Do not be fooled by the location or outside appearances. This place is incredible. Easily the best Indian food we've had in Nashville. The buffet was great. Variety of dishes - vegetarian, chicken, lamb, and goat. Also dishes from different regions, which is nice. The breads were of course wonderful. Price (at least for the buffet) is definitely reasonable for the amount and quality of the food. It's a bit out of the way for me, but I'm sure I'll be back!

This is our 2nd trip to Nashville and we tried two different Indian restaurants during our first trip which was really nothing great and unfortunately could not remember the name of the restaurant. However, this time we tried Taj and the food was really good. I absolutely loved the chicken kurma and goat curry. Lenthils and sambar was awesome too. Will definitely go back if we come to Nashville again.

We just had the buffet on a Saturday, but it was great. The sauces were not overspiced, and the naan was plentiful. As others have said, more poofy than normal but still light. We have a child with a dairy allergy and the staff was very helpful in pointing out which dishes in the buffet line were safe for him. I'd love to go back and try dishes off the menu next time. I'm fairly confident that they are all good.

Great Indian food! New favorite beating out Sitar. Naan was superb. Service great an friendly. Has lunch buffet, but ordered off menu. Large portions. Lamb very tender and tasty.

The food was delicious. We missed the buffet by half an hour so I can't comment on it. We ordered from the menu instead. The food was fresh and spicy! Absolutely delicious. The waiters were all helpful, courteous, and very patient in spite of the language barrier. Oh yeah, the owner has gorgeous paintings on the walls. It's a nice touch to an otherwise understated appearance. The Chicken Achari was so spicy but I couldn't put my spoon down in the beginning. It ended up being too much for me to finish in that one sitting. The Appetizer for Two is worth it if for no reason other than to try something different. Fried onions, potatoes, and some other stuff that I didn't recognize. The classic Chicken Marsala was smooth and creamy. I could eat that stuff all day every day. We tried a lot of the naan and other breads and they were so different. I will take a few more of my friends here as I think they would enjoy this place. It's off by itself in a plaza (the building next to it is still under construction).

We were in Nashville for a day and craved Indian food. Well, not only there is an Indian restaurant in Nashville, it is a fantastic one. The menu is huge, and among other things they do feature an Achari curry - one of my favorites and a rare find. It was delicious, as well as rogan josh. Portion size was very generous. Garlic naan was one of the best I've tried, even though they should really cut it in pieces. The interior design looks very elegant and upscale, and the place is very clean and nice.

A girl friend and I met for lunch here during the work week, we were the first anxious customers in the door at 11am for the lunch buffet. The service is very attentive and we were not disappointed to discover a spread of freshly prepared dishes, most were made with either chicken or were vegetarian and all of them were flavorful. On my second visit there were more lamb dishes, which was disappointing for me since I don't eat lamb, but every thing else was still delicious. The service is good and it appears to be a popular spot for lunch as it continued to fill up through lunch hour. If I were well versed in Indian cuisine I might be able to share the names of the various items available, however I'm not, so I can only say they appeared very traditional and were complex in flavor. If you aren't one who is familiar with the wide array of Indian dishes, you may be intimated by the selections which aren't always clearly labeled. However if you're adventurous and love good food, go for it! My only wish is that they offered a bit more dishes to choose from, but this is a small place and given the array of flavors it's certainly worth the $10 per person and a nice break from the usual choices in this area.

Maybe I just don't get it. Or maybe there's a lot of bandwagon reviews here. Or maybe it's just really not that great. If this is the best Indian restaurant in Nashville, then all the other Indian food that I like must not really be Indian. The service was cheerful and friendly, but the buffet left much to be desired. Lack of variety, lack of the most popular Indian dishes, and a complete lack of flavor in what was there. I seriously might as well have just had some wet basmati rice.

Excellent food. Good service. The methi malai mutter was heavenly creamy and scrumptious.

Checked out this place today and were not disappointed! Delicious food, nice atmosphere and good service. Garlic naan was awesome. We shared the Tandoor Mix and Chicken Tikki Masala and both were awesome. Highly recommend!!!!

Yep. Best I've ever had, Chattanooga, chesapeake, Norfolk, Missouri, this is the best I've had in all of these states... In credible... I'm Impressed. The tunduri chicken is actually amazing all the way through...

Oh my, this restaurant is AWESOME!! The cashmere chicken one of my favorites and the vegetables are like butter. Prices vary but are pretty decent depending on what you order.

Yeah man!!!!! Why have I just visited this spot and I've live near it for years!?!!?! Mighty tasty meal. This will become a staple on the family restaurant "menu". So many choices, so much food to enjoy. And the nan!

Most of the reviews are for the buffet and looks like that is the best option offered by Taj. We had a dine in and it was medocre at best. I was highly disappointed by the lukewarm water! when I asked for chilled water, waiter actually got me a glass full of ice, really!! Paneer masala had too much food color (hopefully approved by FDA!), vegetable jal farozi has been modified so much by the chef that it should have different name, dal tadka had burned tadka on it. I must complement them for making very good chapati and naan. I will try some other place in Nashville, TN for Indian food just because I have faith that it is not that difficult to make good Indian food.

Best I've had in Nashville since the Peacock on Church St closed. Have had better in CA, but that's too far to go. :-)

We have been wanting to try this restaurant for some time. Glad we finally did! The garlic naan is light, fluffy and flavorful! Service was good. Good samosas. Hubby had extra spicy chicken achari and declared it his new favorite Indian dish - quite hot!! I had chicken tikka masala - also delicious. We will come back again.

This is the ad best indian restaurant that I have ever tried. Going back tonight while visiting. It was magnificent. The prices were good, service great and atmosphere nice. It was a feast to be remembered. Go - I am picky and it was awesome!!!!!!

as good as it get in nashville for indian food. this is an authentic place, run by natives of india, making true indian food, can get spicy to the limit. I recommend this place for to go. The chicken korma is a favorite of mine.

