We went to Jim's the other night for my wife's birthday. On the reservation, I asked if they could just make her feel nice. THEY WENT ALL OUT! Our table was different than others, including a couple flowers, they greeted her by name with multiple people telling her happy birthday, the manager came by to tell her, and they provided a complimentary pie slice with happy birthday written in raspberry sauce. They really did an amazing job with the request. The food was really good. It was my first visit and I ordered the seafood platter. Salmon was great, crab cake was really good, but the scallop needed to be improved (thus the 4 stars instead of 5). I wish I could give 4.5 b/c my wife's shrimp made up for that scallop. The side items were also pretty good too. I recommend the place. It's kind of tucked away, which made it private, but the service was incredible. Next time I go back I'll have to try their steak (they have a surf and turf special on Friday night)! Thanks guys!

Held a rehearsal dinner here. We had been in constant contact to keep them up to date on head count etc. We showed up at our expected time and all seemed well. Then the wheels fell off. apps were ready, but getting drinks was a nightmare. Salads took over an hour even though we had a pre-arranged set menu. Things went from bad to worse. All main dishes came out after another incredibly long wait. Some dinners came out nearly 30 minutes after others. One waiter was very rude towards a couple of the wedding party who were visiting between tables. He said " excuse me, I'm trying to work" No excuse for that! The whole experience turned all of us off on Jim's Place! Go else where for functions with more than a handful of people. This place was the best before they sold and moved locations!

Flew in late from KC and went straight here. Grilled shrimp appetizer was perfectly cooked. New York strip was seasoned properly and grilled to perfection. I'm a regular here, when I'm in town!

People seem to love Jims, especially our higher ups here at work. I am just not a fan. I've been going multiple times a year for a few years now and I've yet to try something that I truly enjoyed.

Jims: good food, average decor, not especially good service. I had been here a couple times before (not remarkable), but had not in several years and decided to re-try it. Ordered what I consider block and tackling food: ribeye for me and salmon for my daughter. Both were good, but then if you have good cuts you have to try and ruin them so not necessarily challenging. The decor is fine, a bit Potterybarnish, but otherwise unremarkable. The thing that was so remarkable was the service. It's clear the place is filled with regulars maybe that's what they do only, though I live less than a mile away and should be. The time delays between stuff were very bad. My wine ran out and I had to get more at the bar myself, I was never visited after the order was placed except to take plates away and even had to hand payment to a 2nd server. If I am going to pay $100+ I expect better. There's other places that do better, buy from them.

The first time I ate here was totally different from the second time as far as atmosphere. The first time I was at the bar and I was enjoying a quick bite of there lamb burger. It was tasty. Seemed like a nice spot for young professionals and the East Memphis crowd. The second time I went we sat in the back and we saw what looked like an Upscale crowd of senior citizens who prefer Jims Place over Picadiily. Now while that didnt bother me I did think it was absolutely funny how they have mastered to seperate the two. Grant it I absolutely understand why they put us over there. We did have the little one with us. And this place clearly isn't used to that bc they didn't even have high chairs. It sucks bc our baby actually acts wonderful in public that's why we bring him with us alot vs getting a sitter. Not really needed, for now at least. The menu is your typical grille food. But just because it is typical does not mean it isn't perfected and absolutely delicious here!! My meal was so good. We enjoyed huge portions of meat and veggies and a whole bottle of wine! Our server was hilarious and he handled those big tables just as well as he handled ours. you could tell he had been doing that for a while now. I would love to go back for another date night and enjoy the other side next time.

Had the valentine's day dinner (steak). I was underwhelmed...the service was mediocre and the food was good but not $$$ good. Probably not going back. May try the other location one evening.

I love the place for its happy hour specials, tasty and affordable food, and the courteous staff. The Grouper Pontchartrain has always been a winner. Check other outlets for coupons, as well.

Absolutely great bar, with equally great bartenders to go with it. Good wine list with decent assortment. Food is always really good, bordering on great. Wait staff is competent and courteous. Bar tends to be a great people watching scene. It is definitely my favorite restaurant bar in East Memphis.

This food is some kind of good. The souflima is fabulous, as is all the seafood and the steaks. They've got the best, and possibly the only, lamb burger is in town. Frankly, you can't go wrong with any of it.

