Great atmosphere, great menu with lots of options and they give a military discount. Service was pretty good. It took a bit longer to get our order taken then we felt was a reasonable amount of time, but food came out quickly after order placed. Great kids menu and it didn't come out steaming hot, perfect for the kids to dig right in. We will be going back

This is my favorite Mexican style food place in the area. Try the fries in place of rice, they are great. Also, ask for white cheese sauce to go along with your salsa and chips, awesome. I've been here dozens of times over the years and always enjoyed whatever food I get.

We went on a Sunday for lunch. Horrible service, food took forever and was cold when we got it. Food was blah.

Yucatan is a great place for lunch, I've never been for dinner. I typically get the taco salad, which is really good. All the food is affordable, and the staff is always friendly even if they are super busy, which is the usual during lunch hours. Great bottomless chips and salsa, with very little gross cilantro in the salsa. I definitely enjoy this place over other Mexican places in town.

Best Mexican restaurant in town. Not the best Mexican food I've ever had but it's always good, hot and quick. Great serving large parties but do not have a separate space. Menu is typical. They are really nice and festive. Love the chips and salsa. Not usually a wait except occasionally on Fridays and Sunday lunch.

Being Californian, I don't want to be *too* harsh on this place. The waitress was great! But I don't quite understand why there's only 2 waitresses working when the place seems super busy? Unlimited chips and salsa! (No tapatio. :( ) Chalupa... is on a taco shell..... And my carne asada tacos weren't as great. And I was very disappointed. I'm assuming the meat was probably boiled, not grilled? Because the meat's texture was notttttt killin ' it compared to my California tacos. Ay yay yay yay yay. Wanted: new chef?

Very good food and pretty cheap. Lunch specials are amazing. Service can be hit and miss. Overall I enjoy dining here.

Yucatan looks a lot better on the inside than it does from the outside, so do not be afraid to try it! I have learned that Mexican food in Sumter does not really exist, but this restaurant has pretty good Tex-Mex. The decor is very nice and they have a large menu for you to chose from. I enjoyed their queso dip, and their portions are very generous. All in all this is not a bad place to eat, but not my favorite "Mexican" restaurant in town.

The workers are nice. I was with a large group of people for a going away party that took up three tables. I think there were one or two guys that took our orders and they pretty much remembered who ordered what. The food didn't look appealing, but it was actually very good. I ordered the #8 on the lunch menu, which was two chicken quesadillas with Mexican rice, lettuce and guacamole. They warm up their chips (Or maybe they actually make them?), but you have to ask for sour cream or guacamole for dip. A couple of the items take some time to make, but most of them are made in a decent amount of time. Overall this is a nice restaurant, though it's a shame they don't pull out maracas and sombreros when they sing "Happy birthday" to people.

Went there the past weekend with my wife. Ordered a burrito with chile relleno and my wife had a chimichanga. The rice and beans were delicious! Also, they serve chips and salsa prior to your meal. The salsa wasn't too hot or too mild. The meal was cheap and tasted terrific. I will be back.

Mexican food is pretty popular across SC. It seems that there is a couple of Mexican restaurants in every town, and 4 here in Sumter. Jose's doesn't really stand out from the crowd. They are located in Gateway Plaza, a shopping center across from Wal-Mart. Yucatan is everything you would expect from a Mexican place, good, cheap food, $6-$8 per meal, waiters are very pleasant, and unlimited chips and salsa for every table. This is a pretty big place, with enough seating for about 200 people.

All the Mexican joints are the same out here (kind of not good compared to what I am used to out West), but I have found an item on the menu that is just like they make em in Me He Co....try the 'tacos de asada'....just corn tortillas and good ole grilled steak. They come with a side of cilantro, onions, and some refried beans. They also make some super awesome margaritas. The waiters are very cool, too. Good customer service is rare in this town. And the prices are decent.

San Jose is one of those places that uses the standard menu that you'll find in Mexican restaurants all across the US. The waiters and staff are always nice and friendly. They'll bring chips and salsa to the table but ask for some of the green chili salsa for a little heat (very good on the food!) and mix it in with the red. I don't know if they'll do it for all the drinks but I always get sweet tea and they would bring you a to-go cup if asked.

one of the better mexican spots in town. they have huge beers for $2 and this meal called mojocajte (spelled something like that) it is a huge stone bowl of steak, chicken, shrimp, chrozo, and onions. i still cant eat the whole thing. and it is all meat. cant beat the price for it either. san joses is now called yucatan. i havent eaten there since it has changed names. great place for groups and people who like to watch sports. they have big screen tvs and a large bar.

We came here from Phoenix and I almost gave up before I started on finding decent Mexican food here. I'm glad we came to Yucatan! The prices are great and the food is amazing! I'm not going to say it's as good as what you can find in Phoenix, but it will tide me over until I take a trip back to the Southwest!

My family eats here once a week for the last 10 years. Never had a problem with anything. This is one of the best eating places in Sumter. Clean, staff very friendly and helpful. When I have family in town we always try to eat here.

