We stopped here for Sunday brunch recently after a long walk from the outskirts of town. Upon entering, there was no hostess, but the bartender asked us to seat ourselves wherever we'd like. The first indication that this place was not serious establishment was the thrift-store armchair that came apart when I sat down on it. Not cool. The waitstaff was limited to one server and the bartender when she could break free, so the service was agonizingly slow, even for initial drinks. I don't mind waiting for an entree if I can at least have a beer in hand within 15 minutes of ordering it, but that didn't happen. The rest of the service was also slow, and seemed to be distracted by a large party next to us and dropped glass in the bar area, and also just seemed to disappear for a while. The entree I ordered (special cornbread waffle with chili) was nicely conceived and tasted ok when it finally came out, but was served up close to room temperature. If I believed the staff had the time or the inclination to prepare a new one before I lost patience, I may have engaged them. So, I doubt we'll be going back anytime soon for anything more substantial than a drink at the bar.

I got the sheppard's pie and my husband got the bison burger. We had tasted their lamb burger during last years fall for Greenville and have been wanting to go to the restaurant since. Well we were NOT let down. The food was as good as we remembered. This place is not very friendly for picky people but if your open to trying something new and tasty this is ur place.

Sorry to give one star but this meal left a lastingredients impression and not a good one. Service I give 4 stars...friendly but I had to ask for coffee refill It wasn't busy for 1:00 Sunday brunch. The cup of Joe wasn't bad I expected worse for a bar My husband had the three egg omelette with chicken and vegies.... the eggs were cooked with cold chicken and raw mushrooms raw bell pepper raw onion and avacodo and cheese and that's it I had the ham egg cheese on croissant...nothing to complain about it was what it was. I will return to try the dinner menu....

The Velo Fellow is NOT an English Gastropub at all. The other comments about the awful food and slow times out of the kitchen are right on. I'm a lover of French Onion soup and assumed that since they considered themselves a gastropub it would be really good. I even asked the waitress if it was homemade before I ordered it, to which she replied yes. Unfortunately what I got was a freakishly hot crock of Sysco french onion soup out of the can, no cheese bubbling over the crock and some little floating crouton. French Onion soup is one of the cheapest things you can make in a restaurant and to call your place a gastropub and serve pre-made, processed foods is a huge disappointment and a turn off to us. Everything we ordered from the fish and chips, to the chicken pot pie were below mediocre. We were very disappointed and won't be back. The service was pretty good but they should consider adding a few domestic beers for those that are not into foo foo beers so that they're accommodated as well. No use being a super snob and turning business away. Well, the food will do that on it's own. I really wanted to like this place I hope they turn it around. It's a great location but needs some help in the decor and cohesion of decor dept. as well.

Very good fish and chips, and a great beer selection. My wife had the Marsala tofu, which she also enjoyed. This is a cool hidden gem in Greenville.

The beer selection is outstanding and the food was delicious. The atmosphere was very comfortable but probably the only thing that kept this place from getting 5 stars was the pub atmosphere. That's not a bad thing, mind you, just not worthy of 5 stars. The wait staff was friendly and helpful, offering tastes of beers before we committed to a full glass. We both had the Cobb Salad; it was flawless. No deli meats: the chicken was freshly cooked shredded chicken breast, the bacon was hot. No scrimping on any ingredient, including the blue cheese. Multiple selections of dressing - I got the basil blue. Perhaps another drawback would be the limited menu, but hey, it's a pub! Lots of comfortable seating (leather couches and chairs) in addition to the bar and tables. Prices very reasonable also. I even liked the background music (Rolling Stones, not just their "hits"). Worth a try, by all means!

Ordered the Fish and Chips, something I always order when trying out a restaurant that serves it. The best Fish and Chips in Greenville, just beating out my original winner - Blue Ridge Brewing. Wife ordered the Hood & Boot salad and was very happy with it. Prices were good, about $10 for each thing we got. Brought our dog so we sat outside and waitress brought dog a nice bowl of water. Very friendly service as well. A new star in the constellation of wonderful downtown restaurants.

