Anaba has some of the best sushi I have ever eaten, and some of the best Japanese food as well. It favorably compares to places in Seattle, Portland, and Chicago, and with better prices. Everything on the menu is very good, except for the Chicken Teriyaki (they use white meat instead of dark, which just doesn't work). The service was very questionable to outright bad for a long, long time, but seems to have gotten better in the past year. Try the takoyaki (octopus balls). You won't be disappointed.

Today I discovered the Anaba Restaurant. What a great find! I had the japanese curry with tofu. Absolutely wonderful flavor! It had the perfect blend of spices with a touch of heat. The plate came with much more food than I anticipated. The pricing is very reasonable. I was very pleased with my meal. I will certainly be back.

Excellent experience on a sleepy Saturday lunch visit. Food & service were both excellent and the only thing that keeps this from being an even better experience was a pulsing droning sound from the HVAC unit that was audible throughout the restaurant. I had the sushimi special and it was very well presented and tasted extremely fresh. My wonderful wife had the Happy Tummy premium roll and the tempura shrimp were also very good. If not for the HVAC droning on and on this would have been a 5 star experience. Still very, very good and I'm sure the HVAC is a temporary issue. Definitely well worth the money!!

Based on previous experiences, Anaba has been one of my favorite places to go for sushi. The sushi is probably one the best I've had in Knoxville, and their Monday and Tuesday night specials are killer. If the restaurant is packed, expect a long wait. It's pretty loud as well during dinner hours because it's so popular. Service is nice, although they do get bogged down and miss drinks if the restaurant is packed. The booths are nice as well. They're well lighted, same with the bar. As for the food, the sushi is consistently high quality. I've never had a bad roll here, and I've tried quite a few of them. Rolls I had tonight: Double Dynamite: Warm roll. Crunchy shell on the outside, lightly seared tuna on the inside. Served with eel sauce drizzled on the roll and mayo/sriracha on the side. One of my favorites; I order this basically every time I go. Anaba Roll: Chef's creation. I had a split roll tonight; the first half had tuna and avocado in the center and was topped with salmon and roe. The other half was salmon and avocado in the center topped with what looked like red snapper. There was a small salad and a mixture of sriracha and mayo on the side. Delicious! The chef definitely knows what he's doing, so you can't go wrong with this roll. I knocked it down a star because I had to wait an hour for my rolls and the waiter didn't refill my water. Can't really blame them; the restaurant was packed to the brim and they were training new hires. Will definitely be going back soon!

Usually here about once a month because it is very convenient to where we live. They have a nice selection of sushi and several of their specialty rolls are excellent. Particularly fond of tuna tuna, red and white, Mediterranean and Pica Hawaiian rolls. Excellent half price tuna Monday and Salmon Tuesday deals.

You get for what you pay for! Great food and wonderful service! You enter and almost every waiter greets you. Our server was so friendly and very attentive. I ordered tempura udon, which came with tempura veggies as well. The portion is huge!!! For $12, you can't beat that!l My bf got yummy tummy roll. It came in a big bowl! It had fried shrimp in a savory sauce on top of sushi with I think shrimp and avocado. It was so so delicious and worth the price. I live in Nashville where I'm spoiled with so many restaurants to choose from. This is definitely a just to go place if you're looking for a japanese restaurant in the area!

I had a craving for ramen and for Knoxville, this is as good as it gets. I've only had the ramen and sushi here, but what I've had wasn't bad. There is a wide selection of authentic Japanese cuisine on its menu, including sashimi bowls, seafood specials, tempura, udon, and more sushi than you could possibly think of. I'd definitely give this place a try, although I've had better, there's probably no other authentic Japanese restaurant comparable in Knoxville.

Positives: Legit menu that covers a lot of the bases. Authentic flavor, even though it doesn't hit all the notes for me. Went tonight for a work shindig. About half a dozen Japanese and the same number of Americans. We ate 'Japanese style' in that we all shared a variety of dishes that kept coming wave after wave. It was all pretty good. I probably liked the oysters and squid best. Though I'd call it small ball, with a lot of singles and doubles - not so many home runs. Negatives: The pork & kimchi, tempura, and saba are a couple examples of dishes that weren't bad, but didn't hit the notes I was looking for. The service wasn't bad, but was spotty. To be fair our table kept him hopping and the place was fairly full. Conclusion: I would have loved to have had this place in Toledo, where I lived for a time, even though I wasn't blown away by any one dish. It's an authentic Japanese restaurant that did a number of things well. I recommend giving it a try if you are in the area.

