Had a rainy morning to relax and take it easy, so I figured I'd swing by this place for a better class of breakfast. I was rather impressed by their breakfast menu. They have a good variety of items, and they look pretty good. I ended up getting the cheese blintzes with strawberry compote. They certainly don't skimp on the portions, and it was really tasty! Unfortunately road construction makes it difficult to come and go from here. Hopefully it doesn't hurt their business too much, because I really want to come back to try some of the amazing looking pastries in their deli case. The tomato pie looks really good, it's deep dish and I'm definitely gonna have to give it a try.

The food is always so incredible here and I love the little pancake letters for my son. It gets full quick and there isn't any high chairs for the high tops, but worth the wait!

I drove by this place on my search for a Dunkin Donuts, where I was planning on getting an iced coffee. I ended up stopping here since I also wanted something to eat, and figured they could probably make a better coffee than DD. Inside is very eclectic and cozy, something you wouldn't really expect from the outside. The staff were all very helpful and kind, and answered the million questions I had about the different pastries & coffees. I ordered a decaf iced Americano & a (huge) slice of the raspberry lemon cake. The cake was AMAZING and so big that I had half of it leftover to take home. The coffee was just okay- I think it tasted fine until I put the cream they had sitting out into it, which I'm guessing just means it wasn't the freshest. All in all, I would go back here again for the amazing cake, and for the coffee too... just minus the cream.

I can always count on a good bagel here. I am also super excited to see they added new salads to their menu, the former options I found to be lacking but the update is great! There is quite a bagel variety (including sundries tomato, blueberry, etc), after noon on a weekend it becomes slim pickings! With breakfast, desserts, and lunch options, I got word that they will be doing a dinner menu soon! I am happy that the awful road construction design did not seem to make a bad impact. There is always a merry crowd when I go in. So don't worry about the weird road, just get here!

My husband and I came in here for the first time on Sunday and were really excited to try something new and closer to home for breakfast. Their pastries in the case looked great right off the bat and they had a great coffee selection off to the side so we were looking forward to trying their breakfast. My husband ordered an omelet which came with potatoes and he chose a bagel that he had bagged to go. I ordered the Belgium waffle with "fresh blueberries in season." I quote this because when I received my waffle it was topped with blueberries but more like the canned blueberry pie filling, and far too much of it as well. I was expecting fresh whole blueberries, not a pie filling. My husbands omelet was decent but he said he could tell that they pay more attention to their baked goods than they do their actual breakfast options. He said the omelet itself tasted of cartoned not fresh eggs and the filling left much to be desired. The potatoes also tasted to have been over steamed or sitting longer than they should've been, leaving them a bit too soft with no real texture. Something else that was quite off putting was the amount of crumbs left under the bagel and pastry case. We didn't notice until we had ordered and sat down. Crumbs like that are an open invitation to bugs and rodents. An easy fix with a quick sweep and mop job... Overall, breakfast wasn't terrible but could be much better. Especially for a small and local spot in the Summerville area. They have a lot of potential but they seem to be lacking some of those small details that would really make them standout.

By the time we arrived at the Charleston Bskery (around 3:00 PM) the front cases were pretty much sold out. I had hoped to pick up some prepared dinner entrees from the refrigerated cases that I had previously purchased and loved only to learn that they were no longer selling precooked, table ready entrees. I did leave with 1 lb. corned beef, 1/2 lb of whitefish salad and two handcrafted potato knishes; one original, the other with the addition of cheddar and bacon and sides of spicy mustard. As we were running late there was no time to even drool over the cheesecakes and NY styled desserts. I'd like to return for lox. eggs and onions tomorrow AM, and ... and ... but I know it won't happen ... it's 30 miles away

A go to Favorite! When my parents are in from Philadelphia my father can't wait to get a bite to eat from this place. He raves that they have the best coffee !!

I really love this place. The prices are good, the food is good, and it isn't a boring chain restaurant. I've had many different items on the menu (not soup or salad, though) and have never been let down. Their Tomato Pie is heavenly. Addicting. Delicious. All of their desserts are fantastic. For parties we usually order two of (almost) everything.

