My band, out on tour, was told that we would be kicked out and not payed if we played loudly. The "entertainment manager" who was unapologetically telling us this (after we loaded in and set up, less than half an hour before set start time) had no idea he had booked a punk rock band and was un willing to compromise. "We ain't no punk rock club". Apparently "any loud music would make his patrons leave" and he would apparently blame us for this. This is a textbook "cheat a band out of money/gig" play. This was not the promoters fault, it falls on the "entertainment manager" who is bad at his job. He is also like a thousand years old so I'm not surprised he booked a punk rock show and had no idea that he had done so until the bands were about to play. ( Thankfully the promoter handled the situation like a PRO and got us paid for an impromptu "acoustic" thing. ) I also saw the bar manager letting people in through the back door, which of course cheats the bands out of cover money. Not a huge deal but still very unprofessional. Last nail in the coffin- this bar allows smoking indoors so everything reeks of stale smoke and get worse throughout the night. What year is it again? People still smoke inside restaurants?? Gross!

While in Knoxville traveling with a few co-workers, we were enticed to check out Preservation Pub based upon their extensive beer collection. We probably should have gone somewhere else. First, we got there about 6pm on a Wednesday night and were asked to pay cover. No biggie--but we expected to see a live band--where we sat upstairs, we were entertained by one of the bartender's iPods for the evening. Secondly we asked for a food menu and beer list. "It's gone missing, but we have all that," says the server as he signals the taps at the bar. Hmmm. We each gave our beer order and then food--selection included pizza, sandwiches, wraps--typical bar food. He also asked for a credit card to start a tab but would not accept any of our American Express cards. From what I understand, not accepting AE is not a thing anymore. One of us surrendered our personal Visa. Shortly, the server came back to confirm our meals again. Now that i look back on it. I'm pretty sure he was high. So we only drank beers from taps that we could recognize from across the room and munched on sub-par bar food. We had hoped to hear some local flavor as this seemed to be the place to catch a live show. Instead, we heard a ping on the speaker every time the bartender got a text. Unless you have a good, specific reason to go here. Don't wander in. It's a let down.

Third floor is awesome. Ask to try the moonshine! They have so many flavors. Always a decent band playing here.

I'm giving this place 4 stars simply because Of the outdoor venue. The rooftop area during the summer, for those of us without Pools, has water misting units and great music. Also, $2 beers on Sundays. The unfortunate situation here is that they still allow smoking inside, which is odd. In this day and age smoking indoors should be out.

Staff were great , great selection of beer.

My favorite bar in Knoxville. Love the rooftop bar and the vibe of this place.

Great food, cheap drink specials! Cool atmosphere! This is located in the square (artist block) in downtown Knoxville. There are a lot of options around this bar so make your choice wisely. Everything has a artist/boho feel. I felt right at home here. Will totally come back and check other places out when I am in Knoxville. They has a decent beer selection and pretty good pizza. Split the pizza with a friend!

  • Tara T.

Preservation Pub exceeded my expectations. I thoroughly enjoyed the rooftop. The band playing downstairs was really good. They were still going at it at 1:30 when we left. I would've gave it 5 stars if the draft was $3. I seen online it was $2 for local & draft, but Angry Orchard was $4!? Not a huge deal... Overall relaxed environment, different vibes on each floor. Loved it & will return!

  • Jessica H.

Smoky even in the non-smoking area. Ok beer selection. Good service.

  • John G.

This was a very nice establishment. Great roof setting with an overlook of the square, nice live music, and comfortable on the inside. However, I was not impressed by the food and wait service. The pizza tasted much like a frozen food section pizza, and the wait staff seemed to lack focus.

Pres Pub is the kind of bar that kind of makes me giggle. It's one of those spots that everyone can agree is "awesome" for one reason or another, so you literally see every type of person there. Some are there for the bands, others the rooftop, others to chain smoke until 3:00 a.m, some the beer. Some people just to kick your "I'm judging you" face into overdrive, but the diversity makes the place fun. And Pres Pub is fun! The food is good too. I'm giving it a 3 and not 4 because, despite the three levels, diverse people, and cool rooftop, this is just not my preferred place downtown. It can get very crowded, it's smokey, there is almost always a cover at night (not standard on Gay St. or Market Square), and sometimes I'm just not in the mood for one or any combo of those things. Pres Pub is very cool, but it's not for everybody or every occasion.

