8 cover for OVER 21 on a FRIDAY ?! Fridays aren't "going out" nights in Nashville .. I think it should be $5. But I LOVE this place!

We hit up this spot after a long day of intense discussions. We really enjoyed ourselves and I think that even our couple of straight friends who came along for the ride enjoyed themselves. A couple of the stalls didn't lock in the bathroom. The drink I had seemed to be a little weak BUT I did have some drinks before heading out that evening. The door man was super sweet and the manager went out of his way to be welcoming. Sometimes gay clubs can be a little uppity and bourgie. I hate that kind of vibe. This place had a few of those types but also some darling dykes (I enjoyed talking with my Nashville peers) hanging out also. My friends and I all had a blast- dancing, not dancing, chilling and laughing. It was a good spot!

One of my first nights out in Nashville, & a friend of mine too me to Tribe. We had Ultimate Orgasm drinks, which tasted like chocolate milkshakes - YUM!!!! There was quite a unique scene at Tribe, & the music was definitely throwback style (think Madonna & Toni Braxton!).

I get the feeling that Nashville gays like their one-stop shops. I appreciated the fact that you could visit the restaurant, the video bar, the pool table, the smoking room, the non-smoking room, etc. all in one place. The clientele was very diverse, but on a Friday night, maybe the space was too big for the number of people present. It seemed kind of empty. The next night was busier, but it still lacked energy.

Tribe is my favorite bar in Nashville. The combination of the food, location, crowd, and price can't be beat. Lots of good reviews here already, but I'll add that they have two pool tables and you can usually get a game within 10 to 20 minutes.

This place may not be what you think of when you think of a gay bar. That may be good or bad, depending on your perspective, but Tribe is definitely a mainstay of the Nashville gay scene. I think the place is laid back and friendly. Some guys find it a little uptight. I think it depends what you are looking for. Since gay bars are usually frequented by a particular segment of gays (bears, twinks, leather), it may not be your cup of tea. Personally, I think it's both classy (not a backroom kind of place) and laid back. I'm not usually going there to pick anyone up, just to enjoy a beer or two with friends (or just people watch). This is the first gay bar I ever went in, so I have a little soft spot for it, but it definitely stands up on its own merits. Really friendly bartenders (Loy, Stevn, Heath) who will all get to know you and your drink if you come in often. It's a video bar so there's music always thumping. Lots of theme nights (Madonna, Prince) and parties (Memorial Day, 4th of July) as well. The bar and adjoining restaurants definitely support and give back to the community which is great. Beer on tap (including the recent addition of Blue Moon), drink specials, musical sing-alongs on Sunday, tv showings, no cover charge!..there's a lot going on at Tribe. Oh, and thankfully Tribe decided to go no-smoking which is great...smokers you can go outside to the patio to light up. Since Nashville seems to be losing its gay bars at an alarming rate, I encourage everyone to come out and support Tribe (and the other bars that are left). Yes, straight people; you are welcome to come in, too.

4th Stop on Dance Recon 2011 before heading into Play. Finally the first clean surroundings of the evening and a nice strong drink. Nice bar in the middle and a good vibe but the place did feel a bit like a hotel lobby to me, albeit one with semi naked peeps. Friendly welcoming service, nice mixed crowd. No cover to get in.

i liked the bar set up and atmosphere - but the bartenders need to go. They spend more time socializing with each other than waiting on customers. Customers are waiting for drinks or to place an order yet they are talking with each other - taking their time. If they hustled and focused on the customer, this could be a great place.

Typical gay bar. Good music, they were cool with letting us move tables to create small dance floor. The food is pretty good, drinks regular. No cover charge, next door at play they charge $8 and keep your id

Tribe is fun. I've had a blast every time I've been here. My friends always tries to get me to go on Thursdays, when they have a $5 Absolut martini night (any flavor you want, apparently). The atmosphere is definitely gay bar, but it's an open and friendly one and they don't mind having girls or straight guys around. The bartenders often bartend in just their bare chests and I'm told on Saturday nights, just their tighty-whities, so if you're into that sort of thing... The decor is appropriately tasteful and trendy, as you would expect, and it looks like there are many fun things going on. The music ranges from techno-dance to musicals (they have a musical night thing on Sundays I believe) and of course they play old standards like Madonna and Depeche Mode.

