Wow, Spartanburg is really lucky to have quite a few great places to eat (non chains). Back Porch offers some great N.O. dishes that taste as close to authentic as I have had outside of N.O. itself and perhaps a place in Orlando I used to frequent. And I have been to SEVERAL "Cajun" restaurants. The decor is reminiscent of the French Quarter but not tacky. We dined on the bottom floor (did not go up to see the upstairs). There is also a nice outside area in which to eat. We got the Back Porch Puppies, a nice corn puppy ball filled with cheese and pepper bits served with a mustard based sauce. Very savory and tasty especially when paired with Abita beer. (They have several Abita offerings available.) The Hurricane I had was delish. Not syrupy sweet but the kind of sweet and tangy you expect from a top shelf Hurricane with quality fruit juices and liquors. We then moved on to the crap bisque. Let me tell you, they don't skimp on the crab meat. Every spoonful had a lot of crab. The bisque was nice, velvety and creamy. Was so very happy with this! For our main dish (here for Lunch BTW), my husband had the Oyster Po' Boy which he said was great. I am no fan of oysters but he's had a few in his day ;-) I had the "Mobster Heading South" sandwich - an N.O. take on an Italian. Lots and lots of flavor and great meats. Flavor, flavor, flavor. I hear all those folks talk about really good sandwiches on Food TV and stuff and this is the kind of thing I imagine they are talking about. I can't emphasize how nice the staff is. You definitely are made to feel welcome and they do whatever they can to make sure you are satisfied. If I had one tip to give, if you do view their menu online, there are some dishes that are served only for dinner. The gentleman we spoke to about the 'gator told us that it was a dinner menu offering but he was more than happy to make it for us for lunch if we liked. So if there is something you have your heart set on, you can call and ask. BTW, drink prices are really, really reasonable as well.

Aosphere was nice but food was not good. I took a group of people there for a business dinner and many ordered steaks and they were overcooked by two grades.

Just ok. The service was delayed and it took about 30 minutes to get our food. The porch puppies were awesome as an appetizer. I got the shrimp poy boy and was not impressed. Was expecting larger shrimp but instead received little popcorn shrimp. I'll try this place again, because the atmosphere was nice, and their looks to be some good food selections. I just won't ever get the poy boy again.

Dinner date night started off great. Yes, it was busy and I'm fine with waiting for a table, usually that means we made a great decision. Love the atmosphere and the decor. Our waitress started off wonderfully, she was very friendly and took our drink orders and we looked over the menu. It was about 15 minutes later and we flagged down our waitress to take our dinner order. And then... we never saw her again. Literally! We waited almost an hour for our food, trying to be patient while seeing people leave without receiving their food or some not even getting their order taken in 30 minutes. The whole night was terrible and it was basically all server related. The shrimp and grits I eventually got was great. The food quality is great, but the service stinks big time. Someone needs to straighten out the front of the house

Outstanding fare to be found here at the Back Porch. Perfect mix of new south and Cajun. Don't pass this place up for your next outing in Spartanburg!

Good food and good music on Friday and Saturday nights. Wish it was a little easier to find we would go more often.

First time here. The building they're in is amazing - tons of character. Service is slow but they're nice. The appetizers were great, but everyone said their entrees were "Eh. So so." Definitely order the poppers (hushpuppies with pimento cheese and jalapeños). I'd plan to go somewhere else if there's a time constraint. We had a big party and the food took about 10/15 minutes to get every person's food out.

The Back Porch claims to bring New Orleans flavor to Upstate. Fooey. The Back Porch BBQ ribs lacked flavor and very dry. The Mardi Gras Chicken with Creole honey mustard was like cheese whiz mixed with honey and bacon topping was not fully cooked. As a person that grew up in New Orleans, this is the flavors of New Orleans?

This has to be the coolest restaurant in Spartanburg; With a very New Orleans bayou ambiance. Very cozy dining area & bar. I had the cajun pork Mac & cheese. Very nice twist served on a bowel of flat bread. One of our dinner guest had a small problem with their meal but the owner responded quickly to correct the problem. He also comped the meal and treated us to some incredibly delicious desserts. I will be returning to try the burgers.

