I'm going to come right out and say it - I'm a Californian and I have no basis for comparison when it comes to "Southern" food. I can, however, say that I am a fair judge of quality, taste and hospitality and Southern Fried Green Tomatoes takes top honors in all three categories. I went with my coworker for lunch yesterday. I ordered the meat (chicken fried chicken) and two veggies (mashed potatoes & gravy and fried okra). The meal comes with biscuits and cornbread. The biscuit was delicious, light and warm. I didn't get to taste the cornbread because the waitress only brought one so I let my coworker have it. The mashed potatoes were creamy with just the right amount of gravy. Ah, who am I kidding? If I were at home, those potatoes would have been DROWNING in gravy but, you know, I'm mindful of a business's need to control serving sizes so for a *restaurant serving*, the amount of gravy was appropriate. The fried okra was yummy. Not overly breaded, not greasy and not slimy. The chicken fried chicken was flavorful and moist and again, the amount of breading was perfect. Service was prompt and our waitress was polite. I wish I were going to be in town longer so I could eat here again.

Overall not impressed. Typically these kinds of places serve a meat and 3 "veggies" while this place offers only 2. I got the hamburger steak with onions and brown gravy. The gravy was fairly tasteless, same for the meat and the okra/greens I got. The kicker was, the price of the meal for one person was over $11. Overpriced for any meat and 3 place. Much less one that's food is just "okay".

You have to try the fried green tomatoes :) after all its what they are named for, food was excellent. Awesome sweet tea, reasonable price. Need one of these closer to home

The food is very good, the place is clean, nice friendly "service", but charging an 18% gratuity for larger groups, 8 people, automatically is ridiculous. I had to get my own cup, ice, drinks, refill my own cup, ice and drinks. The servers brought my food, that's it. Friendly, yes. Prompt, yes but what is the tip for? When I pay for food I expect for it to be brought to my table. When I pay for food I expect to have utensils given to me. I'm not a cheap tipper either! I give exceptional tips for exceptional service. But what was I tipping 18% for????

This place is by far the best "Meat and Three" in the city that I have found... Very well done with generous portions, and quality ingredients in every dish. They have unbelievable homemade everything! If you are a southern food fanatic, and don't want the frills and whistles of fine dining, this place is your new mecca... All the typical dishes are served, including some rotating seasonal vegetables, which keeps it interesting. Enjoy!

My husband and I ate here a few days ago, and it was probably the worst restaurant meal we've had in years. There were a few good things---the waitress was very friendly, the wait time for the food to arrive was not too long, and the biscuits, corn muffins, and fried onion rings were good. I also like that you can help yourself to the drink refills and don't have to wait for your waiter/waitress to bring them. However, the meat in both my husband's and my dinner selection was VERY poor. I ordered fried chicken, and it was overcooked and dried out. It was barely edible and was certainly not enjoyable. My husband ordered a hamburger, and it was also way overcooked and not at all tasty. It came with bacon, which he gave to me, and even the bacon was almost tasteless! I love bacon, and can enjoy it when cooked different ways; I can't even figure out how it could have ended up being so tasteless.

Had a very nice experience, food and service was good. The restaurant had a very nice atmosphere. Excellent meat and three selection.

This is our third dinner at Southern Fried Green Tomatoes. The restaurant is always neat and super clean. The employees are friendly, helpful and polite. They are very customer service focused. The food is always excellent. All of their vegetables are fresh and are never frozen. Fried chicken is amazing! Green beans taste like they are fresh from the garden, macaroni and cheese is certainly homemade and is super!! I doubt you will find anything on the menu that doesn't taste good! Expect to pay around $9-$12/meal which includes drinks but it's well worth it!!

I'm afraid I could drink the apple cider vinaigrette dressing. Maybe a few gallons of it. Enjoyed a fresh salad with tender fantastically grilled chicken. Very fast and friendly service. Easy parking. I liked waking in to see a few couples and a few full tables of ladies dining. Combo diner and fast food restaurant but completely without the tasteless grease and sour attitudes!