You can't go wrong with this place! There is a lengthy, diverse menu and the atmosphere is so uniquely awesome. I had the fish and chips, and it was the real deal taste wise. Perfectly flakey fried cod goodness with raw chips (freshly cut) and malt vinegar paired perfectly with my Stella Artois. I understand some people are nitpicking about the "chips" vs "crisps" business, and yes, the potatoes were not cut like American "French fries" as most expect with the traditionally British fare, but they were delicious nonetheless and this is Greenville, SC- not London. Beer selection was great, and everyone in my party raved as we were walking out the door.

Being English, I should recognise an English pub and this was not one. Pleasantly arranged bare wood tables like a pseudo gastro pub. A bizarre mock tudor wall at one end looked out of place. Good beer list and helpful service. One star rating comes from the unbelievably average falafel which were served on a bare plate and were over cooked (fried). The fish and chips (literally chips here, or crisps as the are called in UK) were not fried and poor and greasy compared to real thing. Chicken pot pie mixture had a floury starchy consistency with a strange bitter taste. If you want to know how it should be done, even if it is a long way away, try the Jones Wood Foundry in NYC.

I decided to check this place out after finding a great deal via Groupon. It was a bit hard to find (it's behind the Mellow Mushroom), but other than that I enjoyed going there. We had the fried pickles for the appetizer. I had the fish and chips, and my boyfriend had a lamb burger with a side of raw fries. We both thought the food was great. The server was a little awkward, but I was glad he wasn't frequently checking back with us while we ate. You could tell the atmosphere was a bit hipster-ish, but overall, it gave the feeling of a chill pub, which I rather enjoy. I'd definitely recommend it to friends and family.

We found this place while in a long wait for seating at a nearby restaurant and glad we did! Thanks Yelp! We decided to walk around the corner and try it out. Everyone was super friendly, the food was great (fish and chips and shepherds pie) and the prices were very reasonable. Next time we come to town, Velo will be at the top of the list!

Looking for something a little different but reasonably priced (and with beer selection a priority,) my lady and I sought out the Velo Fellow on our first trip to Greenville and a fine choice it was. We were there early (around 5) in order to finish up with plenty of time to meander over to a Drive game, so the place was empty except for the bar. We almost never orders appetizers, but when we saw that the fried green tomatoes came with pimiento cheese, it was like the decision was made for us. Even without the cheese (a big scoop in the middle of the plate), these were stand-outs, thicker than I'm accustomed to and structurally sound, the batter sticking to the fruit as it should. The pimiento cheese had us both wondering why fried green tomatoes aren't served like this as a matter of constitutional law. Outstanding. The beer list is well-curated and fans of a good brew won't be disappointed. Whatever variety of Allagash that was went great with my lamb burger, which was cooked perfectly. I always fear an overdone burger, and these folks left well enough alone, as evidenced by the juice leftover on my plate. I also tried my lady's falafel po' boy and can vouch for its tastiness. And was that a shuffle board table I spied across the room? After two beers I forgot to investigate. Next trip, perhaps.

Waaay too many nitpickers on Yelp love to argue the finer points of regional/categorical idiosyncrasies while neglecting to give credit where it's due with regard to an actual dining experience... On the other hand, I'm gonna cut the fluff and come right out and say it: we had a straight-up awesome lunch at the Feller. Food was delicious, nonpresumptuous pub fare - flavorful & juicy fish n' chips, fresh & well-seasoned felafel burger (not on the menu - gotta ask for it), and an ice-cold craft-brewed Oktoberfest to cut the late summer heat. Excellent value in my opinion. Turns out one of the owners, Kirk, has taken over the daytime wait staffing, and we thoroughly enjoyed connecting with him as he knowledgeably advised our menu selections and attentively served us. You'll appreciate the subtleties of the eclectic, reclaimed decor if you're into vintage architectural salvage, etc. That's right up my alley, so I really enjoyed talking to Kirk about his church-pew booth seats, handmade table tops, and other carefully procured pieces. If you haven't been, you need to go. It'll make you wanna go back, no question.

It's really a great and almost cozy place. Although the guests who had to sit on the workbench might have a different opinion. But they use old and unique furniture ... it just work for me. A good beer selection with knowledgeable service -- depending on the person serving you ;) -- plus good food ... with a lack of presentation, but it is still a bar and not a restaurant. Everybody was pretty satisfied with the food, but the tofu dish. It just didn't work. The service really $%^&. "be right back" means something to me and 2 sides were missing. Hence, not more than 3 stars. I think this place begs for another try ...