This was a strong choice for my birthday dinner. The menu was full of good options. On a side note... the menus themselves need to be updated. They have residue from the old wine list making it difficult to see anything. The beer list is comprehensive and the appetizers did their job. Our waitress was knowledgeable. We started with the puff pastries and I had the lamp chops with rice pilaf. I was impressed for sure. Check this place out for sure.

Even if only for the people watching (let alone the amazing food), I give this place a hearty five stars. I love the fact that this upscale, quality East Memphis restaurant can offer me a romantic evening for two AND a vibrant bar atmosphere. What is usually a rare combo, Jim's Place has managed to successfully attain. Since there aren't that many of them, nice East Memphis restaurants are always packed. Jim's Place is no exception. If you are planning on a weekend night, plan to wait a good bit. The bright side is that you'll get to wait in one of the most lively upscale bars in Memphis! You may just end up having so much fun that you decide to eat on the bar side as well. As for the food, JIm's place has some great options and offers TWO sides with every entree (another big plus). There are entree selections starting at $15, so you don't have to break the bank to have a nice dinner. Sit back, relax and enjoy the atmosphere!

Jim's place really blew all of my expectations of a stereotypical old person fancy restaurant. I received a $100 gift card from an online contest and was excited to give it a try considering I live right down the street. The wait staff was really great. The waiter, though, took a little bit longer than I would have liked to wait but it seemed like they were short staffed. My friend and I had the bruschetta appetizer which was a lot of food for an appetizer, then enjoyed MONSTROUS dinner portions. I ordered the almond crusted catfish with asparagus and loaded baked potato. My friend ordered the chicken parmesan with loaded baked potato and rice pilaf. Our portions, like I said before, were really large and we really shouldn't have but we ordered dessert. Their dessert menu is on their beer and wine menu so you have to be careful or you'll miss it. I had a chocolate cake with caramel, pecans and toffee on it and it was delicious. My friend had the traditional chocolate cake and it was great as well. So we had an appetizer, two entrees, and two desserts and the bill was only $65 which I did not think was bad at all. I'll be back :)

Good service... Mixed reviews on the food. Its OK but not super and not worth the prices they charge. The $30 rib eye was disappointing. I had a pork appetizer that reminded me of three day old left over Thanksgiving Turkey. The prime rib sand which was good. The menus were hard to read. They have an item known as the "chefs pasta" listed at market price, but when J asked about this...I was informed they do not off this any more. Perhaps they should update the menu. I have no desire to return.

I'm a 20 year old college student so to me it was a little pricy. To someone with a career it would be reasonable. Our waitress did not want to help us but we were so charming he warmed up to us. It would be a great place for a business meeting...there is not a children's menu so it wouldn't be considered kid friendly.

I adore this place. On one side it is a nice, formal sit-down place and on the other it is people watching heaven. Business men and families on one side...people on dates, co-workers grabbing a beer, or girls nights on the other. The menu is delicious and the waiters are always courteous. This is my go-to place in East Memphis!

If you have lived in Memphis for at least 20 years, you savor the memories of Jim's Place East. It was such a little gem tucked beneath the trees off Summer avenue. Now that location is vacant and two mediocre restaurants replace one great restaurant. We received a gift certificate for Jim's grille for our birthday and decided to take a mid week date night. Our reservation was for 645. We chose to eat in the bar so that we can watch the Grizzlies basketball game. We ordered our food stuffed shrimp for me and grouper ponchetrain for my husband. Our salad arrived within ten minutes of placing the order. Limp salad greens with a chick of tomato. Balsamic dressing on the side. Then we waited and waited and waited. It took 35 minutes for the entrees. The food was hot and well seasoned. After our meal I had to get up and find the waiter and ask for the check. One waiter for the entire bar creates is not good. We toed the server twenty percent because we know waiters get stiffed by many customers. This was definitely not the special Jim's East from years ago. Maybe next time.

Call me a old school guy. I am easy to please. I have waited tables and bartenders my way through college. When I go out for a holiday celebration with my family I don't ask for much. I just spent $400 on dinner with my family and got my soup before my appetizer, had to ask for a fork for 2 us to eat our entree, go into the kitchen to ask for my table to be pre bussed and for a dessert order to b taken. Really!! The funny thing is it's not my server fault. He had a party of 10,our 5 top, A 4 top and a trainee following him. That is inexcusable from a management stand point!

Yikes. Somebody act fast. The hostess seated our table of 7 with two menus. Then said "we're running low on menus; I'll bring some more when I have them." Dinner was okay...maybe it was just a bad time to come in.

