Not a bad place to pop in and have a bite to eat and a black and tan

Fish &Chips, Shepherd's Pie, Corned Beef &Cabbage, everything is good here. Monday night is taco night. You have to check out there tacos as they are not the normal tacos. You have fish taco, buffalo chicken taco, Philly steak and cheese taco.... $2 each on Monday nights. These tacos cannot be ordered off the menu at all at other times. They are fantastic!

This pub is amazing.. The beers are awesome.. The food is delicious, the wait staff and bartenders are spot on.. Always attentive. I've been coming in here since they opened, and I'm pretty sure I've paid their light bill once or twice.. There is no other place in charleston that I will come to a couple of times a week.. Get a Guinness and the burger or the fish and chips and enjoy the authentic Irish atmosphere, music and the camaraderie of your fellow Irishman.

Great atmosphere, great beer selection, great service, and the prices are reasonable. I've been here twice for the Monday night taco special, they are off the hook and at only two bucks each they are an awesome deal. Cheers!

I think I really want to give them a 2.5 -- We arrived at 6:45pm. Waited around what we thought was a hostess station. 10 mins. later someone got our name and added us to a list. Was told no wait time but others after us were told 20-25 mins. There is no where really to wait that you are not in the way. Having a 4 month with us, it would have been nice to be able to sit while we are waiting. The "wait area" is near the kitchen so wait staff is always rushing by you either way. Dining area is arranged weird --- lot of wasted space. There was a table empty the entire time we were there waiting. After 30 mins. of waiting, we were escorted to that empty table? Service was ok --- nothing too memorable. We all ordered fish and chips. Came out quick and was reallly hot. The fish was pretty good ... fries ok. Big group sitting literally 3 feet from us at another table. They sat there the entire time drinking water being way too loud, could not talk to my Dad sitting across from me. I think I may give them one more shot since the food was decent but I won't be rushing back there.

This place is excellent. Food is great and service is excellent. Sometimes they even have live music. The difference between this pub and the many I've been to in Ireland and England (I lived in the UK for 3 years) is that (1) Madra Rua is cleaner, (2) the food is better at Madra Rua, and (3) Madra Rua is friendlier. This place has character, charm and class. The lady above who gave it a suspect review brought a 4 month old to a pub? Come on, woman! Sounds like you need a visit from DSS. And baldy, who doesn't like the black specks on his fish... I bet you had a "black speckled attitude" and therefore were maybe denied onion rings because you were giving bad attitude vibes. Madra Rua is worth the visit if you like good beer an food and a cozy atmosphere that feels like a pub should feel.

My colleague and I were driving through the area on a trip to South Carolina and came across this restaurant and decided to stop in. What a gem! The food was delicious and the staff warm and welcoming. I can't wait to come back to this area and try another meal there! Oh, the drinks were great! Guinness poured just right! :-)

Beautiful authentic interior, woodwork and bars. Friendly and fast service. Great food for lunch and brunch. Big Irish beer selection. Always a great time!

Good food and decent atmosphere. Great selection of beer. Friendly staff. The Guinness is way too cold and they need to ban smoking outright. Even on the non-smoking side you end up smelling like a chimney. Otherwise, this a great place to hang out.

Love this place! I always get the prime rib sandwich, it's perfectly cooked and have never been disappointed. My friend ordered the shepherds pie and wish it had more flavor. Good drinks and atmosphere!!

Love Madra. Love it. Was so happy when they opened this location in Sville, just wish it was more downtown Sville than over the over pass Sville. Oh well. The inside is beautiful. All old dark woods, just beautifully done. two bars - as it used to be smoking on one side and not on the other, now the whole place is no smoking. which is nice. Can sit at either of the two bar areas or they have seating. I like the way the seating is open but it allows a little privacy at the same time. Tvs to watch the games. Beautiful Irish pub like feel. The shepards pie is amazing. I literally crave it every few weeks. it is that good. The fish n chips are also really good, Prime rib dinner is also excellent. I dont think that there is anything that I have tried there that I thought was bad. Its all really good. They have a good beer selection, although most of the drafts are Irish imports. But they have a good selection of bottles to choose from as well. I love the different off the wall drinks that they make there as well, like the 'Man Mosa" - few of those will catch up with you quickly, but try at least one! The servers are awesome! Always friendly and outgoing, suggesting drinks or dishes that will go well together, attentive and just make the experience really great. I love to come here for their Sunday Brunch. The Bloody Marys are fabulous, I have tried just about everything on their brunch menu - ITS ALL DELICIOUS!!!

