I had a lovely time attending a drag show and dancing at Play! It gets very crowded and there are limited seats around the drag show stage, so be sure to get there early if you want a good spot. It's very entertaining and a great time! I'd highly recommend it. Their drinks are strong and tasty, and immediately connected to the drag show is a big dance club. The dance club is fun, lots of lights and a DJ, and I had a good time here with my girlfriends one night. Obviously, this is a gay bar, so don't come if you are uncomfortable being hit on by the same sex (everyone in our group was approached at least once) but they are typically very friendly and nice about it, and I was sure to be flattered rather than annoyed! :) Parking is a bit tricky but it's not hard to find a place along a side street or out front, just watch to make sure you aren't in a tow zone!

The drag show was a lot of fun. The drinks were strong -a little too strong, my memories of the night are vague. It was Sunday so the dance floor was empty but the DJ took my request and I had an excellent time anyway.

I'm a straight girl who loves to go dancing with her girlfriends. Nashville, for all its awesomeness, lacks good places to go dancing. They are usually super trendy and fade quickly into obscurity or become extremely sketchy very quickly. Play is not like that at all. It is the best place in town for dancing. It is also the best place to go with friends for a good time, straight or gay. First of all, everyone, I mean everyone, is friendly and nice. The bartenders, the guys at the door, the DJ...everyone is just wonderful. And the crowd is always fun, good people out for good fun. Even when its packed in here (and that happens on the weekends) everyone is still just enjoying life. And the drag shows...oh I love them. I've been lucky enough to sit but the stage when one of these was happening, and its not to be missed. These queens put their heart and soul into their shows, their outfits, their makeup, their hair...they are stunning and funny and get the crowd wild. And between shows, you head to the dance floor and have a great time until the next show. This becomes your pattern for the evening and unless you are not into dancing, fun, good drinks, laughs, and risque jokes, you will love this place, no matter what your orientation is. My girlfriends and I have made this a monthly event, to go get dinner and then dance and see the drag shows. We look forward to this each month, as we all enjoy the atmosphere and music of Play. This is a great place for a great time, and if you haven't gotten to tip and kiss a drag queen yet, you are really missing out on one of Nashville's best nightclubs (seriously, it may be the only good one in town!). (As a tip, there is a cover at the door, but unless its a special event of some sort it's only $8, even on the weekend. They have an ATM inside but its cheaper to bring your own cash. Also, another tip, they allow underagers in, so just be aware of anyone with a big X on their hand. None of this detracts from how wonderful this place it.)

I've been to Play several times times both before moving to Nashville and since relocating to Nashville and every single time I've had an amazing time! The Drag show is always fun even if I sometimes get jealous of how fabulous their legs are! The DJ's playing are some of the best I've heard - and that's a lot coming from NYC. They always keep the crowd pumped and dancing. The bartenders are some of the best eye candy in the city - even if they bat for the other team lol. The drinks are a bit weak but the good time and prices more than make up for it.

I came here with several friends, as we were in town for our Beachbody Fitness Convention. A few of them went to the Lipstick Lounge just days prior, but immediately turned around because it was small and in the middle of nowhere, so we were a bit unsure of what to expect here at Play. At 10:00, it wasn't packed, but it was busy enough and we caught part of the drag show that was going on. After an hour or so, more of my friends came to join us and we had an unbelievably great time on the dance floor and were impressed by the great music!! The drinks weren't bad either and the staff was friendly. The only downsides were the $12 cover charge (this isn't NYC) and one of my friends slipped on the dance floor as it was slippery as heck, and she ended up breaking her wrist so we cut our night short by getting her to the hospital. I was in flats, and I didn't have any issues, but I know others were commenting even before this happened. They should really make sure to take care of this issue, but otherwise, it was a lot of fun and I would definitely come back again when I'm in town next year.

I loved this place and had so much fun! The girls are great and some of the performances were stunning. But you can't pay with credit/ debit card unless you drink more thank $20 or be charged with $3, which is not that much but I only wanted a beer.

Totally agree with Bridgette's assessment of this place. Before I moved here I visited for my birthday 2 years ago, and I had an amazing time. I don't go to bars very often, but when I do I'd have to say gay bars are way more fun, and this place takes it to another level with the drag shows. The karaoke before the show when I went was amazing. The better you were the more people would line up to give you money. It's a great way to buy a round for your table if you've got a set of pipes. Super nice people here. A guy even bought me a drink and wasn't offended at all when I told him I was straight. Can't wait to go back.

