When this restaurant first opened, I would have given it a much better review (had I known about Yelp at the time). However, the quality of service and food have gone down considerably. The food is well-priced and the portions generous, but it is also very greasy (at least the dishes I have tried). It feels like a rock sitting in your stomach for the rest of the day. If you order vegetable fajitas, make sure to tell them no cheese if you don't want it. Cheese is not mentioned on the menu and the fajitas were brought to me COVERED in thick, gloppy, semi-melted cheese. I've had the other fajitas before and there was no cheese, so I had a reasonable expectation the veggie fajitas would be sans cheese as well. Just goes to show you should ALWAYS ask questions. I've tried three times to order a beer and have not succeeded once. The server doesn't understand my request and just shakes his head when I asked for a certain beer last time (it's a beer I can see on their tap, so I know they carry it). The most unpleasant part of this Don Gallo is the lady who runs the cash register. She wasn't there when the place first opened, but since she arrived I can see a difference in the place. She talks endlessly and loudly and you can't understand a third of what comes out of her mouth, so you just nod and smile and hope she finishes soon so you can get back to work on time. She was also VERY rude to my friend last time we went together. We arrived about 2:40pm and their lunch menu runs until 3. We had plenty of time to order and have it delivered well within the lunch time window (as we have done in the past). She seated us with dinner menus. When my friend went back to the register to request lunch menus, the woman loudly and rudely ARGUED WITH HER about what time it was, saying that it was after 3. She was SO loud and angry that the manager came out from the back to see what was going on. He reseated us with lunch menus and apologies. I appreciated his professional and polite tone. I won't be going back to Don Gallo's, which is a shame because it used to be such a good restaurant with friendly staff and is so close to work and fast enough that it was fun to go on my lunch break. If you DO go, do order the guacamole. They make it fresh every day and it is perfectly spiced and is a delicious accompaniment to the handmade chips and salsa they automatically bring to the table. I have made a meal of just those chips and guacamole. Also, the Pollo Supremo is to DIE FOR! I might do some takeout on that one.

If you're in the Hardin Valley/Pellissippi Parkway area and searching for a good Mexican restaurant, Don Gallo is the way to go. While it's not quite as good as the location in Rocky Hill, this restaurant shouldn't disappoint you. I've been here for several lunches and dinners, and the service and food quality are equally good. They have ample patio seating and quite a large dining room that can accommodate large parties. Their chips and salsa are super tasty- the salsa is very fresh with onions and cilantro. Their lunch menu boasts wonderfully priced dishes that come to you quite quickly. Last Thursday, I ordered their chicken enchilada with rice & beans, and it was $4.99! Pretty sure you can't get that even at Taco Bell, and the quality of this food is muuuuch better. Basically, Don Gallo is quick & cheap...but the quality of the food and service are a bit better than your average "cheap Mexican restaurants". I recommend this to anyone in the west Knox/Karns area!

The food is mediocre, service is slow, and the salsa is not spicy. Seriously, the salsa very closely resembles canned tomato sauce. If you must eat here, as it is close to many offices, then I recommend the quesadilla; it's hard to mess up tortilla and cheese.

Not the best salsa in town, but you would not have been able to tell by the way I was murdering my chips. I met some coworkers here to say goodbye to someone that is leaving our company. After we discovered happy hour is from 12-7 we all had margaritas (a few) and a little to eat. The margarita on the rocks is decently strong, and we were all pleased. Eventually I ordered the Nachos Supremos. They were pretty good and enough to split with someone else. The standard beef, chicken, beans, sour cream, and cheese mix. I'm definitely not against anyone that wants to eat here or meet here after work.

The hot tortilla is good. The drink pink lemonade is not too strong and thick,it seems to have water added... My boy friend and I had a $ 18 entree for two persons here with grilled beef, pork and chicken in it. It tastes OK.

I've visited this location only once, so in fairness, I'll go easy. While the menu here is identical to the E. Emery location, the plates to eat that came to my table were not. Something seems to be missing, but fortunately they are not far from the mark. The service on this particular evening was lacking and left more to be desired as well. Hopefully Hardin Valley will take a page out of E. Emery's book and duplicate their success! Looking forward to your ascension!

Went here for dinner last night and it was delicious! Fresh salsa, cheese dip was amazing and the chimichanga was so yummy! Also the service was great! We will definitely be going back! If you're in the Hardin valley area and you like Mexican food def try this place out!!!

So far since I moved to Knoxville I have not been happy with the Mexican food places. This so far is my favorite one. Ordered quesadilla ranchero with a mix of chicken and steak. Everything was piping hot and tasty! I will be coming back for drinks and dinner.

Certainly not the best fajitas and salsa with hard, cold chips. The service was slow and they were not busy, had to basically flag them down for extra napkins. The employees were in a huddle by the bar speaking spanish of course. The chicken in the fajitas was very overcooked and dry and the shrimp had a funny taste to them. Would not recommend. Will not go here again.