Good taps. Great service. But the indoor smoking is rough. Maybe its a TN thing but this cali boy just cant dig it.

What a shit hole collective of all the assholes of the city. Shitty bands, beer, people and bar. Walked in to see a band. Bouncer said band was almost done. Next band sucked. Wanted money back. Bouncer was not cool. Smoky bar you all suck.

  • Derek A.

Only spent a little bit of time here, but wish I had spent longer. Cool vibe and some awesome jazz music playing. Very smokey on the first floor however, which is the only place where smoking is allowed (Don't they know that smoke rises?) and felt weird in a world where most places are smoke free.

  • Barbara H.

Sometimes it can be hard to get good service downstairs because it's so crowded, but if you go upstairs it's just fantastic. They have the drinks I like available and I love their greek veggie wrap. It's great for a late night hangout, and they ever have a beautiful rooftop. It feels much safer than other parts of downtown since it's right in market square. It's also nice that the parking garage is free during the hours you'd want to go to the bar. I'd give it 5 stars, but if you're hanging out downstairs it's just not fun. They do have live bands sometimes too, but sometimes that means a cover charge. I love music, but sometimes I just want to get out, have a bite to eat, and not have to pay a cover charge I wasn't expecting. I still pay the cover charge when they happen to have one.

  • Shari L.

Awesome armosphere! 2 floors with a rooftop. The roof had misters and beautiful flowers. I went on a Saturday night and they had a painter come where everyone took turns to paint. We had one of their blended moonshine drinks and the bbq chicken nachos...Both were amazing! My new favorite bar in knoxville!!

  • Amanda M.

The lack of customer service was very frustrating. We made plans to spend a beautiful St. Patrick's Day on the upstairs patio only to find that the upstairs bar was closed and the bartender one floor below was responsible for around 75 people. Although he was nice and apologetic, he was very overwhelmed. So not only did I have to walk downstairs to get beers, I had to wait about 25 minutes to even get served. This went on for hours, and management made no attempts to remedy the situation. Even after more servers and bartenders arrived they were very slow and their service was lacking. To be honest, it seemed like the entire staff was stoned and wouldn't recognize customer service if they experienced it first hand. This is the definition of a hippie bar, so don't expect anybody to go out of their way to help or serve you if any effort is required on their part.

The most over rated bar in town. Usually a cover, jerk door man . Service is lousy. Food will give you montezuma's revenge.

  • Clint M.

I have never been to Knoxville before and used Yelp to search for "live music" under "Bars". The cover was 5 bucks but well worth it! The band was from Atlanta, groovy and excellent. Drink prices were pretty normal. Three levels to this place, live music with smoking downstairs, more chilled second floor with no live music, and a rooftop bar. Something for everyone, I was impressed anyway.

We were sleeping in Knoxville on our way to Nashville and ended up in town on a Sunday night. According to our front desk guy, Preservation Pub was the only thing happening that night. The first floor was pretty full, but not so packed that you couldn't get around. The bartender was funny and quick. Other patrons chatted us up and gave us some recommendations for the rest of our trip. Great beer selection and I hear the bands are good. There wasn't a band when we were there, but the iPod playlist was solid. I would definitely recommend this place on a Sunday night!

  • Trevor W.

No ventilation in this bar and is extremely smokey. Good music but expect to pay a 2-5 dollar cover.

    (2)
  • Jackie B.

just a bunch of hoity toity jerks....the wait staff really sucks and people who don't drink ARE NOT WELCOME!!!! The manager exceeds rudeness with aggrogance and scorn. I hate Preservation pub.

  • Brad H.

Awesome bar, with multiple levels and a great rooftop patio. $3 pints on Sunday afternoon hit the spot, and the mister fan on the rooftop patio was great on a warm August afternoon. Will have to try some food next time.

