I had the something, something, Dakota burger. Doesn't matter what they call it, just order the sonofabitch! Amazing burger with grilled onions, cheese, enough bacon to stop your heart, enough jalapeños to get it going again, and enough grease to make you feel as if you have just finished a shift at Jiffy Lube. This may just be the best burger without green chile I've ever had. The place is cool, the people friendly, and the prices fair. Wish I had enough time on this trip to go back again.

Love the burgers and laid back atmosphere. Eating on the deck on a nice day is fun. Good cold beer. My favorite cheeseburger.

The BEST Hamburger in all of SD!!! We were there for Sturgis 75, spent 6 days riding and eating in at least 5 different towns, rode almost 1000 miles in the Black Hills and our favorite meal of all... the hamburgers we had at Lewie's! Nestled aside the mountain on the loop from Spearfish Canyon to Lead is this amazing roadside joint. Facing the road with a view of the bikes rolling by, the service was great on the deck, the interior is almost a museum of odds and ends, and the hand-pattied, hot, fresh burgers were the best!!! We plan to make this a "MUST" on our annual pilgrimage to Sturgis Bike Rally from now on.

Just as the amount of stars states, this place is A-OK. The burgers were good, but not excellent. The onion rings were not hot. The waitress wasn't too friendly...she could probably tell we were from out of town. Just a burger joint... not a place to dive out of the way to get to.

Love this place. Great burgers. Cold beer. Great drinks. And the service is awesome. Locals like me come often.

Ate here twice during Rally week. Late both times. Food good, beer cold. Prompt service.

The place doesn't look like much at first sight, but some of the best burgers I've ever had...tasty and done to perfection. French fries are really good too, light and crispy. Great place to pull the bike over and get some great food and beer on their patio.

Now this place is the BEST BURGER IN THE BLACK HILLS! Were greeted as we walked in the door and guided to our seats. We loved the décor, it had TV's everywhere including the bathroom's. We both ordered burger's, hers was the bacon cheese burger and could not rave enough. I picked the mushroom swiss and wow the meat was home made, seasoned, and what a standout. My fries were great and my wife loved her onion rings. Great service, everyone around us seemed to be extremely happy. This is a must stop! Anyone thinking that the owner and her staff is crabby ever must have been crabby before showing up, must not of had a good Christmas.

Looks like a dive, but excellent choice if you want a great burger! I had bacon cheeseburger and hubby had southwest Dakota burger: both amazing! Friendly waitstaff, outdoor seating on a beautiful evening, plus delicious food adds up to a memorable dinner. We would definitely stop here again!

Amazing food and great service! We stopped by Lewies on our way home after a great weekend in the Hills, it seemed like somewhat of a local joint and that's what we like to try. The burgers were delicious, the environment had a really nice sports bar kind of feel, perfect for watching the game on a Sunday afternoon, we will definitely be back on our next trip!

Awesome burgers for a very reasonable price! Well worth beautiful scenic drive to get here! The onion rings are great too.

We pulled into Deadwood around nine at night and were absolutely starving-luckily we had done some research before hand and decided on Lewie's. After a slightly harrowing drive in the dark (it comes at you out of nowhere), we arrived ready to eat, and Lewie's did not disappoint. The menu is simple-but covers all the basics and does them justice. A favorite was their new addition to the menu-the Dakota burger. What made it so great was the chili sauce-also great for dipping fries into. The Rueben, bacon cheeseburger, and onion rings were also delicious. The walls of Lewie's are also packed with tons of momentos to look at-including old mining carts, snowshoes, and tons of beer cans. Lewie's is great for a quick bite of food (though you will leave stuffed), and for late arriving travelers, has the advantage of being open until 11 at night.