This is by far the best Indian food in Nashville. I dream about their Chicken Cashmere. It's so good that I eat it cold for breakfast the next morning. I've also tried the Lamb Biryani, palak paneer and the mutter paneer. All are equally delicious. Always get the garlic naan and all the sauces they have to offer. You won't be disappointed. The only complaint I can even muster is that the entrees can take time to come out. But who cares? They give you crispy bread and sauces to keep you satisfied.

Anyone who knows me knows I love food. It's kind of my thing. A lot of my friends ask me before they ask Google when they have a food-related question. That being said, I would like to preface my review by stating that Indian is basically the one cuisine I know nothing about. I don't really know what anything is beyond 'curry', which I'm really only familiar with because I'm a huge fan of Japanese curry. Even after eating at Indian restaurants a number of times, I never seem to recall the names of anything. I do know that the bread is 'naan', and that the naan here is really good. Hot, fresh, delicious. The rest of the food was fantastic too, as I will explain in my itemized list. I had the lunch buffet. -The stuff that looked like 7-layer Mexican dip but was definitely not 7-layer Mexican dip: It was pretty tasty when eaten with the naan. I've never had this at another Indian place so I have no idea how common of a dish it is, but I did enjoy it as a starter. -Brown stuff with lamb: The brown stuff with lamb was delicious. Wonderfully spiced, with just a hint of hotness. It is easily in the top 5 brown meat-containing substances I've had at Indian places, and I can't wait to go back for more. -Brown stuff with vegetables: It was pretty good, but I prefer the brown stuff with lamb. It didn't have the spicyness of the other brown stuff. -Green stuff with chunks of assorted things: This was really good too; I ended up going back for seconds. It was definitely better than similarly colored things with similar chunks at other Indian restaurants. -Bright red chicken: Now THIS was the showstopper. Any time I go to an Indian place I'm always sure to sample the bright red chicken, and this was the brightest, reddest, tastiest chicken I've had so far. Nice and tender, yet with a pleasant firmness that gave a lovely contrast to the other tasty but soft dishes of many colors and chunks. -Lightly breaded & fried slices of a vegetable that I'm 30% confident in calling eggplant: These were really good; basically like tempura. I was amazed at how crispy they were, considering they were sitting out on a buffet table. -Cold bright orange desserty stuff with fruit pieces in it: I have no idea what this is called. It looked like melted Velveeta with canned fruit salad added to it. It was extremely tasty, and made a perfect light finish to the meal. I'm guessing it was some sort of canned fruit concoction with cream added to it, but the end result was delicious! All in all it was a bunch of delicious food for a really great price. The lunch buffet format was perfect for Indian-food-ignorant people such as myself, as it gives an opportunity to try a variety of things without having to take a blind guess at ordering a menu option.

Excellent food - this is my second time here in 2days, so hopefully that speaks to something! My friend is visiting from out of state, and in her exact words - "The Chicken Tikki Marsala was the highlight of my trip." This place is out of the way, but definitely worth the trek!!!!!

  • Nazanin R.

They have renovated the restaurant, so it looks fancy! But the same delicious menu! Never disappointed! Staff are nice andddddd always helpful when you are debating between a classic choice of chicken tikka masala or a brand new experience of Navartan korma! If you can't handle mango habanero sauce on your wings! DO NOT order "medium" in their scale of "spicy-ness" overall a great cozy restaurant in the very corner of an old (used to be) shopping plaza!!

  • Josh P.

Why can't I give 10 Stars? This is by far the BEST Indian food my fiancé and I have ever had. Everything was so flavorful and nice and spicy! The naan is fantastic and the service was great! Very friendly staff and inviting, clean atmosphere. The chicken korma and navratan korma are to die for, which I think I'm going to do right now :\ or maybe its just my food coma setting in..... wish we brought a designated driver lol. It was so good for us that we actually did something we have never done... Left a $100 tip! You only live once and people need to know they are appreciated after a good job.

Best Indian food in Nashville! Authentic super flavorful. I'm a bit of a food snob especially when it comes to Indian food, lived in LA for most of my life and got to experience some pretty awesome and authentic Indian food. Since moving to Nashville I tried many of the places people recommended downtown such as Sitar, Woodlands, and Bombay Palace and they all paled in comparison to what I had back home. My husband even got sick from some of those places. I had heard from several of my friends that if I wanted great Indian food to go to Taj and boy were they right! We went during their lunch buffet and they have a very good variety and plenty of vegetarian options. I tried some of everything and was very impressed , their tandoori chicken was some of the best I've had. I can go all day about how yummy the food was but ultimately if you're looking for good quality and authentic Indian food, I highly recommend Taj!

I'm picky about indian food! I can't believe this place is around the corner from me. All the sauces are provided that I'm usually fumbling to describe to waiter...free (mint), red (tart/sweet), and the really tart pickled something! Pompidam (spelling) and naan provided! Loved!!!

Ok, just boring old chicken tikka masala tonight with some garlic nan and onion pakoras. Asked them to turn up the heat a bit, spice-wise. Rates with the very best I've ever had and I've had Indian food all through the states and Europe. Service was friendly. Not the best atmosphere but certainly not the worst! This has become my favorite Indian restaurant in Nashville.

This is the best Indian food in Nashville. The flavoring is perfect and the portions are enough to last. I loooooove this place. One of the most interesting things about the this place is the extensive menu. They have it divided between northern and southern Indian cuisine. This is the first restaurant where it was divided by area and I liked it! This place is perfect. It's tucked away in a deserted strip mall and when you enter the restaurant, it's gorgeously designed. The staff can be a bit slow and if you have a group, tell the server in advance. Another thing about the food. When they say medium, they mean medium. When they say hot, you bet your sweet tail it's going to be hot. The exceptions being the cream based dishes. If there's three or more of you, I highly recommend the bread basket. You get to try all the breads and all of them are tasty. I could go on and on, but bottom line-go there and eat it! I don't see how you can regret it.

This is hands down the most authentic Indian I've had in Nashville...possibly even in the U.S.! Reminds me of the better Indian restaurants in London, where my wife is from. She also lived in India and was extremely excited to find this place. We ordered the chicken kahrai, which was amazing. The fresh naan, papadums, chutneys and chicken pakora were also fantastic. Can't wait to go back!!!

