Loved stumbling into this time capsule of a restaurant. It was like stepping back in time to the early 60's or so. The food was simple but well-prepared for what it was (hamburger and onion rings for me, fish sandwich and salad bar for my husband.) The server was pleasant and getting the job done for quite a few tables. It was not fine cuisine but it was a welcome break from the highway.

Nice small town restaurant vibes. Slow paced and delicious. Had a craving for a breakfast burrito and they delivered, yummy.

Super-friendly waitress and cook! They did breakfast for me - at suppertime - and it was really good. The place has been open since 1951. Even has the original soda fountain. 5 stars for good food well done, and friendly conversation!

Really bad food. We were hopeful and hungry but $32 to feed a family of four, when three of the meals were grilled cheese sandwiches? Salad was a joke; waitress had never heard of vinegar and oil dressing. Regaled us with an amazingly bad family story of woe. Subway would have been far superior.

Thought we would support the local business instead of the restaurants along the interstate. I was hoping for homemade food but that's not the case here. Only thing that I would consider Real food was the mashed potatoes for my Hot Beef Sandwich, which was about the healthiest item on the menu. The beef was the commercial meat that is pre-sliced and liked put in the microwave to heat it up. Brown gravy is the powder that is mixed with water - very salty and fake tasting. Everything else was commercialized food. More expensive than what I would've thought. My husbands burger was smaller than the burger that came with my daughters kids meal? And the kicker - the kids menu said their meal comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. NO ice cream - all gone. they did offer fruit snacks - sorry but my kids will never eat that crap. Kids were disappointed too.

Swung in just to grab dinner. Had the buffalo burger on fry bread. I love fry bread. 1st time I ever had it was on a reservation where it was made from scratch. I totally ate it by itself and had lots of it. So when I saw a a buffalo burger on fry bread I had to give it a try. It's solid. Nothing amazing and the fry bread's disappointingly not hand made. Oh well. But it's a solid burger. If you've never had a buffalo burger and in the area, give it a try.

Just had breakwas t. Food was adequate, but you know service may be an issue when the sign that greets you also requests you have patience. With 3 wait staff on, and a max of 4 tables occupied, our male wait staff still never noticed an empty coffee cup, water glass, or empty plate needing to be removed. It was open at 7am though, so I would still say if it is the only place open, eat there. Just have patience.

Let's just say I really appreciated the staff and service at Star family restaurant. Even if you are just stopping by they treat you nicely (not like the folks at GTO diner or just called the diner). Dishes are adequately priced and they are the usual offerings for a diner: sandwiches, burgers, small soup and salad bar. Service was fast and with a smile. Food was good. If you are on the road between Sioux Falls and Rapid City and just happened to be by Murdo by lunch time, Star family restaurant will provide you with a proper break and you won't leave hungry.

This seems like a really nice family run place, but it just doesn't quiet have its act together as a restaurant. The waitresses were all young teenage girls and they were perfectly polite, but there was no apparent order to which waitress took the order, brought the food, refilled the coffee, and brought the check. All of our servers were helpful, but the whole system was needlessly disorganized and slow, and there were only 6 or so other customers. The food wasn't cheap for basic breakfast food, and the portions were surprisingly small. My stuffed hash browns were very good, but the portion just wasn't right for the price. I expect small amounts of meat, cheese, and vegetables when I order breakfast, but I never expect to be skimped on potatoes like I was here. I was ready to order within a minute of sitting down and I was done with my food within a couple minutes of receiving it, but I still wasted close to an hour at this place.

Im sitting in the star restaurant as I type this review. It smells like old crusty books/the home of a 90 year old woman who smokes 2 packs a day. Not very much to choose from on the menu and the cheddar brocoli soup resembled a pile of puke that I once saw in first grade.

Stopped in for a quick lunch while on the road, I had a grilled chicken sandwich with REAL mashed potatoes and my husband has the bison burger on frybread. My meal was reasonably priced ($6) and great, my husband enjoyed his burger but thought it was overpriced ($12). The atmosphere is nothing spectacular, typical small town diner. All their times, opening/closing/dinner specials are in CENTRAL time, if you're coming from the west be aware of that!

Nice old fashion family restaurant in the middle of South Dakota. Great place to stop if you are hungry and need a break from driving across the state. Nothing fancy about this place just a decent meal with good service. What we ate: 1) Chicken Sandwich (grilled chicken on bun with lettuce, tomato and mayo on the side) + one trip to the salad bar 2) The Big Bird - grilled turkey sandwich with cheese and tomato + one trip to the salad bar 3) kids meals were corn dogs with apple sauce

I'd have checked in here, just so people would be sure i actually went, but there's no cell service at all in Murdo (well, enough that your phone cycles through zero bars and No Service, but never enough to even make a phone call). Anyway, Star Family Restaurant is to where we were directed when we asked at our hotel where we might be able to find a restaurant that didn't mind a toddler and had at least one vegetarian option. The staff is ridiculously nice, which is the status quo for this part of the country, but still appreciated. They have a veggie burger on the menu, and it's actually pretty decent. My dining companion was impressed with the buffalo burger, declaring it perfectly cooked and quite tasty. The pie was pretty good too, though by 6pm they were already out of banana cream. I feel back docking a star from this place, as i'm sure it's the best for miles around, and it's just the local culture, but... the fruit cup was just canned peaches. The lemon meringue pie somehow had marshmallow in the meringue. One of the salad bar offerings was described as 'pudding', and contained coconut, mandarin oranges, and marshmallows in some creamy base (possibly actually pudding, i didn't dare taste it for fear of developing diabetes on the spot). Anyway, yeah, if you find yourself hungry in Murdo, SD, you can do a lot worse than Star Family Restaurant. The apple pie is pretty good, and has no marshmallow-meringue.

"This seems like a really old place," said my 7 yr old. It is, with slightly worn out furniture and just one waitress. She was really friendly, and the buffalo burger ($11, $15 on fry bread) was good, but it took a while for service.

We needed a good meal while passing through town, and this was a good choice and a welcome break from the fast food on I-90. Good food, good service, good prices. The salad had more veggies than I had expected (cucumber, carrots and broccoli - usually at places like this it's just a pre-mix, and this wasn't), and the meat on the French dip was very good. The bacon on the blt was slightly overlooked, but still fine, and the pie was homemade.

Good food at a good price. We were here for breakfast and were not disappointed. The chocolate chip pancakes were very good. I had the stuffed hash browns, which were quite good and made with obviously fresh mushrooms & green peppers, etc. Not a fancy menu, but a solid traditional diner, with real iced tea!

Was expecting better service, I mean it wasn't terrible but I felt I was an inconvenience because when we entered we were the only patrons and the staff was all sitting at a table. Food was ok, not fantastic. Men's bathroom toilet was clogged. I had a ham and cheese sandwich with fries. Wasn't excellent but better than bad. Hubby had a buffalo burger, he said it was ok. Nothing to write home about but good.
