Stopped here for a quick bit en route to Alabama and was pleasantly surprised. Very tender smoked pork and ribs. With a dry rub atop the babybacks fall right off the bone. If they warn you the hot BBQ sauce is hot, it is. I didn't give them enough credit, but learned the hard way. I'd do it again, but just be forewarned. The service was fantastic. A nice young lady made sure I had everything I needed, and when I told her I was passing through she made sure it was quick. Can't wait to come through again. Next time, I'm staying longer.

If you are near Chattanooga, stop here for a great pulled pork sandwich. Fast and friendly service. The fried okra and green beans are the best. With a still on the counter and Popcorn Sutton on the walls you will eat in good company!

If your looking for a fancy place to eat, this is not your spot. If you want great BBQ, from a bunch of super nice people, then you don't want to skip Hillbilly Willies. We had the fry platter with pork, ribs, pulled beef and a burger. Everything was great dry rubbed, with sauce on the side. We even ordered another full rack to go to eat on the road for lunch the next day :).

As a native Memphian, I have high expectations of barbecue. That being said, I thought the barbecue itself was great. Pulled pork vs chopped, slaw right on the sandwich the way it should be and a heaping portion of it. Kudos there. The rest? The overall plan was not obvious to a non regular - do I sit down or walk up to the counter? There was a menu board for specials, but the only menu in the place was on the front counter - that doesn't leave much time for shopping the menu before you order. Not a kids friendly menu at all - I was informed that it would "be at least 15 minutes if you order a burger" when my daughter requested one. Seriously? C'mon! No ketchup or extra sauce at the table - these are barbecue rules, man! Beans were straight from a can and sweetened a little. Overall, not sad I tried it but I wouldn't be a regular here even if I lived nearby.

This is, quite possibly, one of the best 'cue joints I'm aware of... Ambience: Exactly what a southern BBQ place should have. Decent sized tables, comfortable chairs, moonshining art on walls, specials written on wallboard... Service: Amazing. Place your order...ask questions and get great answers about how they make their 'cue and sides. Go sit down. Savor the delivery of your meal. Food: Awesome. I had dry-rub ribs and pulled pork. I cannot express how good the ribs were...perfectly done, moist, flavorful, correct texture, everything. The pulled pork, like all good 'cue should, was able to stand on its own without sauce. That being said you'd be an idget to not use the sauce. Lightly sweet with a little bit of pepper/heat... The coleslaw is pretty sweet and is designed to be used to top the pork. The beans were flavored and not overdone. The potato salad is good as were the green beans. Overall: You must try this place. MUST.

Pulled pork was very good. Ribs had a great rub. Mild BBQ sauce was excellent. The coke cake made my husband want to slap his momma and, watch out New Orleans cause your beignets have a run for their money compared to their Southern Style Biscuits and Jelly!! We ate south we sat outside in the parking lot and had some alkazeltzer :)

Food was delicious, service was excellent and they even let us finish our meal. We arrived around 8 pm, which was closing time and they took us in and fed us well! Nothing like down home southern cooking and hospitality!

We came all the way from Atlanta for Willy's BBQ and it was worth the drive. Tasty pork, excellent coleslaw, okra and green beans. Friendly people, too. We'll make the trip again!

Amazing food. Ribs were falling off the bone. A must if traveling through the area. We will return in our way home.

Great BBQ! Had lunch here before heading out to Rock City. After taking a train ride of the Incline Railway, my fiancé suggested to come back for more BBQ for dinner. Best BBQ beef sandwich. It will melt in your mouth! Delicious baby back ribs too! Very nice, friendly and welcoming staffs. This place is recommended if visiting Lookout Mtns.

  • Victor R.

Polite, friendly staff and tasty meat. This is pretty basic BBQ here, folks. We had the pulled pork sandwiches. As a BBQ eater, I tend to prefer well-balanced quality: I want the sides to be as good as the meat. I think if they put as much work and quality into the sides as they do the meat, this would be a great place.