The best Indian food I've EVER had. I've lived all over the United States, and Indian food is one of my favorites. I don't know what they put in their food, but it taste like heaven. The atmosphere is great too--deep, rich purple and grey walls and dark wood accents. They actually just recently did these changes (I've been there enough to watch the renovations occur, ha!) I love basking in the look of it when I eat it. The tables are very classy, but you don't feel like you need to dress up. I've gotten take out from here about a dozen times, and eaten in a few times now. I can say, in all seriousness, that EVERYTHING I've had here is FREAKING DELICIOUS. I'm digging the Methi Malai Mutter right now. UGH, so good. My boyfriend loves the Chicken Tikka Masala. The weekend buffet is GREAT too! Stop by if you're not sure what you like, because they have a good spread. And each day always has different food, lots of variety!! One of my favorite things too is they serve these flat chip things (Have no idea what they are called!) It's like a large tortilla, but it's so flavorful!! I am in love with them. They come with take-out whenever we get it. Another thing I loved is the first time we got take out, I noticed that the colors of everything are so GORGEOUS. Take-out comes with a giant tortilla chip thing and 3 different dips/sauces: a lovely green mint chutney, some kind of red onion dip, and a bright fuchsiar/purple dip (Sorry, no idea what they are!). They were each delicious, and like I said, just gorgeous! These guys are obsessed with color! The tikka masala is raging red, so pretty and tasty!

  • Hope D.

It is borderline treasonous how delicious this place is! Wise tip: if you're not Indian, do not let them convince you that you should get the "medium" spiciness. They conned me into this (probably because of my skin color) and my meal simply wasn't spicy enough. When I return, I'm going straight for the hot! I want to go back right now.

  • Chris T.

Easily our favorite Indian restaurant in town. I always judge ethic restaurants by the makeup of the patrons. I'm happy to say that I'm often one of the only white guys there.

  • Kati H.

We just got take-out here and I couldn't get on Yelp fast enough to review! I had the butter chicken (chicken makhni) and my fiancé had the lamb vindaloo. We also got an order of naan. Ohhhhh man. So AMAZING. Portions were huge and everything was hot and perfectly spiced. Best indian food I have ever eaten. Go here ASAP! PS the staff were super polite while we were waiting and offered us a place to sit and water. Most places just take your to go order and ignore you for 20 minutes while you stand next to the doorway!

As good as it gets indeed. 5 stars for overall dining experience. 3 Brits and an Hon. Brit out on the prowl for curry as is expected of a Saturday night. Large room, probably seats 100, buffet set up down the middle for lunch. Batata Dal Puri - potatoes, noodles, onion, yoghurt and sweet sauce (8) - delish Tandoori Paneer - 4 large pieces - delish Chilli Fish - sweet and spicy - more indo chinese - 8 pieces delish Muligatawny Soup - one of the best in a long long time - we used it as a dipping sauce Shrimp Tandoori - delish - dipped them in the Muligatawny - yum Lamb Vindaloo - delish - oh yes hot but not too hot, more Madras than Vindy Lamb Achari - delish but a tad salty for my taste. Methi Malai Mutter - for the love of god, this was heavenly, for those not in the know, its chopped fenugreek leaves, peas and cream. Huge amount of food and we polished most of it off with the remainder for brekkie today. The menu in the Taj is extensive and creative, offering much more than the other places in Nashville. There are extensive veggie dishes and Dosas in additional to all the usual suspects and a good selection of puri's.The Patel's who have the supermarket up the road own the place and are showcasing their ingredients off nicely. The service is almost invisible, quiet and polite without any pushiness. What I really liked was how the place went from almost empty to full when we left and the noise level never got any louder. $90 for all the above bounty plus 1 Flying horse and a Ras Malai for the table -really good value for the portion sizes. Have tried lots of Indian Places throughout the USA and this is one of the best.

Whether you want to try a range of delicious dishes and stuff yourself to the gills at lunch, or have a look at the expansive menu and choose your own adventure for dinner, Taj is an awesome restaurant choice! We've introduced many a friend and family member to the joys of delicious Indian flavor through the lunchtime buffet, which offers a rotating variety of dishes each day. At night, they switch to a menu brimming with choices for meat eaters (chicken and lamb abound) and vegetarians alike. The owners have renovated and the interior ambiance is welcoming and much more swanky than you'd expect for an old shopping center on Nolensville Road. Some of our favorites: creamy yogurt sauced Navratan Korma, Daal Makhani, spicy Chicken Vindaloo, and Garlic Naan. Although, truthfully, in over a dozen visits, we've never had a terrible dish, so you can't really go wrong!

This place is my new go-to Indian restaurant. My wife and I tried it on a whim, because we were craving Indian food but hadn't found a great place yet. Taj is great. They have a large menu like most Indian Food places, and they offer a lunch buffet seven days a week from 11am-3pm. We went for dinner and I ordered the vegetable korma and she ordered the aloo gobi. Mine was spot on! The korma was so rich and creamy with just enough spice to make my nose run. Hands down the best korma I've had. The aloo gobi was good too. It had great flavor and wasn't too spicy either. Each meal comes with rice, but you have to pay extra for naan- though it's only like $1.50. We'll definitely be back!

This is my favorite Indian place in Nashville, (with woodlands coming in a close second). The lunch buffet is well worth the price, though the take out is also quick and consistent. The staff are also really nice. Once I mispronounced the dish I ordered and they gave me the dish I had actually ordered by mistake and made the one I wanted for free. It's well worth the trip down Nolensville Pike.

I just moved to Nashville. I was in Chicago for a few years and Denver for a decade before that. I've traveled to India as well so I've been around some places with good indian food.. I've been searching for a good indian restaurant in Nashville and I finally found one. Not only is this Buffet good, it's the best I've ever had. For starters the food has great flavor. They actually add spice instead of making it Bland so everyone can eat it. The buffet is large and has a lot of different items. They mix the buffet up so it's different every day. The Service is excellent and they are very attentive. I've been to all the other Indian places in Nashville and this Reigns Supreme!