Tribe is a very attractive place. It's nice that there's real food available on the premises as well. The bartenders have always been fairly friendly and attentive as well. The only caveat is that, in my opinion, it's best to visit Tribe in a group because it has always seemed somewhat difficult to strike up a conversation with anyone else. It seems that most people are part of groups and really don't chat with others, even others sitting at the very large and attractive bar. I've heard that late at night, it's not always that way. I admit that most of my visits have been at happy hour or a little later, so maybe I'll give it a try sometime nearer the witching hour. :-)

  • Mariela C.

Tribe is a great place to get a drink for just about anyone (who is OK with the fact that it's a gay bar). Definitely more gay men than anyone else, but its not exclusive! On any given night you can see straight couples, gay couples, straight singles, hodge podge groups, etc. The set up inside is pretty great and you should be able find somewhere to hang out that makes you happy. Whether it's the main bar, back bar, bar tables by the dance floor, group tables, or outdoor patio, it's definitely a great place to do the usual bar rounds. If you look friendly and are sitting at the bar expect someone to chat you up; you have not idea how many hysterical conversations I have had with gay boys who have left me mid sentence to chase someone more their type! Though the dance floor is not usually food, those that do cut a rug are usually ridiculously amusing.

This is by far one of my favorite places in Nashville. It is a "gay bar" but that doesn't mean that you have to be gay to go in and enjoy yourself. It is very casual, yet quite upscale at the same time. Even the smokers are not relegated to freezing in some outside corner. The staff is very good (Brandon is a great waiter) and the drinks are great (check out TJ, he makes some of the best!). I highly recommend Tribe for meeting some people and having a good evening out.

First off..anyone can go to tribe. Its just a great place for a cocktail. The place is a large video bar. They have a smoking bar and a non smoking bar. The bartenders are usually lame and the drinks arent that strong unless you get the right bartender. They have really cool events and its a great place to go out if you dont feel like getting all sweaty...on the dance floor that is. Have fun kids.

After a full night of food, drinks and great company, we decided to bring the party to Tribe. I was told about this place through friends, prior to visiting Nashville. What I liked about the place was the warehouse ceilings and wooden panels. You get the country type feel and the trendy warehouse club ambiance at the same time. The bar area is huge and offers a lot of seating. The drinks were inexpensive and the full bar offered all sorts of spirits, wine and beer. The music was great and set a nice trendy mood. What I did not like was the caddiness of the bartenders. At one point, my party got a few stares and even some, what seemed to be, crap talking from two of the bartenders. Super turn off. Here's my thoughts: Not a place to be caddy. Tribe is great, nothing like LA and Vegas bars I'm used to and frequent. I appreciated their timeliness with drink orders however, the snickering and talking under breathes could have been prevented. All in all, this place was ok. For lack of the other gay bars in the area, I will certainly return for another experience. Hopefully the next time we will be welcomed with more of a personable company.

It's the GO-TO-Gay bar in Nashville. The bartenders are great but the clientele. If you are here alone visiting, its better to go somewhere else (a couple of blocks down the street). So much pretentiousness and clicky-ness for a small town!

One thing I like about Nashville is that there is a strip, where there are a lot of gay establishments near each other. One bar on this strip is called Tribe. I had never been before, so we decided to check it out. It has an upscale feel about it. I saw a little diversity in the population in race and in age. The drinks were good. If you feel like being in a classier place, this is the place for you. They were having some event called post office, in which you wear a number and people write you anonymous messages. We didn't participate since we are both in relationships. Interesting idea, though. The game was hosted by some drag queens. The bartender was friendly. Next door, they have a drag'n brunch. I'd like to try that next time I'm in Nashville. I think it may be the same owner, since you could get to one from the other, and it was being advertised in Tribe.

Tribe is perfect for so many occassions! I particularly love the Sunday afternoon showtunes singalong, with cheap pitchers and very cheap long islands. The singing can get loud, but it's such a fun time. Be sure to bring tip money for the DJ, or your favorite rendition of Don't Cry for me won't get airtime. It's also the perfect spot for a night cap after a tasty meal at Suzy Wong's. We recently did the Tribe and Play event for New Year's, and while Play is fun, I much prefer the low key, friendly and comfy atmosphere at Tribe.

