Healthy Meal suggestions for Outback Steakhouse

Sometimes writing reviews on a well known franchise like outback almost seems to be a waste of time but I think the service and food is not always the same so I will focus on that. First it is located in Northgate Mall area right off Hwy 153 so plenty of parking. They open the door for you when you arrive and greet you. I have been here a number of times and the waiter was polite but seemed unhappy and he was kind of short in his speech, like he was uncomfortable talking to real people. There was 3 adults, two toddlers and one munchin - so three kidlets in all. They were very accommodating and got us high chairs as needed. We ordered cheese fries, which in my opinion is the best in the industry, but not healthy ;-). They had draught beer but limited selection. I had Fosters and they (adults) had Blue Moon... tall ones. My daughter and I ordered clam chowder soup, which made me very happy because years ago they stopped serving it and apparently it is back on the menu... if you like clam chowder (white creamy kind), you will love it here. However our soup was almost cold so the waiter took it back and the manager brought out two hot bowls and was apologetic so all is good. The place is clean and is what you would expect from an Outback, same pretty much everywhere. I guess I will give it a 4 because of the cheese fries, beer and the fact it is pretty consistent wherever I go ... if they had Roger Alan Wade playing or slot machines, I would have given it a 5!!! ...

I have eaten in the Hixson Outback since it opened. I have never had a bad meal and only bad service once. Our last visit we went with another couple and three of us ordered steaks and my wife ordered the chicken tenders. The appitizer was brought to the table quickly and was cooked perfectly. I love a good bloomin' onion when done right. The steaks arrived and they were cooked perfectly and my porterhouse was excellent and I cut it with my fork. One of our baked potatoes was under cooked and was replaced in the blink of an eye. The best way to enjoy Outback is to learn the menu and how to have your food cooked. The difference between the traditional cooking and the "wood fired" method can mean a good steak or a great one. Ask about specials and engage your server and ask about what is good. Enjoy your dinner or lunch.

Absolutely pitiful excuse for lunch. Ordered ribeye sandwich that consisted of about a three inch sandwich with one piece of meat measuring less than an eighth inch thick. Never again.

Good to take home but decide to go in this time and relax.. Start with a blooming onion and a water and then moving on the prime rib and unlimited shrimp

Unlimited shrimp in limited supply. We were eating the 5-8 popcorn sized shrimp before the next round came out. About 8-10 minutes waiting between rounds. Our server was great because he brought the first round out with our salads and tried to keep up.

Not very good. Steaks over cooked and appetizer was terrible. Must have been sitting under a heat lamp for a while. Do not recommend.

Update to my previous review: Though I'm absolutely a fan of the Hixson Outback, my family caught the kitchen on an off night tonight. Moldy bread (which management profusely apologized for and offered to comp our appetizer over), the bloomin' onion had uncooked seasoning powdered throughout, and the "comped" appetizer was never removed from the bill. The Victoria's filets were sold out due to a special run earlier in the week, but this was only revealed after my party tried to order, and my well-flavored Firecracker salmon (an item on the current special list) was severely undercooked (squishy gooey). The French onion soup was barely warm, but it was delicious, and the on-special. carrot cake was great. Service was sweet, prompt and attentive. Management was well-meaning, and to be fair, my party only complained about the original problem of moldy bread. All in all, this trip was a low point in my Outback experience list, but I'll definitely give them another try at some point in the future.

Five stars for just an all around great lunch experience here. Friendly greeting and door opened for us upon arrival. We were seated in Michael's section, and he did a superb job as our server. He was attentive without hovering, just what I like. Food was prepared as ordered, hot and fresh. Steak was fork tender. No complaints here. I will return.