  • Cheryl M.

The food was very bland. It appears that the fried food is warmed in the grease and they don't realize that it dries the food out. The fried okra and chicken were both dry. The chicken fried steak was so tough that you could not chew it. The place was empty but the waitress spent more time in the back talking than waiting on guest. I suppose if you can't cook southern food it's the best you can get. I won't be back.

Love, love, love, love this place! Great and friendly servers, great tasting and great quality food and even better prices! This is my go to when I am in Greenville. I recommend it to everyone and, yes, "they really do have fried green tomatoes!" They are completely child friendly and my daughter actually eats the food. That says enough in itself!

I had driven by several times and decided to give it a try. It was nothing extraordinary. I expected more of a diversified southern menu but almost everything was indeed fried (I guess that's why it has the name it does). It is an old-time meat and three place, which the old-time southerners should love. Since I am not wild about greasy fried food, it won't be a place I will return to.

  • Donna S.

Used to really like to come here but the cost for a meat & two is over $10 now. You get and refill your own drink but they do have someone take your order and bus your table.

First time in Greenville, SC my friend and I went on yelp and saw this restaurant. We were starving, after apartment hunting all day. We looked at the menu and the pictures and decided to go here. Within minutes of sitting down we were served. The food came out in about 10 minutes. We both ordered the chicken breast and rice with the mushroom gravy, I had collard greens and the cucumber and onion salad and she had collard greens and the sweet potato soufflé. It was amazinggggg. We will definitely be back here once she gets settled in. My phone screen is cracked, the waitress even gave me a business card to someone that can fix it. Great restaurant!

  • Mira M.

The servers were very friendly. But i rate low stars due to taste of foods. Fried livers were generous in quantity but too salty. The sweet potato was too sweet.

Love the food here, and the staff is very friendly. you will always have to wait on sunday to eat here but during the week isn't as bad. I had my rehersal dinner here and they were so nice with helping arrange and set it up. If you like southern fried food this is definetly worth a try.

I tried this for carry out. The restaurant was clean and bright. The employees were very friendly and helpful. The food came out very quickly, all wrapped up and ready for me. I ordered the jumbalaya with Mac N Cheese. It hit the spot. --I recommend :)

This place is great. Kids eat free three days a week. The good is wonderful and is the best home cooked southern food we have found to date here. Our waiter was extremely polite, professional and took our order perfectly. I am very picky and really try to find issues with any restaurant. This is a wonderful mom-pop restaurant in the Greenville area. However, as one earlier post stated they serve breakfast this is not true. They are only open for lunch and dinner.

  • Gehre M.

I am in total love with this place!! I would eat here daily, if I could - the fried chicken, the side dishes, the heavenly biscuits and of course, their fried green tomatoes. The portions are more than adequate, the prices are reasonable and of course - the wonderful Southern food. I highly recommend this outstanding restaurants.

  • Matthew R.

Not being from the south I didn't know what "meat n 3 " was, but Was pleasantly surprised, chose a meat and then pick your sides, all homemade and made fresh, lots of selections. Great place for large groups, and plenty of comfort foods, don't forget about the burgers, and now they are serving breakfast in the morning too. Kids eat free on wednesday and saturday!

A good meat and 3 is what they market themselves as and that is what they are. Good service, good food fast, and reasonable prices. I came away satisfied and felt good about my meal. Had the shrimp & grits with collards and of course fried green tomatoes. I'll be back to try the fried chicken - it looked really good.

I have been wanting to go here for quite a while and I must say I was very disappointed. The service was good and you get free cornbread and biscuits upon arrival, but all of the food seemed to be missing something. Everything was bland, the fried chicken, mac and cheese, and even the cole slaw. Not to mention my green beans were clearly from a can.

Best meat and three ever! So much food for the price. Two people could easily share a plate and my appetite is quite large.

Indisputably the absolute best meat and 3 in Greenville! The best comfort food out there!