Went to Play on a Friday night a couple of weeks ago. I'd stopped in Tribe earlier that evening (see my review for Tribe) and decided to go to Play, especially since I'd paid $5.00 to play Tribe's "Post Office" and was able to get into Play for free that evening. The trouble started as soon as I hit the front door. Mind you, this is my first time there and I don't know "protocol" (yes, I said "protocol") and attempted to enter from the front entrance with the doorman. After interrupting his conversation, he said matter-of-factly "this is not the entrance, go down one door", and continued his conversation. WOW. Breathe in, breathe out, walk down the one door and walk in. The person behind the counter then checked my ID and said "ten dollars". I said "well, I was told next door that if I played Post Office I could get in for free". He then says, quite rudely, "you need a pass". Pass? What is this, grade school? He then tells me to go back next door and get a free pass or pay the $10. This is NOT the way to treat first-time visitors from out of town! I go back next door, get the pass (damn I feel like I'm in grade school) and return. He takes the pass from me and graciously allows me entry. Wow, I feel special. When I walked in, there was a drag show going on. Just your average drag show with performers trying to get tips from the patrons. One drag queen even came off of the stage and got in everyone's face trying to get tips. That turned me off but I was determined to give Play a chance....and that lasted all of 10 minutes. The drinks are averaged price, which is a good thing. The bartenders are cute, which is a great thing. But the loud obnoxious "hostess" completely killed it for me. I get that you're an "entertainer" and you're trying to make the crowd laugh and get into the show. But talking about your fatness every ten seconds and YELLING "tip the performers, they're working for YOUR coins!" just doesn't work for me. Thanks Play, but I've Played Play and won't be Playing Play anymore.

This is a great gay bar with friendly staff & talented performers. It's always a good time at PLAY. The drag shows are always entertaining, even if I've seen the number before. The bar consists of a large area with the stage, the main bar is also located here. Men & women bathrooms are located towards the back of the building, along with the outdoor smoking area. One great thing about PLAY is that it's smoke free. I have no issue with smokers, I just hate coming home & everything smells like a Turkish Royal. Behind the main bar is the huge dance floor area & a satellite bar that is open when it's busy. The DJ always plays the right music (stuff I can "dance" to) & there's plenty of laser & strobe lights to put someone into an epileptic shock. The drag shows are 11 & 1 on Friday, 9:30, 11 & 1 on Saturday. Sunday has an amateur cast, but they're amazing as well. If you sign up for text alerts, you can get in free some Fridays with proof of the text from 9-10pm. That will save you ten bucks that you can use to buy (1) drink. Cover is free on Sundays unless they have something special going on. My only complaint with PLAY is that the drinks are soooo small. A little plastic cup will cost you a few dollars more than the large, regular sized glasses they serve you next door at TRIBE. My suggestion is to have a few drinks at TRIBE, then head over to PLAY. Remember to bring dollars for the on stage entertainment.

Love this place. Great service, fun drag shows, awesome DJs. However, gay bar or straight bar alike, there will always be at least one creeper that wants to follow you around the whole time. Ugh..

Good drinks, fun place. Jaidynn Diore Fierce and Nichole Ellington Dupree worked it and were delightful whenever they were on stage. We had a fantastic time. I would definitely go back next time I'm in Nashville.

I came here with friends this past weekend. It was quite empty when we first arrived, but got pretty crowded when the drag show started. I wish I could remember the names of all the performers, but I loved it! Although, I do wish there was a better way to arrange the seats near the stage so they wouldn't have people bumping into them to hand off their money. Music was good. The crowd was very diverse. All in all, we had fun playing at Play!

Worst bar experience I ever had. The bartenders tried to charge my friend and I for over $100 when we drank less than $50 worth in drinks. When we disputed this, the manager took away our last 4 drinks, which we had not touched yet, and said he would not charge us for these drinks. He then proceeded to kick us out of the bar. This was completely unacceptable, and we will never be back there ever again. Not to mention how we had to pay an outrageous $10 cover per person at the door. Never again.

Gotta say this place was actually pretty fun! I would definitely go back. If you like to dance this place is awesome. Be prepared to pay a cover, but if you plan to spend more than an hour there it is well worth it.

Play's Friday night drag show is super fun! What makes it even more fun is when it's the Nashville Grizzlies fun(d)raiser! The team is awesome, so cute! We, thankfully, got the pleasure of both their own drag show and the usual Friday night drag show. The club is actually very interesting too. Besides Mai, and maybe a few others, it's the only other real "club" in Nashville. Music video's displayed on the wall, fog machines, lasers like in J-Lo's "Waiting for Tonite" video. Good stuff! My only complaint is that it's 18 and up, but that also seems to be where they make a lot of their money on the cover. We were seriously in the minority, in the dance club portion, that is. The crowd in the drag show room seemed to be older. I'd definitely go back if I want to dance.