We used to eat here once to twice a week. Recently we ordered the same thing as normal which is the chicken flautas, no salad with rice. We ordered a cheese dip as well. My wife went to pick it up and came home to find we had paid $16 for 4 flautas, a cheese dip and a bag of free chips. We called and told the guy on the other end of the phone (who happened to be the manager) what happened and his response was he didn't take the order. He then said it doesn't come with rice. I told him we had ordered the same thing for almost a year and when we didn't get a salad we were offered beans or rice with no charge and he said that was correct. He then tried to show me a menu. Really? So they offer it but don't give it to you when you get it to go. He never apologized for the mixup or for the mistake. I told him to refund the money. He looked confused and said I have refunded your money. He never even offered a solution. If it's not actually offered, why do so? Customer service here is poor to say the least. Good luck if you choose this place when there are plenty of other places just as good. Food is manageable but not the best. It's close to our house and why we used to eat there often. I've heard this has been done to others so make sure you check your takeout before leaving.

This is an OK place. The chips and salsa, as someone said before, are very generic. Nothing special there. The guacamole is very good. My husband had the molcajete which he says was good (not greaaaat as he usually raves forever when something is slightly up from the bar). I had a combo with chalupa (good), burrito and quesadilla. Again, OK but whatever grill they use I could taste metallic in my mouth, eeeek! I will give it another try.

Awesome Mexican, fast & friendly service, great prices. My hubby and I came in here for lunch. He had the lunch fajitas & I has the 3 enchiladas. I was skeptical because the prices were so low but the food was very good!! Two teas & two lunches for $12 and some change, we both left stuffed... can't beat that.

We finally got around to trying Yucatan, and I'll admit it, I liked the food. I can't say I was raving, but it was still tasty and I definitely enjoyed it. Enough that we made two trips (though I'm writing my first review about it). Trip number one I went with the Tacos. Generic I know, but as this is a "staple" amongst most Mexican restaurants, I figure if a location can't get these right. Then there is little hope for their other dishes. They weren't AMAZING, but the meat had some flavoring (maybe a bit too much was my throw off?) so they get an "A" for effort. That and they really fill those suckers to the brim. So you're getting your money's worth in a stuff taco for sure. The chips and dip are generic, I've only had one location that was making me eat them up left and right (in Middle GA), but the others have just been your basic warm chips. I do find that some Queso/Cheese deep livens them up a bit, and thankfully Yucatan has this as an option. (Most locations do) On trip one, I honestly would have stopped at 2 or 3 stars, though likely 3 because the atmosphere was also nice and the service is good. The second trip was a bit better, so up to 4 stars now! For this meal I had the fajitas, better flavor than the ground beef in the tacos, and large bowl of lettuce and tomato, which is usually "limited" at locations like Chili's where it's a spoon full of each. Plus they come with Nachos. Who hates nachos?!? They do not come with shredded cheese, but a quick request and the waitress brought it right over, so bonus points again on good service. Just enough meat served to fill all three tortillas, and very filling. Definitely can't complain. Personally, and no I don't work for them (I'm air force - LOL), I'd choose El Amigo over this location, however I will be coming back since my girl likes this one more, and they have Nachos with their Fajitas! :-D

For Tex-Mex at a good price in Sumter there is only one true choice. (Literally there are 4, but this is by far the best) The staff is friendly and quick, the price is always right ,and the food is great. You will want to recommend this place to everyone

C'mon folks, this isn't a 5 star restaurant. Don't get me wrong, it's good food, but I didn't see or eat anything that sets them apart from any other decent mexican joint. I've only been here once for dinner on my way through town. Clean place, friendly service; nothing bad to say about them, but a restaurant has to EARN 5 stars. 3 stars means average in my book, and that is a fair description of this place. I ordered the beef fajitas and it came with a small plate of bean and cheese nachos, which was unique. The chips and salsa were typical. The fajitas were good (plenty of meat), but they weren't sizzling when they were brought out. Prices seemed quite reasonable. A big sign on the door said kids eat free on Thursdays. Would I eat here again? Sure.

Have a craving for Tex-Mex food and being stuck in Sumter makes for few choices; however, Yucatan is by far the best option available in the local area and will leave you more than satisfied. I have been to Yucatan quite a few times over the past year or so, mainly because there are few good food options available in Sumter at a reasonable price. Yucatan offers a wide variety of Tex-Mex style dishes at a more than reasonable price, they have great prices on beer, and have great customer service. From the outside Yucatan is in the corner of a small shopping area and can easily be hidden from view from those who don't know the area. The inside is quite large, however, with plenty of seating options available in your choice of booth or table. The decor is Mexicanesque, and the atmosphere is almost always bustling with some discernible conversation audible from nearby patrons. The service is the best thing about Yucatan because not only are the wait staff friendly, but they are fast! I have never waited more than a few minutes when I needed something and the food always comes out of the kitchen in record time. Overwhelmingly, the best thing about Yucatan is the food. Yucatan serves some of the best Tex-Mex style food in the area, if not the State. The food is great, always served hot from the kitchen, and cheap! It caught me off guard how cheap the food was at Yucatan for the amount you receive and quality. For about $30 you and a friend can easily share a few beers and order plenty of food at Yucatan and leave stuffed. I personally reccomend the Molcajete and a Chicken Quesadilla. Overall, Yucatan is where I would take a friend to if in Sumter. Its reasonably priced, serves great quality Tex-Mex food, and the service is impecable for Sumter. 4 out of 5 stars.

Driving down I-95 we randomly picked this exit and drove into this parking lot. A quick check on Yelp showed it had decent reviews, so we went in. We were highly impressed! The lunch combos 1-5 were on special for $2.99 each - and the quality, serving size and freshness was exceptional for the value! Our dining bill was far cheaper than we could have gotten across the street at Taco Bell - and we had attentive friendly service. Heck, even the full price lunches were super affordable and we would have been happy at full price. Wish this place was local to us, we'd eat here all the time!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