Good sushi, fair pricing and the 2 for 1 happy hour is clutch!

I love this place and if you go on Tuesday you can get half price salmon rolls. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was for dining area cleanliness. I have asked for a table to be cleaned after I've been seated and only the end I was sitting at was wiped off.... That is not acceptable. Other than that one time all my experiences here have been good. The food is always great and the servers are on point. I'll definitely go back.

It's hard to believe there is Japanese food this good in Knoxville! This used to be Kalamata Cafe, but now it's Anaba. Food is great and service is good, still a bit expensive. They have hard to find Japanese dishes like katsu curry and takoyaki.

Love this place! I usually order Okonomiyaki, which is not on their regular menu. It's Osaka style and absolutely delicious. My husband usually orders their sushi so we normally visit here on their half off days (Monday is half off tuna and Tuesday is half off salmon). He really likes their ceviche tuna!

I've been through ups and downs with this place since 2009. Before they were Anaba they were Kalamata Cafe, a Greek joint that happened to have a full sushi & Japanese menu. New owners took over and slowly, but surely, things seemed to go downhill. They continued to run their great salmon and tuna specials (Mon & Tues nights), but inevitably, the size of the fish in the half priced sushi dishes got smaller and smaller, while the amount of rice in every roll increased. I stopped going there for over a year because I felt that I was getting jacked. More recently-- over the past several months--I decided to give them another chance (since they are convenient to a Barre 3 class I take at Northshore Towne Center). Happy to say that I've noticed a significant improvement in the quality of food once again. I'm ecstatic because I really LOVED this place for the first year or so (2009-2010). I will mention that last time (about 2 weeks ago) we were served rotten wasabi. The waitress felt bad, admitted that it might be old indeed, and brought us new wasabi. I also want to mention that each time we go, over the last several months, I've had to specifically request no grey fish on my salmon. What I mean is--I want purely pink salmon. The good part of the fish, as far as I am concerned. Not the fishy, yucky part near the skin that is grey and tough. If I don't ask, I typically receive a piece of sashimi (or 2 or 3) or nigiri or a roll (an attempt to hide it inside) with pink AND grey. Overall this place has improved and I'm willing to go back again to taste more improvements. Good job Anaba. Keep up the good work!

Tuesday night half price salmon is awesome. The service here is always phenomenal. Be sure to tip based on regular prices. It's easy to forget that even though the salmon, or tuna on Monday, is half price, it still requires the same amount of effort to serve your table.

Great spot, sort of out-of-the-way, so it's not usually crowded, although lunch can run a little slow. The owner obviously takes great pride in his sushi and sashimi which is well priced and excellent. I also recommend the Yakiniku Bento and the rice bowls. There's a LOT of variety on the menu.

Excellent service. You are always greeted with a "HELLO!" when you walk in the door and a "THANK YOU" when you leave. The sushi is excellent and definitely the best we have had in Knoxville. They have an eclectic take on their rolls, with some being Anaba originals. My favorite is the Tuna Fire, which uses fresh jalepenos and habenero infused roe. The Pica Hawaiian is also great. Honestly everything is great, even the lowly California Roll.

Very good sushi. Good specials on Monday and Tuesday. Try avocado tempura, salmon fire roll or otoro (if they have it available)! Good sake selection.

Very interesting sushi creations! Try the "hot" sushi. The very expansive menu can be a bit overwhelming, but for the price you get good portion sizes and unique food. We had two of the hot sushi rolls, crab cake and volcano, and they were both very different from anything we had. They also didn't leave us wishing for more once we were finished. The volcano roll actually came with extra crab meat on the side, as did the crab cake roll. We also had the calamari for an appetizer. It was good, not as good as Nama's with the squid being a tad on the tougher side. Everything came out in a well-timed fashion. Appetizer, roll 1, then roll 2. The server could have used a bit more personality, but other than that, great experience. I also loved the animated sushi chefs who shout a big warm hello, and goodbye come back when you walk in and leave. Lastly, ambiance was very nice. Dimly lit, casual but chic.