Play is definitely the most fun dance bar and gay bar in town (this in the opinion of a straight female, but whatever). Like others mentioned, Wednesday is a great night to go if you're a student or an alum like me who held onto her ID for such free entry opportunities. Sundays are also free if you work in the service industry and bring a pay stub. Play is always packed and there's usually a drag show or some other fun event going on in the front room. The back is an amazing dance floor. It features two bars of its own so you don't have to miss any of the party to grab a refill. On the subject of the bars, by the way, there's a $20 minimum on cards so bring cash or prepared to do enough drinking to meet it. The dance floor is always hot and often filled with people doing choreographed dances (Why? Who cares!). I must admit I never fully got the appeal of smoke machines and disco ball lights on the dance floor until one night at play where I had that extra whiskey sour and danced with an over-twirler - goodness. Oh, Play. We have shared so many crazy nights. I look forward to dancing in you again.

I love the addition of Aurora in the drag show. The dancing is the best in town, but after clubbing in New York City I must suggest that Play stop being so tied to playing music videos on the dance floor. It's all about the music, not about the images of Kesha or some other dance diva on the wall. The revamp of the drag area really revived the whole bar for me. Moving in the right direction.

Regardless of your scene, this is the nicest dance club Nashville has to offer. The latest renovations to the show bar area are gorgeous, the staff is great and the venue is clean and safe. The dancefloor is enhanced with multiple projection screens to immerse you in an all-night music video experience, and the drag show is one of the best you'll see in the South. I realize I've had nothing but positive things to say here but check out Play for yourself. You might evstart comparing similar establishments in larger markets to it. ;)

So much fun! I may have had one of the best times I have ever had at this venue! (Play/Tribe) ... DJ is great .. dance floor is hoppin .. people are pretty and the drag shows are the best thing ever! Bartenders are all nice and it's in a great location (NOT DOWNTOWN). Only gripe is cover is a little steep ... I'm a girl .. this is a gay club .. so an $8 cover for OVER 21 on a FRIDAY ?! Fridays aren't "going out" nights in Nashville .. I think it should be $5. But I LOVE this place!

I have come full circle (this is my 360th review). Considering my last review was for a church, it makes me happy to review a place that many "religious" people might find disgusting and a bunch of other hate filled words. Okay, let's Play (get it..?) Alright, I have probably only been to about half a dozen legit gay bars, and this place was one of the better ones if not the best. I guess I'll disclose that I'm straight, but does that really matter? It might since I might not be able to fully review a place catered towards a specific people group, but I had a great time and would venture a guess that if I was gay or bi or whatever, that Play would be a great place to party. From the time our group entered, the people were cool, even the guy taking our cover. Good sign. The coat check lady was funny and nice. The scantily bartender concocted some very tasty cocktails and was friendly as well. The drag show actually dragged a bit but overall it was fairly entertaining and full of some talented people. The costumes and routines were, as expected, fabulous and creative. One performer actually did a flip into the splits, in heels! I had no idea there was a separate dance floor area until I walked by it en route to the bathroom. The dance floor was packed with sweaty cavorting people and it was easy to get swept up in the energy and music. I definitely danced and had a good time. The lasers and smoke effects were great. The bathrooms were fairly entertaining and often full of various groups (guys, girls whatever) of people. I was never harassed or felt uncomfortable but could see someone (a straight person) not used to this, as a little off-putting. But hello, you're at a gay bar. Have fun (play!), dance, people watch, drink, or just chill. Be safe and take a cab home, there were plenty waiting outside as we exited. There was also a cop across the street waiting to spot a potential drunk driver. ha ha.

Reading this review please understand that I am a club operator of four gay bars in Houston, Texas. I really didn't know what to expect from a gay bar in a 'red neck' state, but I know I didn't expect to find a quality club like Play! The club is divided into two large rooms. One is a drag room and through the drag room there is another room where the dancing happens. The nightclub is really impressive. Much more than I expected when I came to visit Nashville. Great music. Very impressive drag. Would return if ever back in Nashville.

LOVED this place! My girlfriend and I were looking for a good spot to hang on our only night in town. This was definitely a good choice! Great show.. D- ranged kept us laughing all night and Venus Knight rocked the stage hard :) Friendly bartenders Reasonably priced drinks Upscale but comfortable atmosphere Good mix of ladies and guys I wish we had something comparable in Atlanta!