We just moved here from Iowa and wanted to find a good BBQ joint, so we stopped here after hiking around Lookout Mountain. I never write reviews but OMG this place was so fantastic. My bf is from Texas and I'm from Virginia, so we believe we know good barbecue when we taste it. We got the jumbo pulled pork sandwich. The meat was very good -- tender but not mushy. But the sauce. Holy smokes, the sauce. It's the best barbecue sauce I've ever tasted. I'm not a foodie and don't know what flavors I'm tasting, so all I can tell you is it's delicious. I believe there was a bourbon flavor to it. I got the mild and he got the hot and both were fantastic. For my side, I got their potato salad, and it was so good I bought more to take home with me. The woman who took our order was very gracious and friendly, offering suggestions and asking where we were from. The service was fast and the place was clean with a no-frills, rustic decor. We got sweet tea to drink and it was served in cute plastic mason jars. It wasn't too sweet, either, which I really liked. We're going back every weekend, if I have any say in the matter!

Ate here for the second time tonight and I honestly don't know why I don't eat here more often. The food is great and the service I excellent. I had the the beef plate with fried okra and BBQ beans. The okra was cooked just right and the beans were awesome. Sweet tangy and little bits of pulled pork. The beef was tender and moist with good smoke flavor. I had it dry with their hot BBQ sauce on the side because I like to taste the smoke in the meat. Overall an exceptional experience. Have also had their pulled pork and coleslaw and it didn't disappoint. Some one else in our party had the burger and it looked tasty as well. Will definitely have to make an effort to come back more often.

I absolutely love this place! Yes it might be a little dive but it is all part of the experience. I would have never thought when I rolled up to this sad looking strip mall that it would house such delicious food. The service is great and the owner is such a sweet man, he sat and chatted with my husband and I the first time we came in on our way from Atlanta to Nashville. We are going back to Chattanooga next month mostly for this BBQ. Their pulled pork is awesome and their potato salad is to die for! Two thumbs way up Hillbilly Willy's!!

This place is awesome! We stopped by on our way to Bonnaroo Music Festival and they were very friendly. The service was fast when I went, the pulled pork was cooked to perfection and their BBQ sauce on top was excellent. One of the best pulled pork dishes I've had (regular pulled pork, not the sandwich). I would recommend the mac and cheese and baked bean sides! For dessert: you need to get the Coke Cake!! Split it because it is so sweet but so yummy

This place is amazing! We have wanted to try a real southern BBQ place the last two times we have went down south and finally chose this one and we were very happy with the food! Amazing!!! Awesome!!! The pulled pork sandwich w/slaw on top, excellent. Same for the chicken sandwich and the halfback ribs. The potato salad is a bit weird it looked like mashed potatoes when it came out but then when I took a bite it was Half or so mashed with chunks of potatoe and hy

The Best Ribs I have had in a long time. Excellent rub, smoked great and tender pull off the bone and dip in sauce if you like. They are served with sauce on the side. ( Always sign of good ribs).Dill potato salad and Baked are great also. I just went to grab carry out but the service was excellent from the welcome from the staff when you walk in the door to request to refill my Tea after they brought me my meal. On my list of places to eat when ever I am in the area.

  • Angie H.

Meh. The ribs were cooked well (tender, fall off the bone) but they were VERY bland. Really disappointed. I've never had to actually salt ribs before! The servers were great, very friendly and efficient. The fried okra was good but even the potato salad and beans were bland and pretty flavorless. Also, the sauce is really sweet and I prefer tangy and/or smokey. All around just "ok".

Best BBQ in Chattanooga! Usually how I rate a BBQ place is by their Loaded Baked Potato. I have definitely had some good ones. Some great ones that come to mind would be Jim n Nicks in AL and the Purple Daisy in St. Elmo. Those are very good, but Hillbilly's is the best. It's a lot of food though and bit on the pricey side. Another great/more economical choice would be the Pork Plate for $8.99, which includes a side and a drink and is also really good. Service is amazing! One complaint I would have is that the website says they open at 11, but they don't open until 11:30 and they won't open the door until 11:30!

