I haven't been to a Japanese hibachi restaurant since I moved from Nashville over 11 years ago. Thus when I heard there was going to be a birthday party at Mikado I was kind of excited since it has been so long. We were seated in a private dining room that had two grills in the middle and seats all the way around. We only had one chef though because our party didn't quite go all the way around the second grill. No problem though. The way these places work is like this: choose your meat (steak, chicken, shrimp, combos of the above, or seafood mix) and get ready for food overload. Each meal comes with a soup, salad (with that awesome Asian sauce on it), fried rice, meat, two pieces of shrimp as appetizer, veggies (broccoli, carrots, onions, Japanese cabbage?), and a small dessert. All one price, somewhere around $25-35. So then the chef comes out and does all his tricks. Flames! Funny jokes! "Birthday candle" made out of a stack of onions! Etc and so forth. The more you interact the more they perform I think. We were too busy talking so he kind of stopped trying to impress after a while. Then, when your meat selection is done, he puts it on your plate. How was it? Soup - ok, nothing special. Salad - fresh and I love that dressing! Veggies were so good. Chicken - wasn't a big fan or maybe was too stuffed by then. Steak - he cooked it somewhat medium rare (more like medium) but it was my favorite and I ate all of it (explains why the chicken was not interesting me). Fried rice was great since it includes all that butter and also fried eggs. Yum! Drinks: everyone loves the Mikado special. I tried one - it is a mix of rum, amaretto, southern comfort, and other stuff. Tasted pretty orangey and very sweet but was deceptively potent. After that sweet drink I ordered a dirty martini and let's just say...stick with the specialty drinks. That dirty martini was as dirty as a 15 year old virgin choirgirl. I'm an adult - make it dirrrrrty. Like X-rated nassssty! Oh well, I still drank it. So overall I had a fun experience and the food was good. I can see coming back when I get the craving for a hibachi experience.

Nice little Japanese Steak House. We only had to wait a tiny 10 minutes to be seated (granted it was a Sunday evening), but the waiting area was nice, and we had the option to wait at the bar. Once we were seated at our table, the waitress was prompt to come get our drink orders and brought us hot soup and salad. The salad dressing is AMAZING...and even better, they sell it by the container if you love it so much that you want to take some home. Once the show....I mean meal, got started it was nonstop fun. Everything offered looked tasty, but I will say that the scallops I had were only average. Next time I go back I will stick with the shrimp and maybe add some steak. All in all, a wonderful hibachi experience!

I went here for a birthday party for a friend. The bartender (Leigh?) was really fun. The presentation and preparation of the food was entertaining and it was tasty. I got the chicken/steak combo. The chicken was a little dry but the steak was good. The fried rice and different sauces were very good.

I don't know but something is off about this restaurant. For one, is once you walk in it feels like you are back in the 70's/80's. The food is not great, but laced with sodium rich soy sauce. Their wait staff are clueless about their menu and borderline dumb. I can't believe their waitress had the audacity to tell me to order with numbers because she does not know the items off the menu. The hibachi chefs performed with a bad Asian accent telling very bad jokes. Unfortunately, all the chefs play off the same script like they just arrived in America. I felt like I was in a very bad kung- fu movie with lip sync English spoken by the chef. It is sad that some of their customers actually enjoy this type of entertainment and feed off this type of stereotype. Not a restaurant I'll be revisiting.

I went here with some coworkers for dinner when we were working late. The first thing you can tell is that it's been here for quite a while. This is not to say that it looks shabby or is falling apart, it just has a very 80's feel to it. I actually kind of like that aspect. The food itself is your standard hibachi fare; pick your protein, and it comes with veggies, rice, a couple shrimp, and sorbet for dessert. The food was by no means bad, but it wasn't anything spectacular either. Especially not for the price. I've honestly had better hibachi for less. In fact, the price is why I most likely will not be returning to Mikado. The service was good, the "show" was entertaining, the food was fairly tasty, but it just costs more than it should. I guess they're able to charge this price because they're so well-established; I imagine they have a lot of long-time regular customers. I'm sure it also helps that there really isn't any direct competition in the area. If I disregarded price, I'd give this place four stars. But hey, at least at the end of my meal I received a fortune cookie within a fortune cookie. Can't say that's ever happened to me before.

