Wonderful customer service - extremely friendly! Enjoyed the Chopped Chicken Sandwich with the Smoky Dreams white sauce. Mac-n-cheese and baked beans were also very good. The meal also came with a Sweet Tea. Great prices, great food, and great, friendly, service!

Since moving back to SC we have tried at least 4 BBQ places recommended by friends or from lists of "the best". We were never that impressed....until now! This is a family owned tiny place, looks like a red barn, the family were so nice gave samples of everything chatted up the kids, pies made in house from old family recipies. Mac and cheese was slap your mama good. Brisket was the bomb and the chicken wings were fantastic. Both had so much flavor they didn't need any sauce.

The only thing better than their absolutely awesome BBQ is their super kind and courteous service. I've been here twice this week trying both the chopped chicken sandwich and the brisket. Mwah, delicious on both counts. We recently moved to the area and this has been a gem of a find. I will definitely be a regular.

This is the smoked chopped chicken that I have been searching for! Moist, flavorful top quality meat. I had never had anything like the Smoky Dreams white sauce before. It was a nice addition to the chicken, but the chicken could stand alone just fine. My son had the pulled pork sandwich and really enjoyed it as well. Perfect sweet tea. Customer service was outstanding. Super nice people.

Best customer service I have seen in the area. BBQ is out of this world. Not a big Mac and cheese guy but theirs is really good. Really like the chopped chicken. Our go to BBQ place.

Iama Critic Rating - Big Al's Old Time Barbecue - 3 Stars 2131 Woodruff Road, Greenville, SC Overall: Chef Iama Critic and his guest critic crew love barbeque! We have cooked hundreds, if not thousands of pounds ourselves at charity events all over the Upstate. And we have eaten barbeque from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Great barbeque in the south east is pretty easy to find, but we are always on the lookout for the next great bbq dive that will upset our favorites and end up on our "Heaven on Earth" list. When we saw the ratings for Big Al's Old Time Barbecue we naturally planned a visit. When we arrived it was raining, hot and miserable. And while Big Al's has built a dining area right on the asphalt parking lot, don't expect any relief from the weather as there is no air condition and water flows right through the dining room. While ambiance does not typically factor into my ratings, unless it affects the food, I thought I ought to mention the conditions you will find at Big Al's. I have no doubt they will improve the conditions of their dining area as some people will find it lacking as it is right now. But I went to Big Al's for barbeque and I don't care if I eat under tarps if it means I get to sample incredible food. In fact I thought the water under my table added a little home picnic feel, but my guests were not at all amused or happy. And our order didn't help as the food we were served at Big Al's was a variety of items that varied from great to not so good. The Service - 0 Stars (0%) Big Al's Old Time Barbecue is a pay first, self-serve restaurant and does not provide wait service. As such I consider a tip as optional and chose not to leave one. We typically provide 20% or more for 5 star service on the pre-tax portion of the bill, 18% for 4, 15% for 3, 12% for 2 and 0% for 1 star service. The Food: Sauces - 4 Stars Like most of the best barbeque places Big Al's has an entire selection of sauces for your pleasure. Many are vinegar based, which I hate, but even the vinegar based sauces are some of the best I have had. I did not sample any that I thought I needed to take home with me, but they were all very good. $2.95 Peanut Butter Pie - 4 Stars This pie was a bit small, but then the price was also small. It was very rich and peanut buttery. The presentation isn't pretty to look at, but that would be expected from a place that packs everything "to go". $9.60 Dozen Chicken Wings - 2 Stars We have recently found quite a few places in the Upstate selling incredible wings and this has increased our expectations. The average wing from a year ago isn't average anymore. The average chicken wing now days is pretty good. Unfortunately we were not happy with Big Al's wings. They were soggy! The skin was not crispy at all. Maybe it was a bad day at Big Al's but no one in my group rated the wings we had above any other restaurant. Even the wings at Golden Corral are better. $10.95 Pound of Pulled Pork - 3 stars Not a bad price per pound. The pork had decent aroma and had some crispy bark. I thought this pork would have rated better with my group but they were simply not impressed. They preferred the pulled pork at Sonny's and several other barbeque restaurants and gave this pork an average rating. Their comments ranged from, "Not smoky enough" to "Too dry". $20.00 Full Rack of Ribs - 4 Stars Before the full rack of ribs was delivered to my group, things were looking pretty bleak for Big Al's. Nothing I ordered was pleasing my critic friends who have eaten with me at countless barbeque restaurants. But things looked up when the ribs made it to the table. Like chicken wings we have seen an overall improvement in local ribs in the last couple of years as more places are offering dry rub ribs and offering a variety of homemade sauces. We were very happy to see that Big Al's ribs were not served slathered in sauce but instead they were delightfully seasoned with dry rub, allowing us to each choose our favorite sauces. I frankly prefer ribs dry seasoned without bbq sauce at all. The price is about average but the flavor and quality of the ribs beats out many racks we have sampled recently. Total Bill: $41.80 for three people including tax and water. Final Thoughts: When I first found out about Big Al's and read other reviewer ratings I thought me and my critic crew were in for a real barbeque treat. Unfortunately we left Big Al's still wanting... wanting for that perfect Greenville barbeque dive. So it looks like the best barbeque in the Upstate is still in Anderson SC. We certainly hope that Big Al's can fix their wings and kick the flavor up in their pork to match the awesome flavor of their ribs, and when they do, we will be back.

