The service was slow, the meal was overall poor quality. The red sauce was bland and oily the vegetables were soggy and did not taste fresh at all. The "infused oil" for dipping tasted like oil with some herbs just recently placed in the bottle. Even the chicken ( I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be grilled or pan seared) was tasteless. The red sauce tasted like it was poured out of a can. I can't tell you how disappointed I was with the food. However, they asked if we wanted "fresh ground pepper" and I guess that meant putting regular- already ground black pepper in a grinder and make it look like it was freshly ground. They cut way to many corners to be a good Italian restaurant. Please Help, Gordon Ramsey!!!

Traditional Italian. A well written menu of freshly prepared authintic Italian dishes. Nice Atmosphere, friendly and knowledgable staff. Appitizer: Mozzarella Carozza, a stuffed fluffy pastry filled with Mozzarella cheese. Entree: Fettuccine Bianco which was a Fettuccine with Shrimp and Scallops covered with a Lobster sauce. Very good as well. My wife had the Combo platter which was Lasagna, Raviolli and Manacotti covered with a meat sauce. It too was very well prepared and a wonderful taste. Desert: Creme Brulee Cheescake and Tiramisu. Both were excellent. All in all it was an excellent meal. If in the Summerville area and want a wonderful Italian meal, I highly recommend this restaurant

Saturday night and we meet some friends here for dinner. There was 10 of us so I made reservations two days in advance. When we arrived we only waited a few minutes to be seated in a cramped room in the back of the restaurant. Even though the reservation was for 10, we were seated at a table set and sized for 8. They brought in a table that looked like it had been sitting in a back room somewhere for ages to correct the issue. We all got a good laugh at the statement on the menu that said they could fit parties up to 28! Where!? We were not starting on the right foot for dinner. All in all, the service was terrible and that's what bothered us the most!!!! We are a party of 10 and we had reservations no less, there was no reason we should of had to wait 30 minutes for someone to come take our drink orders. The tables around us came and went, but we still waited on everything forever. And when the food did arrive it was not that great honestly. I ordered the ravioli and the sauce was too watery. I have no interest in going back here and neither does the rest of our party.

Very good meal. Better than chain Italian. Owners were on site and very friendly. Will definetly return here.

The Red Pepper is not all it is cracked up to be, and the fact that most people who recommend the place have never experienced real Italian should always be considered. The food is hit or miss. The wait staff rates the same. The prices are fair. If you ever have the displeasure of meeting the owner and he gets mouthy, just stand up to him and he will go away. Need I say more?

My hubs and I tried this out on a Thursday night, brought in by a groupon. It was quite slow, only a couple of other diners in the restaurant. So we had great service, very fast removal of dishes and our drinks were always full. We had a mozzerella appetizer that was amazing - like a mozz stick but a rounded patty. Yum! We both ordered side salads to start, nothing special there. The bread they bring out is fantastic and they bring an olive oil dip that tastes great. The bread is the same bread they use for their pizzas and calzones so I'm sure those taste amazing! I ordered a fettucine blanco dish with scallops and shrimp in a lobster sauce. The scallops were tasty, the shrimp didn't thrill me. Too stuffed for dessert from the large portion sizes! A little pricier but very tasty and great service.

We went around 2PM on a Saturday, the place was totally empty haha. Mediocre service, we only got checked on once and he didn't refill our drinks. But that won't stop me from going back (only since husband always wants a refill but I'm good to go haha) The bread was delish, I had eggplant parm and i LOVED it. What Jeff said - "Better than chain Italian"- BY FAR. If you haven't checked this place out, I suggest you do ASAP.

yummie!! My husband and i had a late lunch there it was very quiet and homie inside. The bar area looked really nice. The food was really good and the portions were a good value for the price. It was to cold to sit outsid but it looked like that would be nice to do for next time!

Went with family after a viewing and it was a great meal! We were able to sit and enjoy the food and company without being rushed. Our server, Matt, was very knowledgeable about the restaurant and menu. The bruschetta app, the balsamic dressing, lasagna, tiramasu, and espresso were all fabulous! All portions were huge, enough for two meals.

My family tried this place out for my birthday dinner. The food was absolutely delicious! Service was wonderful. Very nice atmosphere sitting outside on the deck. The music playing wasn't too loud. A little piricier than we are used to, but worth the trip. Probably my only complaint would be that the iced tea was super super sweet.