Service was extremely slow. Took an hour and a half to finish since it was at least an hour wait for our food. The restaurant was not even crowded! I will not be returning.

As a business traveller I like to find a local place for dinner versus the chain places. I found Jim's on yelp, it had good reviews and was close to my hotel. What a find! The atmosphere, food, and service were superb! Little on the upscale side which is right down my alley. Even the cliental was great ! I will revisit on my next trip to Memphis!

I just tried Jim's Place for the first time for lunch. It was more of a business meeting, and this place was the perfect atmosphere for such an occasion. I tried one of the specials, Fish Tacos, and they were delicious. The bread that they gave you as you were waiting was good. They brought two kinds of bread, one being corn bread. I only ate the corn bread (not sure why I didn't try the other) and it was very good. The Fish Tacos were tilapia with a creamy cajun sauce. They came with more on them but this is all that I wanted. I ordered this with creamy potatoes on the side (they not creamy at all). Although the Fish Tacos were great, they could have had a little more flavor to them. The waiter could have been better and acted a little strange, but all in all it was good service. I heard they have a good happy hour and from checking out the bar area, I can see why. I definitely plan on seeing what that is all about soon. I would recommend this spot.

Ok. First off they have diner style wood seats that are crazy uncomfortable. Asked for a different type of chair from the other dining area it was much better. The iceberg wedge salad and Caesar salads were delicious. The filet came out wrapped in bacon. The menu did not mention bacon. When I asked for a new filet without bacon the waiter said all are already prepared that way. Then I asked for the manager who was very nice. I wouldn't return though- only for the cost there are better more comfortable places to go to. But if you only want great salad it is good.

I recently went to Jim's Place for a group dinner and I was really pleased with the atmosphere, service, and food. We got here at 6:30 on Wednesday and the place was bustling with professionals of all ages. The atmosphere reminded me of a traditional New York Steakhouse with the wood detailing, dark lighting and cozy booths. The service was attentive and timely. We let our waitress pick the appetizers and she didn't disappoint. We had the charbroiled shrimp, phyllo puffs, crab stuffed mushrooms, and souflima. The latter was my favorite--it's an original family recipe of slow cooked pork tenderloin. They have an entree version which I'm sure is very good too. I had the Scallops for dinner and they were cooked perfectly. They come 5 to a plate with a choice of two sides and I was pretty full afterwards. Overall, a very good experience.

My husband and I went to Jim's Place for lunch yesterday. While there were lots of tables available in the dining room, we were seated in the bar area ten feet from the restroom entrance. The lighting there is fluorescent, so it made me think of a cafeteria instead of an upscale restaurant. We were seated at a banquette-style two-top between an older couple who spent the time with the husband talking loudly on his cellphone, and two older men on the other side of us who spent the whole time talking politics, also loudly. Our waiter was not available in a timely way to us, and it took over 45 minutes from the time we ordered to get our lunch. The dressing on my salad was balsamic vinagrette, which was so sweet I could have put it over ice cream. I sent it back. My chicken breast was undercooked and quite pink in the middle, and the turnip greens were also very sweet and not "cooked down" very well. My husband ordered a cheeseburger, and when he was asked how he wanted it prepared, he said medium. It was more than well-done (it was crumbly) when it came. When I pointed out to the waiter that my chicken was undercooked, he said he would tell the cook, but then he didn't comp me for the meal. We will not be going back to Jim's Place.

This is an odd place, and by odd, I mean unusual, not bad. Jim's really doesn't know what it wants to be. Neighborhood pub? Upscale eatery? Night club? It's all three, depending on your own perception. Unfortunately, those 3 don't really mesh for me... went there for a business dinner, and couldn't even get into the bar for an pre-meal cocktail, it was so packed. And the clientele in the bar was almost all over-55! Not that I'm an ageist, it was just... weird. The menu was very broad and the drinks at the table were good, but the service was just OK. Likewise on the food... I ordered the ribeye medium-rare at the waitress's recommendation, and it came out overcooked. Tasty, but it would have been better had it been the way I'd ordered. Sides were good. Wine selection was kind of weak, at least for the reds. It was strictly lower-tier wines by the glass priced between $7-12. The only really decent selections were $75/bottle and up. The rest of the people at my table seemed to enjoy their meals, and for that Jim's gets 3 stars. Had it just been me, we'd probably be talking 2 stars. I not in a big hurry to go back there.

