While this place seems to have a pretty high rating, we had a very disappointing experience. I will admit that some of the factors at play here were beyond the restaurants control: for example, we should have anticipated it would be packed on a Friday night. However, the dining area is SO incredibly cramped and crowded that I was quite literally bumping elbows with the person at the table next to us (it was one long booth seat). Our poor waitress had to squeeze through just to speak with us. The layout of the entire area leaves much to be desired. Let's get to the food. First of all, I was shocked at the size of the bowl you are given to fill with food to be cooked on the mongolian grill. It was tiny. Not only was it small but the price for such a small bowl was an outrageous $11.50. I'm not one to be cheap when it comes to a good meal, but for that amount I know I could have gone somewhere else in the area and gotten quite a bit more food, and a more pleasant ambiance as well. Ultimately, I decided just to order an appetizer, the chicken lettuce wraps. They were good, but not good enough to convince me to return. My boyfriend went ahead and got the mongolian dinner. He is a vegetarian (by the way, the cost for a bowl is the same whether you get meat or not, which I find a bit ridiculous). After he cleaned his plate, he glanced down and said, "I'm still hungry." Maybe if you eat meat, it is a more filling meal, I suppose. Overall, once outside we both agreed not to go back. The food is far too mediocre to be worth the price and chaotic atmosphere.

Left here pretty disappointed. Walked in to a 30 minute wait, and got our names on the list. After 40 minutes and seeing no one left in the lobby that looked familiar, it became obvious that they had forgotten about it. Went inside and wouldn't you know it, a table JUST opened up. Looking at the list on the counter, I saw that they had gone past us and down the entire next column of names. For a nationwide chain that nearly always has a wait, maybe invest in a better queuing system than some post-it notes. After that, about what you'd expect. Stood in line for 20 minutes to get food, but it was as good as you'd hope. Still, it's going to be hard to rise above a 2 when it took over an hour to get the food.

I love Mongolian Bbqs, my favorite chain is BD's, but sadly there's none of them in Tennessee. Genghis Grill is good enough. Smaller then a BD's and not as many sauce or vegetable choices. I was still able to make something very tasty, and as spicy as I like it. A little crowded, but we were seated quickly and our server always made sure our drinks were full. A good stop downtown, after a visit to the aquarium, a lookouts game, or on the way to Rock City. Will be stopping there again.

4 stars just for the food. Parking sucks and server was just OK. If not for that easy 5 stars. I love picking what I want and as mush as I want of every thing they had and it was cooked perfect. Just don't go during a real busy time tho. Not a real big place. Can't wait to go back

The food was amazing! The service was awesome! Totally worth going to!! If I could lick the bowl clean I would! The place is clean and are very accommodating on where you want to sit! All in all really great place! The waitress Leslie is super nice and really fun!

I hate to drop it to a one, but one big reason will do that to a place.... A 70-something Health Score. Yeah, not so good. Hence, GG has closed. My experience was great and all seemed clean, etc. But apparently all doesn't meet the eye.

Always come here when I visit Chattanooga Food fast, good, hot. Service is ok...pretty typically across the board at other locations.

  • Wendell S.

Service and food was solid, the wait was a bit long and the line to construct your dish took longer that I recall from prior visits. They have changed the ordering process to make things flow faster - I am not sure that I saw an improvement. In short, okay food and service.

The days of the bottomless bowl are extinct. It's too privy for what you get. You're paying now for a huge bowl of rice. #franchisefail This is my last time here.

No. Just no. I have been to several Genghis Grill's across these fine United States and this one is unfortunately the worst. Let me give you a quick rundown: 1. Dirty floors 2. Food all over the counters 3. Food not kept on ice (The ice had all melted who knows when.) 4. Dirty counters 5. Dirty serving spoons and tongs 6. They burned my food. Burned it! The guy knew it, too, because I stood there and watched him. When I asked if I could make another bowl to replace the charcoal I was served, they said they'd have to charge me for it. I actually asked for a manager (which I NEVER do), but he "wasn't in right now." 7. Dirty tables 8. If you're unlucky enough to get seated by the front door, you have to deal with others staring at you while you eat. One guy kept hitting me in the head with his elbow while he was leaning on the divider. Seriously. 9. Wait staff could not care less about you, your drinks, or apparently their tips 10. I just felt like this list should have an even number This place struck out on so many levels for me. I'll stick with the independently owned Mongolian grill closer to home. At least I won't have Bro's elbow in my temple!