This place has lots of potential, and I was very excited to finally get to try it out. Sadly, I predict they will be out of business soon. The good news: The restaurant and outdoor seating is gorgeous. They got us seated right away even though the parking lot looked full. The bad news: The service was horrible. The waiter was not rude or anything, he just didn't seem to have time for us. I don't like to complain about wait staff because you never know what else might be going on beyond his or her control, but still. It took FOREVER just to get our drinks, and then we were shorted a beverage. 20 minutes later we found out they were out of that particular beer. Why so long to figure that out? It took almost TWO hours to get our entrees. There was no explanation, apology, or anything. Lucky for us, we were with friends and there was live music, so we passed the time without being angry. We got an appetizer of fried pickles which tasted okay (nothing special) but the snack helped keep us from getting faint as we waited and waited. I am actually more upset today than last night that we spent so much money on mediocre food and poor service. If you decide to go, maybe order a drink at the bar, and head out to the outdoor seating to enjoy the music. Don't know if it is appropriate to say here, but head over to Delaney's if you want to feel like a valued customer and get your food in a timely manner. Hoping The Back Porch will get it together soon, but don't know when and if I'll ever go back.

This is a difficult review for me to write because this place has a lot of potential. Sorry for the length. First, the place is very quaint. It is hard to find at first, but not a big deal. Outside and inside it has plenty of atmosphere. The hostess talked us into sitting outside on the "back porch." This was nice at first, but the porch is in need of some maintenance. It would probably look better after dark. We enjoyed being outside until the food came, and then we were attacked by house flies we could never get rid of. We skipped dessert because the flies were too annoying. Not the restaurant's fault -- but be aware if you sit outside. The "porch puppy" hush puppies were awesome. We also had vodka-infused pink lemonade drinks that were great. So far, it was at least a 4 star experience. Then the trouble started. Our entrees arrived before our appetizer salads. They asked us if we still wanted the salads, and we said o.k. It took another 10 minutes to get the two salads while our entrees cooled. On top of that, they brought my wife fries with her meal (not mentioned on the menu) without giving her an option of a different side item. She didn't want fries, and asked for something else. This would have been a good opportunity to fix the salad timing issue, but they just took her plate back, scrapped off the fries, brought it back out on the same plate, and she waited another 15 minutes for a baked potato... So the timing of the whole meal was totally off, especially for her. She had just her entree with no side, then her salad, then her side. Not good. We never saw a manager before the check came. Then they had overcharged us $9 for each salad, instead of the $2 side salad with an entree charge. The waitress argued with us over whether we were entitled to the $2 salad, and we pointed it out clearly on the menu. At that point, we asked for a manager. The manger was not super apologetic, and comped us the $4 worth of salads and the $6 appetizer -- so $10 on a $60 tab. An underwhelming accomodation since the whole meal was really messed up. On top of that we had to ask for refills on drinks, and we never got the bread that comes with all the meals.... We saw that as we were leaving. A meal that started out really well went bad really quick. This was early in the evening, the place was not busy, and they really could have fixed this -- they just didn't. It's a shame when you have a cool place, an interesting menu, and good food, paired with poor service and mostly indifferent management. I really hope this wasan off night for them and that they are better than this. I feel liking giving one star, but I will give two stars for the potential that I think this place has... But I won't be back.

Will not go back. First time visit and was worried when I arrived and there were no cars in the parking lot. The patio could be really great if it were clean and had better lighting. They had a karaoke couple providing entertainment on the stage. The entire performance had an umbrella in front of the stage that needed moved. The food was just OK nothing to brag about. The service was terrible. The place was empty and I had to chase down the waiter for refills on drinks. The waiter never checked in on us once to see how everything was. Something is wrong with the management of this restaurant when you wait this long for service.

Very disappointed in the quality of food. We waited 2hours for high priced food that was the same caliber as Schwann's. I felt bad for the waitress as it was clearly out if her control. Quite frankly the kitchen was under staffed and under qualified. We wi not b back.

Eh, it's okay. New Orleans is my favorite southern city so the decor was cool. Beads were strewn about and there were Nawlins signs galore. It really did scream "Bourbon St.". They also had live music which was a plus. We sat at the bar and watched the bartender go take drink and food orders from tables. So he was absent...a lot. That was odd because the place wasn't packed and there were, what seemed like, other servers there. On to the food. We had the fried pickles & crab beignets as appetizers...yum. They actually came out pretty quickly. Then we waited forever for our entrees which were pork tenderloin po'boys. I still don't understand why they took 30 minutes to come or why the food was cold. I would like think they were ready and nobody went to get them. The appetizers were better than the cold entree. I'm a big fan of excellent service and this place leaves a lot to be desired...not sure I'd go back.

Food 2 Service 3 Cleanliness 1 Decor 4 My margarita was more like a tequila sunrise. Horrible The beer was cold Bread was good but incredibly hard Alligator was good Salmon was good but the veggies were cold Steaks were very inconsistent Not worth coming here. It took forever for the food.