Hamburgers are an easy item to order. But when you order one at Madra, you order a bit of heaven. The hamburger is a half pound of hand patted prime meat. Thick & cooked to order. It comes with a fresh leaf of lettuce, tomato, & onion. Take your pick of 3 different cheeses, sauteed mushrooms or onions. Its one ot the best burgers in town.

We've been dying to try this Irish Pub in Summerville. We pass it on the way to friends houses often and couldn't find the time, but alas, we finally made it! We always love to try the fish and chips at Irish Pubs, it can really tell us if they're the real deal or not. My husband ordered the fish and chips and I went with the Shepherd's Pie. Both were fantastic although I will say that the fish portion of the dish was rather small compared to other pubs we've been to, typically we'd receive two pieces of fish that size or one large filet. It was battered nicely and fried to perfection. Hand cut fries that accompanied it were fantastic as well. There is an option to have this served on a hoagie too. My Shepherd's Pie was to die for. The filling alone was amazing and needed no addition of salt or pepper, seasoned just right. The mashed potatoes on the top were creamy and cooked just right. It is served with Irish Soda bread, and since I'm a carb freak, I of course loved it. I got halfway through the dish and hit a brick wall. I was so full. Luckily the kids were with us, so they finished off the rest with no problems. Service was great, our waitress was very friendly and accommodating. We'll definitely be back.

I have been here twice, and I can absolutely say I love this place. I like the dark wood, the little nooks and crannies you can eat in if you feel like a little more privacy, the friendly waitstaff, and the quality food. Oh, the food. So good. So far my fiancé and I have ordered: -Cheese fries-- obviously a good appetizer to have with a cold beer. -Guinness-- somehow the Guinness here tastes better here than other places. I know there is probably no real difference, but I swear, it really does. -Beer and cheese soup-- rich and creamy. Delicous. Kind of wish this had some meat like bacon in it, but it was still good and perfect for dipping fries in. -Shepherd's pie-- very creamy, but maybe a little too creamy. The portion was huge, and by the end, I think it became a little too rich for me. -Fish and chips-- the fish came out a lot thicker than I thought it would be, but it was a solidly yummy entrée. -Gorgonzola mac 'n cheese-- this was part of a steak special dinner, but we asked for a side of it with our fish and chips. It was amazing and needs to be added to the permanent menu. I definitely see us returning for lunch/dinner food and to try brunch.

Love the atmosphere! Great food!! Would love if they expanded there menu but what they offer is great!

The food is pretty good and the drink/beer menu is even better. If I'm in there after work having a beer, I would rather watch something besides soccer. That's not an option as soccer seems to be the theme. I usually find another place around the area if I'm just going in for a beer.

Great atmosphere and great food! Brunch is awesome!! This is really a unique place and from what I've been told by friends from Europe it is authentic to bars in Ireland, the set up and food as well. Summerville is lucky to have this restaurant, the location was a bit odd. Not sure why the owner didn't go to a more central location or downtown summerville. Either way you won't be disappointed!!

Whenever I am around Moncks Corner SC and it's central attraction the Santee Power HQ I make it a point to eat here. In additional to the food ,music and ambiance I absolutely love how easy it is to park your rental car there. If you want Shepards Pie it is excellent and it had a really traditional Irish pub feel. They have a draft beer selection that's a memory of a slip jig and made for ex-pats, so that could be kind of a setback, but the reels and hornpipes more than make up for it. The friendly bartenders make sure that the tunes do not have too many notes ( Mozart was once chastised for this) , if you know what I mean. They keep the music in D mostly and keep it flowing and make sure your stay in key. it's all traditional Irish folk music and punk rock, love it. This place could be a potential IQ ( Irish Quizzo) run in the South by the Wilkins organization, but at this point is not needed. The craic, as they say in Lansdale is fantastic.

