I am orignally from SC and love mustard based BBQ. I live in Atlanta now, and although there is good BBQ in the Atl, I am totally willing to dive 4 hours to eat at Wise. If that's not an endorsement I don't know what is. The hash rocks! and so do the ribs. Yum!

There is nothing, NOTHING, fancy about this BBQ shack. You serve yourself from a small selection of items (BBQ, hash, green beans, bread) and then pull up a spot at one of the picnic tables in the dining area. Good BBQ, but honestly not the best I have had. Worth a try!

Went to Wise BBQ based on comments in Yelp. Big mistake. What a DUMP! Folding tables and chairs. Dirty. Wanted to just leave but was intimidated by the big bruiser. Horrible, dry food. No BBQ sauce, just mustard sauce. Pork was dry and tasted of mustard, which is not good for us that hate mustard. Self-serve on paper plates. But, they make up for it all with high prices! Do NOT bother going! It would be unWise.

I married into a SC family 14+ years ago. Before this my experience with an SC mustard sauce had been beyond minimal. The first time they took me to Wise's and I got a mouthful of that yellow I about coughed my head off. My sinuses cleared, and I could taste goodness...Carolina goodness. I've read other reviews here tearing them apart for not having barbecue sauce (mustard based bbq sauce is barbecue sauce) or not having a fancy building or fancy decor, or even being stared at by the locals (to be fair, other reviewers that mentioned that, it was probably all in your mind.) When I've gone I was treated kindly by Wayne and the family and ate till I was full before eating some more. The pork rinds are the tippety-top of tip-top. The ribs are a bit salty for my taste, but that doesn't stop me from eating them, but the chopped pork is the draw for me. This is a county place. There is nothing fancy here, and why would you want it to be all gussied up in the first place. One price, sweet or unsweet tea, water, lemonade, and a co-cola machine out front. The place is run by good people, staffed by good people, and hosts a clientele of good people. So grab a plate and get in line. Take a seat next to somebody you don't know, and enjoy that yellow.

Self serve soup kitchen atmosphere. Decent food. Small selection. Prison block building. Stared down by locals. Awkward. Other than that, beats the hell out of fast food every day of the week. The only thing missing were dueling banjos.

I grew up eating Wise's BBQ and over the years I have tried dozens of other BBQ places but I think Wise ribs are the best! Their sauce is mustard based and the ribs are cut into single rib portions, the meat is tender but with character not mushy (you will need a toothpick after). Also the ribs are consistent, I've found some places one week the ribs are too dry or under seasoned and the next there perfect it seems at Wises there always the same, pretty darn good! The sauce seems to be infused in the meat and its hard for me to stop eating these ribs even when I feel full. I also like the pulled pork and it is good but not a standout like the ribs are to me.. Wise's is only open on Thursday - Saturday and I have to say guy taking orders (Mr. Wise) does not seem very friendly but It has not stopped me from getting a 5LB pan of take out ribs every time I happen to ride by the place when there open. There location is remote but the ribs are worth the drive.
