This place is so wonderful. Google the interesting story behind the Yellow deli and twelve tribes before you go, just so that you know the history. The simple, rustic, cabin-like atmosphere made me feel right at home. The staff is very courteous and friendly. The corn bread was sweet and buttery with a kick of jalapeño. I got a turkey and roast beef sandwich that was packed with a ton of meat and pepper jack cheese. This place has great sandwiches, soup, salads, coffee and smoothies. A fantastic lunch or late night place that is open 24 hours 5 days a week!

Hippie! Now there's a word you don't see very often anymore! However, that is exactly what word comes to mind in this self described "Hippiecrit" environment. They are still living out the days of Woodstock here, complete with a nationwide church that follows the values of the hippie lifestyle. They even have pamphlets to take with you explaining their particular beliefs and an open invitation on their front door to come fellowship and worship with them on days the restaurant is closed. INTERESTING NOTE: They are open 24 hours a day 5 days a week. This is just another faction of the human experience looking to find their truth. FYI, you don't have to be a believer to eat here. I'm grateful they allow outsiders in, because it's quite the experience. ---------- THE EXPERIENCE This may be one of the most unique restaurant experiences you'll ever get to enjoy. I don't think I've been to a more interesting restaurant in my life. Nearly every aspect of this space has vast detail and well thought out quirky touches. You learn about their motto and lifestyles from the murals on the wall and I dare say many of the things posted are thought provoking. Seating is masterfully done. Each area having a unique feel but still being cohesive and connected. At first glance it appears to be tight, but I found our space to be quite roomy once we were seated. Rustic wood and hand-crafted furnishings abound, as well as a nice homey touch of indoor plants. The lower outdoor patio is perfect gathering space and the upper patio feels like you are having lunch in your favorite local gardening center. It is truly impress just how they have divvied up the space. All you bathroom freaks will find the non-gender specific restroom here a real delight. The iron work on the doors, windows and stairs will surely catch your attention, but by far the coolest thing EVER is the dumbwaiter that carries food via a pulley system to the servers on the second floor. I was just too tickled for words when I saw it was not just a novelty, but actually used several times an hour. ---------- THE FOOD So much food, so little time. I had to make an impossible decision and went with my gut which lead me to order the Reuben. BEST.DECISION.EVER. This corned beef classic was soul satisfying. I not only highly recommend it, I dare you to find better in the South. Included are chips. I'm not sure if they are house made, but if they were, they are the best house made chips I've ever experienced. The house made root beer is good, but has a aftertaste similar to diet soda. They also allowed us to sample their Green drink, loaded with all kinds of healthy stuff. Good, but not exactly what I was looking for on this day. It would have probably been outstanding if not for the grapefruit juice add as an ingredient to this drink. My wife had a Cranberry Cashew Salad while our other friends had Deli Pesto Turkey sandwich and the Garden burger with Tomato Basil Soup. Nobody in our group (except me) raved over their food, but all thought the overall experience was between 3.5 - 4 stars. ---------- FINAL THOUGHTS This was our last stop before hitting the road home after a magical visit to Chattanooga, Tennessee. I have little doubt we'll be back to this quaint little city and even less doubt we will be eating here again during our next stay. Hippie lifestyle aside, this is the most comforting dining experience I've had in a long time. A surprisingly enjoyable experience that won't easily be matched.

A sandwich/coffee shop that uses fresh, scratch-made, organic ingredients? I'm intrigued. Possibly run by a cult? I'm there. We made it a *priority* to stop at the Yellow Deli in Chattanooga on a long trip through, after reading extensively about the cultish christian group that runs it. We were not disappointed. Here's why: 1) Undercover culty stuff - If you, like me, want to gawk awkwardly at the beliefs and practices of an unfamiliar religious organization, without being proselytized, Yellow Deli is the perfect setting. Though the restaurant is filled with clues to their lifestyle (everyone wearing home-made skirts/parachute pants cut from similar fabrics, pamphlets stacked at side tables), no one is going to directly discuss spiritual beliefs with you unless you give them some pretty heavy prompting. Play it cool, and the most you'll likely encounter is some extremely friendly conversation. Then read all the rumors online like the voyeur you are! 2) Atmosphere - I try to avoid discussing atmosphere in my reviews because I primarily go to restaurants to eat food, so the quality of that food is my main concern. However, the atmosphere really contributes to the whole Yellow Deli experience, so I feel it can't be ignored. If hobbits built their dwellings above ground (rather than making hobbit holes), then the Yellow Deli would be the perfect setting for a LOTR shire scene. Honestly, you feel like you're stepping out of Chattanooga, and in to a soft, safe place, where only good things can happen. Was that hammer dulcimer music playing in the background? 3) Food - I could have listed it as the first reason to come, because it is tasty enough to warrant a visit on its own. The lady that took our money informed us that our lamb breakfast sandwiches would be served on house-made egg bread rolls. The mate? Specially grown at their Brazillian farm, and not smoked to reduce carcinogenic effects **Mate has been repeatedly shown to cause esophogeal and stomach cancer in several studies. Check on it, health nuts! It's a sometimes drink, not an always drink!** My green tea chai almond milk latte? Made with a special concentrate that is cooked in-house. Of course, there's a wide selection of vegetarian/vegan options, freshly squeezed juices and smoothies, foods adorned with sprouts, etc. Special effort is made to ensure everything is either local, organic, scratch-made, or created at a reputable farm associated with the deli. 4) Hours - The Yellow Deli is open 24/5! So, on most days, even if you're driving through in the middle of the night, you have a place to stop to eat fresh delicious culty food. LOVE IT.