This is the worst Taj I have ever seen and I have ever been. The location is ugly a big turn down, the food seems to be below OK, the Biryani which is suppose to be an authentic dish of Taj is a biggest turn down. The non-veg items are fine but not up to the standards. Advise - 1. Please change the location 2. Chop the vegetables small in whatever Biryani or Curries. 3. Please try to be a Taj. This review is written with so much disappointment about not being a Taj.

Heaven. Absolute heaven. This is the aloo palak I've been searching for years. Everyone else comes up short. The naan is amazing (yes! naan can actually be amazing!). Nice atmosphere, attentive staff, comprehensive menu (though many Southern Indian dishes had been struck). Do yourself a favor and order the Navratan Korma: pure ecstasy. Immediately became my favorite restaurant.

We eat here quite often and have never had a bad experience. The food and service are always wonderful. After being to most of the other Indian restaurants in Nashville, I'd say this one is by far the best. The sauces are tasty, the ingredients are fresh and everything is perfectly seasoned. We just love this place.

Had lunch here with some co-workers, it was a pretty good Indian buffet. The various curries were flavorful, with vegetarian and meat options. Really liked the simple dessert, a fruit cocktail soaked in a nice thick mango sauce. Couple small complaints -- the rice was a little over-done, we were there towards the tail end of lunch so perhaps the rice had been sitting on the buffet too long. Also the buffet wasn't that big -- there were maybe at most about a dozen entrees and another dozen or so side dishes. Still what I tried was all good, I left nothing on the plate. So I can't really complain.

Amazing Indian food! One of the best Indian restaurants I have ever been to. Beautiful interior, very classy and great for a date or family. It is located in a hidden away shopping center next to Dollar Tree so you have no idea what you are in for when you arrive. Meal starts with complimentary chutneys which are fresh and tasty. I am from Los Angeles and love ethnic foods but I wasn't sure what I would find in Nashville. What a pleasant surprise!

I finally went back for the buffet two days in a row - on Christmas Eve and again on Christmas Day. The buffet items rotate daily, which I like. The menu today was very different from yesterday. I left a little miserable both days from eating so much. Today, I set up a Christmas Day lunch with 13 other friends. I was amazed that they had our table fully set up and ready to go including water for everyone. The place was packed with mostly Indians (which is a good sign). We had a couple Indians and a Persian in our group so I'm always eager to hear their thoughts - and everyone LOVED it. I sold about 6 other people on the mango lassi (delicious). The only downside is I wish my office were closer so I could go for lunch. Luckily they offer the buffet at lunch everyday except Monday (closed).

Do you love spicy, flavorful food? Get thee to Taj! Note that 'spicy' does not mean 'painful'. Beyond the machismo value of proving your ability to endure pain, I've never understood Nashville's fondness for Hot Chicken. I mean, if you want to set your mouth on fire, why not just skip the bird, bite down on a ghost pepper and then go jump in Old Hickory Lake to cool down? I jest. (Slightly.) So yeah, there's some heat on the Taj buffet. But it is *balanced* heat. It has texture, subtlety and nuance. You take a bite and get layers of flavors. Instead of a one-note blast, your taste buds enjoy a harmonious symphony. Too poetic? OK, how about this: Taj has delicious, authentic Indian food at a great price -- particularly on the lunchtime buffet that lets you sample around ~20 dishes for ~$10. Match that with a comfortable clean dining room and friendly, professional service, and you've got a real winner. This is exactly the type of restaurant that Nashville needed. We're lucky to have it. PS - Per the almighty Internet, "Taj" is "a crown by an Indian prince of high rank". It's an appropriate name, because you can truly feast like royalty at the Taj buffet!

The place was packed today for lunch with mostly Indians. That always tells you that the food must be authentic. I walked around the buffet, but didn't really see anything I wanted. Everything was in gravies, very little meat. I ordered off the menu and got lamb vindaloo. It came quickly and was served with naan bread and a large platter of long grain white rice. There was plenty of lamb chunks in the order. The rest of my party ordered off the buffet and seemed pleased with all the food. I was very pleased with my lamb dish. I did find myself emptying my water glass and them refilling it. Sodium was rather ample in my dish. I will return another day. There are other dishes on the menu that I would like to try.

If you love Indian food, this is your spot. Taj has a great buffet for lunch and an expansive dinner menu. They have excellent food and are so helpful and accommodating! From the menu, however, we've been impressed by Taj's selection of dishes we either haven't seen elsewhere (such as compulsively eatable Indo-Chinese hakka noodles that are the color and heat of Flamin' Hot Cheetos) or haven't seen done as well (a vegetable navratan korma swimming in coconut-curry sauce richer than custard). I've seen other restaurants fail at this location and the owner had guts opening here after the Kroger next door closed. I'm confident that Taj will please my taste buds for years to come.

OK.... I've now been here twice, so I feel I can write a honest review. The wait staff is very attentive, and friendly. The place is very clean, and ambience is pretty nice. The real reason you come back is the food, and oh my goodness, it is good. My favorite is the Chicken Tikka Masala, and Garlic Naan. The serving sizes are big enough for me and my wife to split an entree. I can't recommend this place enough. 10 thumbs up.

Update: Finally made it to the buffet. It was awesome. Well worth the $9.99. Everything you love about Indian food. Fresh naan brought out to each table. Service was great and the place is super clean. This is the best Indian restaurant in Nashville. I've tried them all. Go here and enjoy this great food. So glad I found this place. First time went there had the chicken tikka malsala. It was awesome. Garlic naan was awesome. This place just has it. Better than all the other Indian restaurant in Nashville. The menu is large, plenty to choose from. Even for you veggies. Don't be afraid to eat here. It's a must for Indian food lovers.

Just had food here. Didn't expect to get so good food in Nashville. One of the amazing food I had recently. Everything was so fresh warm and tasty. Loved the environment and food. Would definitely love to come back whenever I come back to Nashville ...!!!

