When we moved into Cane Bay in the spring of 2014 we heard a lot of negative things about this restaurant. Around the time that we moved in they got their liquor license. I don't know what changed, but every time we go it gets better. The first time was OK, now it's actually Good. We always get promptly sat, we always have plenty of chips and salsa and we always get good service. Even the guacamole has gotten better. There is nothing that I don't like about the place! It's a great place to go on a week night when you're not in the mood to cook or a Friday when you want a margarita. Oh! I almost forgot. The Sunday brunch is dope. I highly recommend that if you're new to the Rio.

We have gone back to this restaurant a few times now and I have to update this review to say that lunch service (when it's slower) you get better food. When we go at night it is busier (restaurant is not packed, however) and the quality of food is not as good. The free chips and "salsa" that we were served last night....the "salsa" was nothing more than a can of pureed tomatoes with cilantro added in. The chimichanga was bland. I think we're done with this new restaurant. Maybe give them some time to settle in and get in their "groove" before trying it again. We'll drive further and go to La Hacienda instead.

We eat here often and have found it to be one of the best mexi places around the Summerville area. Our fav! Make sure you try the pollo choriza.

We first tried going to Rio Chico after they first opened and acquired their liquor license. The place was pure chaos. They didn't have enough servers, had run out of chips and the wait to be seated was close to an hour because the kitchen was backed up with orders. And this was when the restaurant was only half filled due to the lack of servers. My understanding is that the owners of this restaurant own another restaurant in Mount Pleasant. If that's the case, you'd think they would know how to run a restaurant and be better prepared. We left and decided to try again at another time. We returned a few weeks later and were able to get seated. Overall, the food was average at best. The food was extremely bland with what seemed to be no spices whatsoever. The drinks were some of the weakest we've ever had (makes me wonder if they put ANY tequila in their margaritas!), and had to order extra shots just to make it taste like a real margarita. Our server comped us on the shots (he probably heard that same comment before). We had high hopes for Rio Chico as it is located close to home, but we won't be visiting again. We have passed by there several times since we dined there and see that the place is emptier and emptier each time we pass by. I guess we aren't tne only ones that have tried it and not giving it a second (or third) try.

My first must in a Mexican restaurant is the chips and salsa: The chips and salsa came immediately and are complimentary like it should be! Also they offered their regular salsa or mild. I went with regular. It's great and has a nice lil kick to it! Food is great, I have enjoyed the Sunday brunch in the past. Also I have had good margaritas here! I always order them on the rocks, so I cannot compare their frozen margaritas with the other review that gave bad margarita review. But I enjoy the margaritas in the rocks here!

We have always had a good meal here until today. We ordered medium frozen margaritas. They were like ice water. No flavor, no alcohol. We sent them back and they remade them saying their machine was down. Whoever made them apparently did not know the recipe. They came back thicker but no flavor and no alcohol. they were like slushy icewater. Still charged us $6 each for them. Never asked if the 2nd ones were ok. Waitress would not make eye contact and it was obvious we were out $12. Food was okay but not as good as usual.

They put the same cheese sauce on everything...so it all tastes the same. Great location and drink prices, but not very authentic Mexican food.

Been here several times now, sometimes when a place is so new you have to wait until they settle in to get a good idea of how it's gonna play out. The first couple of times we were here the good was great, but now they have just become like the other Mexican places in town. So if you are close and want Mexican stop here. Otherwise if you are looking for something different head downtown Charleston to Santis!!!

As good of Mexican food as you will get for SC since there really is nothing authentic here. I recommend the carne asana tacos. Pricey but to be expected for the location. Service is a little slow but friendly. The margaritas were pretty decent when they first opened but not anymore and they won't make them fresh anymore either so it's pretty much pre-mix and OJ, but that seems to be how they make them around here - coming from Texas that's just not a margarita!! We go for the convenience occasionally, but don't prefer it.

Nice clean place, quality authentic Mexican food with huge portions. The staff are friendly, the beer is cold and the atmosphere is inviting. Not sure why most people refuse to give a newer place a second chance. Every restaurant has its growing pains. They've figured it out here and the most important things are clean, fresh food, friendly staff and a warming environment. Give it a chance folks. By the way....I need to highly recommend the Burrito Enmolado. It's absolutely addictive and bursting with flavor, the only problem is that you can't eat it all.....hahaha. Well, at least not in one sitting!

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but my experience with Rio Chico was completely opposite to those posted. We were promptly greeted and seated, our order was taken quickly and served quickly as well. I had a lunch Rio Chico steak burrito that was very tasty- my bride enjoyed a chimichanga deluxe. The sopapillas left a bit to be desired, though, but were rather tasty- just not fluffy like we are used to. Overall, a great alternative to the other chain in town and we'll be back.

Bad service, went in at 9:30 pm only 3 other couples in the place and they still messed up our food. One plus, they didn't charge us for the food they messed up on and still brought it to us.

I ate lunch here with a friend- we were seated and served quickly. Food was good, on par with other Mexican restaurants in the area, but THIS restaurant is much cleaner. Haven't had dinner yet at Rio Chico, but it's definitely on my list to visit again!

I have eaten there twice, once at dinner and once at lunch. Both times I was very disappointed. I had the steak burrito the first time and was brought a chicken burrito. They did replace it without a problem. However, the beef was overcooked and dry. Had lunch there today and ordered the Rio Chico burrito which was supposed to have steak fajita meat with beans and rice which led me to believe that it would be a beef burrito with rice and beans on the side. However, the beans and rice were mixed with the beef inside the burrito. It was pure mush. Way too many beans and rice. Should have said it was a black bean burrito with a hint of beef. I ate about one-fourth of it. Ordered a frozen margarita and the machine had not been filled so server used crushed ice. Had several ice chunks in it. The server was very apologetic. She even had the manager take off the burrito since I told her it was not edible when she asked if I wanted a take-away box. So, to sum it up - the service is good, the food is not. I will drive into Summerville to go to Margarita's.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