Worst experience I have had. I brought some business clients here for dinner and we sat outside. It wasn't long before we were greeted with a screech from a female patron. Turns out she was screechin at the 12" rats moving in and out of the brush next to the patio. While comically entertaining I did not appreciate it and we will not be back ever! Rats can be trapped and relocated or perhaps a large privacy fence is in order.

Hate to report this, but we had dinner tonight at Back Porch and it was A-W-F-U-L. I won't go into all of the details here, but the "lowlights" included me having to refill my own beverage TWICE, receiving the wrong food, having to chase someone down to try to get a bill so we could leave, etc. I expressed a concern to a couple of employees there, but no one there really seemed to care at all. It wasn't just us, because other tables were having to clear their own tables when they finished eating (because they staff didn't seem interested in doing so). I could go on about never actually receiving what I ordered, mediocre food, table not being cleared, etc, but I digress. I am very disappointed in this, because we had loved eating at Back Porch in the past -- but no more. It was that bad!!!

My husband and I were excited to try out this restaurant tonight however the server, service, and food was terrible. My steak was raw and food very salty. I had to ask for a steak knife which took 5 minutes to come to the table. Our drinks were slow getting refills. The prices were more upscale but we did not get the quality of service we were expecting. Good atmosphere with jazz band but needs some TLC. DISAPPOINTING! !!

Atmosphere and decor is really nice, food is decent, nothing overwhelmingly great. Biggest thing that will limits back porch is it's service...its painfully slow service. Very nice people, but the way things are run is very unorganized it seems. I'm sure as time goes on this will improve as will the food. Very nice addition to the food scene in sparkle city, but I would definitely like to see many improvements for this place to reach it's potential..which in my opinion should be very high.

Sorry guys, but that was the worse experience I've had here. I brought my wife and another couple who had not eaten at your establishment before and I bragged on you all the way there. What a shocker. Very disappointed in the service, but the food was the largest disappointment. Are you getting ready to close? Sure seemed like it.

I absolutely love the location and atmosphere of this restaurant. It had a very authentic New Orleans vibe and the amazing decor and revitalized location is nothing short of striking. However, this sadly does not carry over into their food. The fried pickles were so spicy and over fried (if that's even a thing) that I couldn't eat them at all. My friends steak was not only cooked improperly it was a very poor cut of meat. The crawfish étouffée was pretty good, but culinary platting 101 states to please wipe the edges of the dish before serving so one feels as if they are eating off a clean surface. All in all a very sad and forgettable experience. Won't be going back here.

It was really good! Great service. Great atmosphere, especially good music. We shared the pulled pork with Mac and cheese and the Mardi gras chicken. Didn't love the Cajun fries but everything else was delicious. Great margarita and craft beer.

Came here for my aunt's 50th birthday party. Called like a month ahead to make a reservation - we were expecting around 20 people. They told us that we could have the "upstairs" room, that it would be private, that we could put up decorations (we were having a 70s themed party), and that we didn't really have a "time limit" on when we needed to leave. We arrived about 30 minutes early wearing our "costumes" to find that were going to seat us right in the smack dab middle of the lower level of the restaurant with barely enough room to get to our seats (which were several short of what we had made our reservation for). We spoke to the manager who said that "they never make reservations for Saturday night". We gave them the date, time, and name of the lady we had spoken with to make the reservation... they FINALLY moved us over to a corner on the other side of the bar. Still not what we had expected, but better. The wait staff was another disappointment. I realize that it was a Saturday and busy. The had some sort of "dualing pianos" upstairs going on... so it was extremely noisy. I felt so bad for the poor kid that was waiting on us (ONE person waiting on 20+ people) - it was his second night. @_@ FINALLY ordered... food FINALLY arrived (before most people even got there drinks... which was bad because we had been there for forever all ready). Most of the food was ok... mine really wasn't though. My husband and I ordered the steak - medium well. It was completely raw. We sent it back to be "nuked". It came back (30 minutes later) the exact same. I was just ready to go home by this point. The manager did come over to apologize about the food (after I had to send it back again) and did give us our meal free, which was very nice. Overall, I think that this place could be good. I would like to return for a "normal" visit to give it a second try. The atmosphere was nice and cozy and the food had potential. BUT... I do not think that it is a very good place for a larger group or a party of any sort.

This resturaunt is a must if you like cajun food. I highly recommend the chicken salad and the fried green tomato sandwich with pimento cheese. The salads are also amazing. I only wish I had room for desert.

