Great place to bring a pup with you and chill outside. Love the edamame and the tasty dipping sauce. They have much more delicious brisket options than Dive N Boar for way cheaper. Servers are very friendly and hospitable. It draws a good local crowd who are fun to meet and chat with, too. UJ, if you are reading, maybe branch to Greer, too :P

Ok - took my wife here later on A Sat night for drinks and burger and was pleasantly surprised by the good service and delicious cheeseburger. They serve to 10:45 so this will be our new go to place as my wife gets off work kind of late. Very clean and comfortable outside seating - we sat out back and it was nice. We will be back to try more menu offerings. Good job!

Good, but will definitely be better when it cools down outside. Beer selection was a bit lacking tonight with the server telling us the ones they didn't have. Seating is limited inside mostly to larger tables, but still gives you the outdoors feeling with the open garage doors. It is very loud, so you probably need to sit outside if you want to have conversation without yelling. The tacos are very good. We tried blackened tilapia and the smoky brisket - the very unique flavor of the latter left us wanting more. Chips are run of the mill white corn, not particularly crisp but maybe it was because of the humidity level. The salsa is homemade, thick and spicy. Will definitely try again when we can comfortably sit outside. An idea: big fans to move the air around more and keep the flies away.

My wife and I really enjoy this place. Great to sit outside and have a beer. The food is good bar food with delicious burgers ( the Steinbeck is my favourite). Craft beers on tap. All in all great place to go. Note that parking is awful.

Good vibe and great outdoor seating. The food was good, not outstanding, but what you would expect at a place like this. Service is slow but people watching is good so it really doesn't matter!

Fun/relaxed outdoor space with pretty decent food. Had the hummus and firecracker sliders, both of which I would order again. Seems to be dog friendly, which is a plus for me. Parking is a bit awkward and lacking. Try the skinny margarita.

Universal Joint is a great neighborhood bar that has great inside and outdoor seating. They have a great beer selection including Stone IPA always on tap. My favorite thing on the menu is the brisket nachos. I am not a big brisket eater but the combo of the meat, their special queso, beans, and jalapeños is mouth watering good. I go almost once a week just for these bad boys! A must try for EVERYONE!

Instutional grade food at best...cocktails are pre packaged swill...such a great location and such a shame....hipsters dig it

I ordered the Steinbeck burger - pimento cheese, bacon, jalapeño, ranch. It was very tasty but could have used a few more peppers. I opted for the tater tots and they were done right: crunchy! The place itself is intimate so I'm sure it fills up quickly. There are a few tv's but I don't imagine this would be the place to watch the big game. There is seating in the bar area and a separate dining area as well. Many beers to choose from and they feature a rotating beer menu so you can't go wrong. Well, if you like beer you can't... Give this place a try! It's a nice place that would be great to be a regular. Perfect for a burger and a brew. Quiet atmosphere which is a nice break from Downtown's often annoying scene.

Really cool space that is very open and a nice outdoor patio to sit out on in the Summer and Fall. The food was very simple which I appreciated. I went with a large group and most people got salads. Both the buffalo and chicken + arugula were very tasty and healthy. They don't overdo the dressing which is rare for a restaurant.

  • Jack B.

Normally the burgers are great, but this time they were overcooked. We wanted mediu rare and they were far from that point. Good staff and normally good food.

A great place for an afternoon meeting! I love sitting at the bar and having an Angry Orchard cider! Their chicken and arugula salad is great for a light lunch and if you want something heavier, go for the tacos or burger. The plentiful shaded outdoor seating makes this a popular spot for locals!

As good a burger as you can find anywhere, and the ambience is quite pleasant. There are several of these restaurants around the southeast, and this is a great ones.

I have been to Universal Joint several times. I go with friends after work or hanging out with my mom on the weekends! They have a great selection of beers. I have had the BBQ brisket nachos twice now and it pairs perfect with a nice cold beer. The brisket is a great combination with the queso, cilantro-corn and red onion. I have also had the old 1-2 and the blackened tilapia tacos. Such great variety and good food, YUM!