I've dined here several times and have never had a bad experience. The food is fresh and cooked to order. There baked goods are fresh. If you like cinnamon buns, try their "cinnamess" if you can catch one before they sell out. The road construction is a challenge to navigate, but it is well worth the trip. I wish they restaurant was a bit larger as it gets pretty crowded on the weekend.

Upping this one a star. Seriously good croissants and bagel sandwiches. The sausage is very filling and low on the grease factor. The coffee alone was enough to raise the star-they make great French Press coffee (either a flavored or the Costa Rican)!

good food, most of the staff nice. Order isn't always right but I don't complain since its always tasty. Hard to get to thanks to construction. hopefully the "as if we need another" wal-mart is complete soon. I wish they had smaller cups for coffee and the can sodas were 2.44 for one. Yes one can soda is $2.44 each. I'm not big or sugary liquids so I opted for the can until she told me the price and I thought she was telling me the time of day. Worth a visit.

We've tried this place twice. Getting your order correct is a challenge. Don't get the soup zero flavor just water and veggies. Salads are loaded with onion. Stick to the sandwiches. Very spendy for what you get.

  • Amanda W.

They have the BEST croissants around. We've been several times & everything has been tasty. It's a little pricey, but we've tried several sandwiches, which were all too big to finish, so you get good portions of food. We definitely like this place.

Been back a few more time since the last review and things are back to the amazing usual ways at the Charleston B&D. Learned to order the corned beef and hash extra crispy to get it the way we like it. Have also had a few of the pancakes here and they are HUGE! Tasty too! Still need to make it here for lunch some day. But the breakfasts are out of this world. Coffee selection is top notch too!

I was going to try this place but when I saw the food establishment permit graded a C and it was covered by a menu I decided not to. That's bad ethics to have you food grade permit to be a C and then cover it. That's bad business. That just shows that they truly deserved a D. I'm not aware of why they got a C. I know receiving a C in California (where I am originally from) that's really bad business and unsafe for people to eat. Beware of the possibility of getting sick after eating here. Having a C rating is like eating in a dirty bathroom.

I have been 3 times. The first time I ordered the pastrami sandwich. It was so fatty that I couldn't eat it. I then saw that for an extra $2.00 you can get it lean. Well, if they are picking out the lean to give to the people that pay the extra $2.00, does that leave normal pastrami and corned beef? No. So you can get lean for and extra $2.00 or you can get extra fatty that is left over for the menu price and that is a hefty $12.00 as it is. So I changed to the gyro for the second visit. It was just ok, but it isn't a Greek restaurant, so I forgave them. Then on the third visit, it was the first time that I hadn't ordered iced tea. I asked for water. Well they will not give you a cup of water. You have to buy iced tea, coffee, Fiji water, or other bottled beverages. So, the four of us ate our lunch without anything to drink, on principle. I guess we could have asked for a cup and sneaked into the bathroom and filled it up. But that is ridiculous. So I just feel like they are always sticking it to me. Forcing me to pay extra not to eat the fat they trimmed off the sandwich for the guy in front of me that paid the extra $2.00 for meat, not fat or forcing me to buy a beverage or go thirsty when dining in. So this was the last time that I will be having an overpriced, average lunch without anything to drink at Charleston Bakery & Delicatessen. I hope that management takes these comments into consideration and changes their focus to a more customer-oriented business approach. Or that they just go all in and put up the "Restrooms are for Customer Use Only!" sign on the front door. At least I know to turn around at the door when I see that first impression winner.

Close by my house so I could go more often...if I wanted to. The counter help was not very friendly...especially if you're not familiar with the menu and need a moment. The first time I went I got the lox bagel meal which consisted of thick slices of rubbery salmon (too much, I had to leave half in the box) and a hard bagel with a schmear of cream cheese, and a lot of lettuce and tomato on the side. That was "the meal". It was alright, but for the hefty price, I expected better. The coffee was ok, typical row of thermos canisters. The second time I went, I got a plain bagel with cream cheese...it was hard and dry, and I got a cup of coffee with grounds. The third time I went, I left without ordering after waiting in line for 20 minutes and listening to the staff yell at each other. We attempted a fourth time and we had our kids with us. Most of the bagels were gone and our kids decided they'd rather not eat there so we left. Not before I noticed how much the prices had gone up though....for an already pricey bagel that I haven't been happy with, I won't pay more. I've had "real" deli bagels before, and these are not it. Save your money and go somewhere where you'll get good food and good value.

