This is a review only on the trio salad. And it's awesome! The candied pecans and the huge chunks of Brie set my heart a flutter every single time. I love that salad. It's seriously worth going in. I've actually had it delivered a few times too. I have been to this restaurant about a dozen times, and that's seriously the only thing I've ever ordered. I might should branch out. Probably not though.

This place was just OK. The food was definitely good but there was a lot of other things that made me feel like three stars was the best I could do. Maybe 3.5! First, they made us pay in advance for our food because we were sitting on the patio. I guess they do that as a precaution against people dining and dashing but it was a really interesting way to start the meal and essentially a way to tell us that they didn't trust us. Second, we had to go in and get our own coffee, which was weird enough, but then two of the canisters were empty and the other one that had coffee in it was cold. Along the same drink vein, we ordered orange juice and that came in little tiny premade plastic sippy type cups which wasn't great since we were dining in. Finally, and I'm assuming this is because we already paid for food, the waitress literally never came back to our table to check on us. We had to steal silverware and condiments from the table next to us. Not a great first experience but I wouldn't be opposed to trying it again.

Just go in and enjoy. It's a different vibe, cafeteria style with good food at a great price. Evan was very friendly. Try the chicken pot pie.

Gotta love when they greet you at the door Advertising pancakes and brunch and after waiting in a LONG line they can't even hook your kid up with some pancakes....RIDICULOUS...will not be back. So many better options on the square. Now I know why this one had the least wait.

Good prices, great food. Fish seasoning was a little bit salty but it may be just me, I don't use to much salt when I cook. Drinks were refreshingly good and well priced. Staff was friendly but a little slow to get to me and I sat at the bar.

Not my best first experience in a new city. Sure, I could have read a bunch of reviews before picking a place but once in a while I like to walk around, embrace what is around me, and go with a gut feeling. Lesson learned. Service, if there's much of anything was fine. It's set up like a sit down and receive some service restaurant, it feels as such, but it's a go ahead and help yourself to a drink at our drink station setup. It didn't have the fast food feel so getting my own drink and refills was different. Anyway, I ordered the buffalo chicken wrap along with broccoli and cheese soup. The soup arrived first... Unfortunately, there wasn't much pizzaz in the taste of this. It wasn't a terrible taste, it simply lacked a fresh taste. As for my chicken wrap, it tasted the same. The sauce was excellent. The chicken was tender. The wrap was lacking and it's the first thing I could taste. There were nice people working in the place. The food, however, left a little more to be desired.

It's been two years since my Trio review, and I new remodel is a great reason to write again. I like Trio, but I'll admit it's one of the downtown restaurants I visit the least. Today I was surprised to find the previous counter setup no longer exists and now the restaurant is all table service. I wasn't the only one surprised because the servers had to explain the new format to every customer. What's important is the food is still really good and the service is still quick and friendly. Trio cut the long line and you now walk in and find a table. You can also walk directly to the drink fountain and pour your glass. Once you place your order and get your drink you are able to pay immediately with the server through a mobile platform. It''s all pretty slick, but frequent customers will probably be confused. The remodel also includes a bar with TVs and a few items on draft. They are still cleaning everything up, but this improvement looks to be a welcomed one.

We came here for a quick brunch while traveling, and it was over all disappointing. The place was packed but the staff were not prepared for the crowd. They ran out of coffee mugs and creamer, they seated us without silverware, and they did not get my wife's order correct. This place is probably much better for lunch rather than brunch.

Prices were a bit high for lunch, but there's plenty of options. It's interesting service. You get your drink first then find a seat & wait on a server.

Our waitress was very nice and helpful. Once entering Trio you get your own drink and then pick your own table. We ordered the fried ribs for appetizer and it was very yummy. We love Trio because of the kid friendly menu. We also ordered from the sunset bar and were told the specials. Which was $5 pitcher, but we opted for something else, but thought it was a good deal. One thing is bring tip in cash, because you can't add it to the bill. But overall we both loved the food and when we visit Knoxville again we will becoming back!

If you're looking for a good Benedict, this is where it's at! It's in the heart of market square. It's convenient and it's cheap! I would expect it to be more expensive because of the quality of food is great. I highly recommend it! We had a bad service though.. I'm hoping it was just us.