My husband and I both got the chicken pesto sandwich, he gives it 4.5/5, I give it 4/5. It had good flavor but not my favorite. The staff was very laid back and friendly. We were passing through town but it seemed pretty busy (food came out quickly). The iced chai tea was so so, I wouldn't order it again, I'd try it again but would probably get something else.

At the suggestion of friends who knew I was in town, I sought this place out. It felt like a quirky tree-hugging place, but my opinion was swayed by their food. The banana milk was simple, but refreshing. As for the sandwich, wow! The Reuben sliced thin, stacked high on delicious rye bread didn't need any thousand island spread, but you could tell it was a labour of love. The chips were definitely homemade. A brisk carry out business seemed to confirm my suspicion that this place is good. It was worth a visit, and I'll definitely come back. The decor felt exotic, wood carvings and an ambiance not from your typical sandwich shop. The service was warm and friendly, and it overcame my suspicions that this was a cult next to UT-Chattanooga.

Yellow Deli is awesome! It feels like you are walking into a epic hippy mushroom! Everything I have had is delicious. My wife and I come here all the time. It is especially a great place to go late at night with friends to hangout out, play cards and eat. Other times we come here to read for awhile or to surf the web. If you come expect to wait awhile for your food. Definitely not the place to come if you are in a hurry. But why would you want to hurry when you are eating inside a freaking epic hippy mushroom with awesome food!!! Definitely try the Iced common ground.

Sadly I had to leave before my food came out because a waiter working there harassed me about my service dog, he asked me a lot of harsh questions about my condition and tried to separate me from my party and told me I had to sit outside because of my service animal. Both of these things he did are illegal. After I showed the man my dogs service ID he went back inside, only to come out and start harassing my party again, to the point where he started fighting with me. He told me it's not in their policy to serve me because I have a service dog. I'm sure the food is great but if you have a service animal do not come here.

This Yellow Deli is just as awesome as the one I frequent in Boulder, CO, only much bigger, and apparently this location is the original! I ordered one of my favorite sandwiches: The Deli Rose. Some other favorites are the Original Lamb sandwich, the Reuben, and the Cranberry Cashew Salad. This time I also ordered their Green Drink, something I've never noticed on the Boulder Menu. It was like a sweet slushie packed with barley, chard, and other good-for-you veggies and it was only $4!!! $4 for fresh veggie juice!?!?!? That's dirt cheap compared to pretty much every other menu listing for fresh veggie juice that I've ever seen. It tasted like they packed some serious veggies in there too. I remain impressed. The servers are suuuuper nice too. I wish there were more Yellow Delis in every city I visit on the road. The environment is so relaxing. I feel like I'm at home every time I walk inside one.

Very unique atmosphere- feels like you are in The Lord of the Rings movie... The Deli Dose sandwich is so delicious it makes you want to slap your momma. I get to every time. They have these caffeinated drinks called mattes and the chai one tastes amazing. Staff is super sweet but this is not a fast place to get lunch it's more of a take your time kind of place. Great to take out of towners or kids. Not your average deli. The inside is like nothing you've ever seen before and the different levels are so cool. No alcohol - a religious group owns and operates it. Student friendly.

I was passing through and viewing the Frank Lloyd Wright home in the area (a must for any fan of architecture) and ate at the Yellow Deli. The staff wasn't really engaging and waiting for a refill was a little annoying. I had the Garden Burger, which was way overpowered with the vegan garlic spread. More like a 2 star and worth looking around, but not eating.

I have to admit.. I returned because it's a good alternative for a study spot late at night, since they are open 24 hours, 5 days a week. The lighting is a little dim, but the atmosphere is good. The menu is straightforward and simple, which I like. I had the chickamauga (chicken) sandwich on rye bread and I thought it was pretty good. But the lamb sandwich is probably my favorite. I've had their mate teas (peach) and it was delicious as well ( I wish they were refillable). I had a bite of cheesecake and I think I'd pass on that. I still get an odd vibe, but whatever. I'd say the service is inconsistent at most, but friendly. (sometimes I waited 30 min for a sandwich, other times it came out in 10 min). Overall, I think the food and hours are really good. I guess it would be better if there was better lighting in certain areas.

I wish this place was closer b/c sometimes I just get a craving for an Original Lamb sandwich and a hot cup of Common Ground. Yellow Deli has lots of memories for us. Staying up late studying, taking some out of town friends to experience a true sandwich or just a late night snack. You can't go wrong with any of the choices there. The service is a bit slow so don't expect to get a fast meal there. But it all kinda goes with their laid-back outlook on life. So just take it all in!

Everyone is very sweet and they have super mellow music. I don't know anything about this cult, but almost everyone who works here looks like Jerry Garcia and the music sounds like it is straight out of Amish country. It baffles me that people put so much emphasis on the fact that they are a "cult" and that some of them are "weird". For starters, before going to this place you should probably research The Twelve Tribes and see that what they are all about. I had a great experience when I came here and the food was fresh and delicious. I ordered the deli pesto sandwich and it was probably one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The goodness of the pesto, veggies, cheeses and turkey on a soft Keiser roll made for a magnificent sandwich. I accompanied that with a cup of their lentil soup, which was also delicious. For dessert, I indulged in their banana bread "deluxe" and it was just so addicting, delicious and fresh! They have access to parking (more parking about half a block away), a lot of seating, great coffee and great prices. Can't wait to go back!