Don't let the shopping center deter you. The hand-pulled pork is excellent! The cole slaw is, too. The fries are ok. The staff is VERY nice & helpful. Get the peanut butter pie if they have it!

I was searching for a BBQ off I 24 headed back to Atlanta from Nashville. The yelp app did not disappoint.... A drive BBQ place in a strip center. Full slab and I'm stuffed. Great flavors....: worth the stop

  • Leah L.

Great ribs-fell off the bone. They don't even give you a knife because the meat just falls off the bones. We got the half rack of ribs with fried okra and coleslaw for $26. It was enough food for 2. The fried okra was geeat! Not overcooked- didn't come sitting in a pool of oil. It was great and I highly recomend it! The coleslaw was the minced kind and while my bf and I enjoy the longer strands of cabbage, this coleslaw was great. It wasn't too sweet or salty and the amount of mayo was just right. Not too watery. We asked for sauce on the side and that may have been why I thought the ribs were slightly dry but they were still fall off the bone good. There was some pulled pork that came with the dish and that was excellent-pretty juicy! I didn't feel like it was a texas level rib experience overall hence the 4 stars. Check in and get a free sweetened or non sweetened iced tea. Only some of the employees knew about it though.

  • Brooke M.

Best BBQ EVER!!!! Ribs are smoked and dry rubbed and then come in mild or spicy, tangy and amazingly tender fall off the bone good. Not to mention the best pulled pork and fried okra. Oh, and if that doesn't do it for you, try the HOME BREW sweet tea served in a Mason jar with unlimited refills. And that's just the food! Super friendly staff, all really attentive and nice. Everyone greets you and is friendly. I wish they had a more than 5 star option!! Will come back for sure, this place is a hidden treasure!!!

Best ribs we've ever had. The dry rub is amazing and the meat is fall off the bond tender. The pulled pork is also phenomenal and the sauce is great. The staff is friendly, attentive, & fast. Try the baked beans & fried okra - they are the perfect addition to your meal.

Came here on recommendation from the front desk clerk at the hotel, glad we did! BBQ fry plate & pork dinner. AMAZING, very tender! Huge iced teas. Delicious fried okra, and I'm not usually a big fan of okra. Great slaw too. Only thing that would make this place better is if they had beer.

I decided to try this place out based on the reviews. Honestly, I have no idea why someone could rate this five stars. It's a dive bbq place in a dive plaza. Looks like it was a Little Cesar's before this in size and looks. First off, does not even smell like a BBQ place when you walk in. Menu is limited. No half chicken, other large items. If you only want pulled pork for sandwiches then this place may do. On the positive. The bake beans were great, the sauce was good southern sweet bbq. Not bad. But my bbq pork was delivered barely warm. The sweet tea was good but in a small mason jar. A few sips and it was empty and regardless of how many times the servers pass by I never got a refill. Might have earned another star if service was ever reasonable. But not today.

  • Emily C.

Nice little spot for lunch off the highway! While driving from Chattanooga to Nashville, we stopped for a quick lunch and some tasty sweet tea. Two pulled pork sandwiches and a side of BBQ beans and fries (plus two jars of tea) rang up around $20 which is very reasonable. While there was a bit of a line, it moved quickly and the staff were efficient in a mix of counter and table service. The food was decent, if a bit above average. Moist pork, average BBQ sauce and bun. I wouldn't hesitate stopping again if this was on the route I was heading, but wouldn't drive out of the way for it.

Yeehaw this place is the bees knees. If you want mouth watering bbq, look no further. I highly recommend willys huge stuffed tater. I can die happy in bbq heaven now.

We come here every year on our Thanksgiving pilgrimage from Atlanta to Kansas and have never been dissapointed. My test of a good BBQ restaurant is their fried okra. Each one has just enough crisp but not overcooked. Their beans are amazing and the service is outstanding. What a gem of a place!