Cool place to grab a quick bite! We were looking for lunch before the game and wandered up to Market Square. At first glance the most appealing thing about this cafe was it was less busy than other restaurants and we could actually get a table. The menu is on the wall with a variety of items to fit anyone's taste. Once you decide what you are eating, you step up to the cashier and order. The cashier gives you a number and you find a table and put the number on the table. Your food is brought to your table once its ready. Everything is prepared as its ordered so its fresh. I love that. I ordered the southwestern baked potato and loved every bite. It was a medium sized potato topped with pulled chicken, black bean-corn salsa, and cheddar-jack cheese. The staff and service were wonderful. The new guy working the cashier was very friendly. This is a don't miss lunch spot if you wander down to Market Square.

Looks cool from the outside..but they need to work out their kinks with "serve your own drinks"..wanted coffee but there were no mugs..after washing some they still had food and debris in them..If they are attempting to be "green" then get rid of the styrofoam cups... Had brunch and I chose the French toast..if you like sugary coffee cake then it's all you but it was horrible The E'zza (quiche pot pie) was good G/f had the bacon and caramelized onion one Wasn't very clean but they played decent music..won't ever come back

I order salads here all the time. Their menu is designed to mix & match but the best part is their drink specials. They probably have the best priced alcohol on market square. I never think about drinking here but they have $5 pitchers. Their unsweet flavored tea is wonderful too (clearly I mix it with some sweet but it's really the best of both worlds.) The only real downside is their lettuce quality to price ratio, the lettuce could be more fresh. The staff is always great.

They have the Sunset Bar now and it makes the place look a bit smaller. If you wish to order something to go then head straight for the bar and they'll get your order there. They now have hand-held devices were you can pay your server right at the table. Football time! If you are going with a ton of people or for football time with the family be prepared for a crowd near those tvs. I still really like their food! I was checked on lot at my table. I believe that means that your server actually cares about you :) You can also order online if you choose. I believe they still allow dogs on the deck as well.

While exploring through the market place of Knoxville while at a conference, my friends and I stumbled upon this amazing cafe! Being visitors of the area, we weren't sure what to expect, but the employees were friendly, the prices were decent, and the food was delicious! The only problem is group tabling can be a little bit of a struggle since the restaurant is "seat yourself". Otherwise you are sure to enjoy a great meal here!

Service was great. They kept coming to table to see how was doing but not so much we could not enjoy the food. The food was very tasty. Staff made you feel at home. already trying figure out when coming back

Expensive for pretty average food tbh. Got a salad that was bad then got another one that was worse. Looked like the shit I got in a high school cafeteria. Used to get the turkey avo panini a couple years ago but recently went back and got it again and they've cut down their portion size and increased their prices. Messed up my order twice then gave me the wrong food and gave me a shit about asking for my money back. The owner is kinda a dick. #

I had the pan seared chicken with mashed potatoes and broccoli! Best hot meal I have had in a long time! Pretzels with dip, yes please! Slow roasted pulled turkey club! Best turkey since Thanksgiving! Friendly staff too!

There is no point in going to Trio. They simply refuse to take your order! I've been 3 times since they changed their ordering "system". The first time I waited forever for someone to take my order, and finally left in disgust. The second time I waited 22 minutes for someone to take my order (I timed it because of my first experience). Today I foolishly tried again. It took 17 minutes for them to take my order. I had the pulled turkey sandwich, which was good. The price was high though ($13 for a sandwich and an iced tea). But the food cannot make up for the appalling service. It's no surprise that the restaurant was half empty during the lunch hour. Clearly the word is out about Trio.

Had the turkey avocado salad. Nice big salad with fresh ingredients. Sliced avocado, bacon bits and a spicy ranch dressing. Above average except for the turkey, which I think was lunch meat. A bit pricey for what you get. My salad was $9.50. A little much for a fast food environment.

I've only ever done carryout at off peak times during the day, but SO GOOD. The pot pie will never fail to make me fall in love all over again...with pot pie. The service is always speedy and courteous. Very nice guys who work behind the bar.