Arrived at our condo in Lead late on a Saturday. Went back to Deadwood looking for dinner, but Main Street was mass humanity and the wait for dinner was going to be an hour at any restaurant. I'd remembered seeing Lewie's on the way past. Figuring you can't go wrong with a place called "burgers and brews," we went back. We weren't disappointed. Lewie's is a unique roadhouse. You don't build these. They evolve. Gravel parking just off the highway. Weathered deck with beer umbrellas over the tables. Ample TV screens inside. Tables on homemade pedestals of tires and wheels. Locals at the bar having a good time. Foosball. Hamm's beer sign in the window. Yeah, it had the feel and look. It was June, so it was still just the locals on the night we stopped in. The waitress was typical roadhouse - prompt, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. "If you've never been here, we're known for our burgers. They're made from a full half-pound of fresh ground beef." Well, hell, bring 'em! Went with the mushroom and Swiss. The wife and I split the burger and ordered sides - nice fresh salad for her and an ample order of beer battered rings for me. Had I been thinking, I would've ordered the burger "medium," since it came well-done. Still very good, though. The grandsons had no complaints either. As I've gotten older my taste in beer has evolved. I figured a place with "brews" in its name would have a beer menu on the table, but no. Not being from the area, and not wanting to spend a lot of time asking about beer, I went with the Shock Top Belgium. It came in a quart-sized Mason jar, nicely drawn with a perfect head. Glad I decided to split the burger! That was A LOT of beer. The vote was 4-0 that Lewie's was a place deserving of a return trip.

Can I give a bad review if I walked out before I was served? People who work there are so crabby, I decided I couldn't take their rudeness. After standing inside the front door for several minutes we were pointed toward a lower seating area where there is a sign stating that we needed to wait to be seated. After standing there several minutes, one waitress said to wait a couple minutes while she found a place for us. Less than ten seconds later a different waitress chastised us for waiting, saying we had to find our own seats. We left when we got to out table and it was filthy!

Did not disappoint. Had pizza burger special and it was great. A kids menu would be good because burgers are pretty big. Good beer battered fries and large beers are quart mason jars.

We stopped here after our road trip into the Black Hills. We ate other burgers at different places in the area but these were the best. I had the bacon cheese burger, it was juicy but not under cooked, it had a large amount of cheese and an ample serving of tasty bacon. I got the small side salad which was decent for the small $2 price tag. The mushroom & swiss was also enjoyed by one of the kids. My neice tried the cod and fries and liked that as well. We sat outside on the patio and enjoyed the atmosphere and the local flair. Drop in have a great burger.

Lewie's is awesome. We came here after visitng Mount Moriah Cemetery in Deadwood. Unfortunately I made the decision to run uphill to the grave of Seth Bullock without realizing how far it was. I was pretty tired and only ordered the wings. My family had burgers and they were much better than anywhere else we have been in the Hills. My wings were fantastic as well, not too hot but had great flavor. It was quite peaceful around 8-9 at night with the creek across the street. Eating outside in the Black Hills is something that never gets old. The sound of Harleys driving past let you know right where you were. I would love to come here again when I find myself in Deadwood.

My girlfriend, dog, and I stopped in on our way through the Black Hills on May 20, 2014. The burgers were delicious and there was outside seating for us with the dog. When the check came the prices did not match the menu and the server told my girlfriend they had not yet updated the menus. I can't help but feel we were deliberately overcharged for being from out of town.

We ate here twice in 3 days.. The southwest Dakota burger is the bomb! Add a bloody Mary with the complimentary beer backer and you'll need a wheel barrel and a designated driver to get home. Great servers, atmosphere and customers, everyone is on their way somewhere and is happy to tell you about it! Highly recommend anytime your in their neck of the woods!

Bacon cheese burger and onion rings, washed down with a tap beer. If that's not living large, nothing is. Both were very good and the atmosphere is great. I will stop here next time I am in or even near Deadwood.

A must stop every time we are in the Black Hills. Not a huge menu, but they don't need it-their burgers are very, very good. A nostalgia/biker/miner/classic/sports bar type theme (I know that's really not a theme) but what it is, is good food, cool atmosphere with a patio and beer-a theme that should serve most people well

Delicious, enormous burgers.... Delicious, enormous beers.... Friendly faces and lots of TV's made this Wisconsin girl feel right at home.

My husband and I finally made it back to this restaurant, as it had been many years...we loved it. Burgers were huge, delicious and inexpensive!!! Fries were great and drinks were good and reasonably priced. Kids menu looks like our kids will love it also. And wi-fi!!! We LOVED it and will absolutely return. (Although the parking was goofy and I can't imagine what we'd do if drove all the way up and then couldn't find a place to park!)