A laughable experience from start to finish, really. The Velo Fellow claims to be an English gastropub, but I've spent a great deal of time at genuine English gastropubs and can attest this is anything but. The decor is a bizarre mix of Tudor meets Greenwich Village meets dive bar. But I digress...my complaint is not actually with the decor at all. I found it bemusing, and even appreciated the eclectic mix of styles. Nor is my complaint with the service, for I found our waitress to be extremely attentive and friendly. Knowledgable about beer too. My complaint is with the food, which was below average and not worthy of being called gastropub fare. We started with the falafel, and I can only describe the presentation as without. The falafel arrived on a plain white plate with a tiny cup of dip - so tiny we could barely dip the falafel at all! One would think the falafel might be served in a nice bed of greens, at the very least. It looked like something I might get from a street vendor at a local fest or fare. At least it tasted alright, albeit plain. The Chicken Potted and Pied was significantly worse. I took one bite and said to my dining partner, "I think I'm eating starch," in that it had way too much flour or corn starch in it. I wasn't even able (or willing) to finish it. In addition to the starch problem, it was so bland (and the "crust" so over-cooked) all the pepper in the world couldn't provide necessary flavor. Authentic pub this is most definitely not. Nor was it a delicious dining experience.

I love this bar! Great choices of beer and bourbon. The bartenders are the best in Greenville. The French onion soup is ridiculously good and on a cold day, I crave it on a regular basis. No tv's, just good drinks and good company. Always playing good music, and they sometimes have live bands as well. My top bar.

Nifty place, definitely have to come back for a beer. Stopped by on our walk around Greenville for some early dinner. It was hot out so all I could ask for is water! The atmosphere is what makes this place awesome. I love the antique looking decor and how the menus are placed on the clipboards. Sadly the food I ordered was not up to par for my liking. I ordered the shepards pie with a side of their fries. The shepards pie was lacking in flavor throughout. The potatoes were bland and the meat on the bottom of the pie just tasted like unseasoned ground beef. The gravy was not bad but needed a little salt and a lot of pepper. The chips were not bad at all. I was disappointed in that we showed up around 430pm for our early dinner and the Eastern Feature was not ready and would not have been ready by the time we left. I really was interested in this and sadly had to choose the shepards pie. I will not count this place out because the decor and the I want to try an Eastern Feature.

So I was invited by a friend to eat here for lunch. Walking I realized it was a small, intimate and a bit rustic bar. The menu was a bit hard to work through, something about the layout made it hard to find anything. However, my friend told me that this place had a great fish and chips meal so I didn't even investigate the menu further. Here is where I was blown away, this was by far one of the best fish and chips baskets I've ever had! It was a simple slab of fish, moist but not too much. It had a thick battered crust that somehow seemed light and airy so much so that I could have eaten the batter by it self. The fries were hand sliced slabs of small whole potatoes that were to die for. Oh and the tarter sauce was a simple recipe but oh so "delish"! All in all, I almost gave this place a 5 star rating!

This is a hole-in-the wall sort of place that has a great beer selection and nice bar style atmosphere. One thing I do not care for is the food. I've now had several food items from here. The fish and chips being the best... however, if you want some good fish and chips go elsewhere like The Trappe Door (fish and chips are a whole lot better for about the same price). The one item that I was uterlly dissatisfied with was a buffalo burger that was meant to be a black and blue style burger. It was definitely black (charred and no spice)... in addition to being cooked very well done even though I requested medium, and was smaller than the bun all for around 10 bucks. At that price, I still had to buy a side. Much better burgers can be found around town for a bit less and they even will include some sort of side dish. My suggestion is to get food elsewhere. For drinks, this is a great place.

We ate there yesterday and had the fried green tomato app. And the fish and chips for our meal and it was great. The service was good and the place was clean. We will be going back again.

Beers on tap were all good craft beers. Bartender was nice with a well crafted hipster mustache. I had the Shepard's pie, and it was good, but not great. Based on other reviews, maybe I should've stuck with the fish n' chips. Atmosphere is cool, and pretty laid back. Music selection was great, and the volume was good for hanging out and having a chat.

  • Tara G.