It's been a while since I've had a lunch experience punctuated by such a resounding "meh." The greek salad we got for the table was supposedly dressed in a vinaigrette but had no acidity to speak of. The turkey avocado ranch wrap, which should be a bulletproof choice, managed to be boring and one note despite being full of fresh ingredients. There was no heat in the "chipotle ranch" and I could not find any avocado anywhere. Another person had the shrimp and grits, which ended up being a salt bomb. Finally, the bbq pork sandwich was a saving grace--moist with pretty good flavor, but a bit less saucy and messy than your typical barbecue.

Horrible customer service the last time I visited I waited 40 min. on a salad to find out the order never got placed so I left. I tried again to give them a 2nd chance & after waiting 25 min. nobody ever came to take my order and it was a super slow day in there. I left and do not plan on ever trying this place again.

Black Forest panini was salty and too much mayo ( allegedly aoli) over priced, staff were excellent, very friendly.

  • Jennifer H.

Horrible experience. Will never go back. Two of our party ordered pot pies, only one was served and when we asked about it the manager, RENEE, promptly told us that the reason we did not receive the second pot pie was because we only ordered one and that he had eaten it and didn't pay for it! Seriously? Receipt was produced that proved pot pie was paid for. RENEE refused to acknowledge the mistake, did not apologize and got indignant and called the police. Receipt was produced. RENEE should be fired. I would definitely ask if she's there before venturing into the restaurant. Drama Queen.

OMG.... Love. I had one of the greatest burgers of my life here. It was a patty melt burger. Perfectly cooked and everything was fresh. The atmosphere was inviting and the staff is great. I am coming back on my next visit.

Decent veggie panini and fruit salad. I like this place because they are on my list of delivery places in my Grub Hub app. The deliver food for UT Knoxville is usually relegated to crappy places on The Strip and I'm happy to find a decent eatery from Market Square. It would be awesome if places on Gay Street started to do delivery but until then this is my go-to place for UT Knoxville delivery.

There was a varied selection of burgers sandwiches and salads, but cleanliness of the staff, the beverage area and tables was not good, at all. At least two of the staff members were rude, moved so slowly, and one ate right in front of the door with stuff all over his face. He also spoke poorly of a guest right in front of me. I had a turkey panini which was greasy and salty. The four kettle chips I got with my sandwich was thrown on the dirty plate. If I wasn't so hungry and in a rush, I would've left. Two stars are for the very pleasant woman who took my order and the other staff which I overheard being helpful to other guests.

My meal was average. Eggs were on the runny side, bacon was great, biscuit was average. They only had non dairy creamer which is just not cool. The service was fast and friendly. I would be open to trying it again.

Absolutely awesome. Great food, prices, service. Unique menu that includes made to order salads that are the best anywhere. Before you spend more elsewhere in the map, drop by Trio.

I love salads, soups, and sandwiches so a friend and I decided to eat at Trio last night. I had a house salad, a bowl of broccoli and cheese soup, and a turkey sandwich. I also ate half of an apple danish. Within 5 minutes after we left the restaurant, my stomach started rolling, and I had to find a bathroom. I had to take an Immodium AD when I got back to my hotel room. Never again.

Ordered our food to go. It came out in pieces despite being on one order. After 20 minutes and with only one entree in hand (and after asking about the second entree with no action) I went to the counter for a refund since my little one couldn't wait any longer. They graciously refunded my money AND immediately made the salad for me to take with me. They said it would be a training experience.

I don't get the hype. Maybe it's because I'm not a salad person. But aside from the salads, I wasn't impressed the with menu. I can make everything at home. I went with a chili-cheese burger. The beef patty appeared packaged having really defined edges, same rubbery texture throughout. I didn't taste the chili and cheese because there was hardly any on it. The bun seemed lower end, too-dried out and flaking edges. The fries, what there was of them, were school cafeteria fries. Honestly, I thought it sucked. I can get a better burger at Copper Cellar for $5 every Weds. Also, I realize a lot of people ask for water cups and fill them with soda. But I actually do fill mine with water and I don't like paying $.39 for it. That's a greedy owner if you ask me. The only things saving it were the inviting dining room and friendly staff. There are better places nearby in the same price range.