We often order out from Taj (because we have a 2 year old). It is the best Indian food I've had since moving to Nashville and dare I say, better than my grandmothers curry. We LOVE their food and will continue to eat here. I've never had a bad experience with Taj and appreciate their consistency. Even my two year old loves their samosas and korma.

probably the best i've had since i moved to Nashville. great flavors and spice. had to go back within a week to get more.

A friend and I stumbled across this one day for lunch after visiting the Dollar Store. Walked in just as they were closing the buffet, so we ordered from the menu. There is a huge menu with so much to choose from. We went back another time for dinner and have returned several more times. The Naan is fabulous, and the mango juice is as fresh as can be! We love Taj!

Taj is really good! I've only had their buffet on Sundays so far and I'm impressed. The Chat has been varied each visit and has been great each time. Naan is way better than most other places around town. Actually is served with a little crustiness. Get over there and check it out!

Fantastic! New Favorite Indian in Mid TN! We ate dinner there & it was delicious! They give you a nice big stack of crispy papadums & 3 chutneys (coriander, date, & onion) to start. I had hot Palak Paneer (spinach & cheese cubes) and Husband had a Tandoori Mixed Grill with several meats brought out sizzling & well spiced. I ALWAYS get Palak Paneer to judge if I like an Indian restaurant & this was some of the best I have ever had. I have eaten in Indian restaurants from Cali to D.C. Husband said his Mixed Grill was better than Sitar which has been our favorite for years. Very moist & large portion. We had a bread basket with 4 different fresh breads & each one was superb. I'm adding in the takeout menu which shows their large selection & prices...their in house menu describes each dish in detail. They also have a larger than average buffet set up for lunch. I was pleasantly surprised there are female waitresses on staff. The service was fast & friendly. They also do not close from 2-5:00 like other places.

Well 2 stars for good service. I would give 1 star for food. Not really impressed with the food here. I am vegetarian. All these good reviews seems to be related to non veg food. I am highly disappointed with their vegetarian food.

This the only place in Nashville that understands when I say 8 on a scale from 1-10 I mean spicy. Oh boy is there a wide variety of selection to choose from off their menu. I have yet to be disappointed. Reasonable prices and friendly service. Taj is quickly becoming a place I crave weekly!

I love Taj! This is the best Indian food I've had in a very long time. With most Indian restaurants, all the dishes taste like the have the exact same spice mix, but here each one is unique, and you can see the hunks of cinnamon and cardamom pods. Mmm! If you're looking for something decadent, try the chicken cashmere. I can't even begin to describe how delicious it is. Try bhindi masala (okra curry) for a new way to do okra, and murgh makhani (butter chicken) instead of its imitation cousin chicken tikka masala.

Best indian fd in nashville, esp after staying in dallas and being exposed to true indian flavors, csn vouch this matches if not beats the taste. We tried their wknd lunch buffet. The only gripe was addition of fd color to more recipes than needed.

Great Indian food with an improving atmosphere. I have had several dishes and the buffet here, and everything I have tried has been delicious. Service is good but not great, prices are very reasonable.

This is not the best Indian food in Nashville but it's close enough for a great time. The dining area here is incredible and beautiful. The prices are only slightly high and you will enjoy many dishes. There were way too many items on the menu here though and its guaranteed to confuse you. I also am not sure if some of the wait staff here even speaks much English because we exchanged very few words which can make your selection even more complicated. I'm not a milk drinker though so that isn't enough to ruin the experience. Try Goat Curry don't be a wuss about it. You will enjoy yourself and even bring family because of the beautiful setting.

This is the best Indian food in Nashville. I've been a loyal lunch buffet patron for since I discovered them in September. I've never had anything that wasn't superb. They always have several vegetarian options, some approachable options for the newbies, and something fried and tasty. Please tell everyone about this delicious place! ---------------------- Below is my original review from 3 months ago that was listed on the wrong address: I work in the 100 oaks area and have been wishing that there was a good source of Indian food in the area - this place is a dream come true! The first time I went, I had been headed to Subway and noticed a yard sign for Taj. I think my heart skipped a beat. I hightailed it up Nolensville Rd and ordered something with goat - I forget which dish. It rocked. The highlight for me, though was the samosas with this INSANE spicy raspberry/cherry dipping sauce. Generous portions too - which for a small person with a small appetite justifies the cost (3 days of lunch, yay!). The next time, I went with my husband and we did the lunch buffet. For a little restaurant, they had a great variety of things to try (and believe me I had some of LITERALLY everything). This place is fast, delicious and worth the price. PLEASE VISIT! I am terrified that their location will keep people from finding out about them and I'm not sure I can face lunches without them.

We went back for the lunch buffet and it was everything you could wish for. Chicken, lamb, goat and vegetarian dishes were steaming hot and delicious. Worth the drive from west Nashville, it's our new go-to Indian! Don't miss it!

Excellent. Tucked away in Nolenopia (1 mile up from Harding and Nolensville) this southern India cousine is the Taj. Try the lunch buffet to find your food karma.

This place is awesome. I love Indian food, and this is some of the best I've ever had. I was too late for the buffet, which several coworkers raved about, but my off-the-menu chicken vindaloo was awesome, and I had plenty left to take home. It was very fresh with just the right amount of spices. The naan bread was so fresh and hot, right out of the oven, and the rice pudding was delicious. The place is super clean, the service was good, and it was a great experience overall. I can't wait to go back!

We have gone here several times.. The food is good and to our liking- wish we could say the same about the service. I ordered Chai which is meant to be hot .. When I said it was cold, the waitress had the audacity to blame me for it being that way. (My husband ordered it while I was in the restroom) A simple hot replacement was all I expected. Don't expect much from the Rude waitress here.

Seemed good I guess. I had a mixed tikki grilled plate that had misc chicken, shrimp, lamb and I think was supposed to have some other things but they may have been missing, The mango lassi was excellent, service OK. Not very busy for a Friday night,.

I've seen this storefront go from being a Mexican restaurant, to some kinky little hooka place with nothing really sticking due to its out-of-the-way location. I've been hoping for a decent Indian place in this part of Nashville and boy, these folks have it right! My mouth was watering from the time I stepped out of my car all the way to the front door from the smells coming out of here! Tonight I got the lamb vindaloo and the wife got chicken tandoori. Both were excellent. Can't wait to try the buffet at some point. I got introduced to good Indian food in the UK and this place is pretty dead-on. They'll be seeing us again!!