  • Elesha M.

Highly recommend. Stopped in on our way through town w/ my husband, myself & our 5 kids. Service was pleasant & friendly. Order was accurate & came out quick. Kid's meals came w/a drink. Restrooms were clean & well stocked. Spoke with the owner & he was very personable. Prices reasonable for the giant portions. Food was outstanding. I had the chicken potato & would get it again. Husband had the Barbeque fried plate & said it was delicious. Baked beans were also great. Too full for dessert but I would like to come again when passing through to try it. Thanks for the great meal!

We went on a busy night, so the service was a little slow but the food is definitely worth the wait. The hot BBQ sauce was great. They are a little conservative with the sauce but the friendly staff was more than happy to bring me more when asked. Next time I pass through Chattanooga I will stop in again.

I just moved to the south, and after enjoying a few great BBQ joints in Nashville and Knoxville, I knew Chattanooga would have a place to stand up to the competition. After reviewing places on the internet, Hillbilly Willys got overall consistent reviews. Great atmosphere, ambience, etc (all the things that don't matter too much) were great here. Unfortunately, the service was marginal and the food regrettable. I ordered the half rack of ribs plate with baked and green beans as sides. The baked beans were the best item on the menu, second was the green beans, and third was the bbq sauce haha. I'm not even saying this to spite the restaurant, but it's true. The item I paid the most for and was most excited about was the last I touched.. The ribs were dry, had no flavor, and were warm at best. It didn't make me feel much better that when I got my food delivered to me the woman running the front dropped the plate on the table and walked away without saying anything. If you like very average tasting meat, Hillbilly Willy's will do it for you, if you like flavor and zest, check elsewhere! I care about my BBQ. This was a disappointment.

    (2)
  • Gen M.

Not Awesome. Meat is ok, sides suck. It's not the worst but it's not good either, if you never had BBQ out of chattanooga I understand cuz I've tried them all here and they are not delicious. The only good BBQ in Chattanooga is Silver jalapenos butt.

    (2)
  • Ray T.

As another reviewer already said, this place is in a rundown plaza. Hillbilly Willy's looks rundown as well, but the food was great. My wife and I each had a half-slab ribs: lots of meat falling off the bone . No knives needed. The taste was great. The menu says that this place has been featured on PBS as one of the 8 best bbq joints in Tennessee. I can see (taste) why!!

First time I visited Chattanooga, 2008, I asked a local, "where's a good place to grab a bite to eat?" They directed me to Hillbilly Willy's, I am forever grateful! Went again in 2011 and it was just as good. Can't wait for vacation 2013, we will be sure to stop in for lunch!

  • Daniel B.

This place serves up good pulled pork and pretty good sides! I love the ambience of being a simple strip mall spot but loaded with great flavors. The newspaper clippings and clientele proves this is a local joint and not some place trying to be fancy and make you think it's legit barbecue...it's the real deal.

  • Pat C.

Awesome smoked BBQ! Great prices! This is basically a take-out place. Come home with bags of food from this place and you will make friends for life! Brisket was perfectly moist and tender. Pulled pork was nothing but porky goodness! I think we had potato salad and something else but I was too busy with the meat.

Hillbilly Willy's is a family owned and operated restaurant in Tiftonia. The ribs are good but I recommend the pork sandwich. Its probably the best pork sandwich I've ever had. The sauce is good. I like both mild and hot. The service is very friendly. They don't serve beer because they are too close to the church.

Best BBQ ever! Try the dry rub on their ribs! All the staff was super friendly too.

For what it was, a hole in the wall BBQ joint off I-75 near Chatt. Tn. Good sandwich and sides. Thought it was a bit pricey but it was good. Good service and friendly.

  • Rob B.

