If I reviewed this place sooner, I may have given them 4 stars. It's one of the best Chinese buffets in the area, food wise. The restaurant is clean and nice inside and out. 2 visits ago, I went there after a workout and was hungry, and was in the mood for Chinese food....they had what I wanted, but the thing that irritated me....they weren't busy that night, was a weeknight around 8 PM. I'm a single guy. Logic *should* prevail that I don't want to be sat right in front of or next to a couple with a screaming toddler! I went there tonight with my buddy....food was good. Mens' room was a disaster and nearly ruined my appetite. I notified the hostess. Whatever. Their choice of music was WEIRD.....mix of hip hop and other crap....there should only be subtle mood music. It's a good place that has potential to be better. Some aspects are well run.....others the management must be a little clueless. I hope they get it right to make the most of their business.

I'm a connoisseur of sushi in particular and Chinese buffets in general. Correction: I'm a sushi snob. I visited 88 Kitchen one afternoon between lunch and dinner. The restaurant is extremely clean, very large and with courteous wait staff. I've learned that many Chinese people have a difficult time smiling or being friendly, but these folks work hard at it. I was impressed when they brought me a fork that was sealed in a paper sleeve, and the tables were spotless. Trust me, this is unusual for a $7.50 Chinese buffet. About the food: the sushi selection was limited. The salmon nigri was very good, with a surprisingly large cut of salmon. Lots of place will give you a rice serving the size of a golf ball and a salmon slice the size of a dime, but not this place. The rest of the sushi though was just very mediocre. The hot bar of typical buffet food was average. I was pleased to see some things on the bar that other local buffets don't have, including fried catfish and coconut shrimp. On the other hand, many of the chicken and beef-based specialties looked like they were using only rejects-the meat sizes were pitifully small. It was a little humid in the restaurant when I visited; I'm not sure if they're trying to save money or the AC was struggling. It was very pleasant outside, so this was an irritation; the last thing you want is to be enjoying your sushi and smelling the very large, unwashed couple from Westmoreland wearing Dale Earnhardt hats and matching WWF outfits two tables away. That's a lot of complaining for a $7.50 meal. As long as you're not a sushi snob, you'll probably like this place.

My family and I go here for the variety of unhealthy fried foods, Americanized Asian dishes, and sushi bar. We go with the plan to stuff ourselves and pig out. Not a place to go for a "nice dinner," but great place to go for dinner when recovering from a hang over or after a long bad day at work. I love it here.

The food may taste good, but...their score from the health department is 56. That is an improvement from their last score of 42, so it wasn't just a fluke. Sorry--a vast selection of ways to get food poisoning does not make for a good restaurant. Let me be clear: I have been there. It is very pretty. There is a large selection of items to choose from. And the price is reasonable. But it is just plain dangerous. And Yelp really needs to stop filtering out the reviews that mention this!

some people just want to be nice in these reviews lol. this place is good if u want to grub but hibachi in madison square is better. they just dont seem to care much here and its the standard fair.

Classic Asian Buffet With a wide variety of choices. The food on the buffet is good and they have hibachi that is really tasty as well. The sushi is great for a buffet and there is a decent selection to choose from. The food is fresh and they do not let it sit out forever like a lot of buffets do. The health score has come up for those of you who read the review from April 2011. This is the place for quick buffet style dinner...Good food, Friendly Staff,Clean Environment, & a Cool Water Wall too.

Tried 88 Kitchen for the first time today. Great ambience, very clean. Friendly staff. Seated immediately. Got the buffet. Had all the sushi, chicken and food on the buffet I could want for under $10! Made a couple of trips and easily ate $50 worth of food. Highly recommended and will return for sure.