I was greeted by a friendly host, nothing short of your typical southern charm. After reading the menu I needed assistance in deciding between the barbecue pulled turkey sandwich or the smoked Applewood bacon club. The two men upfront both agreed on the club with a side of the house made barbecue sauce. I was sold. Upon returning to my hotel I was disappointed to discover I was missing my side of sauce. Fortunately the turkey was tender and moist, cooked to perfection if I may say and really did need the sauce; the mayo, tomato and lettuce was complimentary enough. The broccoli cheddar soup I subbed for chips was deliscious. Chucks of broccoli added a nice texture to it and unlike most broccoli cheddar soups the cheese did not over power the flavor of the broccoli. Overall a very satisfying meal although a tad bit pricey. My bill was $12.69 not including a drink. Although a college student on a budget I will admit I plan to go back for another cup of soup and to try the barbecue sauce the two host talked up before I leave Sunday.

Ate here for breakfast and it was great. I enjoyed one of their little 'egg pizza' things, which was a lot like a quiche but cooked with the extras on top instead of in the egg. The price was great! No complaints on service, I came in right before breakfast was about to end and had no issues getting what I wanted. I enjoyed a nice mango iced tea which tasted fresh without any artificial flavoring. I would definitely suggest this restaurant!

Why are people hating on this place so hard!? Pretend you want to make a gourmet salad, but you live alone and you buy all the ingredients that you want to, which is expensive, and half of them go bad because you chose not to buy that produce vacuum sealer you saw advertised in late night infomercials. Or, like in my case, you are in from out of town and don't have access to a car, kitchen, or grocery store. YOU GO TO THIS PLACE! The build your own salad bar is a thing of genius. For 6.49, you can get a salad with your choice of lettuce mix, dressing, and 6 ingredients (minus chicken, fish, beef, which make it significantly more money). There are a standard set of ingredients and a daily special ingredient. I got a salad with kidney beans, tomatoes, wontons, cucumbers, celery and the special ingredient: FRESH DATES. It was so delicious!

There are so many better options on Market Square for a similar price. The burger was dry and the oven-baked french fries were horrible. Barely browned, mushy, and several were actually still hard (raw? frozen?) in the middle. We both ordered the same beer and the cashier didn't even tell us that a pitcher was available for a much better deal. We were there at 7 pm on a Thurdsay night and they were deserted except for a couple of patio tables; now I know why. The place definitely has potential (location, décor, menu), but in its current state, it's pretty underwhelming.

Would put zero stars if possible. Our party of 16 was looking for a place to eat and this was the only place in the market square that was empty and we probably found out why. We all had ordered and we had a missing pot pie and the person in our party complained that their order never came. Well the female mgr who will remain nameless came to the table with guns a blazing and raised voice telling us that we complained about the order and the reason we didnt get the order was because someone that had not paid for it on our table had eaten it. Well there were only two ordered and we both had them on our reciepts. Went to show the so callled mgr my receipt and she was spitefull as ever and told her we did not appreciate being accused of stealing anything. it escalated and somethings were said and police called by her becuse she heard me call her a name that I did not call to her face or say out loud but she overheard and made it seem that I yelled it out . . All this because of a Power Hungry Young Lady whom could not admit they made a mistake and the only one causing a scene and raising their voices was her. Even one of the employees there whom had helped us apologized over and over again . I do not wish for this person to lose their job but get help. Get help in dealing with issues and its not a bad thing to admit a mistake was made and to apologize when you wrongfully accuse someone of stealing. The sad thing is due to this one person our outing with our baseball team was ruined. The other sad thing is the food is actually pretty good here and would have come back again but cannot recommend .

Trio is okay, when they try. I've been a few times, but the quality of the food seems a bit variable. I think it depends on who is working at the time. It is a little over-priced and for that I'd expect at least some consistency. When they hit on all cylinders, Trio's not bad. The fries are pretty good (a little sweet and soft, much like oven-baked fries) and the bread for sandwiches is high quality. It's a cute little place with a nice location. During my visit this week, everything was burnt and the flavor didn't come out. They bread they use is a bit higher quality than most burger joints, but was a little stale that time and the burger and bacon were both over-cooked. At this point, I'm writing the place off. There are a number of great places in the Market Square area; I don't plan to gamble again on whether the meal at Trio will be good or mediocre.