Apparently this used to be a "Grappanese" place - Greek and Japanese combo. I'm glad it went all Japanese because they do sushi well! I had a few of my usual nigiris, squid, salmon and scallop; they DO put wasabi between the fish and the rice which is important for people with low spice tolerances like me to know. I wouldn't go for the scallop again though, it was just so so. Buuuut, they have a fruity roll thats 8 pieces of fruit heaven! Strawberry! Mango! Pineapple! I'm not usually one for nontraditional sushi, but this one is a great palate cleanser for before or after your meal. I'll be back next time I'm in Knoxville. Also! I saw on their facebook that they have half off salmon dishes on Tuesday dinner!

One of the better Japanese restaurants in Knoxville. Good selection of sushi and Japanese tapas. The location is great where on a good day sitting outside on the patio is recommended. The service every time I've been has been great and the price is reasonable in my opinion. Good to take family, friends, coworkers, and a date.

Excellent food, friendly service. I had the kimchi pork and it was very tasty. The fried rice was light and yummy. The salad was large with a nice ginger dressing that is different than most Japanese restaurants. They have Kirin Ichiban on draft. Great sushi selections, rice bowls and appetizers. My only negative comment is that their extensive sake selection is overpriced.

Went there today to pick up take out. Yes the food was good. BUT, not as, described in menu. A bowl of soup for take out is about 4oz. The container was nearly empty. The rolls were extremely small, mostly rice. And the seaweed salad was also a joke with very little portions. The tuna tetaki was really good but no ponzu sause. I was overall not impressed! Oh and did I mentioned that they got my order wrong as well??

I'm new to the area, and today felt like trying to find a good, authentic Japanese restaurant that wasn't take-out or buffet. I've not looked before, but since I had company over and saw how high the ratings for Anaba were, I'd give it a shot. The restaurant is tucked away in a little shopping center, and looks kind of commercial when you pull up. But the interior is dark and comfortable, with a patio out on the side for eating outdoors if you wish. We sat inside at a booth, and the atmosphere was just very calming. For our appetizer, we ordered takoyaki, a dish I'm very fond of but can have trouble finding. The way they served them was a bit different than what I'm used to, with the sauce on the side and under the balls instead of on top of them, it actually made them much easier to eat. Everything was the perfect consitency, with the crunchy outside to the chewy center. My entree was my favorite dish, tempura udon. The broth was stronger than I usually like, but it ended up being a plus, because the noodles held the flavor very well, meaning I wasn't struggling with the noodles and a seperate spoon for the broth at the same time. The noodles came with greens, scallions, and crabstick in the broth, which was really great. The tempura came on the side, my preferred way of serving, and I ate the vegetables on their own and soaked the shrimp in the broth. It was absolutely freaking fantastic, and places near the top as far as the best tempura udon I've ever had goes. The meal was affordable; both my appetizer and sizeable entree only ran me about twenty bucks, which I was more than happy to pay for the quality and portion size. The service was acceptable, nothing that really blew me away, but the food was the most important part. It was also a bit weird how the restaurant, which had a very Japanese feel to it and served some very authentic Japanese food, also had Greek food on their menu. But over all, the experience was fantastic, and it looks like I've found my go-to Japanese restaurant on the first try.

We came here for dinner and my husband and I have been to some really awesome sushi places in other states and we were not impressed. They had some strange combinations of sushi and didn't have many of the basic ones you find at most sushi restaurants. My husband's salmon sushi didn't look very fresh at all and my chicken teriyaki sushi was bland. I don't think we will be going back.

This is a very nice sushi restaurant. I was very surprised to find such a quality sushi place in Knoxville with a great overall attitude of the main sushi chef (I think he is the owner). The fish is of high quality. The waiters (even though we were sitting at the sushi bar) are attentive and responsive. On a Friday night, the place was rather empty. I was surprised, but as a result everything was happening very quickly, which was nice. Either because I was there for the first time, and did not get the full vibe of the place, or because the restaurant had plenty of empty space, something in the atmosphere was missing; that makes me reluctant to give a full score, but rather solid 4.5 points.

Well I just wanna say it is not very good like what they said before...We came here for dinner. We ordered terayaki but felt disappointed. And the fried pork, shrimp, fish and oyster assorted dish tastes just so-so.

