We ate lunch here with three little kids and four adults. The staff was very flexible and catered to our kiddos that were a bit wild. Several adults had the special of the day and were pleased. The sides were really good. The cheese grits a must. Fried Green tomatoes were middle of the road. I ordered the Sonoma Salad and it was fantastic. Fresh veggies and grilled chicken prepped just right. Now the desserts you MUST try. We ordered nearly all of them with our large group. The Nana pudding was phenomenal. Key lime pie is really a tart/tiny. The Chocolate cake was huge/can share with another adult. We will be back on our next trip to Chattanooga.

Special of the day was chicken and cheese casserole which was as fantastic as the peanut butter pie. Many at our tale had the banana pudding and were loving it.

While Southern Star usually has decent food if you dine in - they tend to not care very much about their take out customers. The salads are often wilted or only have very little lettuce. For $9 I would like more than 5 pieces of rotten lettuce. Skip this place and head to Tazikis where the salads are always fresh and large.

This is a great casual place to eat. The fried squash was just amazing and the key lime pie is to die for!!!! However the cornbread seemed to me more like fried cornmeal and it left something to be desired. Overall really enjoyed my experience!

YUM! This place was so awesome. Was staying across street at Chattanoogan, this place is within walking distance and was so fabulous. Quick seating, service and great food!

Places like SS have a great formula: Disguise yourselves as country cooking but serve foodservice stuff out of a can. Pretty sure SS uses the same forumula. I got the blue plate for $9 tonight. Fried catfish. Hot, but not good. My sides were sweet potato souffle (sp), tomatoes and rice, and cheese grits. All of the sides were OK, but nothing was hot. I hate sending stuff back to heat up, so I just ate it. Also got the nanner pudding. Not bad. Also, I do not get their paper-thin corbread pancakes. You can't butter them, you can't dip them. You can't do anything with them. They taste like old grease. Why bother? How about some nice rolls or actual cornbread? Anyhow, I hadn't been to SS in eight years. it will be longer than 8 years for me to return to this place. As in...never.

If you like Southern cooking on the light side, you're likely to become a regular. Fresh veggies with just a touch of flavor added are a high point. For best results, ignore the menu and order off the blackboards - meat and three, daily special, veggie plate, and desserts are reliably good. And they come quickly.

Not going back. There are many good options in town. This isn't one. The food was fair, at best.

This place is a great example of great comfort food. If friends or family are visiting downtown Chattanooga l always recommend this outstanding restaurant.

What's not to love! Go with the daily specials on the caulk board and you won't be sorry. Five of us went for lunch and all went for the meatloaf. We were not disappointed! The squash casserole was delish!

I was recommended this restaurant by one of the college Counselors at a school that I visited today. I must say that it did not disappoint. I had the shrimp and grits and the cornbread had a kick to it that intrigued me. All in all, I would highly recommend this place to anyone in Chattanooga.

Good experience at this location. great food, friendly service, all around good experience. It's nice to find a restaurant such as this away from our country style life at home.

Just OK - If you are visiting - try some place else Highly recommended by locals. Unfortunately, it is just average food. The service is fantastic. I was pretty disappointed after the build-up by the locals. Then again my comparison points are places in Austin like Threadgills and Dot's. This just doesn't compare. This was comparable to a good Luby's in Texas. Go to the Honest Pint instead.

I was visiting Chattanooga with a business associate who had been to Southern Star before. He raved about it and I can see why. I thought that it was VERY good. Not 5-stars but certainly four in terms of food quality and the level of service. I had the meatloaf which (I believe) was a special the day I was there. It was really good and I do not generally eat meatloaf in restaurants since my wife's meatloaf is hard to beat. The only thing I didn't care for was the ketchup that they put on it (is that a southern thing?). But who really cares? I simply scraped it off. The meatloaf was moist and tasty and I really liked the big chunks of onion in it. I had the mashed potatoes which - again - I usually do not order when I am out. They were excellent. I also had the creamed corn. Creamed corn is one of those things that my mother served me from a can when I was a kid and I vowed to never eat it as an adult. Well, I am now a believer. I saved room for dessert and had the banana pudding. It was unlike any banana pudding that I had ever had but it was spectacular. It was topped with meringue which I had never had on banana pudding before (is that another southern thing?). The service was exceptional, too. So I would certainly go back.

I am pretty happy with my lunch I had here the other day. I got a half dozen, fried shrimp, a cucumber salad and mashed potatoes. Reasonably priced, I was satisfied with my good meal. The shrimp are hand breaded and very flavorful and the cucumber salad is more on the sweeter side than the vinegar side. I thought it was great. The mashed potatoes had to be homemade because there was big lumps of potatoes in the mix. I was so happy! The interior is way cute. I love the big stars and the layout. It just made you feel really relaxed. The display case of desserts was not bad either. I wish I wasn't so full after my meal!

Great southern food! Best Banana Pudding in the South!! Chicken Salad Sandwich is wonderful. Brunswick stew is amazing. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu to be honest. Sad thing is I don't get to go here very often anymore, though I used to work for Rick and Nancy (owners) back in college when the Southern Star was in a different locale (closer to St. John's near the Chattanooga Choo Choo). Great people to work for (though I did gain about 15 lbs working there eating their wonderful food 5 days a week). Keep up the great work Rick.

I found this restaurant to be ok. The service was a bit slow. All of the food seems to be pretty fried/slightly greasy. Not to bad if you know what you are getting yourself into.