Delicious every single time. The Sunday brunch is my favorite I always get the Irish eggs Benedict (when they have it) and the $3 bloody Mary's are so good. Only downside is they tend to run out of house favorites. Also highly recommend the steak sandwich for dinner.

I had the sheperds pie it was pretty good. It was served with brown bread. I ordered ginger ale with wiskey which was good but I was expecting it to be served with lime like they did when I visited Ireland. My significant other had the fisherman's pie which was phenomenal. I would definitely recommend that dish.

Well I have to admit this was my first visit to an Irish pub for a meal ! Me and my son with a few friends went and had a great time ! I had the shepherds pie with soda bread and a drink it was really good. I heard the fish and chips was worth a try so next time I'll probably do that next ! We'll this was short and sweet one Cheers everybody !

I revisited this restaurant when I found out that the indoors smoking section had been removed. The ambiance and decor is interesting. The food was much better than my first visit and so was the service.

Who would have known there is such a cool Irish pub in Summerville, SC??!! I was down in that part of the state for a funeral service... not a fun thing to attend. So after all the depressive events were over, my friend and I just wanted a drink. I wasn't hopeful with finding a good beer joint. But thanks to Yelp, I came across Madra Rua, and now we're on a mission. It's further away from the highway than all the other options... I almost questioned if this was a bad idea until I saw the building and the sign. It looked legit Irish. Parking was tight in the gravel lot. We sort of squeezed ourselves into a makeshift spot. Inside looked very appealing. We sat at the bar. Bartender Eric was excellent with service and amazing at remembering our names. It's a chill spot. I can see that they have soccer flags around, so I'm assuming they show soccer matches here. I had a cup of their bisque. It was ok. I didn't see any actual seafood. And my beer was cold. I saw that they offer brunch. I think it's definitely a good spot to revisit if I come back down this way again.

My husband and I have been here several times. We have always had amazing service, and great food! My husband loves the shepherd pie, and I am partial to the fish and chips or the burger. Lots of beer on tap and a great Irish pub feel.

  • Ryan C.

The food here is delicious, (I recommend the shepherd's pie,) but the reason I keep coming back is the friendly staff and the excellent beer. It is a pub atmosphere so expect the interior to be dimly lit. Great casual place to hang out with friends and grab a pint!

Still great food and place overall.... tiring they cant actually stock up on the meat loaf special on Fridays. I get off work at 7 get there at 8 and 2 hours into dinner and they are already out.... please learn from this. It is an ongoing situation that is losing you money....

I thought I wrote this review weeks ago! This is a great pub! Friendliest staff and I have to say, Ryan (the bartender) is the best bartender I've come across in a long time, maybe ever! He's extremely attentive to his customers, upbeat and super friendly. I can't comment on the food because there is not many vegetarian- friendly dishes. Definitely worth coming to!

Great atmosphere, fish and chips were ok. Fish wasn't crispy and the chips were overcooked. Appears they don't change their oil too often from the black specs in the batter. Tried to order onion rings at lunch as an appetizer, they were denied. They don't serve appetizers until after 4pm. Wow, the customer wants to give you money and you say no. You can fry fish and chips but not onions. Strange. *Updated: I've been back a few more times for dinner, onion rings are great, they also have a fantastic burger.

My husband and I went to Madra Rua Irish Pub for a spontaneous date night. Luckily, the kitchen is open until 1:00 a.m. for appetizers, their fish n chips, and burgers. My husband ordered the burger with bacon and cheese, and I had the fish 'n chips. The special sauce served with the burger was so good, we could have eaten it with a spoon!! It's a special blend that includes cream cheese and horseradish with the ret a secret! I even put some on my fish, even though the fish didn't need it. My fish was a nice portion of Atlantic Cod fish and was fried perfectly with the right amount of seasonings. The "chips" were perfect as could be and simple. Fresh sliced potatoes with skins on. My husband's burger was fantastic, too. Cooked just as requested adn more than enough for him!! I even sampled a few bites and loved it!! Jason was working the bar and created a wonderful "fruity" drink at my request and my husband had one of their many beers available on tap. Jason was very hospitable and I felt like we had walked into a pub in Ireland somewhere. Thanks for the great date night!! We will be back with the whole family!!