Full disclosure: I'm not the authority in the bar scene here in Nashville. I typically only see these places once every three years when someone is visiting; so, I can only speak from a visitor's point of view while I live here in Nashville. Play is awesome as far as bars go. Decor-wise, when you walk into the bar, your first impression is the recently renovated show bar with a large stage, sleek panels, cafe area and two risered sections. Note: The riser area on the far end is VIP only and costs $50 to enter. You'll get the same view from almost anywhere so you can either knock yourself out and let people see that you have the money to sit there or sit with the rest of us commoners. The bar is broken into technically four areas. The show bar, the dance bar, the entry/lounge and the smoking area. The dance bar is as nice as anything I've ever been to in NYC, Chicago or California. The mix is great. They also have a lot of events in this space, too, like fashion shows and smaller concerts. The drag show is obviously the big draw. "Deeranged," the hostess and emcee is world-class. First, she's classy. Second, she's hilarious. Third, she goes beyond the normal boy-in-a-dress lipsynch and really challenges herself as a theatrical artist. This night, she did "What's Going On" dresses as The Mad Hatter (and not the Party City costume version either) and "Bohemian Rhapsody" as Edward Scissorhands. The entire audience sat in awe the entire 7 to 10 minutes. The other "playmates" are also excellent. I'm not big on the plastic surgery drag queens. I like a full illusion and someone who out of drag shocks you as a boy. Expect a ton of bachelorette parties at the 11 pm show. Ladies, we love you, but GEEZ you can really be disrespectful to the performers. For a more respectful experience, enjoy the 1 am show. If you have problems with loud music, the show mix is actually perfect. Crowd-wise, I really don't know. It changes, it seems. Stereotypically, it's a "twinky" crowd. Oh, and ask for Kyle as your bartender and double tip him. He's amazing!

If I could do 3.5 stars for Play I would. I've been going to Play periodically since the doors first opened. I've had some pretty fun times there and some just "eh" times there. Although I think the difference is usually my mood and level of intoxication, not really anything to do with the place itself. If you're into the whole drag queen thing then this is your place. Personally, I am not too interested in all that and the drag bar area is always way too packed. The dance area is pretty big and looks pretty cool. I like that they have the DJ on the stage now and not up in the top corner. Sometimes the dance floor gets completely packed and your forced to bump into sweaty, half naked men. Sounds like heaven if you're a gay man, right? I wish instead of blowing smoke onto the dance floor they would blow out deodorant. There is nothing worse than trying to get your groove on and being nasal-y assaulted by someone else's funk. Eww. I personally think the barely legal-aged boys dancing around on the bar in their underwear is a bit much. It's kind of gross to watch 40+ aged men drooling all over a 19 yr old boy. Overall, Play is a place I like to come check out about once a year. I realize I'm old now (mid thirties) and I'm sure that has a lot to do with my opinions on the place. However, even if I was younger I could never give this place 5 stars because it will never be as fun or awesome as the mother club it was derived from, The Connection. Or as the regulars/locals called it, Connections. Gosh, I miss those times. :)

I was a tourist that went to Play recently in a large group that was ready to party. Our primary reason for going was to see the Drag Show! Play definitely lived up to our expectations. Though Play is a gay bar, a large group of straight men and women was more than welcome! Both of my attractive male companions did get hit on, but everyone that did took no for an answer. A straight man going to this bar does need to be comfortable with attention, but does not need to be worried about anything inappropriate. The drag show is about an hour long and there are almost no seating. Girls in heels will find their feet hurting! The show does seem to drag a little (no pun intended!) If I hadn't been in a larger group, I would have gone to the dance club portion about half way through the show. The dance club is very fun. Great for a single girl that wants to dance but no be molested by random guys. Music leans more to techno than top 40. Bathrooms are an interesting experience because the signs on the doors don't seem to mean anything. You will find boys making out in the girls restroom and girls doing their makeup next to the urinals. Drink prices are high, but the bartenders are cute and friendly. Service was quick despite the fact that the bar was packed. A Nashville must-do at least once!

There's not much to compare to in Nashville, but Play is the best gay bar in town. It's also the best place to dance on the weekends! They recently revamped the drag show area, and they have their own outside area in the back if you're a smoker. The cover can get expensive on the weekends if you're under 21, so try to go on Wednesdays for College Night (free with a school ID) or Thursdays if you're female (Ladies Night free!).

