Went in on a Wednesday night, server was nice & one chef Cesar was great but wasn't impressed with much else.

Based on the appearance of the exterior, we were expecting a high class experience. It just looks like an upscale hibachi place. But after getting seated, the dining area looks a little dingy and it definitely doesn't match the exterior appeal. The service and entertainment were fine and friendly. However, the fried rice wasn't that good and the worst part is that they charge you EXTRA if you want fried rice ($2.10 per serving). Fried rice is part of the hibachi experience. How are you going to charge someone for it? There is only once choice of salad dressing and its mustard based. Its the least asian dressing I've ever tasted. I've been to Ichiban for lunch and thought it was much better!

This is an extremely good Japanese steakhouse! Out of a group of 6 of my friends, 3 of us favor this restaurant over all others, and the other three favor shogun or ichiban over this one. However, we all agree that it has some really good food. The ginger sauce and the fried rice are *awesome*. The staff has always been very nice, and the food is normally served fairly quickly. You should plan an hour to an hour and a half when eating here (it's not meant to be an in and out type place). Lunch is significantly cheaper than dinner, so if you have the option to choose, choose lunch. The only difference between the two is soup, sherbet and the flaming shrimp appetizer (2 pc). I highly recommend this place!

Best in town. I have been eating here for over 20 years. Great drink specials, half price sushi until 6:30 everyday and the best sauces ever. Better than all the other guys. You can't go wrong with Kampi.

BLEH! Ominars. I'm usually not too picky on hibachi since I've realize how inconsistent it can be due to different chefs, however, this place is awful! We had dinner here when I came up Friday afternoon, and it was such a disappointment that even D was upset with his meal. I ordered the shrimp and sirloin combination and ordered my sirloin in medium rare, and ended up getting practically well done. I also enjoy veggies that most hibachi places offer but this place pretty much just gives onions and squash. If you order the veggie hibachi, then you'll get more veggies like carrots, broccoli, etc. You end up with an enormous amount of fried rice, way to much then what you get in meat and veggies. Overall, we were not pleased and doubt we'll come back, especially since there are other hibachi places all throughout Chattanooga.

I had one of my best sushi experiences at this place about 4 years ago. The sushi I had then just hit the spot but whatever has happened to this restaurant since then is a mystery to me. I was in the area recently and went to eat there. I asked to sit at the sushi bar, which the hostess just pointed towards it and went back to what she was doing. I walked in and was not greeted until I started moving stuff around to make room for me at the sushi bar to which the bartender (the sushi bar is connected to the main bar) asked if i was planning to eat and clearly was annoyed I was there. I had one roll, I ordered two and didnt eat one because it did not say it was heated on the menu and it was. I didnt say anything, I just paid and left. It was not memorable but I chalked it up to a bad day. Then I get home and the restaurant more than double charged me my bill. I called and asked to speak to a manager, they told me I had to come there with my receipt, my bank statement and proof that I had been overcharged. I live 30+ minutes away. They should have been able to look it up in their computer and gone in using my receipt number. Wont be back to this place. Which i filed a dispute w my bank and within 5 minutes they had refunded my money.

I don't quite know about this place. Went here for the first time today... Had the chicken because, let's be honest it's all seasoned the same here and nothing is much different. The food tasted well. The white sauce was spicer than usual but good. Didn't seem like the cleanest place to eat. And it took a little too long for the service to start in my opinion and we had a full table already

Not impressed. Came with a large work crew. The place seems a bit old - run down hibachi tables and the ambiance leaves a bit to be desired. Three of us ordered sushi w our hibachi and it did not come out until after we had already finished our meal. The dressing on the salad tasted like mustard - not the ginger dressing I am used to. One member of our party got the hibachi salmon that was not cooked to her satisfaction - after sending it back.

My wife loved this place, though I always thought it was kind of dirty. But now thanks to the new management it's gone downhill fast. The food was always okay, just stir fry food...most of the time the cook managed not to put the spatula with raw chicken in the rice he was serving...but now I just say "no" to Kanpai.

The staff is consistently rude and unconcerned about the customer. Beginning with the call to make reservations to being seated and interacting with waitress, this is the worst customer experience I have had in Chattanooga. I tried Kanpai more than once trying to give it a 2nd and 3rd chance with same result. Terrible customer service.