  • Christine D.

Spent a absolutely gorgeous Sunday afternoon on the rooftop patio drinking $3 mimosa's and catching up with friends. Knoxville knows how to make mimosas. None of those prissy little champagne glass drinks here. Bartenders were nice and took good care of us. It wasn't busy at all. I dig the 3 story layout. Also worth mentioning is how cool the downstairs women's bathroom is. I'd definitely like to go back and check it out at night sometime.

  • Rachel S.

The rooftop is unique and beautiful. They can book some really rocking shows here! Chances are you'll know someone there whenever you go because half of Knoxville seems to live there. I've heard good things about the beer selection and food. However, none of that matters to me because I can't even get to the rooftop without reeking of the intense cigarette concentration of the first floor. It poisons the whole place. I went once this summer for a band I just love and while I enjoyed the music, I had to decontaminate myself immediately upon getting back home because I smelled like a wet ashtray. Ladies, don't take your expensive purses if you care about these things. Gents, don't take that dry-clean-only coat in there and expect to not smell like a bar until you pay $20 to remove the stench.

    (1)
  • Aaron J.

3 level bar with smoking on the lower level, more relaxed atmosphere on the middle level, and very small rooftop bar. There's a very eclectic mix of people here, which is always fun, but you will leave smelling like cigs because you have to enter the building through the bottom. It's gets pretty crowded and you have to pay a cover most nights, whether you're staying on the lower level to watch the band or not. I know a lot of people who love this place, but it's just not for me.

Visited this place for the first time tonight. Initially we were hesitant and almost decided against it due to reports of extreme smokiness in previous reviews. I'd like to point out that the upstairs speakeasy is non-smoking which was a pleasant surprise when we arrived. The stage setup upstairs is a little strange for catching an early band in the summer... the windows are right behind the stage and the setting sun creates somewhat of a blinding light. Luckily this didn't last long. I like this place for a number reasons: * The fact that they would host a 20's/30's style big band jazz band. * They had said show for free on a Saturday night. * They have a decent selection of craft beer. * They are in the cooler than average area of Market Square. * They have both a smoking level and a non smoking level, so there is something for everyone. I also heard there is rooftop patio. All in all, this is one of the better places I have visited in Knoxville and wouldn't turn down the opportunity to go back.

A good place to drink with friends. Recommended by an employee at the hotel. We checked it out and enjoy happy hour. It's a smoking joint so be prepared to smell like cigs when you leave.

Im with a touring band and we frequent Preservation Pub about once a month. EVERY time we come through we are treated amazing by the equally amazing staff and crowd there. Preservation Pub has become our favorite venue to play period. Everyone has an open mind for the bands and actually listens. Pair that with an amazing selection of craft beers and kick ass Pizza, and there is no other reason for us to play/go out anywhere else in Knoxville. The place is multi leveled with a spot for just about anyone, whether that be the die hard music fan, a good conversation upstairs, or some stargazing from their rooftop patio. Cheers Preservation Pub!

Ya think at one am after a long day at the theatre I could just stop in for a beer . On a Tuesday you are going to charge me to get in . Not a working mans bar !!!

Awesome spot to hang with friends and grab a great drink. Awesome (and cheap) pizza too!

  • Devin P.

Spent a little time there over this past weekend. Good vibe, fun place! Something like 4 stories with access to the rooftop with a bar? Yep! Anyways, the pizza was a-ok and that's all I can say, other than the whiskey flows and the woman swoon!

If I lived in Knoxville, you would find me here all the time. This is my kind of pub. Live music that's good but isn't too loud or obtrusive, cheap beer, bitchin awesome bartendresses and the crowd is congenial and fun. I met a few strangers who became amusing acquaintances. There isn't a whole lot going on in downtown Knoxville on a Monday night so I was thankful to find such a perfect "me" pub like Preservation Pub.

  • Andrew S.

First night and in Knoxville and some locals we met recommended that we make this our first and last stop for the evening. 5 dollar cover for the band "The Vibra Slaps" which was rocking out great 90's covers with other great tunes along the way. Server was on point even though the place was jammed. 3 dollar PBR tallboys and we even squeezed in a Ham Florentine Pannini which was supper yummy! Definitely recommend this place if you are in the Market Square area.