This is a nice little jewel in Summerville. They have a really nice beer selection and a chill atmosphere. There are at least eight beers on draft, but I've only seen the non-smoking side. On that note, they are now smoke free, so I'll have to update that number after my next visit. The food is just ok. I'm not a fan of anything I have tried there, but after drinking a few beers, the French fries are quite nice. Also, it's nice having a bar that plays soccer matches over anything else. Can't say I dig Liverpool, but it's nice having a support bar around.

  • Brandon T.

Shepards Pie was excellent and it had a really traditional Irish pub feel. They have a draft beer selection that's limited to mostly Irish imports, so that could be kind of a setback, but the service more than makes up for it. Very over the top friendly bartenders that keep the conversation flowing and make sure your drink never runs dry. Another thing that really put the place over the top for me was the music, it's all traditional Irish folk music and punk rock, love it.

Very nice and friendly staff! We had the fish n chips and Shepard pie, all great!! Had my first Sam Adams.

I'm a traditional, simple chick. They're grilled chicken house salad is good, but I just love they're chicken fingers and fries. The staff is all great and the atmosphere is casual and homey. No night is a bad night at Madra and you'll always feel right at home. Go and see for yourself and try whatever sparks your fancy, all the food is good.

I really like this place. I wasn't that impressed with the food. It was good but dont great. I had the fish and chips. The chips weren't very good but the fish was good. The fried cheese balls are definitely awesome. The bar service was slow when I went...really slow and they weren't that busy. I think everyone else went out of their way to make up for it because the waitress and someone who may have been the manager were very attentive. So why 4 stars? The beer, atmosphere, and soccer. Great beer selection! I love the feel of this place. The dark wood and little nooks they have give Madra Rua a feel you don't find at other places. Madra Rua isn't a place I'll go to for the food. I plan to go back and have some beer.

He said: I liked both of the pies we tried a lot. I ordered the fish and chips which were excellent. There was a sign saying they were going smoke free after St. Patrick's day. The staff was friendly and the restrooms were clean. Good Irish eats. She said: Yum! I have to say, my favorite items of the meal were the Shepherd's Pie and the Irish soda bread. Cool place...great atmosphere. I would go back!

Love the atmosphere! You have to try the Crabbie's. The food is good to excellent, and they have an outstanding drink selection. Too bad they don't have Murphy's anymore (distributer issue?). I'd highly recommend the Madra and visit often myself!

Came here for lunch yesterday. Great atmosphere. Food is excellent and served promptly. I had a corn beef Reuben which was one of the lunch specials and it was awesome. Everyone else lived their food. Server was great and friendly. Total experience A+

This is one of our favorite places to eat! Their Beer & Cheese soup is absolutely delicious and their Fish & Chips are the best! My husband and I used to each get a cup of the Beer & Cheese soup then each get an order of Fish & Chips...the portions are generous though and so now we've changed up our order a bit. Now we usually each get a bowl of the Beer & Cheese soup then share a Fish and Chips - they always bring us an extra plate and have no issue with us sharing :-) Definitely recommend trying this place if you haven't already!

  • Marty M.

Excellent experience, the atmosphere was right on and gave me a European vibe akin to my experiences in Shannon, Republic of Ireland. Beer selection was diverse and promptly served at the appropriate temperature; service was amazing (thank you Kayla)! I had the fish and chips which were perfectly cooked, light and airy breading covering a huge piece of delicious Atlantic cod (Soda bread was phenomenal as well)! Rugby match on the television and Irish folk music in the background. Very reasonably priced, can't wait to visit again!