We ate dinner twice at Trio Cafe during our stay in Knoxville. Both times we were very very happy with the food and service. The prices are reasonable for the quality and size of the servings. I rate Trio as 30% better (taste and value) compared to Panera in California (I didn't go to Panera in TN). The Trio salads are sophisticated and healthy. In fact, I thought the taco salad here was the best I've ever eaten, and that's comparing it to a lot of taco salads in California. Wifi worked great so we were able to stream an MLS soccer game on our iPad while eating. We really liked this place.

Great food. Great service. Love the new beer-on-tap selection! Been going for 2+ years and things just keep getting better! You gotta try the November All Year!!!

  • R B.

Good food. Odd service. We walked in and stood there waiting to be seated. And waited. And waited. Finally, I tackled some server walking by (blinders, I guess, he couldn't see us?) Found out the deal is you have to walk through the restaurant, order at a counter, then they bring you the food. No where was this anywhere apparent. So again, i was really disappointed in the service. But the food was good -- chicken pot pie, and I had the November Anytime which was a delish roasted turkey and dressing dinner. I thought it was a cute place inside, and the food was fine. Just know that's it's semi-self serve.

Big portions, good prices. Amazing salads, tons of toppings. Wonderful menu, good amount of choices. Fresh ingredients, tasty foods. Best patio on Market Square, nice views. Uplifting decor, always clean. Nice baked goods, too. Those are the facts of Trio Cafe. Sure, the food isn't out of this world good, but you should definitely try it. The best thing on their menu? November all Year. Nothing like it in Knoxville:)

We stopped by here for lunch while on a road trip to New Orleans, and were pleasantly surprised by the turkey breast sandwich. They used real turkey breast meat and thick slices of bacon that paired very well together.

This is one of my favorite Market Square spots. It's delicious, well priced, and consistent. On a Friday night after a long day at work, I couldn't ask for better. They also have a decent bottled beer selection and about 4 beers on draft, but they're always good. You can buy pitchers to split as well, plus they have great priced bottles of wine. Those BBQ Turkey Nachos could be the answer to world peace.

I've been to trio a couple of times for both lunch and dinner and was always very pleased. The burgers are pretty good and priced well considering the toppings. I had a burger with sprouts and avocado and it wasn't just a sliver of avocado. I think the burgers are half price on Fridays. Usually I get the vegetable panini which I highly recommend. It has a variety of roasted veggies with cheese and I think a pesto aoli on a great bread. I've never tried their salads but I've herad they're pretty good as well.

I love this place! a few months a go, In the mornings I take my breakfast there and enjoy my blueberry flapjacks, I totally recommend! I'm kind of boring because I always ask the same dish...but it's so yummy and the prices are a little overpriced. If you want healthy food , I don't think this is the place, definitely this not a healthy place to eat, everything have 300 calories per bite .

One of my favorite places to eat on Market Square in downtown Knoxville. Portions are very generous and the quality of the food is what I'd expect at a higher-end restaraunt not a cafe. My favorite is by far the Turkey Avo (avocado) sandwich and of course Orange Crush to drink.

Artsy fare, to a degree. Counter service, McAlister's-style, but in a family-run environment. Food seemed fresh, salads were decent. Sandwiches were decent...it's one of those situations where you want to support local business, and the food was OK, but I've nearly forgotten what I had (this afternoon).

Let me preface this by saying, we are generally pretty easy to please - it is unusual for me to give a negative review of somewhere - that said... We love dining on Market Square, and were excited to try Trio tonight for a quick meal before a show at the TN Theater. We had our two toddlers with us, and because we were eating early, ordered two burgers to share with everyone. The two burgers, an extra side of fruit and 2 drinks came to just under $30. At that price, I was pretty excited to get my "hand pattied, gourmet burgers." Imagine our surprise when 2 lukewarm burgers that had a factory given shape (including flat edges) arrived. We had ordered the "3 cheese" burger and it included an unmelted slice of cheese, as well as unmelted shredded cheese. It truly appeared that they had gotten burgers from Sam's Club, heated them in the microwave during lunch, and then served them to us at 5pm. They also forgot one of our orders of fries, and when they brought out the order, they were not fully cooked. The meal was honestly so bad, that between my husband, myself and my 3 yr old and 2 yr old, we left a full plate of fries and the equivalent of one and a half full burgers on our plate. We would have let the staff know about our disappointment in the meal, but we never had a member of the staff visit our table after they dropped our food off. I would say, there are plenty of other great restaurants on Market Square to try. This may have been an off night, but we won't be back to find out.