It's nice to have a deli in the Charleston area that prepares their own pastrami, corned beef, tongue, lox, etc.. Definitely a nice change of pace from the typical chain delis. The pastrami was nicely seasoned, moist and tender on homemade rye bread. It was perfect with a good dose of brown mustard. The bakery case looked good, but I didn't get the chance to try anything. As far as traditional jewish deli sandwiches, this is as good as it gets in Charleston.

I've been here a couple time to try their dessert and loved it. Today we tried the sandwhichs and they were 100% awesome! Their pastrami, turkey, corned beef, rye bread, coleslaw, macaroni salad, russian dressing, pickles, strawberry cheesecake, tiramisu, and chocolate chip cheesecake are freaking awesome!!!! We will be back to keep trying other items off their awesome and very extensive menu. Customer service was good even though they were very busy and we got our to go order very quick!!! Check this place out.

A great place to grab lunch. Their sandwiches are great. I keep meaning to try a salad but it's hard to pass their sandwich menu (plus carbs make me happier). Their desserts are good too, take something home with you! Service is okay, the cashiers never look exactly happy to be there, but it may be because this place is usually packed. Be prepared to wait for your food, but don't let that scare you, it's really good!

This place is superb in nearly every way. The food is always fresh and delicious. I really love their lox and bagel! The coffee is divine. The service is excellent. Every time I go in there I'm greeted by the friendliest people and the smile is contagious. The cakes are amazing. I really just haven't had a bad experience here. If the food was cheaper, I'd be in here every day. But you are paying for quality ingredients and service

Went for breakfast. Extremely rude and overpriced. I went with two friends after working out on a Saturday morning. We bought breakfast and coffee. We ate our meal and 5-7 minutes after we finished eating a waitress asked us to leave. I was still drinking my coffee! She said that there's new customers that need a place to sit. Really!?!? I paid for this just like anyone else... Second, I try to be polite by pouring the rest of my coffee out before putting it in the trash. There's no where for a customer to do that so I go to the ice maker and see a hole to pour so I do... The same waitress comes back to me and continues her rude rant as she points to this tiny sign that says not to pour coffee there. I'm sorry I didn't see your sign that needed a magnifying glass to read. RUDE.

This is a wonderful little secret in Summerville. We absolutely love this place!! Its perfect place for breakfast, brunch or lunch. They have inside and outside seating. No waiter service, you go to the counter and order, they bring you your food. For breakfast you cant beat the omelets - they are delicious and lots of different combinations!!! So is the ham and cheese croissant. Smaller breakfast? Get one of the bagels or some grits with cheddar YUMM!!! I have not gotten a dish here that didn't fill me up and I still had enough left over for lunch!! Generous portions is an understatement. Lunch .... the matzo ball soup and a half turkey sandwich- YUMM!!! The brisket is also a great choice. as well as the deep dish quiche. I have to admit that we dont usually stray much from the same thing we always get, but there are a lot of other things on the menu to try..... Shrimp roll, Havana cubano (speaking of - try the cuban coffee - OMG delicious) .... BLT and Meatball Tramezzino. The desserts are HUGE. AND the best homemade ones around. No need to go anywhere else to cure the sweet craving. Everything from assorted cheesecake to chocolate to rum cake. Have yet to hear anyone who has tried them say anything bad about them. If you are in the area, definitely pop in for a try.