A little slow getting our meals. Waiter was very knowledge of the menu. Ended up eating a chicken panini that was awesome. Would definitely recommend this restaurant and will return.

Nice atmosphere, good, knowledgeable staff. The Fettucini Bianco with the lobster cream sauce is excellent. Definitely a place we will visit again.

My husband and I have driven past this place countless times and always said "we should eat there sometime". Of course the one time we actually decide to eat there is when we are hosting a wonderful relative but with whom we were on a tight schedule for the day. This is only something I note because the excellent service standards of this restaurant also encourage a slow, relaxing dining experience. Not an "OMG we're late for an appointment because of poor time management on our part" hurried eating and ordering. Overall, though, the service was wonderful and we very much appreciate our server's patience with us. Also, the food was WONDERFUL especially the soups!

My girl friend and I strolled into The Red Pepper on a Wednesday afternoon for a ladies lunch. Upon entering the restaurant we were overwhelmed by amazing smells comin from the kitchen. We immediately knew we had picked the right spot to indulge that afternoon! We were greeted by our friendly host and waiter and he let us sit where we liked. We ordered the calamari for an app along with the chicken parm and lobster ravioli for our entrées. Everything came out perfectly. The food was so very well prepared & rich with flavor. Just what we needed. This place is totally underrated, I'll definitely repeat again and again! Next time Ill be ordering one of their special root beer floats! :D

This place has authentic Italian; if you're from the North East and know real Italian you'll appreciate a place like this down here. Anyone that didn't like the food here should probably stick to Olive Garden.

I really wanted to like Red Pepper. I figured something was up since I saw both a Groupon and Living Social deal for this place, but we still thought we would give it a try. The atmosphere: This was probably the only thing worthy of a star. We enjoyed the patio area, with both covered and uncovered seating. The inside had wonderful music and a great smell. The service: The place was not busy AT ALL and it still took forever for our server to bring things, fill up our water, etc. We spent almost two hours....probably could have been in and out in an hour. The food: I did not like anything I put in my mouth. The fried cheese was weird, I did not like the marinara, my salad came with the dressing on it (i asked for it on the side) and the dressing was super watery rather than creamy, the bread they bring was super oily and then they give you even more oil to dip it in, my Italian beef hoagie was horrible.....the only thing that got a slight compliment was my husband's meatball hoagie. Needless to say, we would not recommend this place,

The best Italian dishes on the menu. We experienced The Red Pepper during our visit to Charleston and fell in love with this place. A large selection on the menu and homemade gelato is a must try. We will visit this place again. Its marked as a favorite.

I tend to give an extra star to solid, independently owned restaurants that provide great service and food - and this place is GREAT. They don't even need the benefit of the extra star. Mom and I for dinner around 5 on a weeknight. Located in a converted cottage/house with a fantastic patio area. Ordered the house special fried mozzarella - yes its different - because it probably isn't pulled out of a frozen bag. It was tasty and fresh. I thought the marinara was delicious and most importantly - all of it was served hot. The dinner salad was fresh and cold - I like cold salads. Dressing is limited to house balsamic, but it was very tasty. Mom ordered the carbonara - loved it. I ordered the Armatricia (tomato based, ham/bacon, mushrooms(?) and pepper flakes - my standby of the famous Roman specialty. I have eaten the dish in Rome, Italy and this was just as good!! DELICIOUS! perfectly prepared with serious depths of flavor. So good and obviously not 'rushed'. Also, I would like to note that the pasta was cooked to perfection. I get the whole al dente thing, but that doesn't mean (and never did) raw pasta. Portions were plenty. Great job here. Bread was fresh - service was top notch. Mom ordered the tiramisu; I am guessing that the recipe is light on egg - which I actually thought tasted wonderful. According tot he menu, made by the owners lovely wife. Excellent meal, great place to take guests. Win win. Substantial menu, serve wine. Our entrees were $15-ish each. Appetizer, 2 dinners and dessert = $50.

Friendly and attentive staff. Good selection of foods. I have been looking for a good lobster ravioli and think I've found my spot! The prices are higher than chain restaurants, but worth it for the homie feel of the restaurant and really not as high as you'd expect to pay at local owned spot.

I've never had such a delicious Italian meal in my life. The staff is gracious, go MARY LOU, and the owners are making everything from passed down recipes. I will absolutely become a regular here. Everything is just simply amazing!!