Ugh. Can I just say that? Not helpful? Fine. It sucked. Only remotely healthy thing on the menu--pick-your-toppings salads. Meh. Seen that before. And if you don't see the fat free dressings it's because they're not there. Ask to eliminate some sauces and stuff so as to make my meal (you know, something other than a salad) a little healthier, and you'll be met with some serious disdain. The one sauce I did get (some mustard something or other) was moved aside given that I couldn't taste it anyway (why waste calories on cardboard???). Espresso tasted no more than a small cup of coffee. And yes, you'll be charged extra for that tiny cup of...essentially...coffee. Very disappointed. Though I live only blocks from Market Square, and will be spending loads of time there, I will not be visiting Trio again. Bleh. UPDATE: I had to go here for lunch the other day with colleagues. Had a salad. It was decent. Still meh...

I was recently in Knoxville on business and someone recommended Trio for lunch. I immediately felt at home as I walked in and was greeted by fresh ingredients at the salad prep bar to my left and a tasty-looking menu on the wall to my right. Everything from breakfast to hand crafted burgers looked good, but on this day I happened to be in the mood for a salad (which is rare). I got the Asian chicken salad and was pleasantly surprised when they brought it to my table. I expected it to be fresh, but it tasted better than fresh, with not too much dressing, which I was really impressed with (just the right amount!) My lunch partner got the chicken pot pit which looked and tasted delicious (I had to finish her's off because it was such a big portion). Overall we had a very pleasant experience and wish that Trio cafe would come to Greenville! I will definitely be back next time I'm in Knoxville!

ok so i popped into trio yesterday on one of my many random trips to knoxville for whatever reason i might be there... my original plan was go to a movie then go over to the downtown brewery. however upon entering DB they said the wait would be about 30 mins and that they were understaffed... sooooo my companions and i decided we would walk over to market square see what was up there... it was sunday, Valentines day. so a few of the places were closed. which i thought was just dumb. any opportunity to make money one should take.. anyway so we wondered into trio. the menu here is pretty decent.. its deff not a place i would find myself going to if i were looking for something super filling. i would say its more a lunch place... they have salads, sandwiches, stuffed baked potatoes, paninis, and soup.. a couple larger entrees but i dont recall most of them. Yes people on here are a bit rite about this place some of there food did appear to be slightly over priced for what it was. but i think when u make something fresh with good quality ingredients its bound to cost money. and they have to make a profit.. so dont hate on them. u can always go to Mickie D's. the service here was very polite. seemed to be run by mostly women.. the atmosphere was that much of most lil sandwich shops. very minimalist with quite a few pieces of artwork on the walls.. which BTW i thought was awesome because all the pictures were of there own food. now on to the food.. from everyone at my table we all enjoyed it very much.. i guess when it comes to places like that u just have to know what to order. i myself got the stuffed baked potato... it was the chicken pot pie one... and WOW was it yummy. was only about 5 bux. but it was a huge potato. far larger than most i have seen. it was delicious and filling. Im a big guy. so if it was filling for me im sure it would satisfy most any ones hunger at lunchtime. wish i had snapped a shot of the food but i was to hungry and devoured my food before i remembered. all around i liked this place a lot.. i thought they had diff ideas on things one could have and also put a spin on a few of the normal things. i would deff go back here to grab a bite around lunchtime when and if i am in knox again. i say hey give it a shot and check it out. its good food.

Nice lunch foods and combos, and really great salads. I really enjoy their scones (particularly the blueberry and cinnamon sugar.) They always have a nice variety of baked goods in the case any time of day.

Great location...mediocre food. Definite sense of "I wish I was trendy but dang it I'm just cheap". We tried a couple of their signature dishes and were disappointed all around...can't vouch for their breakfast or panini's though.