The Yellow Deli is simply transcendent. I get so enthusiastic it and I miss living in Chattanooga (specifically downtown close enough to where I could walk) just for Yel Del alone! The interior of the restaurant is cozy, rustic and dimly lit, kind of like being inside a giant tree house since everything is hand made from sustainable wood. The oil lamps and traditional folk music only add to the experience! I suggest walking up the wooden spiral staircase to the upper level and get a better look at the amazing hippie mural spanning the wall. Once you've grabbed a seat, try not to drool over the menu, which consists of sandwiches (you can also mix and match your own), salads, soups, desserts and breakfast. Don't forget a delicious smoothie, fruit juice, yerba mate, tea or coffee to go along with your meal. There is something incredibly satisfying and warming about their food - I always leave feeling full, but never weighed down. The prices are totally cheap and the best part is that it's open 24/5 - it closes on Friday night at 5pm and opens back up on Saunday at 5pm. This is great for all of the UTC kids! I do want to briefly talk about the accusations of Yellow Deli as a "cult." Yes, it's true, the restaurant is run by a Christian hippie intentional community that is based outside of Chattanooga. The wait staff are part of the commune - the men have long hair and beards, and the women have long hair, wear skirts, and forgo make up, and they are all super spacey (yet friendly). My friends and I used to joke that the extreme spaciness was due to brainwashing of the cult, but I obviously don't know if that's true or not. I don't really care if they're a cult or not, since they seem to have really positive intentions and offer cheap, wholesome, delicious food in a beautiful atmosphere!

While this update doesn't directly address the specifics of my latest visit, it does talk about my recent experience and, in my opinion, some things that potential customers have the right to know about the Yellow Deli. I went back again on Friday for lunch, and had the tomato bisque and some artisan bread. Interested in some some reading material as I was dining alone (and feeling curious to know a bit more about these people), I picked up one of their publications that they offer for free. What I read was... very off-putting, to say the least. Now, I like to be tolerant of people's differing views even if I think they're misguided, so I decided to do some research when I got home just in case I was misunderstanding something. Maybe this was just one guy's opinion - every group has it's fanatics, right? Turns out that the people who own the Yellow Deli belong to what can quite reasonably be described as an extreme fundamentalist Christian cult (known as the "Twelve Tribes movement"). The internet is awash with stories of survivors who claim they are dangerously abusive - including some from people who left the Chattanooga group. I have nothing against their philosophy of simple living. In a way, it's admirable, and I'm sure that's how they capture people's interest. I don't even care if their theology is wacky - I believe in freedom of religion. They're also allowed to use their restaurant to introduce people to their beliefs (although they really ought to be more honest about themselves and stop trying to lure vulnerable people into their group by pretending to be non-judgmental, peace-and-love hippies). I do, however, have a SERIOUS problem with the racism, misogyny, and child abuse that ex-members claim is endemic to their subculture. As a survivor of a spiritually abusive church myself, I empathize with their experience. I don't care about philosophical differences, but I care about people getting hurt. I don't want to give the Yellow Deli my money if it means enabling this sort of thing. From what I've read they aren't even paid for their individual labor; everything goes straight to the leaders of their religious organization who call the shots in how everything is re-distributed. I guess you could expect that much from a commune, but let it be known that there's not any point in tipping. Take a good look at the wait staff next time you visit. Once I had the blinders off and could see past the rustic charm, it was pretty obvious the restaurant operates on indentured servitude. The "employees" don't have much in the way of social skills and most of them seem extremely miserable. Nobody bothered to smile or engage in friendly chatting until my server saw me reading their magazine - then his personality did a complete 360 and he started getting a little pushy in an attempt to prosthelytize. My girlfriend used to live in Chattanooga, and the Yellow Deli is the number one thing I miss about visiting... There is not one single item on the menu that's not delicous. The kettle cooked chips are great paired with their sandwiches. Leave some space for their fruit-centric desserts, too!
Catherine T is totally right on about the freaking awesome dumbwaiter and the friendly -ahem - commune (is that the PC term?) that operates the Yellow Deli. This is a delightful place to sip tea, get online and hang for hours, which is why it seems to be very popular with the UTC student crowd. Also, it is open 24 hours Sunday evening through Friday evening. What you may not expect is that the YD is quite sumptuous inside. The decor is very woodsy and warm. The second floor lounge is outfitted with super comfy leather couches and good lighting for reading and writing. The restrooms are clean and, well, pretty. There is a lovely terraced garden that I am eager to use in cooler weather. I've only tried one sandwich (hummus and veggies on a soft bun). It was good, not spectacular, but solid. The tea selection includes Celestial Seasonings and Yerba Mate, which is their specialty. I look forward to trying more of the cuisine, but the atmosphere alone will keep me coming back.

Pros: As unique as a restaurant could possibly be, feels like it's own little world, wonderful food, good week hours, loads of story behind it. Cons: Servers can be very...odd (not always in a bad way, but sometimes it's disconcerting). No weekends. Horrible parking. In short, it's absolutely perfect for UTC students and tourists. And the Deli Rose? Best sandwich in the world.

The food is great although the menu is limited to soups and sandwiches, but everything is fresh and flavorful. The price point isn't the greatest but it's reasonable and the atmosphere makes up for any of its shortcomings. There's no other coffee shop/ restaurant like it in town. As you first enter, the sound of soft folk style music will take you back to a simpler time. Then you enter, and you are overwhelmed by the handmade, natural environmentally conscious design and construction of the deli. You have the option of sitting upstairs, or outside on the patio, which is beautifully designed as well. The food is equally as amazing. The sandwiches are some of the best in town, with such specialties as the deli rose, or the lamb you really can't go wrong. Don't forget to get a great juice or mate, I always find myself getting a papaya mate either with my meal or two of them to go as I pass. And end the whole thing with a dessert that will make you think twice about thinking once about questioning getting one.

