Might have given it 5 had the table we were waiting on not been handed out to folks who came in after us. But then again, they were regulars, and we weren't. And I appreciate the loyalty. The table we did get had been occupied by an very old lady who slipped as she got up. The waitress caught her head before it hit the floor. That's the kind of service you can expect at Rankin. Good blue plate specials. Delicious gravy on the chicken and dumplings...just like grandmama used to work for days to create. Nice pancake. Spongy yet crisp on the edges. Super low prices. Definitely beats any chain you might be tempted by.

This place is definitely greasy as all get out. I had a grilled cheese and a cup of soup and I nearly used two napkins. It is good but it is a dive and is extremely cheap so just to let you know keep that in mind if you go there. It reminds me of Long's Drugstore because of its greasiness. This place was packed and we had to wait like 5 minutes for a table.

The food was great and so was the service. This will become a regular place for my husband and I to eat at.

When you go to Rankin, you get a glimpse at what Knoxville was like before the chichi restaurants and boutiques came to Market Square. Supposedly Knoxville's oldest restaurant, Rankin's menu features typical Southern diner fare at very reasonable prices. The servers are friendly and the food comes out quickly, making it a good choice if you are pressed for time. I typically order over easy eggs with biscuits and gravy, which are always cooked well. The biscuits are like my Mamaw's, floury and fluffy. If you prefer a more buttery biscuit, they will not be your favorite. Their breakfast potatoes are a must if you have a big appetite. The potatoes are cut into larger chunks than the hash browns at most places, making them a perfect balance of crisp and soft textures. As other reviewers have mentioned, they take cash only. Rankin is a great option if you want a simple meal like your Mamaw made. It is solidly good diner food.

One of the best greasy spoons in Knoxville, by far. You'll be hard pressed to spend $5 on your breakfast, and the food is amazing. This place is the real thing. A slice of authentic, good, old fashioned southern hospitality. The coffee is colorable and so are the biscuits and gravy and pancakes. One morning we heard one of the waitresses remark to a customer, "Oh, she just quit smoking yesterday. She's mean as *two* snakes." I love this place and so will you. Be aware that the omlettes come with biscuits and gravy. Come early on Saturday or you'll end up waiting. Closed on Sunday cause of church, of course. Enjoy!

I finally had the opportunity to eat here after driving past it multiple times a week for months. I went with a friend for a hearty old timer's breakfast, expecting a more home-y version of Waffle House. My friend and I went around 10-11am on Saturday and were the youngest people there by at least 30 years. It wasn't crowded but definitely had a bustle. It is cash only, which as a first timer I didn't realize until we were checking out at the register. The cashier was nice enough to point out the nearest ATM (down the block in the super wash house). I honestly expected more out of the place. Our waitress was friendly, always quick on the coffee refill, but ultimately the food fell flat. My biscuits (with sausage) were tough, dry, and missing any flavor. If the food was priced any higher I would have felt like j was being ripped off for the lack of quality. Maybe driving by this place so often hyped it up in my mind, but I'll be going to Waffle House next time.

A classic diner style restaurant. Great for breakfast... no frills, just large portions and low prices. It feels like the kind of place that has been doing the same thing it's been doing for decades, and I'm just fine with that. I'm pretty well hooked on the massive biscuits and gravy plate.

Breakfast at this place is where it's at. The biscuits and gravy with sausage is fantastic. Lunch is also excellent, but the star meal of the day is the first one. Word of warning, though: everything is cooked to order and fresh (a good thing) so if you are used to Hardees or Waffle Hut you are in for a surprise when you find out what Breakfast is supposed to taste like.

First off, cash only. I was working nearby and didn't realize that until after the meal but my buddy had enough to cover for me. The food was amazing southern Americana "home cooked" diner food. I had the country steak with gravy and three vegetables, green beans, lima beans and fried cabbage.

Atmosphere was fine..I really wanted to like it, but I just didn't. The food wasn't bad, but it was one of those places where you think "I can make this at home better" kind of feeling. Breakfast for two with coffee, 2 eggs, 2 sausage, grits or gravy w/biscuits was $16.

I want to like Rankin . . . but I don't. The food is average for a "meat and 3" place like this. The atmosphere is appealing, in a Mayberry RFD-sort of way. Still, I don't like the way this place makes me feel -- bad, judge-y, Cas Walker vibes in here -- so I never go.

Wow! I must admit that I was expecting that such a historic spot (It is Knoxville's oldest restaurant) would not produce anything worth mentioning. I was completely wrong. My family and I all went here for breakfast a couple of weeks ago and it was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. We all ordered breakfast and it was perfect. I ordered bacon and eggs and they brought out the most delicious, thick, crispy bacon, and perfect scrambled eggs and started us off with some amazing biscuts with jam (boysenberry, in my case - which was perfect). Another of us had the pancakes they were also very tasty. This place is legit! If you can, sit at the counter and just enjoy the show. Come very hungry.

Rankin's has been in business for a long, long time. It's one of those little locally owned neighborhood restaurants that are getting harder and harder to find. I only go at breakfast time because I love having breakfast in a place like this. Plus, the breakfast food is excellent and very reasonably priced. It's a real treat. You should pay these good folks a visit- you'll be glad you did.

After hearing about this restaurant for years, my husband and I decided to try it, What a mistake! . If you think this is homestyle cooking then you either grew up in the city or your taste buds have gone south. The only scratch items we had were the biscuits and mashed potatoes which were fine. Everything else came out of a can including the brown and the white gravy. We each had a country steak entree, the only difference being which of the two gravies you had on the mystery meat. The cornbread tasted like it had been made days before and reheated to a tough, dry blob. If you are looking for an inexpensive place to fill you belly with no regards to taste, this is your place. Otherwise, steer clear.

Just visited last Saturday. My dad owned a greasy spoon my entire life. Rankin brought back a lot of great memories. The food, service, and atmosphere are spot on.

Good biscuits and service, but the eggs in the omelettes I don't believe are real but don't taste bad. Hot chocolate is good.

Great basic Diner and that's a good thing! I ordered the Bacon & Cheese omelet which comes with 2 biscuits and sausage gravy. Great portion and tasty. Strips of bacon in the omelet was a great surprise. The cheese was basic but worked in the grand picture. Biscuits and Gravy were tasty and the biscuits were especially good. This is exactly the type of neighborhood place I wish I had in my neighborhood!

Awesome. This place came as a recommendation while we were waiting for our vehicle to get fixed. It is a local place, in a local part of town. The prices can't be beat. We spent over an hour there on a Thursday and the place was packed the entire time. With burgers at around $3.50, and an unlimited supply of coffee from the awesome waitstaff, I can't recommend any other place in that area.