Play is a great bar IF you have your expectations in check. You need to understand that this bar is an 18+ bar and as such - sometimes you'll see immaturity on display inside. Also, unlike most bars where there are chairs right up at the bar where you can sit, relax and have a drink - Play doesn't have a single chair sitting at the bar. There are some tables and places to sit - just not right at the bar. But, all that being said - if you like drag shows, friendly bartenders and great music from a live DJ - you'll love Play. They do charge a cover - anywhere from 5 dollars on up - depending on the night and the event. I have never been there when you didn't have to pay a cover and that gets on my nerves some times - because I'm an adult and I'm paying to drink - I shouldn't have to pay for the privilege to drink in your establishment. However, I digress. So, aside from the cover - the drinks aren't too expensive. However, I am used to paying 6 bucks for a drink at most other bars - so, paying that here doesn't bug me too much. If you want to get drinks quickly during the drag show - you can go to any one of the 3 bars in the dance area and get served quickly. Once the shows are over - go back into the showroom once the dance floor fills up. Play is basically divided in half. The show bar and the dance bar. There is also an outside patio area both upfront and out the back door where you can go to smoke if you so choose. The bathrooms are huge and very clear - however, being a gay bar the sex rules are a bit more relaxed. So, I frequently see women in the mens bathroom and vice-versa. The dance floor is incredible. It really is! I have had friends from New York and LA fly in to see me and most are just floored at how incredible this dance bar is - in the heart of Nashville none-the-less. At 11 and 1 on Friday and Saturday there is a drag show performed by some very talented drag queens. Occasionally Play will have a special guest visiting to perform - and sometimes they have porn stars or other people are visiting for some special event. If you want the most up-to-date information - its best to visit the website ( Playdancebar.com ) and they have a complete listing of all the events they have coming up. Most people in Nashville visit Tribe (which is next door) early in the evening and visit Play around 10:30 or 11 at night. So, this is a late night club for sure. So, to sum up: Play is a great dance bar - as long as you aren't expecting a quiet night sitting at a bar with soft music. Its a high energy dance club with LOTS of people on the weekend packed shoulder to shoulder. You'll get to see some of the best drag queens in Nashville (or anywhere for that matter). Drinks are reasonable and served up by friendly and handsome bartenders. Go, you'll have fun. Trust me!

5th stop on Dance Recon 2011, we knew this would probably be the best and it was. We had 1 drink and a quick spin on the dance floor with some pounding music and strobes only the foam was missing. The only dance place in Nashville that is clean, not full of students or is skanky dirty. Seems like there is a huge gap in the market on the club scene here. Some porn star was signing autographs last night, pity it was not Uncle Ron. Muz Page we salute Dance Recon 2011.

Gosh, can I remember enough about my former life as an adorable, insane, drag-queen-tipping party girl before I had a baby and became old and un-fun? I'll try. When I moved to Nashville from Memphis, one of the first things I asked my then-boyfriend (now-husband) was, "Ooh, do y'all have a gay bar here??!" I always heard they were really cool. He confirmed and I asked if we could go sometime. Honestly, I wasn't sure if Straighty would be comfortable at one. He said "Sure!" and the next weekend there we were, at Play. We laughed along with the hilarious emcee and I THOROUGHLY enjoyed the drag show! I admit I led a sheltered, religious childhood. I had never seen a drag queen in person and really wasn't convinced they existed outside of movies. The show was high-energy and fun. The bartenders are hot hot and some take their shirts off through the course of the evening. The music is loud and fun. There is a limited amount of seating, so get there early for a decent seat or you'll be standing in a pair of heels for hours. After the show (or during, if you're feeling froggy), you go trough some double doors to another huge room that is a big dance floor with bars and raised seating around it. Music is loud and pumping and a large screen plays music videos. By this time I was always buzzed if not damn drunk, so the room had this ethereal feel to it and bodies just moved and wiggled indiscriminately. My favorite memory of Play was being taught by a very flamboyant guy how to do a good lap dance. Vodka flowing, cool music, a fun show, dancing and partying with strangers who treat you like their BFF? It doesn't get any better. We danced until 2 or 3 am and consequently visited Play many, many more times until I happily found out I was pregnant last year. Ah, those were the days of being young and carefree! I highly recommend it as a clean, safe, fun atmosphere. We were always treated wonderfully even though we were a straight couple at a "gay" bar. When they say "Everyone welcome," you feel like they mean it.