High quality well prepared restaurant for meat and vegetables or "Meat and three." You get what you pay for and here you may pay more than $6 for a meal but the quality is outstanding. They serve all your southern favorites but in way that doesn't leave you feeling like you got hit by a truck after the meal. Fried food that's not greasy, using high quality oils with no trans fats, vegetables cooked without meat for vegetarians, and great service. Southern Fried Green Tomatoes shows that southern cuisine can taste great without being prepared in lard.

mmm...what a great way to end a week long business trip. I was debating on whether or not I was just going to grab fast food and be a lazy bum in the hotel room for the rest of the night or was I going to try my luck with some local cuisine. Somebody told me to go to Copper River but, after skimming their menu, I knew there was nothing there I really wanted. Considered Portofino's but, once again, not interested. I decided to just put in the address of my location in South Carolina and leave the Search for field blank and just see what came up. As I browsed through, I saw this place. I browsed the menu and thought it had some potential after I saw they offered key lime pie but started to talk myself out of it since sweets was the last thing I needed anyway. Then a thought began to form, "Hmm...I could be persuaded if they offer chicken fried chicken." Yay!!! There it was and there I went. The establishment has a feel similar to a neighborhood diner or cafe. You are seated by an employee and a server comes around to get your food order which can range from one meat and 2-4 veggies to burgers and salads. I opted for chicken fried chicken with gravy, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, collard greens, one cornbread muffin, and one biscuit. All of the food was good. I had to cut the chicken fried chicken with a knife in a couple of areas around the edges but, otherwise, I cut it with my fork. The green beans and collard greens where how I liked them-lightly seasoned (some would say bland but I believe in allowing people to season their own food to taste)- and the mashed potatoes were solid. The cornbread was only slightly sweetened which was good. The biscuit was rich and fluffy. The drinks are self serve. The wait staff was friendly and on top of everything. I believe I received my food less than five minutes after I ordered it. I ordered a slice of key lime pie to go and a taste turned into a devour once I got back to the hotel room. Subtly sweet with coconut flakes on top of the meringue top layer and a delicious graham cracker crust. Thanks SFGT for helping me end my trip in total satisfaction!

Food is ok, but does nothing to separate this place from any other meat and threes. I wish they did more to be creative and use more local foods. They could be on the cusp of something good, but choose to only attempt to compete for the S&K cafeteria crowd.

  • Kendra M.

I was hoping to enjoy a nice southern cooked meal, but I was really disappointed. The food was bland and tasteless. I had fried chicken, no flavor thank goodness there was hot sauce , collard greens were over cooked and had to add vinegar and the mac and cheese was also bland. I tried fried okra and sent it back because it was way too greasy. My friend sent her fried catfish back too.

For a restaurant named for fried green tomatoes... it doesn't live up to the name. Service was nice and everything was just okay. The fried green tomatoes were a bit too soft/ weren't fried long enough. I really enjoyed my mashed potatoes & biscuits and the macaroni and cheese was okay. This restaurant is okay, but they should really work on their freed green tomatoes.

  • William W.

This place is my favorite restaurant in Greenville by far. Better than Soby's, better than American Grocery, better than Saskatoon, etc. The food here is really fantastic. The pecan crusted chicken, whether it comes in the form of an entree, salad, or sandwich, is really tasty - great crunchy outside, moist inside, and not at all greasy. The creamed corn is dessert-like. The macaroni and cheese is really tasty too. The fried green tomatoes here are pretty awesome as well. The only thing I've had here that I wasn't just raving about was the sweet potato souffle. The desserts are also really tasty, but make sure you have someone that wants to share it with you, as they're pretty big. It's also kinda different that the drinks are self-serve. Can be irritating at the end of the meal when you're stuffed and don't want to move, yet still want some sweet tea. Overall, not a big deal. Wish they served Coke instead of Pepsi though (personal Atlanta-boy preference). The staff is super nice and attentive without hovering. The place is always clean and never too loud. It'll be interesting to see how the new expansion affects the business.