I've been here three times, and each time it's been pretty good. It is busy, and I can see that most people here were put off by that. I've never had a bad experience here, and the hush puppies are great.

Went out with another couple tonight and our two teenagers. The menu was very friendly, as was our waiter Jerry! I had called early in the day to find out if they take reservations and they do, however, they had taken all the reservations that they allowed when we called. We decided to head in a little early @ 6:30 and were seated almost immediately. Drinks from the bar came quickly and were delicious. We also ordered an appetizer for the table to share that arrived promptly as well. Even more impressive was the short amount of time it took our dinners to arrive. All of enjoyed our meals, were not "wowed" but everything was quite good. We will definitely go back and try out some of the other dishes. ***Mardi Gras chicken was Delish!

The only reason it is getting 1 star is because I have to give it 1 to review. We tried to make reservation for a birthday party of 8. They were not taking reservations due to a event going on. But told us we could be seated in a timely manner. When we arrived our wait time was 30 minutes after 45 minutes we asked again we were told another 30 minutes. After finally seated we waited 15 minutes to get a drink order. Then we we were brought a limited menu which we did not know thy were doing on this night. The owner frank came over and promised us free appetizers and the full menu since we were bot informed. After 3 tea refills by anyone we could get flagged down and 45 minutes later we received a hushpuppy and french fry with sour cream. After asking again for food. We received 2 brown salads a ok nacho 2 shrimp and grits poorly seasoned a prime rib with regular potatoes when advertised pimento cheese potatoes and horseradish sauce which was missing. And then another prime rib which was not a prime rib but a ribeye. And a gumbo with uncooked rice they failed to bring the other side of gumbo. Once all was said and done our table paid for no food and i received my correct prime rib in a togo box to take hone at 10:30 pm when arriving home i opened my box to yet another rib eye that tasted like it had been drenched in Lowery season salt! I will never go back even with the free gift card i received! Disgusting!!!

This place is not worth the time or money. My husband and I have been here before and our last experience was okay and that's it. We decided to give it a try since my husband had just gotten off a 16 hour shift and I had been at the doctor all day. It's an hour drive for us to drive to Back Porch. When we got there, the host said that a woman would be our waitress and low and behold, he ended up being the one that waited on us. He got our drink order in an okay time frame and about five minutes later we got our drinks and the waiter even remembered that my husband uses tons of sugar in his coffee. He eventually came back and got our appetizer order and then he disappeared for a while. I asked for a minute to look at the menu, that was it. He eventually came back and got our orders and quickly left again. Before I continue with my review and before anyone has any comments to throw at me, keep in mind that I can actually cook!! My problem with tonight was the time it took to get food and the fact that the food was crap! It took 30 minutes to get Gator zingers which were so greasy the coating fell off of it. Oh well. Another 30 minutes went by and we got salads that were full of water and a cup of tasteless gumbo with hard white rice in it. I have pictures. We sat with empty glasses for almost 45 minutes. When the salads and nasty gumbo showed up, I had enough. I had spent a whole day getting prodded by a doctor while being in pain and having to wait for over an hour for less than mediocre food was the last straw for me. I went off. We didn't see our server but maybe twice the whole time and my husband had to go get him to come to the table. I went off again. It's completely nonsense to have to wait over an hour for food that isn't cooked properly and for terrible service. I said a few choice words to him and he ran off. We waited another 15 minutes for a check that was never going to come... I eventually had to get up to find someone to tell that we wanted our check. I have no clue who I talked to but he said that he was on his way to our table. I'm guessing he was a manager, but some manager he is, he spent his time up at the bar instead of talking to unhappy customers. I had choice words for him and told him how long we had waited and that we wanted our check and he said, "you have no check, please don't swear..." My swearing wasn't the problem. His problem was that they were dead and the poor people behind us hadn't gotten their food either. He was afraid I was going to cause a riot or something. Had we stayed and gotten our food on time, the check would have been well over $40+ and that's normally how much we spend when we go. I hope the owners are happy to have slacker staff. Apparently they don't care about customer satisfaction. We will NEVER go to Back Porch again.

WOW....what a joke..don't even waste your time going to this restaurant. The so called "manager" Tom is so rude!!! The food is mediocre. Don't waste your time at this restaurant until a new manager is hired.

What kind of Cajun restaurant doesn't serve Gumbo for lunch!! Drove out from Greenville because it was on their online menu only to be told they only serve it at dinner. Very disappointed.

Food was ok. Atmosphere was nice and band was very good. Food was over priced. Steak and baked potato undercooked. I would recommend the appetizers. So basically if you want drinks, apps, and atmosphere I would recommend going.