I adore this place. Cute tattooo'd waitresses, crazy hippie treehouse decor, fantastic homemade chai tea, delicious sandwiches and soups. What's there not to like. I didn't want to go back to work after lunch. I just wanted to sit and read and have another cup (or three) of chai. Oh well. If I make it back again (I hope I do), they could earn a five.

If you're looking for a small little sandwich shop that has real character, unlike a chain shop like Subway or Panera, then the Yellow Deli is your place. Yes, it's run by a christian cult with some strange beliefs, but the waiters won't talk to you about it unless you ask them specifically, in which case they'll be glad to talk your ear off. The food is simply excellent. The weird hippie murals filled with rants about consumerist society,and the macrame decorations must make the sandwiches taste better. If you don't mind supporting an organization with unusual religious beliefs, then the Yellow Deli is worth stopping by if you're passing through Chattanooga. It's not far off the interstate, but easy to miss.

The yellow deli has a beautiful atmosphere, and excellent food. My particular favorite is the cranberry cashew salad . I also adore the hibiscus cooler and this is the only place that you can get it. On the gluten side of things the sweet potato cake is divine as is the raisin bread that comes with their stews. Unfortunately , the service is extremely slow and the staff is not at all knowledgeable about food allergies. This is a place that I love to go when I want to sip some mate' and read but this is not a quick dining restaurant.

I'm in love with this place (even though I've only been once and live in Athens, GA). The interior is gorgeous. The banana milk is yummy beyond belief (I don't even like bananas that much), and the cream cheese pie is divine. The music was very soothing and they provide shuttle service if the small parking lot in the back is full. Everyone is very friendly and there's a freaking dumbwaiter, which is awesome!! It is run by a cult (I don't know think that's the p.c. term, but whatever), which is kind of weird, but they are all very nice and they don't try to convert you as you eat.

This place is so wonderful. Google the interesting story behind the Yellow deli and twelve tribes before you go, just so that you know the history. The simple, rustic, cabin-like atmosphere made me feel right at home. The staff is very courteous and friendly. The corn bread was sweet and buttery with a kick of jalapeño. I got a turkey and roast beef sandwich that was packed with a ton of meat and pepper jack cheese. This place has great sandwiches, soup, salads, coffee and smoothies. A fantastic lunch or late night place that is open 24 hours 5 days a week!

Hippie! Now there's a word you don't see very often anymore! However, that is exactly what word comes to mind in this self described "Hippiecrit" environment. They are still living out the days of Woodstock here, complete with a nationwide church that follows the values of the hippie lifestyle. They even have pamphlets to take with you explaining their particular beliefs and an open invitation on their front door to come fellowship and worship with them on days the restaurant is closed. INTERESTING NOTE: They are open 24 hours a day 5 days a week. This is just another faction of the human experience looking to find their truth. FYI, you don't have to be a believer to eat here. I'm grateful they allow outsiders in, because it's quite the experience. ---------- THE EXPERIENCE This may be one of the most unique restaurant experiences you'll ever get to enjoy. I don't think I've been to a more interesting restaurant in my life. Nearly every aspect of this space has vast detail and well thought out quirky touches. You learn about their motto and lifestyles from the murals on the wall and I dare say many of the things posted are thought provoking. Seating is masterfully done. Each area having a unique feel but still being cohesive and connected. At first glance it appears to be tight, but I found our space to be quite roomy once we were seated. Rustic wood and hand-crafted furnishings abound, as well as a nice homey touch of indoor plants. The lower outdoor patio is perfect gathering space and the upper patio feels like you are having lunch in your favorite local gardening center. It is truly impress just how they have divvied up the space. All you bathroom freaks will find the non-gender specific restroom here a real delight. The iron work on the doors, windows and stairs will surely catch your attention, but by far the coolest thing EVER is the dumbwaiter that carries food via a pulley system to the servers on the second floor. I was just too tickled for words when I saw it was not just a novelty, but actually used several times an hour. ---------- THE FOOD So much food, so little time. I had to make an impossible decision and went with my gut which lead me to order the Reuben. BEST.DECISION.EVER. This corned beef classic was soul satisfying. I not only highly recommend it, I dare you to find better in the South. Included are chips. I'm not sure if they are house made, but if they were, they are the best house made chips I've ever experienced. The house made root beer is good, but has a aftertaste similar to diet soda. They also allowed us to sample their Green drink, loaded with all kinds of healthy stuff. Good, but not exactly what I was looking for on this day. It would have probably been outstanding if not for the grapefruit juice add as an ingredient to this drink. My wife had a Cranberry Cashew Salad while our other friends had Deli Pesto Turkey sandwich and the Garden burger with Tomato Basil Soup. Nobody in our group (except me) raved over their food, but all thought the overall experience was between 3.5 - 4 stars. ---------- FINAL THOUGHTS This was our last stop before hitting the road home after a magical visit to Chattanooga, Tennessee. I have little doubt we'll be back to this quaint little city and even less doubt we will be eating here again during our next stay. Hippie lifestyle aside, this is the most comforting dining experience I've had in a long time. A surprisingly enjoyable experience that won't easily be matched.

