We visited this location on the 4th of July. It was very busy due to being close to the fire work display. The staff was friendly and surprisingly fast. Although it was very busy, we got our sandwiches quickly and they were made accurately.

The Indian Taco was awesome! Definitely recommend it.
This was so delish! We had a skillet and the other breakfast special. They were really good. spearfish canyon is beautiful. The service is very good and they help you locate the falls on the map. A great place to stop in a beautiful area.
When I get my mind on eating something specific, it's hard for me to let it go. A local told me about the Indian tacos here, stating they are "the best ever". So of course i had to eat it (and to figure out what it was). When we went, the small hut that says "Indian tacos" was closed and so I thought I was out of luck. Actually, you can order it at the cafe too which has a solid breakfast menu. I didn't realize this until the next day though (when I called to ask about it and confirm they were available), so I drove back to try it before heading out. It's pretty good! I've never had Indian tacos before so I can't compare them to others. It reminded me of a more delicious version of a Mexican pizza than what I think of as tacos. Fry bread is pretty light not oily, a nice chew to it. The toppings are pretty delicious, with ingredients that would go on a 7 layer dip. Taken all together it was a filling meal and I'm glad I tried it. If you're in the area, this place is worth stopping at for a meal. Locals and tourists alike eat here. People are super friendly. Fill up and buy some Oprah approved caramels they sell in the store, then head out to the spearfish canyon.

I had the something, something, Dakota burger. Doesn't matter what they call it, just order the sonofabitch! Amazing burger with grilled onions, cheese, enough bacon to stop your heart, enough jalapeños to get it going again, and enough grease to make you feel as if you have just finished a shift at Jiffy Lube. This may just be the best burger without green chile I've ever had. The place is cool, the people friendly, and the prices fair. Wish I had enough time on this trip to go back again.
Love the burgers and laid back atmosphere. Eating on the deck on a nice day is fun. Good cold beer. My favorite cheeseburger.
The BEST Hamburger in all of SD!!! We were there for Sturgis 75, spent 6 days riding and eating in at least 5 different towns, rode almost 1000 miles in the Black Hills and our favorite meal of all... the hamburgers we had at Lewie's! Nestled aside the mountain on the loop from Spearfish Canyon to Lead is this amazing roadside joint. Facing the road with a view of the bikes rolling by, the service was great on the deck, the interior is almost a museum of odds and ends, and the hand-pattied, hot, fresh burgers were the best!!! We plan to make this a "MUST" on our annual pilgrimage to Sturgis Bike Rally from now on.

Latchstring Restaurant

10619 Roughlock Falls Rd

Reviews:
The Latchstring Restaurant is located along the Spearfish Canyon scenic drive at the town of Savoy. It is the only place to eat along that route that I could find, and was recommended by my trusty Black Hills guidebook, so I decided to give it a try. It is just a few minutes from Roughlock Falls, so the two stops go hand in hand. When we arrived for lunch the dining room was mainly empty. We were seated inside, but since it was such a pretty day in hindsight we should have asked for the patio. We walked out there and it was much nicer, with beautiful views. This hotel and restaurant have been here a long time and the place is decorated with antique items and the menu has some cute stories about the history and their famous pet rooster. It's all very charming. Service was slow enough that had I been in a rush I may have gotten upset, but we were happy to just sit and relax. It was well worth the wait because everything we ordered tasted fresh and homemade. The soup and accompanying corn cakes in particular were out of this world. It was nice when we asked a question about the soup and the server asked the hostess, "did she put ham in it today?" like the recipe is constantly changing depending on what the cook wants to do. That's just awesome. We mainly ordered sandwiches. I had the flatbread with mozzarella, tomatoes, and pesto. Overall everyone was really happy with our meals. I'd absolutely recommend this stop for a meal along the scenic drive route. (Luckily it's good, because it's your only choice unless you packed a lunch).
Nestled deep in scenic Spearfish Canyon, the Latchstring offers spectacular vistas from their patio seating area, soothing sounds from the nearby falls, great service, and surprisingly good food at reasonable prices. I say surprisingly because this is a tourist area, folks flock here from all over the world, and the Latchstring wouldn't need to try that hard but they do. We stopped in for lunch during a recent m-cycle trip to all SD county seats. Laurie was delighted with her Black Hills Trout Caesar Salad - perfectly grilled trout on a bed of crispy fresh romaine lettuce ringed with tomatoes, onion, cucumber and served with a tasty house-made dressing. She added a Johnny Apple hotcake which we found to be moist and flavorful and bursting with apple flavor. I liked the Flatbread Sandwich. The flavor combination of mozzarella, basil, tomato, and pesto worked well with the turkey but the fried flat bread overwhelmed some of that. If I were to order this again, I'd get it open-faced and eat it like a taco. The star was the side of Italian Bean soup that came with it! Fresh green beans and tomatoes in a rich broth with white beans. We're big on dessert and the mountain berry pie sounded too good to pass up. House made flaky pie crust filled with an ample amount of fresh berries in a not too sweet sauce and sided with whipped cream and mini scoop of New York vanilla ice cream. Delish! Our server, Sarah, was super friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and happily talked with us about the area. On a down note with patio seating, the flies were numerous and vexatious as they seem to be in SD. We'll definitely stop in again next time we're in The Hills!
It had been a long time since I'd been to the latchstring and it seems that things have gone downhill. Our server apparently didn't like her job very much. Even though the place had few customers, our table went largely ignored. Our drinks sat empty, our orders got mixed up, and even though we had mentioned the nuisance of the flies buzzing our heads and walking through our food, she continuously left the screen door open. The food was decent but grossly overpriced due to it being the week of the bike rally. Also there was no children's menu. I'm sure we ate here on an off night, but I thought I'd make a note of our experience.