This was a good little find in a rundown plaza on the outskirts of Chattanooga; the staff is very friendly and attentive. I had the BBQ pork platter with baked beans and slaw. The pork was nice and moist with the right amount of smoke, with a slathering of their mild sauce so I had to make it right by mixing in some nicely spiced hot BBQ sauce. The slaw was creamy, cool and refreshing and the baked beans had a nice strong molasses flavor. The portion for the price was very generous. I will defiantly come back again if I find myself nearby.

Best cue in town. Surprised to see some of the bad reviews. Pork is tender and smoky. The two sauces are very flavorful. Great sides and friendly service.

I think George and his crew bring a raise of the bar to the BBQ scene in Chattanooga. His atmosphere reflects 1900-1950 rural TN, and his passion for cooking and flavor can be tasted in any particular food you try. This IS the BEST BBQ in Chattanooga, TN. Let no one else tell you otherwise. Make the trip, and take the ride.

We have travelled to Memphis and North Carolina multiple times and Austin once just to eat local barbecue. Our Chattanooga trip was not planned to be a barbecue tour, but we did end up eating some and it was all pretty good. Our first place was Hillbilly Willy's. We spotted their sign along I-24 and our hotel desk clerk recommended it as being good and close. This is a one-off family place where locals eat (as opposed to our later barbecue stops). The people were wonderful and we felt really welcome. We sampled plenty of ribs, brisket and pulled pork along with no fewer than five sides. All the meats were good, but the ribs were the winner. They were served dry (my preference) but the meat was not dry. They were perfectly smoked, moist and tender. The dry rub added after smoking needed a tad of salt but that seems to be a theme with me. I like the dry rub to be "cooked-in". These were very good, purist ribs. The brisket was tender, again needed salt and was headed towards dry. It is hard to keep brisket moist and still have it melt in your mouth tender. The pulled pork was a very coarse pull. It was good, moist and smoky. It was served topped with sauce. I use minimal quantities of sauce, if any with barbecue. Theirs was balanced sweet and tangy, I'd say similar to Memphis. It had an almost fruity flavor that was good. It is not the first time I have thought a barbecue sauce tasted like chile and tamarind. The slaw was creamy and somewhat sweet. Good standard stuff. The beans were very rich and sweet almost caramelly, like Ms T used to make. The potato salad was almost mashed (Aunt Annie would approve) with dill flavor, excellent. The collards on the other hand were the worst I have ever had. They were just coarsely chopped and boiled in a little salt free water. They were under done, with no seasoning. This is the first time I have left collards behind. Ms T had her fried okra fix and they were lightly breaded, fresh and delicious. Hillbilly Willy's is well worth a visit.

This is a legit place for Bar-B-Que. Great sauce. We had the rib combo and the Stuffed Tater with chicken. If you have room try the Coca Cola cake. Everything was great! Great service and nice people. Worth the trip.

My family and I have a rule when we head out on road trips - absolutely no icky chain restaurants. We stumbled on Hillbilly Willy's because it was right off of I-24 West. It's not much to look at but the characters of people coming and going are amazing. Also note that the lady who took our order was PAINFULLY SLOW. I mean, it took literally 10 minutes. But, after that, it wasn't too long of a wait and I swear I has the best ribs of my life. My husband had a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on it that he loved, too. If you come across this place and are wondering if it's worth it - give it a shot. It's really good.

I have never in my life tasted BBQ like this. I highly recommend the Beef Brisket, fried okra, and baked beans. To all the Rock City - Ruby Falls visitors, don't miss this place! By far the pinnacle of our trip! (Don't forget to get dessert too, it is to die for)

Great service! Jennifer took our to go order and made sure we had everything we needed for the Boy Scout dads. The food (pulled pork, beans, slaw, fried okra and coca cola cake) was more than enough to satisfy our hunger before we went into Raccoon Cave for a night of hiking and sleeping. The sauce was a little sweet for my taste but the exceptional service made this a worthwhile dinner choice.

Excellent pork BBQ! A little tougher and doesn't have that bit of crunch I like at Saws in Birmingham, but very friendly service and not crowded.