  • Matthew S.

So, I got dragged to Tribe the other day. As some of you may be aware, this is a gay bar. Being straight, I was a little worried that when I walked in my outfit would be critiqued by a bunch of Queer Eye guys with fruity cocktails. I could not have been more wrong. This place is laid back and classy. While there are a lot of gay men there, I did not feel at all out of place at all. I made some new friends and had some great drinks. TJ is an amazing bartender. He served some really strong drinks with great flare. I have heard mediocre reviews on some of the other bartenders, so look for him. He also happens to be straight and the straight ladies there were drooling over him when he took his shirt off. So girls, if you are looking for a relaxing, fun place to hang out where you won't get hit on and there is A LOT of eye candy...this is the place. But if you all come, it won't really be a gay bar anymore. I think I'd be OK with that.

I went on a Friday night a couple of weeks ago to check it out based on all of the reviews I've read on Yelp. The decor of the bar is great and the doormen holding open the doors for you as you enter and exit is a nice touch. There are lots of sitting areas both in the main room, the raised main area and even in the next room (which I learned is how you get to Suzy Wong's). And yes....the bartenders are definitely attractive. On the night that I went they were doing a rendition of the old "Post Office" game, which everyone was able to play.....for a $5.00 fee. In their defense the fee enabled you to get into Play next door for free. Now for the deduction of the two stars. During my stay an announcement was made that if you paid the $5.00 to play "Post Office" you could get in for free. What wasn't said was that you needed to obtain a pass to actually get into Play for free, and I didn't find out until I actually went next door and was told (rather rudely, but that's in my Play review) about it. Furthermore, I didn't find the people here really friendly. I found the clientele to be rather cliquish and not wanting to start up a conversation, even when approached. There were one or two people there that were friendly, but overall I did not sense the friendliness and didn't feel welcomed there. Granted I'm not expecting the red carpet to be rolled out or everyone to shout "WELCOME!" at the top of their lungs, but a few of the mean "what-the-hell-are-you-looking-at" looks weren't necessary. Would I go back? Don't know. Maybe that particular Friday was an off night.

Came on a Monday night for the drag show and it was so much fun! The bartenders are super friendly and great. It was a pretty diverse crowd and there were a good amount of people there for a Monday. The interior is very modern and classy. It seems pretty large so it must be fun on Fridays & Saturdays too. Will never forget the moment when the power went out in the middle of the show and all the drag queens freaked out hahaha.

Nice bar located downtown, the bartenders think they're hot but they are not.the bar back was running around doin all the work, and when you're a bartender maybe you should have a little personallity and smile instead of having a constant bitch face.i won't be coming back to this bar and it's sad bc the bar was cute and actually clean..it's just the bartenders..try hiring some hot straight guys to bartend.

I went here one night with someone that I had just met and she was friends with almost everyone that worked there. They were very friendly especially the bartender on our side. Everyone was so cute and looked like they enjoyed working there which is nice. I enjoyed people watching. I plan on being back because I know they would be friendly to me again even if I went without her.

So. Many. TVs. So. Many. Music. Videos. I found myself feeling rather "deer in headlights" - I haven't watched music videos since MTV actually played them (which was like in college 20 years ago) - and then they stopped playing videos and I have no idea where people watch them now except maybe on YouTube but who has time for that? Oh - wait - my 14 year old step-nephew. I digress. I had a killer lemon drop - fresh lemons - and listened to the end of the pub trivia night while staring at some crazy music videos I have never seen before (I'm so out of the loop on pop music!). It was mostly men and the bartender suggested I go next door to Play... (see my other review). Tribe itself is pretty big - with some larger rooms split up - a nice big U shaped bar and lots of cute bartenders who spend a lot of time dancing and showing their stuff. It was just as entertaining as the videos. I'd happily return - nice bar and good vibe.

Nice bar with super cute and friendly bartenders. Like that they have an outdoor smoking section that's heated. Pool tables and great mixed crowd. Lots of fun.

A very hip and contemporary gay bar. Not the first choice for dancing (you can do that next door at Play), but this is the place to go when you want to have a few drinks and maybe even play some pool when a table is open. They also have different events happening, so be sure to check that out online before you go!

  • Robert C.

  • Adam B.