I've had good experiences, and not so good experiences here. My favorite thing on the menu, and the reason I continue to return, is their lox platter. It is amazing. I have yet to have a good dessert there, which has been so disappointing each time. Today I ordered two desserts. One was a raspberry cheesecake as a surprise for my fiancé. The bottom half was mushy and inedible, like a cake that has been spoiled by moisture spilled on it. The top part was tasty though. After finishing eating what was edible I said "I could have made a better cheesecake." And my fiancé said "That was cheesecake?!" The second dessert I had one bite and threw out. It was a cream puff pastry. The pastry was so hard and stale I could barely bite through it. Today I had their rueben sandwich. I would give it 4 stars. I will return for their lox platter which has always been a 5 star dish... But I think I have given up on their pastry side.

Best grits in town! They are so creamy it isn't even funny. I also love the ham and cheese croissant. I really can't recommend them enough for breakfast. Just got desert and it was out of this world. We had a mini turtle cheesecake that was so amazingly rich the two of us couldn't finish it.

The is the sort of thing that clean living will do for you. When you are driving around mid morning hoping desperately that you won't have to back track 5 miles to that Hardee's that you think you may have passed, you happen upon the Charleston Bakery and Deli. A wonderful respite in an otherwise restaurant desert near Middleton Plantation. We stopped in and had a wonder breakfast in a friendly and busy deli. A delight. I am rounding up one because this is the sort of place that I count on yelp to help me find when I am wondering around lost and hungry.

Had I seen the "B" rating hidden by a small tree I wouldn't have gone in. Both my wife and I ordered the #1 pastrami, it tasted good but my wife had to go to the bathroom right after eating and I spent the night getting up needing to use the bathroom. I guess it's rated a "B" for a reason, we will not be going back.

The Charleston Bakery & Delicatessen is a little hidden gem. The staff is super friendly, the restaurant itself is quite clean and the options are pretty great. I have eaten here for dinner and breakfast on numerous occasions. Each time was pretty okay and there are little things that I wasn't a fan of, but overall my experiences were great. The portions are decent, but the prices are a little steep. You order and pay at the counter, then sit down. They'll call your name and bring your food out to you. For dinner- coming from a Jewish family, I immediately ordered the matzo ball soup. I couldn't wait! When I received it, I was thoroughly disappointed. The matzo ball was quite hard and had not soaked up enough of the broth from the soup. I'm not sure if they put them in the soup as they are ordered or if they were newly made but I was not a fan. The pastrami sandwich my husband had and the roast beef sandwich I ordered were fantastic! For breakfast- I always order a bagel sandwich. Their bagels are delicious! They taste like I drove to NYC to get them. The items on the sandwich are delicious. The eggs are extra fluffy, the bacon super crispy. (I have not ordered the sausage one, yet) Their corned beef bagel sandwich is pretty impressive. It has a fantastic flavor. Their dessert case is pretty decent. Their cheesecake is good, but they put a cake like crust on it which just throws me off from the "cheesecake" feel. I prefer a graham cracker crust, but that is just my own preference. The flavor of each cheesecake is pretty great. (I've had about four different flavors) Their small fruit tarts, coconut cream pie, other various tarts are delicious. I have yet to try the rum cake, but it is next on my list!

Why did it take me so long to find this place? Now that I have, it's going to be a regular stop for me when I'm up in the Summerville area. Went in for lunch on a Saturday. The place was busy but we were still able to snag a table near the back. The display cases were filled with such magnificent looking desserts, pastries and quiche that it was hard to decide on what to eat. When tough decisions abound...get a couple of different things! We started with the potato and onion knish with a little of the mustard that they keep on each table. The knish was surprisingly light and the mustard was absolutely amazing. I wish there had been more knish just so I would have a reason not to eat mustard straight from the jar. Next up was the most ridiculous slice of tomato pie you have ever seen. Seriously, it was about 4 inches tall and roughly the size of my face. The "side salad" that came with it was actually a full salad that only looks like a side when placed next to a humongous slice of tomato pie. The pie was very good, though it didn't seem to be heated all the way through. It was a bit cold in the center, but still tasty. My boyfriend had order the Reuben sandwich which was piled high with tender corned beef. My friend had a lamb gyro which was also delicious. The downside about this place is that the servings are so huge you don't have room for any dessert when you're done. Next time I'm ordering some stuff to-go so I can taste more items. Croissant AND danish? Yes, please!