  • Gretchen Y.

Waited for a menu for 10 minutes after we were told to sit wherever we'd like. Decided to stick it out, but after 20 mins of waiting for the waiter to come back to take our order we left. Really wanted to like this place, but crummy service is unacceptable on a slow Monday night with ample staff.

Great local spot! Awesome food w lots of flavor and good size portions - best blackened fish tacos in town. Perfect for after work beers or a low key meal w friends. Lots of open air, outdoor seating park in lots across stone ave

I really enjoy dining "al fresco!!" Whether inside, with all the doors and windows flung wide open, or on a terrace underneath the open sky, dining outside can be a very refreshing prospect for an afternoon of leisure activity. U-Joint caters to the outdoor dining experience very well! All the walls open up like garage doors, allowing for cool breezes and warm light to fill the entire restaurant. I consider this establishment a perfect "goto" on many a mild afternoon for a beer on the patio with my buddies. The food is well prepared, and in my mind falls categorically into a bit of a "pub" style. There is a little more forethought paid to the ingredients, elevating it from mundane to a little more interesting fare. They have a fully stocked bar and for the most part keep a decent selection of beers on tap. The price points are only slightly elevated. It's really the atmosphere which you are paying for here. Its located right up in the heart of the North Main district, which gives it a much quieter feel than the "hustle and bustle" of downtown. Its quite pleasant actually, with a relaxed neighborhood feel. It is a smaller venue so it fills up quickly during clement weather, so its best to go between the "rush" times of lunch or dinner. One huge drawback is that they don't have a ton of parking, so finding a spot can be tricky. Service has always been adequate, with no major concerns and the staff are very friendly. Definitely give this place a shot! Enjoy, Cary

This place has a really nice atmosphere. There are different spaces ranging from indoor to bar to indoor/ outdoor to outdoor so you should be able to find a comfy spot. There's a new tech jukebox. Casual place for anyone. Pretty good & prompt service. Food was really good although I don't recommend the lemon pepper wings. The Buffalo wings were decent but I really liked the Hummus plate. They have a really awesome cocktail with Tennessee Honey. Fair pricing. Will be back. Looking forward to trying other dishes.

My girlfriend and I moved to the North Main area of Greenville from the San Francisco Bay Area about 6 months ago - so we know good food good service and a cool place when we see it. Greenville has lots of great places to eat and drink but Universal Joint is the one place we go to the most. We live nearby and have the pleasure of walking down to UJ anytime we want. We have found the staff - Andrew Rob Tara Laurie et al - to be friendly welcoming and attentive. As others have mentioned, the brisket in any shape or form is fantastic but so are the Tilapia Tacos and Arugula Salad. UJ is our "Cheers". Nice people good food and affordable.......We love UJ!

I've been watching this place to see what it was becoming, and now that it's open, what a happy surprise. I like what they did with the space. For what could feel like a small or closed-in bar, with garage door 'walls', it is open and airy. It was very comfortable inside yesterday when the temperature was close to 90. They have a covered porch area in front (right on Stone Ave), but also one out back which faces trees and feels much cooler. Both patios are doggie friendly, so bring your best friend along! Also relaxed and kid-friendly, so bring them along, too. Full bar, several beers on tap including local beers. We didn't try the food (shareable bar foods, burgers and such) but the plates I saw were going back to the kitchen empty, which is a good sign! Currently they have awkward and insufficient parking, and the nearby streets are permit parking only, so don't get yourself towed. Hopefully they are putting more parking out back.

Loved it . The location and especially the outdoor seating is brilliant. From the outside you would think that this place is very expensive, but it really isn't. Tacos and sandwiches were great. Will try out drinks the next time I visit.