Fun concept of being able to pick out your own ingredients. First you pick your raw meat, seasonings, raw veggies and then sauce. You hand it over to the cook who then asks what starch you want- fried rice, brown rice, noodles or tortillas. The waiter then brings out the food to you. We went on St. Patrick's day and got green beer on draft. Our waiter was very pleasant and helpful. Establishment was clean and kept up.

Pretty good in general... What you would expect. Service at the grill portion can be pretty slow, but everything else is good.

  • Amaryllia L.

I've been to a handful of Mongolian grills and this one is on the upper end in terms of food quality. The selection is similar to other establishments but what made this one stand out is that they didn't overcook my shrimp, beef, scallops, or eggs! Yes, that alone is worth an extra star above average. $11 for one trip to the grill. + $4 if you want to upgrade to the buffet/unlimited option.

Long line tonight. Took about 10 minutes to get through the line. When our food arrived, it was burnt! When we asked the waitress about it, she said that it looked normal. My guest challenged her by asking "would you eat it?" The waitress abruptly changed her tone and said we could get back in line again if we did not want the food. Service was average at best. It was busy but our waitress did not come back for almost 15 min while we waited for our food. When she came to refill my water, she placed the cup on the table so hard that it splashed up and on to the table. She made no effort to clean it but simply walked away. Parking is a nightmare. Not sure if they even have a lot as they share the building with the murder mystery show.

We (two adults, 2 yo and 5 yo) had dinner. Overall the experience was very nice, and we managed to put together four decent combinations. The service was also very good.

All I can say is that I am in 'shock' that place is still in business. It violated SO many health. Codes that I don't know where to start. I live in Atlanta & maybe the state of Tennessee has different regulations. The place as a whole was just 'dirty'. Sticky floors, sticky tables. The only person I saw over the age of 20 was one 'cook'. I say this because there was a lack of direction in the whole place. First of all we are talking about the entire general public handling each & every item in the upcoming line of raw, uncooked foods. So the food line, first the trays, not so clean, the 'proteins' (& yes they were chilled') containers of Raw meats with black plastic tongs, the first set "laying" lengthwise in the blood of the empty chicken container. The raw pork stuck all over the tongs, you had to knock it off - ewwwww. Raw fish, scallops etc. Then next big variety of raw veggies, but there was no one coming behind folks wiping up, picking up the dropped foods on the floor, on and around the containers of raw food choices. Next, the flavoring choices, again they are one small utensil touched by the masses dipped into containers of what mostly seemed like flavoring mainly made up Salt. Next, the sauces. Small plastic spoons that we expect the general public not to dip into the big vat of sauce offerings to taste them & then make a choice & spoon into stainless steel little containers. Again, too many steps for the general public to be involved in without supervision. Next, (whew lots of people now touching your one bowl of raw, uncooked food items). The Older gentleman takes your bowl from you, you circle the type of rice or noodle you wish to accompany your soon to be cooked meal. They place all of this with your little card underneath to make sure you get your lovingly chosen 'bowl' cooked on a big black flat 'skillet' separated by some type of long dividers. Not sure what they were made of. Food taste/quality. Pretty awful really. Over cooked, the bay scallops were more like little tiny raisins because the whole bowl of food was overlooked, over salted just so not appealing. I let my husband talk me into eating here, against my better judgement when I saw what their set-up was. As you can imagine from this review, I won't be back.

Good food, HORRIBLE service and unkempt restaurant! Waited a good 5 minutes after being sat for drinks, cards for our orders, etc... Came back from the grill and she asked AGAIN what we were having to drink. Hubby's food arrived on time; mine took at least 10 minutes longer as if they had lost it. No apology, nothing. Never once asked if we wanted drink refills. We waited and waited and waited for our check. Bathroom was pretty gross, too. Ah, I could go on and on. Bottom line: service sucked, food was great once I finally received it.

A little apprehensive at first due to the reviews and grill smell. However, food was tasty and came pretty fast. Still a little odd to pick raw proteins...meats. Good food depends more on what you select than the cook.

This is always one of the most interesting and unique selections in town. The poor parking and long wait in line are always worth the individualized experience as you select from a wide variety of meats, veggies, spices, sauces, and pastas to create a one of a kind meal.