Preservation Pub is one of my favorite Knoxville bars. And that's saying a lot because I hate places that allow smoking. I appreciate the unique decor for the Pub as well as its location on Market Square. If you can snag an outside seat on the patio, it makes for great people-watching. The draft beer selection is usually pretty good and will occasionally feature some great regional craft beers. Their bottle selection is extensive. I would give the Pub another star if it banned smoking.

  • Liz Z.

Tried this place once and didn't love it, tried it again and didn't love it. There's indoor smoking here- if you like smoking in bars that's a plus, if you don't like going home with everything from your hair to your socks smelling like you're a chainsmoker you should probably avoid it. The decor is cool, with a varied clientele who all seem to be okay with everyone else there. The fact that the bar's open late- past almost every other place in town- is nice. The reason I only give this place 2 stars is the service, or lack thereof. Both times I was here it wasn't packed or even very busy but it took over 10 minutes for a waitress to come to our table. Then it took ages to get our drinks, and ages to get our receipt. Maybe regulars get more attention, but... blah.

Yet another fine stop on my trip to Knoxville. This was another happening place. Good beer selection and decent food. I would have liked to have stayed a bit longer but I had other pubs to drink at.

Thank you so much to the Preservation Pub in Knoxville for a very nice experience Thursday night! We hope to be back up there before the end of the summer. The Preservation Pub is the best venue I've ever played at in Knoxville! The staff is friendly and professional, the acoustics are good, the beer selection is swell and the pizza is awesome! Bands, if you're looking for a place to play in Knoxville, this is a great one! Music lovers, this is a superb place to check out music artists! This venue is truly a gem in East Tennessee.

Bette M. is a little bitter, no? This is my boyfriend's favorite bar. For the record, he hates Union Jack because IT'S too pretentious, so I doubt he'd go here if he agreed. ANYWAY. This is a nice bar. They have a great beer selection and it's a nice atmosphere. Seating can be somewhat limited and sometimes you can't talk because the bands are so loud. This isn't always the case, though. Bathrooms are a little iffy. Love Market Square in general. Lines for the bathroom can be 40 minutes during Sundown in the City.

I went back here recently to find that Preservation Pub had expanded. The upstairs is a little weird and doesn't really fit in with the character that is downstairs. It's still too new and bright. Seriously, put those lights on dimmers. It's hard enough trying to convince my wife that I'm attractive without her being able to see me. Downstairs is still great and they bring in lots of acts from all over the Southeast. There's a great beer selection here still and when we went on Wednesday night they were offering $1.50 domestics for the thrifty crowd.

The Preservation Pub has a great location on Market Square in the heart of Knoxville's "going out" scene. It is a great music venue and just a good old time bar. It is a narrow loud bar that just expanded up. It now has three levels including a beautiful rooftop. Well I hope it's still beautiful -seems there was a recent problem with a Market Square resident who felt that the flowers/plants on the Pres. Pub roof top was viewed as unsightly. Crazy...I know. When are flowers unsightly??? Only when your an angry, jealous, old jack....If you are looking for a cool place to spend an evening downtown, I definitely recommend stepping into the Pres. Pub. There is a "level" for everyone. And you can get a little grub while you're here...they serve pizza all night...maybe more, check it out! Cheers!