Wow. What a total Bummer that another restaurant can't keep the quality up when transitioning from generation to generation. (Think Pete and Sam's, etc) I almost don't want to write a big this was wrong and this was wrong but I guess If I'm going to leave a poor review I should. Smelled like a combination of fishy and dirty bathroom.( the bathroom was gross) Greek salad came in a HOT bowl which made my salad hot. Very poor example of a Greek salad on top of it. The phyllo puffs were very good as usual and was pretty much the good thing of the dinner. The gumbo had way too much cinnamon and was fishy tasting. Gross. The waiter nicely changed it for the later mentioned cold broccoli. The suflima was dry and way over salted and pretty much inedible. This was really a bummer as this used to be such a strength of theirs. My mom the salt freak couldn't even eat it. The vegetable of the day was broccoli with a hollandaise sauce. At least that's what they said. Cold, raw and a little bit of a weird yellowish sauce at the bottom of the bowl. Prime rib was OK but undercooked (hard for me to get undercooked meat). The waiter was good and service was good but as I've said I'd rather have marginal service and good food. I am so upset that after literally a lifetime of coming to Jim's Place I think it's over. It sucks enough spending money on a sub par meal but especially when it could be so good. Sad.

One of my favorite places to eat. Never had a bad meal or poor service. A great place to send a special night for birthdays or anniversary! I love the veal cutlet and pork dishes especially. Best of all is that the prices are very reasonable. I do miss to old location but understand the need for a change in location.

Easter brunch with a large party (13) of family. This was our first time at the new location and we have fond memories of the old place on Shelby Oaks. The service was excellent and so was the food. I had the pecan-crusted catfish, which was rich and delicious. Others in our party enjoyed the shrimp and grits and Jim had the soufflima, with tender pork over rice with a Greek tomato sauce. He loved the dish. The atmosphere is bright and attractive, with a nice-looking bar. Great place Easter brunch - we'll probably be back for dinner sometime!

I really liked this place; was the first time I had tried this location. We stopped in during happy hour and just had an appetizer... the souflima potato skins they were the bomb. The bartender Mo was super friendly and knew a lot about the menu. We will be going back!!

Not in downtown Memphis, but the best food we had while in town. Steak was perfect, and served exactly as we requested. Also had the scallops and they were sooo good! For dessert had the chocolate cake (very moist and excellent icing!) and the pecan pie, which was more of a chocolate tart but also delicious! Very generous portions, and the very best waitstaff we had during our stay in Memphis!

First of all, the place is just gorgeous, inside and out. It's a little retro, with the wild wallpapers in each room, but it's also beautifully and classically furnished with a mix of antiques, warm wood and wicker. Service is excellent and the food was very, very good. The remoulade is addictive, and I've never had the calamari at Jim's or Jim's Place Grille in Collierville when it hasn't been perfectly cooked. Crisp cornmeal crust, every ring or baby octopi perfectly tender. It's never rubbery, and the fried green tomatoes that come with the generous serving are a nice touch. The remoulade is made in-house, as everything at Jim's is. All dressings are made, not purchased; the bread is baked daily and leftovers turn into those delicious and very crisp toasts served predinner. You know, the ones that were so crunchy that you couldn't hear me when you were eating them? And the meat is hand cut. I'm saying it loud: The New York strip I ate for dinner was one of the best steaks I've eaten. It was perfectly cooked. Nice crisp pieces along the tiny strip of fat down the side, beautifully charred, cooked to medium rare as requested and bursting with flavor. I'd put it up against any steak in town. The strip, a groan-inducing 16 ounces, came with two sides and cost $30. I went with the standard -- blue cheese over an iceberg wedge and tomatoes -- and the scalloped corn, but I could've chosen a baked potato and gone totally steakhouse. I thought the meal was very good -- though the turnip greens, which were touted by Gregory (and others) were gritty and the corn was not especially flavorful. The menu is large and includes Greek selections such as mousaka and several steak selections. My recommendation is to go with a steak, and don't miss the calamari. Jennifer Biggs' Review - 3 out of 4 stars

Horrible service. From the time I walked in the door [they didn't have my reservation, even after having to spell my name for them], wanted my wine order before I even had a chance to look at the wine list [almost as if they were in a hurry], NEVER brought the appetizer I ordered & it kept going down hill from there. Will never go back.