A sandwich/coffee shop that uses fresh, scratch-made, organic ingredients? I'm intrigued. Possibly run by a cult? I'm there. We made it a *priority* to stop at the Yellow Deli in Chattanooga on a long trip through, after reading extensively about the cultish christian group that runs it. We were not disappointed. Here's why: 1) Undercover culty stuff - If you, like me, want to gawk awkwardly at the beliefs and practices of an unfamiliar religious organization, without being proselytized, Yellow Deli is the perfect setting. Though the restaurant is filled with clues to their lifestyle (everyone wearing home-made skirts/parachute pants cut from similar fabrics, pamphlets stacked at side tables), no one is going to directly discuss spiritual beliefs with you unless you give them some pretty heavy prompting. Play it cool, and the most you'll likely encounter is some extremely friendly conversation. Then read all the rumors online like the voyeur you are! 2) Atmosphere - I try to avoid discussing atmosphere in my reviews because I primarily go to restaurants to eat food, so the quality of that food is my main concern. However, the atmosphere really contributes to the whole Yellow Deli experience, so I feel it can't be ignored. If hobbits built their dwellings above ground (rather than making hobbit holes), then the Yellow Deli would be the perfect setting for a LOTR shire scene. Honestly, you feel like you're stepping out of Chattanooga, and in to a soft, safe place, where only good things can happen. Was that hammer dulcimer music playing in the background? 3) Food - I could have listed it as the first reason to come, because it is tasty enough to warrant a visit on its own. The lady that took our money informed us that our lamb breakfast sandwiches would be served on house-made egg bread rolls. The mate? Specially grown at their Brazillian farm, and not smoked to reduce carcinogenic effects **Mate has been repeatedly shown to cause esophogeal and stomach cancer in several studies. Check on it, health nuts! It's a sometimes drink, not an always drink!** My green tea chai almond milk latte? Made with a special concentrate that is cooked in-house. Of course, there's a wide selection of vegetarian/vegan options, freshly squeezed juices and smoothies, foods adorned with sprouts, etc. Special effort is made to ensure everything is either local, organic, scratch-made, or created at a reputable farm associated with the deli. 4) Hours - The Yellow Deli is open 24/5! So, on most days, even if you're driving through in the middle of the night, you have a place to stop to eat fresh delicious culty food. LOVE IT.

My husband and I both got the chicken pesto sandwich, he gives it 4.5/5, I give it 4/5. It had good flavor but not my favorite. The staff was very laid back and friendly. We were passing through town but it seemed pretty busy (food came out quickly). The iced chai tea was so so, I wouldn't order it again, I'd try it again but would probably get something else.

At the suggestion of friends who knew I was in town, I sought this place out. It felt like a quirky tree-hugging place, but my opinion was swayed by their food. The banana milk was simple, but refreshing. As for the sandwich, wow! The Reuben sliced thin, stacked high on delicious rye bread didn't need any thousand island spread, but you could tell it was a labour of love. The chips were definitely homemade. A brisk carry out business seemed to confirm my suspicion that this place is good. It was worth a visit, and I'll definitely come back. The decor felt exotic, wood carvings and an ambiance not from your typical sandwich shop. The service was warm and friendly, and it overcame my suspicions that this was a cult next to UT-Chattanooga.

Yellow Deli is awesome! It feels like you are walking into a epic hippy mushroom! Everything I have had is delicious. My wife and I come here all the time. It is especially a great place to go late at night with friends to hangout out, play cards and eat. Other times we come here to read for awhile or to surf the web. If you come expect to wait awhile for your food. Definitely not the place to come if you are in a hurry. But why would you want to hurry when you are eating inside a freaking epic hippy mushroom with awesome food!!! Definitely try the Iced common ground.

Sadly I had to leave before my food came out because a waiter working there harassed me about my service dog, he asked me a lot of harsh questions about my condition and tried to separate me from my party and told me I had to sit outside because of my service animal. Both of these things he did are illegal. After I showed the man my dogs service ID he went back inside, only to come out and start harassing my party again, to the point where he started fighting with me. He told me it's not in their policy to serve me because I have a service dog. I'm sure the food is great but if you have a service animal do not come here.

This Yellow Deli is just as awesome as the one I frequent in Boulder, CO, only much bigger, and apparently this location is the original! I ordered one of my favorite sandwiches: The Deli Rose. Some other favorites are the Original Lamb sandwich, the Reuben, and the Cranberry Cashew Salad. This time I also ordered their Green Drink, something I've never noticed on the Boulder Menu. It was like a sweet slushie packed with barley, chard, and other good-for-you veggies and it was only $4!!! $4 for fresh veggie juice!?!?!? That's dirt cheap compared to pretty much every other menu listing for fresh veggie juice that I've ever seen. It tasted like they packed some serious veggies in there too. I remain impressed. The servers are suuuuper nice too. I wish there were more Yellow Delis in every city I visit on the road. The environment is so relaxing. I feel like I'm at home every time I walk inside one.

Very unique atmosphere- feels like you are in The Lord of the Rings movie... The Deli Dose sandwich is so delicious it makes you want to slap your momma. I get to every time. They have these caffeinated drinks called mattes and the chai one tastes amazing. Staff is super sweet but this is not a fast place to get lunch it's more of a take your time kind of place. Great to take out of towners or kids. Not your average deli. The inside is like nothing you've ever seen before and the different levels are so cool. No alcohol - a religious group owns and operates it. Student friendly.

Such a great, low cost place to eat. The entire place is mellow and the service is great. The Deli Pesto sandwich is amazing, everything is made from scratch! I'm giving it a 3 only because the atmosphere was pretty eclectic and earthy. Little parking and a little pricy. I was passing through and viewing the Frank Lloyd Wright home in the area (a must for any fan of architecture) and ate at the Yellow Deli. The staff wasn't really engaging and waiting for a refill was a little annoying. I had the Garden Burger, which was way overpowered with the vegan garlic spread. More like a 2 star and worth looking around, but not eating.

