Garlic chicken, so good!! I love this place. I have for years, and I miss it when I can't have their delicious garlic chicken. The beef with broccoli and fried wontons are amazing too. Sesame Chicken? Yum! Classic or veggie egg rolls? Yes please! The carry out service here is spot-on, and the dine-in service is executed promptly and well. If you're looking for a well-established, tried and true Hixson Chinese food fix, DEFINITELY add Formosa to your plans!

Where do I begin? How about with the decor, very Chinese to set the mood, but kinda of dark. Overall nice atmosphere with the fish tank but could use a update. Our server was very nice and attentive. The menu is pretty extensive, but we made a quick choice to do the dinner for two. It was a great deal, two entrees, two egg rolls, two bowls of soup, fried rice and two teas for 24.95. The wonton soup was good not great, the wontons with beef tasted great but the broth didn't have much flavor. The egg rolls are huge and full of meat and veggies. One entree was beef broccoli, very fresh and great taste. The broccoli and carrots were crunchy and meat was flavorful. The shrimp in lobster sauce was great. The shrimp were nice size, probably large shrimp, which is impressive for a combo meal. The shrimp were also cooked perfect, not rubbery or chewy, just firm and tasty. The reason for 4 stars and not 5, was the fried rice was extremely dry. You really needed some type of sauce to eat the rice. The wonton soup broth had no taste and they only offer unsweet Tea! Yes you heard me only unsweet Tea. We are in the south and for as many years as this restaurant has been open they should know in the south offer SWEET TEA! In closing if you like good, fresh, and tasty Chinese food, take your "cookies" to where you don't have to spend a "fortune" at Formsa.

Atmosphere is nice and relaxing. Service was good. A couple of times our tea got a little low. .but then again we're drinkers. Lol We got the combo for 2 people. That is a great deal with egg rolls, soup, 2 entrees and fried rice AND includes the tea. Overall a really good experience but here's why they didn't get 5 stars. The tea. . Why oh why don't they serve SWEET tea? ?? My hubby liked the wonton in the soup but didn't care for the broth. The other part that wasn't that good was the fried rice..the flavor was good but it was really dry.

GREAT SERVICE, DELICIOUS FOOD We found this restaurant with the assistance of our Yelp app. It is located in an unassuming shopping center off of the main highway. It was dark and mysterious inside and had a cool Asian vibe thanks to the rich decor. I love low lights as it just makes for a more relaxing environment. We start our meal with the crispy noodles and dipping sauce. We normally order spring rolls and chicken wings but these were not featured on the menu. My husband ordered the Governor's chicken with a serving of sweet and sour soup and I ordered a beef and vegetable dish with a light brown sauce, (easy on the sauce). We had a seasoned rice to share. Although it was described as a "fried" rice, it did not appear to be and was very light. We both enjoyed our meals very much. My dish was light and delicious with very tender beef. The vegetables were cooked to perfection, crisp and delicious. My husband's dish was cooked to his specifications, because he likes it very spicy. We shared his soup and it was very flavorful and not as oily as I experienced in the past. Our service today was flawless, (very attentive). We would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a nice Asian restaurant or just looking for a nice relaxing meal.

First cool thing, they were open on Christmas Eve. Yay. And a real Chinese restaurant. One that even notes regions and does not try to serve the Chinese with sushi, pad thai, and pho. And sit down. NOT A BUFFET. And with vegan and vegetarian options. All good things. So we came on Christmas Eve and decided it would be smart to be early. Arrived about 5:00pm with plenty of empty tables. When we left, there was a crowd waiting, so yay for a good decision. We were promptly seated, either booth or table. Place from the outside looks like nothing. On the inside it really looks old school Chinese restaurant. And a bit aged too. But not shabby or dirty. Just like the place probably has not changed much over the years. Chinese Homey. Yeah, that's it. We were given water and asked for the hot tea, which comes in a steel pot. WHICH IS HOT. Waitress has to explain how she got yelled at by someone for not warning them. The dumbing down of the people continues.... She mentioned that they have veggie egg rolls that are large, not spring roll size. Awesome. Bring it! We got two. We also asked for the hot mustard as I like it more than the sweet sauces. The hot mustard is awesome... with loads of horseradish and will clean your sinuses out. Yay. We asked for recommendations on the veggie dishes and settled on the Spiced Japanese Eggplant in Garlic Sauce. The Bean Curd with Black Bean Sauce. And the Vegetable Lo Mein. The Mother In Law ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken. She proclaimed the chicken was wonderfully tender and moist, and this was a great place we must return to. We found the Lo Mein to be nicely done, with a smoky taste. The other two dishes were great. Waters were promptly refilled. We were checked on. I missed her name, but out server was perfect. In the end... is it great Chinese? Well... maybe not great. But it is very good and the best I have had in Tennessee. And with the vegetarian options (and you can ask almost any dish to substitute tofu for the meat), this is a winner.