I'm always loud and when I make a mistake, I am just a loud in saying I'm sorry. I owe an apology to some earlier posters. I went to 88 this past Sunday. After noticing that the inspection was not posted I asked around but got no real answer from the employees. But I did see a lot of flies on the cold food - salads counter. Monday morning, I called the Nashville/ Davidson County Health Department. As soon as I began to tell the man about my concerns regarding "a buffet" in the Rivergate area, he laughed and said, "You've been to 88, haven't you". He went on to say that the current score was 41 and the score before that was 61. There is to be a hearing next month to consider their inability or desire to raise their score. I know now the truth about 88 but that doesn't excuse the other oriental buffet in my area that is a pig sty. I guess I'll have to find another place in the area for Sunday Sushi. So that you do not think I am just avenging bad service or such, I have included the link to Metro Health's online scores. Low Scores: Metro Public Health Department go to: /www.health.nashville.gov/ENV/Food/FoodScores/Default.aspx and search the date of 3/30/2010 Direct Quote from website: 88 Kitchen 909 Rivergate Pkwy. Date Inspected: 3/30/2010 Score: 41 Major Violations: * Cooked meats stored in pans on shelf were out of temperature * Food on buffet line out of temperature * Employee not washing hands properly * Chemicals stored with food items

HUGE disappointment! Beautiful entrance and huge variety of food but that's the only positive things I can say. All of the food was dried out like it had been sitting out for hours, food had less flavor than a typical Chinese buffet, Employees were unfriendly & impossible to find to just get a refill on your drink! While the entrance beautiful the dinning area was dated and felt cheap. I went here for my 15th anniversary and left very irritated I spent that much for food I couldn't even choke down. So much for having a nice dinner out.

I had given this place up a couple of years ago due to really poor food, but decided to give another try since it was still around. I was very suprosed by just how good everything was this time around. All the food was kept fresh (for a buffet). they had some fried fish nuggets I was expecting to be typical frozen prepackaged, but there is no way these were pretty packaged. This was some of the freshest fish I've had in quite a while. I will definitely be coming back again.

It's a decent buffet. Plenty of options and friendly enough staff. The decor inside is pleasant and atmosphere is relaxing. They had these unexpected beef tacos and I was so surprises how good they were! Good rice noodles, not too big a fan of the fried rice, it just had a stange taste I couldn't quite figure out. Overall, I'd go back again :)

awesome buffet and the BEST sushi around here on a buffet. best time to go is 4pm when they switch from lunch to dinner and put out all fresh stuff. they have had some health dept bad reviews, but i do not understand why. i have eaten here 2x a week for 2 years and have never gotten sick. love it!

One of the best Chinese Buffets. Friday and Saturday Night can be very busy. The food is generally fresh. Lunch to dinner switch might get you a higher ticket price - those funny "Dinnner Item" tags should go.

Meh. Nothing exciting here. Not the worst, but not the best either. BF and I came here for dinner on a Saturday night. Decent crowd. We're seated immediately. Very Americanized Chinese buffet with your typical dry, tasteless fare. Kinda disappointed by the offerings.

This is the only "Chinese" buffet that I know of in all of Nashville and at least closest to the east side. With that said, its good... for a chinese buffet. They have a great selection of traditional run of the mill Chinese food, sushi, and even "mongolian bbq". They have ice cream too! Nashville is definitely lacking in take out food however, 88 kitchen proves it could move in the right direction.

Tried this new place yesterday for a business lunch. The parking lot was packed. It was a really nice setting with a beautiful wall of falling water just inside the door. They did a great job remodeling the old business. The selection is really overwhelming. I couldn't even consider every option. The food was all hot and quite tasting. I loved the stuffed shrimp. Need to rest my belly and look to return for 3rds and 4ths sometime soon. -------------------------------- After three more visits, I'm done with this place. The service is fine, but the food is only VERY typical of all other buffets, which is letting their facilities run down. For more carefully prepared Chinese food, try China Cottage, which is very close by (next to Panera).

The folks have beautifully decorated the place in Asian themes. There is a lovely stone wall that has a water fountain as you enter the front doors, and its sound is very calming, sets the tone for your meal. There are many buffets, and the restaurant has always been very quiet. It provides a nice place to visit with your company. The servers are all polite, and prompt in their service including drink refills and taking away dirty plates. They also have the largest "salad" bar I've seen including: potato salad, cole slaw, brocolli salad, all the fixings for a garden salad, macaroni salad, all sorts! You will not be disappointed... it is more of an upscale ambience for a down home price.
