3.5 stars considering that it the same variety of mexican resturant you can find all over the US. However El jalapeño does the little things well. Hot food, good service, and fast. And what is not to love about a Margarona?

I like the look and cleanliness of the place...just not my favorite Mexican place, by far. The food was ok...I tried the Arroz con Pollo (which I try at least once at every place I go to to compare) and this was easily my least favorite. Everything was cooked alright, but the chicken was as bland as it gets. Also, no tortilla shells (which some places provide with that entree). The chips, rice, and what veggies I did get were all fine-nothing to brag about. The service wasn't bad-they were very busy on a Friday night, and we for the most part didn't have trouble getting the waiter's attention for refills or extra chips. I do like the atmosphere and inside of the building though. It's a relatively new "shopping center", so it all looks new and pretty well-kept on the inside. I didn't try any drinks, so nothing there, but if you are looking for a clean, Mexican place and are in this area, it's not bad.

Coming from Arizona I was skeptical in trying Mexican food here. Decent menu that offers a lot of seafood choices (I don't eat meat). Their use of vegetables in some dishes is atypical of many Mexican restaurants and a pleasant healthy surprise. Food is higher quality in the entrees I have tried. I am a guacamole fan and their guacamole is subpar. They give very little guacamole with any dish that includes it, no more than a tablespoon or so. If you order an extra guacamole, it is the same minuscule amount. Salsa is fresh and decent. Ordered the bean dip and it's mostly a cheesy concoction than beans. Their idea of bean dip is different than the southwest. Very clean inside, staff is very nice and always smiling. If they improve their guacamole it may deserve another star.

This place had one chance with me. Food poisoning never made me want to go back. I didn't even eat meat. Don't risk your health!

We love this place! Service is great, they never let your salsa and chips get low! The prices are fabulous and the portions are pretty big. Just a warning, their "big" margarita is more of a fishbowl! My favorite dish is the verde fajitas and my husband likes their burritos. You can't go wrong.

Stay away... Far far away from this place. Service is the worst I've seen. The food was below par. I do not recommend this place to anyone with small children, the waiters would not stop setting food and silverware and drinks in front of our one year old who could have easily burnt or drenched himself.

El Jalepeno reaffirmed my hatred of mexican food. No seasonings, lardy refried beans, browining guacamole, rubbery textured tortillas, and broccoli STEMS in my veggie fajitas. This experience is always what I think when I think of mexican. Mexican menus are always the same americanized redundant crap and though some restaurants are fresh, and I know it's not 'real' mexican, well even good mexican food is really not that good. So I knew I was in for something mediocre - disappointing.

We go here once every few weeks it's not the best Mexican food I've ever had or the worst. It's like two min from my house though. The service is pretty decent and you get your food fast. We take our 4 month old twins and they are always very helpful. The prices are pretty good :)

The food isn't bad, but not worth the clueless waiters. Salsa is bland, basically tomato sauce. I'm not one to complain but tonight sent me over the top!

My wife ordered the shrimp quesadilla and when it arrived there was only cheese in it. The waiter took it back to get the shrimp quesadilla and when it arrived it only had 3 shrimps in it. Certainly not a good value. I ordered the scallop quesadilla and was happy with both quantity and taste. There is another Mexican restaurant in Summerville where the food quality is much superior at reasonable prices. This outing to El Jalapeño taught me to stay with what you know.

Best Mexican restaurant in the charleston area. Reasonable prices and good sized, flavorful portions.

We used to like El Jalepeno. Stress the "used to." The food is good and the margaritas are good BUT the last two times we have eaten there the service was atrocious. The second to last time we waited 45 minutes TO ORDER and another 45+ minutes before our food came. The last time we ate there it took 35 minutes for our food to come out, then all but one entree arrived. The last entree took over twenty minutes to come out! Everyone else at the table was FINISHED eating. When I asked for that meal to be taken off our bill the manager asked if the meal had been eaten. When I said yes, because my children were STARVING, he said he wouldn't take it off. I told him we wouldn't be coming back if this was their customer service policy. He then offered to take $5.00 off - I said no thanks. We'd pay the full amount but would NEVER come back. So if you want slow service and bad customer service, eat at El Jalepeno.

This place is below mediocre. The food was total joke. The beef fajita was mostly chicken and had strange smell. My wife's quesadilla was soggy and completely tasteless. The server was polite and cordial. We left the food, paid and left. First and last time there.

My new favorite Mexican restaurant in Summerville. Food is good (the standard fare for this type of restaurant), and there is plenty of room and a good wait staff. The biggest bonus is the cleanliness, which is somewhat questionable at other restaurants of this type...

Yah, it's Summerville, SC. But the food is decent, the ambience is predictable, and the waiters - well, at least the last time we went the guy didn't have an attitude like this was the very last thing on earth he'd prefer to do. Which you sometimes get. It's also within walking distance, so this place works for me.

This is the best Mexican food in town! The quality is always great. Happy hour drink prices are very good. They actually use whole poblano peppers for their chili relleno, unlike most other places that just use chopped pieces of the pepper.

For a quick lunch this place is awesome. The guys I work with turned me on to this place and I've been going several times a month since. The ACP and Carnitas are awesome.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