Hungry for Indian food yesterday and this one came up on Yelp. There are two entries, but the one on Elysian Fields road is a wrong address - I think it's supposed to be this one and somehow the address was wrong. The restaurant was a little "hidden" in a shopping strip that wasn't so obvious from the road, but once found, I am pleased that we took the trouble. We went for lunch and the buffet was plentiful. I tried pretty much everything. Sorry I don't know the names of all the dishes, and I had a bit of every one of them. A couple of the dishes were quite spicy. The Chicken in the yellow (curry?) sauce was probably my favorite. There was a "green" dish that appeared to have tofu in it that was good, with a bit of smokiness to it. There was another dish with lentils which was good and slightly spicy. The "chips" were amazingly thin, light and crunchy. There was some sort of bread that tasted a little bit like cornbread but not sweet. They serve Naan bread to your table. There were two sweet items on the buffet - one was several fruits in a sauce, the other was something I can only describe as tasting like un-frosted donut holes soaked in a light syrup. The latter was good, but you wouldn't want to eat much of it because it is so sweet. The service was lacking - I had to ask for them to bring our drinks, and they didn't check if we needed refills until we were nearly ready to leave, but they were busy running around cleaning tables and resetting them quickly as customers left. I saw them bring the check to one table, but by the time we left, the lunch crowd had come in and when I asked for the check they indicated we should just go to the register. The food was good and I'd go back again if I was in the area.

Happy Hindi speaking children with their parents at the lively lunchtime buffet contrasted with the drab outside. The parking area was forlorn in the recently-vacated Kroger lot. Inside Taj Indian Restaurant the mostly Indian diners with a few nativeborn Americans enjoyed the tastes and smells of Indian cuisine. The Taj tandoor oven bakes veggies, chicken, fish and more and sears in the flavor. I liked the Tandori Fish Tikka marinated chunks of mahi-mahi. It could have had a bit more moisture, but was fine nonetheless. The raita cucumber side dish was yummy wih mint leaves and yogurt made in-house. The vegetarian Dahi Batata Puri appetizer was filled with potato, noodles, onion, yogurt and sweet sauce. A fine finish was Kulfi Indian ice cream dessert. The Nepalese and Indian servers, and the violet napkins and walls, with the black tablecloths made for a fine ambience, especially for the neighborhood environ.

Normally, I don't write reviews for any place that I go to I just tell my friends and family about it but my experience here was definitely worth mentioning. I am actually from the Memphis area where we have a handful have Indian restaurants which I thought were OK but nothing compared to this place. I went for a late dinner as I was headed back home. My go to dish at any Indian restaurant is always Chicken Korma and Taj's Chicken Korma was amazing! Being an Indian and trying this dish at many places including India this dish can not be beat here. Everything taste so authentic! I also tried the Paneer Tikka and Lamb Kabab as an appetizer, the color and taste was amazing. I didn't realize I was going to get so much food and ended up having to take most of it home which my family was happy about so it worked out! I'll make it a point to stop here any time I am in the Nashville area no matter what. Thank you guys so much for the delicious food and great service! Can't wait to go back!

Taj is a wonderful new restaurant in the Elysian Fields Shopping Center (where the Kroger closed). The food is terrific: crisp papadum, fluffy naan, succulent tandoori chicken, tasty biryani, great vegetable jal frezi, fragrant channa dal and splendid dosas (as good as those served at Woodland's). There is a reasonably priced buffet every day from 11 until 3. It costs a little more on Saturdays and Sundays but it is definitely worth it. Friendly, efficient servers top off the experience.

Went on a Saturday afternoon for the lunch buffet. We were somewhat confused by urbanspoon suggesting that this restaurant had closed, but it is in fact open. The food was fantastic, although I should mention it was a bit spicier than the average Indian restaurant I've been to. Will definitely be going back.

This was our second visit to the Taj buffet, our first since becoming vegetarian. We returned mostly because we remembered the many vegetarian options. My personal favorite is the Paneer Makhani and the Vegetable Makhani and the different veggie dishes, but there are also many choices of lamb, beef and chicken. We plan on going for a regular dinner and ordering off of the menu. The nan bread is very fresh and brought to your table so it's not getting stale on the buffet table. They also bring papadum and a curried potato wrap. Everything is fresh and very we'll prepared and the spice level is perfect but some dishes may be a bit spicy for those who like very bland mild food.

I've tried just about every Indian restaurant in the Nashville area, and Taj is hands-down my favorite. They're Chicken Tikka Masala is heavenly...so good its hard to convince myself to try other things on the menu! Their buffet is an excellent option. You get to really immerse yourself and actually try different things...like pani puri, bhel puri, and so much more! I just wish i had a bigger stomach so I could try EVERYTHING each time. Have a sweet tooth? Get the Gulab Jamun. It is sweet syrupy goodness!!!

Came home from a long time away from good indian. Planned to come here but took 7 months to drive to Taj. Friends who have really good taste for Indian love this place and I kept aching to make the trip. But still too busy. Finally made it there and of course kicked myself for not going sooner. We had buffet and ordered off menu. Vindaloo was amazing and was not on buffet. Bread wonderful not dry and plentiful. Tiki Marsala best I have had and the butter chicken was worth the longgggg years away from good Indian. I would be once a week if I could be closer.

Decent decor but the food that I ordered was nothing to write home about. Ordered Bhel Puri and Pav Bhaji. The Bhel Puri was ok but the Pav bhaji was not good at all. The Pav bhaji had an overload of garlic and garam masala. I didn't try the other dishes and so it is difficult for me to go by just these two dishes - hence the 3 stars versus lower. Maybe their run of the mill North Indian dishes are better.