  • Erin H.

My dad and I went in for breakfast. He ordered an omelette, and I a breakfast bagel and two coffees. It ended up being like $25, which is outrageous! Anyway, I asked for a cup of water to go with my meal, and the girl said they only had bottled water. That's absolutely ridiculous to be that cheap, and they've lost our business as a result. The food and coffee is really good, but the long lines, mediocre service and the fact they wanted to charge two extra dollars for WATER made them lose regular customers.

Pretty good food. We bought breakfast (take out) when my in-laws were visiting one weekend. The place was packed. We mainly ordered breakfast sandwiches, but my mother in-law ordered their french toast. The food was all good. The funny thing is when we saw our receipt, it said $50 or more. The cashier added something on our check in the amount of $18 that we didn't order. We had to go back to get the refund. When we did, they were not nice about it, hence the 3 stars.

Place was nice, no real direction when you get there as to if you sit yourself but once we figured out you order at the counter we were good. Everyone was friendly and the food was very good.

I'm a New Jerseyan so I KNOW what a real bagel is. Today, I ordered an egg & cheese on a onion bagel. The price was far higher than average but, What the heck? The supposed "bagel" was very similar to the type that you could purchase in Walmart such as Lender's "Bagels" or Pepperage Farm "Bagels". In other words, the bagels offered for sale at Charleston Bakery and Deli are not real bagels. The only Bagel shop that sells anything close to a real New Jersey bagel in this area is Brueger's Bagels in Charleston. If not for the friendliness of the staff, this place would only rate one star due to the poor quality of the bagels and the very high prices.

Great little find in Summerville. They have an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, even Matzo Brei, and a pastry/cake variety that leaves the mind blown. My first time in, I had an omelet filled with spinach, mushrooms and tasty bacon (right consistency, thank you very much!) and my mom had the challah french toast. YUM. A decent coffee bar with a rum flavored coffee (Charleston Barbados) that really did make me think of a spiked coffee drink without being over flavored. I'm coming back to stuff my face with pastries and fruit tarts next time.

Convenient deli near my house. I've been here many times for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Pastrami and brisket sandwiches are really good, the meat is really fresh. The only thing i had there that was not good was a dessert and i can't remember exactly what it was, but it was sitting there for a while. Overall good place.

Went there for breakfast and the food was awesome! !!!! I had the everything bagel with sausage egg and cheese. Full of flavor and cooked perfectly. There was no complaints. The service was pretty awesome. We were greated with a smile and a thank you. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was for the lady who requested water bc the hot sauce she tried was too hot for her. Who tells some one no you cannot have tap water you can only buy the bottled water. I meann seriously their asking for a law suit. What if she had an allergic reaction and died or had some other issue. Just kinda a shame for such a wonderful place not to allow you to order a cup of water. :-(

Friends recommended this place and so glad that they did. Great food, friendly servers and locals-type crowd. Large portions for sure! Wide selection of beautiful pastries, quiche and other bakery items. Vanilla lattes were a bit sweet and pricey but I believe we've found our new favorite weekend brunch eatery.

Let me clarify that I am reviewing the lunch/ dinner options and not breakfast. (breakfast menu does look good). Took my family (two adults and two small kids) in for dinner. Food was simply okay. Probably would have rated 3 stars, but the price for the four of us was over $70.00 for sandwiches, hot dogs, and two pieces of cake. For $70,00 I simply expect a bit more WOW factor in the taste of the food. Nothing special on service. Typical counter service. If they are busy, you are going to wait.

I have enjoyed everything I've had at this deli, but I do find the prices a little high. I've been in by myself, with two friends, and with seven family members; so I have tasted lots of different menu items. Generally, the servings are too large to finish and one dessert is at least three servings. It might be a good marketing idea to offer a "Petit Menu" for those like me who would come more often if the prices were healthier for my budget and the serving sizes were healthier for my waistline. I see a review with a photo of a "C" rating from the health department. I have no idea when that could have been or how it could have happened. I have never seen anything other than an "A". I was at the CVS next door today, so I looked and there is an "A" on the door.