I don't give out many one star reviews but this one I couldn't justify giving it anything higher. I don't understand the people I've been talking to. Every recommendation of places to go to in Chattanooga, I have hated. This being one of them. I should have just trusted the Yelp Reviews. I also don't understand why this place has customers. As soon as I walked in my eyes went directly to the wearing of furniture. Then when we went to the line there was a mess on the counter and on the floor. I was hesitant to even keep going. Anything with raw meat out in the open like that makes me so nervous. You have to be checking the temps on that like crazy. My friend and I sat there and saw our food waiting to be delivered but our waitress no where. My friend got up and grabbed our stuff since it was just sitting there for so long. I had gone to the bathroom to wash up because I felt gross but the place intended to clean myself was also dirty. I was going to just find a manager at the end of my meal. My friend was a little bit more upset and we couldn't find our waitress. There were many employees so we were very confused. Finally found our waitress and my friend decided to walk over to her. She told him there were worse things in the world to look at. I'm sorry?? She quickly changed her tune and became extra friendly. By no means was I mad I was just grossed out. When we were walking out I thought I'd ask the hostess at the front a few questions. I asked who her manager was and she said Pinto. I asked if Pinto was the manager on duty and she said yes. I then asked where is Pinto and she said in the back. Pinto, please check on tables and stop breaking so many visible health code violations. I'm confused on how you have customers and I'm confused on how you're not failing inspections.

The low review is a cautionary rating for all that come here. The service is average, food is good, but the parking is a trip. The back parking lot is a tourist trap. We went to the Genghis Grill to eat and the line was out the door. We asked how long for a table and the wait was 20 minutes. We went outside and debated what to do and we decided to go across the street to eat. We were there 30 minutes and when we came out, my friends car was towed. Apparently the owner has a camera in the lot and restaurant. Regardless of how busy the restaurant is, you better wait or move your car. It is an old fashion money trap and because of the managers refusal to help us out (she admitted speaking to us and that the wait was long), I will never go back. I will support other local restaurants and park in a public lot.

I'm a fan of Mongolian grills and this place is above average. I'd give it five stars if the dining room was better. It's pretty grubby but this place is busy from open to close. The volume of business means the food on the buffet is always fresh. Some reviewers found the buffet bowl small. It is, though its the same I've seen at most other similar restaurants. The bowl that your meal is delivered in is NOT small. Service has always been first rate for us. We always visit Genghis Grill when we visit Chattanooga. Give it a try!

Ambience--loud, cramped, lots of kids and teeny boppers (it's cheap, can ya blame them?) Our server forgot a couple requests (soy sauce, refill, doggie bag), but she was pleasant and apologized. Food was ok. I built my bowl with shrimp, squid, and scallops. I considered it a risk, seeing as how buffet seafood and I have had a few unpleasant run-ins. I chose the Dragon sauce. Little too sweet'n'sour for my liking. I should've gone all in and chose a spicier concoction. Overall, a good meal, just not your quintessential Mongolian grill.

  • Duana M.

I absolutely hate having to go to a "restaurant" and then be obligated to serve myself. It defeats the purpose of paying for service. With that said, I was conned into coming here. Men. You pick up your bowl. You pick your meat/seafood. You pick your vegetables. You pick your mix ins/throw ins. Nuts, fruits, other random things to eat alongside your meat and veggies. You pick your seasoning. They say only use one spoon full, but I used 4 or 5 of the lemon pepper. You hand your bowl over to a cook. I'm a great cook. I could have and should have done this at home!

I love genghis grill, especially the free birthday bowl, which was a very good present for a birthday! We prefer to park on north shore and take the walking bridge for the experience, plus it makes a great after dinner adventure :0)

This place is fantastic! Parking complaints are a little unfair, since it is downtown. Very affordable for the quality and quantity of food. Service is good, considering it is a relatively easy environment for a server.

First time reviewer & first time here at Mongolian :). Service was mediocre but the food was above average. In a nutshell, I would bring someone here who has never been here on a hungry afternoon. Also, in hindsight, the customer is the one who decides what his/her meal will consist of. Choose wisely :).