My wife and usually love the Outback food as it's usually fairly consistent. Tonight was not so good. We arrived around 5:00 pm and their dinner rush had not kicked off yet. We were greeted by the hostess who immediately seated us. We were seated in a section where there was a table of 10-15 people who had just ordered drinks. I asked if we were being served by the same server who was taking care of the large group and she assured me that it would be no problem. She said he was one of the better servers. Ok. So he comes and gets our drink order and we ordered a bloomin onion. Easy enough for Outback, right? Drinks are out fast and so is the bread. No problem so far. After a couple of minutes the app comes out. The Bloomin Onion isn't cut and is half cooked. The picture I included are pieces of the onion I had to pull from my mouth. The seasoning on the onion was squishy. Then my salad came out with nothing on it after I ordered ranch. I had to ask the server to bring some ranch for my ranch salad. I waited for our filets to come out. My wife likes hers medium rare. I like mine medium. Both came out cooked the same. My wife ordered shrimp with hers and it was not brought out with the steak. Again had to ask for the rest of the order. The manager took off the app which was appreciated, but not the best visit.

Great food, reasonable prices, Southern Hospitality. Bloomin' onions will always keep me coming back!

I wish Yelp allowed half-star votes, because this place really deserves 3.5 stars. However, I'm rounding down to 3 stars because of the service we received. Here's why: We arrived at 7:45 p.m. and the place was almost empty. There was a party of about 8-10 off to the side, but other than that there were just a few tables with people here and there throughout the place. There were several servers milling about the restaurant and bar area. The hostess sat us right away and told us our server would be right with us. A female server buzzed around our area clearing away her other tables' food and talking to a couple of older ladies seated at the booth right next to us, but never even looked our way. After 10 minutes we still hadn't been greeted. The server walked by again, kind of close to our table, and made eye contact with me, but then she turned and walked away. Ok then! We waited a few more minutes, and at 8 p.m. when we still hadn't been greeted or even acknowledged with a "I'll be right with you," my husband went back to the hostess stand to let her know that we hadn't been greeted yet. She told him she would "handle it," and went over to the area adjacent to us and spoke with a male server. About five more minutes later (at this point I was counting just to see how ridiculous our wait would get in a nearly empty restaurant to even be greeted), he came over, said hello and asked what we wanted to drink. No apology, which I thought was a bit tacky considering we had now been waiting 20 minutes and the hostess had to go tell him he had a table waiting on him. It took 10 more minutes for him to bring us our glass of beer and wine. So now we're at 30 minutes after we entered this nearly dead restaurant before we got anything to drink. Since we had been sitting there so long we had already figured out what we wanted to eat, so we ordered as soon as our drinks were brought to us. Another 30 minutes later, our food came out. Mine was OK--I am vegetarian so I just ordered sides. The sweet potato was probably the smallest sweet potato I have ever seen, but it was cooked well and had a nice amount of butter and brown sugar in it. The sauteed mushrooms were cooked well, too, and were tasty. The asparagus was so-so; a couple pieces were burnt, which I found curious since the stalks were still crunchy so it's not like they were overcooked. They were tasteless, too, which is disappointing because it's not like Outback doesn't keep any kind of seasoning on hand. But all of the stars in this review are for my husband's food--he ordered the 8 oz. filet (medium rare) with the horseradish crust and said it was done perfectly. The best steak he has ever had at any Outback. So, the three stars are for a perfectly cooked steak, which is probably what most people reading reviews of Outback Steakhouse care about. But I'm deducting two stars for the insane wait times we had and the lack of acknowledgment of our waiting (and partly for my burnt, tasteless asparagus--if you're going to upcharge by a dollar for something, make sure you at least don't burn it). But seriously: We were sitting in the restaurant for 20 minutes before we were greeted initially by our server, we were there for 30 minutes before we received our first drinks, and we were there for an hour before we received our food. And the place was EMPTY. (Note: If you're wondering why we didn't just leave and go eat someplace else, my husband and I have received a bunch of gift cards over the years for Outback, but because there are other, better steakhouses around (and because I am vegetarian) we had stockpiled them. So we decided that we should start using them before they expire or get lost. We had already driven across town for this purpose, so we were in it to win it. Or something.)