We were at Jim's place for lunch. Service was fine, except the waiter did not serve our fish prepared as we had requested. Rather than grilled, it was swimming in butter. I didn't realize it until we had left and I looked up the menu online. The food is okay but not particularly memorable. I had tilapia (again, swimming in butter) and grilled zucchini, also swimming in butter because it was served on the same place. Not sure I'll go back.

I think I speak for my entire party of 12 saying this place was fantastic. I am still in awe of the fact that a nice restaurant serves liver. I was in heaven with liver paired with delicious italian spinach and southern turnip greens. Take me back to country cooking already. I will go back.

When I think of Jim's Place East, I remember all the many special events I've attended here over the years. The beautiful and elegant atmosphere, plus the incredible food ,makes it a perfect place to celebrate. Owned and operated by the Taras family, Jim's Place has been in business since 1921. That should tell you a lot. For a restaurant to make it that long, you know it has to be special. And Jim's Place most certainly is. Let me start with the food. The steaks are incredible, perfectly seasoned and prepared, and are so tender you can almost cut them with a fork. Not kidding, folks. But what I am insane about at Jim's Place is the Chilean Sea Bass. It's crusted with pistachios and a delicious mustard sauce. Love it! Owned by Greeks, there are also find some classic Greek fare on the menu as well. My personal favorite is their Mousaka. It's absolutely fantastic. And for dessert - don't pass up the Caramel Fudge Pecan Pie. It's so worth the calorie splurge.

I don't know why this place is rated with just $$. Everything on the menus except the burger is at least $30. It was good food, but not that good for the money.

What's not to love about Jim's Place East!! This was THE special occasion place when I was growing up. We went here for my grandmother's birthday (she loved the oysters) Mother's Day and before school dances. It was just where we went back then. The atmosphere is great- set off Summer Ave in a home like setting with gardens and various rooms inside of the restaurant. It's a great place for groups and parties and business lunches. The Ribeye, and Veal are my favorite here.

Excellent food and service. Great atmosphere that's a nice place to spend with friends, family or on a date. Very classy place and service with a smile. The Souflima was fantastic. Their seafood gumbo has a very slight sweet taste with a little kick. I will definately go back to try one of their steaks which are rated highly by the Memphis Commercial Appeal newspaper.

Can't say enough about this place! The atmosphere is sophisticated, the food is the bomb, and the the service is exceptional! Shawn, our server is nothing short of amazing! The drinks are excellent! We have been back about 8 times and tried about half of the menu, and have yet to eat anything that wasn't delicious! Try the fried oysters...they are the bomb! The prime rib sandwich is to die for, and every fish dish was out of this world! This is THE PLACE! Ambience and Yum! FOrget Restaurant IRIS and Erling Jensens..this is the place to go to!

I didn't really know what to expect from this place and was pleasantly surprised. I had heard about it for years and was probably the only person that has lived in Memphis as long as I have that hasn't been here. I was concerned at first by the retro feel of the place and the fact that the avarage age of the diners was around 85. Granted we had a 7pm reservation so the early birds were still finishing up. All fears were put to rest though by the friendly service, stiff drinks, and interesting, varied menu that features both steakhouse staples, as well as some interesting Greek specialties. Most of my party had steaks, both a thick cut ribeye and a crab topped filet. I went with the pan fried veal and couldn't have been happier. It was delicious and all the food got rave reviews around the table. Next time I'll go for the Moussaka or something a little more adventurous but based on the delicious food, I'll definitely be back.

I agree that Jim's is better than average when it comes to elegant dining, I stop just short of the 5 star rating though. The food has been consistently very good and the service has been consistently among the better places I have been. The steaks are cooked the way I ask, well-marbled and my wife enjoyed her salmon. The side dishes were good if not quite exceptional. Dessert was the same in that nothing really stood out as exceptional. I go there for a fine dining experience and come away feeling well-fed and satisfied,

We decided to take advantage of the cooler temps today and dine outside. Jim's Place East is so wonderful. The calamari served with fried green tomatoes and remoulade sauce is delicious. I took advantage of the special today, which was low country shrimp and crawfish atop of creamy grits. For sides, I had salad and gumbo. The gumbo was good, but interesting. It had cinnamon in it.....which reflects the Greek influence, but is definitely not traditional. My date had the steak and creamed potatoes. Both were very well executed. The patio was gorgeous and I loved the clear lights strung on the shrubbery. I think my date said it best: it was very much like The Ivy in LA.