I love this place. The food is always fresh & absolutely delicious, the atmosphere is cozy & real (the kind other restaurants spend big money to create). I have to admit.. I returned because it's a good alternative for a study spot late at night, since they are open 24 hours, 5 days a week. The lighting is a little dim, but the atmosphere is good. The menu is straightforward and simple, which I like. I had the chickamauga (chicken) sandwich on rye bread and I thought it was pretty good. But the lamb sandwich is probably my favorite. I've had their mate teas (peach) and it was delicious as well ( I wish they were refillable). I had a bite of cheesecake and I think I'd pass on that. I still get an odd vibe, but whatever. I'd say the service is inconsistent at most, but friendly. (sometimes I waited 30 min for a sandwich, other times it came out in 10 min). Overall, I think the food and hours are really good. I guess it would be better if there was better lighting in certain areas.

I wish this place was closer b/c sometimes I just get a craving for an Original Lamb sandwich and a hot cup of Common Ground. Yellow Deli has lots of memories for us. Staying up late studying, taking some out of town friends to experience a true sandwich or just a late night snack. You can't go wrong with any of the choices there. The service is a bit slow so don't expect to get a fast meal there. But it all kinda goes with their laid-back outlook on life. So just take it all in!

Everyone is very sweet and they have super mellow music. I don't know anything about this cult, but almost everyone who works here looks like Jerry Garcia and the music sounds like it is straight out of Amish country. It all vibes together to create a great ambiance. They have a simple menu of delicious soups, sandwiches, and salads! The iced green mate is delightful! Even better, the upstairs tables have outlets and the free wifi is outstanding!

It baffles me that people put so much emphasis on the fact that they are a "cult" and that some of them are "weird". For starters, before going to this place you should probably research The Twelve Tribes and see that what they are all about. I had a great experience when I came here and the food was fresh and delicious. I ordered the deli pesto sandwich and it was probably one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The goodness of the pesto, veggies, cheeses and turkey on a soft Keiser roll made for a magnificent sandwich. I accompanied that with a cup of their lentil soup, which was also delicious. For dessert, I indulged in their banana bread "deluxe" and it was just so addicting, delicious and fresh! They have access to parking (more parking about half a block away), a lot of seating, great coffee and great prices. Can't wait to go back!

This place was weirdly awesome! Was looking for a sandwich shop for a quick lunch and stumbled upon this place. Was greeted at the door by an older gentleman who seated us right away and upon finding out it was our first time showed some of his favorite menu items to try. Ordered one of his suggestions, The Deli Rose, and it was awesome! This place is situated right next to the local college and would be the perfect place to study, especially since their open 24/5. Next time I'm in town I will definitely be back to try the coffee

The Yellow Deli is simply transcendent. I get so enthusiastic it and I miss living in Chattanooga (specifically downtown close enough to where I could walk) just for Yel Del alone! The interior of the restaurant is cozy, rustic and dimly lit, kind of like being inside a giant tree house since everything is hand made from sustainable wood. The oil lamps and traditional folk music only add to the experience! I suggest walking up the wooden spiral staircase to the upper level and get a better look at the amazing hippie mural spanning the wall. Once you've grabbed a seat, try not to drool over the menu, which consists of sandwiches (you can also mix and match your own), salads, soups, desserts and breakfast. Don't forget a delicious smoothie, fruit juice, yerba mate, tea or coffee to go along with your meal. There is something incredibly satisfying and warming about their food - I always leave feeling full, but never weighed down. The prices are totally cheap and the best part is that it's open 24/5 - it closes on Friday night at 5pm and opens back up on Saunday at 5pm. This is great for all of the UTC kids! I do want to briefly talk about the accusations of Yellow Deli as a "cult." Yes, it's true, the restaurant is run by a Christian hippie intentional community that is based outside of Chattanooga. The wait staff are part of the commune - the men have long hair and beards, and the women have long hair, wear skirts, and forgo make up, and they are all super spacey (yet friendly). My friends and I used to joke that the extreme spaciness was due to brainwashing of the cult, but I obviously don't know if that's true or not. I don't really care if they're a cult or not, since they seem to have really positive intentions and offer cheap, wholesome, delicious food in a beautiful atmosphere!

I'm in a touring band from South Texas and this is our 4th time coming here. We probably keep booking our tours through Chattanooga just so we can eat here. It feels like you're at the Shire from LOTR, the service is excellent, it's open 24/5, and the food is absolutely amazing. We all have our favorites that we get every time. Mine is the Breakfast Lambwich. The prices aren't cheap but they're not crazy and absolutely worth it. The Deli Rose is another band favorite. Their green maté is amazing with 2 spoons of local honey and 1 cream. The chili with jalapeño cheese cornbread is another favorite. Also, the sweet potato pound cake is delicious. The people here are super nice and not what you'd expect from an occult. The first time we came, we told them we were on the road and they gifted us with a few maté energy bars that were delicious! We love this place and will always come back. I wish there was one in South Texas.