Stopped in for a quick lunch, i was greeted by a friendly staff member who was very knowledgable about the menu as well as the tap selection. The special that day was the brisket nachos which sounded like a good choice for a Sunday lunch.. The. Best. Brisket. Nachos. Thin crispy tortilla chips, a heap of finely chopped brisket with a fine layer of queso. I would recommend these to anyone anytime they are available.

Great food, attentive staff, awesome food! Lemon pepper wings are amazing as are the brisket nachos!

Uninspired menu meets bad parking. Ordered the brisket philly. This little gem came served on a semi stale sysco systems roll with some school lunch quality tater tots. Beer selection is passable and service was decent. Good if you are just going to drink but there are much better options for food out there.

    (2)
  • Christopher M.

Thought this place was great. Food was outstanding (had the brisket philly: not usually a fan of brisket but theirs is extremely good and smoked), good selection of craft beers (stone IPA is a favorite), service was very good contrary to another reviewers comment, and atmosphere is really unique. I agree there is limited parking and it was hot in the doldrums of summer, but we were prepared to walk thanks to the heads up from the other review and the fans they have are pretty effective. Both the walk and heat made the beer more enjoyable, anyway. One opportunity for improvement would be more comfortable stools, but it's a minor complaint and it is a bar, after all. Was expecting a mediocre bar and was very pleasantly surprised to get a very enjoyable meal. Recommended.

  • Matt H.

Food is about a 3 on a good day, beer selection is decent, but there are better places for both within a few minutes downtown. Service knocks this place down to a 1. Terrible each time we've gone. Tried it 3 times to see if it was a fluke/ bad night and had the same bad service each time. That's a pattern.

Great food but the parking needs to have more spaces. The street next door is permit only parking so watch out.

My parents were in town, and we stopped by for Sunday lunch. I had the brisket tacos and they were to die for!!! My parents both had the buffalo salad, and we're just as impressed with their meal as I was. Not a single piece of food was left on any of our plates if that gives you any idea of how amazing the food was. Will definitely be back again!!!

I go here at least once every two weeks during my lunch break. Always good service and food. I have tried multiple items on the menu. The best are the burgers, the blackened fish tacos and the wings.

As a first time visitor I did not know what to expect. A WEIRD NAME that really does not tell you what they serve. What would I find in a converted gas/service station? PARKING PROBLEM: The first issue was parking. There really isn't any. Finally figured out that there was a lot across the street that people were using. SEATING PROBLEM: When we arrived, all the tables were occupied. They don't have a waiting list. Basically, we were told to watch for people close to finishing and then hover near the table. First to grab the table gets it. Kind on irritating, especially when you are trying to finish your dinner and have conversation with friends. I don't like people watching me that intently. WEATHER PROBLEM: Most of their seating is outdoors under a high canopy. If the weather is rainy or blustery, you don't want to be there. It is pretty much a fair weather place only. ABOUT THE FOOD: The members of our foursome all had different things and we all agreed it was tasty and properly prepared. Nothing extraordinary, but good. However, I wouldn't rate it high enough to earn a "must eat there" status. SERVICE: Once we were able to secure a table, service was good. The server was clearly experienced and on top of her game. She engaged with us and we enjoyed the banter.

I was so excited to try this out but pretty let down. The obvious negatives first: 1. NO PARKING 2. It's pretty much open-air so it's gonna be hot in July I knew these things and dressed appropriately and gave myself adequate time to find a parking spot and hike to the Universal Joint. The menu has the usual bar fare with some interesting items. But the real negative here is the poor service. Terrible. Our waiter didn't come to the table at all for about 10 minutes, then took another 10 minutes to bring out our drinks and take our orders. He didn't write anything down and he seemed kinda out of it (or maybe just a stoner) so my friend and I took bets on which order was going to be wrong. It turns out both of our orders were wrong. Oh well--her burger was OK and my grilled buffalo chicken sandwich (minus the blue cheese that was supposed to come on it ???) was pretty good. I think this place will do OK as a watering hole for the surrounding neighborhood but it's not worth the hassle to find parking for me to return for the poor service and so-so food.