While I like Pres pub, I guess I am actually really indifferent about this place. I've become to understand that its not actually all so much the place I love, its the buzz that is usually going on in here, and the fact, if you smoke, its one of the few places left that you can still smoke inside. They do often have some great music on and while we were there on a Monday, in addition to the good deals on happy hour, they were also serving free pizza. While we were not hungry, it was nice to see 2 meat free choices, and all of them looked fresh and yummy. i usually would prefer to go through the bar. I dont know what it is, it is probably just that Im not "cool" enough or something, it is so hard to get any/decent service sometimes. That goes for when they're busy and when they aren't busy. There is one cocktailer in particular that, maybe, he might just be too cool to be doing any job. That said, Monday night we had a (rather slow) server who was very sweet and apologetic the few times we had to wait a little longer than expected. No prolem though, I know what its like, its almost harder to give great service when youre slow because your mind wanders more freely and leaves more room for error and slower service. Overall, I do enjoy all the fun times to be had at Pres Pub, slow service at times, and all. They do have a great selection of beers, as well often change their special drafts. Just a heads up, I dont know if you will wanna order a Bloody Mary. My friend was really craving one and they let us know they didn't have tabasco. ok, no biggie. But YEEEESSSHHH-so gross. I totally give props for trying, it was actually funny, as we did a blind taste test and I would've said it was a Horseradish vodka with tomato rocks. lol. but still, at the price of $775 thats an expensive bloody mary.

Was in Knoxville for business and this was the only thing happening downtown. It turned out to be a great find, with banging live music, awesome drink specials, and a cool, eclectic crowd of people... just what the doctor ordered. The selection of beer is superb as well... with quite a few of my favorite Colorado microbrews on tap. The smoking thing is kind of a bummer but what'cha gonna do... its a happening bar with live music.

    (4)
  • Andrea B.

This place was ok. Good beer on tap, interesting atmosphere. We weren't there for any live music, so maybe my opinion isn't terribly valid. It does have a great location, right in market square.

Despite what the other review says, this is a pretty cool bar. Laid back, lots of good beer, nice atmosphere. What more do you need?

  • Janet S.

A-OK because it was open on a Thursday at 12.45am when we needed an after show feed and wind down. Three levels of dimly lit bar, band on ground floor. Limitied menu of sandwiches and nacho type stuff, adequate. Not particularly friendly or good service but it was late so lattitude given.

  • Tara S.

This is one of my favorite places to get a drink, especially with their semi-recent expansion. downstairs is narrow, creaky, and smoky with booths and a long bar and 2 tiny little unisex bathrooms. There is a fortune-teller on hand in the evenings, and music most nights. I like it down here before the music, unless I'm actually there to see the band. The 2nd floor is non-smoking, has a smaller bar, nicer bathrooms (gender specific!) and a small stage with trivia or bands most nights. The rooftop- I can't figure out when it's actually open, but it's so nice! The only rooftop bar on the Square. A limited bar, but you can just run down to the 2nd floor if you want something else.

I stopped in for an hour or so while passing through Knoxville. Verdict: this place is a winner. Great tap beer selection, happening crowd, nice service, and legit live music. I had a pretty good time. And (don't tell anyone) I was by myself. I would definitely recommend to anyone who is in the area.

What a cool find! With my first trip to Knoxville I wasn't sure where to begin. I had multiple people mention Preservation Pub so I knew it had to be worth stopping by. With three floors it offers a range for everyone depending on what you are in the mood for. 1st floor is (unfortunately) smoking therefore I am taking away a star. But it gives a casual pub feel. 2nd floor has live music and 3rd floor has the magic tree with a view of Market Square. I also only gave it 4 stars because there was a cover on a Wednesday night..I thought that was interesting. Staff was very friendly and I will def be back!

I want to love this place. I really do. It's a classic Knoxville establishment, they have a good beer selection, live music, and the roof top bar is to die for. Unfortunately, I just can't bring myself to go here most nights. The biggest reason is that, despite it being 2015, this place still allows smoking inside it's doors. It's hard to enjoy myself knowing I'm going to stink when I leave. From all the years of alcohol, smoke and sweat, the whole place just has a funk about it. It can also get pretty crowded and I've heard a lot of women complain about sexual harassment in the form of unrelenting advances and groping. Apparently the staff isn't too responsive to complaints about this. I still go from time to time, mostly during the day to enjoy the roof (where at least the smoke dissipates better). I'm all for Keeping Knoxville Scruffy. Can't we do that without cigarette smoke and unruly bar behavior?

  • Casie Rachelle R.