Spoiler warning: if you are a vegan or a glu-tard like myself, you probably won't find much worth raving about here. Don't let the gorgeous dećor and woodsy façade fool you: THIS IS A DELI. Once upon a time, my partner and I planned a trip to Chattanooga with the intentions of stopping at this odd destination after hearing some of the bizarre tales surrounding the cult that owns this chain of food service establishments. We poked the address into our GPS and were on our way! Seeing the deli in our sights, a quick turn down an alleyway (as directed by a parking sign) led us down another narrow alleyway where we were met by a smiling man sitting in a shed. We were directed to a magical land far away; the neighboring parking lot. To our surprise, another smiling man was waiting in a beaten blue mini-van embossed with a glossed "The Yellow Deli" sign on the side; a shuttle. We declined the ride, as we had been sitting in the car for two hours and wished to stretch our legs on the short walk. Climbing the back staircase to the deli, we entered a magical treehouse-esque atmosphere nothing short of a "hobbit-hole". We waited; confused for a moment as a near emotionless(maybe she was having a bad day) woman dressed in flowy gypsy-pants (later noted as what seems to have been the cult's fashion-wardrobe)led us to a table seated in front of a gigantic mural that appeared to be painted by an artist on acid and a fifth-grade reading level. I'm certain we irritated the waitress with pestering questions about what were the ingredients in certain sandwiches, and if they were house-made. Even she seemed hesitant about what was in the dressings. We both ordered the garden burgers without bread, and I ordered a maté (which I later learned was from their Brazilian Maté-farm.) Redeeming qualities: maté As we waited, the atmosphere felt very anxiety-inducing, even though there were probably five customers in the whole place. The waitress also forgot my honey, and I was sad. When the burgers arrived, our worst fears were realized: the burgers she talked up were in fact "Gardenburger (s) tm" The frozen microwave kind. We frowned. The dressing on the veggie-bowl side was evidently from a bottle, and the veggies were not fresh at all. Everything was very processed. Sadfaces. The experience was definitely worth it for the laughs, but all in all, the options available to gluten-free vegans were not worth paying eight dollars for. I'm sure if you could eat bread and meat, you'd find this place food-tastic! Google this place! They are so interesting! And if you're nice, they will give you pamphlets.

This place is WIIIILLLDDD. The decor is something out of an acid trip and the place is run by some kind of group-harmony-peace-love-collective/commune (I was once invited to one of their weddings by a waitress, sadly I could not attend). But the food is top notch. Delicious sandwiches, lots of options, I've never had anything I didn't like. Get a smoothie too!

It has to be one of my favorite restaurants in the area. Even though they are a christian cult, I don't see how that would ever effect the food or their customer service. They have always been very sweet, and the food is phenomenal. I always get the same thing...(Chicken sandwich w/a honey bun for desert) The only thing I would complain about is the rest being closed on Friday afternoon and all day Saturday! :) Great food, I highly recommend.

While this update doesn't directly address the specifics of my latest visit, it does talk about my recent experience and, in my opinion, some things that potential customers have the right to know about the Yellow Deli. I went back again on Friday for lunch, and had the tomato bisque and some artisan bread. Interested in some some reading material as I was dining alone (and feeling curious to know a bit more about these people), I picked up one of their publications that they offer for free. What I read was... very off-putting, to say the least. Now, I like to be tolerant of people's differing views even if I think they're misguided, so I decided to do some research when I got home just in case I was misunderstanding something. Maybe this was just one guy's opinion - every group has it's fanatics, right? Turns out that the people who own the Yellow Deli belong to what can quite reasonably be described as an extreme fundamentalist Christian cult (known as the "Twelve Tribes movement"). The internet is awash with stories of survivors who claim they are dangerously abusive - including some from people who left the Chattanooga group. I have nothing against their philosophy of simple living. In a way, it's admirable, and I'm sure that's how they capture people's interest. I don't even care if their theology is wacky - I believe in freedom of religion. They're also allowed to use their restaurant to introduce people to their beliefs (although they really ought to be more honest about themselves and stop trying to lure vulnerable people into their group by pretending to be non-judgmental, peace-and-love hippies). I do, however, have a SERIOUS problem with the racism, misogyny, and child abuse that ex-members claim is endemic to their subculture. As a survivor of a spiritually abusive church myself, I empathize with their experience. I don't care about philosophical differences, but I care about people getting hurt. I don't want to give the Yellow Deli my money if it means enabling this sort of thing. From what I've read they aren't even paid for their individual labor; everything goes straight to the leaders of their religious organization who call the shots in how everything is re-distributed. I guess you could expect that much from a commune, but let it be known that there's not any point in tipping. Take a good look at the wait staff next time you visit. Once I had the blinders off and could see past the rustic charm, it was pretty obvious the restaurant operates on indentured servitude. The "employees" don't have much in the way of social skills and most of them seem extremely miserable. Nobody bothered to smile or engage in friendly chatting until my server saw me reading their magazine - then his personality did a complete 360 and he started getting a little pushy in an attempt to prosthelytize. Yiiiiiiikes. I'm never visiting again and they're not getting any more of my money. Please don't visit The Yellow Deli if you value being an ethical consumer.

This restaurant has a very interesting vibe. Apparently this place is a co-op. Their hot sandwich is delicious. Our waiter is very fun to talk to. If I am in town, I'll definitely come back.

My girlfriend used to live in Chattanooga, and the Yellow Deli is the number one thing I miss about visiting... There is not one single item on the menu that's not delicous. The kettle cooked chips are great paired with their sandwiches. Leave some space for their fruit-centric desserts, too!