This is not your typical Americanized Chinese restaurant and certainly NOT the cheap feeding trough either. This place has authentic Chinese flavors and sauces prepared in the traditional Taiwanese way. Dishes are meant to be shared with friends and family so they are served family style. The food served here is freshly prepared and all very good. I say good and not great because there are better Chinese restaurants that we've been to in the big cities (San Francisco, New York, ...) but this is hands down the best Chinese food in this area. Don't let the strip mall location fool you. This is a good restaurant that has been in business for 30+ years which says something.

There are few non-buffet Chinese places here in ChattTown and even fewer decent Chinese food places. Formosa is impressive as it has been in business here for 30 years. The food is good and it's a very popular place. Went on a Friday night and the tiny place was jam packed. I've been before and enjoyed it. The BF and I went and ordered a couple of dishes. Had the special Won Ton soup for 2. I forgot these have fried won tons instead of steamed ones. I prefer the steamed kind. The broth was very flavorful though and full of veggies and lots of meat (pork, beef, chicken, shrimp). It was delish. Had the leftovers for lunch a couple of days later and it was still just as good. BF ordered a seafood special with scallops, crab, lobster and a white sauce. I tasted it and it was good, just not my favorite. I ordered the Wonderful Beef and it was well, wonderful. Comes on a sizzling platter with snow peas, mushrooms, water chestnuts and a delicious sauce that had just a little spice. I hadn't tasted this before and it was very good. Would definitely get it again. The fried rice that came with our meal was a bit old and dry, in my opinion though. I have to say I'm pretty biased when it comes to my Chinese Food. Being from LA and having had great Chinese food available at all hours of the day and night, I miss my So Cal Chinese fix, but Formosa will get me by.

The best Chinese I've found in the area. Love the crunchy fried noodles they give you when you first sit down. The Hot and Sour Soup is fantastic. Now I can't remember what I had today but I think it was Colonel Chicken maybe (no, not General Tso), with tofu subbed for the chicken. It was great. My wife had the garlic chicken subbed with tofu and it too was very good. I wish the restaurant was closer to our Ooltewah home so we could be regulars.

Strangely, one of my go-to places when visiting or passing through Chattanooga. Yes, it's much like any other American-Chinese restaurant on the surface, but the food always hits the spot. And I like the old-school ambiance.

Love this place . Food is great. Service always good. Love the Sesame Chicken. This is by far the best Chinese restaurant in Chattanooga. They have good wine too.

Not a buffet. ... really. It seems all of the Chinese restaurants in the South are buffet. This was a very nice place and very comfortable. Service was attentive and friendly. Food was very good. We will be back many times.

The food was horrible but to point out a few things, the fried pork was so hard we could not eat it. The garlic chicken for those of you who say it taste great what planet are you from. The over all service was terrible young kid said there was not fried rice and we had to wait but both tables next us received fried rice. Maybe it was just bad luck for us but I have to say food sucked.

The only good Chinese food in Chattanooga. Its not even close. There is no second place. It hard to explain why its so much better. Everything is made in house. Even the egg rolls... which are amazing! I love this food.

Love love this food!! It's by far the best Chinese food in Chattanooga!!! The portion sizes are huge. Great for take out or dinning in.

Only good Chinese in Chattanooga. End of story. There is no other good Chinese, which stinks... because this place couldn't be more out of the way. Still... I am going tomorrow with a friend because it is the ONLY good Chinese in Chattanooga. I love the egg rolls. I love the chicken with black bean sauce. Anyway. It may not be as good as West Coast Asian, but it is the best of what we have... so I give it 5 stars!

Don't let the strip mall appearance fool you: freshly prepared, tasty food. No canned veggies here. Terrific service. The hot and sour soup is a win, and the vegetarian options are yummy. I had the Bean Curd with Black Bean Sauce (think tofu with a kick), and my husband had the Mongolian Beef. Both were above par.

Me: I would like the silver shrimp please, but does it have bell peppers? I am allergic to them. Server: no I don't think so but I will put it on your ticket you're allergic. Food comes out COVERED in red bell peppers. Me:ummmm what is this red stuff on my shrimp? (After bf tasted and confirmed my worries) Server: uh, I think diced tomatoes. I will take it back and check. Server returned: yeah that was bell peppers. Are you know you were allergic to the red ones too. At this point I have almost allowed them to kill me once. No I do not want you to replace my food. That being said, I survived this place and will not be back.