Let me start by saying that every experience I've had with bartenders and servers here has been extremely pleasant. Additionally, I visited when they first opened and wasn't impressed with the food; several visits later, I can attest to the fact that they've got their menu down and every appetizer and sandwich I've had here has been delicious. They have a good beer selection as well; it's no Barley's, but it's certainly one of the better selections downtown. My issues with Velo Fellow rest with its seating and bathroom situations. While the tables in the middle of the restaurant are eclectic and comfortable, the church-pew style booths and the high top tables are a nightmare to sit in. I love the way the restaurant looks, yes, but I don't want to drink my beer feeling like I'm sitting in church, or, at 5'8", not be tall enough to get comfortable at the too-tall high tops. As for the bathroom, one restroom for the entire restaurant may be up to code, but it's not comfortable when you're three deep in line even on slow nights. To end on a positive note, their music selection is great, and they've got the volume just right as well. (I mean that honestly; it's loud enough to hear and enjoy while quiet enough to allow normal conversation with those around you.)

Great place to enjoy a conversation, a pint (or two) and some delicious food. Fantastic atmosphere and staff (Sarah is one of my favorites).

Interesting rustic decor, very pleasant wait staff, unique menu of high quality entrees and appetizers. As well, a small but very good selection of draft beers. We had French Onion soup, Portabello burger, Fish & Chips. All were well above average and the F&C is the best I have ever had. Unfortunately they are dropping the sausage dishes from their menu due to lack of demand. We plan to return soon and often.

Was really disappointed. There was so much potential there, that they just didn't reach. We started out with a bunch of appetizers and were so unimpressed, we decided not to bother with getting an entree. Our waitress seemed annoyed that we were there, and wasn't very helpful about anything. We started with the fried green tomatoes with garlic pimento cheese. The breading was a little heavy on the FGTs, and although I liked the way the pimento cheese tasted, it had a weird, almost gritty consistency... We also got the "Bowl O' Tots," which were good but nothing special. Literally they fried some tater tots and melted some shredded cheddar cheese on top. I was hoping for a housemade cheese sauce or something creative, but it was literally the same exact thing you could make at home or buy from Sonic. We also got the raw fries with bleu cheese crumbles. My mom really liked these. I'm not huge on potato chips, and I was hoping that these were going to be more on the "raw," potato-y side, but they were very much potato chips. I think they would've been better had they been a little more undercooked, but to each his own. We got the soup of the day, which was tomato basil served with a quarter of bread. Let me say this: The bread was delicious. The tomato soup, however, would have made more sense being served atop spaghetti noodles instead of in a bowl. It was much too thick to be a soup, and although it tasted good, I just couldn't get over the feeling like I was eating tomato sauce out of a jar with a spoon. When I had read the menu, I was so excited to try this place because the food sounded awesome, but alas, it was not. With so many good places to eat downtown, don't waste a meal here.

Hipster McHipster meetings here on Tuesday nights (bc Wednesday is just too middle of the road and complacent). All mismatched decor, almost-communal feel. Like a lot of the other users mentioned, it's not an English gastropub. Look at some photos in a Bon Apetit or Gourmet and you'll know that much. Velo reaches for "Greenwich Village x Dive Bar" is a fantastic assessment by Leslie S. And like her, the decor didn't offend me as much as the food. Fish and chips with for realsies CHIPS. Again, someone didn't read their foodie magazine because that just ain't right, man. The waitress really knew about her beer. It seem that she and my hipster friend had a great conversation about micro-brewing or something. She was condescending when explaining the lack of bourbon and scotch selections as not "their thing." Scotch probably reminds her of her tough childhood in Boca Raton with her neuro-surgeon dad and former Miss Alabama mom. Plus, scotch drinkers are usually the condescender (yep, condescender) so I found the change of place amusing. Most people probably wouldn't have. We placed our entire order at once. So 45 minutes after we finished our appetizers, we asked about our main dishes. Just a status; we weren't banging our knives and forks on the table or anything. She stomped off to check. Suddenly, a man(ager) or plain-clothes chef barges out with our plates. He puts them down and asks how everything is/was/will be/beverage refills before we can look down. It was like being in a cartoon. I will most likely be back for the sheer novelty of the place after I eat a real meal at a legitimate restaurant.

The food we ordered was great. The fish and chips (thumbs up on the raw fries) were amazing. The burgers had good flavor. The falafel appetizer wasn't my favorite it was just ok. Downside? A not so pleasant cockroach crawled on our table to wave us goodbye as we waited for our check. Needless to say it was a memorable experience but not a pleasant one.