At the recommendation of a friend I tried this place. He said they do brisket right and they do. The brisket was excellent. My son had the pulled pork sandwich and it was also excellent. At first I was worried that they provided me with a plastic fork but no knife. Then I realized the brisket was tender enough to cut with my plastic fork. Just fantastic. And maybe the best mac and cheese I have ever had. I will certainly be back. My new favorite BBQ place in Greenville.

I have been on a quest for some kick-ass barbecue in the Upstate. Big Al certainly puts out some delicious meat. I had driven by this place a dozen times and determined that I needed to try it. On the outside, it is a cute little barbecue shack at the edge of a shopping plaza. It is definitely a take-out place, with just a couple of tables to sit at. Their meat here is a perfect level of smokiness, tenderness, and some sort of spice rub or injected flavor. Their pulled pork (5 stars) is one of the best things on the menu. I will warn you, if you get the sandwich, it is small and may not fill you up. However, you can buy it by the half pound or larger, which is probably better because their buns are nothing special. Their ribs (4 stars) are plentiful and reasonably-priced, but I'm afraid the day we went there they were a little dry. They also have a grilled tenderloin sandwich (4 stars), which was fantastic, still moist, but a little on the small side. Another big star there is their smoked wings (5 stars). They are do tender and flavorful, they are definitely the best wings I have had here yet. What is a little disappointing, though, is the lack of side dish options. They offer coleslaw, baked beans, or potato chips. I don't really eat baked beans, so I have only had the coleslaw and the chips. The chips are from a bag, so they are not fresh or anything. Their coleslaw (4 stars) is one of the best vinegar-based I've eaten (which I am not normally a fan). It still had a decent crispness, not overly sweet or vinegary. They also offer up Ms. Pat's Famous Peanut Butter Pie (3 stars). I love a good peanut butter pie, and theirs is decent but far from the best. It was a little on the runny side, and the chocolate syrup drizzled on top did nothing for me. It wasn't overly sweet, which I appreciated. The reason to come here is definitely the meat. It is a SOLID spot for some delicious carry-out barbecue.

So this was my first time here. As other people have said it is under new ownership and they are in the process of rebranding as Smoky Dreams. I am a self admitted BBQ snob with a penchant for great 'Q. I have lived in the Mecca of BBQ, Kansas City, but am always looking for the next great shack. Smokey Dreams promises that. It is truly a BBQ SHACK. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner and his wife (who are both there all the time), they are BBQ people and love giving away samples. They are proud of their cooking and they should be. Great people running a great joint. My wife had a pulled pork sandwich. The pork was tender and juicy but still has just enough bark for flavor. I had the 2 meat plate with the brisket and ribs. Wow. The brisket had a great smoke ring with an amazing rub that provided a tasty bark. The meat had just the right tug when you bite in to it and it was from the right part of the brisket- the flat. As for the ribs, I'm afraid to tell you about them for selfish reasons. They were so good I'm going back for a slab for dinner. Along with some wings that I sampled. I'm for sure not telling you about them (get them, they are fabulous)! But the ribs.... Wow. If they weren't endangered, I'd swear it was unicorn meat. They are that good. A light rub and plenty of time cookin' slow and low. They are tender enough to make you wanna smack yo mamma. This place is worth the look. You will not be disappointed. Bring your appetite!