Best Japanese Steakhouse you will ever visit. Best food I have ever had. My family and I have been going here for years. In fact, my mom started dining here in college and has been going back ever since. The ONLY negative thing that I can say about this fabulous place is that they have obviously not updated at all. The sofa and chairs in the waiting area are pretty old and gross looking. I hope that they will update at some point, because that is not the type of setting this fabulous food and service should be surrounded by!

Just finished dinner, was delicious. Had the steak and chicken. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was I asked for medium steak and it was well. The service was excellent an the show was good. I have seen some reviews here complaining about price but for the amount of food you get it is a very good price. I usually leave these grills hungry and I left here stuffed. I would return it was a nice change and satisfying.

Good food & atmosphere. More vegetables would have been nice but none the less it was awesome

The best hibachi grill around! They have a comfortable waiting area with couches and chairs or you can wait for a table in the bar area. Great drinks and strong too! The salad is great, comes with your meal, and we love the ginger dressing they put on it too. You get miso soup too with your meal. Considering what miso soup is made out of its actually good. It taste like chicken noodle soup without the chicken or the noodles. BEWARE you get A LOT of food with your meal choices. So now that you have had your salad and your soup your chef comes out and does his performance. They do the volcano with the fire coming out of the top, the comedy act, and the tail flinging thing. Kids totally love this part! You get a crap ton of fresh hot off the grill fried rice, shrimp as an appetizer, fresh grilled veggie and your meat choice. Chicken is amazing, steak is good, shrimp is good, and the lobster is great! The price is a little expensive but you seriously walk away with a whole other meal because you wont be able to finish all of this food!

We love to come here to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. The food is excellent and the cooks put on a good show for you and are pretty energetic! We have been 3 times since living here, and 2 out of 3 experiences were fantastic! The only problem we had (which is why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5) was that our anniversary trip we took there, we waited an hour and a half!!! This was outrageous and we almost just left. We decided to stick around since it was late and we wouldn't have a whole lot of other options besides fast food. When we finally got seated, we were placed next to a table of girls who were WAY PAST drunk. They were yelling at the top of their lungs and cussing up a storm. It was the most rude I have ever seen anyone act in a restaurant such as this one. Their behavior was more suited for a club or bar. It took a good 45 minutes of us being sat down at the table and eating before any staff EVER came to tell them to be quiet, and they didn't really even tell them to be quiet. It was just the bartender coming to tell them that they were cut off. So this upset the girls and they yelled and screamed for another 5 minutes or so, and then left on their own. Hopefully they weren't driving after that, but who knows. I was just very offended by the behavior and that no managers ever came to do anything about it. It ruined our anniversary experience, and thank goodness it was late enough to where there were no children in the restaurant having to listen to all that vulgar conversation. I am by no means a prude, but what they were yelling about evem had ME embarrassed!

Have been dining at this restaurant for over 15 years. It's one of my favorites. I know most of the chefs, the bartender, the host and the owner. Not only is the food great but the show is pretty awesome too! Love this place... always feel welcome!

Mikado is a Benihana stuck on the 80s. I will fully admit that I had exceedingly low expectations after walking in. There's a lingering smell from the carpets I couldn't seem to get past. The decor is drab and the flat top grills have a smell to them which reminds me of uncleaned George Forman grills during my college years. As I sat down at the table I couldn't help but focus on the black grit build up on the corners of the grill from years of cooking. I wanted to take a qtip and dig it out. Cleanliness aside, I was rather happy with the food received. The guy preparing the food was definitely skilled and had a nice sense of humor. Much appreciated after a long day's work. The rice was by far the standout of the night while the chicken and steak were both overcooked. I guess that can happen when diced into small pieces and left on a lava hot grill for too long. Mikado would be better if they dropped the boring soup and salad to start and focused more on grill preparation. Clean the place up, make it flashier and put food first. The crowds will come.