Stopped in after reading reviews on yelp and we made the right decision. Definitely not the touristy place, but great food and cold beer. The only reason I docked a star is the waitress didn't offer the cheese choices with the gourmet grilled cheese (as mentioned on the menu of choice of cheese) that my dining partner had, but still tasty. The onion rings were good, but I prefer the thin homemade kind, these were much thicker with heavier breading and tasted like they may have been the frozen type?? The southwest Dakota burger I had was huge, messy and awesome with a good hit of spice. The coleslaw was the good sweet and creamy style. Overall good food and nice view outside.

Great bacon cheese burger and good service. Had an ice cold Grain Belt Premium. Highly recommended for a cool local hangout. They have plenty of TV, which make it good for watching sports

Food is good. Has corndogs, which is always a plus. I got splinters in the back of my leg when I scooted in on a wooden bench, but the friendly service more than made up for it.

DeadWORST. You would think a rest with the name Burger in the title would know how to make one. But our party of five had the Dead WORST burgers on the planet. They will not make a rare burger (state law darling) So I asked for as close to rare as they could make it. They had to have intentionally see what I would tolerate as it was burned to a dry cinder. Tastleless inedible garbage. My daughter in law, vegatarian, ordered a grilled cheese....it came with Bacon, which they offered to remove...but then brought another. This place is made for the non-returning tourist who will eat the worst of road food. There could not be a customer on the planet senseless enough to eat here twice. Pure garbage all the way around. I am sorry I can't give negative stars. This is the WORST.

I wish I had a photo for this place (I'll have to take one later) because it's so cute. It used to attract the workers of Homestake Mine, but since that's closed, it seems to attract more skiers, bikers and just run-of-the-mills. As of two years ago, anyway, you got your beers in cute mayo jars, and they had a "Jar Club" where if you saved your "Jar Cards," you got one free after so many, but I don't think they still do that. The pub-grub has always been good. Big, juicy hamburgers, great fries, fast service, hot food. Not a big menu, just enough snacks to stave you off. Since it used to cater to the miners, a bunch of neat memorabilia and antiques are mining-oriented. The building, in the bar side, is sort of A-frame shaped, so look above your head, and you'll find a bunch of interesting stuff related to mining: a steel mining car, old head lamps. Or if you just want food and don't want to be bothered by bar patrons, you can sit on the addition to the right of when you walk into the door (but that's no fun). The place is very small though, but I like that as it makes it more cozy. Sometimes Lewie runs specials. I think I might have tried chislic here once. There's also a great patio with a fabulous view for in the summer/fall. One thing though is that I've never been here at night, only lunchtime and happy hour, so I can't attest to the crowd.

Lewie's is a local favorite, located just outside Lead. It has the most beautiful scenery--just outside our sleepy little town is a gorgeous view of the forest. Inside they have tons of seating as well, and let's not forget about the incredible burgers and onion rings. It is easy to forget about healthy eating while in the Black Hills, but especially here. Summers are, like everywhere else in this area, the busiest, so you might have to wait a while for a table or your burger, but relax and soak in the local color. There aren't many places left like Lewie's, and I hope it will be around for a very long time.

Decent food. I like the rustic atmosphere. Great out-door seating. Service always seems to have a attitude. My last experience: I had a beer served in a fun canning jar (I like this) about half way thru my beer a bee feel into my beer. when i asked for a new one the sever (which I think is wife of owner) said I would be charged. I think that was a horrible way to handle this. It is not the fault of the customers. In stead of filling up my mug to the level at which said bee fell into (maybe .$.50 there cost in beer it was Amber Bock) I had to throw my beer away and left angry. I have not been back since.

My husband and dog and I are in the Black Hills for the week doing some backpacking and decided to head up to the Deadwood area for a day to see what was around... we checked some Google reviews to see what was good for lunch in the area and Lewie's was by far rated #1, and for obvious reasons. Quirky fun biker type of place on the side of the highway with a very small menu, which usually makes us think that they can do a few things very well - just our kind of menu. We both ordered the bacon cheeseburger on the suggestion of the verrrry nice and fun waitress because they apparently do burgers very well. Bottom line, best burgers in the Black Hills, at least of those we tried. The burgers were MASSIVE, juicy, flavorful and filling. Almost best of all, if you eat outside on the deck your pooch is welcome to join you. The waitress, who again, was awesome, said that the place fills up during the Sturgis Rally and also during Deadwood Nights (a car show weekend), so just keep that in mind. Also, everything on the menu was incredibly affordable - just $6.50 for the biggest bacon cheeseburger I've ever seen.