I'm not a huge fan of anywhere that makes you pay a cover. My girlfriends wanted to go here, so I followed along. The place is nice, fun and very young (college town). Multiple levels and I did see people ordering food. They had a band playing that was LOUD and not that great. Small dance floor and you are constantly being bumped into just walking through or standing in the back. The drinks are standard bar drinks. I always get beer. The bartender didn't have much of a personality. The bathrooms are large and writing everywhere. Not the cleanest but serves it purpose. Parking can be tricky sometimes too.

Super cool three story bar, I've visited 5 times before writing this review as to be able to produce and provide a proper aspect of preservation pub. I really enjoy the vibe and the roof top bar, cheap beers, smoking inside if that's your thing. I haven't eaten here but I imagine it's the best food, check her out, she's a good old girl

Absolutely one of my favorite stops in the country. This place is a dream come true for traveling musicians. Good people, good community, awesome vibe, and passionate people! I can't get enough! Music every single night, with enthusiastic crowds, professional sound, a beautiful stage, and a convivial space just can not be beat. Go here!

    (5)
  • Tarya M.

This is one of the coolest bars in Knoxville. The clientele is interesting and diverse, the beer selection is awesome, and the staff is friendly and knowledgable about the various beers. The prices are reasonable and the bar food has been reliably good. Most important, it's one of the few places left for a smoker. I know smoking has become a social taboo, but many smokers still exist and want to have a beverage and a smoke without having to go outside and stand next to a dumpster. There are so many bars (virtually all of them) that cater to non smokers, so I'm happy that Preservation Pub remains as a last bastion for smokers.

I like to go here, but a woman isn't safe drinking here anymore. I've been groped randomly, harrassed, and witnessed other women (friends and strangers) harrassed too. Shows are packed sometimes, and a random guy groped my butt in the crowd. It was purposeful and he tried to run, but I caught him in the crowd and started punching. People pulled me off, and then witnesses came forward to him groping me. Security refused to kick him out after I reported it with the witnesses in tow. Only after he harrassed several more people, was clearly bombed out of his mind, and tried to sit at people's tables he didn't know, did the bar get the message and get him out. I've thought about posting this review with just that story, but really more serious things then that have happened. This is the only bar in Knoxville that I've had to clearly tell men I am not interesed in them and to leave me alone, becaue yes, I really am here for the show. It's gotten creepy. That has happened at least 3 different times. It's not easy here as a lone female or with friends, and my friends have had men refuse to leave them alone. I've literally had to tell a man "My friend told you to leave, and you're going to. Right now." He tried to say he was going to order a drink around me and moved up on her. She told him to go away again, and our male friends had to step in to our defense. Another woman randomly walked into my circle of friends another night clearly panicked. She started talking about how a guy wouldn't leave her alone. The guy followed her up to us and my male friends had to physically stop him and ringed around the females with her in the center of us. The guy was seriously to drunk to be in public. Security saw a real fight building only becuse we were very close to the door, and got the drunk guy outside. They need to be more responsive to sexual harassment allegations. On the groping issue, I realize now I should have gone out and alerted the police who patrol market square, when security did nothing. Go get the cops if it happens to anyone out here. Pres pub is letting it go unchecked. They're only kicking people out if they're clearly hammered, no matter the behavior.

Was here last night to see some stand-up comedy, think they call it Underground Comedy, but it's basically an open mic, so it's hit or miss. The show is Sunday from 8-10pm so I encourage fellow Yelpers to come out and enjoy local Comedy. There's no cover, no two drink minimum, so this is a cheap date. The show was definitely blue, but the crowd was great, very generous with their laughter. Sat at the bar, they had pints for 3 bucks which was great. They do have a limited menu of pub grub, ordered the Mediterranean Chicken and was a bit disappointed with the lack of flavor. I like that this place supports local comedy, I'll be back to listen to More soon.

Having to pay a cover to drink at a bar is unfortunate. I usually do not venture to market square to drink, unless a friend is playing a show here. A good mix of people, and is always open. Even in the ice storm of 2015! They have three floors, which is great when you are trying to purposely not say hi to someone. The roof deck is perfect in warmer months, and include fans to keep you cool. The food here is good, one of my favorites being the vegetarian meatball sandwich!