Went in on a Friday evening and there were only a couple of occupied tables. Sat and sat and sat and nothing. We asked nicely for a server, because hey accidents happen. Still nothing for a while, and then a guy comes out and starts taking care of the folks that just walked in the door. Uh no thanks. Bye bye.

First time we dined in and it earned a strong 4 stars. The food met our expectations and we are fairly picky when it comes to Asian/Chinese food. The second time we did take-out and the food was dreadful! Not just bad, but hideously undigestable! We were so hoping we had found a decent Chinese restaurant! We went back and dined in again. It was not good. We weren't expecting much and everything just fell flat. The food had no flavor at all. We now eat at the Rice Box.

I'm at the restaurant now. There are many booths and tables available. Still I am waiting. This is clearly poor management. Four hostesses with little to do but tell patrons that there is a twenty minute wait. Un-bussed tables everywhere. It's Saturday night. This is poor.

This place is delicious!!!! Very good food with very tender meat. Favorites are mongolion beef, garlic chicken, shrimp velvet, and sizziling rice soup. Everything is so delicious and hot. The only thing is that the portions are small. However the nice staff and owner definitely make up for it. Would recomend this everyone!! The price is amzing too for such high quality food.

After we moved to Chattanooga a year ago, a friend of ours told us if we had to go eat Chinese, go to Formosa. My husband hadn't eaten Chinese in years due to bad experiences and poor quality food but our friend assured us that he would not be disappointed if we went there. So we went and the first thing I tried was the hot and sour soup. It was hands down the BEST hot and sour soup I've ever had in my life. Very fresh and flavorful and not syrupy like most other soups I've had. My husband got an eggroll with meat and I got the veggie eggroll. Both were excellent! Easily the best eggroll I've had. We shared the sesame chicken, which is a huge portion for 2 people. My husband loved it. The chicken was obviously cooked to order, hot and crispy! The sauce was delicious. Their fried rice was pretty typical of any other restaurant but the amazing entrees more than make up for it. The service has always been spot on. Everyone is friendly and on point. We have eaten there many times over the past year and I always find myself craving their food, especially the hot and sour soup! :)

We have been eating Chinese food many places in east and west coast. This restaurant is definitely one of the best, beyond our expectation. The food is very authentic with nice presentation that you can clearly tell the efforts being made. After talking to the owner, we realized that he has over 30 years experience running Chinese restaurant. The staffs are very nice and thoughtful, providing a cheerful service. The place is not big but let the people feel warm and cozy. We enjoyed very much and couldn't believe that we found it on our trip in Chattanooga. Highly recommend that anyone who likes Chinese food should not miss this one.

Ate there on Friday the 13th. Thought reviews would make it a good experience...it was not. Had hot & sour soup...it was ok but not spectacular. Next had an egg roll....which was just warm at best and all I could taste was the cabbage.....no veggies or shrimp....Yuk. Finally after the server said their Governor's Chicken was the same as Kung Pao Chicken, I ordered it. I specified extra spicy. Well this is the first time I got a Szechwan did that lacked any heat and was decidedly sweet than hot. Add to this the $1.75 charge for hot tea for one diner. Pretty awful experience!

Best Chinese in city, state. And traditional, old school dining, to boot. I've had friends who were servers here and they've shown me the kitchen. Immaculate. Mr. Lin, the owner, is usually there at night and is a wonderful host.

Visiting from out of town, friends introduced me to Formosa. I was expecting "fast food" Chinese food, given the prices, but was pleasantly surprised. Good quality, fresh (and generous) portions, hot (heat hot) dishes, and quick and nice service. Ordered the Mongolian Beef, Sizzling Rice Soup, and friends ordered the off-menu Chilean Sea Bass. The Mongolian Beef and Sizzling Rice Soup were delicious....a little on the salty side, but delicious nonetheless. The Sea Bass, on the other hand -- was AMAZING. Never had anything quite like it. Absolutely amazing. Highly recommend the Sea Bass. Goes for around $15 (?) but absolutely worth it. Unfortunately wasn't able to get a picture of it...because the picture shown in this entry doesn't do any justice. Lighting was a little dim, restaurant music choice a little odd at times, but it was a hustling/bustling mom & pop Chinese restaurant. I can certainly appreciate the homegrown touch to the place. It's been open almost 30 years....you don't find many (or any) places like that anymore...

If you like traditional american Chinese dining, this is your place. There are no buffets, the atmosphere is very traditional for a chinese restaurant. The staff are very and managerial crew that's been there since it opened over 20 years ago (to my knowledge). The best place to get american chinese food in the Chattanooga area.

A gem hidden in a little strip mall off the highway. They make vegetarian versions of most of the menu - just ask them when you first sit down and they'll explain all the options. The servers have always been patient and kind every time that I've eaten here. Dragon Roll Tofu highly recommended.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