Good food, nice atmosphere. There are lots of tvs here and it's easy to watch sport events. The food is all pretty cheap. $5.50-$7.00 for a 1/2 lb burger and extras. Sandwiches ran about the same. You can easily get away with less than $10 a head if you do just food, probably more if you include drinks though. A fairly small menu and most of it is bar food, so don't expect a ton of entrees offered. This place is excellent after a long day of activity (skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, etc) and I would go back.

Amazing and very large burgers. I had one with bacon, grilled onions and blue cheese. Ate here September 2012, beautiful weather with an awesome view of the mountains.

Lewies is a unique location and kind of a fun hangout. I don't know where people get the idea that they have the best burgers in the Black Hills. The burgers are good, but pretty basic, nothing fancy. It's pretty typical bar food that you can get most anywhere. They don't have a huge beer selection, but I do like the "big jar" size. The service can be great or horrible. On one occasion, I came here for lunch and it took a very long time to get my food. After eating, I asked for my check twice and the waitress never brought it. I had to go up the bar and ask to pay. Parking can be a pain because the lot is small and it's dangerous getting in and out from a highway on a blind curve.

The Northern Hills are my second home and I have spent a lot of time at Lewie's. This place is a true bar/grill. Very good burgers and reasonably priced beer. It is easy to be comfortable at the bar, a table or a booth. Great stop after a day of snowboarding or fly fishing. They have a friendly staff, friendly people and it's basically impossible to be disappointed if you're looking for a good burger, beer and atmosphere. Depending on the season it is usually frequented by locals with a mix of tourists.

We were in South Dakota for vacation the first week of November. Being huge Packers fans, we needed a place to grab lunch that had Sunday Ticket to watch the game! We searched packerseverywhere.com who listed Lewies as a place to stop to catch the game. We decided we wanted to check out the Deadwood area anyways, so we ditched out hotel in Rapid City and hit the road to Lead, SD. When we arrived, we were greeted by the owner, Lewie, sporting a Green Bay Packers t-shirt, and saw all the Packers merchandise all over the walls, so obviously we were excited to see we were within good company. Don't worry if you're not a Packers fan, this place has TV's EVERYWHERE (including the bathrooms) and they will gladly throw on any game you want to watch. The staff was awesome, very friendly, and fun. They really made us feel like regulars even though, we don't drink much and were about 1,000 miles from home! The bar is themed after all the mining in the area and has a lot of really cool mining and lumberjack equipment from long ago. Food was good, I heard the burgers are the best in the area, but I tried the roast beef sandwich and we split some cheese curds. The food really was much better than we were expecting at such cheap prices. I did have one of their giant quart sized mason jars of beer during the game which was kind of cool and reasonably priced as well. We will definitely come back to Lewie's if we're ever back in the area!

Best burger I have had in a long time, and that includes my own. It was a quiet night, which from what I understand was good for us, quick, wonderful service. Loved it.

Great little place outside of Lead, food is good, beer is cold, servers are personable. Sit on the patio and wave at the truckers who blast their air horns as they drive by. I do believe you will like this place with the laid back atmosphere. Ride your Harley if you have one!

We were there during the final days of Sturgis so the place was packed. The burgers were awesome and the service was friendly.

Fun atmosphere, great burger... You can't go wrong with this choice! Hubs loved the onion rings and Shiner Bock beer. I loved my mushroom swiss burger. Even has outdoor deck seating with a great view! If you have trouble finding it using the map just drive a little further down the road. The location on the map is a little off.

The Food was excellent. The Atmosphere is nice. Eating outside is the preferred option. It sits on the side of a major scenic road outside of Lead, SD. The food is excellent and the service is great. Only eat here if you don't mind being surrounded by smokers and a good amount of bikers. A great place to have a few beers, a great sandwich or burger.

Wow! I would drive from Denver just for a burger. My husband and I went the first time last August on our trip to Sturgis and I can't believe that we never stopped before. I now compare every burger to Lewie's and have yet to find one that can compete. If you are in the area, I highly recommend it!!