The yelpers were right, this place is great. The owner talked with us for a while and we had a nice stop on our trip through Tenneessee. My husband got his usual brisket order. He loves him some brisket. He said that it was juicy and tender. He is always comparing all his Bar B Q to Texas brisket and he was not disappointed. I am a vegetarian and indulge my husbands Bar B Q hunger a lot. I usually end up with cole slaw and potato salad but at Hillbilly Willys I had the BEST fried okra I have ever had and that's saying a lot. Don't miss out on some great food and conversation.

After moving to Chattanooga area over a year ago, we love to explore good southern restaurants. We have tried many, but Hillbilly Willie's is our favorite. We usually go for lunch and there is always a good crowd. Food comes out quickly and is more then you can eat!!!! We have only ate the pulled pork sandwiches but it is the best pulled pork and sauce in town! The hot sauce does have a good kick to it. Tea is great! The staff is very friendly and never leave your glass empty. If nearby you definitely need to stop here!!!

The ribs were fantastic the meat fell off the bones and was very juicy. The potatoe salad was just OK it tasted like cold mashed potatoes. The bbq beans were great a little sweet but very good.

Don't waste your time and money going to St. Louis, Texas, Kansas, etc for great St Louis ribs. The ribs are authentic St Louis style and have a great smoky flavor and fall off the bone tenderness. Also the potato salad and baked beans are delicious. They just opened a place in Ooltewah in the BiLo Shopping center area. This is a must go to place if you love ribs and Q.

Stopped in for lunch, and was greeted by that sweet smell of smoked meat that is intoxicating. Order at the counter and food is delivered to you. I had 1/2 baby back ribs, pork, beef and two sides...potato salad and baked beans. The ribs were dry rubbed and served dry with either a sweet or hot sauce on the side. The sauces were fantastic. Ribs were moist, and pulled cleanly from the bone, but were not over done and "fall off the bone" nor were they mushy. The beef was almost on the verge of getting overdone but was not. Good smokey and beefy flavor. Out of the three meats, the pork was the weakest...pulled not chopped, which i like, but a tad overdone and dry...but had good smoke and spice. The ribs still had the membrane on the back...not a fan. Generic potato salad and above average beans. Friendly staff...will recommend for BBQ enthusiasts.

A good BBQ restaurant really depends on the pulled pork to me. You either have good pulled pork or you don't. Unfortunately for this local eatery, they did not have it for lunch today. I wanted to like this place. It was in a run down strip mall. It has a logo of an old redneck with two teeth. It is owned by a local family. It has a variety of homemade sides to chose from. I was prepared to ignore the fact that there were three 16 year old kids it seemed cooking in the kitchen. Sadly, the beans were the best part of the meal. The pulled pork was dry, without flavor, and dry. Yes, I mentioned dry twice. The hot BBQ sauce was pretty good though. I also had potato salad at the recommendation of the staff, but it was not very memorable. Three stars and worthy of support if you are looking for a decent BBQ meal.

Great chopped pork, delicious sides (cole slaw, baked beans), fantastic, attentive service. We came on our way to Florida from Chicago, based on other Yelp reviews, and they did not steer us wrong. Slightly hard to spot, conveniently located between I24 and I75. We might just stop on our way home!

This might be good local BBQ, but I've had BBQ all over the South and the positive reviews this restaurant got made me feel disappointed after eating there. I felt misled. We only went here because Yelp recommended it. It's good, but I feel the chain of Sonny's is better.

I travel extensively and have tried some great and not-so-great BBQ. Unfortunately, this is not one of the great BBQ stops. The ribs had no smoke favor, overcooked, but fall off the bone tender. Sauce was okay which these needed. The sides of slaw and potato salad were okay. Service was good and friendly. Overall, this stop would not be recommended if you want good ribs.

Tasted like it was cooked in an oven.... It was not BBQed. Overpriced for what you get too. No culinary skills.

Ribs are good, potato salad was fair at best.