The floor was flooded with water after an employee watered the plant with no saucer to catch the water. We were sitting at the end table on the left right when you walk in the place. There were large puddles by out table, even under out table. We were expecting at least the manager to come by and say something. The waiter simply through several towels on the floor to dry it up. Nothing but a sorry. The service was not very good as well. He wasn't very attentive. We ordered the large red pepper gourmet pizza $19 and a chicken pasta dish $17. The pizza was below average: the sauce was alittle spicy, crust was soggy on the bottom, not cooked evenly - half of it was more done then the other, onions were very thinly sliced and hard to chew- we ended taking them off. $19 was expensive for the quality of the pizza. We could have made it better at home. The pasta was better and had better flavoring. The olive oil dip for the bread tasted like just oil not herby like its supposed to be, not much sage. Being married to a culinary degree person and food expert, it's hard not to notice these small things especially food related. The restaurant itself had a weird unpleasant smell and the building itself was old. Could use a new facelift. Our table was surrounded by old photos and walls that didn't seem like they had been cleaned for a while if not years. Save your money and go to Olive Garden or somewhere downtown.

My wife and I stopped in Summerville for lunch on our way to Charleston to celebrate our anniversary. We didn't want to stop at any of the chains out by the freeway so we drove about 2 more minutes toward town and found this wonderful little Italian place. She had the eggplant parmigiana and I had soup and the Pomodoro Caprice Salad everything was wonderful and the staff was very attentive and made our afternoon very special. We ended with the Tiramisu which was very good. It is great to find a gem like this - we will be back - this will be our Italian go to in Charleston.

My husband and I stopped here tonight for dinner. The service was very good, the focaccia bread and dip delicious! My husband had a combination plate with flavorful sauce. Being half Italian we were very disappointed in the meatballs, they were over cooked and tasteless. Sausage very good, but do not order anything with meatballs. I had a Caesar salad which was very good and actually got anchovies. Our waiter Victor, was very attentive. I don't see a return visit in the future, will look further for a better Italian representation.

I came here to celebrate a good friends birthday and I have heard mixed reviews. Well I have to say, It was the best Italian food I've has in charleston since I moved here in 1997. It is by far and away better than those big box "Italian restaurants" that everyone seems to pack. The staff were on point and very helpful with their recommendations. I had their roasted red pepper, tomato and Gouda soup to start, and then their spicy seafood linguini with their homemade red sauce. It was delicious! Perfectly seasoned, the pasta was perfectly al dente, the sauce was sweet and not acidic, the shrimp and scallops were succulent and perfectly done. Parking is a little tight though. All in all, ignore the nay-sayers and head over to The Red Pepper. You will not be disappointed.

This little jewel of a restaurant is a gem located in Summerville...parking is easy and the food prepared from scratch by Chef Jim is as excellent as you'll find on an Italian menu. Jim has a natural family tradition and love for Italian cuisine. He also trained at the Culinary Institute of NYC. I love the snippets of history behind each dish. Specials change weekly. He was in the kitchen before dawn putting the finishing touches on their Easter Menu...his lamb creation was incredible!!! The wait staff is friendly and efficient and the owners, Fred and Donna White on always on site. Fred has years of experience with restaurants he has owned all over the country and grew up in this family business. Fred knows his wines and pairings. Fred also is the mixologist and I'd put his martini's up against any I've ever had in my lifetime. Donna makes incredible deserts. While not the typical "five star" location, the food is five star all the way. See you there. Ciao. Lynne and Tony Hardwick

used to love the Marina Sauce - new chef fooled around with recipe. Waiter failed to mention that veggies instead of pasta was $1 per veg.; asked for a little gravy - charged $ 1.50 - have never had to pay for a liitle extra gravy - that hurt ! Not that the $ is an issue, but pls have the waiter advise that a change off the menu will cost you. Plenty of great restaurants in Summerville - don't nickle and dime your customers.