First, the bad news: It's outside seating. Next, the good news: it's outside seating - and whether the news is good or bad depends on the weather or if you're doing take out. After that, the news is almost all good. This is a shack on one of Greenville's main drags that does barbecue the right way: smoked long over a low heat hickory, prepared with a unique rub and finished with a unique touch. The prices are more than fair. For $4.35 we enjoyed a packed full pulled pork sandwich, some bark and some very flavorful, moist pulled pork. Add chips and slaw (more about that later) and the price is $6.75. Same price for "Al's Famous Ribs" and for their "hash" sandwich which sounded a lot like Brunswik Stew on a bun but went untried. The Brown Shoe Gourmet (read our other barbecue reviews) opted for their two meat combo ($8.50) savoring a couple meaty ribs and a stuffed to over flowing pulled pork sandwich. The ribs, if not now really famous, should be. Meaty, moist and full flavor without the bite that can come with too much hickory. They also offer wings and a tenderloin sandwich, but I'm not sure why. Their menu reads: "Big Al's Old Time B B Q featuring Miss Pat's Butt Rub." Don't know where Al was the day we stopped, but do know the three women getting into each others way in the too small kitchen were about as cheerful and accommodating as they could be. And the rub about their rub is there is no rub - whatever Miss Patty puts in the bowl, works and is finalized with a spray shot of apple juice. Insofar as the sides, the choices are limited: baked beans, vinegar, slaw and chips. The chips are by Lay's, the beans are on the fairly good side and the slaw is one of the best I've enjoyed. A creamy vinegar, not too tart, not sweet - just about perfect. They have three sauces which they provide in too small little cups: a standard not too thick tomato based that is very good, a mustard bvased sauce that tends to be a little spicy and a Carolina vinegar sauce that was just OK. Now for the topper: Miss Pat's Sinful Peanut Butter pie - which if not sinful, certainly should be so classified: a peanut butter like slice of cheese cake with chocolate in loops across the top that is well worth the calories. What would make my four star (we'd have given 4 1/2 if that were possible) rating five stars? Offering brisket on Friday as well as Saturday; putting squeeze bottle of sauce on the tables so customers don't have to go back to the window and ask for more; and screening in the picnic table area where you eat - and they say they're working on that. Big Al's Old time Barbecue is good... very good and while wee suspect a good slice of their business is catering, it will be even more customer friendly when they get some screens up. We'll be back.

The barbecue is good but the portions are small. I think most men I know would leave here still hungry.

Fantastic! Best smoked wings I have ever had. This place is tiny, but don't let that fool you! It packs a big lunch!

Absolutely best BBQ around. Lean and great flavor as well as great homemade sauces. Staff is extremely nice and friendly. They are adding different things to the menu and we have not had anything that wasn't good. Don't let the pork sandwich fool you. They stuff the BBQ IN.

Now called Smoky Dreams, I tried this place out today for the first time since they changed ownership. Hands down they have the best brisket I've ever tasted. I never order brisket around here because it is usually dry and under-seasoned. Not here! The pulled pork is amazing as well, but the brisket is where it's at!

Great bbq, wonderful owners. I can't believe it's taken me this long to try it but I guarantee I'll be back. We've already placed our order for their brisket next Saturday (it's pretty much a necessity since they sell out extremely early). I think we tried everything on the menu and it just made me want more. Try it, you'll be glad you did..

I had a chance to eat from Smoky Dreams Barbeque and Catering today and I found it absolutely delightful! I ordered the pull pork plate with mac and cheese and sweet potato crunch. The smoky flavor in the pulled pork was in every bite and I'm over the moon for the sweet potato crunch! I also had the opportunity to sample their brisket and pork ribs. They practically melted in my mouth. I will be going back for more and I recommend you give them a try!