Grew up eating here. Your crazy if you don't like it!! Miss it all the time now that I don't live in nashville. A little dirty, but the food is excellent. Better than any Japanese steakhouse I have ever been to. Ginger salad dressing is amazing.

Overall a pretty decent experience. We had an older cook who was incredibly skilled & entertaining...and really knew how to engage the people at the table. (4.89 on entertainment) Liked the marinade on the chicken...not so much on the steak. (3.75 on food) The primary exception to our experience was the waitress who was a bit mediocre. Not responsive (inattentive), slow, and miscalculated the check twice. I hope she is not the usual expectation for service. I would be hard pressed to remember slower service in the last year or two. (1.85 out of 5) Makes no sense why they have a 50/50 split between waitress & cook (as we were told) at a place like this unless the cooks make bank before tips (perhaps they do). Probably par for the course on most accounts, except for entertainment (the older guy really seemed to love his job & be genuinely good at it). Overall Score = 3.49999 out of 5

Mikado is just below mediocre in my book. Came here for a friend's birth day, obviously not my choice but good for a big group. Entertainment wise it was ok, the chef did all the usual tricks, onion volcano etc etc etc... I'll spare you the rest of the details. I ordered the Mikado Special, lobster tail, filet mignon & chicken. All entrees come with shrimp, soup, salad, veggies, rice, and a dessert. Lobster tail was completely overcooked, it tasted like rubbery squid. The filet was overcooked and swimming in god awful sauce. The chicken was edible. Sauced drenched, overcooked beef/chicken/seafood, tossed in soy sauce, and passed off as Japanese food. After my experience, I was reminded why I never consider going to any teppanyaki restaurants. I guess it's ok if you're drunk and don't care that you're paying $35 for dismal food.

Mikado's was great. I went with my 3 yr old son and my friend and her 5 yr old daughter. It was a little weird when we walked in. Trying to figure whether we needed to wait for a hostess or what?? When we walked in, the building is a bit dated, and had a weird smell in the entrance. But once we walked in the smell was gone. The soup and salad were good. It would be nice to get a dressing option on the salad. All of them came with 1000 Island Dressing (it seemed) and its not my fav. The chef was the best. Very entertaining and the food was delicious. I had so much Left over it could have fed 2 ppl the next day. And we did! Definitely will be back.

I chose to go to Mikado with my family last night because it was my birthday and was in the mood for a good hibachi restaurant. I have been to Mikado in the past and it was excellent. However, that was several years ago and it has apparently gone downhill since. First of all, the hibachi was dirty. I noticed it right off as soon as we sat down and figured the chef would clean it when he arrived. We received our soup and salad very quickly and they were very good. However, the waitress was not very attentive about refilling our drinks. When the chef arrived, he cleaned the hibachi but not as thoroughly as I hoped. There were still some dirty places on the grill. He was a decent chef but went through the motions with little personality. He did not go out of his way to put on a show like the better chefs I have experienced. I noticed some other chefs in the restaurants who were putting much more effort into pleasing their customers. The food was pretty good but not nearly as good as I have had there in the past. Maybe we just had a mediocre chef who was tired of doing his job. Dessert was served promptly and was a nice follow up to the meal we had eaten. It was a scoop of orange sherbet with a fortune cookie. Nice was to clean the palate. Finally, and this is a real pet peeve of mine, it took the waitress forever to bring the check. We had been sitting there for a long time and were ready to get up, stretch our legs, and go home. Something tells me that we would have had a much better experience, and meal, if we had a different chef and waitress. I will give Mikado another try in the future.
