It only took me about 2 minutes inside Bar 23 to realize this bar was trying way too hard to be hip. The upstairs lounge is the only part that actually is cool, but it's almost always closed off. I had written this place off, but then VBS, the weekly dance parties DJd by Justin Kase started there so I was peer-pressured into giving it another chance. On those nights they have $3 wells till 11 so that's a great feature. The last time I went though my dancing was hampered by the sticky evil that attached to my shoes. Apparently the glue was coming off the floor in the seating sections, and once you had been in it for a while your shoes stuck to the floor all night. So if you ever think to yourself should I go to Bar 23 and check out the scene, unless the day is Thursday the answer is "no." Even then, be prepared for the crowd to be the young hipster set mixed with shiny Vandy candy and their boys. Lately I've been hearing rumor that Bar 23 is giving up their lease along with a few other Gulch businesses such as Adagio to make room for Urban Outfitters. I don't think anyone will miss it since they can get the same atmosphere done better in at least 5 other bars in town.

Two stars for let's see...location--right in the middle of the Gulch, next to great restaurants, and the fact that it's pretty obscure and for some reason I think that's cool (look at the picture--just a building, no real sign except for a very small one that you can't even see that just has dots on it). Like Rahel, maybe I'm too old for this place. I don't even know what type of crowd usually goes here though. Just know it's not my crowd. Now, I've been here once and had a great time--that was several years ago, before they completely redid the upstairs (it's VIP only now apparently) and you could have private parties up there on this catwalk-style loft overlooking the bar. THAT was pretty cool. I attended one of those parties and that's when I had fun. Alas, those days are over though. Let's get right down to it: Cons: Expensive drinks ($10 for a shot of vodka and soda?), loud thumping music to where you can't even talk to anyone, it's a little more than cheesy, and there is a NYC-style "bouncer" at the door--complete with velvet ropes--that makes you wait in line even if it's not crowded inside. Ridiculous, this is Nashville. Pros: It's right next to Watermark and Sambuca, so if you are eating there and want an after-dinner cocktail in a totally different atmosphere, it's just steps away. Also right next door to City Hall (music venue), and often if there is a concert there Bar Twenty 3 will have some sort of special in connection with it. It's a totally different type of bar scene than most of Nashville offers, so when you are tired of the same ole' same ole' this could be for you. Just be prepared to "dress to impress" (that was actually on their door once) and pay a lot to drink.

This bar irritates me. I used to go here when it was new and a fresh spot on the map, but now it's just a place for cougars, overly-tanned girls dressed like hookers and wearing more makeup than Ronald McDonald, and sweaty men with jelled hair and "hey guy" silky shirts who try to do those drive-by-dance moves to catch you in their gin and tonic grip. In the words of Leslie K, "this is the human equivalent to dogs sniffing each other butts." This bar is trying to be something it isn't. It comes off as forced and pretentious, and trying to be some west coast lounge that really just comes across as a lame imitation. Personally, to get really sloshed, I prefer to go Downtown to the honky-tonks.

I hate this place. Maybe I'm beginning to show my age, but the music is way too loud, the lighting is way too low, the drinks are way too expensive ($45 for 4 vodka tonics), and the people seem too immature to know manners (I had drinks spilled on me at least 3 times without one i'm sorry). I just figured out where this bar got its name...maybe you need to be 23 or younger to like this place.

pretentious adj. Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified. Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious. See Synonyms at showy. Anyone who tells you this place is cool is lying. It's LA reincarnated in all its superficial splendor. Should they deign to let you past the velvet rope and up the stairs, you'll be forced to listen to some cheesy guy with his shirt unbuttoned a couple too many tell you all about how superior the newest tracks he just laid down are... Spare me! this place is just trying too hard

This bar/club is not a good place for you to go w/ a group of friends. first, it's small, and second, the music sucks. However, the decor is very modern w/ nice loungy sofas/couches and would fit in nicely somewhere in LA. I've been finding more of modern looking places in Nashville here and there, but it just feels out of place. I'm not stating that there shouldn't be such place, but it feels as if these places are lost and doesn't attract the crowd. Like many places in Nashville, the crowd is all over the place, it's like the club has some sort of identity issues. hahaha. I would recommend this place for someone on a date. Perhaps go to Sam Bucca for dinner and walk over to Bar Twenty3 for some drinks and dancing for it's small venue. but for the rest of the folks that are looking to go have fun, i wouldn't really recommend this place unless you're drunk and don't give a you know what. =]

Alright...now we're talking trendy. Uber-trendy, hip-to-the-core, pulsating late night bar scene. If none of the preceding sounds intriguing to you, stop reading right now. Bar Twenty 3 is the post-modern-looking, high-ceilinged bar in the Gulch nestled next to City Hall. To be absolutely honest with you, I can't remember too much about drink prices. From what I can recall, there are occasional two-for-ones and other typical specials. All I can truly tell you about my three trips to Bar Twenty 3 is that the place is seems to perpetually be packed with wall-to-wall crowds of grinding hipsters--and these aren't your typical brand of hipsters. These are the type of people that are fueled by Cosmopolitans and may or may not ever sleep at night. The lighting seems to be exceptionally low, leading me to wonder exactly what the place looks like in daylight...not sure I want to know. The music is typically pounding dance remixes at an unnecessarily dangerous volume. Once I was fortunate enough to glimpse the upstairs VIP, but it seemed to be identical to the downstairs only with a small amount of seating. If you're out on the town, perhaps celebrating a birthday or some other special occasion, Bar Twenty 3 is a perfectly reasonable stop in a long stream of barhopping exploits. But if you're not into having to shout your drink order at the top of your lungs and promptly spilling it when you're slammed into by a gyrating shiny man in a silk shirt, I don't recommend it.

A kind of modern bar/lounge with more of a club feel, it's a hot spot in Nashville's artsy and growing "The Gulch" area. The super crowded and rowdy atmosphere - the reason i am not so much a club person - takes away from the chic and simple decor. The music was well below par, as the DJ played off beat tracks and repeated current pop over a period of just 30 minutes. There was no flow or continuity to get me in the mood for partying. It was a much younger and casual crowd, although very diverse, the sense that it was more of a locals joint was what I got.

Pretty much read Ellen F's review. Decent though for the Gulch halloween party. Otherwise.....blah.

I guess this is a "club" but it feels less intense than what that word implies. The space is not huge, which helps, with an a good layout... plenty of counter spaces to stand around or open seating areas, or space that can become dance area. Music is so-so. Crowd is exceptionally diverse, good-looking, and intriguing. Part of this might be the good location in the Gulch, often some spill over from whatever is going on next door at City Hall venue.