If I ever go clubbing with my girlfriend, I usually have to drag her out of the house. She's just not really into the club scene, or at least that's what I thought until I took her to Play. She actually told me about it. She had been telling me that we should go to Play for several months. I was a bit hesitant at first, as I'm a heterosexual male. I'm not homophobic or anything...I have several gay friends...but the idea of going to a club exclusively for homosexuals didn't really appeal to me that much. Regardless, I was still curious, so a few weeks ago, my girlfriend and I finally went to Play with a few gay friends. When I walked through the door, I was asked for $20 ($10 cover per person). "This better either be really good, or the drinks better be dirt cheap," I was thinking. I typically don't go to clubs with a cover higher than five bucks. When we got past the front desk and out into the club, I was highly impressed! The first room had a large stage, several tables, a huge, full-service bar in the back, and quite a bit of standing room in between. There was also techno/dance music playing. There was no actual dance floor...yet. There was another big room that I hadn't been to yet. The other room was just as large, if not larger. The (quite massive) dance floor was here. We walked through the dance floor to the back, where there were more seats and a smaller bar. One of our friends bought us a round of cranberry vodkas. We then went back to the stage room. I sat down at a table with many questions in my mind. Why was there a stage here? Do they have live music? Do they serve food? My questions were answered almost instantly. The friend who bought our drinks then bought us an appetizer of jalapeño poppers. They were quite tasty. My girlfriend bought me a beer, and we just sat there for a few minutes, jamming out to the energetic dance music. Then my other questions were answered. The DRAG SHOW was announced, as four (or maybe five) beautiful drag queens marched onto the stage. Now, these drag queens weren't just male cross-dressers with shaved legs and pillows in their shirts. The only thing that made them male was the fact that they had an invisible penis. They had breast implants and the whole shebang. There was no way to tell they were men. I wouldn't have known if they didn't say anything. The show began with all the queens dancing and lip-syncing an old Broadway show tune together. After that, each one had their own little dance routine. They each did three or four songs. Some were local to Play, and some were from out of town. I can't remember their names, but my two favorites were the "Barbie doll" one (a tall, model-esque blonde), and the one with large, red, poofy hair. During the show, I got up and ordered an excellent bloody Mary that's worth noting. It was less tomatoey and more Worcestershirey than your average Bloody Mary, and if I remember correctly, it was made from scratch, not a mix. I'll definitely be ordering one next time I go. Anyway, we all left not long after the drag show was over. It was totally worth the experience. I had never seen a live drag show before, and after seeing it, I can understand why the cover was so high. I still think it should have been a bit less (maybe more like $7), which is why I rated this four stars instead of five. If the cover was $5 or less, it would have easily gotten a five-star rating. I definitely plan on going back though. Next time, I'm actually going to dance...I didn't get a chance to actually get on the dance floor. So if you have plenty of spare money to burn one night, burn it on Play. You won't regret it, even if you're straight like me!

So this one time I agreed to sing Sonny's part in "I've got you babe" onstage during Play's Sunday karaoke night. My (male) Cher definitely stole the show. Other karaoke acts included angry lady music ala Ani DiFranco, a little Marilyn Manson and definitely some classic Dolly Parton. In fact, "Cher" and I were going to sing "Islands in the Stream," with me being Kenny Rogers of course, but someone else had already sang it! Jealous! OK enough about karaoke. Now dancing. This other time I was convinced to hop into one of those dance circles where one person takes the center and shows off a move then steps out. SO glad that's not on tape. Last time I went they played a lot of Robyn remixes which I was happy to hear. The drag shows are great. Deception, Dee Ranged and Nicole Ellington Dupree (my fave) are fun. Sunday nights are "Amateur nights," which are definitely what that name implies, but the performers were, at least, really earnest. Sundays are also "service worker nights" where if you bring your paystub from a service job you get in free! I also tried Wednesday college night which was super packed, but nice to not pay cover. I think Thursdays have a Drag King show (I haven't been). There's a ~$25 minimum on cards which is kind of a bummer. If you end up having to pay cover, it can be up to $10. The coat check is really convenient and people are generally pretty friendly. Now that Decades is closed this will definitely be my go-to dancing place in Nashville. Look for me showin' off my moves!

My first foray into Play was on New Year's, so it was packed. Wall-to-wall people in the bar area (a few tables, bar, and a stage for the drag shows) and really just a solid writhing mass on the dance floor. We stuck to the bar area and the drag show was fantastic. On par with any I've seen in bigger cities, if not better. The space is just perfect for it and there isn't really a bad vantage point. Drinks were reasonable and everyone was friendly. I didn't attempt to hit that particular dance floor - I like a little personal space to work it out (I'm not anti-social, but you know, it gets sweaty), so we retreated back to the smaller but somehow more spacious dance floor at Tribe. I'll be back to try it on a non-holiday weekend, for sure.

WERK! My goodness! I was taken out to play last night and I had no idea I was going to have so much fun! For a Wednesday night the place was packed! At least to my standards it was packed. The drag show was off the hook, seriously, queens be working that stage like Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls - BOOM! I had a blast, laughed so hard I almost peed my pants, danced like a slut on the dance floor and drank a good few generously poured cocktails. Do yourself a favor and go "play" while you're in town. I may just have to go back one more time before we leave!

i'm only giving this 4 stars because while the bartenders were so nice, the prices on our beers changed from $4 to $5 a couple times for the same kind of beer. having said that, we had SO much fun. we went with a group of about 9 people. the drag show was entertaining and we didn't stop dancing the entire night. i guess it all depends on your level of intoxication and who you are with, but i will definitely go back!