I sincerely hope that no one I know saw me eating the disgusting amount of food that I indulged in over the weekend at the Taj buffet. It was pure gluttony my friends. Good thing it was flipping incredible! Their buffet was well stocked with all of my favorites. Chicken tikka masala, papadon, some kind of heavenly potato dish, all the chutney, raieta, and mint jelly that I could hope for....even my favorite dessert item, but sadly I had gone back for unneeded seconds and could barely move. This place rocks!! My only gripe is that the naan is not on the buffet and came to my table after I was well into plate #1. I wish I had it a bit sooner! Do yourself a solid and check out Taj for the buffet! I'm going to update my review when I return for dinner!

Visited Taj for the lunch buffet. It's a bit unassuming when you arrive at the shopping center but the interior is well decorated. Definitely an elevated dining experience. The buffet had a good selection. My favorite was the lamb; very buttery and flavorful. The rest of the items I tried were above average as well. A few things I'd note are the salad was overly drenched with ranch, it's be nice if the ranch was on the side. Secondly, the restrooms could use a bit of work. Overall, would return in the future.

I've had a couple great Indian restaurants in my time on this earth. I have to say that Taj hits the mark for the best I've eaten so far in Tennessee. I have found that if you show up when a restaurant opens, and they have 10 tables within 15 minutes, it's usually a sign that the food is good. I have my go-to dish of the Chick Tikka Masala and Garlic Naan and am in heaven. I literally have a physical altercation with myself to keep myself from eating here every day of the week for the simple fact that the food is so tasty! be warned if you like really spicy food- they ask you how hot you want it. If you say hot, it'll be hot, even for the person who eats Carolina Creepers for breakfast with a glass of habanero milk. So order it medium, i've found that is a great compromise of heat without overpowering the spices and flavors they create. I really enjoy the option to get the food to-go when I don't feel like putting on regular clothes and being a real human, so try that if you are like me.

Words cannot express how much I crave all of the flavors and spices at Taj. Each meal I fall more in love with their food/staff/restaurant. The fluffy naan, chicken tikka masala, mhhmmm! My hubs is new to Indian cuisine and the staff always lead him down a different road of delish every time. The heat of their "hot" pretty mild but you can always ask they're honest about the level.

The acid test for the Indianness of an Indian restaurant is how well they make their naans. And I am happy to report that Taj makes their naans so fluffy, they might as well open a mattress store as a side business. Seriously, when the bread shows up on the table, there will be naan violence! For the meat eaters, there are tons of options just as there are for vegetarians. I am a big fan of their vegetable samosas. They are the perfect bite-sized masala buns of tongue orgasms as they are meant be. I was severely disappointed and depressed at their pani puris. After a session with a shrink, I allowed myself to forgive them for over salting the potatoes, and butchering the pani (the spiced water) that goes into the little hollow fried dough balls. If you want to see how they should be done, head down to Chauhan's, stop on the way at the bank, take out a loan, and then order their Gol Guppas. That's the benchmark in this city. Both Woodlands and Taj ruin pani puris by half-assing it. Their main course fare is pretty darn good, and if you are adventurous and feel like slapping on a few pounds here and there, go for the methi matar malai, an innocuous looking bowl of fenugreek and peas swimming in creamy gravy. But with every mouthful, you'll feel gravity grow stronger as the delicious flavors collide and explode in your mouth. Between eating the fluffy clouds of naan pieces and this ambrosia, you'll have to loosen your belt/skirt, and just ooze onto the chair. Table service leaves a lot to be desired for. You'll have to flag them down explicitly to catch your attention, but it's a small price to pay in exchange for the quality of food. Seriously, this is the hidden gem of Indian restaurants in the city. And don't order the pani puri.

I've now been for the lunch buffet ($9.95) as well as for dinner, and I'm fairly confident that it's the best Indian place in Nashville and the surrounding areas. The lunch buffet was quite good, and I'm no fan of buffets for two reasons. 1) Restaurants never make anything spicy so everyone can eat it, and 2) The food loses flavor and dries out. No need to worry about that here, everything is good and some of it is bring your face to a sweat spicy. ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLACES IN NASHVILLE.

    (5)
  • Amanda E.

Just moved from London England and this place was semi-close so we figured we would give it a try based off of the good reviews. Unfortunately it was a massive let down for us. The tikka masala was watery and tasted like it was from a jar. The saag paneer was so salty you could barely eat it. Ordered some chana masala, rogan josh lamb, and naan bread. Those were all good (well the rogan josh was average.) We wont be ordering here again and had much higher expectations. I would give a skip if you know what a good Indian restaurant is like.

Great find in south Nashville. I stuck with the usual fare: chicken tikka masala, vegetable samosas, and garlic naan. The naan was superb. So ought and delicious. The tikka masala was supposed to be spicy as I ordered it to be hot but it was more like a medium to me. Definitely not enough kick for my tastes. The samosas were my least favorite. Way too salty for me.

Taj is my new favorite Indian restaurant in Nashville!! Previously, Sitar was my jam until a night of food poisoning ended that love affair. We have visited Woodlands and Bombay Palace without returning to either. My husband and I visited Taj last night for the first time and were very impressed. Not only is it conveniently 2 miles from our house but it is the best and cheapest Indian restaurant we have gone to. The condiment/chutney trio they bring out as an appetizer is delicious. I used the chutneys with the rest of my meal. We both ordered a mango lassi and we split the Mixed Appetizer for Two which consisted of veggie samosas and a variety of pakoras. Before we were finished with our appetizers, our entrees arrived - very quick and diligent service! My husband had the Paneer Masala and I had the Kashmiri Dum Aloo: potatoes stuffed with cheese simmered in a creamy tomato sauce. Ahh so divine! Of course we had some garlic naan along with our meal. We had plenty of leftovers (for breakfast the next day!) and I can't wait to return! Oh wait, this whole meal was $40.09?!

  • Megha M.

Not sure if we caught them on their bad day - but it was definitely not what I was expecting from a restaurant that has 4.5 stars on yelp. we didn't order anything fancy - just 2 entrees, which took them over 45 minutes to bring out. The restaurant was not busy or bustling , so I am not sure what took so long. The 2 entrees were frankly meh - we didn't even bring home leftovers because we were just not impressed. Not going back.