Oh Velo Fellow, how I love thee! If I dined here any more often, I would be totally stuck in a Velo Fellow rut. Thing is, I just love the Fellow. The food, the beer, the atmosphere. It's all good. I've been eating my way through the menu and everything has been awesome. Outstanding fish and chips. Delicious chicken pot pie. Solid beer list, although I'd like to see some less hoppier beers on draft. Truly a European pub feel - I love the high, wooden, communal tables. The service, while a bit quirky, has always been good. I can't recommend the Velo Fellow enough. One note: if they are having live music, don't go if you want to have a conversation. It gets loud. Just go and enjoy the band.

Oh...yum... First of all, I love the decor. They've got that old brick/dark wood/leather cave-like bar thing down...and it doesn't hurt that they're in a basement. Shuffleboard, jukebox...excellent. The food, however, seals the deal. We stopped in for lunch, and everything we got was awesome. The french onion soup may be the best I've had in my memory. And...being from Portland, OR...it's great to see that Session beer is on their regular list of beers they stock. A great addition to the Greenville West End food scene. I just hope people find them in the basement!

We'll be back! My husband and I met after work on a Friday night for a belated birthday dinner. We shared the pimento cheese appetizer and couldn't finish it. It was divine - the best pimento cheese I've had at a restaurant! I'd like to try the raw chip or brie appetizer next time. I had the falafel po' boy and my husband ordered the prime rib sandwich (special?). After placing our order, the waitress informed him that they were out of the sandwich, but he could get the regularly featured prime rib. It was enormous and quite tender. I loved the tzatziki sauce that came with my sandwich. Beer selection is a definite thumb's up. I appreciate that they feature a good scattering of local brews. The only minus I see is that it's a small venue, so get there earlier. As another reviewer mentioned, it's a nice addition to Greenville's downtown. Can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu!

Although the atmosphere is awesome, the food was decent. I had the shepherds pie, and unfortunately, the meat and the sauce seemed to be off. The sauce particularly tasted like something I would get from a chunky can of Salisbury steak. Potted pie was enjoyable, however, I think the chicken was pre-processed. Overall, great beer selection and I will be back to try their lamb burger.

This is a nice cool little dark bar out of the way and close to the park. I had a lamb burger and melted brie, thats right a lamb burger and brie in a bar, and it as ah-maze-ing!

Hmm...where to start? I'm still at a loss for words. First warning should have been when we were given the menu. My wifes paper menu was deeply stained and filthy from having some type of dark beer or coffee spilled on it. We were seated and ordered drinks. The church pew seats make it hard to get in and out of the booth without contorting your body to get over the arm-rest and keep from knocking the table and spilling things. I had a Thomas Creek Doppelbock on tap and the wife ordered a double chocolate stout that came in a can. The waitress brought our drinks, and I really dont know what the heck she was thinking - but she started SHAKING THE CAN OF BEER! Before either of us could say NO!, she cracked the tab, and you know what happened next. The blackest beer on the planet SPEWS EVERYWHERE including all over my solid white dress shirt. Have you never served a beer before? I guess this could explain the stained menu from earlier. Her response was "Oh I'm sorry! I'm new!" I went to the restroom to try and clean up as best I could. After returning to my seat, about 10 minutes later she came over and offered a club soda and a towel to clean up with. Now to the food. We had the Slider Sampler which was actually very good. For the entree I ordered the Fish & Chips thinking how could I go wrong with something so simple. The fish was good, but the potatoes were soggy and bland. Chips are supposed to be crisp, not mushy. I'm not really sure what they were trying for with the single tablespoon of coleslaw, but it does not work. It was awful. The wife had The Hood & Boot Salad which she enjoyed, but the chicken was dry and overcooked. We were very disappointed because we had such high hopes for this place. The food may be OK at best, but it does not overcome having black beer sprayed on a $70 shirt ruining it within the first 10 minutes of arriving there, and the filthy menu presented to my wife on a clipboard.

This place is amazing! It's close proximity to my job makes it easy to grab food and drinks, along with playing some shuffleboard with friends. The atmosphere reminds me of a comfortable, most familiar grandparent's basement. I absolutely love going. The bartenders are always kind and gracious, along with being knowledgeable about their beer selections.

