Nestled at the end of a gee-normus parking lot on the north side of Dayton, Tennessee, is Bimbo's. Dayton is best known for their unfortunate bit of over-exuberant boosterism (see Monkey Trial) back in 1925, though the event did make a pretty good movie (Inherit the Wind), which is sometimes shown (weather permitting) on 'the' courthouse lawn. Judging from the era and time-frame, Dayton can be forgiven their act of self-promotion, and in many respects it did manage to place the town 'on the map'. Bimbo's will not; at least in a positive respect, which in retrospect pretty well parallels the lasting effect of the Monkey Trial. Generally, any restaurant that offers 'breakfast anytime' will automatically rate three stars; taste unseen. Bimbo's is the exception. I have never eaten in a restaurant that offers such uneven service, food quality, and overall atmosphere. My first visit went splendidly, the coffee was fresh, the food piping hot, the biscuits light and fluffy. The next visit two days later, well. . . . not so good. The coffee was terrible, with a stale, acidic aftertaste. The food was barely warm (and portions much smaller, too) and the biscuits could have been used to train Labrador pups for water fetchin' - 'cept the odds on their floating long enough to be retrieved by even the most exuberant lab-pup were long, indeed! Still, not wanting to totally write-off an establishment carrying such a wonderfully eccentric name, and having a high threshold for 'avoidance learning', I stopped in again, this time for the standard classic, "Country-fried Steak". Now many of you will know that the item called "Country-fried Steak" is really "Chicken-fried Steak", even though it's really not chicken, and not really an identifiable steak. However, when done correctly it's one of the tastiest items found on any lunch or dinner menu. To be done 'correctly' the 'steak' should be lightly breaded, fast fried, and quickly drained of any residual grease that might ruin the salty-floured crispy coating encapsulating the 'steak' item. The accompanying gravy should never be ladled onto the item before serving, lest the salty-floured crispy coating dissolve into a sticky, unpalatable mess. The entire dinner should be served piping hot, so hot in fact, that one might be tempted into gently blowing upon each initial forkful, lest one's tongue be irreparably damaged. The nuances of the serving process might be observed, as well. A smile from the server, though not a requirement, is an added bonus. Points added for not displaying chewing gum or back teeth during the process of over-mastication. Any flies on the table or buzzing about, should be flicked away with an unobtrusive, casual gesture, not through twirling the serving towel about in a lasso-like motion reminiscent of Pecos Pete, Hop-along Cassidy, Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, or any of their various and colorful sidekicks. While I confess to admiring the female form, appropriate apparel should be worn when serving, lest a patron receive a brain-searing optical exposure, which when combined with a cold plated, gummy breaded, dark tasting, entrée of what at one time had the potential of actually being a Country/Chicken- fried Steak. . . . well, just deduct a star for the unwanted floor show. Now, on the positive side of the plate: The restaurant was clean, there was plenty of parking, and the service was at least prompt and colorful, if not stellar. Still, if you're wanting a memorable moment in Dayton, you'd best find it under one of the old oaks on the courthouse lawn, and not at a table or booth in 'Bimbo's!

My friends and I have come here a couple times after going to the range for a little target practice. Bimbo's makes for a decent meal, even if the service leaves something to be desired. There's nothing special about this place. Someone is obviously a fan of the Southeastern Conference, as they have the football helmets of the SEC painted on the side of the building. Since it's in Tennessee, they are first and foremost a Tennessee Vol fan. I had to forgive them for that mistake, they didn't know any better than to paint the building bright orange. Inside, it's always clean. The restrooms are always clean. Tables and chairs and other fixtures are always in good repair. It's a pretty big restaurant and when we show up, it's usually mid-afternoon. That means the place is dead There might be one or two other tables and maybe that's why the service isn't that great. The girls (I've yet to see a male server) seem to be more interested in whatever goes on in the kitchen than anything else. Maybe that's where they socialize. Bimbo's could definitely use a dress code, some of the things the servers wear are ... well, not very appealing. I"m sure they think they look hot, but when your restaurant is called Bimbo's, you probably don't want to look like one. It might not hurt them to smile once in awhile too. The food, on the other hand is pretty decent. Each time I've been, I've had a good meal. The Country Fried Steak is a huge meal. I had a hard time finishing the whole thing when I had it. They do pour on the gravy, so it's definitely not something you'd want to take home and reheat. It would be a mess. But it sure is good when it comes hot from the kitchen. I've also had their chicken tenders, which are also huge! They come out hot and crisp and are really better than some other places I've had chicken tenders. I have yet to have a bad meal here. The food is always hot, and there's always plenty of it. Bimbo's is worth a stop if you happen to be driving by, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get here. If you're in Dayton, and hungry for a lot of food... give it a try!

Really wanted this place to surprise me after reading the reviews but sadly all I can say is I had great service and the employees I came in contact with were very pleasant. The food wasn't bad, but definitely nothing special and a little bland. I had the Sunday special of chicken and dressing. Prices and service were great but the food could use some work. Starting with better/more seasoning.

Three reviews so far, and all had the country fried steak, strange. 1st, we all agree the waitresses do not smile. They aren't rude, just not interested. Noticed this with other customers as well. Now, on to the food. Average. Not bad, not good. The CFS was obviously from a box, but it tasted "ok". The mashed potatoes were cool as soon as they reached my table, but tasted "ok", the beans were unseasoned but "ok". Nothing was horrible, nothing was inedible, everything was just ok. There's nothing wrong with ok, it's just not something to go out of your way for.

We were in town briefly with family, and wanted a quick lunch spot. I had the mushroom Swiss burger, which came with gravy and was absolutely amazing! I even ate half of it later, and it was equally as good as when it was fresh! Others at our table had the salad bar and the Steakhouse Burger, which was delicious as well. We were also on a time crunch, so we were able to get in and out in less than 45 minutes. I would definitely go there again!

Nothing special.food you can make at home even better. The waitress was nice . My biggest problem with the place is that it is nasty God Damn flys everywhere. Spent half the time swatting flys. A place to go if your desperate. Oh ya and the portions are weak. Hillbilly shit hole.