Absolutely love this place. Their Lamb nargisi is so savory and sweet and just plain awesome. My boyfriend and I love to order take out from Here and eat in. The food is always perfect and the service is friendly. If you go as a male-female couple... expect the man to pay. They always hand the check to the man and look at you funny if the woman pays. We think it's a cultural custom for Indians and Pakistanis.

We stopped by here to get some take-out for a "The Hundred-Foot Journey" movie night and really enjoyed the fare. In my 10 minutes waiting for the food, everything coming out of the kitchen smelled amazing and there were smiley faces all around the restaurant as people sat down to curry goodness. We got Chicken Saagwala, Samosa Chaat, and Naan. The Chicken Saag was pretty good but not great. I've had better flavors from Tamarind and a couple other spots around town but this one was certainly serviceable. The Samosa Chaat, however, was great! I really enjoyed the temperature, texture, and taste of the warm potato/lentil mixture spiced to perfection. Pros: Decent value. Samosa Chaat was super tasty! Cons: Wait was longer than they said on the phone and the Chicken Saag could have been a bit better (still good, though). Overall: This is a fantastic Indian option in an area of Nashville devoid of Indian options. It's also one of the better ones in town that have meat options. My favorite is still Woodlands but I'll be back to Taj before too long.

Every bite was delicious!! My husband is a huge indian food fan (it's his favorite) and we've been here a couple times since we recently moved to the neighborhood. We've gone to the lunch buffet a month or so ago and went yesterday for dinner. Both did not disappoint! We were really blown away by our perfected dinner yesterday! We got samoosas for an appetizer then I got Chicken Tikka Masala and he got Chicken Korma for our entrees. We also ordered garlic naan to go with the meal and it was HUGE - pizza size of naan!! We both thoroughly enjoyed these rich, flavorful dishes. Everything was made to perfection and my husband gave his stamp of approval (I'd say he's an expert given all the years of eating it locally!!). Although an entree isn't cheap, it'll last you two meals! Neither of us could finish our entree.... BONUS is 2 meals for the price of one! :)

Really good Indian food tucked into a shopping center beside a dollar tree in South Nashville. Friendly staff. I got food to go and drove 45 mins home to Murfreesboro and it was still fairly hot. I ordered the palak paneer mild for myself and the vegetable jal frozi medium for my husband. We shared the papadum & chutneys, paneer pakora, and vegetable samosas. In my opinion, the food was spicy. It had a lot of flavor but maybe too much spice for someone who doesn't like their food very hot. We didn't mind but I was definitely wiping my nose! The chutneys were some of the best I've ever had. We both agreed that while our entrees were good, they weren't our favorite. We will definitely go back and try something else because so far this is the best Indian food I've had in middle Tn.

If you have ever wanted to try Indian food, this is your spot. Taj has a great buffet for lunch and an expansive dinner menu. The first night that I stumbled upon this jewel in Woodbine, Rinku was my server. I opted to ask her what she would have rather than trying to decide for myself. She suggested the goat and I was NOT disappointed! I promised her I would return with friends and I did... the very next day. My co-workers and I eat lunch here almost every week. As I write this, I'm here by myself on a Saturday. I'm not the only single diner here either. Yeah...good enough that you'll dine alone. I'll share my only complaint because no place is perfect. On a couple of occasions, a dish on the buffet has been too salty for MY taste but that's my personal opinion. I've seen other restaurants fail at this location and the owner had guts opening here after the Kroger next door closed. I'm confident that Taj will please my taste buds for years to come.

Having tried the buffet several weeks ago (see my original review below), I stopped in for dinner around 5:30 on a Friday evening. While dining alone on a Friday may sound like a one-way ticket to Loserville (a lovely young lady I'd invited purely as friends never responded, and dammit, that wasn't going to deter me from trying this place), the superb flavors made up for it all. The beer selection is solid, and I went for the large Taj Mahal to get me started while nibbling on the delicious papadums and chutneys. I ordered my "usual" staples at any Indian restaurant: chicken tikka masala and lamb vindaloo. I asked for the vindaloo to be extra spicy--a request that's usually met at most Indian restaurants with contempt because I had the misfortune of being born white. The good people at Taj happily obliged, and I'm gleeful to say that my sinuses welled up. The flavors in both dishes were excellent, and the tikka masala in particular was creamy and filling. I was impressed by the complexity of flavors in the vindaloo, especially since it's a dish many Indian restaurants seem to botch. One slightly odd note: the tikka masala has no small quantity of thinly sliced chunks of onion in it. I'm accustomed to getting some onion at different places, but this was a bit much for my tastes. That's a minor quibble for a very flavorful dish, however. I'll visit Taj again. Hopefully not solo, but given my experience, I wouldn't be entirely opposed either. At least no one would be sitting across from me to witness my gluttony.

I am nearing obsession with Taj. On Tuesdays I'm the guy at the table for one(don't feel bad for me, it's my quiet time.) Taj has a lunch buffet that is simply fantastic. They typically have 8-9 entrees, rice, Naan, salad and dessert for about $10. Don't like buffet food 'cause it's not fresh? Not to worry. They are busy enough that the food turns quickly. The Paneer Masala is so freaking good! Biriyani is great, often they serve lamb or goat dishes. It is in a former Kroger grocery center but don't think of it as "strip mall food." This is good Indian cuisine. See you Tuesday.

Right outside my back door. The reason I stopped to even begin to eat here was because of the smells emiting from the doors. Seriously as I drove by with my windows down I SMELLED the place and I knew that it had to be delicious. And my nose didn't turn me down! Might be the best food I've had since moving to Nashville. Lunch buffets occur seven days a week. Might be the best food I've had since moving to Nashville. Been there twice so far, once for dinner and another for the buffet. Dinner is delicious but the buffet is just to exciting with all their selections.

Still a five star Indian experience! The people that work here are very kind and friendly. They have lamb and goat dishes that are great! The chicken was not dry. Great stuff!

I can't say enough good things about this place. Try everything. Go back and try it all again. I have never disliked something from their menu, and I love all of the employees.