Play was packed out for the Friday night drag show. There seemed to be a good mix of people there - lots of girls and straight guys for a gay club. The people lining up to give money to the drag queens remind me of the communion lines in mass in a weird way. I couldn't get that comparison out of my drunk mind, which made the whole experience kind of surreal. The drag show wasn't really that great, although the girls looked phenomenal, but they really just came out and mimed to songs; they didn't really do anything except take money from the people lining up to give it to them. If you go, remember that Play only takes cash, has a cover charge (ours was $8) and has expensive drinks. I inadvertently ordered a $9 drink, but that's to be expected for a club. I haven't been on a dancing night, but the drag show certainly draws a full house.

Five stars strictly for the two-steppin' brother on the down low, who was all up in the building and feelin' himself. and five extra stars in spirit for the drag queen who did Hot n Cold by Katy Perry.

Had a blast with a great crowd and bartenders. The drag show was an unexpected treat.

Allow me to preface my review by just saying the following: I am not a gay man. And I'm certainly not saying this because I'm close-minded or a homophobe or anything like that. It's just that this is the only gay club I've ever been to and I have absolutely no point of reference. That being said, I think this place is pretty great! I went on a Wednesday night, which is the best time to go for college students. You get in free with your school i.d., and it also happens to be one of their many drag nights. I walked into the pulsating, vibrant front room to find an elaborately costumed 6'2" version of Beyonce lip-syncing disco hits as one of my straight buddies thrust dollar bills at him/her. There is a dance room in the back that, while it is like most other blinding, strobe party dance clubs, seems to be more welcoming than most. Nobody there seems to care if you're gay or straight--only that you aren't a buzzkill. The drink prices are about average, and Play has crazy events nearly every night of the week. "Big Wig Parties" and "Student Body Contests" are two of the more popular events...according to their website. I've only been to Play once, but the truth is I'd love to go again. It's full of really nice people just looking to have fun, and there ain't a thing wrong with that.

Eff this place! So my experience in all likelihood would not apply to any man/boy, because I'm a very hetero looking girl. Last weekend a group of friends and I started out at 12th and Porter for dancing, which was a blast (and $1 cover as compared with Play's ridiculous $10 cover). However, I was outnumbered by my friends who wanted to go to Play. I have been to Play countless times, always under the same circumstances (well, ever since the first time I willingly went and was disappointed). Here's what I've found on my many trips there: In one room, there is a drag show. One of the drag queens is funny and entertaining, although this show has nothing on San Francisco drag shows, but since we're not in SF I'll let that slide. In the other room, there's a dance floor/bar and a DJ. Everytime I have been, they played Eurohouse, very "untz untzy", uninteresting beats. I'm all about dance music, but I prefer what Y2K events at 12th and Porter have to offer, which is updated, has an indie/disco twist, and generally attracts a more interesting and diverse crowd. Gays and straights abound, whereas Play caters to gay men and largely leaves others out of the mix. Anyway, back to my story. I had three beers last Saturday, which I assure you does not get me drunk. The stuck up guy at the front refused me entrance because "by law they couldn't serve me". Yet 18 year old boys can get in with a bracelet. Hmmmm.... When it became apparent that I was flocked with a crowd of handsome gay men, the manager wouldn't back down because they already made their lame stance. Anyways, suffice it to say I now have a wonderful excuse to ever be dragged to this overpriced, uninviting, discriminating club where I prefer not to go anyway, so in the end everyone's happy. If that sounds fun, have at it! By the way, Nashville as I know it is open-minded and no one has to go to a "gay club" in order to meet gay people or gay friendly folks. Skip it!

If you are looking for a good dance club, then Play is surely a hotspot. Yes, it's a gay bar. As the previous reviews state. But, as a straight girl, I have to say it is SO FUN. I go here maybe once a year (but should more often) with a group of girlfriends just to dance. And not be hit on by total losers. It's fantastic! The bartenders make excellent drinks, the music is mostly "house" as they say, but it's loud and pumping through the dance floor. Everyone is nice--as previous reviewers state, no one here cares if you are gay or straight, male or female, everyone is just here for a good time. I highly recommend it. Oh and the drag shows are an absolute hoot. I haven't been to many drag shows (actually this is the only place I've seen them) but I have to admit it's difficult to tell if some of these guys are actually guys at all! They are that good. So, if you are looking to just go out to a great dance club with your friends, you have to come to Play. You won't regret it!

I love gay clubs and Play is the best that I have been too. It is def. more guys than girls, but then again, they might call themselves girls! I always have a blast and look forward to the drag shows which are always jam packed. If you go, see if Micah can serve your drinks as he is very reasonable and very fast.