Let's dish about the Yellow Deli. Nestled in the University of Tennessee Chattanooga campus lies the enchanted Yellow Deli. The true Yellow Deli experience begins as you approach the building. I recently visited on a Sunday evening and was immediately drawn in by the gas lit lamps, lush trees, traditional Irish folk music and warm light escaping through the windows. Think of a woodcutter's cabin in a glen. The ambiance of the entire restaurant is a mixture of wood and wrought iron banisters and a spiral staircase leading to the second floor. It is clear that attention to detail was a high priority integrating personality from the floor to the ceiling. Traditional elements such as a lift to transport food and beverages between floors, a hand powered coffee bean grinder, hand drawn menu art and bushel baskets converted into lamp shades over the tables made me fall in love with the Yellow Deli and this precedes tasting their food. The meal started with the soup of the day which was a cup Potato Chowder served in a literal ceramic cup covered in scallions and cheese with a slice of crispy and buttered sourdough on the side. The Potato Chowder was smooth with seductive flavors that sooths the body on the coldest fall or winter evening. For the main course I ordered one of their specialty sandwiches, the Yellow Submarine. WOW. Each bite incorporated all of the delicious flavors from a home grown garden minus the soil. A sunflower seeded sub roll was piled with hummus, yellow tomato, sprouts, lettuce, and special sauce. It was fresh and incredibly affordable. The Deli Rose was also ordered. The only way I can describe this classic meaty sandwich is to relate it to a sandwich I picture a high rise steel worker would pull out of his aluminum lunch box while sitting on a beam hundreds of feet in the air. It was a scrumptious battle between the roast beef and corned beef on the onion roll with all of the fixings slowly dripping out of the bottom of the sandwich. This sandwich was paired with the natural Root Beer soda in a glass mug. To end the meal, the house favorite cream cheese pie with strawberries and honey on a graham cracker crust was ordered. This pièce de résistance was smooth and creamy and phenomenal. Overall the total for the meal was under $25.00 with tax. Honestly, I wish I would have more time to try their other sandwiches, salads and soups in addition to the dozen of teas and coffee offerings.

Catherine T is totally right on about the freaking awesome dumbwaiter and the friendly -ahem - commune (is that the PC term?) that operates the Yellow Deli. This is a delightful place to sip tea, get online and hang for hours, which is why it seems to be very popular with the UTC student crowd. Also, it is open 24 hours Sunday evening through Friday evening. What you may not expect is that the YD is quite sumptuous inside. The decor is very woodsy and warm. The second floor lounge is outfitted with super comfy leather couches and good lighting for reading and writing. The restrooms are clean and, well, pretty. There is a lovely terraced garden that I am eager to use in cooler weather. I've only tried one sandwich (hummus and veggies on a soft bun). It was good, not spectacular, but solid. The tea selection includes Celestial Seasonings and Yerba Mate, which is their specialty. I look forward to trying more of the cuisine, but the atmosphere alone will keep me coming back.

Pros: As unique as a restaurant could possibly be, feels like it's own little world, wonderful food, good week hours, loads of story behind it. Cons: Servers can be very...odd (not always in a bad way, but sometimes it's disconcerting). No weekends. Horrible parking. In short, it's absolutely perfect for UTC students and tourists. And the Deli Rose? Best sandwich in the world.

The food is great although the menu is limited to soups and sandwiches, but everything is fresh and flavorful. The price point isn't the greatest but it's reasonable and the atmosphere makes up for any of its shortcomings. There's no other coffee shop/ restaurant like it in town. I would definitely recommend it. I come here regularly.

As you first enter, the sound of soft folk style music will take you back to a simpler time. Then you enter, and you are overwhelmed by the handmade, natural environmentally conscious design and construction of the deli. You have the option of sitting upstairs, or outside on the patio, which is beautifully designed as well. The food is equally as amazing. The sandwiches are some of the best in town, with such specialties as the deli rose, or the lamb you really can't go wrong. Don't forget to get a great juice or mate, I always find myself getting a papaya mate either with my meal or two of them to go as I pass. And end the whole thing with a dessert that will make you think twice about thinking once about questioning getting one.

I adore this place. Cute tattooo'd waitresses, crazy hippie treehouse decor, fantastic homemade chai tea, delicious sandwiches and soups. What's there not to like. I didn't want to go back to work after lunch. I just wanted to sit and read and have another cup (or three) of chai. Oh well. If I make it back again (I hope I do), they could earn a five.

If you're looking for a small little sandwich shop that has real character, unlike a chain shop like Subway or Panera, then the Yellow Deli is your place. Yes, it's run by a christian cult with some strange beliefs, but the waiters won't talk to you about it unless you ask them specifically, in which case they'll be glad to talk your ear off. The food is simply excellent. The weird hippie murals filled with rants about consumerist society,and the macrame decorations must make the sandwiches taste better. If you don't mind supporting an organization with unusual religious beliefs, then the Yellow Deli is worth stopping by if you're passing through Chattanooga. It's not far off the interstate, but easy to miss.

The yellow deli has a beautiful atmosphere, and excellent food. My particular favorite is the cranberry cashew salad . I also adore the hibiscus cooler and this is the only place that you can get it. On the gluten side of things the sweet potato cake is divine as is the raisin bread that comes with their stews. Unfortunately , the service is extremely slow and the staff is not at all knowledgeable about food allergies. This is a place that I love to go when I want to sip some mate' and read but this is not a quick dining restaurant.

I'm in love with this place (even though I've only been once and live in Athens, GA). The interior is gorgeous. The banana milk is yummy beyond belief (I don't even like bananas that much), and the cream cheese pie is divine. The music was very soothing and they provide shuttle service if the small parking lot in the back is full. Everyone is very friendly and there's a freaking dumbwaiter, which is awesome!! It is run by a cult (I don't know think that's the p.c. term, but whatever), which is kind of weird, but they are all very nice and they don't try to convert you as you eat.
