I've been going to El Charro for lunch for two years now and I am always waited on immediately and was shocked at some of the reviews below, which said differently. I'm starting to use Yelp more and more and figured I'd review those places that are great deals, that is, great values. El Charro is at the top of the list. With some lunch specials at under $5, and I usually got one of those, and then other specials from the lunch menu, there is more than enough to satisfy anyone. The food is great, service is fast, and so inexpensive! When you're sick, get their chicken enchilada soup! Wow!!! That is a staple whenever my wife or I am sick. So good...

I've been going here forever. Most of the time it's good. They are busy so the service does suffer from time to time. I would eat there again. And i do agree with the other reviews, the menus are a little sticky sometimes.

I used to LOVE el charro. Went there a couple weeks ago. We sat down at the table and waited forever for someone to come and take our drink order. Finally, someone came and acknowledged us. We got water and he wanted our food order immediately. Gave the food order, at this point we still did not have chips and salsa so we asked for it. 10 more minutes pass and we have not seen our server nor have we received chips and salsa (which other patrons are munching on). More time passes, we get up and I tell the girl in the front that we do not want our food if they are even making it? She says "ok, bye!". Will not be back. Tables and menus were super sticky, which should have been a red flag anyway.

***1/2 stars I love visiting the US as we can't seem to get the same good, authentic Mexican here (north of the Canada-US border). El Charro seems to be very popular with the lunch crowd and was recommended by a local business associate on my business trip to Knoxville. I ordered the "Speedy Gonzales #1", which was a taco and enchilada with rice (had the option of beans). My order came quickly and I was happy with the food. Didn't experience any of the problems with service that others have noted.

Pretty good Mexican food. The two El Charro's are the only places in Knoxville you can get chilaquiles - and they are good! I'd probably give it four stars except that the service can be badly lacking from time to time. Food is authentic. Unfortunately, so is the service. Lunch specials are very reasonably priced.

This is the best mexican restaurant in Knoxville!. You know you are a regular when they ask you where you have been when you haven't been there in a few weeks and already have the drinks brought to you as soon as they see you walk in. On average, we have been going here around once a week for the past 5 years. I cant find a better mexican restaurant that actually gives you decent size portions and isn't stingy on anything. The tacos are packed full of meat and I usually get an enchilada with cheese sauce on it instead of red and the cheese literally covers the whole plate. The best thing overall is the salsa for sure, it is a puree and is spicy. Also its cheap..for 2 people its about $15 to dine in.

Always so good and so cheap that you never care to pay your bill. Just a good, basic Mexican place. I love their Chicken soup.

I never thought I'd rave about a taco salad. But I'm about to. A prospective client recommended we have lunch here today. Trying my best to stay low carb, I ordered the taco salad with grilled chicken. Not only did this salad have the standard meat, tomatoes, lettuce, and cheese, it also had grilled red and yellow bell peppers - grilled and nicely spiced. El Charro offers a nicely varied lunch menu very fairly priced. Give them a try!

This locations is typically the best choice (as opposed to the UT campus location and further west near Farragut). The food is authentic and very good but as others have mentioned, so is the service. The staff is often engrossed in the never-ending feed of soccer displaying on the television near the restaurants entrance. Prices are good however and for a quick lunch, it usually can't be beaten.

"Authentic Mexican" in Knoxville? Well, pretty much so. We've eaten there twice and both were impressed with the food. The tamales are like what your abuela would make. The carnitas are large and delicious. Arroz con pollo not only has chicken and spanish rice, but red and yellow bell peppers and onions. The food is flavorful and the service was good.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