Play is the dance bar to go to in Nashville, gay or straight. The music is amazing, and there is always a line of people on the weekends waiting to get in. There's a cover charge, which I'm not usually a fan of, but I think it is worth it to get in to Play. I will say it seems like a very young crowd that frequents Play, and I'm not even that old! Just lots of college kids since I think you only have to be 18 to get in. Play is a gay bar, but there is a big mix of people who go there to dance and have a good time. Play is a huge place split in to two distinct spaces. The front bar has a stage where there are usually drag shows, and there is dancing and a dj in the back. Play brings in all kinds of guests. Kimberly Locke was there; Ultra Nate and Kristine W. were there for Pride. And it seems like every other week there is a porn star. Seriously. Everyone is at Play to have a good time whether they are scoping out the drag show (and the guys) in front or they are on the dance floor in the back. Definitely a fantastic addition to the Nashville nightlife, and a great dance spot, gay or straight.

Drag in the front, circuit in the back! My friend and I enjoyed the Saturday night dance crowd mostly because it included: * A super hot cracked out boy who kept swaying against the bar * A man whose hair looked like a pile of hay * An octogenarian couple that looked like they had been riding tractors earlier in the day * A Whitney Houston look-alike in the drag show Seriously, it was great to see such a diverse crowd coexisting in one happy place!

Play is a great Nashville Club. Most of the clients are gay but everyone is welcome. College students can get in for free on wednesdays and sundays with college id. They have drag shows on wednesdays, fridays, and saturdays. The shows are great and the music is awesome. A large dance floor and speakers bumping give the club a larger city vibe. If you feel like singing, come by for the karaoke on sundays. Always a large crowd and the drink prices are reasonable. If you are looking for a change from the boring clubs in Nashville, Play is the way to go.

I adore play. Seriously, adore it. However, I'll start with the things that I don't like so as to end on a good note. I hate their $10 cover charge (even when its 1:30am and you are just trying to find a overly drunk friend that you need to drive home), and I hate their idiot cop bouncer, seriously, hate. Now for all the things I love. I love their amazing drag shows; I especially love Nicole. There is no better place to go with a bunch of girls to have some cocktails, do some dancing, and watch a show without having to deal with the annoyance of getting harassed by severely inebriated men. I love the amazing dance battles that seem to be a regular occurrence. For the actual dancing I would go on Thursday nights when its more likely that they will be playing hip hop rather than gay boy techno in the main dance room. Sunday night is service industry night so if you bring a pay stub, your in for free. Last but not least, Wednesday is college night, and a simple college I.D. gets you in free of charge. Also a reminder: though the crowd is amazingly diverse with gay and straight and in the middle people scattered everywhere, it is in fact a gay bar, so if that bothers you this is probably not your scene.

Good lawd. I had such a FUN time here. From the talented drag performances that had me entranced to the stiff cocktails and friendly crowd... this is a spot to get your party-on. We were a bit tipsy but brought a large group to hang out in the VIP box so we certainly spoiled. Thanks Suzy Wong! Everyone and anyone would have a good time here.

This is not the place for a quiet get-together, but if you're looking for a GREAT drag show - you know, where the queens are constantly reinventing themselves and putting TONS of effort into shows - this is the place. Drinks are reasonably priced and there are plenty of nights that you can get there before 11 for $0 cover. This is definitely not the place to come sit down for a drink, this is definitely a SHOW and DANCE bar. People tend to get a little rowdy, but security does their best at discreetly removing not-so-discreet people. If you're down for a little supervised ridiculousness, come in the right mind-set and have a drink and enjoy the show ;)

After getting a tip from the bartender at Tribe, next door, to check out Play - I have to say, I was very impressed! The main part of the club has a stage, tables and a basic bar (no draft beer, just bottles) with the emcee/projection area neatly tucked away above the bar on the floor above. It was ladies night - and a Drag King competition was about to commence. I have never seen so many young lesbians - all under drinking age - and so much hand-holding! It was like stepping into another planet. I don't see a lot of lesbian hand holding at the places I go to in the bay area - but then, aside from Dolores Park on Dyke March, I would be hard pressed to find a weekly event with this many goddamned lesbians walking around of any age! YEE HA! OTOH, I did feel very grandmotherly at my advanced age (early 40s) - til I was adopted by a drunk extroverted gay man and his "roommate" and dragged off to the dance floor after the Drag King competition was over. Be forewarned - they use dry ice or something to make the dance room "smoky" - and that stuff just irritated my lungs, so I didn't stick around in there long. The Drag King competition was fantastic - it was way better than any similar show I have attended in San Francisco. In SF, stuff gets overly sexualized in the name of "sex poz" -- and here, it was women doing the same kind of lip sync show you would see quality drag queens do - but as very tiny versions of men (vs men doing very large versions of women). It was really fun - a delight - and some of the performances were really fantastic. The costumes/characters and music they selected were all pretty varied and reflected distinct tastes. I missed the Friday/Saturday night drag queen shows - I heard the audience tends to be a bit older, and I would have loved to connect with women my own age - perhaps next time!
