My parents lived in Texas for at least 30 years each (my Mom was born and raised in Texas). They both agree that Mexico Viejo is the best Tex-Mex restaurant they have tried in South Dakota. The food is great and plentiful. However the restaurant staff and presentation is nothing special.

An absolute "run of the mill" mexi-resto. Nothing unique or extraordinary about Viejo. If you're looking for a typical Americanized mexi-resto, you'll find it here. A lot of options. Maybe too many.

If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, you won't find it here. However, they do have some decent dishes. They're chips are tasty. On the other hand, their salsa is not that great. I would generally avoid the combinations that include tacos, chile rellenos, or enchiladas. Their burritos are decent although nothing to write home about. Their fajitas are quite good. Chile Colorado, Pollo Adobado, Guizado de Puerco in Tomatillo sauce, and Chile Verde (with pork) would be the dishes I would most recommend. Overall, the servings are generous. I had the Chile Verde tonight, and it was pretty tasty (as usual) although the verde sauce seemed to be a little too concentrated. Generally, I like to come here when I'm wishing for chips and salsa, and the dishes I named are good enough to keep me coming back.

Mexico Viejo is almost my favorite restaurant in Vermillion. Hot, home cooked, inexpensive, large portions, and "decently" authentic... Service is fast, friendly and attentive, and I've never been disappointed in my meal here, particularly at their low prices. Love you guys!!! Keep it coming!!

not authentic... waaay too many dishes. a resto cannot be good when the chef has to potentially cook a 100 different dishes in one night. food is not terrible but certainly not good... service is ok. nothing special. go to qdoba across the street.

It's one of my favorite places in town. Only disappointed once out of thirty times. The fajitas I typically have enough for two meals.

THIS IS NOT MEXICAN FOOD!!!!!! I feel so bad for the people of South Dakota for they have yet to even experience what real Mexican food tastes like! My husband and I asked the owner.."What gives??" Because I am Hispanic..and you know you can ask a fellow Hispanic what's really going on ;) He told us that "When they first moved there...the reception to their food was not good..so they had to change the menu to fit their taste"...This is so sad. Same thing with the Chinese food...

The drinks are good, but that's all I can stand there. I tried out a few places when I first moved here and this place is gross. There was a fly buzzing around me, the same song played on the stereo for the duration of my meal (I know it was the same because I speak Spanish and had the song nearly memorized when I left), and there's something weird in the way they make their food because it makes everyone I know bloated after eating it (and that's not how REAL mexican food is supposed to be).

I would rather eat at Taco John's than this place. Enough said.

Mexico Veijo is the best place in Vermillion to get some Mexican food! Go with the fajitas and you can't lose.

I'm pretty sure this may be considered Vermillion's first, real Mexcian restaurant-- and it's been a long time coming. I don't consider Recuerdo's a Mexican joint because of the overabundance of causcasian staff, its previous life as 1980s "Mexican" restauant, and the fact it has/had a salsa bar. Anywho... I'm going to go ahead and throw out a previous experience I had at Mexican Viejo closer to its opening some years back where I got sick. Today, I would categorize everything here as decent to mediocre. It is almost exactly what you would expect from a supposedly "authentic" Mexican restaurant serving hundreds ot meal combinations to hungry, college students. I can't say it's awesome food, but it's acceptable for what it is-- filling a much-needed void in a town with hundreds of voids.

This place might not look like much from the outside -- I'm pretty sure there was a broken window -- but inside it is very cheery, with brightly colored walls, a bar with TV and lots of booths. Though packed a bit tightly, but it's right across from campus so I assume they really try to sardine the kids in. I had the enchiladas verde, which was just three enchiladas on a plate for 10 bucks, but they were solid, although they stew the chicken with tomatoes, giving the chicken a pink, uncooked look. The verde sauce was more cream based that tomatillo based and it tasted like processed white cheese on top, but the whole effect was decent. Wish it had come with beans and rice for the price though. BF had the fajita platter which was tasty and had lots of meat, but there were only 3 tortillas served for the meal. They charge for chip refills. But an a-ok place in my book.

I feel bad saying this, because the staff is really nice, but this place just isn't good. In fact, this place has easily served me the most hell-awful food I have ever had the misfortune of partially consuming. People often tell me it's great, which is why I've given it three chances. No more! Every time I've entered, I've been assaulted with the smells of cleaning products, which is super unappetizing. Most importantly, the food has been bad every time I've been there. Bland, seemingly not fresh and not good-tasting. Plus, everything looks a little more grey and soupy than it should. Last time, I tried the chile relleno and it was unlike any I've ever had, in a really bad way. There was a chile in there, yes, but there was no fried egg batter at all! Instead, the chile was stuffed/toppped with a rather unpalatable, too-salty, light-colored, Velveeta-cheese-y sauce substance, which I actually had a really hard time swallowing. Yeah, it was kind of gross. It was topped with a sauce which had very little flavor. The beans are runny, the rice is mushy and neither has much taste. The service has been great every time, and I would've given more stars for that if the food weren't such a complete catastrophe. I can honestly say (barring some of my own late-night, under-the-influence kitchen shenanigans) that I have never had worse food anywhere in the world in my entire life. I realize I come from a place where I've had lots of good Mexican food, and this definitely affects my opinion, but I'll never eat here again. I just can't do that to my taste buds.

This is remotely mexican food, many things are unauthentic. Is it bland and missing important ingredients to appease the general public that's never had real Mexican food? Obviously, this won't be as good as Mexican places in the Southwest, but this is worse than the Mexican food on the East Coast. I've heard of a place in Yankton (from a Mexican-American man from East L.A.) that is really good, so you'd probably better go on a mini-road trip to Yankton if you want good Mexican food.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