Very disappointed... The "breadsticks" were nothing more than pizza crust sliced into sticks. Environment was very noisy and we couldn't hear our server above the noise. Ordered the Salmone con Senape e Porcini. A small piece of salmon on way too much over cooked spaghetti - not linguine as the menu states. The salmon tasted like it was frozen, definitely not fresh and it, too, was way over-cooked and dry. When I returned my meal, there was no apology from the server, but instead he says, "We prepare the salmon well done". Why would you cook salmon well done and why would you make an excuse to your customer? I tasted my friend's lasagne and it was marginally better than frozen lasagne. The server tells us that neither of the cheesecakes are made locally (one from NY the other from PA), nor are the cannoli shells. With all of the great pastry chefs in Charleston, why would you get your desserts from out of the area? We ordered the New York Monster Cheesecake. Delicious, but I can't give them credit for it since it's not made in house or even locally. It certainly was not "monster" by any stretch of the imagination and definitely not enough for two as the menu states. This was my first visit and as much as I really wanted to like this quaint, local restaurant with the charming outdoor patio, it will be definitely be my last visit. Far from authentic, fresh Italian food and there are few things worse than a server who makes excuses for poorly prepared food.

I went here with a group of 15 a few days before Christmas. First off, the service was great, which is why they get 2 stars. The food, on the other hand, was abysmal. I ordered a personal pizza, which was not even on par with Digiorno. It was like a loaf of bread with ketchup and american cheese. Not to mention the sausage topping, which was obviously heavily processed and recently defrosted. My brother had a steak, asked for it medium rear, and received a hockey puck. The knife they gave him was hardly up to the the task.

This place is crap...lousy service and their authentic Italian food is obviously not fresh made and straight off of a food truck or something. Too pricey for the terrible quality. The owner is a total d**k to boot!

  • Gil S.

I have eaten here too many times to count over the last several years. Going to the Red Pepper is a crap shoot. I have had 5 star meals there and I have also simply horrible meals there. There is no rhyme or reason to what you are going to get. To some extent this was forgivable when they had affordable prices. Now it is far too expensive to take the chance that I will have to leave here to find something edible for dinner.

This place has gone to Italian hell.... The management, oh wait is there management? We waited an hour and a half outside... No apologies, food orders wrong. Food was shitty. This business is NOT going to make it. They have NO concept of customer service. Stay Away! I understand now why there is no current comments on this Facebook. This restaurant is not the same!!! $101 for shitty food, bad service and lame excuses.

Today I had lunch at the Red Pepper. I had the lasagna with meat sauce. While the portion size was quite adequate, I must take issue with a few things. My meal was luke warm at best and that is simply unacceptable when paying $15 for a meal. The prices here are way out of whack and I would say that the prices are 40% higher than they should be. The waiter was very professional and polite which is always a good thing. I should mention that I have eaten in over half the states in the country in addition to Canada, England and the Bahamas. While I may not be a world traveller I do believe that my opinion has merit. Also, for the record, I do not eat at McDonalds, Burger King or ANY fast food joints so please consider the source of my review when deciding for yourself if you would choose to dine here. The decor outside is nice and has a nice ambience to it. The only way that I would return here is if they lowered the prices to $10 a meal or someone else was paying the bill.

Tradtional Italian. A nice and thorough menu of freshly prepared authentic itailian dishes. Nice atmoshere, friendly and knowledgable staff. The Food: Appetizer was a mozzarella within a flakey dough served with a tasty maranara sauce. Different and very good. Salad was traditional house with very fresh ingredients. Entree was a fettuccine with scallops and shrimp in a lobster sauce. Very good. Overall a terrific meal. I will be returning.

Service was sub par and so was the food. After taking one bite of a seafood dish I decided it was inedible. I let the server know and was not approached by anyone to ask if I needed anything else and was then charged fully for the item. I was not looking for anything special maybe just acknowledgment that their was an issue and a brief apology. Will not be returning.

I had both lunch and dinner here. The prices are fairly reasonable and the food is good. The pizzas are quite good, but I normally order the chicken parm. I've always found the service to be consistent and acceptable. The outdoor patio is pretty nice.

Nothing like listening to the male and female owner/managers argueing about a bottle of missing wine while you are eating. Our waiter was the only professional one there! Food is excellent but the drama was unnecessary!

Went here for lunch on valentines, asked about risotto and after the waiter went to the back to check he assured me that risotto was on the way... When its time for my entree to come out I discover that I've been lied to.... No risotto not enough for one entree even. Thanks red pepper. I will never be back ever.

Maybe it was a bad night for both the cooks and the servers - but 2 strikes and we were out! We had super slow service (which was puzzling because the place was empty) and the food was kind of cold, very basic, and not impressive. I love to support local restaurants but couldn't find anything to rave about here.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