I'm pretty disappointed that we did not come here sooner, given that my family lives just down the street and we are all sushi/Japanese food hounds. Word on the street in Knoxville is that Kanpai closed, so we finally gave this place a shot on a whim. I was home for 5 days. We ate here three of those days... It was quite good. Someone else said the prices are rough, but I didn't think so at all. Maybe that is due to the fact that I now live in the DC area. I thought the prices were great, and on many rolls they offer a half roll. The tuna collar is as good as advertised. Give it a go. Nothing flashy or amazing, but if you like good, fresh fish flavors then this is the dish for you. I am also really fond of their samurai roll and my mom raves about the lobster roll. She also declared their spring rolls to be the best she's ever had. this is a go to place for me when I'm in town now. Done deal. I am glad they ditched the Greek BS and went full bore Japanese (well, there are a few Greek items still hidden in the menu :) ). It's well done, the service is solid, and the food is really nice.

Best in Knoxville! Only place around here that I can get the traditional Japanese!!

This is the best sushi place in town. Sei, the head sushi chef, is literally a sushi master from Japan. In order to get that title you have to have years of training and experience with sushi. The sushi rolls are huge and you get a lot of fish in your rolls. The spicy tuna rolls have chunks of tuna in them, instead of shredded tuna like most places. The service wasn't that great so now I just always sit at the sushi bar and the sushi chefs always makes sure that I'm taken care of. They also have an authentic Japanese menu for those of you wanting to try some real Japanese food. I recommend coming on a Mon for their half off tuna rolls. You won't be disappointed!

Tucked away from the mess that is Kingston Pike is truly an amazing and authentic Japanese restaurant. This is even better than the place in Farragut (Far East) and much more conveniently located in Knoxville. I love me some takoyaki balls, and they were delicious -- fresh, hot, actually round (not like those flan-shaped microwaved ones) with bonito flakes/nori strips/kewpie mayonnaise. My date and I both enjoyed their sushi which included ama ebi, toro, and sardines. All were so delicious a grown man cried (and did). Haven't had any of their cocktails, but their specials look great. The menu is extensive, so you'll be hard pressed to find something you didn't like. My only disappointment was their tonkotsu ramen. I tried it, and strangely, it included green beans, cabbage, white buttons, and stir-fried pork. Kind of like a redneck version of it. Stick with the traditional recipe of tonkotsu, please.

Fukuoka-San (the owner and head chef) is an Osaka native and true artisan of Japanese cuisine. The fresh, authentic sushi here is spectacular for certain, but it is only part of the experience. This is one of the few places I have found in the US where you can get many traditional Japanese dishes such as Tonkatsu Ramen, Miso Saba, Takoyaki, Okonomiyaki, Japanese Curry, Yellowtail Collar, Ankimo, etc... Sit at the counter (more fun!) and try the specials. The key to Japanese food is to trust the chef. We hardly ever look at the menu... The prices are very reasonable for what you get, but are not cheap. Good, fresh fish is pricy. It is worth it. (They do have half-price sushi specials on some weeknights.) When you go into Anaba, look around. Chances are several of the patrons will be Japanese expats looking for a taste of home. My friends from Tokyo make me take them here whenever they come to Knoxville for business. If you want an authentic Japanese meal, you will find it at Anaba...

Great sushi. Better selection and prices than Wasabi and way more relaxed (see my separate review on them). Lots of choices on the menu, both in the types of sushi available as well as the options besides sushi, including several ethnic crossovers from other cuisines. Building doesn't look like much from the street, but inside is nice and the food is exceptional.

So I'm visiting from Sacramento and am a frequent sushi goer and boy was I surprised when I got delicious sushi for 3-5 bucks a roll this far from the ocean! The lunch menu here has a lot of fresh, light but FULL SIZED rolls for very cheap. I tried the Salmon/Avo Roll (fantastic!), Crunchy Ebi, Spider (dinner menu), yellow tail, philly and a few more. The fish was fresh, the rice was just right and the price was perfect! Looking forward to going in at dinner as they do half off one ingredient every night it seems (half off tuna/shrimp/etc) and try some of their fancier rolls. Great find guys!

  • Ann W.

Nice that they had some good Monday night specials! Most tuna rolls were 1/2 off. My colleague and I had the spicy tuna bomber, tuna fire, then a salmon fire and a calamari roll. All the rolls were very fresh. The best were the tuna fire and the calamari. My colleague liked all but the salmon. The service was fine; nothing special. The reason this didn't get 5 stars was the edamame. The bowl seemed to be a mix of fresh and previously cooked beans. Not good.