Who came up with this idea? So in a world full of too many choices to begin with, here is a restaurant that makes you pick all of your own ingredients, and if you don't like how it tastes, there's no one to blame but yourself. Going on a Saturday night is not a good idea since the seating is not well arranged, it's cramped, and I was constantly avoiding 4X4 pillar in the middle of the restaurant. It is not a buffet, more cafeteria style. Average cost is 9.99 for a bowl of whatever choice of vegetables, protein, starch, sauce and minimal service. It was ok for an Americanized Asian restaurant. Food is cooked right in front of you. The fact that all the ingredients (raw meat esp) is sitting out was slightly disconcerting. Otherwise it was ok, nothing great.

  • Johnny B.

I went on a Saturday, around lunchtime. The wait was not bad, there was a bit of a line waiting to fill their bowls with goodness, but the line moved pretty quick. The food was fresh, and there is a variety of spices and sauces sure to please anyone. This is the Mongolian grill I have been to with calamari and scallops and they were delightful. I would highly recommend this place to anyone when in Chattanooga. "Wait Service" is kind of a misnomer here, you get your choices yourself, but the waiter brings it to your table when it is cooked and they bring your beverages (and kept mine full as well).

After hearing a number of people rave about this place, I met a friend here for dinner last night. I was a little apprehensive after my recent experience with a similar concept in Atlanta. Fortunately, this place is WAAAY better. In case you are not aware, Genghis Grill is an Asian-style buffet. You grab a bowl and fill it with what you want as you walk down the line and then at the end, they cook it with the starch of your choice. What makes this better than that other place is that are less things to confuse you. The ingredients are laid out in a logical order. There's no "little paddles" to deal with (and remembering what they mean). There are fewer "exotic" ingredients, but I think that makes for a better experience. If you don't know what you like, you can build one of their suggestions, using the color coordinated strips on the buffet line. Either way, it makes for a great meal. I made sure I smashed everything into the bowl, so I got plenty of proteins and veggies! When they're done cooking your meal, they bring you this massive bowl full of what you just picked out. It's piping hot, so be careful! One bowl really filled me up, but for a few dollars more you can have all you can eat. For a Monday night, this place was about half-full.... I can only imagine what a Friday or Saturday night here must be like. Parking won't be easy either. They do have a "private lot" that they share with the two or three other tenants of this building, but there's not really that many parking spaces. I would definitely return here for another meal... it was that good and I don't even know how to cook!

A typical chain restaurant: poor ingredients, nonexistent service, and I suppose the food-prep technically could be called "cooking". But to be fair, this place is for tourists and people who don't know better.

so i really like this place. it was my first ever experience with a mongolian style restaurant. personally i love the idea and i will be back. so this place is a little small but big enough for a good crowd. there really isnt a service to speak of other than drink refills. however the people working there are all very nice. the way it works is like most. u choose all ur ingredients then ur sauce and what u want it on.. rice or noodles, i believe they have some other options.. they cook it up and bring it out to u. they have a nice spread of items to choose from like pork, beef, chicken, scallops, tofu, and others i know i cant remember. as well as almost to many other options to fit in the small bowl they give u.. lol... its a great place for lunch or dinner. and at a decent price as well. and if ur like me and u eat a lot they have the endless bowl option for basically all u can eat for like 2 or 3 bux more than the cost of just one bowl. why would anyone not take advantage of that. all in all its good. if u happen to be in the area and u like this type of establishment then drop in and try it out.

Good stuff for the kids and us adults. For $10.99 (as of May 2011), you get to pick your protein (meat), spices, vegetables, sauce and starch (noodles/rice). Customize everything to get exactly what you want. If you like it a little hot, try the Dragon Spice.

  • Jason A.

Very cool concept! Pick your protein, seasoning, veggies, sauce, and starch. They cook it and bring it to your table when its done. I had the steak with the house steak seasoning, stir fry veggies, noodles, and an unbelievable honey soy sauce. BEWARE of the spoon sizes in the seasonings, if it has a small spoon then only sprinkle one spoon full over your protein. The smaller the spoon the spicier the seasoning. My girlfriend accidentally put two scoops of dragon salt on her scallops and it was almost too spicy for her to eat it. I would love to have a place like this in my city.

  • John C.

Good stuff for the kids and us adults. For $10.99 (as of May 2011), you get to pick your protein (meat), spices, vegetables, sauce and starch (noodles/rice). Customize everything to get exactly what you want. If you like it a little hot, try the Dragon Spice.