Great place to relax, eat good food, and drink. The food is mid price range, and generally very good - much better than Nose Dive or any other pub in Downtown Greenville. The atmosphere is very informal and relaxed. It's not uncommon to see groups playing a board game and on weekends they sometimes have local musicians who aren't half bad.

Good food, nice late-night atmosphere. Sometimes gets pretty crowded, but very convenient for an after-theatre drink or two. The $5 beer-and-shot special they often run is excellent!

Great selection of scotch and whiskey. The appetizers are massive, homemade, and delicious. They have a limited selection of tap beers but all of them are good. They have an extensive selection of bottled beers located in several coolers behind the bar. Waitstaff was attentive, friendly, and knew the menu. It can get crowded, has limited seating and can be quite loud so I would have to say it isn't kid friendly. Either way, good food, good drinks, good vibe.

Had the lamb burger and it actually wasn't that bad. The chips were soggy so that was disappointing. The ambiance is actually pretty interesting and it looked like a fun place to have a beer but for lunch it is too pricey for what you get.

The menu sounded delicious, but when the food came out, it was far from it. The sandwiches we ordered were very skimpy and not fresh. My Fried Green Tomato and Pimento Cheese BLT Sandwich (FGTP BLT) had the tiniest, single piece of lettuce I've ever seen, and perhaps a tablespoon of pimento cheese. When I asked for mayonnaise, I was brought a teaspoon of mayo in a small dish. The other sandwich we ordered, the "prime rib" was cheap roast beef that would be put to shame by a Boars Head Roast Beef sub from Publix any day of the week. The food was way over-priced and did not come with any sides--no pickle, chips, fries, NOTHING! I'm ok paying $10 for a sandwich, but it better be a delicious sandwich. These sandwiches were far from delicious The sides we did order (fresh potato chips) were completely ruined by the moldy ketchup I dipped them in. The health department should check this place out, as surely they are refilling over and over again their ketchup bottles, hence the moldy, rotten ketchup at the bottom of the bottle. If they're doing this with something as cheap as ketchup, I'd hate to see what else is going on in the kitchen. What a huge disappointment.

Yum, solid food. The atmosphere is pretty hip and the beet selection is nice. The employees were great, as well as the food. My wife and I shared the french onion soup and it was very tasty. She then had the pot pie and I had the fish and chips. I enjoyed tasting both. The soup flavors were great. The pot pie was also very good. The chicken was not processed and the fish was not a small portion. I enjoyed the chips which were cut like potato chips, some crispy and some soft. I liked them, especially as they deviated from the classic thick potato fries. The food was very good and we had a lot of fun. Recommended.

Cool vibe. Good beers. Really poor service. In fact, if the service had just been average, I would give it another star for sure. They had one bartender and one server for the entire restaurant on a Wednesday night. Unfortunately, for them, the place was full and they couldn't handle it. Took 10 minutes just to take a drink order. Later, we order another round and it never came. Finally, the bartender saw we were outo fdrinks and came over to the table to take a drink order. Food was not bad, but both my apetizer and entree were not hot. Had the Shepard's Pie. I've had better, but a solid effort nonetheless. Unless they improve their service, this place won't be around long.

Careful with their hours! Apparently I should have called ahead to double-check. Their website said the dinner menu was available until 9 pm on Sunday, but when I arrived at 8:45 I was told the kitchen closed 20 minutes ago. Still: I'm leaving 4 stars based on past visits. Their fish and chips and chicken pot pie were quite tasty. The portions are reasonably sized and the service is friendly and prompt (although of course their promptness varies with demand). I look forward to eating there again -- maybe in a few weeks when I can eat dinner earlier.

We were standing in the parking lot trying to decide where to go ... and I pulled out my trusty Yelp Monocle. The Velo Fellow popped up and ... oh my gosh ... what a lucky find. Dinner was delightful and our service person was extremely attentive and professional. We will be going back soon to try other items on the menu. By the way, my Shepherd's Pie was excellent, but I wish I had ordered the fish and chips like my wife did. I got to try a bite and it was awesome. That's what i will get next time. Our friend raved about the Chicken Pot Pie ... and she wouldn't even share!

One of my favorite places to eat in Greenville! Food and service is always top notch.