Decent wings, they should have more flavors though. Our service was pretty slow but tolerable since he was busy. I'll def give it a second chance. And like everyone else has stated, the parking is non existent, good luck finding a spot!!

Good restaurant. Getting there. Food is good. They're still getting things figured out. Only been open two weeks, so I can sympathize.

Great place to sit out in the early evening with friends. Menu is fairly priced and choices are unique. Staff was very courteous and attentive. We sat at our table for a few hours and weren't rushed to leave at all. Nice place to chill.

    (4)
  • Matthew N.

Not worth your time. Parking is non existent. It's seat yourself so you have no idea who is next for a table. The servers don't even know who is at their table. Then people are hovering around you waiting for you to leave. Food was not good enough to make up for the rest. Don't even try unless it's an abnormal eating time.

A large group of co-workers and I went here the other day (4/24) and the food is really good. I didn't hear anyone complain about taste, portions, or any of the other issues some places have. As stated with almost all of the other reviews parking stinks and there is very limited seating. However, with the parking there are several other local businesses that allow U.J. to use their lots (a small walk never killed anyone). We had a large group, 12 people, and they were willing to hold a table for us. The only couple of issues I had was that my dish did come with a small side of sour cream and an extra was going to cost .50, granted not a huge hit to the pocket book but come on now. Also, with our large group most of us all got our food a different times. Granted not everyone arrived at the same time, but most of the table 6-8 of us did order at the same time, so a little work on the timing is needed (small fix though). Good food at reasonable prices are going to ensure a return visit. Plus, they are pet friendly as long as the pets are outside.

My girlfriend and I ate at The Universal Joint in Clayton Georgia and were very excited when we found out they are now in Greenville. Before you go, make sure you check their page for parking. We ended up parking right across the street at a salon which were generous enough to let the customers park. The other business, not so generous. Not thrilled with the location. But I am very thrilled that they are on Stone Avenue away from downtown parking garages and crowds. So, don't be a sour sport about the parking. It will be well worth it when you get inside. I got the black bean burger with Swiss cheese and mushrooms. Probably the best vegetarian burger Greenville has to offer. My girlfriend got the blackened tilapia tacos. She kept going on how good they were. Service was friendly and casual. But all our needs for an enjoyable meal were met. We will be back! So glad that something enjoyable like this decided to come and bring more business to the Stone Avenue area. The only complaint I have is that when we walked in top forty music was playing in the airways. Wrecking Ball was blaring through the speakers. Which followed by all today's poppy main stream music. Not something I would enjoy having drinks to. Hopefully in the future this Universal Joint will come through like others with local music and entertainment. Looking forward to another visit. And yes, they are open till midnight.

  • Greg M.

The worst service I have ever experienced in my life. The hours are listed as being open until 2am, however at midnight the last communication I received was "I can't leave until you leave" from our server who never actually gave us service. Is there not a manager present at this establishment? The bartender could not even remember what beer he had poured or who it belonged to. Maybe it was because the employees were taking shots and smoking while we were looking for service. The staff is a bunch of rejects from other bars in the area. I live down the street, work in the industry, and was truly excited to have an option in our area, however after this experience without a change I will never go back. Terrible, the ownership should be ashamed of themselves, for a chain, even a small chain, this is pathetic. For the record the bartender was the one that always wears a Bluejays hat and the waitress was the one with the check presenter shoved half way down her trashy white shorts.

Place is cute, I love the open air thing. Service was great, no complaints there friendly speedy! Prices were very fair, my only complaint is they do change the sauces that the menu says it comes with, I got a spicy jalapeno sauce on my brisket taco had I known it came with that I would have asked for it on the side, the menu said it was an avocado sauce.. if you are going to switch it up just let the customer know!! That being said the food was good, I've had better, but I've had worse too.