I'm so happy that I live close to this deli. Everything I have had here has been excellent. The sandwiches are incredible as are the baked goods. As a former pastry chef I do find their butter cream icing to be a bit heavy on the shortening and waxy, however. But it certainly didn't stop me from everything short of licking the plate. They have recently started breakfast and I can't wait to give it a try. Oh and their frozen coffees are made with ice cream! Hell Yes! Great place, give it a try.

  • Philip B.

Food has changed since they opened. Not as good as it started, they don't use pork butt (shoulder) for Cubans and pork sandwich anymore, they switched to pork loin which is to dry. The mustard is jars that anyone can use a dirty knife on, and the syrup jars are filled while the jars are still wet from washing which causes bacteria to form in them. Ack! The baked goods are good but the savory food has gone down hill.

Probably one of the bestest bakery's I have ever been to.. And I am an avid bakery visitor; I've tried many things on the menu and was consistently pleased with both service and quality of the food, this particular visit me and my buddy were there to retrieve an order for his wife, and I decided to try something different, the "Montana chili" caught my eye.. I asked what makes "Montana chili" different and the girl just said "it's just regular chili".. Well I would like to say that this was no ordinary chili my friends... This magical "Montana chili" was amazeballs!!!!! It was like the chili was cooked on the highest elevations of the Montañas Mountains to achieve its excellent robust flavor.. and the ingredients were gathered by the montaña tribes, so you know only the freshest ingredients were used.

Best pastrami since New York. But New York Jewish delis usually dont have great baked goods. The bagels are better than other bagels I have tried in the south, although they put too many poppy seeds on their poppy bagel. They bake their own rye bread. Yes the price is high for this area, but last time I had a really great pastrami on rye, I paid $15 for it. I wish I could afford to eat there more often. I would be broke with my stretchy pants worn out. Oh and their pastries and croissant, as good as Macaroons in Charleston. Hand over the credit card... you are in for a treat.

First time in this morning. Staff was super friendly. Food was really good. Finally a good breakfast place in Summerville that isn't a chain! Great desserts and coffee too. The fresh Jewish rye was fantastic!

I'm at this delicatessen all the time, but mostly because it's the closest food to my house. It gets good stars for having great coffee, pastries, bagels, and KNISH (which was completely unexpected here in the South). It looses stars because every time I order hot breakfast food (not pastry or bagel) it's pretty meh. The omelets have all the ingredients they list, but no seasonings, or any real skill or style in assembling anything together. The last time I ordered a vegetarian omelet the vegetables inside were only half cooked (generally I don't want to crunch on things in my omelet) and today I ordered the potato latkes. I was very excited to be ordering them from a legitimate Jewish deli, but when they came out they were very clearly made at some previous time, frozen, and reheated (badly). The potatoes were doing that spongy/watery thing frozen potatoes can do. They re-heated them for me again and they were slightly better, but I really feel like a latke (that is only available on weekends) is not all that tough to make fresh. However, my boyfriend is completely enamored with their eggs benedict. I find their hollandaise a little meh, but then I just started making my own at home, so perhaps my standards are too high. They also only have bottled water available, which chafes me, because I'm usually there for breakfast and dehydrated from the night. The lunch side of things is slightly better. Their sandwiches tend to be a little on the salty and greasy side, but sometimes that's exactly what you want. I recommend you stick to the bakery side of things and enjoy the coffee to have a great breakfast experience at this deli.

Good food but hours on the door aren't really their hours. Tried to stop in on Sunday afternoon but apparently their kitchen closes at 2:45, not 9:00 like they advertise.

Outstanding omelets! John Wayne potatoes are great and the jalapeño an cheese grits are to die for. Get there early for breakfast on the weekend or you'll be standing :)

I can not say enough good things about this place. EVERYTHING is amazing. Some of my favorites are the tomato pie, the wonderful desserts (so many to choose from!), as well as the coffee.

Ok for Summerville but does not come close to NY deli's. Cashier not friendly. Owner yelled at cashier about pricing chart. Wouldn't drive from Chas. to eat again.