This was my first time at a Don Gallo location and I got excited because it is really close to my house. We went for an early dinner last night and sat in the bar area. Since it was early there were only about 2 tables with people. Our waiter came over quickly to take our drinks and we ordered. It then took 10 minutes to get our drinks (a water and a diet coke), he dropped them off and asked if we were ready, since the menu was quite large, I had not decided yet but ordered the Cheese Dip. It took another 10 minutes to get that. The waiter threw it down on the table and walked away without saying anything. 5 minutes later he returned to take our order. My boyfriend ordered the Especialante and I ordered the Taquitos Mexicanos - we also ordered a Margartia and Sangria. I watched the bar pour my sangria out of a pitcher (it was almost the end of it) and then pour the margarita out of the slushy machine. Both came out quickly. My sangria tasted like a dry red wine without the fruit flavor. It was quite strong and gross. I am usually not the type of person to complain but my boyfriend told the waiter and he gave an attitude but replaced it with a margarita. Our waiter did not come back for awhile and our food did not come out yet and we wanted more chips (which cost an extra $1.99), it was the hostess that came over and refilled my drink and got us more chips. Our food came out right after. My boyfriend enjoyed his Especialante meal- nothing special, just normal food not to rave about. My Taquitos Mexicanos were very bland and not worth the $9.99. Our waiter did not return. We were sitting there, clearly done for about 30 minutes and no one came over to check on us. Finally, the hostess walked by to grab a high chair and saw us and asked if I needed a box. I said yes and the check. Our waiter came over a second later and said, so you need the check and a box - we said yes and he walked away. Again, the hostess ended up bringing both. We waited 9 minutes (I timed on my phone) for someone to pick up the card for payment and it was a completely different girl. The restaurant was not busy at all so there is no excuse for this kind of treatment. I work hard for my money and to spend $50 on going out when I can get 4 meals from that in the grocery store is a treat. Unexcusable. I will still with Abuelos or Chez Guervara. Drive a little extra but worth it for those. Never will I go back to Don Gallo.

Great service, cool atmosphere and a nice patio. The food is consistently good and the prices reasonable. A def for that frequent Mexican itch.

If you are looking for a great tasting, authentic carne asada taco, this is the place to find it. The meat has great flavor and is very tender. The second time I tried this dish, the tacos came in flour tortillas (not as good imo). The salsa is thick and flavorful. I also tried the queso del mar. The del mar is only shrimp and onion, fried and mixed into a great tasting, rather mild white queso. Definitely give this place a try. My only complaint is that the menu states that an extra order of chips and salsa costs vs being endless.

We haven't eaten in a while. That would give it a shot. Fair to average food. Everything was covered in cheese nothing special. Had the chili rellenos. They were basically cheese and peppers. My wife said she likes Taco Bell better

Ate at this restaurant on Sunday. Very prompt service to be seated and the waiter very professional. The salsa and chips were very good. I had the shrimp tacos. Very good and the sauce had a kick to it. I will be returning to this restaurant. Good atmosphere and roomy.

The past 2 times I ordered take-out from Don Gallo they messed everything up. The first time, I ordered a large queso dip. They charged me $7 and forgot to put it in the bag. The girl said she would "write my name down" and I could get it next time, but my name was nowhere to be found the next time. They still gave me the free order. Which was awesome. However, they left out napkins, straws, silverware, and tortillas to go with the fajitas I ordered. The queso was almost cold. My boyfriend took off the lid on his drink and it looked like someone bit on the top of the styrofoam cup. Not lying. They also charged .45 for a "take-out fee". And they didn't do that last time. Which was weird. Let's just say the best thing that came out of that order was the giant paper bag for my cat to play with. Not planning on going back.

Food is always good and the salsa is freshly made with good flavor as antoher poster pointed out. Try the Churri Queso for a special addition. It's your standard queso dip with Churizo ( a spicy sausage) added for an extra little something. I (always) order the pollo cayoacan. It's a flattened chicken breast with spinach and churizo on top of it. It comes with rice, beans, and tortillas. I like to cut it into strips and throw that with some rice and beans into a tortilla. Makes 3 taco/burrito type things for you. Toss a spoon or two of the churi queso on it and you've got it made. Service is always fast and the food is always hot. Try it if you're out Hardin Valley way.

Good, but not quite as good as the CDG on Northshore in my opinion. Like the other, the chips are too thick and salsa too bland for my taste, but the food is really good and the margaritas, especially the frozen, are some of the best in Knoxville. My wife ordered a dish with grilled chucked covered with chorizo, spinach, and cheese, that may have been the best Mexican dish I've ever tasted. I may never order anything else here again. Wish they would bring back the queso fundido, with chorizo and roasted onions and poblanos, another favorite of ours.

Visiting Knoxville soccer tournament parents, you know who you are, this is the restaurant for you! It's close to the fields and they make a margarita large enough to make you forget the half asleep teenage line ref and the team of steroid fed mutant children that used your child as a doormat. The food is above average and they have a fresh made salsa with a refreshing cilantro finish that is a nice change from the standard " junk from a jar" fair. The decor is modern with a South American flair. The bar has two TVs (one for Football and one for Soccer). Over all a great place for that much needed between game break. I have but one complaint. Both the toilet seats in the men's (and I'm told) and ladies rooms are loose. I will refrain from divulging or speculating on any mishaps that resulted from this impromptu rump rodeo ride, but I do sincerely hope this alarming oversight has been eradicated!

It's OK I go here about once a month for lunch as its very convenient to the office. There's much better Mexican food in Knoxville. Don Gallo serves it very quickly, and the plates are oven hot. The food is nothing special.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
